A Town & Country Luxury Fireplace is more than just a hearth: it’s a design centerpiece. Our fireplaces create individual design signatures, adding flair, ambiance and long-term value to any home. Our Design – A – Fire feature allows your clients to select burners and panels that reflect their personal style, and our unmatched venting options work around open spaces, structural beams and other unique features — meaning that a Town & Country Luxury Fireplace can be located almost anywhere within a building envelope.

From across North America and abroad, including projects located in Paris, France; Washington, D.C.; and Calgary, Alberta, the 2011 ARIDO award-winning projects are a true visual showcase of international design excellence. This year, a panel of five judges selected 27 projects to receive awards from nearly 100 entries in 11 categories. Among the winning projects were 18 Awards of Merit, including two Sustainable Awards of Merit; 10 Awards of Excellence; and one Project of the Year. Each project was judged on its own merit – taking into consideration the creativity, innovation and effectiveness of the applied design solutions – by the five judges, including four members of the design profession and one guest judge from the world of print media, a real estate and business writer with The Globe and Mail. The award-winning projects represent how ARIDO members “Make Space for Good Design.” From corporate to residential, hospitality to healthcare, the 2011 ARIDO award-winning projects demonstrate how interior design can enhance public and private spaces. George Yabu, Fellow, ARIDO Glenn Pushelberg, Fellow, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM

Yabu Pushelberg “Refined and elegant, whimsical and joyful. Makes for a profoundly enjoyable shopping spree!” The international flare of this unconventional retail landmark in Paris, France, unites the elegant sophistication of Parisian traditions, with a modern and energetic high-end shopping experience. The design team pushed the boundaries on the notion of what a department store should be. Fine finishes in each of Printemps’ unique and identifiable “rooms,” with walls made of metal frames for transparency, are carefully crafted to evoke a residential ambience, much like the spaces of a large mansion. The impressive volume of the atrium creates an opening that visually connects all three floors from the core of the building. The addition of an open and semi-transparent promenade space entices shoppers. Meticulously chosen carpets, printed wallpaper, and fun and quirky fixtures further add to the residential feel.

B + H Architects “A quantum shift for a well-established law firm. The graphic representation of a law library, creates a unique space for arrival and meeting.” A fresh and modern approach combined with sophisticated, traditional materials is reflective of the unique qualities that have vaulted Heenan Blaikie to the top of the legal world. The client’s new, 24,412-square-foot office, located in Calgary, reflects both its long-established position and reputation as an innovative and forward-thinking law firm. The reception area opens to a row of glass panels that pivot, dissecting the space into a series of multi-purpose configurations – transforming the firm’s principal common area from a boardroom into a lecture hall, a reception venue, or into sections for individual study or small gatherings. Heenan Blaikie’s balance of tradition and experience is perfectly captured in the area’s glass partitions, which feature a digital array of monochrome legal volumes pictured with a photograph by one of the firm’s partners.

An inspiring place to work.” Located at Toronto’s east waterfront, Corus Entertainment’s 500,000-square-foot media headquarters reimagines the workplace. Driven by innovation, creativity and collaboration, the interiors reinforce the Corus brand with features like a playful adult-sized slide in the sun-filled atrium. The client’s objective was to amalgamate more than 70 brands, 11 facilities, 1,100 employees, three television studios and three radio stations into this singular, cuttingedge facility. Gone are the days of the typical “black box” broadcast studio. Corus’s diverse portfolio of colour, lighting, flexible furnishings, graphics and views to the exterior revolutionize industry standards and catapult the brand light years ahead.

Diego Burdi, ARIDO Jeremy Mendonca, Intern ARIDO “This is a total brand experience that allows the customer to easily focus on the product.” With the official launch of its newest device at a Las Vegas Electronics trade show, Blackberry required a booth design that would not only provide a launching platform for its product, but also make a strong brand statement and stand out amongst the competition. The 6,500-square-foot exhibit space was compartmentalized into distinct product galleries, a presentation stage, demo zones and meeting rooms, inspired by the Blackberry “data flow.” The result is large-scale, curvaceous forms that promote a sense of discovery and draw passersby into the space. The exterior stretched fabric skin of three pods housing meeting rooms become oversized brand canvasses. Strategically placed halos illuminate product offerings from within the display niches, enticing visitors; these are visible even when the booth is full.

