electronic products andtechnology technology electronic products and

Technology solutions and an elite line-up of speakers addressing ‘hot-button’ topics in automotive electronics was centre stage at the Convergence conference and exhibition held in Detroit this October. The event has earned worldwide recognition as the premier transportation electronics event attracting leading executives, engineers and technologists from around the globe. Among the highlights was a panel discussion on the mobility ecosystem, as consumers seek to match cars with their lifestyle. Among the key attributes: environmentally conscious, safe, connected and affordable. While pending rollout of LTE wireless networks stirs excitement and skepticism within the auto design sphere, the potential effects are staggering in telematics, infotainment and safety. At the forefront of operating systems and middleware for the automotive infotainment market, Ottawa-based QNX Software Systems Co., demonstrated its latest mobile connectivity technologies in a new concept car at the show. The specially modified Chevrolet Corvette showcased QNX’s vision for the fully connected automobile — encompassing connectivity to the cloud, to roadside systems and a host of mobile-device apps. A multimedia dashboard showed how in-car systems can access everything from maps to find specific things, geosocial applications for locating nearby friends and even locating the closest parking spot. A dynamically reconfigurable digital instrument cluster provides both a driving mode (tachometer and speedometer) and an information mode (weather, navigation information, album art). Ford demonstrated its leadership, taking a practical, consumer-driven approach to advancing the field of autonomous driving and is urging widespread collaboration with groups ranging from academia, government,

suppliers and technology innovation companies, to the expert gamer and biologist schooled in chaos theory. “We have to take a holistic approach to autonomous driving, and that can only come with input from many different sources,” said Jeffrey Rupp, of Ford’s Active Safety research team. “Something as complex as a fully autonomous vehicle can only be achieved by taking careful evolutionary steps, rather than one revolutionary leap.” Ford has initiated the process, introducing collision avoidance technologies such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and blind spot information system. A Career Fair was also held at the event, providing career development opportunities for mobility engineers and to assist academic, government, corporate recruiters and employers in finding highly qualified candidates. “Everybody is starting to hire like crazy right now,” said David Cole, chairman of the Michigan-based Center for Automotive Research. “Unfortunately, there are not enough people with the right skills.” Engineers with a background in mechatronics are in particularly high demand, according to trend forecasts. For example, Chrysler advertised opportunities in areas ranging from electrical and electronic systems integration to racing technology. David Cole, chairman of the Michigan-based Center for Automotive Research says the industry will “never” see another job climate like the one that existed in pre-recession halcyon days. But the demands of technological change are combining with the retirements of Baby Boomers to create a “huge transition” in the industry’s engineering ranks. One thing is for sure – continuing encroachment of electronics into the automobile surely keeps the innovation wheels in motion.

Component benchmarking service for OEMs gauges price competitiveness An independent, web-based price benchmarking and risk assessment service for electronic components has been introduced by Lytica Inc., an Ottawa-based consultancy specializing in supply chain services. Heralded as the electronics industry’s “first and only” service of its kind, freebenchmarking.com lets companies quickly and confidentially compare their electronic components pricing against the firm’s proprietary database of current industry pricing, based on total component spending and spending by commodity. The project is the brainchild of Lytica president Ken Bradley, who worked with Nortel as a senior vice-president and chief procurement officer until 2002. “We’ve created this web service to be the go-to industry reference for component price “We’ve created this web service competitiveness and risk assessment. It will arm our clients with the information they to be the go-to industry reference need to negotiate more competitive pricing for component price competitiveness and reduce supply chain risk,” says Bradley. and risk assessment. Every client that confidentially submits its cost data receives, within a day, a detailed electronic report that not only assesses cost competitiveness (in terms of cost advantage or disadvantage to others) but also highlights areas of risk related to single-sourced and end-of-life components. freebenchmarking.com offers three levels of service. As its starting point, the ‘Silver Service’ provides a free pure benchmarking report, while the client’s component pricing is compared against freebenchmarking.com’s proprietary database of current industry pricing, based on total component spending. The report also contains valuable information on achieving potential cost savings from coding duplications, and addresses risks associated with single-sourced components. The fee-based Gold Service report builds on the Silver Service, adding valuable content the client can use to negotiate better component prices and reduce supply chain risk. The report includes a detailed analysis of client spend by commodity, with clearly identified opportunities for cost savings. Supply chain risk factor analysis is also included, identifying single-source and end-of-life risks before they become a liability. “When I oversaw the procurement of components on behalf of a $20B global company, I paid many times the cost of a freebenchmarking.com Gold report for assessments that were much less comprehensive or actionable,” he adds. The premium Platinum service provides customized cost savings and risk reduction programs based on clients’ individual needs. Lytica negotiates and implements savings on behalf of its clients, based on an innovative gain-share fee model. “It is important to highlight, that we are not component suppliers and that we have a stated policy of accepting no fees or commissions from suppliers based on the sale of components from a supplier to a Lytica,” Bradley states.

