The Coming Wireless Service Bay T By Tom Venetis, Editor

The move is to seamlessly link diagnostic and repair information to shop software so work estimates can be made and parts queued up for ordering without the service technician leaving the bay.

his year’s AAPEX/SEMA show in Las Vegas showcased how much wireless connectivity is going to be part of tomorrow’s service bays. A range of technology providers, from Delphi to OTC, showcased technologies designed for technicians to connect to the latest repair information without having to leave the service bay. Each showed how new tools can not only pull the needed diagnostic codes and information from the vehicle, but take that information and connect seamlessly to the ‘Cloud’ to pull down repair information, vehicle updates and ‘real world’ service tips. The service technician will never have to leave the bay or the side of the vehicle and go to a distant laptop or desktop to get that information. They won’t even have to access different databases as the scan tools and systems will now access all of the information from, say, Mitchell 1 to Identifix simultaneously. It will summarize the information and present the most likely fix while pulling out needed wiring diagrams or re-flash codes. It does not stop there. The move is to seamlessly link diagnostic and repair information to shop software so work estimates can be created and parts queued up for ordering. These work estimates can then be printed by the service writer and shown to a waiting customer or emailed to their smart phone or office in order to get that person’s approval. Others demonstrated solutions that allow a technician’s smart phone or wireless tablet device to become a diagnostic tool. We often speak about the need for shops to invest in new equipment in order to stay up-to-date on vehicle repair. Too often we focus on large service equipment, tire changers and faster lifts, new refrigerant machines or fluid changers. Sometimes we talk about the need to keep up with new scan tools and maintaining subscriptions to online repair information databases. All of them are important. What shops must start focusing on is making sure they have the wireless connectivity needed for these new wireless scan tools and equipment to work. There are still a surprising number of service shops that have no wireless service or simply see it as a means of giving customers a way of accessing their email and YouTube while they wait for the work to be done. Wireless is not something they think about for the service bays. Wireless tools and continuous connectivity are going to be crucial to not only work on today’s complex vehicles, but to retain customer loyalty, as many expect businesses to be using the latest technology. If time is lost as technicians run about looking for a free desktop or laptop, or to come to the service writer’s desk to find wiring diagrams, customers will likely take their vehicle somewhere else.

What do you think? Have your say and speak your mind! letterstotheeditor@ssgm.com 6 SSGM November 2013

Race Is On For

Low-Copper Friction Manufacturers of automotive friction are starting to market new brake formulations to meet low-copper standards By Tom Venetis

A

utomotive friction makers are beginning to announce new lowcopper friction for the aftermarket in the ongoing effort to meet the ‘Better Brake Laws’ announced in some U.S. states. ‘Better Brake Laws’ were first announced in California and Washington State. The legislation mandates the reduction of heavy metals and copper. Copper is known to cause damage to certain kinds of fish and sensitive

watersheds, lakes and rivers. The laws have broad industry support, with the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, Brake Manufacturers Association and the Heavy Duty Brake Manufacturers Association giving their support to the initiative. All the producers of automotive friction have agreed to participate in a self-certification process where they will have an industry-sponsored registrar that will ensure a third-party lab

will determine the compliance of the submitted friction materials meet with the legislative requirements. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has worked with industry members to create an industry standard for markings that will appear on the packaging of automotive friction, a Three Leaf design that will clearly identify friction materials as being low-copper. “While the legislation is statebased, it actually has global impli-

