Join us on our chocolate tasting journey in one of Sheffield’s finest chocolate abodes. Come with us as we explore the wonders of chocolate from around the world. Relax in the Cocoa Lounge where you will learn the history of chocolate and the cultivation of cocoa from bean to bar. Then travel through the spectrum from raw chocolate to sweet white chocolate; this promises to be a magical evening.

This fantastic facility at Rother Valley operates by pulling you around a 750 metre circuit with overhead cables. You'll start off on knee-boards, and then move on to try wakeboarding or water-skiing. You must be of average fitness, have good eyesight (see 50 meters unaided) and be able to swim 50 metres in open water. Price includes transport, tuition from BWSFqualified instructors, wetsuit & equipment. Bring swimwear and a towel.

Chatsworth is a truly awe inspiring traditional English stately home and a must-see attraction! More than 30 magnificent rooms display one of Europe's finest private collections of treasures. The 105-acre garden is beautiful, with a huge maze, rare plants, fountains and the famous Duke's Cascade. You could bring a picnic to enjoy in the grounds, or enjoy refreshments in the Courtyard.

Meet on Durham Road at 11.30am, £26. Price includes travel, suit hire and wakeboarding lesson. Please bring a swim suit and towel. The coach departs at 4.30pm; travel time is approximately 1 hour.

Sheffield University Medics’ Choir are recruiting. They are a friendly and informal society of students from all disciplines that meet weekly to sing both for fun and to prepare for concerts. They sing a variety of music, from Elizabethan madrigals through classical singing and show tunes up to the present day. They are a non-auditioning choir that is compromised of mixed singers of all different levels of experience – all you require is a love of music. Come along and try it out for yourself in this Give it a Go session.

Located in one of the UK's first purpose built combined Fire and Police Station in the centre of the Steel City, Sheffield, it's the perfect place to step back in time and FIRE your imagination. Come face to face with some of the most amazing and rare Fire & Police vehicles around! The museum is now the world’s ONLY Fire & Police museum and its tower is the only still standing Fire Service Tower of its type in the UK. There are opportunities to get involved with interactive displays and it's a great museum to find out more about the history of Sheffield.

You don't need a partner or any previous experience-we have patient professional teachers that can teach you all the steps. Capoeira

Capoeira is an exciting Sport that combines Martial Arts, Dance, Acrobatics and Music. A Brazillian Art with African roots, Capoeira will improve your strength, balance and flexibility, and is a fun way of getting fit. From kicks to cartwheels, singing to spinning, there's something for everyone! This session is run by the University Capoeira Society and is a special price for beginners. Sheffield City Centre Ghost Tour

Who can forget those wonderful evenings spent playing Monopoly and Cluedo, shouting at each other and wondering why you decided to try again a year after that incident? BoardSoc would like to invite you to an afternoon of playing board games in a friendly environment where you'll find out that there's more to board games than shouting at your family. The slightly more important spiel is that this is the best time to give BoardSoc a go. If you're not sure whether the newer designer games they usually play are going to be your sort of thing then this is the best way of finding out. Meet in the Activities and Sports Zone at 2pm, £2. We are finishing off Orientation week with a Ghoulish Ghost Tour of Sheffield. See Sheffield in a totally different light; you must have wondered what spooky secrets lurk in Victorian Sheffield. Take this guided tour around the dark heart of the steel city to discover the ghosts and ghouls of the past. You'll be amazed at the secrets Sheffield holds… from scandals and murders, to some very bizarre occurrences! Wear warm clothes and bring an umbrella if necessary. Wudang Kung Fu and Qi Gong

Wudang Kung Fu is designed for keeping healthy while at the same time gaining many effective fighting skills. Famous for its high kicks, fluid movements and low stances, Wudang Kung Fu helps you make your body stronger and more flexible, and will make you more agile and stable. Qi Gong is a set of exercises aimed at unlocking and releasing internal energy. This is achieved by stretching exercises, static postures and breathing awareness. The main goal is to improve health and wellbeing, aligning body and mind. Meet in Students’ Union Foyer at 5pm, £2. Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Event finishes at 7pm.

If you have always wanted to try archery now is your chance! Archery club will introduce you to archery where you will learn how to loose arrows as well as answering any questions you have about the sport. They will also show off the other types of bows you can shoot. There will be a fun competition towards the end of the session. Meet in Activity Room 3 in Goodwin Sports Centre at 5.30pm, £4.50. Get involved in theatre during your time at university with SuTCo. Whether you're highly experienced or want to take to the stage for the first time, come along and get a taste of the unique experience that is acting. There will be an opportunity to understand how an actor builds a character. You can have a go at working from contemporary and Shakespearian texts and there will even be the chance to try out some physical theatre! Come along and get a glimpse of one of the university's most active performing arts companies and have so much fun doing it - just don’t mention Macbeth… Meet at No.66 at 12pm, £2. Interested in joining the university’s samba band? No previous drumming experience needed, just a sense of rhythm and a love for groovy, percussive, Brazilian music. In this session, the society will perform a piece, explain their role inside and outside the university, teach you some of the rhythms they use, and let you try out the different drums.

