SYNOPSIS My graduation project involves the revamping of Hyderabad Runners’ visual identity . Being a ten year old organisation, Hyderabad Runners wanted to address their members with a all new professional look and feel. This project is divided into four sections- Introduction, Research, Creating and Applications. Intense visual exploration, skill building, questioning the role of design and getting first hand experience of professional design practices shaped my graduation project. The Diploma project journey made it clear to me that " THE BEAUTY IS IN THE PROCESS ". I realised the importance of understanding a client and learnt how to back my presentations. The skill and understanding I have gained during the project has given me the confidence to take up any kind of challenge in the future.

This document is a detailed report of my diploma project as a student at the DJ Academy of Design. It was a 4-month Project at Hyderabad Runners,Hyderabad. In brief, my project was the crafting of a brand experience. It involved the conceptualizing and creation of a whole new brand language and consequently a whole new brand experience for Hyderabad Runners. I researched on brand design processes to understand the parameters and the terminology. Throughout my project, I identified, understood and gave form to Hyderabad Runners character, its ideals and goals. What resulted is an identity system that manifests throughout Hyderabad Runners communications – its print material; online presence(Website), office collateral’s ,etc.

DJ ACADEMY OF DESIGN The D J Academy of Design belongs to the illustrious GKD Charity Trust, set up in 1983 by the industrialist par excellence, (Late) Cavalier Dr. G.K.Devarajulu. His pioneering efforts saw the emergence of Coimbatore on the global industrial map and the LMW Group as a major force to reckon with. The Group now comprises a staggering 20 companies with LMW being the flagship brand. The D J Academy is carrying forward the legacy of Dr. G.K. Devarajulu in the noble sphere of education. The Academy has two wings. The D J Academy for Managerial Excellence (DJAME) and D J Academy of Design (DJAD). It is a remarkable initiative towards harnessing the potential of future Managers and Designers. Set in a small village, Othakalmandapam, about 20kms from the city of Coimbatore, DJAD is an ideal environment to nurture young designers, giving them the space and freedom to explore, experiment and learn under the able guidance of the finest in their respective fields.

INTRODUCTION
LIFE AT DJAD “Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.” - Kevin Arnold It was in May, 2011 that I saw DJAD for the first time and fell in love with the it. Probably, that’s why they say “ Love at first sight “. Though I was a little sceptical if I wanted to study design, I believed in what I saw. I came in with a few vague ideas and I was only certain of one thing that I wanted to make the best of the next few years. It did take some time for me to get comfortable with the new change, opening up for new courses, to interactions , new friends etc, The first year had a lot of ups and downs , but when I was asked to repeat my foundation year , I questioned myself again if Design is what I wanted to do ? But my dad believed in me and encouraged me to take this fall as a stepping stone and that is when I decided to continue and make him proud one day. For me DJAD is a little haven of free thought, acceptance, creation and endless pursuit of knowledge. I feel extremely lucky to have had a chance to study and learn from the DJAD Community. Looking back to the past few years here, I dont remember the days but I remember the moments which have become memories which I can cherish for a lifetime.

BRIEF Redesign the Visual Identity for Hyderabad Runners, a non-profit organisation along with brand guidelines and the respective collaterals.
why this project The reason I chose this project was a way to give back Hyderabad for what it had given me for all those years that I have lived here. And this particular project would help me understand and grow better as a designer in the outside world. This was a great oppurtunity to see how a company works whether it is for commericial purpose or for the non-profit purpose. To analyse the role of design in the outside world was the most needed during this course of time. It would give me an oppurtunity to interact and work with the real clients and not the hypothetical ones like in the classroom projects.

Research is the first step towards any design. Researching into the details of every topic helps one in enriching his knowledge of every aspect of the project. In order to support the brief and to increase the understanding of the project, I started with research. It was necessary for me to understand the existing personality of the brand, the market, the target audience and their perception of the brand. So I divided the research into four section- Understanding Hyderabad Runners, Understanding Branding , Understanding the user and the Existing running clubs.

