Women Only Self Defence

Our women only self-defence workshop specialises in techniques particularly appropriate for women. All selfdefence situations are stressful, but this is often particularly true for women. This session will give you the tools to build a solid background of techniques. The session includes examining the psychology of an attacker, situation awareness, avoiding conflict as well as conflict resolution. You will learn basic blocking techniques, defences to common grabs and strangles, how to effectively strike your opponents as well as vulnerable points to attack when in trouble. To supplement this, some basic combat anatomy will be discussed, enabling you to learn locks and pins to overpower people much stronger than yourself. There will be a male instructor leading the class. Monday 9th February 4-6pm, £3. Meet in the Studio in the Students’ Union. Please wear loose clothing, trainers, and bring a bottle of water.

Beginners Running Tour of Sheffield
Come and learn how to weightlift! This session is open to all regardless of experience, whether you have been in and out of the gym for years or never picked up a barbell; everyone is welcome! Weightlifting is a growing sport and a great new hobby. The club are passionate about the sport and their members and would love you to join their community.
Taekwondo, is a Korean martial art that focusses on kicking, jumping and spinning whilst combining self-defence, sport and exercise. All levels are welcome. Meet in the Students’ Union foyer 30 minutes before the start time of the session. Wear loose clothing and bring a bottle of water.
Come and join in on a guided running tour that will introduce you to some of Sheffield’s many sights. This run will be catered towards beginners, and will include designated stops at some of the city’s landmarks and most important and popular places for students. Come and discover Sheffield while getting some exercise in a social group.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art which utilises the opponent’s force against them, neutralising attacks with strikes and joint locks using technique, power and timing. Shodokan Aikido introduces competition, which allows techniques to be practiced in a free-play, combative environment. Tuesday sessions are suitable for complete beginners, so come along and try something different. Tuesdays: 10th February, 24th February or 17th March 4.306.30pm, £3.50. Meet at the Glossop Road entrance to Bar One. Please wear loose clothing; no zips or jewellery.

Jiu Jitsu
Jiu Jitsu is a self-defence martial art that uses: throws, locks, and strikes to counter aggressive situations ranging from unwanted harassment to armed physical assault. Jiu Jitsu uses your opponent’s energy and momentum against them and this can be easily practised by anyone regardless of size, weight, age or gender. No previous martial arts ability is required. Wednesday 11th February 8-10pm or Sunday 15th February 3-5pm. For all sessions: £3, meet in Goodwin Sports Centre, room: Activity Room 1. Wear loose clothing. Tie hair back and make sure all jewellery is removed. It is advised that you cut your nails short and bring a bottle of water.

Self Defence - 5 week course
Our 5 week self-defence course will give a solid introduction to the concepts of self-defence including: psychology, situational awareness, avoiding confrontation, diffusing confrontation and the actual physical act of defending yourself. To supplement this, some basic combat anatomy will be discussed, enabling you to learn locks and pins to overpower people much stronger than yourself. This will culminate in a practical exam that will test and prove your knowledge. Should you pass, you will receive an Amateur Martial Arts Association (AMA) issued award certificate. Wednesdays for 5 weeks: 11th February – 11th March 7.30-9.30pm, £15. Meet in Endcliffe Student Village, room: High Tor 5. Please wear loose clothing, trainers, and bring a bottle of water.
Judo
Judo is one of the world’s most widely practised martial arts or combat sports and showcases breath-taking throws, and ground fighting techniques. It was invented in Japan in the late 19th century and has been an Olympic sport since 1964. In this session you will be shown important falling techniques before learning basic throws and group techniques, which you will be able to try out on each other during free practice. Thursday 12th and 19th February 8-10pm, £2. Meet in Goodwin Sports Hall Foyer. Please wear comfy, loose clothing and bring a bottle of water.
Muay Thai is known as the art of eight limbs, it is a striking martial art that utilises: kicks, punches, knees and elbows. Come and give it a go! All levels of fitness are welcome. This is a great way to get fit, learn how to defend yourself in a practical way and, of course, a chance to have some fun! Friday 13th February 7.30-9pm, £2. Meet in Goodwin Sports Centre, room: Activity Room 2. Please wear gym-wear and bring a bottle of water.
Aikido Kangeiko
Kangeiko is an Aikido winter training session spanning over a week in which you are challenged to complete 24 hours of training. Sessions will take place every day, and you are given 3 payment options so you can attend the ones you’re available for. The syllabus will start at the very beginning on Sunday, so complete beginners are welcome! This is a great opportunity to jump right into the sport and take more than just a glimpse into the martial art, especially suited to those looking to challenge themselves. Sunday 15th February 11.30am – 2pm, £5. Sunday 15th February 11.30am – 5pm, £7. Monday 16th - Saturday 21st February. Meet Monday at 7am, £20. Scuba Diving Try Dives
Want to try SCUBA diving, but not quite ready for the big ocean? Let SUSAC, our SCUBA Diving Club, help at one of their 'Try Dive' sessions at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. Aimed at beginners, you must be able to swim and have no disqualifying medical conditions (information from training@susac.com). You'll start with a safety and theory talk followed by one-on-one instruction in the pool. Equipment is provided. Sunday 15th February. Meet outside the main entrance to the Students’ Union at 3.40pm, 4.10pm, 4.40pm or 5.10pm, £8. Bring a towel, swim wear and a spare t-shirt to wear in the water. Plus, extra money for the bus fare. From travel time, your lesson and return back to the union lasts 2 hours.