Brakes || cations since brake manufacturers and vehicle OEMs are expected to introduce new, compliant formulations across all markets,” says Chris Battershell, director, braking North America, Federal-Mogul Vehicle Components segment, makers of the Wagner brake line of friction. “The initial compliance level — identified as Level ‘A’ by the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association [AASA] and Brake Manufacturers Council — regulates cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and asbestos. Level A compliance is required by January 2014 in California and January 2015 in Washington State. The next level of compliance — Level ‘B’ — is required by January 2021, and covers all of the Level A metals as well as copper, which must be reduced to less than five per cent of material content by weight [“low copper”]. The final level of compliance — Level ‘N’ — reduces copper content to less than 0.5 per cent of material weight [“zero copper”]. The deadline for Level N compliance is January 2025.” While the transition to low-copper friction is being rolled out in phases, friction makers have already started to bring out low-copper products to the market, says Terry Heffelfinger, vice-president, product development R&D/quality with Brake Parts Inc., maker of the Raybestos line of friction. The challenge for friction makers is that in moving to new formulations one has to keep the same qualities in the new lowcopper friction material that vehicle owners have come to expect from today’s high-quality ceramic friction, which is low noise, stopping power and wear. Anything less will not be tolerated by vehicle owners or installers. At AAPEX/SEMA this year, Brake Parts Inc. announced the Element 3 brake friction with Enhanced Hybrid Technology (EHT), combining the best attributes of ceramic and semi-metallic into one brake pad formulation, offering vehicle owners a combination of quiet perforwww.ssgm.com

mance and durability, and reducing the copper. “In the past you had NAO, Ceramic or Semi-Met,” says Heffelfinger. “What we have done is combine the best of both worlds, of semi-metallic and ceramic. Semi-metallic has certain advantages and ceramic has certain advantages. What we have done is come up with Element 3 with Advanced Hybrid Technology. What

we had done is come up with a new friction formulation that is environmentally friendly, is compliant up to the 2021 [Level B] regulation for copper in Washington State and California. It delivers on the stopping power and braking control. It has great pedal feel and provides no-noise.” Heffelfinger adds Brake Parts Inc. put its Element 3 through rigorous real-world tests and industry standard

Element 3 went through a range of Dyno validations, such as SAE J2784, was used on domestic, foreign name-plate and fleet vehicles and benchmarked on noise, braking, wear and groan measures. “The analogy that I would use is that when we began to take asbestos out of brakes 15 years ago we came out with non-asbestos organic materials that did not work so well,” Heffelfinger continues. “There were pulsation issues, and the performance and stopping power was not there. That is why we have done over a million miles of road testing, put [Element 3] on all kinds of different vehicles and fleets across the country, and tested on all the standards in the industry to prove that it is as good a product as we say.” Wagner Brake recently introduced 2021-compliant lowcopper formulations — known as Wagner OE21 — now available in Wagner Thermo Quiet CeramicNXT brake pads. The Level B LeafMark designation, indicating full compliance with 2021 requirements, is now being added to ThermoQuiet CeramicNXT packaging. Bosch announced at the AAPEX/SEMA show in Las Vegas a new set of copper-free ceramics for its QuietCast 16 SSGM November 2013

line of friction. According to the release given at the show to the automotive press, the new materials will meet the highest performance standards and will be introduced in the first quarter of 2014, well ahead of the 2025 deadline. “As a manufacturer, we make sure that low-copper brake products have the same characteristics as our copper brake product line in terms of quality, fit, form, function and performance,” says Ramzi Yako, president of ProMax Auto Parts Depot Ltd. “We are supplementing ingredients in our formulation that are harmful to our environment with environmentallyfriendly ingredients that should not have any effect on the quality of the performance of the brake pads. Drivers or installers should not be concerned by removing copper from the formulation. We have other ingredients that we can use to replace copper. We are already testing product with low-copper and test results have showed no loss in quality of performance.” “Wagner ThermoQuiet CeramicNXT brake pads, with Wagner OE21 technology are our best brake pads ever,” says Federal-Mogul’s Battershell. “We’re confident that as technicians and consumers learn about the advantages of these new pads, they will want to quickly transition to low-copper technology. These formulations are 35 per cent quieter and provide 15 per cent more stopping power and up to 40 per cent greater fade resistance than our previous Wagner ceramic formulations. “Wagner brake engineers developed an advanced tribological ‘fingerprinting’ process that enabled us to map the dynamic properties of copper in a full range of operating conditions and then identify alternative materials that provide superior NVH control, improved stopping power, reduced fade and outstanding dusting characteristics,” says Battershell. “So by recommending Wagner ThermoQuiet CeramicNXT brake pads featuring OE21 technology, the service writer can focus on these proven performance benefits. That’s a compelling message for any vehicle owner.” SSGM www.ssgm.com

Winner of the 2014 Raybestos Rattlesnake Toyota Tundra Dave Cramer from Vancouver, Washington.