Artaflex acquired by team of EMS industry veterans The acquisition of specialized EMS provider Artaflex Inc., Markham ON, has been completed recently to a group of industry veterans led by Paul Walker, the founder and former chief executive officer of SMTC. The terms and value of the deal were not disclosed. “The opportunity to acquire Artaflex with all its unique differentiators and to partner with Gerry Iuliano, the co-founder of Artaflex and Phil Woodard who was previously the COO at SMTC and who will take on a similar role at Artaflex, was just too great to pass up,” says Walker. Artaflex is an integrated product development, commercialization and manufacturing company providing services to OEMs requiring expertise in a high mix and high complexity manufacturing environment. With engineering, logistical and manufacturing capabilities, customers partner with Artaflex to produce quality products. In addition to assembling printed circuit boards (pcb), Artaflex provides a full suite of additional services such as: electronic circuit design, pcb layout, test, rework/repair and box build enabling customers to benefit from greater vertical integration in their supplier base. “After advising Artaflex for the past few months, and other companies over a number of years, it became more apparent then ever that the mid tier Canadian market is lacking a strong EMS provider with the product development, commercialization and manufacturing differentiators that Artaflex has to offer,” adds Walker. “When you combine this with all the industry consolidation opportunities in this same mid tier space, it’s just a very exciting time to acquire Artaflex and be focused on Canada.”

Power Supplies, Batteries

Custom power

D

without custom pain By Steve Willis, deputy UK managing director, XP Power Inc.

espite the best intentions at the outset of an electronic product’s design, it’s commonplace for the power supply specification to evolve during the process and to only be finalized later on. At this point, it’s not uncommon to realize that the remaining physical space cannot accommodate an industry standard power supply, or that such units cannot fulfill other technical requirements. Obsolescence also creates demand for non-standard power supplies. Power supplies may fail in equipment that is otherwise perfectly functional and economical refurbishment can only be undertaken if a replacement power unit can be found, or developed. In both of the above circumstances,

designing a fully customized power supply in house, or contracting the work to a third party are potential options. However, both routes present technology, cost and time-to-market risks. This is particularly true with grid connected power supplies that have to meet stringent safety and EMC standards in order for the end equipment to meet the requirements of regulatory authorities such as TUV and UL. The option to create a simple ac-dc input then populate a printed circuit board (pcb) with standard dc-dc modules, sometimes called ‘bricks’, may look straightforward. But even this apparently simple approach is fraught with challenges. Why else would brick manufacturers provide training courses to help designers define requirements, avoid

instability through source impedance control, minimize EMI, ensure effective decoupling, improve load regulation and develop effective parallel arrays? Overcoming these technical challenges takes knowledge, experience, and considerable design time.

A process for creating reliable customized power from standard products For a growing number of companies, the solution to creating customized power within acceptable time and cost limits is to take the semi-custom route. In other words, using standard building blocks as the basis for power supplies - that meet specific requirements with respect to form, fit and function. As mentioned earlier, doing this inhouse requires experience and resources. The electrical design must meet technical requirements in the most economically viable way. Electronic design automation tools are then needed for schematic capture and pcb layout, mechanical layouts need to be modeled in 3D and thermal imaging is required to identify potential hotspots. Access to safety and EMI test equipment and the knowledge of how to use it properly are essential. The process for designing a reliable semi-custom power supply needs to be the same as that for a standard unit. The typical process adopted by XP Power is shown in Figure 1. After receiving a definition of requirements, the company draws up a specification proposal and compliance matrix for its customer. These are reviewed and approved before a detailed project plan is

Figure 2: Four dc-dc converters, an acdc boost converter with active PFC and a dc-ac inverter make up this uniquely rugged power supply created around standard building blocks.

prepared. Design is always an iterative process, so a detailed ‘Query Log’ is maintained to provide a record of decisions taken along the way. Prototype testing is followed by provision of full design verification test results. These include results of temperature cycling and other accelerated aging tests, where appropriate. A detailed design review process is fully documented throughout the development of the product and a production test specification is agreed before it goes into full production. The end result is a customized product that has been created to the same rigorous standards as a standard power supply.

