Marco entra in una città; vede qualcuno in una piazza vivere una vita o un istante che potevano essere suoi; al posto di quell’uomo ora avrebbe potuto esserci lui se si fosse fermato nel tempo tanto tempo prima, oppure se tanto tempo prima a un crocevia invece di prendere una strada avesse preso quella opposta e dopo un lungo giro fosse venuto a trovarsi al posto di quell’uomo in quella piazza. Public spaces are often community life mirror. Analysing experiences in Italy, China and France allows me to think about different points of view of the same subject.

Cao Yang New Village | Public Realm as City Welfare and Citizen Wellbeing Shanghai (CN) | Internation workshop 2014 In Shanghai and Venice we (Italian and Chinese students) worked on the requalification of a worker neighbourhood, Cao Yang. Located in Northwest suburban Shanghai, the site is 8.4 kilometres from the city centre’s People’s Square. Except for a few scattered village farmhouses, the site was a wide-open space with a potential total area of 200 hectares, big enough for long-term development. Although there was an increase of population and activities along two roads since they were built in 1930s, the area remained an agricultural field yielding vegetables and was densely covered with small creeks. In short, in both social and spatial terms, it differed a lot from the densely built-up city proper south of the Suzhou River, and from the small town Zhenru further north. But what made it the most desirable site for the housing project probably had to do with the fact that it was a reasonable distance from the two concentrated industrial areas along the Suzhou River (twenty minutes or less by bus, and less than an hour on foot). The four kilometre distance was considered a reasonable distance that would provide the residential area with fresh air of the countryside, away from the pollution of the industrial site.

We made an analysis of the site and the population contest, considering social issues, landscape and urban elements. In Shanghai we had the chance to visit few times the site and speak with habitants that show us the interior of the villages and the big buildings. We worked for two moths in Venice, making a final presentation with our Chinese colleagues.

Layer 1 // Creating continuity and connexion between different green spaces that now are divided. This action needs the help of the habitants, that could manage them.
Layer 2 // The second layer is made for the public spaces and public facilities system. For the public space, the project is aimed to improve the quality and the connection of the existing facilities, but also to propose a new way to live the public areas, opening the semi public spaces and micro-scale facilities inside the communities to all the inhabitants. Layer 3 // The third layer is basically the result of the previous ones.

Isola shared spaces: between public spaces and urban commons Milan (IT) | Syntesis Lab | Giulio Ernesti | Ruben Baiocco 2015 In Isola neighborhood the spire of the Unicredit Tower scans our path, guiding us from Viale Zara, north of the district, up to its borders, headquarters of the changes passed through in recent years. The skyscaper Bosco Verticale and the Google glass ziggurat, between Via de Castillia and Via Confalonieri, chase our steps. They surmonted the surrounding spaces, a metaphor of this “island”, where the life and vitality of citizens was confronted with the metamorphosis of its spaces. Since the 80s the district has started its transformation from an economic, social and demographic point of view. The skyline of the neighborhood tells this story. Some important places for the district have been canceled: the gardens of via Confalonieri, Bosco di Gioia and the Stecca degli Artigiani left space for new and elegant buildings. New public spaces have been created from the district in the form of compensation for the undergone transformations, but the negative symbolic meaning of the processes that generated them has prevented the population from recognizing and accepting these places with their potential. Our goal is to study these spaces, both investigating the forms and functions (groundfloor), and reconstructing the perceptions, through the reading of the uses and comments released by the people we met in Isola. We explored Isola, we saw his big, new spaces running through the neighbourhood, finding it, then, within the walls of Isola Libri, where Laura and Elena tell us about their history, including the activities of Comitato

dei Mille and recent workshops in the library with which they hold together the community; in Les Mots library we discover neighbourhood past, including old maps and the Robin Hood of Milan; we are greeted by Abo in the small fort of Offtopic, reaction resistant to taxation policies come from the top; the owner of Vinario 11 shows us an old green and lively image taken in the past in front of his activities; the kindergarten SopraSotto, on the premises of Medionauta, make us learn a new kind of education. Neighborhood identity has been excluded from the spaces in which manifested itself, taking refuge within the walls that have enchanted us, filling us with their vitality and sharing. As we speak with Laura, Abo, Emanuela, we realize that the idea of the city where memory sharing are considered fundamental values is still alive, still present, it is only enclosed in different spaces, where we discover the new sociability, ties that are woven, not outdoors, but inside the walls, around a book or a glass of wine.