Come along to Stitch Soc and have a go at making some bunting. They have a large range of patterned material to choose from and throughout the session they will teach you what to do. Bunting is a great way to decorate your new room or to give to someone as a present! All levels of experience welcome. All materials provided.

Writing Workshop with Distance Group Comedy Revue Training Session

The Sheffield Comedy Revue is Sheffield University's premiere stand-up, sketch and written comedy society! This Give it a Go workshop will give you an introduction to writing and editing pieces. Would you like to know what lies beneath the ground you walk on? Could you listen to the truth about the Victorian city you live in? Then come and listen to the true tales of the Sheffield criminals on the Crime and Murder Tour. Learn about the hardships and deeds that took place in the back alleys and courtyards of Sheffield, the murders, riots, prostitution, petty theft and racketeering.

Get to know the city centre on this walking tour which will take you to see many of the city's attractions including the City Hall, the Peace Gardens, the world famous Crucible Theatre, and the Cathedral. The tour will finish at the luxury Leopold Hotel where you will enjoy the very English delight of afternoon tea (includes tea and a scone) in a private suite.

This event will be a chance to create a beautiful, disability themed work of art on a t-shirt. You will be provided with paint, some example stencils and a t-shirt (please request t-shirt size after you have bought your ticket, you can make your requests from the Activities and Sports Zone Information Desk). It will also be a chance to ask the committee any questions you have about disability in general or at the University of Sheffield without worrying you are being nosy! Improvised Cross Comedy Stitching

Our friendly student and staff beekeepers will show you the basics of beekeeping at our very own Students’ Union beehives! You can handle the bees as much as you want to, or stand back and watch these fascinating creatures at work. At this time of year there should be lots of honey at the hives. Although you can book to see the bees for free throughout the summer months, this Give it a Go ticket includes a jar of lovely, local Sheffield honey; So ‘bee’ sure to come along.

Dancing in clubs… it's okay. But where's the style? Where's the… romance? You need something a bit different, a bit Latin American: Salsa. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, this session will teach you how to twirl at all levels with a spicy mix of students who have a passion for dancing. This class will give you a chance to try out a variety of different dances such as Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Rueda, Kizomba and Reggaeton.

Amnesty International Banner & Mug Painting

Join Amnesty International for some craft with a cause. Help them to make a banner which will be crucial in spreading the message for their upcoming campaign, as well as decorating your own mug with a human rights themed design. Don't worry if you're not too artistic, it's just for fun! You can then bring your decorated mug to their 'AmnesTEA' event at The Edge Cafe for a free cup of tea on Monday 29th September, 4-6pm.

Come and get green with Give it a Go as we go Blackberry picking. Now will be the perfect time to pick these beautiful pieces of fruit, and you will be shown the best places to pick them this time. You will also be given a little mini tour to the Student Eats Allotments as well as gaining information on societies and committees you could get involved with who are ‘green fingered.’ Plus, drop off some of your Blackberries at the Edge Dining Room and they will be turned into a Blackberry and Apple pie for you to collect for free on Sunday!

Studio Ghibli Gospel Night #01 Choir

Mooting is an excellent extracurricular activity for aspiring lawyers. In the session you will be introduced to mooting in a friendly, non-competitive environment to highlight what is involved. The session will be focussed on how to construct skeleton arguments, find authority and how to structure your arguments as well as giving a short introduction to the formalities involved with mooting. Mooting is an invaluable way to increase your understanding and participation with the law in a practical, fun way. It is a great way to meet new, likeminded people, so come along and have a go! Peak District Walk – Stanage Edge

Come and see the beautiful Peak District for yourself on this 12km (7.5 miles) walk. Starting at Bamford Station you’ll be walking to the popular Stanage Edge which offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, before heading to the picturesque village of Hathersage. Meet outside Sheffield Train Station by the Water Fountain’s at 9.30am, £3. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Give it a Go recommends a waterproof jacket and trousers (no jeans) and sun cream if necessary. Bring plenty of water and a packed lunch as there will be a chance to stop for lunch along the way. You will be catching the train to the start which will cost £6 (or £4 if you have a railcard). Only those with GIAG ticket will be allowed on the walk due to safety. Event finishes at 5pm

A Wildlife Walk in the Peaks

Ladies Rugby

Want to play with some oddly shaped balls? Then give ladies rugby a go! No experience needed whatsoever. Wear sports gear, trainers and bring water. One of the best perks of being a University of Sheffield student is living in a city bang slap next to the Peak District National Park! The Peaks are a vast mosaic of rolling hills, rocky crags, huge reservoirs, extensive moorland and lots of idyllic little villages (and pubs!). This makes it a fantastic place for all kinds of wildlife from moorland specialists such as red grouse and short-eared owls to some of Britain's quintessential rural plants and animals. Bring along your binoculars, cameras and identification guides and join the Natural History Society on a walk in the stunning Peaks to spot and identify the local wildlife! Judo is one of the world's most widely practiced martial arts or combat sports and showcases breath-taking throws (tachi-waza) and ground fighting techniques (ne-waza). In this session you will be shown important falling techniques then go on to learning a few basic throws and ground techniques which you will then be able to try out with each other and more experienced Judo players during free practice (randori). It will also include a Judo based warm up including a few games which encourage agility and speed and gives a great cardiovascular workout.

