Dear Friends, Our goal at Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) is to be a national model of animal sheltering. Over 8,000 companion animals, exotic species, farm animals, small mammals and orphaned and injured wildlife find refuge, healing and new beginnings at DCHS each year. We are a frontrunner in community outreach, providing adoption services, humane education and wildlife rehabilitation, but we strive to do more. We would like to have the resources needed to grow and expand our core programs and services, thereby helping more people and more homeless animals in our community and beyond. Your support continues to help us reach our goals! As supporters of DCHS, you understand the importance of compassion and empathy. Together, we are committed to promoting a more humane community, and you will see that reflected in our everyday work. From providing specialized care for animals, reuniting lost pets with their families, adopting animals into new homes, collecting and distributing pet food for local food pantries, to offering guidance and education programs, the staff and volunteers at the shelter are here to help! << Rewind Bark & Wine Thank you to everyone who celebrated with us at the 15th annual Bark & Wine! Attendees had the chance to snuggle with some of the adoptable and alumni animals that received care and compassion at DCHS - because of your support. Together with 225 supporters and friends, we enjoyed live and silent auctions, a wine pull, delicious hors d’oeuvres, drinks and desserts, all while raising over $80,000 for the animals! Dogtoberfest This year’s Dogtoberfest, presented by Spectrum Brands, was an overwhelming success! Over 900 people and 400 pups joined Dane County Humane Society for a fun-filled afternoon of live bluegrass music by Milkhouse Radio and Oak Street Ramblers and costume contests emceed by NBC 15’s own Christine Bellport! Capital Brewery served its finest brews, and Madison favorites Ugly Apple Café, OSS and Miko Poké provided scrumptious options for lunch. The energy of the day was lively with dancing, laughing and tail wagging happening throughout the bier garten. We couldn’t have asked for a better day!
Paws for Pints Cat lovers and DCHS supporters alike enjoyed a purrfect day in Capital Brewery’s bier garten during Cat Care Clinic’s annual celebration of cats, Paws for Pints. Folks enjoyed tasty Capital brews, delicious food from Pots-n-Tots and Jakarta Café, won fantastic prizes and consumed cake to celebrate Cat Care Clinic’s 30th anniversary! With such fun activities to enjoy throughout the day, Paws for Pints was a simply meowvelous fundraiser for DCHS!

Fast Forward >> Haunted Trail October 14, 21, 28, 2017 Kids’ Trail 2-5 pm; Adults’ Trail 6-9 pm
Every fall, we transform one of our Main Shelter dog walking trails into a spooky experience for DCHS supporters and thrillseekers alike. There will be a kids’ trick-or-treat trail earlier in the day with family-fun activities, and an adults-only trail in the evening where our monsters will give you the scare of a lifetime. Don’t miss appearances by our one and only Big Foot, as well as decorations that will really put you in the Halloween spirit! This event is weather dependent, so please check our website for updates.

Looking for a fun and educational way for your child to spend their school breaks? Have them spend the day with Dane County Humane Society! Your child can learn about animals, from basic pet care to how they can help wildlife, play games, complete service projects for the shelter and more! Toto’s Gala Friday, March 2, 2018
Our 5th annual Toto’s Gala will be full of exciting new features! We are moving the event to the beautiful Monona Terrace, which will allow easy parking for guests, great views of Lake Monona and more space to slip on those (ruby) dancing shoes. Toto’s Gala will kick off with a cocktail hour in the gorgeous Grand Terrace, then move into the Ballroom for dinner, a heartwarming presentation and stories of animals following their own yellow-brick-road journeys to their new families. As we wrap up the night and turn up the tunes with the debut of our Toto’s Gala after-party, you’ll realize that you’re not in Kansas anymore! Ticket sales start in January at giveshelter.org. Alumni Updates Paprika After being found alone in Fitchburg, this Australian Bearded Dragon was brought to DCHS with an injured back leg, but a sweet, curious personality. DCHS’s Animal Medical Services team determined that she would need her back, right leg amputated to live a healthy, happy life. Thanks to the help of UW Veterinary Care’s Special Species Health Service, her surgery was a success. Paprika rested and recovered in a DCHS staff member’s office, spending her days sunning on the window sill. Occasionally she would look up at you for a pet on the head or to be picked up to snuggle on your shoulder. At the end of September, Paprika was adopted by the O’Connor family - Sandra, Sean, Lily and Evan. Her full name is now Paprika McLegger. She joins a rescue critter family of three cats, a hedgehog, a three-legged Crested Gecko named Tripod McLegger and a three-legged Basilisk named Stumpy McLegger.
Lawson This adorable Florida White
rabbit came to DCHS from an overcrowded shelter in November 2016. Though he was a young gentleman with a sweet personality, Lawson didn’t find his forever family until July 2017! For Lawson, it was well worth the wait for the Armstrong family. He is adored in his new home that he also shares with Snow White, another DCHS rabbit alumnus.