If you have always wanted to try archery, then now is your chance! The sessions will be an introduction to archery with you learning how to loose arrows as well as answering any questions you have about the sport. There will be an opportunity for you to look at other types of bows you can shoot and there will be a competition towards the end of the session. Monday 16th and 23rd February, Wednesday 4th March or Monday 9th March 5-7pm, £4.50. Meet in Goodwin Sports Centre, room: Activity Room 3. Please do not wear open toed shoes.

Social Running: Intervals for Beginners
Come and join the ‘Social Running’ group for a fun and friendly interval running session. This session will be led by qualified run leaders, and catered towards beginners. Interval training involves alternating periods of faster running with periods of slower running or rest, and is a great way to improve fitness! Wednesday 18th February 3-4pm, £1. Meet in the café at the bottom of Goodwin’s drive in Goodwin Sports Centre. Wear running trainers and suitable sportswear.
Peak District Walk: Ladybower Reservoir
See the lovely Peak District for yourself on this 10 mile (16.5km) walk. Starting at Bamford Station we will be walking to the popular Ladybower Reservoir, a picturesque lake settled in a valley surrounded by pine forests and moorland. We will then ascend up the nearby Win Hill where we’ll get spectacular views of the surrounding countryside before heading to the countryside village of Hope. Saturday 14th March 9:45am – 5pm, £3. Meet inside Sheffield Train station by the departure boards. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the conditions on the day and be prepared if they change. We recommend you bring a waterproof jacket and trousers (no jeans) along with plenty of layers. Please also bring sufficient water and a packed lunch as we will be stopping for lunch along the way. We will be catching the train to the start and back which will cost £6.70 (or £4.45 if you have a rail card). Only those with tickets will be allowed on the walk due to health and safety.

A fantastic opportunity for those of you interested in learning how to print in 3D. In this workshop you will be briefed on an introduction of 3D Printing and 3D Hubs, shown some of the designing software used in 3D printing, have a go at designing and then shown how it is printed! Macramé 5 Making Week Course Challenge
Art Society will show you how to make your very own dream catcher. This is a great chance to get crafty and meet some new people! All materials are provided, so all you need to bring is yourself. Macramé is the art of decorative knotting. Popular in the Victorian era and revived in the 1970’s Macramé is a great way to explore a passion for bohemian retro, or create sleek and contemporary designs. By learning a few basic knots and techniques you can create beautiful jewellery, knots, bags, home décor items and even clothing! So what’s it to be? A stylish beaded plant holder or a tassel poncho to go with your paisley flares?! You decide on our 5 week course where you will be a Macramé pro in no time!

Dream Catcher Introduction Making to Crochet
How quickly could you make a film?! In small groups you’ll have 24 hours to write, shoot and edit a short film from scratch! You’ll plan your film on the Friday evening, and then we will meet up again to shoot and edit it the next day, so you’ll have plenty of time to sleep overnight! All equipment will be provided, and most films end up lasting around 4 minutes. Each group will be supported by members of the Film Making Society’s committee, so even if you know nothing at all about film making this is a great chance to learn more about it, meet new people, and have a lot of fun! Henna Painting with Hindu Soc Come and have a go at making your own Henna from powder to paste, also learn how a cone is made. Come along to Stitch Soc and learn how to crochet. They have a large range of patterns and wool colours for you to choose from and throughout the session they will teach you what to do. This workshop will teach you how to make stop motion animation and how to make it look slick and professional before giving you the opportunity to create your own short stop motion video in small groups. Under the guidance of Forge TV you’ll get the chance to make your own plasticine models, set up the shots, and those who are interested, can even edit their film! If you’ve ever wondered how Wallace and Gromit are made or just want to learn a new creative skill, this fun workshop will be a comprehensive introduction to the subject.

