Muslim Women and Islamaphobia In light of a recent statistic released by the Met Police, which states that hate crimes against Muslims in London have risen by 70% in the past year. In these attacks, Muslim women comprise a disproportionate amount (60 per cent). An example of this abuse can be observed in recent footage of two Muslim women on a bus in Brent, North London, depicting how "visibly" Muslim women are far more susceptible to targeted abuse. In particular, Muslim women who wear the Niqab are likely to undergo more aggressive incidents. According to CDR Mak Chishty, there are a number of reasons why Muslim women are targeted more than Muslim men: their physical attire, for example, easily distinguishes them as Muslim. This panel will discuss and explore the oppression and barriers Muslim women are facing, as well as touch upon their experiences. More details can be found on the Women’s Officers Facebook page or contact womens.officer@sheffield. ac.uk Tuesday 15th March, 5.15pm, Free. Meet in Arts Tower: AT-L09

Intersectionality 101 Intersectionality: The theory of how different forms of oppression intersect and impact on people’s lives. The term ‘intersectionality’, coined by the Black feminist lawyer Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw in 1989, was created to illustrate the racism and sexism that Black women experience in the workplace in the US. Intersectionality has since become an analytical tool for looking at how different power structures interlink, function and impact on people’s experiences in feminism and other liberation movements. It understands that one person’s oppression will be different to another person’s when multiple oppressions are at play. For example, gender and racial oppression will work together to make a Black woman’s struggle different to a white woman’s similar to the oppression of LGBT+ and disabled women. This workshop will explore intersectionality in general to what it is, the importance of it and its role in feminism and liberation. More details can be found on the Women’s Officers Facebook page or contact womens.officer@sheffield.ac.uk
