Like you, at Thermador we go to great lengths to achieve that balance. Take our latest innovation, the steam oven. ARIDO Awards 2010
2010 ARIDO Awards Program Celebrating Excellence in Interior Design The following pages present a visual showcase of award-winning interior design projects from the 2010 ARIDO Awards Program. This annual program celebrates the talent of Ontario’s registered interior designers. This year, a panel of five judges selected 29 projects to receive awards from almost 100 entries in 11 categories. Among the winning projects were 23 Awards of Merit, including three Sustainable Awards of Merit; five Awards of Excellence; and one Project of the Year. Each project was judged on its own merit by a panel of four members of the interior design profession and one guest judge from the design media. In each case, the judges considered creativity and innovation, as well as the effectiveness of the design solution. From corporate to residential, hospitality to healthcare, the 2010 ARIDO award-winning projects demonstrate how interior design can enhance public and private spaces. We hope you will enjoy reading about these projects and discovering what we mean when we say ARIDO members make space for good design.

Not all top chefs use Gaggenau at home yet. A fact that kept us busy.
Ovens with succinct style. The 200 series ovens. To satisfy the world’s greatest chefs, we meet the very highest standards. The 200 series ovens bring the most modern professional technology into private kitchens, with ovens, Combi-steam ovens and warming drawers that set new standards. Many chefs who have been awarded three Michelin stars are already convinced – they don’t just use the range at home, but also in their restaurants. We take that as a compliment. The difference is Gaggenau. For more information and a list of partners, please telephone +1.877.4 GAGGENAU or visit: www.gaggenau.ca.

BROWN THOMAS LUXURY HALL INTERIOR DESIGNER
Diego Burdi, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Burdifilek DESIGN TEAM
Diego Burdi, ARIDO Tom Yip, ARIDO Jeremy Mendonca, Intern ARIDO “Beautifully crafted details support a cohesive, elegant concept. Sophisticated splendour. This signature 5,800-sq.-ft. space in Dublin, Ireland, references the sophisticated modernism of the Brown Thomas brand and captures the essence of the beautiful products it houses. The design concept focuses on elevating the luxury shopping experience. The Luxury Hall was conceived as a central piazza, with enclaves for high-end brands projecting beyond the main area. The perimeter is sheathed in subtly reflective dichroic glass; invisible floating vitrines are suspended on modulated transparent glass walls, allowing for a glimpse through to the adjacent shop-in-shops. The graceful curves encourage meandering exploration and effortlessly lead shoppers through the space.

Brian Bettencourt, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Watt International DESIGN TEAM
Brian Bettencourt, ARIDO Paulis Ciskevicius, ARIDO Victoria Chin, Intern ARIDO “Exciting, well-organized interior — they pulled out all the stops to create an energetic shopping experience.” The interior designer was challenged with creating an uncluttered, fluid space to house four major sports brands, in this new 9,500-sq.-ft. retail space owned by Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, of Toronto. Spatial manipulation and strategic placement of architectural features and fixtures define and modulate the space, while respecting the functional reality of a retail environment. Concept layers and interesting ceiling, wall and floor features help define the space and provide dynamic sightlines. Hub/ vignette areas create focus, while pulling customers into the centre of the space.

DISCOVER Y, EMPLOYEE CHILDCARE CENTRE INTERIOR DESIGNER
Jane Lawson, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Walker Lawson Interior Design Inc. “This is an imaginative design solution. Playful, clean, sophisticated and fun.” This corporate daycare facility in Calgary reflects a commitment to employees by offering a unique environment for children and their parents. The facility exudes residential warmth. A sense of “home” and “address” for each room inspired a streetscape of oversized building blocks at the entry doors. “Shadow” trees and illuminated birds in flight add a sense of whimsy and “natural” dynamic to the space. Children are quickly drawn in and immediately feel at ease.

Anna Simone, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Cecconi Simone Inc. DESIGN TEAM
Anna Simone, ARIDO Elaine Cecconi, ARIDO Pauline Ayoub, ARIDO “Urban and sophisticated to the core. High-contrast white and dark elements create visual appeal.” The inspiration for this 1,016-sq.-ft. model suite in Ottawa was haute couture. The suite has a clean, contemporary feel with an infusion of transitional elements and a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces. The design strikes a balance between a white, modern backdrop and a dark interior that incorporates solid oak, stamped leather and backlit elements. The warmth of these elements adds a richness and tactile quality to the design.