Typical customization options Customization can be as simple as changing connectors. This might involve just removing a vertical connector and replacing it with a horizontal one. Other simple modifications include customizing covers with different fixings or producing custom wiring looms to reduce assembly time for the end equipment. Some of the most common requirements for more comprehensive customization are: Additional input surge protection. This may be needed where the power supply is going to operate in a particularly demanding situation involving high-energy surges and voltage spikes. The customization may involve creating a surge suppression circuit on a printed circuit board upon which a standard ac-dc power supply is then mounted. Power factor correction. Some companies prefer to manage the dc-dc parts of power system design in-house, but do not have the expertise or resources to handle power factor correction (PFC). Standard PFC units may not be suitable, so a customized active or passive PFC module may be developed to fit the form and function needed. Creating a Eurocard form factor. Eurocards are widely used in embedded systems but the range of Eurocard power supplies is limited. Designing a Eurocard to take a non-Eurocard format power supply is a common requirement to give the system designer greater flexibility in the choice of power supply. Eliminating fans. In some applications, fan cooling is not a viable option. As the only moving electro-mechanical part within a power supply, a fan will always represent a weak point with respect to reliability. Furthermore, the need to clean air filters adds a maintenance task. Where equipment operates in remote environments and maintenance becomes expensive, or where particularly harsh operating conditions limit

product life, it’s often possible to design a standard power supply into a convectioncooled package than can be bolted directly to the equipment enclosure. Integration of batteries and charging circuits. Some applications require integral battery back-up to protect against failure of the main input supply. Here, the power supply will include a charging circuit for the battery and automatic switching circuits, effectively turning a standard power supply into an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Addition of control and monitoring circuits. Customized control and monitoring can be added to many power supplies and some vendors, including XP Power, have inhouse expertise in writing software for these functions. The addition of input and output ‘OK’ signals, temperature sensors and fan speed controllers are popular options.

Figure 2 shows a customized power supply for a portable, secure, communications modem used in the field. It was developed around three standard, 150 Watt, dc-dc converters, type MTC150. XP Power added a discrete, 600W ac-dc boost converter with active power factor correction, two dc input conditioning modules, a further commercial dc-dc unit to create a 28V bus, and a 300W dc-ac inverter module. The resulting unit has a 28V battery input, a wide-range input of 10-36Vdc, and a universal 90 to 264Vac input. The outputs are 28Vdc, 12Vdc, and 110Vac. The power supply was designed in a lowprofile form factor with integral heat sink. This unit is a good example of a very heavily customized product with custom electrical and mechanical elements built around standard modules.

Avoiding problems with agency qualification Agency qualification (UL, TUV etc.) is required for most grid-connected power supplies. The cost and time taken to obtain qualification for end equipment is an important consideration so it’s vital that the risk of failure is minimized. Standard power supplies will have already gone through rigorous approvals processes but it is essential to ensure that customized units have been tested to the same standards. A supplier of customized power solutions must be able to provide test documentation that gives a high level of confidence with respect to agency requirements and customers should expect the same level of warranty on the customized power supplies as would be applicable to comparable standard products.

Time-to-market and economics The balance of quantity and complexity determines the economic viability of a semi-custom power supply design. Simple changes can be applied to relatively low cost products for quantities in the low hundreds. Large programs involving complex customization are only likely to be viable where the final value of business to the power supply manufacturer is in excess of $50,000. Full custom power supply design has a much higher economic entry point and few products will see the light of day in less than 6 months. In contrast, prototype semi-custom power supplies can typically be created in 6 to 12 weeks using field-proven, standard building blocks. Inline wire and cable identification methods By Pete Doyon, VP product management, Schleuniger Inc.