At the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo in Las Vegas, representatives from Brake Parts Inc. and Affinia Global Chassis, the respective manufacturers of Raybestos brake and Raybestos chassis products, presented the keys to the winner of the 2014 Raybestos Rattlesnake Toyota Tundra. Its new owner, Dave Cramer, is a property manager with Ross Pacific Management in Vancouver, Wash. “To say I’m excited would be an understatement,” said Cramer. “I must have entered ten-thousand contests in my lifetime, and this is the first time I won anything.” Cramer said he’s a bit of a car fanatic. “I’m single, but I own five cars!” The Raybestos Rattlesnake ups that to six. Cramer’s son Eric, a deputy sheriff and retired army ranger, joined him at the presentation. The signature-edition truck was the grand prize in the brands’ Summer 2013 North American sales promotion. The winning entry was pulled from more than 170,000 entries received. “Presenting a vehicle this impressive is always exciting,” said Jeff Stauffer, senior vice-president, global marketing, Brake Parts Inc. “We’re always happy to deliver our grand prize to someone who appreciates the effort and the engineering that goes into a custom build. Dave is going to be the envy of every truck enthusiast in Vancouver.” Addictive Dessert Designs custom18 SSGM November 2013

A rattler with the flair of a Corey Miller tattoo is shown on both sides of the truck, and a signature “Raybestos Flying R” is emblazoned on the hood. Thanks to Toyota Racing Development, a Toyota 5.7-Liter aluminum i-FORCE DOHC 32 valve V-8 with a tuned TRD Supercharger helps the Raybestos Rattlesnake reach 600+ hp. It also includes a high-lift off road suspension and off-road shocks. Its stopping power comes from the same Raybestos short track racing brake package used by the Joe Gibbs Racing team … and the Raybestos Rattlesnake stretches its off-road muscle with Raybestos Professional Grade chassis parts. Nicholas Jacquez, vice-president of marketing and product development for Affinia Global Chassis said, “This was a true team effort. Individual artists, craftsman, engineers and marketers all came together to build an amazing truck and an equally dynamic marketing program. This shows what you can do when you give creative thinkers and builders free reign.” “This was our very first custom truck build,” said Stauffer, “and we couldn’t have done such an incredible job without the proficiency and knowhow of Toyota Racing Development.”

provides the MAHLE Group with the resources to offer a full line of thermostat products to the automotive aftermarket. “Resulting from the acquisition, MAHLE Original and Behr thermostat products incorporate the development and production expertise of the Behr Group combined with the power of the MAHLE brand,” said Jon Douglas, general manager, MAHLE Aftermarket North America. “The pairing of these strong brands offers a significant benefit to customers in the automotive aftermarket who expect original equipment quality that is synonymous with the MAHLE Original and Behr brands.” MAHLE technical experts indicate that while thermostats are designed to last for the entire service life of a vehicle and are not naturally subject to wear, a number of factors can lead to material fatigue and require replacement. Whether due to an accident or as part of repair or maintenance work done to the cooling system, thermostats should be replaced to ensure continued functionality. The slightest reduction of functionality can cause severe consequences since the thermostat is needed to regulate the engine temperature with coolant.

Rislone Fuel Injector Cleaner Gates Micro-V Component Kits 1:1 tensioner-to-drive belt replacement ratios are vital to keeping the Accessory Belt Drive System operating at peak efficiency because automatic tensioners are designed with the same life cycles as the belt and should be inspected/replaced together – the recommended replacement interval is 97,000 km. Gates now makes it easier to replace the drive belt and automatic tensioner and pulley(s) at the same time with the introduction of Micro-V Component Kits. There are many benefits of replacing the tensioner at the same time as the drive belt, which include: replace all worn system components at the same time – replacing a drive

belt when the damping mechanism is worn on a tensioner greatly reduces the life of the new belt; increased customer satisfaction – reduce comebacks by eliminating belt noise, which is typically not a belt problem but a systems issue which is forcing the belt to make noise; a slipping belt can create problems such as belt noise, heat for the bearings, loss of efficiency for the accessories, false codes, and, as stated before, customer comebacks. Diagnostic Tips for