Our work aimed to find out the new forms of sharing in Isola area of Milan. We started from the chronological reconstruction of the events that have accompanied the emergence of a strong active citizenship and its expression in the new urban geography of aggregation places. The history of the neighborhood is marked by the faces and the words of the hundreds of people that followed and slowly joined the nneighborhood defense movements. With the flow of events and the emergence of new conflicts, we see the emergence of new associations and new groups of citizens, lined up against a common cause, always different.

Parallel to this history, there is a progressive institutionalization of citizens’ participation, firstly as their tendency to associate and establish themselves as recognized groups, then as an attitude of the new administration to recognize and facilitate these dynamics and channel them along the path of dialogue. They seem to be only the first steps of a necessary process of re-enactment the relationship between the Public and the historical residents of the Isola neighborhood, for which the wounds caused by projects and decisions dropped from above and indifferent to the manifest local sensibilities are still open.

We explored new social spaces, analysing them and their activities. We investigated the relation between them. In order to “bring out” from these closed places, we imagined a process able to involve those associations and informal groups and neighborhood citiziens.

Parc de la Bergère: garden management with citizens and associations Bobigny (FR) | with Bellastock & Scuola dell’Indecisione 2016 I participated as volunteer, with Coloco and Scuola dell’Indecisione, in Bellastock Festival Superstock. Scuola dell’Indecisione is an informal group of people (architects, artists, planners, designers) that met each other during the events “Incontri del Terzo Luogo”, started from 2012 in Lecce, with Gilles Clément, at Manifatture Knos. The informal group believes in small human actions able to improve the space in which they take place. «Bellastock lead a work of research-action, proposing methods applied to the problematic of the cycles of matter while placing the social aspect in the center of the project. We assure the sharing of ideas through the organization events that look after the diffusion of knowledge to the largest types of audiences. Through events as construction festival or workshops, projects are built in public space.
It’s the opportunity to apprehend notions of uses, (re)definition of common space and the citizen design of the city. Taking place in a real context, those projects integrates a larger project of urban mutation, implementing a network of local actors. By providing “masterclass”, framed by a team of professional craftsman, we intend to lead experimentation around discarded matter as resource. It is mostly turn towards urban furniture design, landscape and architectural interventions made with reused materials». (from www. futurearchitectureplatform.org) Our team works on the construction of a shared garden in the Parc départemental de la Bergère. We worked with the association ActiVille, that already made some little actions in the park. We worked with wasted wood, we built some tables and bench, three structures and a big hammock. At the same time we made interventions in the garden with citizens and students.

Réinventons nos places! Jardination & Ital’Île project Paris (FR) | with Coloco&Co, Daginsky, Ville de Paris 2017 Squares are freedom spaces where citizens collective life are represented. For this reason squares are one of the most important elements of the city. In contemporary cities its role changed and the slowness of squares rhythms has been substituted. Two big cornerstones of Parisian life, Place d’Italie and Place de la Nation, in the last decades, became complex systems of car traffic, losing their role of meeting and aggregation places. For that reason Mairie de Paris decided to rewind the time wheel, taking back to their original function seven squares of Paris (Place de la Bastille, Place de la Nation, Place d’Italie, Place Gambetta, Place des Fetes, Pantheon, Madelaine) engaging citizens with a concertation process from which Administration was able to found four principal themes (accessibility; practices, uses and animation; identity, heritage and landscape; sharing economy and innovation) and four objectives (public space requalification creating more pedestrian, vegetation and slow circulation areas; public space uses diversification and identification; accessibility; fortify the connection between each square and its environment).
Place d’Italie and Place de la Nation have been entrusted to COLOCO, with whom I worked for 6 months; together we focused on citizens participation in order to create a sensible diagnostic of the two squares, focused our analysis on gender perception of the space. We organized meetings each week with habitants and we stay on site for one month, where we also made several activities : urban furniture construction, signalisation intervention, gardening.
In order to actualize this, each square has been entrusted to the work of an architecture&engineering office, focused on the infrastructural project, and to a collective, focused on backing up citizens in this transformation process.