Wire ID Concepts Introduction

Many OEM’s require that individual wires and cables used in their products be clearly identified with a mark or label. For some, such as in the military and aerospace markets, wire and cable identification (or “wire ID”) is mandatory and the process is governed by stringent specifications, such as SAE AS50881 (formerly MIL5088L). For others, the decision to use wire ID is a voluntary one. Wires and cables can be identified as part of an “inline” process while they are being cut to length and stripped on automatic equipment. Alternatively, wire ID can be applied using a secondary manual or semi-automatic process. The scope of this article is limited to inline wire ID. This article will describe what type of information is typically identified on wire and cables, concepts for improved productivity, what types of systems are available and the pros and cons of each. Wire ID is used to identify individual wires during the life of a product, from initial product assembly and testing to servicing the product years down the road. Key identification requirements are legibility, permanence and abrasion resistance. In order to meet those requirements, the identification method used must be well suited for the environment where the product will be utilized.

Inkjet marking

Typical Wire ID Uses: TERMINATION ID is the most common type and it clearly identifies where a wire or cable is terminated on a terminal strip, mating connector, etc. This style also prevents any miswiring during harness assembly, product assembly and testing. TRACEABILITY: Many industries require traceability of product components and sub-assemblies. Company logos, serial numbers and date codes can be directly marked or labeled on each wire or cable to aid in traceability. BAR CODING: Several of the wire ID methods allow barcodes to be printed directly on wire or cable or on labels that are applied to them. There is a practical limitation when using barcodes on wires or cables under 0.100”.

LEAN MFG OF WIRING HARNESSES: Wire ID can be very cost effective, especially in high mix, low volume applications, such as when building one wiring harness at a time. Fully integrated, PC controlled wire processing machines can produce all of the wires necessary to build one complete wiring harness. SINGLE WIRE VS. MANY COLORS: In high mix, low volume applications, the key to success is to reduce tooling changeover time to the absolute minimum. In wire processing applications, each wire color change can take from one to several minutes. By reducing the number of wire colors from 10 to 1, changeover frequency and therefore labor can be reduced by 90%. If permitted, using labeled white wire instead of many different colors can yield exceptional savings. SOME OF THE BENEFITS INCLUDE: • Reduced changeover frequency saves labor costs • Purchase bulk wire at a lower unit cost • All wires can be marked using one inkjet ink or hotstamp foil color • Larger reels or barrels impart less 'memory' on the wire, resulting in more consistent wire processing

and the marks are quite legible and permanent. Other than laser marking, it’s one of the few marking methods that can produce a permanent mark on Teflon insulations. It’s also easy to change the color of the marking foil, making it possible to print on every insulation color. On the negative side, the wire must be stationary while the hotstamp process takes place (approximately 1 sec cycle time), thus lowering the production throughput. LABELING MACHINES offer print and apply technology, making it possible to use them with inline wire processing systems. They provide high resolution (300+ dpi) print resolution and multi-line text capability. Like hotstamp, the wire must be stationary during the labeling process (4 – 5 sec cycle time), which also lowers the production rate. DIRECT THERMAL TRANSFER is a relative newcomer to wire ID. Instead of using thermal transfer technology to mark labels, the thermal transfer system marks directly onto the wire or cable. Like hotstamp marking or labeling, the wire or cable must stop during the marking process. The cycle time is slightly longer than hotstamp at approximately 1 to 2 seconds. An advantage of thermal transfer marking over labeling is that the cost

If the wiring harness for a given product was originally designed with many different colors, an alternative is to use white wire exclusively and print the name of the color it replaces on the wire. For example, the word “RED” could be printed every 3” along a white wire instead of using a red wire. In addition, the circuit number could be printed on the wire as well to distinguish it from other white wires that have the “RED” designation.

Hotstamp

MARKING ON-THE-FLY: Like laser marking, inkjet marking is done while the wire is moving, therefore the production rate of the wire processing machine is not greatly reduced. Continuous marking is best suited for inkjet or other marking methods that can be done ‘on-the-fly’.

Wire Identification Methods: Hotstamp marking is one of the oldest wire identification methods. On the positive side, it’s one of the lowest cost marking methods

INKJET: Marking systems used for marking wire and cable are of the continuous inkjet (CIJ) type. Newer inkjet printers on the market are simpler, faster and more reliable than their predecessors. They feature automatic startup / shutdown cycles and much better process control. LASER: There are a number of different laser sources that are used in wire marking. By far, the most common are those that produce wavelengths in the UV part of the spectrum. UV laser marking is used primarily for military and aerospace applications.

