skills

I have comprehensive hands-on experience and knowledge in planning and development process. I specialize in the fields of regional analysis of economic, land use and transportation using GIS, statistical tools and social study methods.

General

Urban design is another strong suite of mine. I am proficient at urban design software such as AutoCAD, Sketchup and Photoshop. I am full of creativity and have strong execution and communication skills that enable me to conceive, execute, and deliver projects from draft to completion. Having traveled to nearly 30 countries, I have always been inspired by how people’s ways of living and urban forms interplays and create its distinctive natural and cultural environment. This is what gave motivations for me to be an urban planner and designer, who is dedicated to observing and creating diverse, creative and healthy living environment for people.

Urban Design

Site Plan Design Marina Del Rey, CA • Fall 2013 This project is a continuation of an assignment from urban design class. This site plan is designed to have mixeduse and mixed-density residential units. The green space, street layout, and public facilities are allocated propotionally to the housing densities and locations. • Software used: AutoCAD, PhotoShop, Google SketchUp and Earth

PLANNING POLICY ANALYSIS & TECHNICAL WRITING

Policy Analysis, Memos and Grant Writing Irvine, CA • 2009-2012 Technical Writing was an important part of the education in my master’s study. I was trained to analyze land use policies and write them in succinct memo styles. I am capable of writing analysis and reports in a structured and elaborated manner. I have been using Excel for over ten years to organize, calculate and present my data. I am great at using flowcharts maps and other graphics to summarize, express and emphasize project results. More examples will follow in this portfolio. • Software used: MS Word, and InDesign

Transportation Analysis

Santa Ana Transit Zone GIS Land Use Analysis Santa Ana, CA • Spring 2011 The City of Santa Ana proposed five light rail transit routes for public review. To compare the five routes, I established a zoning map for 268 lots using GIS and analyzed the neighboring land use land types, residential density and locations of public facilities within five and ten minute walking distance (1,000 and 2,500 feet). This research showed that Route 3 is supported by the higest residential density (5022 dus/acre) and Route 4 is supported by the largest commercial lands (560 acres.) These maps present the scope of influence of each route and assist public in their decision making process. • Software used: GIS, and PhotoShop

Transportation Analysis

Measuring Smart Mobility in Orange County and Inland Empire Orange County and Inland Empire, CA • Fall 2010 In this project, three methodologies were used to measure the degrees of mobility in Orange County and Inland Empire. Meaning, how well are these regions connected in terms of the physical and virtual infrastructures. The methodologies are network analysis, location quotient and location analysis. The main parameters applied for the measurement are highway network completeness, public transit linkage, and telecommunication development. The research shows that both regions have strong highway network and telecommunication development. However, their public transit connectivity falls largely behind the national standard. • Software used: GIS, PhotoShop, and Excel

High Speed Rail China and Taiwan Experience

Chosen project in 2010 RailLA call for papers

China and Taiwan • June- September 2010 This report includes 7 case studies in the high speed rail (HSR) developments in China and Taiwan in order to provide references for the coming HSR development in Los Angeles, CA. The report includes detailed accounts on the design, planning process, outcomes and financial position of the cases . This is a group work of 8. Role: The Taiwanese case study. Literature review. Field study. Planning process and design analysis. • Software used: PhotoShop, Google Earth, and MS Word

Santa Ana Eastside Neighborhood Improvement Plan Santa Ana, CA • Fall 2010 The task of this project is to build a healthy community in Eastside Santa Ana through physical design. Our team of 5, conducted field search, gathered social and economic statistic figures and derived the following goals as recommendations for neighborhood improvement. Goals: • Enhance Neighborhood Identity • Increase Recreational Opportunities • Create Linkages • Promote Overall Safety Our team designed a neighborhood park in the vacant lot that incorporates the important elements to achieve the four goals. • Role: Design the function of the park. Sketches and 3D model of the park design. • Software used: PhotoShop, SketchUp and MS Office 1

GIS Correlation Study Pittsburgh, PA • Spring 2011 In this GIS project, I compared the locations of pedestrian injury with the neighborhoods’ poverty levels and their proximity to parks. The first map shows a higher concentration of injuries in high poverty areas: 66% of the injuries fall into 40% of the poorest neighborhoods. The second map identifies the park sites and their 1/2-mile vincinities. It shows that the injuries occur more often in areas further away from parks: the injuray rate for 600 radius and 600-1200 foot radius from parkland is 1 to 1.37. • Software used: GIS, Excel

Regional Economic and Development Analysis for Pudong Shanghai Shanghai, China • Fall 2010 - 2011 This report provides quantitative data and narrative description on the development of Pudong New Area (PNA) during the 1990-2010, a crucial development phase to the city. The purpose is to understand the role of this special economic area in the process of shaping Shanghai as China’s biggest global city. The research result provides comprehensive information for my client, Professor David Smith’s research on the formation of Chinese global cities. It also provides comprehensive information and in-depth reviews for planners and developers are interested in the vibrant Chinese market.

Land Area • Shanghai: 2,448.1 sq. mi • Pudong: 467.3 sq. mi • New York City: 302.6 sq. mi

Facts about PNA

The report is divided into two parts: The first part provides an overview of the planning practice in PNA. It includes literature reviews, development timelines, maps, and descriptions of special development zones. The second part delineates the trend