Want to get a step closer to being a wine connoisseur? Renishaw Vineyard is part of the beautiful historic Renishaw Hall, which sits just outside Sheffield. The vineyard is at its best at this time of year. The African singing workshop is great way to meet like-minded people who love singing in an informal environment. Throughout the year SingSoc volunteer in schools doing this workshop! It is fun, interactive and sounds great after a short amount of rehearsal. Whatever experience of singing you have, complete beginner to choir enthusiast, everyone is welcome! If you are new to SingSoc and decide to become a member of the choir you'll get £1 off membership with the ticket.

Come and learn the basics of cheerleading from the Sabrecat Pom Cheerleading team! The squad compete at national level competitions and perform throughout the year to cheer on other sports teams, from football and basketball to the Ice Hockey team. They also cheer during the annual varsity and perform at many major fixtures! Come along and meet the committee, learn and perform a short routine, have a go with the pom poms and try out some of splits and tricks! No experience is necessary.

Chinese Calligraphy is an ancient Chinese art. No prior knowledge of Chinese is needed for appreciating its beauty. It is also a way of meditation, establishing “qi” and building Chinese characters as a fine art! Come to follow a step-by-step instruction on applying ink, producing simple strokes and writing Chinese characters. You can go for more complex practice if you already familiar with the language.

Want to try SCUBA diving, but not quite ready for the big ocean? Let SUSAC, our SCUBA Diving Club, help at one of their 'Try Dive' sessions at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. Social Volleyball

Judo is one of the world's most widely practiced martial arts or combat sports and showcases breath-taking throws (tachi-waza) and ground fighting techniques (ne-waza). In this session you will be shown important falling techniques then go on to learning a few basic throws and ground techniques which you will then be able to try out with each other and more experienced Judo players during free practice (randori). It will also include a Judo based warm up including a few games which encourage agility and speed and gives a great cardiovascular workout. Meet at Goodwin Sports Hall Foyer at 8pm, £2. United Nations Workshop

Gospel Choir

Come and enjoy a short introduction to the United Nations Association's weekly debates. This will involve a meet-and-greet and a fun debate on a topic of current interest. All are welcome from beginners to those who did MUN at school.

An opportunity to experience the lively, friendly Gospel Choir. They will teach you a couple of their songs to give you a flavour of their music. No previous singing or music experience necessary, just enthusiasm. Everybody welcome!

Give it a Go Ice Hockey will provide you with a one hour introduction to the sport, with qualified coaches showing you the basics of skating, passing and shooting, before splitting into teams and finishing with a scrimmage! The cost of the ticket covers ice time and a rental ice hockey kit provided by the club, as well as ice skate rental from Ice Sheffield. Transport costs to Ice Sheffield are not included in the price of the ticket, but there will be members of the club available to meet you and accompany you to the ice rink by tram, which leaves from the University of Sheffield stop and goes straight to the ice rink. If you want to try your hand at the fastest team sport in the world then this is the event for you!

Bakewell Walk and Haddon Hall

Fell Running

This will be a steady run on the moors above Sheffield to introduce people to the concept of fell running. You will split into 3 groups each running for varying distances and times depending on levels of experience and fitness. The longest run should last for no more than 1 hour, after which we will head back down to the university for lunch at Bar One.

Tucked away in the Peak District National Park hills, the town of Bakewell is very picturesque. Your day will start with a tour by guide Sally Mosley who will take you to see the prettiest bits and tell you snippets of local history and interesting facts. Along the way you will sample traditional Bakewell Pudding for which the town is famous. After some free time to find lunch among the numerous cafes, tearooms or pubs, Sally will lead you on a two mile walk through fields and stiles on a riverside path to Haddon Hall - the best preserved medieval manor house in the country. Dating back to the 12th century, Haddon is a place of romance and charm and the setting for numerous films and dramas including Jane Eyre and Princess Bride.

RAG’s ‘Adopt a Charity’ scheme works with clubs, societies and individuals to help you fundraise for charities of your choice. Sheffield Students’ Union’s Give it a Go programme is packed full of activities, events and experiences. Every year thousands of students take part in Give it a Go, and you should too!

BUYING TICKETS Tickets for all activities are on sale at the Students’ Union Box Office (tel: 0114 222 8777) and are available to buy online www.sheffieldsu.com/events Tickets MUST be purchased in ADVANCE and ucards must be shown at the Box Office. You can’t just turn up and pay on the door. Demand for Give it a Go is massive and events can sell out very quickly… please buy your ticket early to avoid disappointment! Unfortunately, all tickets purchased are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged or transferred. If the event organiser cancels the activity, a full refund will be given from the Students’ Union Box Office. Participants will be informed of cancellations via facebook and twitter, and email where possible.