Alice (FKA Bastet) This sweet kitty went
from stray to Star! Alice was adopted by WKOW 27 meteorologist, Star Derry. She earned the name Alice because she was “dainty and adorable, but so bold and brave...like Alice in her little Wonderland.” “I’m so grateful for her. She has become my best friend. She wakes me up minutes before my alarm each morning by climbing on my chest or gently pawing my face. We’re pretty much attached at the hip. I’m so grateful to DCHS for setting us up to be a successful pair.” - Star Derry
Hatchling Turtles In 2016, Dane County
Humane Society’s Wildlife Center admitted a total of 3,280 animals. By the end of September 2017, the Wildlife Center had already admitted over 3,700 injured or orphaned wild animals for the year. Thirteen of those wild patients were hatchling turtles.
An adult female spiny softshell turtle was hit by a car and admitted to the Wildlife Center in June. Unfortunately she died on arrival, but we were able to save her eggs. In August, 13 eggs hatched! We released them back into the mother’s habitat at the end of September. They all swam away beautifully! Dane County Humane Society|giveshelter.org

Trouble is a Friend of Mine
“I was immediately drawn to Ash. He looked like trouble and his description didn’t try to cover that up. It was obvious that he had too much energy for his own good. So, going into meeting Ash, I already had it in my head that he would be a little crazy.” These were David’s words as he thought back on that July day when he decided to come meet a 2-yearold Shepherd mix with a penchant for overly rowdy play as well as a fear of men. Ash, formerly known as Bently, had come to Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) from an overcrowded shelter in Denison, Texas. It was clear when Ash arrived at DCHS he had a loving soul, but his life thus far had left him with few manners and uneasiness around men. David, however, was no stranger to rescue dogs with a complicated past. Six years prior he had adopted Oso from DCHS, a high energy Australian Cattle Dog mix who was also fearful of men. So, despite the fact that Ash’s new owner would need a lot of patience and understanding, after 127 days at DCHS, Ash found himself heading to his forever home.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I immediately fell in love with Ash and felt that my life would be a lot better with him in it,â&#x20AC;? said David. Ash had come a long way in order to find love at first sight. He had traveled 916 miles from a shelter in Texas, where his future was uncertain, to DCHS, a shelter with Adoption Guarantee status. Thanks to supporters like you, this Adoption Guarantee means that every healthy or treatable animal that comes to DCHS can stay as long as it takes to find a loving home. For most dogs at the shelter, it only takes around nine days until they find their forever home. For Ash, however, it took over 14 times as long.
For him, and so many other animals at DCHS, the Adoption Guarantee not only means a temporary home for as long as they need it, it also means they will receive care and attention to help make them better adoption candidates.
Every day, dedicated staff and volunteers are helping reduce stress, calm fears and teach manners with the goal of finding pets loving homes more quickly. During his stay at DCHS, Ash was enrolled in the Behavior Modification Program, where staff and volunteers employed techniques to help him learn appropriate ways to greet and play with others, as well as build his confidence around men. As Ash’s stay at DCHS grew longer, staff and volunteers started to see the strain of shelter life wearing on him. To calm Ash’s anxiety, he began spending many of his days relaxing in the office of a DCHS staff member who provided him with soft beds, a mountain of toys and lots of positive reinforcement. Even though Ash was a high energy pup, quiet time in the office brought out his gentle nature and sweet personality. He became quite the snuggler! By the end of his 127 day stay, Ash had come a long way learning manners and overcoming his fears, thanks to the dedication of DCHS staff and volunteers. We knew he still had a long way to go, but Ash had found his perfect match in David.

Oso, like how to pee standing up, how to greet the mailman and the joys of chasing squirrels and digging holes. David said that it took a few months, but one day he could see a change in Ash. It was Ash finally realizing he had found his forever home with his forever family.

Greetings from Amy Good
The soulful brown eyes of my office foster dog Daisy quickly captured my heart. Three weeks into my new position as Assistant Director of Development at Dane County Humane Society (DCHS), I adopted my fourth DCHS alumnus, now renamed Maisie. Maisie is a senior Shepherd/Husky mix who was shy and nervous in the dog kennels. To help her relax, Maisie would spend much of her day in my office, where it was quickly apparent we had a special connection. She embodies the DCHS spirit of being a place of refuge, healing and new beginnings, as does the beginning of my DCHS story when my family adopted a shy abandoned puppy (also named Daisy) when I was four years old. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been humbled to help Dane County individuals and families through my 16 years at the Urban League and Habitat for Humanity. My volunteer service has always included animals, and I feel blessed to now connect my career and deepest passion together by joining DCHS on its journey to be the national model of animal sheltering and community outreach. We are fortunate to have outstanding resources for homeless animals and orphaned and injured wildlife at DCHS. Thank you for so generously giving your time as a volunteer, adopting an animal, helping wildlife and/or donating funds to support our mission.
