Welding and Repair
Automotive parts recyclers have come a long way in the last few years. What’s more, they can and should be a major partner in your business. In this issue, Bodyshop Magazine takes a look at parts recycling today, and gives you more than a few names to call in our new annual listing.
I-CAR updates the repair procedures on two popular GM models. Both involve using some new equipment and a few new techniques designed to reduce the heat on some of the milder steel. Make sure you’re up to speed.

Bodyshop Canada’s magazine for collision repair professionals since 1970
viewpoint
Introductions all ’round As the newly minted editor of Bodyshop Magazine, let me first express how excited I am to be jumping into this business at such an important time for both the industry and this publication. About a year ago, the former editor, Cindy Macdonald, and the team here at the magazine started quarterbacking a significant change for the publication, by getting back to our roots and providing you, our valued readers, with the real, topical and current information you need to remain successful. Today, I’m committed to staying that course, and committed to providing you with something interesting, unique and above all, helpful in each and every article. While on occasion that might mean a few less glossy corporate profiles found within these pages, I think the space is better spent on keeping you up to speed on issues like evolving governmental regulations, introducing you to time-saving and profit-protecting technologies, or simply sharing some best practices gleaned from sources across the continent. With this in mind, this issue features a comprehensive list of Canada’s top automotive recyclers, some of whom should probably have a place on your speed-dial. While no one would argue that an obviously less profitable alternative should be your first, go-to solution, there is also no denying that when a vehicle starts inching closer to that total loss number, a reliable recycler can go from being merely a listing in this magazine to your most important business partner. What’s more, the global economic crisis has hit the insurance industry hard. For evidence of that, one needn’t look further than embattled AIG south of the border. When the dust settles, it would be foolhardy to believe that the major insurance providers will continue to play the claims game exactly the same way they have in the past. In fact, in the opinion of many, insurance companies are bound to be doing
some serious pencil-sharpening, and in the collision business, that could mean taking a look at which shops are total loss vehicle factories, and which ones have a robust history of holding onto and repairing some of those vehicles when determining their designations. Of course, those arguments don’t even begin to take into account the growing consumer interest in “green” (or “greener”) solutions. Speaking of going green, this issue also features an article that I think will open some eyes to the possibilities of local, grassroots marketing, something we can all afford to do a little more of. If your shop has recently converted to waterborne technology, you have a fantastic opportunity to market yourself as an industry and community leader, but so far, few shops have bothered to tell anyone about their shift. As you’ll find in the article, not doing so is a massive waste of not only public relations and goodwill potential, but some remarkable sales opportunities. So, with my introduction out of the way, and this issue of Bodyshop Magazine complete, I sincerely hope you’ll take the time to introduce yourselves over the next few months. One of the great things about our modern media world is that it is no longer a one-way dialogue, and I’m looking forward to the conversation. B J.D. Ney jdney@bodyshopbiz.com

Penske Green Flags Waterborne
P
PG Automotive Refinish has announced it is assisting Penske Racing in converting its racecar painting facility in Mooresville, N.C., to the environmentally friendly PPG Envirobase High Performance waterborne coatings system. The conversion began with the painting of the No. 2 Miller Lite and No. 77 Mobil 1 Penske Racing Dodge Chargers, which made their debut at the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. PPG waterborne coatings specialist Jim Skal has been working with Penske Racing staff on the conversion process. The switch to Envirobase High Performance is part of Penske Racing’s ongoing initiative to “green” business practices. “Going green with a company that has a history of product leadership and innovation is the difference when making such a change,” said Roger Penske. “We are proud to have such a great working relationship with the entire PPG organization throughout our racing disciplines and with our automotive and truck leasing businesses.” PPG has shared a business relationship with Penske Racing for almost 30 years. The partnership dates back to PPG’s involvement in automobile racing and sponsorship of the PPG Cup from 1979 to 1999. Over the years, PPG has become Penske Corporation’s largest supplier of refinish coatings for its racing, truck leasing, and collision repair divisions.

