#1999.01_Italy-Venice
Two phases Ideas Competition for the New headquarters of IUAV (Venice University Architectural School). Two phases Ideas competition. Admission at the 2nd phase.
The project includes an articulation of open spaces that provide a possible increase of public life in the area . Two bridging connections, one with the terrace of the “Cotonificio” and the other with the Campiello Oratory expand the range of public spaces. Inside the alternate “places” such as the typical “sotto-portego”, gallery, porch and terrace. The coverage becomes feasible by changing the traditional relationship between inside and outside of Venice, producing multiple visual relationships with the context: Il Mulino Stucky, il Cotonificio, the church with the bell tower of St. Nicholas’ Mendicoli and the Venetian roofs with “altane”. The continuous incline of the walk highlights the different perceptions due to the “slow” human pitch .The project is structured in compliance with Italian law. Four “cornerstones” are the main load-bearing vertical elements: they support the spiral structure of the building on which it develops. Support shelves of considerable size cantiliver from the concrete structure and support a special steel structure of Vierendeel type, which constitutes the structural grid of the facade.