Chrysler’s LIN-Bus Network By Steve Anderson, Identifix Chrysler and Mitsubishi Specialist Certified ASE Master + L1, A/C Recovery and Recycling

T

here is a new vehicle communication network in the Chrysler world: Local Interconnect Network (LIN). LIN-Bus is a small, relatively slow and inexpensive network compared to the Controller Area Network (CANBus). LIN is used mostly for body electrical systems. There are several benefits to using LIN-Bus. It is very reliable, reduces vehicle build costs, and uses less wiring compared to other communication systems. It is also extremely easy to diagnose using a compatible scan tool and a Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM). The LIN network is made up of one master node (module) and several (up to16) slave nodes. Since the master module is connected to the CAN-Bus, all scan tool diagnostics are done via the master. There is no way to communicate directly with the slave nodes. The operation of LIN-Bus is simple. The LIN master sends out a reference voltage (7 to 12 volts) to the LIN slave. The slave has an internal processor that pulls the voltage low to produce the LIN-Bus mes-

sage. Figure 1 shows a typical LIN-Bus lab scope pattern. The most common systems in Chrysler vehicles that use the LIN-Bus network are turn signals, wipers, radio controls, heated seats, power windows, power locks, power mirrors and the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). This article will cover three examples of how the LIN-Bus works and tips for proper diagnosis. Example 1: Let’s first look at the turn signals on a 2008 RT body. This body style is found on the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country. Figure 2 shows a simplified diagram for the turn signal system on this vehicle. The LIN master for this system is the Cabin Compartment Node (CCN), also known as the instrument cluster. The LIN slave is the multi function switch. When the turn signal switch is positioned for a left or right signal a LINBus message is transmitted to the CCN on the dedicated LIN wire. The CCN then sends a CAN/IHS-Bus message to the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) and the

Charge Up!

Battery technology changing to meet power requirements of today’s vehicles By Tom Venetis, Editor

A

utomotive batteries are working harder than ever before. It used to be automotive batteries had to support only a few things, for example, starting the vehicle to powering the headlights and the car radio. Everything else was mechanical and required no electricity. Today, even the simplest things require electricity, from the systems to lock and unlock a car door and raise and lower the windows, to operating an ever widening array of onboard electronics, solenoids and ever more advanced navigation and entertainment systems that are becoming standard on a growing number of

24 SSGM November 2013

p 24-26 Batteries.indd 24

vehicle makes and models. This has spurred new advancements in battery technologies in order to meet the electrical needs of today’s vehicles, which now require much more power to successfully operate in today’s vehicles than years previous. “A number of years ago, General Motors and ACDelco stopped using maximum CCA as the benchmark for battery performance,” says David Kerr, ACDelco senior battery engineer for General Motors Customer Care and Aftersales. “Instead, we began to specify batteries with the right CCA, but increased reserve capacity [RC].

Increasing RC gives the customer more key-off energy [fewer no starts due to run down battery] and also allows the battery to be maintained at a higher state of charge on an ongoing basis [less deep cycling leading to battery wearout.]” Shaun Keogh, vice-president of business development with East Penn Canada, says that with today’s vehicles needing more power and batteries having to fit often into much tighter engine compartments, battery makers like East Penn have begun moving to new kinds of battery designs. “The consumer driving experience continues to expect increased electrical functions and features, which forces vehicle electrical systems, and the batteries that help power them, to become more durable and efficient,” he adds. “The automotive industry is on an upward trend toward the use of AGM [Absorbed Glass Mat] products as a vehicle’s original equipment battery. AGM technology adds additional durability to the battery’s design to enable it to last longer under less than ideal circumstances and demanding accessory loads. This helps accommodate complex vehicle electronics and the demand they put on the battery.” ACDelco’s Kerr says his company has also transitioned to new battery technology to meet these issues. “Most recently, ACDelco has supported the transition to AGM batteries as a replacement for OE batteries and as an upgrade for OE flooded batteries. AGM batteries can withstand many times the deep cycle events and be maintained at a lower state of charge without damage [sulfation] than a flooded battery. AGM batteries www.ssgm.com

