Whereas as of today, all of you have been mentioned as possible candidates for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in 2016; Whereas there are approximately 45 million registered Republicans in the United States who come from a variety of backgrounds and hold many different beliefs; Whereas in 1863 Abraham Lincoln, our first Republican president, opened the Gettysburg address with, “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal;” Whereas 120 years later President Ronald Reagan spoke out for inclusion within the Republican Party; Whereas national polling consistently shows that: 80% of Americans 18 to 29 support gay marriage 61% of conservatives who are 18 to 29 support marriage equality 56% of Republicans believe that the freedom to marry is a constitutional right and; Whereas one potential candidate stated recently that, "I hope that we can also show respect for people on all sides of the gay and lesbian marriage issue,” therefore, be it Resolved, that all Republican candidates for President of the United States in 2016 shall refrain from any anti-gay rhetoric.