This hands-on workshop, given by the Film Making Society, will teach you all about the importance of lighting and cinematography in film; everything from lighting theory and how to light your shots, to camerawork and crafting the overall look of your film. You will also get the chance to play around with a camera and full light kit on a film scene! This workshop is aimed at beginners, and is a great chance to learn all about the visual side of film and how to make your own films and videos look great!
In week 1 learn how to use line and colour to recreate pieces and print with letter blocks by hand. In week 2, learn how to re-create still life with pencils and how to use shadow and lighting. You will then learn how to hand-print using ink and Speed-ball Linoleum Cutter. In week 3, your final product and test will allow you to produce a piece of art work and showcase the skills you have learnt. This is a practical DIY arts course and GraphCAD Society is investing £300 in course equipment!

Lishi Soft Kung Fu
This short exercise session will introduce you to Lishi Tai Chi and Yoga. You will learn movements and breathing that make you fitter whilst also helping you to relax and feel good! Wudang Tai Chi is an Internal Martial Art based on Taoist principles. Its graceful and slow movements combine circular motion with wide leg stances and controlled breathing. Tai Chi is aimed at improving the practitioner’s health by unifying body and mind, stimulating blood circulation and regulating breathing. On top of that, every movement has its own martial application so it can be applied in combat. This session is led by The Confucius Institute.

Kung Fu is designed for keeping healthy while at the same time gaining many effective fighting skills. Martial Arts always incorporate the use of weapons in their systems. The Sword is an emblematic weapon for the Wudang style and it’s known for its circular, flowing and connected movements. In this session, you will learn about the weapons and try practising with them, learning some very basic and simple moves. Weapons have been modified for practise and are suitable for beginners. Sheffield University Medics’ Choir are recruiting. They are a friendly and informal society of students from all disciplines that meet weekly to sing both for fun and to prepare for concerts. They sing a variety of music, from Elizabethan madrigals through to classical singing and show tunes up to the present day. They are a non-auditioning choir that compromise mixed singers of all different levels of experience – all you require is a love of music. They rehearse weekly on a Thursday at 7pm, after which they head to Interval for a drink. Come along and try it out for yourself in this Give it a Go session.

Tour of Parliament – Give the General Election a Go
In the lead up to the General Election 2015, we’re giving you the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament in London to see for yourself how it all works. Walk the corridors with the leaders of the country, watch a live debate unfold, explore the building’s 1,000 year history and take in the incredible architecture and artwork on display. The day will include a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster’s, home to the House of Parliament, a meeting with local MP for Sheffield Central, Paul Blomfield, and a chance to sit in the public gallery and watch a live debate take place. Before you head back to Sheffield you’ll also have some spare time to spend in London too. Make sure you don’t miss your chance to see how the country is run, up close and personal! Learn Graphic Design 6 Week Course
In this course you will learn the interface and basic methods of sketching, dimensioning and constraining sketches in Solidworks software, a very useful CAD tool. You will learn how to convert 2D into 3D, working with different techniques such as Extrusion, Revolving and Sweeps. Modelling parts form engineering drawings; you will learn how to read engineering drawings going from easy to more complex. Towards the end of the course you will be able to model a component and test its capabilities using CAD.
This course is run by the GraphCAD Society and will cover the fundamentals of good design: marketing campaigns, designing logos, cover arts, topographies, mobile and website design and print design. At the end of the course there will be a projects based session where you have to create a material of your choice based on a specific topic. Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate and will be asked to create a creative professional portfolio for yourself.

This course is an engineering Computer Aided Design (CAD) course that teaches you how to model real machinery parts in computer and simulates forces on them. In this 6 week course you will be taught the essentials of using the world class engineering simulation software in Fluid Dynamics & Solid Mechanics , ANSYS. First stop is Shakespeare’s birthplace where the story begins; you will gain access to see where Shakespeare grew up and spent his first five years of married life with Anne Hathaway. Hadrian’s Wall is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England and is listed as a World Heritage site. The wall was built is 122 AD by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a form of defence from other invading countries. The wall once stretched across the whole of Northern England from East to West, just over 117km, and included military forts and signal towers which symbolised Roman power in both Britain and Rome. Today, only parts of the wall still remain and on this trip we will be visiting Housesteads Roman Fort which is the best preserved part of the wall. The afternoon will be spent in the nearby town of Carlisle which too was a Roman settlement. Here you will have free time to explore. You could check out the Citadel tower, the cities’ cathedral or wander around the shops. Sunday 8th March, 7.30am – 5.30pm, £30. Meet at the Glossop Road entrance to Bar One at 7.30am. This overnight stay in the Peak District will give you the chance to explore local attractions as well as enjoying an adventure filled Saturday. We will be visiting: Eyam, Castleton, Mam Tor and Edale. Eyam is full of history while in Castleton you can grab a bite, explore the landscape or even head underground into Peaks Cavern. At Mam Tor you can enjoy beautiful views over this landscape. We then head to our hostel via Edale where you can decide to take the short 1.6 mile walk, or stay in Edale for a while longer. Your evening will consist of a meal, board games and laughter. On Saturday, we will begin our group adventures: archery and high tops (tree climbing)! After lunch, you have some free time to explore before we head back to Sheffield. Friday 13th – Saturday 14th March, 11am – 4pm, £80. Meet at the BGlossop Road entrance to Bar One at 11am. Ticket includes: a coach tour, return travel from Edale, one nights accommodation at Edale YHA with an evening meal, breakfast and lunch, and an activity on Saturday. Clumber Park is a beautiful expanse of parkland, heath and woods covering more than 3,800 acres. Clumber was once the country estate of the Dukes of Newcastle and although the house was demolished in 1938, there are many glimpses of its grand past to explore. From the Gothic-style chapel, often referred to as a 'cathedral in miniature', you can follow in the footsteps of dukes through the peaceful pleasure ground to the Walled Kitchen Garden. Our Society Mash-Up events are hosted by two or more societies who have teamed up to share their skills and interests in a new and innovative way. We are now looking for more societies to get involved and create events with an international or cultural twist. The events will be entirely funded by One World and any money made from ticket sales will be split between the societies! If your society would like to get involved then please email One. World@sheffield.ac.uk. You do not need to have a specific idea before contacting us; we will help you to develop one and then help you find a society to team up with.
What languages do you want to speak? Tandem Language is a great chance for you to finally start improving and sharing your language skills. We will be showcasing a variety of languages and we will help you find a ‘tandem partner’ – someone who can teach you a language in return for you helping them learn a language. Everyone is welcome regardless of your current language ability. Monday 16th February 6-8pm, £2. Meet in Fusion in the Students’ Union.