13-11-18 7:20 AM

Batteries || have the durability to handle the frequent key-off loads that are part of the new Start-Stop fuel savings technology. Flooded batteries are not able to withstand this environment.” While today’s battery technology can provide more power and work more efficiently in harsher vehicle environments, that does not mean that they still don’t suffer failures. Technicians still need to keep in mind that batteries can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with age. East Penn Canada’s Keogh says sometimes it can be something as simple as an accidental power drain, such as leaving on the headlights or interior dome lighting and thereby draining the battery. “Draining the battery to a very low state of charge can do permanent capacity damage. “Another common cause of battery failure is putting the wrong battery in the wrong application,” he adds. “For instance, if the vehicle requires a certain amount of starting power, installing a

www.ssgm.com

p 24-26 Batteries.indd 25

battery that isn’t designed to provide that much starting power will quickly wear it out to the point of a no-start situation. Also, if the battery’s dimensions don’t align with the vehicle’s recommendations, it might not have a good fit and suffer damage from vibration or clearance issues.” “The primary cause for battery failure is wear out,” says ACDelco’s Kerr. “Wearout can occur over years of use while a battery goes through its normal life of being charged and discharged. Corrosion of the plates inside the battery leads to weakened grids and active paste falling off the plates. The battery slowly loses power and eventually is no longer strong enough to start the engine because the active paste and electrical pathways designed into the battery are no longer functioning.” One thing that can shorten the life of a battery is if a technician makes an error in charging the battery during a service visit. Domenic Ninni, senior technical specialist and industry con-

sultant with ACDelco says these are common mistakes that can be made: Incorrectly determining the battery state of health before charging — which will ultimately determine if the battery should/can be charged and will help establish the minimum recharging requirements. Incorrectly determining the battery state of charge (or discharge) before and after charging — incorrectly determining the battery is ‘fully’ charged and ready to be put into service. Limited understanding of battery and charging technology. “All of which leads to batteries being incorrectly recharged, either over-charged or under-charged,” Ninni continues. “Trying to recharge a ‘bad’ battery that is shorted/open or unable to accept a charge; recharging a battery at 100 amps for 20 minutes thinking ‘that should do it;’ or trying to let the vehicle’s alternator recharge the battery by ‘driving it.’” East Penn Canada’s Keogh adds that

|| Batteries under normal conditions, “a properly functioning alternator will recharge the battery. However, a discharged battery should be tested to make sure that the alternator wasn’t the problem in the first place. Without testing the battery, there’s no way of being sure that the battery will even take a charge. It is also possible that the vehicle’s alternator is faulty and it will not charge the battery. In that case, it wouldn’t matter how long you ran the vehicle, it would not charge properly. Regardless, testing the battery and charging it outside of the vehicle, especially after a no-start situation, is always the safest measure.” When it comes time for charging a battery ACDelco’s Ninni says making sure one has modern testing and charging equipment is a must, as many of today’s systems are designed to take the guesswork out of battery maintenance. “Since the battery charge rate, length of time required and the type of charge cycle for optimum battery charging is

determined by the manufacturer and the battery design, technicians should always consult their service information regarding the battery and system

they are working with,” Ninni adds. “This information will provide the guidelines required to accurately and effectively charge a battery.” SSGM