Conclusion

As wiring harnesses and cable assemblies become more complex, proper identification of individual wires and cables is crucial during wiring harness assembly, product assembly and testing as well as servicing. Things to consider when selecting the best wire ID methods and labeling includes: • Applicable specifications • Insulation types being marked • Information that needs to be marked (IE characters number, logos, etc.) • Typical batch sizes • Processing speed • Cost per mark According to Lean Principles, the ideal batch size is a quantity of one. A completely integrated wire marking / processing system can produce an individual wire on demand or all of the individual wires necessary to build one complete wiring harness. This results in less ‘work-inprocess’ and all of the other benefits of One-Piece-Flow manufacturing.

END MARKING is typically used for termination ID’s, while continuous marking can be used in addition to end marking to provide more information at preset intervals along each wire or cable assembly.

WIRE LIST MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE: Some type of Wire List Management Software (WLMS) is required to control the wire processing system and the inline Wire ID system. The WLMS is used to keep track of the processing parameters for every wire that will be produced. Typical parameters include wire type and size, overall wire length, strip lengths, marker text and marking positions.

per mark is much less since there are no labels to purchase.

Thermal Management & Enclosures

Selection of

non-metallic enclosures

PROTECTS wastewater treatment system controls By Jim Brant, president, City Water LLC

City Water LLC, Williston FL, provides municipalities a turnkey wastewater treatment plant solution capable of effectively accommodating between 500 to 10,000 gallons. The evolution of this system featured the need to overcome a significant challenge specific to the reliable protection of critical controls.

The Challenge: enclosures fail to protect

Many wastewater treatment systems are in demanding environments subject to high humidity, corrosive salt water and strong UV degradation. After two-to-three years of service in such applications we began to notice that the integrity of our controls was being threatened by failure of the electrical enclosures used to house and supposedly protect them. At that time we used stainless steel enclosures that were not suitable for long-term reliability within this particular combination of environmental pressures. Part of this problem originates with the fact that although tensile strength is high with metal enclosures, flexural strength (the material’s ability to withstand denting) is relatively low. Once

metal has gone beyond its elastic limit it has created a potential leak path that could compromise an enclosure’s seal integrity. Initially we thought that simply by switching to non-metallic enclosures the problem would be solved. However, even with some non-metallics the harmful of effects of UV rays were still evident through ‘blooming’ of the polymeric substrate. Moreover, we were not satisfied with design elements that seemed to inhibit the amount of available space within such enclosures - and the ease with which controls could be mounted inside the boxes. Although we had improved performance results in flexural strength and the ability to withstand an impact without permanent deformation or denting, we still had not found the ideal enclosure product.

The Solution: non-metallic enclosures & UV protection

Consequently, we began to explore property performance characteristics of available product lines and discovered Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures. A primary dif-

ference in this product line is the fact that all enclosures are molded from SolarGuard, a patented sheet molded Turnkey wastewater treatment compound formulation plant solution includes that claims to provide non-metallic enclosures for superior molded-in UV protection of controls system. resistance. We found those claims to be true and consequently are now successfully using the Stahlin J Series of enclosures to protect our control systems from UV damage as well as other environmental threats such as corrosion and moisture. Additionally, the fact that Stahlin’s non-metallic enclosures are manufactured from a rugged composite material versus a molded thermoplastic, results in significant durability and impact resistance because of low coefficient of thermal expansion versus stainless steel. Certain design features have also proven to be of value. Specifically: the rounded corners, swing-out panels and optimum enclosure depth are conducive to easy, effective installation of controls. A poured polyurethane seamless gasket ensures that the enclosures remain waterproof and dust-tight. In our ‘deep-south’ applications, the reliable seal of Stahlin enclosures has an added benefit of keeping out the sometimes unfriendly lizard population.

The Conclusion

Not all enclosures are created equal. Success in any application demands that the proper enclosure product be specified to meet the individual environmental factors impacting the reliability of proper protection for important controls and electrical systems.