The waterborne transition attracted a celebrity student in March. I-CAR welcomed celebrity car builder Rich Evans to its Waterborne Products, Systems, and Application

Fix Auto has announced that Steve Leal has acquired the rights to expand the Fix Auto network into the Atlantic provinces. “We are very pleased with this expansion as it allows for the Fix Auto network to be present from coast to coast in Canada,” says Fix Auto Ontario and Fix Auto Atlantic Canada president Steve Leal. “Our goal is not only to be the largest network but to offer complete coverage for our partners while continuing to focus on being the complete solution for body shops.” In October 2008, Fix Auto Atlantic Canada signed its first shop in Prince Edward Island—Fix Auto Central PEI. “They have completely integrated into the Fix Auto network, including the full Fix Auto brand and our exclusive Web-CMS technology,” says Mike Kaplaniak, director of operations.
one of the best features of the program is the focus on technique as well as safety. “To effectively apply waterborne material the technique needs to be a little different than when applying solvent-borne material,” said Evans,

Canadian Right to Repair Bill Gets a Boost
T
The Right to Repair Bill is gaining momentum with growing support from federal politicians, an industry-driven grassroots campaign, and a real chance to go to a vote. Bill C-273, a private member’s bill, is designed to provide access to specialized tools and information required for automotive repairs. While more than half of vehicle manufacturers do allow independent repair businesses in Canada access, more than 40% do not. This is in stark contrast to the U.S., where the independent sector enjoys access through a voluntary agreement with vehicle manufacturers. Kicking off the campaign for support in Ottawa, Ont., bill sponsor MP Brian Masse hosted a news conference with Automotive Industries Association of Canada president Marc Brazeau, Retail Council of Canada vice-president of federal government relations Terrance Oakey, and several representatives of the automotive service provider community. “The bill is affectionately known as the ‘Right to Repair Bill,’ and deals with original equipment manufacturers and onboard diagnostic capabilities that are preventing some of the medium and small businesses across this country from being able to service vehicles appropriately,” said Masse. “As well as a competition issue, it is an environmental issue, as we see vehicles not receiving the service that they need right away.” Masse said that the bill addresses the needs of the consumer and service and repair businesses, but also protects the rights of those who have produced the vehicle systems in question. “It has an approach that protects intellectual property,” he said. “It provides for a reimbursement whose work has been featured on Speed Channel’s Chop Cut Rebuild. “Waterborne needs to be applied in several coats, requiring more overlap than when applying solvents. As a car builder and refinisher, I use various application techniques every day, but not everyone in the collision repair industry is as knowledgeable in this area.” Evans said he also appreciated the spotlight on safety, focusing on the necessity of a fresh air system, the use of latex gloves so that chemicals are not absorbed into the skin, and more. “To me training is another tool for the toolbox; the better trained I am the faster and better I work,” said Evans. “Keeping in tune with what’s new in the industry helps me to make money as well as save money.”
to the actual manufacturers, and it provides a steady stream of rules that we can engage in to make sure that businesses compete with open and fair practices.” “A vehicle today is basically a computer on wheels,” said AIA president Marc Brazeau. “To properly diagnose a problem, you have to plug into the onboard diagnostic computer. That is the crux of the problem. We don’t have access to that to the extent that the dealers do, and that puts the aftermarket at a disadvantage. The Drive Clean program in Ontario, the people who run that program, should be concerned. It could lead to fewer Drive Clean facilities on the aftermarket side. And that would create a problem in terms of access to that service. “Of the vehicle fleet, a large percentage is affected today”—nearly 60% of the 18.4 million vehicles on the road—”but as the vehicle fleet ages, and those newer vehicles leave the warranty period, the problem is only going to get worse,” said Brazeau.
How to Act on Right to Repair The Right to Repair website has a Web tool which allows members of the aftermarket to voice their concerns about Right to Repair to their Member of Parliament. Visit www.righttorepair.ca.

Trade Certification Coming to Nova Scotia
Compulsory certification for the collision repair trade is nearly a reality in Nova Scotia, reports Lindsay Gates of the Collision Repair Association of Nova Scotia. According to Gates, the final regulation is now before the Minister of Labour and Workforce Development, who will present the regulation to cabinet for approval. This follows its passage through several committees to ensure the coming regulation has undergone proper review. In the meantime, the province’s Apprenticeship Department has already been working to contact technicians who have been working in the collision industry for many
years without certification. To assist these technicians in preparation for writing the exam, the Apprenticeship division is offering refresher sessions to help apprentices upgrade their knowledge and skills. These sessions are to help the technician read and understand the terminology used in the testing. The success rate for those writing the exam to date has been in the 95% range. Those who were not successful are being helped with upgrading their weaker skills and they will rewrite at a later date. Still, there are many technicians who have not yet applied for the upgrading, or to write the certification exam. They are being urged to take advantage of the programs being offered, as the upgrading courses and certificawww.bodyshopbiz.com l April 2009 l Bodyshop

CCC Information Services Inc., of Chicago and Mitchell International, Inc., of San Diego recently announced that they will no longer pursue the merger of the two companies. “In light of the court’s decision, we have jointly decided to terminate the merger. A year ago when we announced the transaction, our stated objective was to deliver greater innovation to our customers and partners. This theme has remained a constant and will continue to be at the forefront of our efforts,” says Githesh Ramamurthy, chairman and CEO of CCC.

