Patriot Day: We remember, we rebuild, we honor O n Sept. 11, 2001, we were one year into the new millennium and just one week past Labor Day, the “working men’s” holiday long known for leisurely family fun at backyard barbecues and beaches nationwide. Little did any of us know how much our nation would change at 8:45 a.m. on that fateful day. It was a Tuesday morning, and the first American Airlines airplane flew into a tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. As people evacuated that building and its twin tower in front of a national television audience, 18 minutes later a United Airlines airplane flew into the second tower. The second crash caused an enormous explosion with billows of smoke, flames and debris scattering for blocks. We watched in shock and fear as planes were used as weapons of war to attack America on her soil. Glued to our televisions and radios, we were entranced by the horror unfolding in New York City. At 9:45 a.m. another American Airlines plane flew into the Pentagon building in Washington, D.C.
Less than 30 minutes after our nation’s military headquarters was attacked, the World Trade towers collapsed. Americans and the world watched helplessly as people trapped in the burning buildings teetered on window ledges, making the unimaginable decision to leap over 100 stories down to the sidewalk below instead of facing the choking smoke and deadly flames rapidly consuming the buildings. Meanwhile, yet another United plane was hijacked, and passengers and flight staff, who by this time had learned of the day’s previous events, courageously fought the terrorists aboard the flight. The plane flipped over and crashed into a rural field in Pennsylvania at 10:10 a.m., killing all on board. Over 3,000 people were lost on that single day in September, including 343 NYC firefighters and paramedics, 23 NYC police officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers, killed attempting to evacuate people out of the burning twin towers. Nearly 10,000 people sustained numerous injuries. Locally, neighbors came together in Columbus to console one another with a prayer service at the Colorado County courthouse. Cities across the country scrambled into action, uncertain if they would be next in the slew of attacks. Airports and public transportation nationwide came to a screeching halt, and buildings were evacuated in several major cities. Terrorists from Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations lived in the United States for over a year and learned to fly aircrafts at American
flight schools. Other terrorists who were part of the attack came into America in the months prior to the Sept. 11 attack. A total of 19 terrorists armed with box cutters and knives boarded four flights and changed America forever. In those hours and days to follow, we were no longer Democrats or Republicans, gay or straight, Black or white, officers or civilians – we were humans. We were Americans, and we joined hands and pleaded with God to bless America – to stand beside her, and guide her through the night with His light from above. In a televised speech later that night, President George W. Bush said, “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” President Bush proclaimed Sept. 11, 2002 as the first Patriot Day. Each year, Sept. 11 is known as Patriot Day, observed as a national day of service and remembrance for those Americans lost in the 2001 attacks. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, on the 20th anniversary of the day that changed the world, as we knew it, the Colorado County Fair proudly honors all first responders, active military and retired veterans as the 2021 Fair Parade Marshals. Trained to respond in emergencies, these men and women are the ones who run toward trouble instead of away from it, who risk their own lives to save ours, and for those selfless acts, we say “thank you.” Please join us at the fairgrounds any day of the fair for complimentary entrance (with identification).

Colorado County Academic Rodeo
The Garwood Lions Club will host the 15th annual Colorado County Fair Academic Rodeo during the 43rd annual Colorado County Fair. The idea of a way to challenge those students who don’t show an animal during the fair was hatched by Bill Carpenter, and has been moderated by himself and emcee Tom Kallina. For several years, the event was held under the entertainment pavilion, but was moved into the exhibit
hall a few years ago. Those who attend in cool, air conditioned comfort enjoy the academic rodeo. Mr. Carpenter says, “It is a fun event to academically challenge the youth, and for anyone who has watched the competition, you know it is entertaining.” Please make plans to come out on Friday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. and cheer on your favorite team! High school academic rodeo begins at 9 a.m., and junior high will begin at 10 a.m.

A
young singer songwriter whose rockytonk flare and soulful sound has quickly made a name in the Texas scene and beyond, Jon Stork was born and raised in Beasley, Texas. Growing up on the coastal plains and being from a musical family, he picked up a guitar after watching his older brother write, sing and perform in a band (shout out to Letters for June!). As the years went by, he began following new types of music, along with styles, that started influencing the young talent. Texas based artists such as Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Roger Creager and more, began taking hold, and the writing of original material started to flow. Working three jobs while going to college in College Station, Texas, Stork began to play locally and try his hand at sharing those songs
The Colorado County Citizen
that had come out over time. Eventually moving away from multiple jobs and the college scene, Stork found himself working in different cities across the country. Ultimately, this moving and shaking returned him back to Houston with not only a drive to make music work, but a pocket full of songs that he had been compiling out on the road. He was given the ultimatum of choosing between work and music, and the choice was made! Playing anywhere and everywhere he could, he found stability in regular gigs and paying shows around the area at local spots. Honing and learning as time went on, Stork recorded and released his debut EP, In Your Radio, in 2017, landing him amongst the top 10 artists on the iTunes country chart. Following the debut, the first stand-
alone single, Rodeo Blues was released in December of that same year, with One Night Stand to follow in 2018. Coming out of summer 2019, Stork’s first full length album, Radio Cowboy was released. The first radio single, Facts and Lies, went #1 on Texas radio in February, 2020. With the arrival of the second single, and the title track, Radio Cowboy, it emerged and climbed quickly, with it ultimately gracing the top of the charts at #2 for multiple weeks. Another Town was released shortly thereafter, in
25
Fall of 2020, and was crowned #1 in February, 2021. Stork released his final single from the Radio Cowboy album in March of 2021. If You Can Dance, hit the radio airwaves as requested by DJ’s across the state. As he tours and promotes his newest single, he looks forward to having new music on the horizon. “I’m so excited for the future. These songs are the best I’ve ever written. The next project is going to show how much I’ve grown and progressed as an artist and songwriter. I can’t wait for y’all to hear it!” -Jon

