|| Tom’s Editorial
W By Tom Venetis, Editor
What people fail to understand is regular maintenance will keep a vehicle on the road for a very long time. I saw one vehicle come into a shop with over one million kilometers and it ran with the precision of a Swiss watch.
Keep Your Old Car
hen should you get rid of an old car? That is the question asked by an American company GoBankingRates.com in California. The company makes the case a person should finally ditch an old automobile when, “a consumer’s car maintenance costs exceed 50 per cent of their vehicle’s present value, then it’s time to make a purchase.” The study goes on to cite a Wall Street Journal statistic on the cost of new vehicles and current financing rates, implying if the cost or repair exceeds the monthly payments on a new or leased vehicle, including interest payments, it’s time to send the vehicle to the scrap heap Murray Voth of TACT has written about this issue in great depth in February of last year (http://www.ssgm.com/news/how-to-differentiate-yourself-in-this-industry/1001964794/). If you have forgotten that piece, read it again. What the GoBankingRates.com study does not take into account is the depreciation cost of a new vehicle over time or buying out the remainder of the vehicle cost after a lease runs out; or the cost of leasing another new vehicle if one gets tired of the current one. When you start factoring in all of those cost, keeping that older vehicle on the road becomes, in reality, the less costly option. What is often overlooked in this kind of debate is the reason people will abandon an older vehicle for a new one is they have often not maintained that vehicle well from the start. They skip oil changes, transmission inspections and regular fluid changes. They ignore small problems that can be fixed easily and inexpensively until they become something larger and more expensive; or they ignore problems altogether until those problems result in the car not starting one day. Others try to go cheap on the maintenance and repair work. They will only get some of the needed repairs done, putting off the rest; they will try to do the work themselves in a ham-fisted manner; they will demand that the cheapest, lowest-quality parts and fluids be used on the vehicle What people fail to understand is regular maintenance will keep a vehicle on the road for a very long time. I saw one vehicle come into a shop with over one million kilometers and it ran with the precision of a Swiss watch. The shop’s technician told me its owner never once skipped an oil and fluid change, did all needed repairs and followed the maintenance schedule outlined in the owner’s manual religiously. If the technician found an issue or recommended some needed work, this owner never said no. When I asked this owner if he planned to get a new car, he said he could not see the reason why. His car had run for over 20 years without a problem and he did not see how he could save any money by getting a new vehicle. He is right. Even with the low financing rates available today and the low cost of some new vehicles, it still is cheaper for this fellow to keep his 20-year-plus car on the road.

Did you realize that one simple way to maximize your mileage is to regularly change your oil? Modern life behind the wheel is full of short trips. All that starting and stopping stresses your car’s engine, which can increase the oil viscosity and lead to excessive fuel consumption. Make the change to Chevron Havoline with the Deposit Shield formulation. Havoline is proven to provide at least 10% better viscosity ®