Diego Burdi, ARIDO Merrill Fung, ARIDO Jeremy Mendonca, Intern ARIDO “This space is more about luxurious aspirations than the sale of a building.” Distinguished by a timeless sense of style and elegance, the Exhibit Residences’ Presentation Lounge captures the sophisticated sensibility of the building’s architecture, set amongst one of Toronto’s most prestigious shopping districts. Upon entry, visitors are greeted with a white Corian-topped cantilevered desk, drawing guests through to the core of the space, where an architectural model of the development takes centre stage. Subtle tone-on-tone grey-blues, smoke, taupe and charcoal define the space’s handsome authority. Open sightlines sweep guests through to the kitchen, bath and living room vignettes at the rear of the presentation lounge.

Burdifilek “Quiet yet urbane; an assured palette of luxury that drives home the branded concept to a desired target market.” Designed to appeal to the urban sophisticate, the concept behind the Thompson Residences Sales Centre explores a unique aesthetic language, challenging the traditional look and feel of a condo sales centre. Carefully considered details maximize impact and fully communicate the branded lifestyle within this 3,200-square-foot space, housed in an unconventional temporary tent. The sleek, reflective black facade, smoked lavender circular glass entry, muted custom furnishings and suspended wire art installations help curate the experience, invoking a hotel lobby feel. The true measure of the project’s success was in the sales: more than 50 per cent sold out post-launch.

Following a devastating viral outbreak in 2010, the new 7,000 square-foot interior specifically addressed the health and safety of the animals and humans who occupy it. Perimeter rooms showcase the animals and enhanced ceiling-hung signage delineates spaces and encourages interaction with potential adoptees. Stephen R. Pile Architect Inc. “Dramatic and lofty feel. Spatial flow and use of local artists create a memorable space.” The restaurant’s name, Aria, coupled with the client’s passion for Italian food and contemporary design, served as the inspiration to create this 3,500-square-foot artistic experience for patrons. Aria, meaning “air” in Italian but also associated with opera, embodies the space through its lightness at lunch and dramatic stage for dining at night. Soaring 30-foot ceilings showcase the artist commissioned artwork that floats throughout the space as modern interpretations of grand opera chandeliers. A floor-to-ceiling wine cellar shows off the extensive collection. Attention to detail, play of light on hand-blown glasses, simple, purposeful lines and fabric textures encourage touching, dreaming and imagination, reflecting the essence and integrity of the food.

Margit Hefele, ARIDO Marlene Makowka, ARIDO Grant Boccongelle, ARIDO Jaime Pyle, Intern ARIDO “Excellent maintenance of the historic characteristics; elegant detailing and choice of colours.” “Cherish the past, embrace the future,” was the client’s vision for the James Cooper Mansion. This 7,000-square-foot, 19th-century heritage house was repurposed into a multi-functional amenity centre for a new residential development. To facilitate excavation, the 800-ton mansion was physically lifted and moved. Echoes of beautifully preserved historical integrity adorn the mansion. Custom wrought iron and glass screens inspired by period motifs, door hardware from another era, vintage sprinkler systems, restored chandeliers and sconces, and wood corbels and cornices return the home’s Victorian splendor. Contemporary touches in new finishes and furnishings create a comfortable openness tailored for modern, 21st-century living.

Great use of light and translucent materials.” This 225,000-square-foot office environment in Calgary was designed as a tool to attract and retain the best talent in the industry. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows and the use of a walnut, striated limestone, leather and onyx palette create a blur between the interior and exterior spaces. Powell & Bonnell “A well-assembled, modern living experience that acknowledges the home’s past architectural achievements.” The renovation of this stately, 1855 Georgian historical home, built in Oakville, Ontario, 156 years ago, has been turned into a home for a bustling young family. It is an excellent example of design that acknowledges the integrity of the home’s past lives, while exuding a relaxed, modern atmosphere. Neutral colour tones, the enhancement of architectural period details and the utilization of the existing kitchen envelope maintain the home’s historical significance. At the same time, the integration of a mudroom, creating a much-needed secondary entrance and storage, brings spacious modernity to the home.

