Gizem Caliskan Architecture | 2018-2021
For the last 2 years, I have been running my own business Rota Architecture as the architect and experienced different phases of the architecture profession including interior design, renovation, visualisation and technical drawing, communication with clients, contractors and suppliers, technical issues, coordination of the teams, and project budgets. I have done two interior design project and a renovation project that Builds a strong customer relationship especially with the key decision-makers is also an essential part of my job. At the same time, I am studying a part-time master’s degree in architecture at the Fontys University of Applied Science.
BACKGROUND
Previously, I worked for NO35 Architecture, where I gained considerable project management and design skills as an architect. The firm mostly works on the design and application of commercial spaces but also architectural projects. Because of the business system of the firm that is every employee is responsible with all the process of a project in a single time, I could get experienced about 5 architecture projects and 12 interior design projects in terms of 3d visualisation, design, technical drawings and supervision on construction site. I was managing customer projects, coordinating cross-functional teams, managing customer/3rd party relationships, providing solutions to the issues faced at all phases of the projects and presenting the projects’ status to upper management and other stakeholders.

SC apartment is a 95m2 flat located in the historical centre of Lisbon. The building built in the 1930s and not used for the last 20 years, it was in a bad condition. The project includes structural reinforcement, new installation, new plan layout, and interior design. The apartment is designed for short-term rental service so the customer requested a design that will be affordable and chic for future tenants. I have provided the complete revision of the existing plans, visualisation, technical drawing, supervision, and coordination of the teams.

KS house is 446 m2, two storeys detached house, located in New York. The client requested interior design service for master bedroom and bathroom, library room, den, club room, home office and exterior of the building including 3d visualisation, shopping list, and application drawings. The project timeline covers 2 year of design process. The projects of the bathrooms and library were completed yet.

Yagcılar Houses
Location: Izmir | Turkey Project Team: Tugba Turan Gizem Caliskan, Meltem Onem
The project is located in the countryside of Urla that is surrounded by olive trees, gorgeous old stone houses, cobblestone streets, olive and vine ateliers, antique local stores. The five sibling clients requested five houses for each family that has its own private spaces but also not separated completely. They also ask for this housing complex to be in harmony with the context, and a terrace that is facing the view of olive groves. Traditional Urla stone is used as a cover material of the facades. The terraces are all facing the same direction but designed as not have direct view between each other. Interior design of the houses are also compatible with existing traditional fabric of the context. I was responsible with modelling and preparing the project for municipality approval.

The first restaurant of Kısmet opened in most historical center of İzmir, kemeraltı at 1967. The artisans restaurants of Kısmet which is one of the places that best reflect the spirit and historical returns of the city. Third branch restaurant of Kısmet that is located in a modern shopping mall, reflects the traces of historical turkish restaurants. My resposibility in this project is 3d visualisation of the design, consisted of extensive technical drawings, sections, elevations, and supervision on the site.

Feriye Palace Culture Center

Feriye, is a multi disciplinary venue that showcases many different activities and events, is right on Bosphorus shoreline and a short walk away from Istanbul’s highest quality hotels, restaurant, shopping areas, city’s financial district. The Feriye Palace has been used as an education building for the last 30 years. It was aimed to be transformed into a cultural center after renovation. The aim was to create a culture, art, life, eating, drinking and meeting center to ensure a continuous customer circulation throughout the day and creating an accessible space from business person to student. It includes multi-purpose room, cinema, foyer, coffee&bakery, co-working area and studio kitchen. I was part of the design team and responsible for modelling, 3d visualisation, technical drawings.

The aim is to designs a private dwelling for the chosen fashion designer that accommodates places for living, eating, cooking, sleeping and bathing extended with a sewing workshop and a place to present the fashion to an audience. Important part of the design is to translate the characteristics and story of the fashion designer into an architectural object by designing the wrapping (surface, elevation), relations (open, closed, transparent, translucent, routing) and atmosphere (structure, tactility, light, materiality).