The Ride & Drive program was designed to help improve replacement diagnosis and confidence when recommending ride control components to consumers. The program is led by several highly acclaimed automotive industry veterans and Monroe ride control training experts. The 2013 Tour schedule currently includes 45 visits to popular locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Rubber Hits the Road on the Huge Gap in Canada-U.S. Tire Prices
Auto Camping announced the appointment of Callum McLean as VP of Operations. A seasoned Operations executive with Loeb/Provigo and Canadian Tire Corporation, Callum joins the European Import Parts Specialist in order to optimize the Head Office and Distribution Center responsibilities. Prior to his 16 years in the corporate world, Callum was self-employed. As such, he understands the unique challenges of a privately owned company. With his experience, Callum will strengthen the senior management team and spearhead the advancement of Auto-Camping’s European parts and lubricants business.
Tenneco announced plans to attract nearly 10,000 attendees to its 45-stop calendar for 2013. Tenneco also plans to take the popular Monroe Ride & Drive seminar to several key industry training schools, including VISION Hi-Tech Training Expo in Kansas City, Mo., this March. Now in its 12th year, the Monroe Ride & Drive program was designed to help technicians identify the characteristics and differences of worn versus properly functioning ride control components and to recognize the impact these components have on overall vehicle safety. “We’re proud to continue to offer such a critical educational initiative to the aftermarket,” said Chuck Osgood, manager of training and sales operations, North American aftermarket, Tenneco. “It’s such a small investment of time compared to the remarkable value you’ll bring back to your customers.” The 2013 Monroe Ride & Drive program also features enhanced curriculum, including key new ride control trends, exclusive training in innovative undercar technologies and the industry’s only hands-on ride and drive training experience. The Senate Committee on Finance has confirmed the Tire Dealers Association of Canada’s (TDAC) findings that discriminatory “country pricing” by tire manufacturers is forcing tire consumers across Canada to pay anywhere from 30-50 per cent more for the same tires selling in the U.S. “Many U.S. based tire manufacturers use their supplier contracts with Canadian tire retailers to force them to buy tires wholesale directly from their Canadian affiliates rather than directly through much less costly U.S. wholesale distribution channels,” says Bob Bignell, chair of the Tire Price Disparity Committee of the Tire Dealers Association of Canada. “If a Canadian retailer buys whole-
sale tires from a U.S. wholesale distributor rather than through the manufacturer’s Canadian sales division, both the Canadian retailer and the U.S. distributor have their supplies of tires cut off by the manufacturer. In the end it’s the Canadian tire consumer who gets gouged by higher tire prices.” Notwithstanding tire manufacturer’s practices of barring cheaper U.S. wholesale tires from being imported into Canada, even Canadian made tires are more expensive in Canada than they are in the U.S. In October 2011 TDAC wrote to Finance Minister Jim Flaherty noting that, “Incredibly the wholesale prices of tires manufactured in Canada are 30 per cent cheaper in the United States than in Canada.” Bob Bignell notes that, “Given that the US and Canadian dollars have been at parity for a long time, that many tires sold at higher prices in Canada are made here and that there are no import duties or tariffs on imported tires, there is no excuse whatsoever for tire prices in Canada to be more than five per cent higher than they are in the United States. There is simply no rationale whatsoever for a tire made in Nova Scotia to cost a Nova Scotian more than an American.” Over the next year TDAC will be undertaking a number of measures to protect Canadian consumers in the next year: • A Canada-U.S. border-wide, brandby-brand tire price survey of passenger, light truck and medium-truck tire prices to highlight the worst offenders in penalizing Canadians on tire pricing; • Publishing the results of those price surveys and making those results available to consumers and Canadian regulators; • Petitioning tire manufacturers directly on behalf of Canadian tire consumers to get them to recognize the consumer impacts of the massive disparity between Canadian and US wholesale tire prices. The basic premise of TDAC position to manufacturers is that “There is no excuse for Canadians paying more for tires than Americans do.” www.ssgm.com

On January 1st, 2013, Mister Transmission informed another customer that they won their repair. The ‘Win Your Repair’ program is in its fourth year. It first began in January 2009. The contest allows all Mister Transmission customers an opportunity to enter their name for a chance to win back the cost of their repair (up to $2,000). A winner’s name is pulled every quarter. The contest is open to all Canadians, and is a National program. This years’ first winner is from Picton, Ontario. Mr. Grahame Doherty brought his vehicle into the Mister Transmission on North Front Street in Belleville, for a transmission repair. Mr. Doherty submitted his ballot online and his name was pulled for this January’s winner.
Canada Strengthens Vehicle Safety Standards
The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, announced important safety regulations requiring new vehicles in Canada to include shoulder belts in the rear centre seat. “Ensuring the safety of Canadian families is very important to our government. That’s why our government is enhancing vehicle safety standards to better protect the travelling public,” said Minister Lebel. “Making shoulder belts mandatory in the rear centre seat will reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.” The amendments to the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations include a significant update to Standard 208, Occupant Restraint Systems in Frontal Impact. In addition to introducing a mandatory requirement for lap and shoulder seat belts in the rear centre seat, these amendments will make vehicles safer by: • Requiring vehicle safety testing using female and child-sized dummies, in addition to the male testing dummies that were previously required; 10 SSGM March 2013
p 08-12 news.indd 10
• Improving air bag deployment testing; and • Increasing the vehicle test speed to better protect occupants involved in serious frontal crashes. “While Health Canada’s regulations make child car seats in Canada among the safest in world, the improved safety standards announced today represent good news for all Canadian consumers and their families,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “Canadians expect their cars to be built to the highest safety standards, so the revisions to this regulation will ensure not only enhanced safety protection for occupants in frontal crashes, it will also more closely align both Canadian and U.S. vehicle standards making advanced safety technologies more readily available and affordable,” said Mark Nantais, president of the Canadian Vehicles Manufacturers’ Association. “It is an approach which is fully consistent with the action plans under the Canada-U.S. Regulatory Cooperation Council”. “The government is to be commended for its commitment to ensuring that Canada’s regulatory framework keeps pace with industry safety practices and technologies for the benefit of Canadians, and for their commitment to aligning Canadian safety regulations with major global standards,” said David Adams, president of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada. Manufacturers have until September 1, 2015 to comply with the new requirements of Standard 208. Older vehicles will not be required to be retrofitted. These new requirements will
improve vehicle safety and bring Canadian Safety Standards more closely aligned with those of the United States. This harmonization will facilitate cross-border trade in new vehicles and encourage long-term economic growth.