Brands tell Stories Great story tellers dont just read out loud. They evoke. When a brand tells a story, it too employs tools to gain the ear of its audience. LOGOS are more important than ever, because they make sure the brand is still connected to the story. Because a logo appears so often and in so many places, its message must be clear, refined and protected.
Brand Experience Brand Experience is not just the logo. It is continuous presence, and continuous delivery of the product in the brand’s unique way. Good brand experience directly translates to loyal customers. 89% of consumers will jump straight into the arms of a competitor when they have a negative experience. Brand Experience is not about making a sale, but to forge long-term relationships. It’s easy for a brand to “look good.” But how they do it in their own way is what makes or breaks the brand experience. For example, the Imagine Store for Apple can be made to look beautiful and sophisticated with the use of colours. Brilliant visual design can make customers go “WOW!” But the face of Apple is a minimalistic one, and they stick to that. In EVERYTHING.
The three principles of brand experience to remember are ENTICE , ENGAGE and EXTEND. Draw people in Broaden the conversation Make them believe Brand Experience is enhanced by constantly reminding the customer of the brand’s core values through continuous presence

EXISTING LOGO Identifying Problem Areas : The existing logo is a simple wordmark with the letters h and r in the icon. Trying to give a feel of a person getting up from the chair is what they tried to show. The problem areas of this logo are: 1. Although the colours are harmonius, they do not convey the attributes carried by Hyderabad Runners. Due to the contrast, it gets hard to place them on different backgrounds as they cause visibility issues. 2. The logo doesnt feel professional and does not convey the spirit of hyderabad runners at a go. 3. The tagline is not very appropriate and is not visible for the user to read. 4. The current logo doesn’t represent the current activity.
WHY RE-BRAND There are as many reasons for designing a new logo, or updating an old one. The belief that a new design will transform any business, is a general misconception. A redesigned logo may have the advantage of implying something new, something improved—but this is short-lived if a company doesn't live up to its claim. For Hyderabad Runners: Need to create a new look such that the brand reflects as a sophisticated and a mature group that it has become over the years.
A logo should be aspirational and capturing the essence of the activity To satisify these three attributes : Identify Recognise Rememeber If the logo is speaking ? What is it going to convey to the audience ? What is the shape going to say ? How will the colour define the brand ? What does the type say? What type of logo should it be ?

Any particular incident you were proud of being a member of Hyderabad Runners ?
I was once running in New York in my HR tee and a person came up and said, “Hey nice to meet a runner from Hyderabad”. He subsequently came to India and ran the AHM
Every time I wear there T-shirt and run or go out, the glances of people just make me feel happy.
running in chennai, pondicherry and mumbai with HR shirt and hearing cheers of “go hyderabad” (and similar slogans) from the spectators
Proud of being part of group where people devote quite a bit of their personal time with nothing expected in response, with sole goal of bringing in more people to injury free running, without charging anything, SAG is a big luxury Hyd runners provides free of cost, we are gifted
Actually was targeting to reach a capacity of 10 K run & therefor got in touch with group. Finally trained with the group & landed up doing my first HM at AHM 2012 at age of 50 +. Lots of encouragement from the group for this.
I’m very proud AHM, as I think it is one of the best organized city marathons in the country, and I’m proud of being associated with it.

How has Hyderabad Runners changed your life ?
From childhood people used to say involve in the groups, mingle with the people around. But it has been pretty hard for me as I am not a person who can gel pretty easily. Also somehow I have never found a group with a common concrete interest as this. Well I have never been a runner. I started running because I was fat. The biggest thing I can say about how Hyderabad Runners has changed my life is “It made me quit smoking. It is not something incredibly poetic but it means a lot to me. We all know the downsides but quitting smoking I would say is the hardest thing on earth. I have done it because of this group. Yes, it is substituted with another addiction, running. Also HR enables me to challenge my limits everyday. I never imagined I would run 10K, I did. Then half marathon, I did. And finally full marathon, oh boy, I have done it. And needless to say, this has improved myself as an individual. My concentration power, patience have increased by leaps and bounds. I will summarise by saying that HR has changed my life.
1. After associating with the group, first biggest change has been the ability to accomplish something that I never dreamt of. What started as a weekend recreation running as a part of my fitness regimen became a habit. Running is now tuned into the system. 2. Training with a group led to meeting more and more people and in the process expanded the social circle. Knowing people from various backgrounds, professions, gender and age has led to sharpening of my social skills, respecting others and humility. 3. Touched by the power of running, I have helped other to take up this sport. Further, unknowingly I have inspired several of my friend, colleagues to lean towards leading a fit and active lifestyle.
Folks from HR provide the guidance and encouragement for me to continue running. Just interacting with other runners during the long run is a huge morale booster and now I’m doing this more for the social interaction and runners high rather than just for fitness
Association with cycling or running, that too from a growing city like Hyderabad reveals that we are far better than most of cities in India. I am from Delhi and love Hyderabad City. Hyderabad Runners means a lot for me. It has a network of world class accomplished runners who can replicate thousands of runners in future. Hyderabad Runners is a brand which will be cherished in future also.