Reescrever o nosso bairro Transcribe Summer Lab Braga (PT) | with Space Transcribers 2017 The Transcribe Summer Lab: Socio-Spatial Practices in Braga’s Social Housing Neighbourhoods has been an experimental and theoretical-practical laboratory. It intends to gather a number of multidisciplinary agents and professionals in order to discuss the context and the existing problems in three social housing neighbourhoods in Braga, Portugal. This Summer Lab emerges within the scope of the project (Re)Escrever o nosso bairro [(Re) Writing our Neighbourhood]. This is a three-year project coordinated by the Braga City Council that includes a set of social inclusion initiatives and which, in articulation with Braga’s Strategic Plan for Urban Development, focuses on the rehabilitation of three social housing neighbourhoods in Braga: Bairro de Santa Tecla, Bairro Social das Enguardas and Complexo Habitacional do Picoto. This project acts through the design of activities that foster a sense of identity and belonging between Braga´s social housing and the community. in Braga, towards the creation of innovative pedagogical, social and artistic programmes, which intend to become catalysts for new opportunities. We worked on Santa Tecla, a social housing neighborhood in Braga, going through a regeneration development process that will affect almost 500 residents. We built an ephemeral road (made of flour) was created with the Roma community of Santa Tecla social housing neighborhood in Braga as a way to bring awareness - in and out of the community - to the refurbishing project planned for the site; as a way to demystify perceptions of intolerance towards Roma; as a way to show that it is possible to work together for a common goal. Outcomes were: 3 days of performance with citizens, postcards, one performance in the city centre and two videos. We also create a site about the project, that will be online soon. Site homepage

«Art is not supposed to change the world, to change practical things, but to change perceptions. Art can change the way we see the world» JR, photographer. During my studies, because of my researches and the last master project, I worked and deepen the relation between city and art, element able to bringing the people together, improving spaces, changing everything around.

A pavillon for Aestethics of Marghera Venice (IT) | Workshop III | with Tyin Tegnestue Arkitekter 2013 Method, team work, collaboration with people that we don’t know: these were the keywords of the workshop, organized by Tyin Tegnestue, Norwegian architects that showed us their way of act before and during a project. Their approach can be resumed with one sentence: «Don’t think too much before you start doing. Don’t do too much before you stop and think» Nabeel Hamdi The first approach to the design process was the creation of a “beautiful physical object” (a sculpture) able to represent the aesthetics of Marghera as knowledge of the site gained through the senses. The model was built with a single sheet of wood-paper, using other tools such as photography, drawing, text, collage and collecting various materials gathered during the site inspection. Our team realized a pavilion for Venice and the public. Marghera is shaped by empty and

full, duality that we translated in the structure with opened and closed façades. The sculpture represented the elements of “stop and motion”, that we can clearly see when we cross the industrial city near Venice. “Motion” element is represented by the first step that the viewer has to do to climb the pavilion. On the top he has to stop and look and the “object” and at the lagoon (Marghera’s scenography). The structure allowed an elevation upwards to symbolize the overcoming of the ideal barriers that characterize the site. The wood that we used for pavilions was kindly offered us by the group Marziani di Santa Marta and had an interesting history: it came from the Canadian Pavilion of the Biennale of Architecture in 2012. The material, originally intended for disposal was instead recovered and made available to the community.

