PREFACE The architectural perspective and design value I stand by are: Research and inspiration, Creative Process, Context and History, and User Experience. Choosing a specific approach in research can help to navigate through the complex discipline of architecture and even contribute to decision making with better outcomes as a result. I became fully aware of the importance of the concept and story behind your design that can shape and inspire you, and also use of different design tools that allow you to extend your limits and provide freedom in the design process. Not only digital tools, anything can be seen as a design tool like playing with material with your hands can lead you to different possibilities with design. I am willing to be an ‘inclusive engaged architect playing a public role. I believe architecture should primarily focus on establishing a better relationship between human, nature and contributing to society. .

(Re) Activate Communality
2021
Stadspark Pavilion Location: Tilburg Guidance: Martijn Honselaar Jacqueline Moors Project Team: Gizem Caliskan
I completed this project during the internship in Otnwerplab, Tilburg. The current task was to investigate how religious ensembles of church, monastery, rectory, patronage, school, schoolyard, and garden can be of value for future communality. These ensembles once formed the heart of the Tilburg community. However, the ensembles are disappearing, Because in this communality people can become familiar with each other and a (temporary) bond can arise through exchange. We examined in outline the role of the religious ensembles now and during a number of phases in the development of the urban structure and community of Tilburg. We then examined three ensembles in detail and each student present a pavilion proposal for on ensemble areas. During the project, I became aware of the architectural perspective and design value I want to add to this profession which are research and inspiration, creative process, context and history, and user experience. Research can be conducted in several ways and Pavilion projects in ontwerplab which is a great example for me as the design product of research about religious history and context in Tilburg. I think a flexible approach towards the users and the public is necessary. This is exactly what I intend to do within reactivating communality and pavilion proposal project in Ontwerblab. with designing the pavilion for different age groups and programmes to emerge and reconnect the society with the site and communal history.

I realized that the use different design tools allows you to extend your limits and provide Freedom in design process. Not only digital tools, anything can be seen as an design tool. Even a piece of bread can lead you to a concept or a way of thinking. Or sometimes playing with material with your hands can lead you to different possibilities with design as I used the folding technique in Pavilion design. That provided a lot of connection between different user and programme.

Designing a product or structure on this way can be reversible into flat sheet and mobilize all the products which can make the design not only aesthetic and functional but practical for cosmopolitans, passengers, refugees or for the modern nomads.

I think a balanced and flexible approach towards the users and the public is necessary. Like while designing the pavilion for different age groups and programme to emerge and reconnect the society with the site and communal history. The folding form of the pavilion provides facade diversity and creates dynamic relation inside the park.

International Art Museum
Location: Izmir | Turkey Tutors: Bahar Durmaz Efe Gözen
This project is the result of the graduation studio in my bachelor degree education. The main objective of the project was to design a museum and a building related to an urban strategy that is to reveal the multiple layers of history, connect the urban landmarks and historical sites, diplay how architecture contrubitues to a city’vision, integrate the socio-cultural characteristics. Kadifekale context has hosted different cultures since the 3rd century BC. The summit where Kadifekale castle and proposal museum area are found is located at a distance of about 2 km from shoreline and commands a generl view of a large part of the city of Izmir. Kadifekale hill area covers six quarters constituted bu slums. Thus, the concept of the project aims to incorporate with the residents provide educations and associate different cultures under a new public realm.

Both historical and geographical feature of Izmir show that it is a city which becomes a host for different cultures and nations for years. Even todays, the effect of multi-culturalism of Izmir can be seen as weel as historical ruins. While the International Art Center hosts visitors and art pieces from all around the world, Turkish Art Center provides art education for dwellers, volunteers and tourists.

Gaultier House
Location: Master of Architecture Tilburg Fontys University Project Team: Gizem Caliskan
The aim of the project that I completed in the first year of masters degree programme, is to designs a private dwelling for the chosen fashion designer that accommodates places for living, eating, cooking, sleeping and bathing extended with a sewing workshop and a place to present the fashion to an audience. Important part of the design is to translate the characteristics and story of the fashion designer into an architectural object by designing the wrapping (surface, elevation), relations (open, closed, transparent, translucent, routing) and atmosphere (structure, tactility, light, materiality). The main object that shapes the relation between spaces and inspired by the Gaultier’s fashion design approach is the the Porous Wall. It creates a clear boundary that that can be change the strategy of designed space in terms of public-private relations and makes new transitional spaces that are neither public nor private, creating new spaces to design and imagine. The aim is generally creating interconnections between private and public space, establishing physical and visual connection, providing new perspectives for the curiousity of outsiders and the homeowner.

SC HOUSE
Location: Lisbon | Portugal Project Team: Gizem Caliskan
SC House is a renovation project I have completed in Portugal under my own company Rota Architecture. It is a 95m2 flat located in the historical centre of Lisbon. The building built in the 1930s and not used for the last 20 years, it was in a bad condition. The project includes structural reinforcement, new installation, new plan layout, and interior design. The apartment is designed for short-term rental service so the customer requested a design that will be affordable and chic for future tenants. I have provided the complete revision of the existing plans, visualisation, technical drawing, supervision, and coordination of the teams.

MASTER BATHROOM In this design, inspired by the humble complexity of the traditional island vernacular. The basic elements in the design are natural stone, wood wall panels and an earthy color palette. Some partition walls were left plain to blend with the landscape, and others are covered in traditional Greek whitewash, with rounded corners. Plants and ceramic sculptures decorate the house, adding to the relaxed and earthy atmosphere.

LIBRARY The library room works as a multipurpose room that provides different functions and different users; home office, exercise room, library, kids play room, and guest room. Built-in shelves provide space for built-in desk, exercise storage area and the owners’ belongings. While a strong language of clean lines was maintained in design, wood and plain white walls are two key design elements the material palette consisted of.