Mitchell 1 announced the company’s Manager SE shop management system is now integrated with ProDemand, providing enhanced workflow and navigation between the two systems. In addition, the new version is supported on Microsoft’s Window 8. “Manager SE is our premium shop management system, designed to improve shop efficiencies at every step. Integrating with our premium information system is a natural evolution of our product lines,” said Ben Johnson, director of product management, Mitchell 1. “One of the underlying upgrades to this release is an upgraded database architecture which allows us to support this version on the new Windows 8 operating system. Our users who upgrade their PC hardware will have a seamless experience with their Manager SE system.” With a single click, Manager SE users may directly access the contents of ProDemand, including industryleading estimating, maintenance, service, fluids and TSB information. During the presentation of the Annual Supplier Awards, Dayco was presented with the shipping performance award for achieving a fill rate of over 95 per cent. “Being recognized by Uni-Select as a top performer in order fill was very rewarding and many of our Dayco Associates work very hard to make this possible,” said Bill Hay, vice-president of Sales for Dayco. “One of the most important variables in this business is being able to supply the right parts at the right time. Dayco’s performance of an over 95 per cent fill rate for 2012 is one of the many ways we as a company demonstrate our commitment to our customers”. Dayco Canada Corp. was one of only two companies recognized by Uni-Select for meeting or exceeding a fill rate of 95 per cent.
Remanufacturing Section to Return to AAPEX 2013
The Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX) Remanufacturing Section – co-hosted by the Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Association (MERA) and the Engine Rebuilders Council (ERC) – will return in 2013 to promote the environmental, economic and product performance benefits of remanufacturing in the automotive aftermarket. AAPEX is set for Tuesday, Nov. 5 through Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Sands Expo Center, in Las Vegas, Nev., and delivers new products, the latest technologies, high-powered product demos, innovative business solutions and invaluable networking opportunities to “Grow Your Business at AAPEX.” The event is jointly sponsored by the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) and the Automo-
tive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA). The AAPEX Remanufacturing Section will feature dozens of exhibits from ERC and MERA members, as well as live engine rebuilding demonstrations by Hendrick Motorsports technicians. To promote the sustainability benefits of remanufacturing, the section will be surrounded by green carpet, highlighted in green on the show map, and recognized in AAPEX communications. “Remanufactured and rebuilt engines deliver sustainability and value that not only benefits consumers, but the entire aftermarket,” said Courtney Carbone, director, AAIA member services, Engine Rebuilders Council. “ERC members are excited to return to this important section to promote these benefits in 2013.” The Remanufacturing Section sold out quickly last year, so prospective exhibitors from MERA and ERC member companies are encouraged to complete their AAPEX applications as soon as possible, with the appropriate box checked for the Remanufacturing Section. For more information, prospective exhibitors should contact Sandi Kulas, AAPEX Event Management, W.T. Glasgow, at 708-226-1300 or skulas@ wtglasgow.com.