Elegance to everyday family living – a perfectly put together pied-à-terre.” The client’s desire for a gracious and well-proportioned home for living and entertaining transformed this poorly renovated 1980s north Toronto home back to its classic state. Through a reconfiguration of existing rooms, increasing the home’s square-footage and reassigning rooms to take advantage of natural light, the designer created an open, well-conceptualized space plan that enhances its functionality for the modern family that occupies it. Harpreet Singh, ARIDO Rochelle Jones, ARIDO Steve Cascone, ARIDO Meaghan Simpson, Intern ARIDO “Fresh, bright and exciting workplace that also functions as a successful backdrop for on-air business and financial news in Canada.” The client’s move into a smaller, 11,000-square-foot space serves as “command central” for Canada’s only business and financial news network. The BNN’s new station is nearly half the size of its former location, yet houses 109 staff, seven editing bays, private offices, workstations, meeting rooms, green rooms, a make-up and hair room for on-air staff, and three studio spaces. The clever use of materials creates visual separation while maintaining a flexible and open concept for connectivity.

HURON PERTH HEALTHCARE ALLIANCE – STRATFORD HOSPITAL SITE INTERIOR DESIGNER

Judy Newcombe, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM

Newcombe Design Associates Inc. DESIGN TEAM

Judy Newcombe, ARIDO Carolyn Seagrave, ARIDO Lisa Walkden, ARIDO “The design’s gentle, nurturing palette alleviates what is typically a stressful experience, creating a soothing environment.” The antithesis of a sterile, white hospital, the design inspiration for this 78,000-square-foot redevelopment was based on creating an extension of the lush, rural southwestern Ontario landscape. Whimsical floor features, of a meandering river with fish, draw patients and family members towards the aquarium and nursing station. Photos of the hospital’s history and of the surrounding landscape line the corridors and acknowledge the farming community the hospital serves. Warm, bright colours and floor patterns act as visual cues to guide patients and staff. 46 l ARIDO Awards 2011

STUDIO SALES OFFICE & MODEL SUITE INTERIOR DESIGNER

Mike Niven, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM

Mike Niven Interior Design Inc. “Energetic and exciting design elements speak to their target market. References of art and design are omnipresent in this full-scale model suite and presentation centre for an urban condo development. Over-sized custom string-art walls, created by a former OCAD University student, showcases the work of current students. A white backdrop with shots of vibrant colour and art leads guests into cocoon seating vignettes that open into one another. The great volume of space allows the ceiling and walls to melt away.

Reich + Petch Design International DESIGN TEAM

Fang-Pin Lee, ARIDO Cathy Misiaszek, ARIDO Bridget Brown, ARIDO “The success of the project lies in the intense relationship between design and the emotive qualities the displays evoke.” Archeological, interactive and sensory experiences transport visitors of the Smithsonian through an emotive journey that artfully displays the scientific evidence of human evolution. Visitors encounter life-size sculptures of ancient ancestors, sweeping display walls, time travel portals, interactive media rooms and fossils, displayed among the rich colours and textured layers found at archeological sites. The designers worked with museum staff and scientists to create a memorable gallery where science is balanced with storytelling and is adaptable to exhibit future scientific discoveries.

AUTOSTRADA INTERIOR DESIGNER

Dan Menchions, ARIDO Keith Rushbrook, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM

II BY IV Design Associates Inc. DESIGN TEAM

Dan Menchions, ARIDO Keith Rushbrook, ARIDO Paolo Ferrari, Intern ARIDO “Great use of space; amazing details play on the highway theme.” The client’s Italian roots were the inspiration for the interior of this 6,300-square-foot multi-level restaurant. Drawing on elements of an Italian highway, or Autostrada. A leatherfinished marble host desk and three-dimensional lacquered wall installation of a Pirelli tire tread are significant branding elements. The sunken dining area is encircled by a laser-cut custom screen of inverted trapezoids, the symbol for highway on Italian road signs. The Pizza Bar includes market-style charcuterie, where finely cured deli meats hang on full display next to a ceiling-height woodpile that fuels the pizza oven. um_cdnint_1/2pg_FA:Layout 1

ENOTECA MOTORINO INTERIOR DESIGNER

Renato Iamonaco, ARIDO DESIGN FIRM

Sector Designs “It’s young, fresh and modern. A refined colour palette anchors the space.” This project highlights mid-century and contemporary references of Italian culture: the love of good food and wine, La Dolce Vita, and the excitement and speed of the iconic scooter or motorino. The 3,700-square-foot space is energetic and lively, where guests can connect to Italian traditions and watch the action-packed preparation of their pizza. The showpiece oven is the driving force of the restaurant – on the main axis and flanked by two slightly raised seating areas. Black-and-white stills from Italian films convey the fun and glamour of the motorino; a current model greets patrons at the host station. Rustic, refined millwork emphasizes Italian wines and chairs reflect scooter colours. Logo and bar codes on tabletops reference scooter packing crates.
