ambitions

the scale of architecture // this work is meant to be not only a summary of my journey through architecture so far, but also an insight of my point of view on things going on in this field. The works are not organized chronologically, but my presentation starts with my graduation work, which collects all my ideas and experience. At the end of my academic journey, I developed a sensibility for spaces that have a human scale, and provide intimacy for their users. If on one hand I am firmly convinced that experimentation in architecture is not only important, but fundamental in order to respond to the constant changes in people’s lifestyles, on the other hand I believe that it is important to keep an eye on the past and understand the charm of the vernacular. Architecture is for men, then it has to be not only functional for its use, but pleasant for its users.

research phase // quest and analysis of those places of the city (Berlin) that are remarkable for the observer and search for the features that make these places remarkable.

the city and the phenomenology of architecture // the given assignment was to design a housing block in Berlin, and the process started with a research on how can dwelling convey a feeling of urbanity to the street, in relation to its role in the city. Urbanity means to feel a sense of belonging to a city, which I attribute to the capability of people to recognize the environment and therefore to act on it. In this research I focused the attention on the street, seen as the place where house and city connect, the main public stage. Urbanity is the sense of feeling at home in the city, thus, being a feeling, it cannot be studied with practical and totally rational methodologies, such as a morphological analysis, but phenomenology has been chosen as the tool to investigate this field. The key point is to take into account the perspective of the observer, in a way that it is possible for him to refine and improve his perceptions living in the city. This should be, in the end, the condition that the architect wants to provide when designing in the city.

This is the reason why one building is crossed by an inner alley -the canyon- that brings light in the core of the house, which is supposed to be the darkest area in the unit. In addition, the living units are divided into two areas with different lighting conditions, those providing spaces that do not impose a use, but already provoke different feelings according to the personality of the user. the assignment // the aim of this project is to add a value to the residential function: LIVING +. The “plus is the working program we combined with the living units. Since nowadays people are getting more and more busy, the concept of this project is to turn the commuting time into a useful moment. When the working places are close to home, the commuting time can be use for grocery, shopping and relaxing. The ROUTING from home to work becomes part of the daily ROUTINE. The challenge is to fit everything into a 40x40x40 m cube.

DESIGN OF THE WHOLE LIFE CYCLE // The two materials of the structure, bamboo and bricks, can be totally separated and easily replaced, as well as the demountable roof. Bricks can be easily produced by the inhabitants of the house since they are only dried in the sun, and bamboo can also be cultivated in the garden and the broken pieces, that need to be replaced, can eventually be used as fuel.