City can’t leave out elements that should be a dogma for its own life. In a country where cinemas, theaters, bookstores are closed if they don’t have a brand of a multinational chain, it’s clear that we need to preserve the small activities that still resist, away from the vulgar and empty fire sale, from spersonificazione of places and their commodification. Marco Polo tells Kublai Khan of invisible and indeal cities Walking in Padua we heard the invisibility of some places in an attempt to create a fictional town, centered on the idea and concept of economic and trade exchange, exchange that apparently must avoid addressing the social, cultural, human. Walking in the historic center, memory of spaces seems to be lost: buildings, emptied of art and poetry that fed them and made them reference points for citizens, are only the dilapidated backdrop to an indistinct flow of people and consumers. Altino Mignon Cinema, Theatre Concordi, Crystal, forgotten names, confused uncertainty of what they will be. Our desire was to return their name, giving the city the lost memory through the real and human exchange.
CITY & EXCHANGES One of the factors in the transformation of the ancient city and its practical use is trade. Despite it in modern city major distributions spread goes to the detriment of small traders, often leading to a commodification of places and representative urban landscapes of the city, which often influenced public policy.

CITY AND MEMORY The analysis that we did bring us to think about identity, history and memory loss in some city centre spaces of Padua. We notice in particular how important cinemas and theatres (cultural places) are today empty and crumbling.

RISK Buildings abandonment leads to their dismantling, creation of empty volumes, without identity, history and social function. They become volumes where the inhabitants don’t rec ognize themselves, but for which they can be consumers. In the Padua centre, theatres and cinemas are now consumer factories.

CITY AND NAME | CASE STUDY Our concept work was influenced by comparison with interesting experiences and good practices that combine the cultural function (theatre, cinema, museum) with the business (local and handcraft trade).

At the bottom of previously analyzed events and distancing from the model proposed by the administration, our intervention idea aims to reappropriation of the center through building and public spaces requalification actions that leads to memory and identity promotion.
IDENTITY
The objective of this policy is to reinvent the centre of Paduan cultural base: make Padua a urban experimentation and hybridization laboratory of art, culture and everyday life languages, that is, interpreting the culture in its deepest sense as a relationship and continuous exchange with the elsewhere and with each other.

Storie di beni comuni. Nel mare di esprienze: il confronto tra Lecce e Ravenna Venice / Lecce (IT) | Master Thesis | Giulio Ernesti | 2015 My educational path brings me to discover city issues, in particular the ones linked with public spaces management. For that reason I decided to wrote my final thesis about urban commons construction as a process outcome. The first part was written with my colleague Giovanna Antoniacci, with whom I shared master laboratories, during which we often worked together on abandoned spaces. Together we get lost in the “sea” of experiences and bottom-up practices and theories, understanding that it isn’t possible talk about commons if we don’t tell the stories of people that construct them.
I took as case study an independent cultural center in Lecce, South of Italy. The structure was a school abandoned since 90s that a group of young people of the city decided to restore in order to create a public space where everyone could create their own initiatives and activities (corresponding to the values of the place, of course!). The particularity of this process was that promoters decided to involve actively citizens in the transformation of space. In this way everyone was an important part of the process.

Radicepura Garden Festival A proposition for the festival scenography Giarre (IT) | with Coloco & Arch. Francesca Borrelli 2016 Radicepura Garden Festival is the first Mediterrean Garden Festival. It has been located in Sicily, in the context of the Radicepura vivarium, it lasted six months, from April to October 2017. I participated to the first phase of the project. I worked on the proposition of the scenography with Pablo Georgieff from coloco, artistic director of the festival, and the Italian architect Francesca Borrelli.

We worked proposed to build a Mediterranean garden, a market based on Mediterranean diet, a food area, with an ephemeral structure and food-tracks. Everything with sustainable and green principals. The outcomes that we presented were three panels and a deep dossier about the proposition, with also the cultural project.

