Nikola details plans for fuel cell electric truck rollouts
Nikola has released details for its planned rollout of hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV).
It will first launch North American production of its Tre cabover battery-electric truck, followed by a FCEV version of that same truck and the long-range Nikola Two FCEV sleeper capable of ranges between 300 and 900 miles (480 and 1,440 km).
“To expedite the transition to a carbon-free future, the trucking industry needs heavy-duty, zero-emission commercial vehicles engineered to match the weight and range capabilities of today’s diesel trucks. Nikola is excited to introduce additional detail about our portfolio of FCEV trucks and our continued commitment to sustainable commercial transportation,” said Nikola’s global head of Photo: Nikola FCEV, Jason Roycht. åÃòÆð: ÇéÕ¯ñÅ
The lineup will include: Nikola Tre BEV cabover for regional applications and trips up to 300 miles (480 km); the Nika Tre FCEV for regional haul an a range of up to 500 miles (800 km); and the longhaul Nikola Two FCEV sleeper for up to 900 miles (1,440 km).
Nikola claims the first Tre FCEV prototypes will be built in the second quarter of this year, with production in the second half of 2023.
The longhaul Nikola Two FCEV will be built on a new chassis designed for the North American market and will launch in late 2024, according to the company.
The fuel cell power modules and hydrogen storage systems are currently being developed, the company announced.
“Our plan is to enter the market in steps,” said Roycht. “We are building on the current Tre platform with the planned launch of our fuel-cell and hydrogen storage systems in 2023. These systems are designed to be scalable in order to handle the greater power and longer-range requirements for longhaul, which allows for concurrent integration into the chassis design of the Nikola Two FCEV Sleeper. Utilizing common components and systems for hydrogen propulsion will support greater economies of scale and also allow Nikola to continuously expand and adapt our FCEV truck portfolio to address the diverse requirements of commercial trucking.”

Fleets continue ordering trucks at ‘near-record levels’
Class 8 truck orders remained strong in February, with an impressive 44,000 units booked according to preliminary data from FTR.
That was up 3% from January and 209% year-over-year, and marked the second strongest February ever. Orders over the past 12 months total 338,000 units.
“There is tremendous pent-up demand for trucks. There are severe bottlenecks in the supply chain involving computer chips, wiring harnesses, and a whole host of various parts. OEMs are under intense pressure to deliver as many vehicles as they can, as soon as they can,” said Don Ake, vice-president of commercial vehicles for FTR.
Ake added: “The supply chain is so dysfunctional right now and there are so many parts affected, it is difficult to predict when the logjam breaks loose. The vaccine should help component manufacturers find more workers. There are also lengthy waits at the ports causing delays in imported parts.”
ACT Research reported preliminary Class 8 orders of 43,800 units, and Classes 5-7 orders of 25,400 units. Medium-duty orders were down 4% from January but up 12% year-over-year.

Kenworth reveals T680 Next Gen
Õ¶éòðæ é¶ TFH@ çÆ Á×ñÆ êÆó·Æ 寺 êðçÅ Ú°¾ÇÕÁÅ
Kenworth drew inspiration from race cars, iPhones and fine-crafted watches when designing its T680 Next Gen.
That according to chief engineer Joe Adams, who revealed the upgrades during an online launch Feb. 11. The T680 was launched in 2012 and frequently updated for improved aerodynamics and fuel economy. The Next Gen model brings another possible 6% gain in fuel economy thanks to aero enhancements and a narrower front end.
The fairings have been redesigned and foldable side extenders close the trailer gap, while still offering drivers access to the back of the cab. Battery access has been improved as well, thanks to an inspection panel built into the newly designed steps, which give a more stair-like entry.
New, heated LED headlamps are an option, and Kenworth integrated a turn signal strip into the fender to offer other motorists better visibility when the truck is turning. The narrower front end required a redesigned cooling system and engineers focused on under-truck airflow management to better Photo: Kenworth åÃòÆð: Õ¶éòðæ direct air under the truck while also protecting the cooling system.
The interior was rethought as well, and now comes with new colors offering greater contrast. A new Diamond package color, madrona, introduces coppery stitching and emblems on the leather seats, offering a higher-end automotive look. New fabrics have been added to areas such as the seats and door pads.
Also new is a 15-inch, highly-customizable vibrant driver display. Drivers can access a Favorites menu to set up gauge positioning as they like. Active driver safety systems such as lane keep assist and Wingman Fusion are integrated into the display.
Kenworth spent two years and millions of dollars designing the interface. Research included more than 100 driver interviews, and engineers worked, slept and lived in the trucks to experience what pro drivers do. The cockpit experience is rounded out with a new smart wheel, giving control to features such as cruise control and the sound system.
The original T680 will continue to be offered for a period of time as the T680 Next Gen is rolled out.