Keeping hub assemblies in tip-top shape
D
iagnosing hub assembly wear and failure can trip anyone up. The sounds associated with wheel hub and bearing wear and tear can sound suspiciously like other problems related to the tire or even the constantvelocity (CV) joints. However, there are some audio and handling cues that can make it easier for the service technician to quickly and accurately diagnose the problem. Early signs of wear on the wheel bearings will usually be related to noise — typically a growling, humming, squeaking or even a gentle “shushing” sound. There’s a good chance drivers will ignore the persistent sound at first, but as the bearing continues to wear, the sounds get louder and more distracting. “The worse the problem is, the easier it is to find. When they wear, they’ll usually develop some play in them. You can put the car on the hoist and wiggle and find play in places where there’s not supposed to be play,” said Dwayne Venema, owner of RDV Mechanical in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories.
14 SSGM March 2013
p 14-16 Hub Feature.indd 14
Venema noted it can be easy to get fooled, and many service technicians have replaced the hub assembly on the wrong side of the vehicle, believing incorrectly they had pinpointed the problem. Today, many shops are outfitted with a Chassis Ear, an electronic device with audio transmitters that can be tie-strapped to the suspension. Each transmitter runs on a different channel, and after a quick drive, it becomes obvious which hub assembly has taken a beating. Venema said it’s a tool he wouldn’t be without, as it saves him plenty of time and makes him more accurate and efficient in diagnosing hub assembly problems. Another key sign that a hub assembly is failing is a feeling of misalignment while cornering, said Dean Weber, vice-president of sales and marketing at Proforce Automotive in Toronto. Weber said it can feel like the wheel is misaligned or there’s a “jerky” feeling in the steering. Other signs of pending failure include abnormal or uneven tire wear, and if the ABS light is displayed.

“The tech can diagnose this by jacking up the car and wiggle each wheel with your hands. If the wheel gives too much, the bearings may be loose or need replacement,” Weber said. From inside the car, it can be difficult to determine the problem, said Rick Domin, senior product analyst at The Timken Company. “The problem is when you’re inside the vehicle and you hear one of these noises, it is sometimes difficult to identify which side it’s coming from,” Domin explained. “It tends to resonate through the car instead of being obvious. That’s where there’s some checking you can do — getting the wheel off, checking the hub assembly for hand play, which is inand-out movement, looking for grease being expelled from the hub assembly itself, whether it’s up near the CV joint or in between where the rotor and the hub flange would be. If you see excessive amounts of grease, that’s an indication that something is wrong. And then the in-and-out play, the clearance in the hub assembly, generally if it’s over four-thousandths of an inch, you want to replace the hub assembly.” Since the automotive industry made the switch to front-wheel drive two decades ago, hub and bearing assemblies have essentially become mostly unserviceable. Aside from automotive models at least 20 years old (or 10 years in the case of light trucks), there is rarely a need to disassemble the wheel bearing, clean out the assembly, repack it with grease and then reinstall. That’s still common in commercial vehicles, but for automotive technicians, it may only be necessary to do a repack a few times per year — specifically when working on older model vehicles. Asking customers pointed questions to unveil these problems will save service technicians time in finding the problem. Although there’s no average lifespan www.ssgm.com

Hub Feature || for a wheel hub assembly, road conditions and extreme temperatures can certainly shorten its lifespan. Heat is an assembly’s biggest enemy because it can deteriorate the seal faster, allowing for contamination of the internal lubricant, said Domin. Extreme temperatures will wear out the seals, but that can be accelerated by bad wheel callipers or brake failure. Moisture in the assembly will also cause unnecessary wear. Road conditions can also have a serious impact on an assembly’s life. Rough rural roads, abrasives such as sand and salt on roadways, and impact damage from potholes and collisions will also contribute to the wear and eventual failure of a hub assembly, said Matt Bischof, product manager for FAG hubs and wheels at The Schaef-
fler Group. Once the diagnostic has been completed and the problematic hub assembly identified, removing and replacing the part isn’t difficult, but Bischof warned to ensure the proper torque is used when bolting on the new assembly. Provided the manufacturer’s torque specifications are used in putting the bolts back in, the service technician won’t cause damage. “There are some things when you’re
Proforce hub bearings come with preset internal clearance and are heat-treated for longer life.
Hub Bearing Diagnosis And Service Tips • Axle nut must be properly torqued to assure long service life of the hub assembly. • Most manufacturers do not recommend reusing a self locking nut due to the possibility of the nut backing off in service. • The hammer action of an impact wrench can cause internal damage to hub assembly raceways and bearings from shock. • Splines, threads and steering knuckle mounting area must be clean and rust free to assure that the new assembly is not damaged during installation. • A worn hub assembly normally exhibits a roaring noise when turning although some will have the noise constantly during vehicle operation. A wireless listening device is very helpful. • Although most technicians will recommend replacement of a hub assembly when any looseness is found, some assemblies may exhibit a very small amount of clearance when checking by moving the tire assembly at 12 and 6 o’clock. Refer to the vehicle manufacturers guidelines for specific inspection procedures. www.ssgm.com