DIGI-KEY CORPORATION COMPANY PROFILE In 1972, Dr. Ron Stordahl, an innovative electrical engineer, started a distribution company to provide other design engineers with quality electronic components from a customer-centered distributor. Starting with a fairly small inventory and initially marketing mostly to hobbyists, Digi-Key grew and, thirty-eight years later, provides the industry’s broadest selection of electronic components available for off-the-shelf delivery to customers worldwide. As one of the world’s fastest-growing franchised distributor, Digi-Key has earned its reputation as an international electronic component distributor focused on providing top quality products and service to its customers around the globe. Digi-Key’s foundation is its commitment to a customer-centered business principle, which has propelled the company from the 11th largest global franchised component distributor in 2005 to the 8th largest in 2009, based on the May 2010 EE|Times Distribution survey. Digi-Key is the 4th largest electronic component distributor in North America. Digi-Key is an authorized global distributor of more than 440 of the world’s leading suppliers of semiconductor, passive, interconnect, and electromechanical products. Digi-Key stocks more than 500,000 board level components featured in its 2,700-page print catalog, and more than 1.7 million products are offered on Digi-Key’s Canadian website, www.digikey.ca. Customers in more than 170 countries order from Digi-Key’s expansive inventory of products available for off-the-shelf delivery. Digi-Key processes and ships orders to customers worldwide from its 600,000 square-foot (55,741 square-meter) Product Distribution Center (PDC) in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA. Additionally, Digi-Key has the ability to process an order from entry to shipping in as little as 15 minutes. Ninety-nine percent of Digi-Key orders are shipped the same day they are received. Digi-Key ships orders to customers worldwide by UPS, FedEx, USPS and DHL. For Digi-Key’s customers in North America, orders are shipped directly from Digi-Key’s PDC and routed to their destinations throughout Canada, Mexico, and the US for next-day delivery.

“Digi-Key has experienced steady growth in Canada with an increase of more than 46% in sales year over year for January through August 2010,” said Mark Larson, Digi-Key’s president and COO. “Digi-Key has maintained its position as the global franchised distributor with the industry’s largest offering of product available for off-the-shelf delivery. We are able to provide our customers with their design engineering and purchasing needs, whatever they need, when they need it.” Digi-Key also provides customer service, live technical support, and advanced supply chain solutions tools, as well as other value-added services from its central location in the US.

small quantity prototype orders without being subjected to minimum order quantities that require ordering a large number of parts. Digi-Key’s Bill-of-Materials (BOM) Manager provides real-time pricing and availability, secure storage, and easy search and reference features. The BOM system allows purchasers to create separate BOMs for specific projects and place orders for varying quantities of assemblies to be produced. Purchasers can create and save a BOM with correct part ratios and multiply by the number of assemblies during the ordering process. Digi-Key’s BOM enables purchasers to create a ‘single kit’ to package kits together or a ‘multi kit’ to package each kit separately. Purchasers can also create parts lists by quickly adding or importing a list of parts and then creating a quote or an order. Earlier this year, Digi-Key launched its iPhone application for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in North America. Digi-Key’s iPhone application is currently available in English and allows customers to create Digi-Key orders on their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch devices. Features of Digi-Key’s iPhone application enable users to search for parts, create shopping carts, place orders, access their My Digi-Key accounts, get product specifications, view product photos, learn about new products and new technologies at Digi-Key, and more.

“DIGI-KEY HAS EXPERIENCED STEADY GROWTH IN CANADA WITH AN INCREASE OF MORE THAN 46% IN SALES YEAR OVER YEAR FOR JANUARY THROUGH AUGUST 2010.” — MARK LARSON, PRESIDENT, DIGI-KEY CORPORATION Digi-Key’s assistance to purchasers and engineers is expansive. Digi-Key is committed to providing its customers in Canada with the tools and products necessary to advance from prototype design to production while simultaneously addressing cost and time-to-market issues in a streamlined process. From the initial concept to prototype build and production, Digi-Key provides purchasers and engineers with the ability to build and revise a bill of materials for a new device, construct a prototype, conduct field tests, and progress through supply chain management to full production. With Digi-Key’s design-to-production ecosystem, both large and small companies can create

Sort by Price is a feature available for all registered Digi-Key users after logging in to their My Digi-Key accounts. This feature is based on tier 1 or unit pricing and applies to all parts, all Digi-Key websites, and all Digi-Key supported currencies. Registered users can sort by price in ascending or descending order in addition to applying filters for product in stock, lead free product, and RoHS Compliant product. An Advanced Sort option is also available and allows users to request parts in specific quantities. “More customers are recognizing that Digi-Key can provide many valuable services to aid in the design process,” Larson said. “Digi-Key delivers on its service commitments. Our goal is to consistently meet these expectations for our customers in Canada, North America, and around the globe.”

