General Overview

The entire 3D model has been modeled using photos and quick sketches. This project is my first approach to the Subdiv modelling process.

PROCESS

patch layout Subdivs are a sort of mix, between nurbs and polygonal modelling, implemented in ALIAS 2020. In order to use this powerful tool at his best the entire process was based on some golden rules about the polygonal modelling; In a second moment, when the right shape is found, the nurbs tecniques are used to add some details. So that this tool has not been used as a polygonal or nurbs software, but as an hybrid of them.

PROCESS

subDIV STAGE - BOX MODELLING Polygonal modelling At this stage it was important to plan how and where to put the subdivisions to have the right shape and a good edge/vertex flow. Less divisions and bevels were put in this phase and the smartest will be the workflow and concept development. Modelling criteria Almost all the faces of the steering wheel are quadrangolar. Trying to avoid to create triangolar and N-Gons (multiple Sided) polygons led to a more smooth and regular patch layout of the shape. A straight flow of the edge loops, and a relationship between polygons with the same number of vertices brings to a proper and nice flow of the highlights. In this way surfaces and subdivisions work more efficiently. Planes and curves has been used to align the vertices and extruded edges. Subdivision’s edge close to each other were creased, in order to avoid unwanted smooth. No additional operations (trims, intersect, booleans, fillets ecc.) were used till the end of the sculpting to mantain edit capabilities. After that, some parts could be approached with nurbs.

PROCESS

NURBS STAGE - Detailing SUBDivs to NURBS When the right shape was reached some tools like project, trims, fillets were used to detail the volume. Nurbs modelling fits better and faster for some kind of parts. Images and sketches have been used to find the right proportions between the elements.

PROCESS

SUBDivs to NURBS The majority of the object such as the steering wheel rim, the crown and the central part have been modelled with subdivisions. Instead of Audi cover, logos, plates, shifter paddles, stitches/seams and ideograms were built in NURBS. Stitches and seams Ideograms Cover, logo Paddles Trim

diagnostic shade Diagnostic view gives us the real proportion of the model and some diffuse highlights. It is useful to have a first general look on how lights flows along the entire surface and the continuity between each patch and the others.

DIAGNOSTIC SHADE Black/white horizontal stipes and IsoAngle shade was used during the entire modelling process, not only at the end of the 3d model. The main goal was trying to achieve the best reflection and surface flow as much as possible. Follow polygonal and nurbs modelling golden rules led to a general smooth and uniform flow of reflections through the entire volume. Subdivisions aim not only at fast concept and detailed design workflows, but also bring to a good quality surfaces.