|| Hub Feature changing them that you have to do. The most important is the proper torque of the axle part,” Timken’s Domin said. “That will ensure the longest life. Inadequate or improper torque is the number one cause of installation error. Another part of the hub that may not seem as critical but is, is actually the real stud torque. That won’t necessarily affect the bearings themselves as much as brake pedal pulsation, rotor run-out and abnormal brake failure.” While hub and bearing assemblies are replacement parts, that doesn’t mean inspecting the assemblies can’t be slotted into a regular vehcile maintenance check. In fact, it is quite the opposite.
“It’s basically down to checking them periodically or if there’s a complaint of noise by a customer, that would be cause to check it,” said Schaeffler’s Bischof. According to Domin, every little bit counts when ensuring a long life for a hub and bearing assembly. “Good rubber and the only reason
I say that is tire imbalance issues or misalignment issues, meaning a good front end. Ball joints, tie rod ends and good rubber on the road will definitely help improve the life, where those issues could decrease the life if they’re allowed to come out of adjustment,” Domin said. “But as far as an individual wanting to maintain their hub assembly, the beauty of these is that they are self-contained, they’re pre-greased, pre-sealed and pre-set from the factory. That means they’re easy to install and there’s no maintenance. But that’s also the downfall, that there’s no maintenance. You can’t clean them up, check them over and put them back together.” SSGM
Symptoms of a Worn Wheel Hub Bearing Signs of a worn wheel hub bearing vary in severity. Some may be difficult to detect, leading to damage before corrective action can be taken. The time frame in which damage occurs is linked to driving conditions and/or the mechanical practices that were followed at installation. Noise is a classic sign of a bad wheel bearing or wheel hub bearing. Here are some indicators of a worn wheel hub bearing or other wheel-end damage: • Snapping, clicking or popping. This can indicate a worn or damaged outer CV-joint. However, it also can be related to excessive bearing endplay, usually associated with inadequate clamping. This noise is typically heard when cornering or making sharp turns. • Grinding when the vehicle is in motion. Typically, this means there is mechanical damage in a wheelend system. Related to a bearing, it means a loss of integrity such as roller or raceway damage. The noise is normally heard when turning or when there is a shift in load. • Knocking or clunking. This can signal excessive play in the CV-joints or U-joints. It also can be caused by excessive backlash in the differential gears. This is not generally associated with bearings and is normally heard either when shifting from changing directions, such as from forward to reverse or transitioning from accelerating to coasting. • Humming, rumbling or growling. These noises are normally associated with tire, electrical or drivetrain components. If bearing-related, the noise or vibration is present when drivingin a straight line, but intensifies when turning the steering wheel slightly to the left or right. Typically, the side opposite the rumbling is the defective side. • Wheel vibration and/or wobble. This is generally associated with a damaged or worn tire, wheel or suspension component or severe chassis misalignment. When related to the hub or bearing, this normally indicates the loss of clamp or a bearing with extreme mechanical damage. It also can occur when lug nuts are not properly torqued. 16 SSGM March 2013
p 14-16 Hub Feature.indd 16
• Shudder, shimmy or vibration at a constant speed. This is normally associated with worn or damaged suspension components or tires that are out-of-balance or out-of-round. It is not normally indicative of hub or bearing damage. • Abnormal side pull when brakes are applied. This is normally indicative of a defective caliper or equalizer, but it also can be a sign of worn brakes or rotors. However, severe looseness related to a bearing can also cause excessive runout, which may cause the brakes to pulsate or pull. The most common cause is a warped rotor due to the caliper not retracting. • Uneven rotor or brake pad wear. This is normally indicative of a bad caliper and/or a bad equalizer, which is not bearing-related. Severe looseness related to a worn or damaged bearing can cause excessive runout, which can cause uneven wear on the brake pads and/or rotor. The most common cause is a warped rotor due to the caliper not retracting. • Abnormal or uneven tire wear. There are many causes of abnormal tire wear. The most common are worn or damaged suspension components, misalignment, improper inflation or tire selection. While extreme bearing wear or looseness can cause abnormal tire wear, it is typically related to other failure modes. • ABS failure, which could be internal or external to the bearing or hub bearing assembly. In extreme cases, internal and external sensors can be damaged from excessive movement caused by too much end-play. This indicates a lack or loss of bearing clamp. This normally results from severe mechanical break up or damage. (Additionally, in designs where the sensor is mounted externally, sensor damage can result from corrosion, stones and other hazards.) Looking for belt cracks isn’t enough for good maintenance Simple tools, apps can now make inspecting By Chris Talbot worn belts faster, more accurate
W
ith changes in the manufacturing of belts in the last decade, the old way of checking for engine belt wear is no longer enough to give an indication of a belt’s longevity or imminent demise. Instead, a new – and free – tool is needed, and the few minutes it takes to use wear gauges will save a lot of headaches for customers later on. Although engine physics haven’t changed, the parts certainly have – and in some cases, that’s creating difficulties for technicians who are used to doing maintenance checks a certain way, said Robert Christy, director of marketing at Dayco Products. Checking for cracks on belts is no longer sufficient, as the rubber material has changed – and so too have belt lifespans. “What has changed is with the cars that are coming into that service interval, their belts were made with a different rubber compound,” Christy explained. “The old rubber compound used to be neoprene, which cracked. Since around 2000, the original equipment manufacturers have been using a rubber compound called EPDM for belts, and this compound is a stiffer compound and allows belts to obviously last longer, but they wear differently. They don’t crack. They’re resistant to crack. What they do is they lose rubber material almost like a tire.” According to Christy, Dayco and others are still in evangelist mode when it comes to wear checks on maintenance belts. Since serpentine belts started becoming the norm a few years

