The label of “homeless” can have derogatory connotations for some individuals. It implies that a person is “less than” and can impart feelings of shame to the person. Instead, using the statements, “A person experiencing homelessness” or “unhoused” can convey better that the person is experiencing homelessness currently, but it is not defining who they are as a person.
