WANDERLUST! This special travel edition of STYL Magazine finds our models, editor and photographers all around the virtual globe. The Mitteleuropaische Reiseburo (Travel Bureau) in 1920s Berlin, is a business that I started on the old test sim. One afternoon while drinking schnapps in Der Keller with Frau Jo Yardley the idea for a place inspired by the golden age of travel came to me. With Jo’s support I created the space to look like travelers were already on their way. For this special edition we traveled by automobile, by train, aboard oceanliners, in zeppelins, and now too on aeroplanes. We crossed sim boundaries in hopes of finding destinations worthy enough to recommend. 1.
Want to know what to wear to a lunch with Hemingway in Arkansas, to an oasis Casbah, or while flying solo across the Atlantic? We’ve pulled together fashions from all over Second Life. Remember too that not all fraulein are full-time coquettes; some now are adventurers and consider themselves garconnes! Berlin remains one of the few world class cities in Second Life, uber modern with its telephones, and radios. How easy for Berliners to forget that not all the world has kept pace with change the way that they have. America has kept pace and what could be more modern than Seraph City, an architectural wonder with towering skyscrapers that soar above the cloudline. It is in a word, breathtaking. There is enormous charm and untold mystery in ancient places like Kingdom of Sand, and now too Venexia, a new build inspired by Venice. If you yearn to sunbathe or to see the most exquisite shorelines and waterfalls in SL, then Las Lagunas sim is the supreme tropical resort sim. So, here’s to wanderlust - ours and we do hope, yours! 2.

his exhibition is the outcome of my dual passions, travel through time and travel through spaces. I wanted to catch details coming from a time when luxury, glamour, and good taste were the keywords in fashion, building, music, art and cinema. A time full of diversity and contrasts. In a world where distances are always shorter, thanks to speedy media, I traveled through wonderful places, catching a special floor like the one I photographed in Curio, a great door decoration in Seraph City, an exciting ballroom in 1920s Berlin, great furniture and decor in Stylissimo... A famous italian writer, Italo Calvino, wrote in one of his novels: “the pen goes through the sheet leaded by the same push that makes you run through the streets; as you don’t plan 58.
what you’ll write in the next line, you don’t know if, turning a corner, you might meet a flaming dragon, a barbarian crowd, or a new love”. 59.
traveling, writing, taking photographs they are quite similar adventures; they give us a chance at discovery if we are able to feel the spirit of the words, of the places, of the objects and of the women and men who stay behind them. Objects, hair, jewels, gloves, stockings, or hands, eyes, arms and legs.... Blurred, coarse-grained, faded... images coming from the past, bearing all the scars of the elapsed time. Fragments from a past reality we imagine are made of luxury, taste and glamour. In visiting times past, we can forget the blood and the pain of those days, in a way that we can’t do with our present time. Illusions and dreams are our food here in SL, and filtering the past can be a useful way to learn good things from bygone eras and keep them with us. 60.

So, I wanted to show only fragments: meaningful details that give meaning to a fragmented and selected memory. Actually, elegance and fascination often lay in details... These pictures are dedicated to all women who made great the past century by their taste and their intelligence: from Marlene Dietrich to Virginia Woolf, from Josephine Baker to Lillian Hellman. They and many others inspired me, and SL allowed me to wear their dresses and to live in their places.

What is the right way to end a love affair? My mother says that it should be done in person, and that even a letter in one’s own hand expressing regrets is not sufficient comfort to the party whose feelings are likely to suffer the pangs of a loss. You see a very dear friend of my mother’s suffered greatly when her husband of more than a year abandoned her. She wrote to him daily but never a word in return. Mother said that the absent husband had a secret love nest somewhere in the city and that the poor wife stumbled upon it by accident one day, and in distress attempted suicide. I am inclined to agree with your mother. Ask yourself the reason you would not want to break off a love affair in person. Most likely the answer is because it causes the
continued from page 73. person breaking it off, shame, a feeling of discomfort, guilt. These are all reasons that show one’s concern is only about one’s self. Going to the person face-to-face and sitting down with them may feel a little uncomfortable, yes. And maybe downright awful. But in the long run you will be ensuring less pain is caused to the person you are letting go. And although they may be upset about the news, they will see that at least you are an honest and caring person. Someone who has integrity and the bravery to do what they know is right. The very fact that you need to ask this question, leads me to believe you already know the answer. All relationship problems are best dealt with privately, tactfully, and face-to-face. A few moments of your feeling uneasy could mean you’ve spared someone you once cared for a prolonged heartbreak. And after all the moments you have shared together, don’t you at least owe them that? Dear Hildy: I don’t want to marry, but my parents insist that I must. You see they have this silly old idea that the best thing for a girl is to have a husband and lots of children. The world is a very big place, and why don’t they at least want to hear about what I want? My friend Gisela’s sister is in secretarial school and goes to trade shows. When I told my father about this his face turned bright red and mother had to bring him a Schnapps. It’s not like I want to do something disreputable like being a showgirl! It never hurts to have skills. What would happen if you one day you did marry and something happened to your husband? How would you live then if you don’t have him there to support you? Maybe bring that up to your parents. I say pursue your dreams as long as they are respectable ones. But be kind to your parents about it. They are from an older generation and change like this can be difficult for them. Ease them into it. I also suggest that you don’t completely rule out love and marriage either. They can be wonderful and beautiful things in your life. Just don’t let that be your sole purpose for living. 75.

It is only fitting that we recognize an archaeologist, a linguist and the greatest woman mountaineer of her age. And in Baghdad in 1921 she drew the boundaries of the country that became Iraq. She more than held her own as the only woman in a sea of important men. continued page 87 85.

As one of Oxford’s most brilliant students, it is not surprising that her eventual diplomatic career is distinguished by the high value placed on her counsel by none other than T.E. Lawrence, Winston Churchill, and the founder of Saudi Arabia, Abdul Aziz ibn Saud. Before her diplomatic career began she travelled widely and published her writing about these trips. In “The Desert and the Sown” (originally published by William Heinemann in 1907), her writing style is lyrical, and her enthusiasm for the places she visits sweeps the reader along as in the excerpt from the book reprinted here. Gertrude Bell lived her life with great style and even greater substance. 87.

Accessories of the 1920s OBJECTS: Cigarette-holder, strings of pearls, large cocktail rings, jewelry, handbags, compact, gloves, cigarettecase and boa or fan made of plume feathers., HATS: Cloche hats worn low over the brow, and for evening, turbans, silk head scarves tied with ends worn to one side, headbands embellished with embroidery, beadwork, and feather plumes. Hats with wide elliptical brims at the front and side, are often brimless at the nape of the neck. MAKE-UP: Cosmetics are now popular: Red lipstick for the mouth, powder and rouge (a round splodge). Eyebrows are picked and a black line is drawn, green or blue eye-shadow, black eyeliner and fake eyelashes with a diamond are used. 93.