Letters to the Editor Dear editor:
I wanted to write to you today regarding the recession I keep reading and hearing about. I am by no means an expert on giving advice or how [people] should run their business or finances. But it seems to me it does not matter if there is a recession or not! It should have no bearing on your business or your ability to generate work. We are doing what we always do and it is working. We hustle, we network, and we talk to business owners in similar businesses like us to generate work. We do not turn work away unless it is not profitable. Collision, customer pay, fleet, whatever, it gets taken on if it can be done and make a profit. Yes, some jobs are more desirable than others, but at the end of the day as long as there is profit we do our best to accommodate the consumer’s needs. My opinion is you write your own paycheque, and if you want to be successful then diversify. Staff your shop with employees that have a good range of skills and can produce quality work in a reasonable time frame for a fair price. Get creative, bust out of your routine, and pound the pavement. Don’t let the economy get the best of you. Sincerely, Robert Dumais Streamline Collision Repair, Barrie, ON

recyclers list
Who’s Your
RECYCLER? Welcome to the 2009 Bodyshop Magazine Automotive Recyclers List. What you’ll find in the pages that follow is a comprehensive listing of Canada’s automotive recycling community from coast to coast. More importantly though, somewhere in this list could very well be the next vital partner in your business. As Automotive Recyclers Association managing director Steve Fletcher, says, when it comes to the shop/recycler dynamic it should be professional and mutually beneficial. “We advocate establishing a close, professional relationship with your recycler,” he says. What’s more, Fletcher says there are some other models for the repairer-recycler relationship that might be attractive on the surface based on cost, but that might fall short in the end. “There are some tempting models based on online ordering, or low-cost phone relationships,” he says. In the end, though, as with many business relationships, it always tends to come down to personal relationships. “You have to rely on your recycler as a partner in your business,” he notes. “We try and bring the two together, by having our recyclers go out and visit shops, and by bringing some shops out to meet with recyclers, so they can get a better idea of what those businesses are all about.” And what are these businesses all about? Well, according to Fletcher, the recycling industry, if utilized properly by collision shops, could have a serious impact on which cars are repaired, and which are hauled out of your bays with nary a profit. “The big picture for repairers is overall profitability,” he says. “However, often when it comes to utilizing a recycler, the profit picture can be counterintuitive.” According to Fletcher, some collision shop managers see the profitability picture of the recycling industry as troublesome. To summarize the argument, many owners shun the idea of billing for a recycled part—often as little as 50% of the
10 Bodyshop l April 2009 l www.bodyshopbiz.com
cost of a new part—because of its obvious margin ramifications. However, Fletcher says those who think that way are often missing the point. “Yes, you’re making less, in terms of the short-term economic perspective,” he says. “But it gets interesting when the insurance companies are trying to decide whether this vehicle will get pulled or not.” According to Fletcher, insurance companies operate based on an equation of about 75% of actual vehicle cost, and when the repair bill gets closer to that magic number, the potential of zero repairs getting done—in favour of scrap auctions—get progressively more real. “The more you can substitute new parts for recycled ones, the more you can chip away and save yourself some total-loss vehicles.” Clearly, doing work on a vehicle based on slightly lower profit margins is better for business than having the vehicle pulled from the bay, and that’s where the importance of a solid working relationship with a reputable recycler becomes vital. So, with that in mind, have a look over the next few pages, and perhaps even make a few calls. Not only is there a serious and growing green argument you can present to your customers concerning the use of recycled parts, but as has been mentioned, a close recycler relationship might just allow you to keep more repair customers, period. Top shops know going green is easy; better shops know how to talk about it By J.D. Ney