Create your own 1st March Talisman Romanians, Bulgarians and Greek and Cypriots have a tradition for the 1st of March to wear a specific bracelet with a charm, or talisman, called Martishor/Martenitsa/Martoui. At this event you can learn how to create one, and wear it to celebrate the beginning of Spring! Sunday 1st March 12-2pm, £1.50. Meet in the Activities and Sports Zone.
Carnival is a tradition found in many cultures around the world including the annual Carnival of Venice. Get into the spirit with us by making your own Venetian Mask. Don’t worry if you are not particularly arty, we will guide you through all of the steps, and you will leave the workshop with a gorgeous mask to wear on a night out, or to decorate your home in a unique way. Tuesday 10th March 4-7pm, £3.50. Meet in the Activities and Sports Zone in the Students’ Union.
What do you know about Islam? Join us for a guided tour of Sheffield Islamic Centre and discover a faith practiced by over 1.5 billion people worldwide. The tour will include a general introduction to Islam and a chance to explore Sheffield’s largest mosque! This event is free so please email One.World@sheffield.ac.uk to book your place. Wednesday 11th March 9.30am - 11.30am. Meet in the Students’ Union by the Welcome Desk. Please be aware that you will have to take your shoes off before entering the centre. Your ability to understand and communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds is now seen as one of the most important attributes by graduate employers. Sheffield Students’ Union’s Give it a Go programme is packed full of activities, events and experiences. Every year thousands of students take part in Give it a Go, and you should too!

Tickets for all activities are on sale at the Students’ Union Box Office and are available to buy online www.sheffieldsu.com/events Tickets MUST be purchased in ADVANCE and uCards must be shown at the Box Office. You can’t turn up and pay on the door. Demand for Give it a Go is massive and events can sell out very quickly… please buy your ticket early to avoid disappointment! Unfortunately, all tickets purchased are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged or transferred. If the event organiser cancels the activity, a full refund will be given from the Students’ Union Box Office. Participants will be informed of cancellations via facebook and twitter, and email where possible.

WOMENS COMMITTEE The Women’s Campaigns at the University of Sheffield Students' Union consists of the Women's Officer and the Women's Committee. Together they work to make your student experience free from discrimination and sexism, alongside the other Liberation Campaigns. Look out for the Women’s Committee logo for events specifically designed for self-defining women.
WOMEN’S MINIBUS For evening activities in the Students’ Union, the Women’s Minibus will take you home to your door anywhere within a 2-mile radius of the Union. The service runs at half past every hour and tickets cost just £1.50 from the Students’ Union Box Office.

ROOM LOCATION – Students’ Union All Gallery rooms, the View rooms, Uni Central and the Media Hub are on Level 4 in the Students' Union. The Raynor Lounge and Bar One are on Level 1 in the Students' Union. Fusion, Foundry and Studio are on Level 2 in the Students’ Union. Coffee Revolution and the Activities & Sports Zone are on Level 3. The Council Chambers, Meeting Room 1, 2 and 3 are in the Octagon Centre, next door to the Students’ Union. No 66 (TV Studio) is situated on Leavygreave Road (opposite the Hicks Building). Goodwin Sports centre is located on Northumberland Road (on your way up to Crookes).