Phoenix Contact Maximum System Availability Phoenix Contact introduces the uninterruptible Trio Power USV 24V / 5A power supply combines the power supply itself and the electronic bypass in one and the same housing. When the AC line fails, the connected loads continue to operate without any interruption. For longer line failures, the PC mode ensures that a control system automatically restarts as soon as the supply voltage returns. This saves time when compared to a manual restart. The combination of four battery modules with capacities of 1.3, 3.4, 7.2 and 12 Ah with a rated voltage of 24 V DC allow individual buffer times to be configured. The battery modules are rail mounted and are only 52, 112, 164 and 231 mm wide. They have a life span of six years at an ambient temperature of 20°C. They are leak proof, suitable for high currents and deepdischarge proof. The final charging voltage is 27.6 V. Ambient temperatures of 0-40°C are recommended.

terminal Blocks with Push-in Connection technology (Pit)

Pit Relays

Using the new PIT range of terminal blocks from Phoenix Contact, solid or stranded wires with cross sections as small as 0.34 mm² (22 AWG) with ferrules, can now be connected directly without the need for any special tools. As soon as the wire is inserted, the contact springs open automatically. With insertion forces up to 50 percent lower than before, it has never been easier to plug in wires and make contact. The high contact forces exceed those stipulated by the relevant standards and ensure that the contacts between conductors are both reliable and of the highest quality. Wires can be removed using the actuator element, which is clearly identified by its orange colour. Simply press down the actuator to release the pressure on the contact springs, and remove the wire.

The new PLC-PIT coupling relays from Phoenix Contact can be simply and quickly connected up without tools thanks to the Push-In-Terminal (PIT). The push-in connection technology permits a high degree of usability and ergonomics. Using this connection technology, even small wires from 0.34 mm² and larger – such as sensor wires – can be reliably and simply connected as insertion is easy. With the PLC relay system, customers can choose between three connection systems: screw, spring cage, or PIT spring clamp connection. Just the same as the complete PLC relay system, PLC-PIT coupling relays offer many advantages: They are just 6.2 mm wide and are available in many special versions in addition to the universal types. A complete range of accessories with system cable adapters, feed terminals, and plug-in bridges are available for the relay system.

Renesas opens velocity lab for embedded systems

Quebec tech group looks to accelerate growth

Renesas Electronics America Inc., Santa Clara CA, officially launched Velocity Lab, representing a suite of Renesas and third-party development components designed to enable customers to develop embedded solutions quickly, easily and cost-effectively. Velocity Lab ties together advanced technologies in model-based design, simulation and automatic code generation allowing customers to narrow the gap between design strategy and production while providing the flexibility to create solutions that meet changing market needs. “As electronic control units become more complex and time-to-market demands increase, we have found that designers often have limited flexibility to change components for next-generation systems. The potential of these systems is limited by cost, time and redesign effort,” says Paul Fox, director, segment marketing, automotive business unit, Renesas Electronics America.

During its 20th anniversary celebration bash attended by some 375 guests, Montreal-based Quebec Technology Association (AQT) issued a strong call to action in support of the growth and commercialization of ICT companies. The high tech group took the opportunity to launch “Step into the AQT Accelerator” a new positioning campaign that clearly confirms and highlights the Association’s role as a driving force in the growth of the Quebec Information and Communications Technologies industry. According to association CEO Nicole Martel, AQT is well aware of the impact of economic recovery and international competition on its member companies. “Company executives must take quick action to meet their customer’s needs, grow their markets, and retain a sufficient pool of qualified employees,” Martel says. “They have little time to devote to seeking out financial and professional partners, let alone best practices to improve overall management and increase sales. In doing so, they could miss out on

CSA Group opens new headquarters CSA Group, a worldwide leader in standards, testing and certification and consumer product evaluation services, officially unveiled its new energy-efficient, $14-million headquarters at its recently refurbished location on Rexdale Boulevard in Toronto, where it has operated since 1954. The building was rebuilt in many areas to incorporate state-of-the-art energy-efficient systems and construction while at the same time reusing much of the original infrastructure. “This multi-million dollar flagship building serves not only as our global headquarters, but also as a testament to our strength, stability and foundation. We are a true Canadian success story that has stood the test of time to become a global service provider for the US, Canada and the world,” says Ash Sahi, president and CEO.

business opportunities or risk not having the resources they need to propel their growth.” “This is why companies and their partners need to mobilize. They need to join forces and ensure their voices are clearly heard, and this is precisely where the AQT Accelerator comes in by bringing all of our services together under a single heading,” adds Martel. Designed for companies, CEOs, and respective management teams, the AQT Accelerator provides a venue to meet with peers and future partners and showcase companies.