cross the country, members of the collision industry are evalu evalu-ating their individual environmental footprints and coming up with solutions to “green” their respective businesses. Whether it’s a waterborne conversion or the formalizing of your hazardous material disposal practices, the collision industry is on its way to being more environmentally friendly. The news media is flooded on a daily basis with stories about massive global corporations cutting their carbon footprint by 10%, but if you’re a shop owner who’s switched to waterborne, you’ve likely just
cover
cut your greenhouse gas emissions by 75 to 90%—so why isn’t your story being told? Unfortunately, in too many cases, the answer seems to be: because you’re not telling it. For some reason, the broad concept of marketing seems to be a dirty word to many at the individual shop level. Whether it’s a case of fear of the unknown, intimidation, or a slew of other issues, shops that have made positive environmental steps have, up until now, frankly done a poor job of telling anybody in their surrounding area about the significance of their efforts, particularly as concerning the adoption of waterborne paints. “[Waterborne] is the bestkept secret around,” says John Norris, executive director of ciia.com. “So few shops seem to be enthused by the potential, and they should be out talking to everybody about it.” With the waterborne issue in particular, shops have an opportunity, albeit a time-sensitive one, to get a very positive message out to their local community. But, according to marketing veteran John Nelligan, the door is closing for those who are slow to react. Because the industry will eventually be forced through legislation to adopt waterborne universally, there is no story to tell from a public relations perspective if you wait that long. However, if you can be seen as ahead of the curve, or to be switching because “it’s the right thing to do,” then you have a compelling story that needs to be shared. “It’s always best to be out front of any major change,” says Nelligan. “There is a message around that, and if you’re able to talk about it, then you need to be,” he says. What’s more, Nelligan says the “green” angle today can be seen as a huge point of differentiation, because there will be competitors in your area that continue to be mum on the topic (at least in the eyes and ears of the public). “It can be hard to market, but that’s where you can take advantage. If you establish your image as a green business, that accredits you, and you can latch onto that,” he says. While Nelligan is quite apt in pointing out that marketing can be hard, at least on the scale of a massive campaign, Norris says the really big-picture stuff isn’t what’s important. “Marketing can be much simpler than that,” he says. “There is no need to be expensive or exotic.” Norris says it’s not necessarily the message that’s important, but rather the spirit thereof. “Some people won’t remember the specifics, but they’ll remember that you are good guys, involved in the community,” he says. “It allows you to be clearly perceived as being better, nicer guys.” That’s exactly what Kim Roberts, insurance and customer relations manager with Fix-Auto Barrie North, hoped would be the result when her shop made the switch to waterborne in 2007. Certainly, being that far ahead of any poten-
tial legislation gave Roberts an important jump on the competition, and she is the first to acknowledge it. “We reaped all of the benefits of that decision,” she says. “The paint rep was able to spend lots of time here to train, and we were able to separate ourselves from other shops. It was a huge competitive advantage.” However, according to Roberts, it was the good-guy image, engendered by first adopting and then heavily marketing the transition, that was really the key to the shop’s success. “It’s all about the personal selling aspect of the business,” she says. “People want to do business with people they like.” The absolute definition of the grassroots-style campaign, Roberts’ marketing style was far from intimidating or expensive. “We made a bunch of green T-shirts and handed them out to everyone we could,” she says. “We gave them out to customers, to brokers, to the mayor, to anyone we could. It opened up a conversation with everyone about what we were doing and why we were doing it, and let us tell our story.” Roberts parlayed that growing conversation into local radio spots that focused on the environmental consciousness of their business, and even entered her shop into local competitions like the Barrie Chamber of Commerce Bell Canada Business Awards. “We were entered in the awards as a company that was taking a green initiative,” says Roberts. And, when the list of finalists was announced, she says she was thrilled to find her shop among them. “That awards ceremony provided us with at least six months of free advertising,” she says. “In the end, we didn’t win the award, but we still marketed the hell out of it.” With just these examples, Roberts’ initiative seems particularly commendable, and even more impressive from a pure marketing perspective. By being early adopters of a given technology and actually talking about it, they were able to market themselves as community leaders, at the vanguard of environmental consciousness, and all-around good guys of the collision industry. And they were able to do all of that merely by signing on early to a soon-to-be mandatory program: something everybody knew they were all going to have to do eventually. In short, Roberts recognized the opportunity to tell a unique story, and translated her guerilla marketing into a 25% sales increase by the end of 2008. “You have to seek out your own opportunities,” she says. “No one is going to walk in your door and offer them.” As seen in the Fix-Auto Barrie North case study, an untold story does no one any good, while a good story, well told, can have brilliant results. Further, as Nelligan points out, the green movement presents a unique opportunity. “If you have a story to tell, you actually have to tell it, but if you www.bodyshopbiz.com l April 2009 l Bodyshop 21
cover
can associate your shop with the green revolution, you can leverage that power. Customers will recognize it, and that builds brand strength.” Roberts sees the solution in much the same way. “You really should be blasting your own horn,” she recently told a crowded room at the CCIF conference, “whether it is in regards to your mission for environmental friendliness, or whatever your competitive difference may be. No one will know unless you tell them.” Given the remarkable results—a 25% sales increase—it begs the question: not just whether or not you should tell your story, but what kind of story do you want to tell? B
More to Being Green There are plenty of other ways the collision shop can reduce its eco-footprint. What’s more, once you advertise yourself as the green alternative in your community, there is an added imperative. As John Norris, executive director of ciia.com, notes: “If you start advertising how green you are, and you’re not actually in compliance, or a Ministry of the Environment assessment finds paint around your sewer, that’s not going to be good for your business.” One way you can reduce your exposure to that sort of regulatory difficulty is ensuring you are handling your hazardous waste in an environmentally and socially responsible way. According to I-CAR, there is a simple checklist the shop can run through when trying to decide on a hazardous materials policy. If you are opting for an outside agency: • Ask for references from other businesses, trade associations, and environmental agencies. • Ask for credentials, like an identification number. • Check for expiration dates on proof of insurance and necessary permits. • Confirm that all required licenses are current. If you choose to handle the disposal of your own hazardous materials, ensure you check off the following: • Check local or federal regulations. • Obtain a transporter identification number. • Follow all packaging and labelling requirements. • Notify the proper authorities should a spill occur. • Be financially responsible for any spill that does occur.

