MULTIMEDIA CAFE’ & BUSINESS INCUBATOR

PORNOTOPIA, EGOPORNOTOPIA

VENISE BIENNALE: ORNAMENTA

ARCHIZINES: COMMONZINE

MULTIMEDIA CAFE AND BUSINESS INCUBATOR IN UCCLE The project takes place in Brussels periphery in Uccle’s residential area in the south of the city. Two restaurants, a café, a public square - that hosts a weekly market - are in the direct connection with the site. It’s a perfect situation for creating a small scale activity center. The program for this front street plot goes along this idea of dynamisation of the area which combines a multimedia café and business incubator. The proposal is to extend the activity to both public places: the square on one hand and the small wooded park at the rear of the plot on the other. Two different volumes are positioned so that they have visual connection and accompany the visitors in the (re) discovery of this abandoned area of the neighborhood. The aim is to invite the walkers to take ownership of the inside block.

P O R N O T O P I A « What characterizes Pornotopia is its singular ability to establish relationships between space, sexuality, pleasure and technology (audiovisual, biochemical, etc.), altering sexual conventions and genres while producing sexual subjectivity as a derivative of these spatial operations (...) a place able to build a theatrical fiction of the sexuality » -Beatriz Preciado, Pornotopia p.118-119 « Pornotopia: An Essay on Playboy’s Architecture and Biopolitics » dissects, using tools borrowed from gender and architecture, Playboy’s modus operandi. Preciado describes the contents forefront of the magazine, its role in the testimony of modernity in architecture and vision of the 1950s man and his interior with the emergence of the “bachelor pad”. Playboy is also an empire in which Hugh Hefner plays with different emblems such as his mansion, the hotels, the « bunnies” ...

EGOPORNOTOPIA. The manifesto of Egopornotopia I suggest for this project is intended as the extreme category of Pornotopia. In this dimension, the environment, space, technology, sexuality and pleasure have a purpose of self-centered gratification. The character of Hugh Hefner would draw a sufficient reflection on its own enjoyment. The example par excellence, the “pharmacopornographic” circular bed of H.Hefner is a multimedia platform (as Preciado explains) from which Hefner controls its daily activities; he eats there, works there, he sleeps, plays... This is a place of real concentration of power and domination but also it participates in the stimulation of his ego.

PROJECT FOR THE END OF HH’s LIFE

« the interesting thing is how one guy, through living his own fantasies, is living out the fantasies of so many other people » -H.Hefner These images are the allegorical representations of Hefner’s egopornotopia. As a static representation the story represents a layout of elements recovered in his history, imagery, catalog etc. It’s a composition of a room where Hugh Hefner is represented as his own circular bed. He sees and reaches the elements and events that are directly or indirectly referenced and which support the survival of this auto sufficient universe.

A R C H I T E C T U R E BIENNALE.BELGIAN PAVILION : ORNAMENTA “Interest in ornament, which was claimed then denounced describes a kind of sine wave, never interrupted or broken. Alternately considered an important marker of a culture of force and demonized as fetish and anachronistic, an easy link with a meaningless past -Alina Payne 2010/2011 PERSPECTIVE A white room. The visitor is facing a unit, bright, carved from the inside. The apparent uniformity of space is parasitized by a relief, an abstract image superimposed. The location is occupied by a set of depths, amplified by the movement of shadows depending on the changing light. Between smooth surfaces and moldings, contrast produces the effect of a continuous element that proliferates along the walls, floor and ceiling. In front of this body, resulting in an assembly of disparate elements, the visitor composes his own reading of the space .

ARCHIZINE WORKSHOP: COMMONZINE “Archizines” is primarily a collection of alternative architecture and independent publications. It’s also a traveling exhibition that brings together 60 architectural magazines fanzines and papers from over twenty countries. The exposition explores these archizines as platforms for the exchange of critical comments in the field of international architecture. The workshop covers these reflections and proposes to produce a small publication according to different themes. As regards, the disposal data base, the Belgian magazine « A + », which incidentally celebrates its 40th anniversary. The group working with the graphic designer Manuela Deschamps-Otamendi is particularly interested in the theme of “ordinary”and harvests images, recurring phrases and juxtaposes them to create a critical reflection of architecture magazines.
