General Artist Statement:

The process of art creation has been an integral aspect of my existence, I create art from various materials, and I do it for a number of different reasons: To convey an emotion, as a response to the world around me, as a form of meditation, as a means of self expression or for the simple act of creating.

Artist Statement: When does art turn into money and money turn into art?

TITLE: 3 Dollars? (front) MEDIUM: Copper, Vitreous Enamel, Silver, Brass, Paper Money DIMENSIONS: 6”, 3”, ¼” DATE: 2009

I have always been fascinated with the intricate designs and symbols present on coins and paper money. What did they mean? Why were they important and why did people need money in general? I began to investigate this concept and realized that I did not agree with the principles in place within the modern fiat monetary system. In order to bring this concept into question and in homage to the work of Carl Faberge I began embellishing common objects such as chicken eggs with ornate components. In doing this, I came to realize that people are intriged with the amount and level of workmanship present on those objects and what they represent.

It was this process of taking an everyday object with a known “value” and transforming it into a piece of art with a subjective “value” that brought me to this body of work. Currently, I am working on embellishing “money” both paper and coin, to call into question what people value and why. It is through the creation and display of this body of work that I hope to create a greater awareness and dialogue about the significance of “money” within human social interactions; since it permeates all aspects of our society.

Artist Statement:

Circles have always been a source of inspiration for my art work. I love their simplicity and everything they represent especially in nature and science. This series of circular drawings serves as a metaphor for life, and as a means of personal reflection. As many cultures have observed in the past, and as science seems to be revealing today life appears to flow in repetitive circular cycles. Evidence of this is all around us. One needs only to stare out at the stars or down into a microscope to see how closely the macrocosm and microcosm mirror each other. This concept inspires me, and these drawings serve as a visual reminder of those life cycles.

Artist Statement: Imperfection is synonymous to being human. These geometric paintings are to serve as a reminder of our flawed beauty. From a distance we all try to project an image of “perfection”. However, just like these paintings, upon close inspection, all of our flaws become apparent. We realize the “perfection” we seek to portray is nothing more than an illusion.