i-car welding & repair update
New Procedures Announced for
Two GM Models The procedure for replacing the upper tie bar on the Chevrolet HHR has recently been updated, and it closely matches the procedural changes announced last year for the Cobalt. In both cases, the manufacturer suggests some different welding techniques designed to apply less heat to milder steel components, and they both suggest the use of some different equipment. Below, you’ll find an in-depth look at the new welding and repair procedures for the HHR, as well as a quick reminder about the new equipment needs for the Cobalt. HHR
The most significant aspect of this change is the instructions for cutting and repositioning a front upper rail to allow the replacement upper tie bar to fit between the upper rails when installing. Before this update, further disassembly had to be done to allow enough
1
room for the installation of the new part. The updated procedure also identifies four siliconbronze welds located on the upper rails that require replacement. At this time, the updated information is only on the GM pay site: www. acdelcotds.com, and not the free site: www. goodwrench.com/gmgoodwrenchjsp/gmspo. The upper tie bar replacement procedure required updating because both front upper rails pitch inward, toward the centre of the vehicle, and sleeve over the upper tie bar ends. The ends of the upper tie bar pitch outward, conforming to the angle of the rails (see Figure1). According to GM, this design of the front structure means that the space between the front upper rails is shorter than the length of the upper tie bar. A replacement upper tie bar will not fit between the two rails during installation without further disassembly.
Updated Procedure
The updated procedure for the HHR tie bar recommends cutting and repositioning the end of an upper rail to allow a replacement upper tie bar to fit between the two rails. The following is a brief overview to highlight certain aspects of the updated procedure. It does not include every step, such as measuring vehicle dimensions, preparing the replacement part, or applying corrosion protection. To begin, all of the welds connecting the
2
damaged upper tie bar assembly to the vehicle are removed (see Figure 2). This includes removing two slot-shaped silicon-bronze welds located on the topside of each upper rail (see Figure 3). Since the damaged upper tie bar is going to be replaced, it can be cut to allow for removal. Before the replacement upper tie bar can be installed, one of the upper rails has to be cut and repositioned to allow for installation of the new part. This is done by scribing a cut line, on the top side of the upper rail, 50 mm rearward from the front end of the rail (see Figure 4). After making the cut, the top portion of the rail is bent upward and outward (see Figure 5). The replacement tie bar is then fit between the two rails. After the replacement upper tie bar has been properly positioned on the vehicle, it is clamped into place, and the bent portion of the upper rail is returned to the original shape (see Figure 6). The cut on the upper rail to the tie bar is welded using a GMA (MIG) butt joint. Prior to welding, the E-coat is removed and weld-through primer is applied to the top of the replacement upper tie bar. This is done before installation to ensure proper corrosion protection. The four silicon-bronze slot welds that were removed from the top of the upper rails can be replaced with MIG brazing. Accord-