ago, each manufacturer has begun supplying garage owners and their service technicians with free wear gauge tools. They’re frequently handed out at trade shows. Dayco calls its tool the aWEARness Belt Gauge. Small enough to fit in a pocket for easy access, the gauge is outfitted with three measurement indicators for checking rib wear, rib profile and belt cracks. When using the rib wear indicator, the top of the bar will be higher than the tops of the rib tips, but if it’s lower, then the belt is worn. Using the rib profile indicator, a new belt will show neither side nor flank clearance on the ribs, but on a worn belt, the indicator will bottom out so that voids appear on the flanks of the ribs. With the window, take care to look for cracks; and should four or more cracks fit within the small window, then the

belt is worn and should be replaced. Other belt gauges work in a similar manner. “A serpentine belt has a V-profile on all the ribs, and when it wears, that V turns into a U. That means those ribs get thinner. They lose rubber material,” Christy said. It’s a quick process to check the belt ribs using a gauge and can easily fit into any maintenance check process. Christy said many technicians are still unaware they need to look for more than cracks, though. Outside of regular maintenance, there are a few indications something
It is all about educating the customer. is wrong with the belt. Should the belt be worn, it can flip, make noise and even cause other components like the alternator to malfunction. Should a belt break, the automobile is going to be dead on the road; and chances are, the customer is going to lay blame on the service technicians they go to for regular maintenance. A quick check during every maintenance procedure can provide prior warning of a worn belt before it breaks. According to research data from the American Aftermarket Industry
The Gates Parts Image Capture (PIC) Gauge is an easyto-use smartphone app that evaluates belt wear. PIC Gauge is designed for use by professional technicians and service writers to more-accurately diagnose serpentine belt wear. www.ssgm.com

