TIJUCA AWAKEN URBAN PROJECT IN THE NORTH ZONE OF RIO DE JANEIRO 2016
FAU - UFRJ
With our interpretation of the Tijuca neighbourhood as a space of diversity and centrality, the design guideline is based on a city view where no one stands out from the other and everyone has opportunities in the urban environment, allowing the pedestrian and cyclists an equal space within the city. Thus, thinking Tijuca as a unit, we worked with the concept of urban park as a transformer of this reality, where the environment provides spaces that brings people and the city closer. Creating a landscape diversiďŹ cation at various scales, rhythm and speed.
The choice of the old Carrefour supermarket as the focus of the project was based on these concepts and its proximity to the shantytowns (Indiana and Borel community). Today, Indiana is being relocated to the Triagem neighbourhood, away from the downtown area and from where these people have worked and created relations. From this, the idea of the project is to provide a space of mixed use, working with social housing to support these communities, as well as market housing, local commerce and cultural activities, generating movement and diversity of people across the community.

SERNAMBETIBA FLOODABLE PARK CRITICIZING THE ROUGH PROPERTY SPECULATION IN RIO DE JANEIRO WEST ZONE ENEPEA 2014 COMPETITION
CO-PRODUCTION: SEL-RJ 2014 GROUP TUTORING: VERA TÂNGARI
The district of Vargem Grande and its surrounding areas is an environmentally sensitive region located in the western Rio de Janeiro, it is a place of transition between land and ocean and has a fragile ecosystem with swamps and riparian forests. Until the end of the 1960s, the site was considered a rural area, with the definition of an urban perimeter and was maintained as an area destined for agricultural activities. Currently, the study area presents many difficulties for the population and urban problems: lack of urban roads and public transportation, the absence of public equipment and basic sanitation networks (more visible in areas of irregular occupation, where the most needy habitants live).
The creation of the Floodable Park (along with a general plan for its surroundings) in the Campo de Sernambetiba is a proposal to preserve a significant part of the biome of the region that is characterized by floodplain areas. It preserves floodwaters in its core and offers trails in wooden decks that allow the peripheral circulation of the park, with paths and lookouts. With this, two floor levels are proposed: the level of the ground that in part of the year will be flooded and the level of decks, walks and bicycle path that guarantee the access with comfort and safety to the visitors. In addition to these, a third level of displacement and observation is possible using the cable car.
28
1998
The Vargem Grande scenario is a rural area with density present only in the centralities of the district, since the large ooded area makes it diďŹƒcult to use.
2008
In 2009, with all the mega events context (Olympics and World Cup), were created new legislations that would drastically transform the region.
2018
Future scenario, if the current real estate speculation continues.
2018 - proposal
In contrast to the severe social and environmental consequences foreseen, the proposal is justiďŹ ed on three scales of analysis, which aims to oer an alternative to the occupation of the area: 1 - The General Plan, 25,600,000 m2 2 - The River Park, 826,500 m2 3 - The Contemplative Sector, 26,000 m2

the site map The plan proposes the definition of new densities as opposed to the premises established by the PEU, establishing: mixed uses and low densities (up to 30% occupancy) and with a high permeability rate (greater than 50%) in areas subject to flooding; medium densities (between 30 and 50% of occupancy) and with average permeability rate (between 30% and 50%); high densities (between 50 and 70% occupancy) and low permeability (between 20 and 30%). a. b. c. d.

It also contains the proposal of a system of parks considered as urban infrastructure 1. Restaurants, kiosks and picnic plates are planned to be installed along the peripheral path of the decks, bringing to the Park the gastronomic circuit that is characteristic of the neighborhood, invigorating the place day and night. 2. the park As a demonstration of the ecological infrastructure project, this ďŹ rst phase of the project was designed using all tactics to rebuild the ecological health that would lead to the recovery of biodiversity and native habitat, retention and improvement of rainwater quality, and public access to quality open space and, ďŹ nally, a catalyst for urban development. The main plateau is located in the central part of the park, in one of the most sensitive parts of the land and is equipped with four buildings:
1. Pontal Museum 2. Restaurant 3. Multipurpose building (with library, auditorium and a SEBRAE) 4. Cable Car Station 5. Bicycle path Through these landscaping techniques, the deteriorated water system and the peri urban wasteland were transformed into a large public park of high performance and low maintenance. Harmonically, it regulates rainwater, restores native habitats to biodiversity, and attracts residents and tourists.

TEMPLE STUDYING THE TRADITIONAL JAPANESE POST AND BEAM CONSTRUCTION LONDON, 2015
CO-PRODUCTION: STUDIO 3.2
The third-year architecture students from Studio 3.2 (composed of 22 students) at Kingston University led by tutors Takeshi Hayatsu and Simon Jones experienced the notion of learning through rebuilding, by prefabricating and erecting wooden temple structure in the garden of Dorich House Museum. As a collaborative project with Stanley Picker Gallery, the Studio has built an interpretation of the Temple Gate from Todaiji Nandaimon, Nara - Japan, built-in 1199, and listed by UNESCO World Heritage Site as a ‘Historic Monument of Ancient Nara’.

Half of Nandaimon at 1:5 scale was made using standard treated timber sections. The traditional Japanese post and beam construction principle was adapted to suit standard modern-day 2x2” and 2x3” softwood. Over 3,000 components were prefabricated in the Kingston University workshop, using jigs and templates made by the students to create an over 5m tall structure, with a footprint of 3m². The installation took two weeks of prefabrication and one week of assembly and was a part of the London Festival of Architecture 2015.

The Plan View To simplify the entire construction process, we chose to work with axes that cut the columns, so we could deďŹ ne the drawings to guide the group. Many of these columns have the same detail, as the design is mirrored in quarters, so using this process simpliďŹ ed a lot of the work. 54
Wooden joints The original 2x2” and 2x3” softwood was first shaped in triangles and squares to form the columns. Then, a small blade is used to cut a hole (called the mouth) in the opposite edges of two pieces of wood. To assembly the columns together a highly dried and compressed wooden biscuit (particle wood) is covered with glue. The biscuit is immediately placed in the slot, and the two boards are clamped together. The wet glue expands the biscuit, further improving the bond.

The System There is a bracketing system to support the rafters on the deep eaves, which calls for layers of bracket arms under each projecting eave. Between the tiers of bracket arms are lined bearing blocks, which serve as connectors and support the beams, which project further out as they go upwards. The brackets are set into holes cut into the column and the tie beams are thread all the way through the columns.