Identifix Technical Tip || continued from page 22 TIPM flashes the turn signal bulbs on the exterior of the vehicle. If this vehicle comes into your shop with the turn signals inoperative, diagnosis is very easy. Connect your scan tool and go to the CCN data stream. Look for the turn signal switch bussed input. When you switch the lever for a turn, the data should reflect that. If the input does not change then check the power, ground, and LIN wiring to the multifunction switch. An easy way to check the LIN wiring is to unplug the slave module and check the ‘at rest’ voltage of the LIN wire. The master should send out the 7 to 12 volt reference. If the wiring to the multi-function switch checks out good, replace the switch. If the input shows to be correct, check the bussed outputs. The CCN should be bussing a message to the TIPM on the CAN/IHS-Bus. The bussed output should show that a left or right turn signal is desired. If not, check the powers and grounds at the CCN and replace if necessary. If the inputs and outputs are correct in the CCN data stream, check the TIPM data. Look at the bussed inputs. If they show that the left or right turn is being inputted to the TIPM, then the TIPM is recognizing the message from the CCN and it should be flashing the bulbs. Make sure the wiring from the TIPM to the bulbs and the bulb grounds are good. Replace the TIPM if all the wiring is intact. Example 2: Now let’s talk about the TPMS on a LX body found on the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, and the Dodge Charger. The premium system has the ability to determine the specific tire pressure of each tire by using a tire pressure sensor/transmitter with a unique transmitter ID in each wheel, three trigger modules attached behind the splash shield near the left front, right front, and the left rear wheel, and the Wireless Control Module (WCM). The WCM is also used for the immobilizer system and the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) receiver. Each trigger module is connected to the WCM via the LIN-Bus. When the vehicle is driven, all four sensor/transwww.ssgm.com

p 22,27 Identifix Tech Tip.indd 27

mitters periodically send out signals. To determine each tire position, the WCM sends a LIN-Bus message to one of the trigger modules. The trigger module then produces a 125-kilohertz (kHz) signal that commands the pressure sensor to produce a constant signal. The WCM then determines which transmitter ID responded and tags it to a specific corner of the vehicle. This process repeats to the two remaining trigger modules. Once the WCM identifies and tags which of the three transmitter IDs respond, the fourth tire position can be determined. Remember that there is no scan tool communication with the LIN slave modules, which in this case are the trigger modules. All fault codes and data are retrieved in the master module, the WCM. Example 3: A PT Cruiser comes into your shop with the airbag light on. Scanning the airbag module reveals a B1C2F (Passenger Airbag Indicator Status Mismatch). Step 1 of the flow chart for this trouble code is to check for codes in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and diagnose all IPC codes. Upon scanning the IPC, a code U113B (Lost Communication with Switch Bank Module) was set. The switch bank module is connected to the IPC via the LIN-Bus and also houses the passenger airbag indicator bulb. Now things are starting to make sense. Following the flow chart for the U113B code is only three steps: 1)  Check the power supply to the switch bank. 2)  Check the ground to the switch bank. 3)  Check the LIN-Bus circuit between the IPC and the switch bank. If all check out OK, the vehicle needs a new switch bank module. When you change the switch bank module you are also changing the passenger airbag status bulb, which will likely repair the airbag trouble code. This is a really good example of how different systems can be tied together. As you can see, having the proper diagnostic equipment is necessary to accurately diagnose these systems, but using compatible tools makes the diagnosis fairly easy and straightforward. SSGM

|| Telematics

Telematics catches on

The technology is tried and tested — and in place for the aftermarket By Andrew Brooks

T

he tide of automotive telematics technologies continues to develop. And the automotive OEMs continue to toss out challenges for the aftermarket. The decision by German automotive giant BMW to offer new car buyers ten years of free telematics service starting with the 2014 automotive year demonstrates just how seriously the OEMs view telematics as a

hook to keep customers coming back to their service bays. BMW has actually rented a huge data warehousing and analytics facility to store all the data they’re collecting from vehicles already, and they’re taking another step by putting up their own building right next door, says Ben Johnson, director, product management for Mitchell 1. “They’re collect-

ing one terabit of data off these vehicles every day,” he says. “They’re using that information to understand their customers better and understand the types of readings coming off those vehicles when they go into shop. BMW gets it; they understand what the value of that data is. Of course they’ll use it to build better vehicles down the road, but they also want to keep that customer ‘sticky’