After taking a survery of around 35 runners, I got a better and clear picture in my head about Hyderabad runners. With all the experiences and what I hyderabad Runners means to the runners, I had few repetitive words in my head which could be helpful in deriving a new brief and making a moodboard and redesigning the identity.

The new tagline Taglines actually fulfill a very important purpose: they let you quickly and efficiently sum up what your company is all about. The survey gave me an idea about how people were attached to Hyderabad Runners , their experiences and what they think about the group. This is when I realized that the brand needed a new tagline and hence from the words that people suggested during the survey, I brainstormed on few taglines:
Run Like never before. Do a small Run Run like your walking Joyfull runners by the runners , for the runners Refresh your run Refresh,Rejoice and Restart Run like you stole something When the runs are on
Refresh, Rejoice and Restart were the best connected to the group Hyderabad Runners for always coming up with new runs which have always been enjoyed by the runners.

THE APPROACH After the initial research and survey, I did a random checklisting which helped in understanding the whole idea of Running better . This helped me fix on a few attributes that would be the starting points of the branding process : PASSION ENERGY MOTIVATION CAMARADERIE These terms best descirbe the spirit of Running. Keeping this in mind, I set out to create a moodboard which would help in creating different forms

BEING ABSTRACT When I began sketching out idea, I had a huge creative block as I couldn’t think beyond a running man or Charminar. Hence, I revisited my attributes and came up with abstract items to connect with it like wind, force, horse, electricity etc. These words helped me break from the running man and come up with abstract forms.

The reason why I tried out abstract forms was because they connect to the user on an emotional level and can trigger experieneces which may not necessarily happen with a direct form. Also, an abstract can communicate attributes better by giving the feel of it to the user.

CHOOSING THE FONT Typography is as important an aspect of a brand’s personality as the logo itself. It is the voice of the brand in all its communications, and must have a strong connection with all the visual aspects of the identity. Some of the chosen fonts, though apt-looking for the brand, are part of the standard set of fonts that come with any word processor, and might hence, be widely used in logos. These are: • Lucida Fax • Lucida Bright • Constantia • Minion Pro • Palatino Linotype

Logotype The logotype compliments the logo, creating a visual balance between the softer angles and shapes of the symbol. The logotype is contemporary, leaning forward to create a sense of forward movement and

Glimpses of last quarter
Dear Hyderabad Runners, It is yet another wonderful moment for us as we launch the inaugural edition of the quarterly newsletter RUNdevouz. It can be considered to be a milestone moment wherein beginning from now, we have a platform to discuss, deliberate, exchange and educate, tease and tickle. I personally reckon that RUNdevouz would allure all of us alike, pepping up our spirits consistently and strengthening the bond. I always felt that the unmatchable newsletter overwhelms the trendy social media and chat groups with a sheer sense of belonging. Going beyond the exuberance out of RUNdevouz, I shift your attention to the grand season in store. The summer may be blazing but our commitment has been overpowering the heat wave in terms of energy and brightness. The scintillating saga of Couchto-5K and the electrifying Awards Nite besides Holi run have kept the calendars busy making Hyderabad Runners an enigmatic presence across Hyderabad. Now I am excited to announce that we are about to step into the tenth year of our glory A momentous occasion to celebrate our success, reminisce our journey and renew our pledge, all with a 10K run across the world anywhere by Hyderabad Runners. I should congratulate one and all to have been by HR side to make a marathon out of simple steps. The registrations for Annual Marathon are also on and probably the tenth year of Hyderabad Runners will render altogether a vivid spectrum.

Till then, I wish you all the best and happy running !

LEARNING The graduation project was certainly not a smooth journey as they were a lot of ups and downs. It made it clear to me that DESIGN is not a linear process. Working in the industry, especially in a sceanrio where deisgn was not the core, was really challenging. Unlike college where design was the central to activites, I found that in the industry, Design only formed a really smart part of a bigger circuit. The challenge was to make design felt as important as the product or service. This experince really helped me reflect about my own understanding of design and how I see it placed in this society, Perhaps, the freedom to experiemnt in college still strongly resonates in the industry which runs on deadlines, financial cuts and hierrachy. I realised the importance of believing in my design in any project that I take up, I believe Design can play a lot of role and can be emphasised at every available oppurtunity. It can and should add value and EMOTION to people’s lives. But this was just a start, with new learnings and new insights, new ways of working, new questions, I got a better idea of what kind of projects to work in the future. Even thought circumstances were not very favourable as a designer, I did enjoy working on this project out of the organisation scenario I am excited about what lies ahead and not regret for what happened.