FuoriVia Project Ancient paths in Europe from 2016
FuoriVia was born in order to continue and develop the experience of Landscape Ecology Seminar promoted by the IUAV University of Venice held by professor Virginio Bettini since year 2000. We are a Cultural Association born from a group of students, ex-students and walkers. We study landscape and urban ecology, following the historical cultural routes. The project started in 2000 walking along the Camino de Santiago (until 2006). From 2007 to 2012 we continued through the Via Francigena from Rome to Canterbury and in 2013 and 2014 from Rome to Otranto along the Appian Way. In August 2015, our journey started once again, this time from Durrës (Albania) to Bitola (FYROM), along Via Egnatia and, in August 2016, we walked from Bitola (FYROM) to Thessaloniki (Greece). In summer 2017 we will continue from Thessaloniki to Kavala (Greece). FuoriVia Association aims to promote the walking practice, the slow trip in all its forms, the sustainable tourism practices and solidarity, through study, research, teaching and design. These objectives will be pursued rediscovering historical, natural and cultural paths through field research, study and analysis. We aim to support routes recognition and protection by local national and international organizations.

In order to pursue these goals we need to create stable networks and interaction with local communities, through active listening, involvement and participatory planning. FuoriVia aims to give to each participant the capacity to analyse the territory, the landscape and the planning; it would like to give an integrated teaching model, that facilitates the interaction between students of different classes; it aims to upsetting the traditional form of lectures, by promoting the study approach “learning by doing”; it aims to permit the walking path construction through the study of the landscape history, cartography and socio-cultural relations of the places that we cross; it aims to interact with local administrations and institutions that deal with the issues addressed; it aims to learn the walking philosophy into the intermediate stages and during the walking activities. In 2015 we started to think about how new tecnologies can interact with these pratices. Thinking about that and working on an university exam we create an android application that permit to register and shared different forms of path.

Internship & Collaboration Coloco - Contemporary Landscape Creations from 2015
When I went upstairs for the first time in the atelier I felt the energy and the passion of the young team that hosted me. They made me feel part of the équipe from the very first days and little by little I felt that my work was appreciate. I feel that they trust me and it was pleasure went at work every day: they teach me a lot of technical things, I’m not a landscaper and they take the time to explain me everything, with calm and patience. They teach me and show me how to built a participatory process and they bring me to one of the best experience that I ever had, the “Incontri del Terzo Luogo” in Lecce. Working abroad it’s important also in order to see and understand our limits, because of the language, because of the entry in a system that it’s already consolidated; but It’s unforgettable the sensation to break your limits and understand that working hard, showing your passion and dedication will bring you a lot satisfaction. And that’s one of the most important lesson that Coloco taught me.

Het onder één noemer brengen van de « metropolitan timeline » en de cartografie vormt de basis van wat we noemen de « Map of Commons ». Deze map is bedoeld om zelf in het territorium gebracht te worden om daar verschillende expertises op te slaan: technische expertise, beleidsexpertise, humane wetenschappen, gebruik,…
L’accouplement en un seul document de la « timeline métropolitaine » et d’une carte du site compose le support de ce que nous appelons la « carte du bien commun ». Cette carte est destinée à être portée dans le territoire, pour recueillir les différentes expertises qui constituent la commission partagé: expertises des techniciens, des gestionnaires, des sciences humaines et d’usage...
Het verzamelen van deze expertises uit het terrein rond de map of commons, vormt de kern van onze methodologie.
Cette articulation des expertises immergées dans le terrain, autour de la carte du bien commun constitue le cœur de la méthodologie de travail de notre groupement.
De Map of Commons kan geïnformeerd en bijgewerkt worden doorheen het werkproces om zo tot een reeks “snapshots” te leiden van de map: V1 ,V2 ,V3 ...
La carte du bien commun peut être informée & actualisée tout au long du processus de travail et peut donner lieu à autant d’instantanés (snapshots) appellés V1 ,V2 ,V3 . Lors de ce travail animé et évolutif, notre équipe invite les acteurs, et ceux qui souhaitent le devenir, à mettre leurs souhaits et propositions sous forme de fiches actions..

I would like to conclude my book with Maria Lai’s (Sardinian artist) work Legarsi alla montagna (1981). I think that it can sum up what take action in the urban space means to me. In this performance there are all elements that should be considered in urban practices: urban fabric is linked with natural elements, citizens and art.