Telematics || to the BMW service network into the future.” Johnson chairs the recently formed Aftermarket Telematics Task Force (ATTF), which held its first meeting in July. The AATF is backed by a number of aftermarket stakeholders, including AAA, AAIA, AIA Canada, Delphi Products & Service Solutions, ETI, Robert Bosch Corp. and Drew Technologies, among others. The ATTF has been formed with the recognition that the development of automotive telematics technology presents an opportunity for the aftermarket — as much as for the OEMs — to strengthen their relationships with the automotive end user by enabling shops to communicate directly with vehicles and perform remote diagnosis and repair. The AATF has created policy, technical and marketing sub-committees to develop a broad picture of the impact of telematics development and to better understand the opportunities — or threats — it presents. “Whether telematics represents a threat or opportunity really comes down to how we react to it,” Johnson says. “We have a tendency not to be proactive, to bury our heads in the sand — but if the aftermarket doesn’t respond then it will create a problem for them.” As reported in previous issues of SSGM, to some extent the consumers have taken matters into their own hands — to the benefit of the aftermarket — by taking the telematics diagnostics reports to repair shops instead of back to the dealership service operations. Aside from that phenomenon, however, technology companies in the automotive sector have been taking up the challenge of providing the aftermarket with its own telematics solution, so that shops and repair facilities can provide customers with the same data-heavy repair profiles that the OEMs currently hope will keep drivers tied to the dealership service bays. “Telematics is definitely an opportunity for the aftermarket,” says Jim Dykstra, president of Aftermarket Telematics Technologies (ATT) a company that develops the web serwww.ssgm.com

p 28-29 Telematics.indd 29

vices for the Delphi Products and Service Solutions (DPSS) Connect Car Telematics Solution, winner of the inaugural Aftermarket Telematics Challenge held at AAPEX last year. “The technology’s been around a while, if you look at the fleet market and of course the OEMs,” Dykstra says. “With telematics in the aftermarket, it’s the business model that has to be established now, not so much the technology. And progress is definitely being made toward that business model. The technology is being sold today in shops — in my own shops today, we’re selling telematics solutions to customers and to small businesses.” Delphi’s plug-and-play telematics device coupled with ATT’s end-consumer and business software completes the telematics loop for the aftermarket, Dykstra says. “The model is going to continue to penetrate the aftermarket. The key is to get it so the aftermarket can operate the way they have operated up to now and still use telematics in that business model. The Delphi solution delivers that.” The technology needed to read diagnostic trouble codes was something that Delphi had developed over many years, says Malcolm Sissmore, North American sales director for Telematics, Tools and Training and country director for Canada at DPSS. “We asked ourselves how we could take these cool things and make them into a telematics program for the aftermarket. We had focus groups with shop owners and technicians where we asked them what they wanted from the OE side that they would like to see in the aftermarket.” Of course they definitely wanted to be able to remotely clear codes, same as the OEs do, and they also pressed for expanded capabilities such as predictive battery failure, Sissmore says.

Doing the Data

With the technology and business model in place, the key now is to gain access to the telematics data that the OEMs have every reason to want to keep to themselves. When asked if telematics is a threat or an opportunity to the aftermarket, Scott C.

Luckett, Chief Information Officer for the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) points out that the term “telematics” covers a lot of ground and it’s important to be clear which part of telematics you’re talking about. “Navigation, road-side assistance, vehicle locator and usage-based insurance pricing are fast becoming expected safety and security features in a new car,” he says. “But remote diagnostics and vehicle health management are unique in the impact they can have on the aftermarket. Left unchecked it’s a serious threat.” He believes the vehicle manufacturers are engineering a closed communication system within the vehicle that gives them a decided advantage when a fault code appears or maintenance is indicated. But, he says, “the aftermarket has a long tradition of innovation and engineering solutions that offer consumers freedom of choice in where and what service work they have performed. Telematics is merely the next frontier, albeit a high-stakes one.” Information is the heart of the matter, Luckett believes. “The aftermarket believes that consumers deserve the freedom to choose the provider of service to their vehicle,” he says. “And the availability of electronic information from the operation of the vehicle should not alter that choice. ‘It’s Your Car … Your Data’ is our mantra.” The OEMS have legitimate concerns over the safety and security of electronic systems, but the aftermarket is fully capable of ensuring proper and authenticated access to vehicle systems through agreed upon standards and best practices. “The manufacturers need the aftermarket to help deliver a satisfying customer ownership experience,” Luckett says. “Consumers who are pleased with their choices for vehicle repair and maintenance will favour that vehicle brand.” Conversely, drivers who take a vehicle to a repair shop and find that the systems are designed in such a way that the shop can’t perform the needed service are going to blame the automaker, not the shop.