Association (AAIA), one in five automobiles on the road is being operated with a worn belt. The main cause of belt issues is misalignment. Any misalignment over 1.5 degrees will cause unnecessary wear and lead to a break faster than usual. Should it be misaligned by 2.5 degrees or greater, the belt can flip right off the drive. The other major cause is incorrect tension. One of the first indications of a belt problem drivers often notice is noise that slowly increased in volume. A slight misalignment will be audible as chirps or squeals, but sound alone isn’t enough to determine the problem. Christy offered an easy way to check. While the engine is running, spray the ribs with water. If the noise disappears, it’s a misalignment problem. If it gets louder, it’s a tension problem. “It’s a wear item like anything else. The belt will wear out quicker if you

have any issues with the system, like a worn-out tensioner or any misalignment. It will destroy a belt instantly,” Christy said. At the same time, another important – and quick – maintenance check a service technician can make to keep a vehicle running in tip-top shape is on the hose. A broken hose can also be a major problem for drivers. Unlike belts, hoses haven’t changed in some time, so the same procedures used for years still apply. Signs of wear can be found by taking a few minutes to check the hoses. A sure sign of trouble is moisture or dripping around the hose clamps or connections. Although it could be the clamps are not tight enough (a problem easily solved), it could be a sign of degradation of the internal rubber of the hose. “Hoses naturally have a lifespan due to the ozone in the air of somewhere around 10 years when they start to show external signs of breaking down,” said Ronald Tremblay, owner/operator of The Garage Auto Pro in Vancouver. “The rubber starts to get weak. But the inside, it can have a shorter life if the anti-freeze or coolant mixture is not of the correct pH balance, which can easily happen to it after a few years. Coolant flushes and exchanging the fluids or at least correcting the pH balance ... inspecting that and making sure it’s in good shape all the time, the hoses can last up to 10 years or more.” Even if everything looks in good shape, it’s a good idea to do a regular hose check. Although external rubber may look fine, it’s possible the internal rubber is breaking down. To check for wear, grab the hose and squeeze it as if testing a loaf of bread. If there’s cracking, whether through feel or sound, the hose is not in good shape. A hose should remain supple and soft, Tremblay explained. Although belts are most likely to become worn after six years, hoses should last up to a decade before signs of wear become evident. Taking a few minutes during any inspection or work on a vehicle can alert technicians of belt or hose wear before it becomes a problem for the customer. SSGM March 2013 SSGM 19

Delphi’s Chris Bahlam, director of service operations, says his company is also taking a lead from this consumer electronics trend and adding not just touch and wireless capabilities to its set of scan tools, but also making its tools link directly to a wide range of web-
based service and repair databases. The goal is to make repair and maintenance faster for technicians. With the ubiquity of smart devices and phones, it is only a matter of time before shop owners and technicians begin to see diagnostic and reprogramming technologies become platform agnostic, where any handheld device with web and Wi-Fi connectivity can become a powerful tool for vehicle repair and maintenance. Bruce Ruhf, director of operations and marketing with Ross-Tech, says his company is already moving down that path with its VCDS product.
The VCDS Mobile, which technicians can see a preview of at http:// www.ross-tech.com/vcds-mobile/index. html, is a platform-independent solution that will let any mobile device become a diagnostic tool for VW and Audi vehicles. “It is basically a device that will talk with any computer platform that has Wi-Fi and a web browser,” Ruhf says. “(Technicians) will be able to do such things as pull fault-code information and live measuring values … and it will have more advanced functions and higher-level diagnostic functions.” SSGM

Today’s vehicles are becoming more and more complex to service. Proper procedures are very important to follow when making repairs to today’s vehicles. This is especially true when working on Infiniti and Nissan dual mass flywheels. The vehicles listed above have a crankshaft tone ring built into the flywheel. The dual mass flywheel is not indexed on the crankshaft and can be installed different ways. When installed incorrectly, the vehicle may not start, have a check engine light, and the engine will not rev past 2000 RPM. When removing a dual mass flywheel from the vehicles listed above it is recommended to make your own indexing marks on the flywheel and crankshaft. When installing the new flywheel transfer your marks from the old flywheel to the new flywheel to ease installation and assure proper indexing. If you have already removed the flywheel and did not make any indexing marks, follow this procedure for proper installation:
Figure 2. Dual Mass Flywheel, Rear Side.
1. With the flywheel removed look for the alignment dowel pin hole on the end of the crankshaft. 2. On the new flywheel find the same alignment dowel pin hole. This can be done by finding the locating hole and notch on the front side of the flywheel.(see diagram below) When you have located the notch and hole on the front side, Flip the flywheel over and find the same hole that goes all the way through the back side. Then look at the diagram below and find the dowel pin hole. 3. When both have been located align the two holes and torque the flywheel to the proper specifications. 4. See diagram below to aid in locating the correct dowel pin holes.