F
ebruary 1993, San Marcos, Texas: a phone call is made to a couple of members of George Strait’s Ace in the Hole Band from a member of Clay Blaker’s Texas Honky Tonk Band, a group that had often played shows with George and Ace In The Hole. The inquiry was about starting up a coun-
try jam session at a small, but popular night club on the town square. The jam would provide a place for players and singers to hone their skills on a normally off night and give some of the Ace in the Hole guys a place to pick when not on tour. On Monday, March 8th, 1993, the Monday Night Jam began.
As the weekly jam session grew in popularity over the ensuing years, musicians from all over came through town and stepped on stage to do their thing. Many of these artists and players moved on, never to be heard from again, while others ended up with record deals or made their way to the top playing with popular stars. Soon, the house band began receiving offers to play at other venues and events such as fairs, festivals, corporate events, and just good ol’ honky tonks in Texas, as well as in other parts of the country. Being a nameless band those first few years, the demand to play prompted the members to get a name for themselves. Because the band was born and reared at a jam session in a Texas honky tonk, the name Texas Jamm Band fell into place. For over twenty years, even as members have come and gone, the band has kept its core players. The music remains the same as when the group first began filling the dance floors of dance halls, night clubs, and special events venues. To this day, fans continue to enjoy the timeless and classic sound of The Texas Jamm Band, featuring members of George Strait’s Ace In The Hole band.

John Denver and the outlaw sound of Waylon and Willie was at the rage, along came the traditionalist Moe Bandy. The Texas singer with twin fiddles and steel guitar in the band kept Texas-style Honkey Tonk music alive, but it wasn’t easy. In 1972 Moe met record producer Ray Baker on a hunt-
27 ing trip and convinced him to listen to some demo tapes he had made. Baker agreed to produce Moe if he was willing to pay for recording session. Moe agreed and out of that session came Moe’s first hit song “I just Started Hatin Cheatin’ Songs Today”. GRC records picked up the song and released it nationally where it became a top 20 hit and that was just the beginning. Moe followed up with “It Was Always So Easy (To Find An Unhappy Woman)” and his first #1 hit “Bandy The Rodeo Clown”. His songs never strayed far from the traditionally Honky Tonk fare. Loving, cheating, drinking and patriotic songs formed the core of his music. Moe continues to perform to packed houses all over the world. More than anything else Moe loves to perform for his countless fans. Be sure to check out Moe’s website MoeBandy. com because he just might be coming to a town near you!

CCFA Pen of Three Heifers The Colorado County Fair pen of three heifers contest is designed to provide an opportunity for the personal growth and development of youth exhibitors through the ownership, care and showing of commercial heifers. Members of Colorado County 4-H, FFA and Junior FFA clubs are eligible to take part in the contest. The program has four key parts: record keeping, public speaking, written examination and grading of cattle. Each program part is judged by a set of judges knowledgeable in that area. The champion overall pen of three is the total combined score from each section with maximum scores possible of record book worth 15 points, public speaking 35 points, examination 20 points and grading of the cattle 30 points.
The record-keeping component includes physical recording of project information, analysis of data and presentation of a record book. The exhibitor describes their project and answers questions about their heifers and beef animal husbandry in the public speaking part of the contest. Exam questions are related to the beef industry. The exhibition of the project at the fair shows the results of the ownership, selection and care given by the exhibitor to their beef heifers. Adults (family and others) play an important role as they guide and assist the exhibitors with their projects. This interaction strengthens family bonds and provides an opportunity to meet and gain knowledge from a wider range of people than might otherwise occur.
The heifers are required to be purchased in Colorado County or adjoining counties and are sold during the fair’s junior sale. This aspect of the project encourages the improvement of local beef herds. Judging is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10 and projects will be offered for sale Saturday, Sept. 11 beginning at 1 p.m. The heifers are suitable replacement heifers in commercial beef operations. Come meet these young people with an interest in the beef cattle industry and support them at the sale.