ing to the General Motors Steel Reparability Matrix, MIG brazing is allowed on mild steel, using 8-mm x 16-mm slotted holes. The upper tie bar and the upper rails are made from mild steel and the slotted holes were previously made on the parts when grinding out the original welds. To access the General Motors Steel Reparability Matrix, go to the GM Collision Technical Repair Information website (www.goodwrench.com/gmgoodwrenchjsp/gmspo), click on Tech Info located in the upper left portion of the screen, and choose the Steel Reparability Matrix from the list of PDF files. MIG brazing is a welding process that uses less heat than conventional welding methods, which can reduce the heat-affect zone and help preserve corrosion protection. MIG brazing is explained in the I-CAR MIG Brazing (BRZ01) online training program. To review this program, go to www.i-caronlinetraining.com.
parts. Depending on the extent of the damage, the recommendation is to replace the tie bar along with at least the two partial upper side rail service parts. If one or both of the upper rails have non-repairable damage beyond the sectioning location, the recommendation is to replace one or both of the entire upper side rails, which are also available as service parts.
The GM procedure requires cutting each upper rail portion off and then removing the spot welds to release the upper tie bar, rather than removing the assembly at one time. Locate the cut line on each upper rail by measuring 225 mm forward from the centre of a hood-hinge mounting hole. After removing spot welds forward of the scribed line, and making the cuts at the scribed lines, the upper

Cobalt
This update is similar to the one announced at the end of 2008 for the Chevy Cobalt. According to the company, this vehicle has a similar front structure design, and also requires a unique procedure for replacing the front upper tie bar. While the entire procedure is covered in the March 17, 2008 Advantage Online article, to summarize, the body design of the 2005 and newer Chevrolet Cobalt uses a layered build sequence in the front structure. The upper outer rails are sleeved over the upper tie bar, which is basically the radiator core support. General Motors has a replacement service kit and procedure for replacing the upper tie bar and portions of the upper outer rails.

outer rail portions can be removed. The spot welds holding the upper tie bar assembly can now be drilled out and the damaged tie bar removed. Like the HHR, the replacement upper tie bar is installed using GMA (MIG) plug welds, since there is no two-sided access for replacement spot welds. The plug welds are made in

People Power
The best technology you have in your shop is the human kind.
While the focus on waterborne will no doubt continue, the challenge for bodyshops is really not about the paint at all; it’s about making the switch an opportunity to do more with your business than change out paint, guns, mixers, booths, and washers. Many who have already made the transition have taken it as an opportunity to promote an environmentally friendlier message within their communities, and those who have done so should be commended. It is actions like this that progressively change the face of an industry. Those who have made the change have also learned that they have had to shift some of their processes to accommodate the technical differences between solvent-borne and waterborne. In some ways, that may be one of the easier shifts the industry will see over the next few years. To me, the reason is simple. Changing the tools people have to work with is a lot easier than changing their habits. We have heard of and spoken about the need to be more efficient for quite some time now. Regardless of the name you give it—Six Sigma, lean process—it is still about being more organized in how work flows through your facility, and wasting fewer resources, most notably the human ones. Which brings me to my point: people. With all the current talk of technology and the economy, it should never be forgotten that the most valuable resource, and the best technology you have in your shop, is the human kind. If you are wise and employ this highly adaptive two-legged technology well—not just as a set of bodies but as the best, most adaptable information system ever created—you are sure to find that making it through today’s tough economic and technological transitions will be made all the easier. And, over time, a change in attitude there can change the very face of an industry. Take, for example, Waste Management Inc. Someone somewhere decided that it was possible to rebrand a waste collection company, which carried everything from trash to the most nasty leftovers of industry, as a “green solution provider.” Sure, there are naysayers, arguing that the new “clean, green” image is really not all that sincere. I would guess that those within the company might argue that they are trying to make the most of what must be a pretty nasty business at times. And besides, they didn’t make the garbage; they’re just the last ones to take possession. Sort of like the automotive recyclers. The transition from “junkyard” to responsible environmental citizen has been dramatic—something for everyone involved to be proud of. Participation in causes like the mercury switch removal program have, in a nutshell, helped this sector go from being singled out in the public forum for disdain, to part of the solution in making a better, less toxic world. There is still much work to do to get the word out to the public (and much of the trade for that matter), but at least they have something positive to show the world. And that should be the goal of everyone in this industry. Yes, you should be able to show your customers and your insurance partners that you can produce highquality work efficiently, but you also have to be able to stand behind every aspect of your business and the impact that it has on the world we live in, both locally and globally. The shift to waterborne helps, but the people who are part of your business can help you do so much more, if you let them. B Andrew Ross aross@bodyshopbiz.com