NADÈGE PATISSERIE INTERIOR DESIGNER
Neal Prabhu, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
nkA “It’s perfect: pastry as jewellery! Nice use of linear elements to draw customers in.” A restrained approach to Nadège Patisserie in Toronto yielded a refined interior of architectural interventions that are at once deferential and engaging. This duality reinforces the dynamic of the space, juxtaposing the intimacy of the pastry display with the intensity of the open kitchen and surrounding social nodes. A floating ceiling running the length of the interior reinforces the long, narrow proportion of the 2,600-sq.-ft. patisserie. The clean lines of the white eating counter, floating wall and shelves stand in contrast to the grey cavernous treatment of the interior’s shell.

PROJECT
LEON’S FURNITURE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE, TORONTO INTERIOR DESIGNER
Danielle J. Leon, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Danielle Josette Interior Design “An impressive, well-conceived marriage of old and new.” This project highlights Toronto’s historic railway roundhouse and showcases the client’s merchandise in a 40,000-sq.-ft. showroom. The design minimizes the built space, while maximizing the historic structure. A large vestibule unites two entrances and guides customers to the centre of the building. The saw cuts on the polished concrete floor and the custom, suspended, metal light troughs are installed in a radial pattern, highlighting the curve of the building. Two wood and glass pavilions imitate the living space of a 700-sq.-ft. condominium.
Award of Merit: Sustainable Design The concept of sustainability in design is something interior design professionals embrace. The Sustainable category of the 2010 ARIDO Awards program recognizes projects that incorporate sustainable solutions with exceptional design. In addition to winning an Award of Merit in the Restoration and Adaptive Reuse category, Leon’s Furniture at the Roundhouse, Toronto, received an Award of Merit: Sustainable Design for its eco-friendly design. Caroline Hughes, ARIDO Christopher Wright, ARIDO Erin Armstrong, ARIDO Jackie Prawecki, Intern ARIDO Angela Stinson, Intern ARIDO “Strong colour used in a clever way. Aesthetic element in power poles breaks up large expanse of space.” The design of this new centre in Mississauga, Ontario, embraces the challenge of 20-ft. ceiling heights by implementing a “21st-century forest” of cable-management power poles to create a highly visual way-finding system. The brand’s blue collector cards were utilized in an oversized “drapery” to create intimate collaboration pods within the open contact centre. The centre is home to Canada’s largest solar rooftop, generating enough energy to power 20 homes for one year. On-site solar generation is returned to the grid, resulting in substantial energy-cost reductions.
Award of Merit: Sustainable Design The concept of sustainability in design is something interior design professionals embrace. The Sustainable category of the 2010 ARIDO Awards program recognizes projects that incorporate sustainable solutions with exceptional design. THE GREEN GRIND INTERIOR DESIGNER
Randa Tukan, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
HOK DESIGN TEAM
Randa Tukan, ARIDO Daniela Barbon, ARIDO “Welcoming, joyful, sustainable. Wonderful juxtaposition of architectural and decorative design on a very strict budget.” The eclectic atmosphere of this hip, grassroots, community coffee shop in Toronto, with a focus on sustainability, is enhanced with vintage furniture and art. Light from large operable windows and neutral-coloured walls visually enlarge this 1,000-sq.-ft. space, providing a backdrop for bright accents and various wood grains. A comfortable seating area is integrated to create a home away from home for patrons to kick back and relax. The coffee-stained concrete floor illustrates the owner’s love of a good brew.
Award of Merit: Sustainable Design The concept of sustainability in design is something interior design professionals embrace. The Sustainable category of the 2010 ARIDO Awards program recognizes projects that incorporate sustainable solutions with exceptional design. CALGARY PENTHOUSE INTERIOR DESIGNER
Andrea Raimondi, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Ingenium Design Group Inc. “An innovative suite layout with exquisite detailing.” The client’s European roots and pioneering nature mandated a dynamically minimalistic yet progressive design for this 3,196-sq.-ft. penthouse in Calgary. Through an uncomplicated, purposeful approach and utilization of a controlled palette, the designer created an austere and polished backdrop to showcase exclusive details, while emphasizing key features with accents of saturated colour.

BMO – NEIGHBOURHOOD BRANCH CONCEPT INTERIOR DESIGNER
Andrew Gallici, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
figure3 DESIGN TEAM
Andrew Gallici, ARIDO Christopher Wright, ARIDO Kate Jordan, Intern ARIDO “Impressive workplace strategies create a clean, bright, efficient layout.” This 2,100-sq.-ft. branch model in Toronto is designed to expand BMO’s presence in urban neighbourhoods. Their goal was to better support changing customer needs, while significantly reducing their real-estate footprint and operating costs. Physical and psychological barriers were removed by opening up the space, creating glass meeting rooms and offices, and deconstructing teller stations. The space plan was developed to intentionally blur the lines between self-service transactions and one-on-one engagement.