Some Light
Amidst the Gloom Recent studies from Canada, U.S. point to positive trends for the North American Aftermarket By Tom Venetis, Editor
S
ometimes it is hard to know what to make of the news. One day there are reports of positive job growth, a recovering stock market and a growing optimism amongst North American consumers. Wait a few days and another report suggests job growth is sluggish, the stock market tanks on some bit of financial news and consumers are a miserable lot, seeing gloom and despair on the horizon. It is enough to make anyone in the aftermarket wonder what exactly is going on. While the last few years have been difficult ones for the aftermarket parts and service provider industry, recent market studies out of Canada and the United States point to a more positive picture for the industry. The 2012 Outlook Study from the Automotive Industries Association (AIA) of Canada paints a generally positive picture for the aftermarket. In Canada, people are holding onto their vehicles longer with the average age of light vehicles on the road averaging around 9.26 years. Correspondingly, the number of kilometres on those vehicles is increasing. The study found the number of kilometres driven going up by 0.9 per cent per year and it now sits around 21,995 kilometres. These figures are mirrored in the United States. The NPD Group’s Car Care Track survey found in 2011 59 per cent of people reported they owned a car that was eight years old or older, up from 51 per cent in 2007. The U.S.-based R.L. Polk & Co. finds similar ownership trends with average vehicle age on the roads being 10 years and up in their studies. One interesting statistic is while there has been a slow increase in the number of new vehicle purchases over the last several years the rate is much slower than before this current recession. Polk predicts the year-over-year uptick seen at the beginning of this year is not likely to continue into the

rest of 2013. In fact, when groups like AIA Canada, Polk and others look at what people are actually purchasing, it is most likely a used vehicle rather than a new one. When the respected analysis group DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. took an in-depth look at consumer behaviour around vehicle purchases, ownership and maintenance, the majority of the 2,500 light vehicle owners surveyed — 51.2 per cent to be exact — said the vehicle they purchased in 2010 was used. New vehicle sales accounted for only 43.5 per cent. Digging a little more into the data, DesRosiers finds a little over 25 per cent say they don’t have any plans on buying another vehicle to replace the one they already have. So what does this mean for the aftermarket, both to those who sell parts and those who install them: sim-

ply, owners of older vehicles are going to be spending money to keep those vehicles on the road. While some may have postponed work due to economic circumstances, vehicle maintenance and repair cannot be put off forever. There are several categories of parts sales and service that are likely going to be profit centres for this year. One will be undercar, specifically brakes, shocks and struts. DesRosiers finds independent repair shops in Canada capture the near majority of full-service brake repair work largely because they are able to capture and then retain a large portion of the older vehicle market. In terms of shocks and struts, independents once again lead the way in capturing this part of the business with nearly 60 per cent of people who owned older vehicles preferring to take the work to an independent service operation. www.ssgm.com

The same is true for work involving electrical and ignition systems and powertrain. The NPD Group found similar trends for the United States, as the shift to older vehicles is translating into steady, rising sale in application parts, such as shocks and struts. According to The NPD Group, sales of parts for suspension, steering and application electrical grew by six per cent. One area that should be of particular interest to parts suppliers and installers is how changing demographics will impact the aftermarket. Canada and the United States are experiencing profound demographic shifts with increasing immigration. The NPD Group put out a study looking at the aftermarket opportunities in the Hispanic market. With the Hispanic population nearly doubling by 2050 in the U.S. The NPD Group finds for Hispanic vehicle owners, known and respected www.ssgm.com
p 31-33 Market Report.indd 33
aftermarket brands are important to them when it comes to making a buying decision. Hispanic vehicle owner also demand employees at independent shops and front-counter staff at parts suppliers have a high-degree of product knowledge and value developing strong personal relationships with those they do business with. This translates into long-term business for those parts sellers and installers that provide front-line staff that can speak Spanish and display strong product knowledge. While there does not seem to be a comparable study of Canada’s changing demographics and its impact on the aftermarket, one expects our changing demographics will most certainly have an impact on the aftermarket. Parts suppliers and installers who understand what those changes mean will see continuing success in the future. SSGM