CONESTOGA MALL INTERIOR DESIGNER
Dana David, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Pellow + Associates Architects Inc. “Well-executed update resulting in a remarkable modernization.” This design project added more than 100,000-sq.-ft. to an existing mall in Waterloo, Ontario, originally built in the 1970s. The renovated and new common areas were designed to be sophisticated and contemporary, yet neutral enough to allow the retail tenants to remain “the show.” The style is flexible enough to last another 15 to 20 years. The food court, relocated nearer the existing cinemas, acts as a new mall anchor and entrance, with its own unique environment.

MCDONNELL HAYNES ADVERTISING & DESIGN LTD. INTERIOR DESIGNER
Pat Cooper-Slipper, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Cooper-Slipper Design Inc. DESIGN TEAM
Pat Cooper-Slipper, ARIDO Jane Juranek, Intern ARIDO “Impressive, given the limited budget. Sophisticated, but with a youthful and energetic vibe.” The design of this space supports the client’s dramatic shift in workplace philosophy and a rebranding opportunity. The Toronto firm’s overhead expenses were reduced significantly with the move from a 17,000- to 7,400-sq.-ft. space, allowing for a more collaborative environment. The space was manipulated by creating simple blocks of build outs, allowing the flood of natural light into all areas. The end result is an open, creative and collaborative workspace.

INTERAC ASSOCIATION INTERIOR DESIGNER
Chantal Frenette, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
modo “Great use of colour and graphics to provide transition from private to semi-private spaces.” The client sought to reflect a new brand strategy and create a healthy, modern, highly collaborative work environment. The design team used the architecture of the building, located in the financial district of Toronto, to enhance the interiors. The space capitalizes on natural light from full-height windows and spatial niches created by the distinctive saw-tooth design of the building perimeter. Glass fins incorporated in the partitions purposefully reinforce the building footprint and create a dynamic repetition to the regimented planning strategy.

Johnson Chou Inc. “A ‘fantastic’ futuristic workplace that allows for change and supports evolving ideas.” This space, located on Queen Street West in Toronto, is intended to function as a forum for the exchange of ideas — an inspirational hub where knowledge is gained and disseminated and the participants are transformed through the experience. Cecconi Simone Inc. DESIGN TEAM
Anna Simone, ARIDO Elaine Cecconi, ARIDO Marie Girolamo, Intern ARIDO Pauline Ayoub, ARIDO “Edgy, fresh reinterpretation of ’80s glam and avant-garde fashion. Sophisticated detail; perfectly suited to target market.” This 3,462-sq.-ft. sales centre in Toronto caters to a demographic of hip, fashion-forward urbanites who are leaders, not followers. The existing raw elements of the space, such as surface imperfections and exposed ductwork and conduit, are featured rather than concealed. New materials and furnishings were charred to create a heavily textured surface and found objects were introduced for an eclectic appeal.

RICHMOND OLYMPIC OVAL INTERIOR DESIGNER
Don Parker, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Cannon Design DESIGN TEAM
Don Parker, ARIDO Patricia Roy, ARIDO “Beautiful patterning of pine-beetlekilled wood on ceiling provides a great solution to the client’s requirement to salvage discarded material.” This vast, 506,000-sq.-ft. structure, located in Richmond, B.C., is designed around three levels. The project had multiple accessibility requirements as it is designed to transition between a speed-skating facility and an international, elite-athlete training zone, as well as a neighbourhood recreation centre and rehabilitation centre for the elderly. The interior design identifies a hierarchy of finishes, from simple concrete seal and burnished concrete block to back-lit polycarbonate, appropriate to the function and status of the program element they serve. LYNDHURST INTERIOR DESIGNER
Theresa Casey, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM
Casey Design Group Inc. “Exudes personality and life while being true to the intent. Each room has a strong character, yet the overall design is cohesive.” This project involved restoring the spirit of a historic Edwardian home in Toronto severely compromised by years of ill-advised renovations and neglect. The repurposed Edwardian framework dictated highly articulated rooms revolving around generous hallway spaces, resulting in a series of engaging and meaningful places for both private reflection and family gatherings. The use of traditional materials and original craftsmanship bridge the demands of modern functionality with historic restoration.
