hese are the 5 tips on how to wear the vintage style successfully, and to make an enviable fashion statement as a classy dresser. 1) Grandma’s outwardly old-fashioned 1930’s flapper dress has great potentials. If it’s too large around the bust but fits perfectly at the waist, then it can be altered to fit. There’s no point worrying about adjustments or alterations decreasing vintage clothes values. It will be useless to if it can’t be worn, so how valuable can it be unaltered? It’s either it ends up crammed away somewhere, or taken to a dressmaker to

have it altered to fit. Then it can be flaunted as classic fashion! And if it’s too small and impossible to button or zip up without it ripping at the seams, and then a slimming corset will do the trick! 2) Look out for the plain pieces of vintage style clothing. Vintage fashion such as slacks, pencil skirts, dresses and jackets. It is better if these clothing items are in solid or neutral tones or color. Once neutral, they will work well with trendy and modern blouses, tops and vintage inspired fashion shoes. And with a stylish vintage pair of brown slacks or a

black A-line skirt, you can wear these several times a week with different chic tops and blouses or shirts. You are even allowed to throw in a unique vintage fashion ladies tie. 3) When shopping around online or offline, invest in classic vintage style clothing and accessorize or in vintage inspired clothing. Some clothing and great accessories will never go out of fashion, always coming back with just the slightest variations. Investing in a great vintage leather handbag in a neutral colour, a cameo necklace, or a black wool suit is a great way to start your collection

of vintage style clothing and accessories. 4) In the 60’s and the 70’s, polyester cloth was the fashionable fabrics for clothes, and in the 1980s, rayon was the rave! When looking out for vintage style clothing, avoid these fabrics as they come out looking dated and unfashionable! They have no co-relation with the term ‘chic’. So it’s much better and wiser to consider natural textiles such as cotton, silk, or wool. You can successfully go with traditional textile patterns as textile patterns

come and go. Look for vintage designer fashion clothing made with timeless fabric patterns such as hounds-tooth, plaid, and pinstripes. Remember to collect or purchase vibrant and bold colors, styles and patterns for your vintage accessories. 5) It’s a BIG NO wear vintage fashion from head to toe, but make certain you combine modern 21st century clothes and accessories with your vintage style clothing to avoid looking like you are attending a fancy dress party! You don’t have to re-live the past

in all totality. For a better and chic look, pin a rhinestone flower brooch or a beautiful cameo brooch on a neutral coloured jacket, or you can wear a vintage style silk flower scarf with a crisp white shirt. A vintage tie-neck blouse looks great over a pair of skinny jeans and you can enhance a new ‘today’s’ dress with vintage or antique costume jewelry.

Because We Love Vintage By. Carla meneses

ollowing the fashionable trend of vintage style clothing and carrying it off successfully doesn’t necessarily require the creativity of a top fashion designer. If you want to look stylish and different, trendy and fashionably vintage, you need to know how to incorporate vintage style clothing into your existing wardrobe, and have the knack of accessorizing your fashion style. Taking this approach to adopting a classic fashion signature is not hard, and it can be budget friendly too, saving you money. To achieve the vintage style, you’ll need a little creativity, an open mind and just a bit fashion sense. And if you are lucky to have very elderly family members still

around or recently passed on, rummage through their personal stuff if you can get access to them, and discover some amazing finds of vintage clothing or other classic collectibles to start a collection you may have acquired.

VINTAGE FASHION TREND By LALA

F

ashion has a way of repeating itself this is why some of the clothes we wear today can be described as vintage. Runways are filled with fashion items that have made a strong comeback and that are considered trendy once more. Vintage fashion though does not mean that designers have pulled out clothes from storage, washed and ironed them. But they have adapted the old fashion trends to the modern ones and have created new looks. A few years back, those than wore clothes from previous fashion collections were considered cheap and with no sense of style. However, things changed when celebrities started to appear on the red carpet and to various social events wearing items from the top designer’s fashion collections. One can say that fashion stylists are the ones responsible for this trend that has taken over almost all of us. The stylists are always looking to create new outfits for the celebrity that they are working for so in this respect they started to look through second hand clothing stores where the possibilities where endless. Celebrities began to be so fond of this fashion trend that they were raiding the sores all on their own at one point. And as such many fashionistas started to copy this style and began going to garage sales and vintage clothing stores to pick up the best outfits. There have been many fashion trends that have re-emerged on the market but one of the most interesting of them was the big shoulder pads. Stars like Kate Moss have

8

started to wear them at celebrity events thus creating a trend. Some of the other trends that have come back to haunt us are: the animal prints, the bold messages, the costume jewelry and last but not least the trendy handbags. Each of us can create a fashion trend of our own, all we have to do is to figure out what are the best fashion accessories that look good on us. Being our own personal stylist is not a hard thing to do, all we have to make sure off is that we are looking in the right places for the right clothes!

e must remember that all these twentieth century fashion items were carefully and intricately crafted with style, so we should find productive ways to bring them back to life. We can stylishly incorporate vintage style clothing and accessorizing into our twenty first century lives, wardrobes and fashion tastes. This can be referred to as an ‘indulgence in amassing the vintage’. And the aim of this indulgence is to transform all vintage collections into classic wears for the day or night. Vintage Accessories are decorative items from the past that supplement your garment; such as jewellery, gloves, handbags, hats, belts, scarves, watches, sunglasses, pins, stockings, bow ties, leg warmers, leggings, neckties, suspenders, and tights produced between 1920s and 1990s. Vintage accessories add style, colour and class to your outfit, and create a certain look, at the same time they may also have practical functions. Some accessories such as muffs or parasols you can find only in vintage shops, they are not often produced not any more. You can easily find other vintage accessories of a variety prices, styles, materials and

age in vintage shops and markets. Moreover, accessories are something you can easily buy online: it’s safer than buying cloths for example; you don’t necessarily have to try it to make sure that it’s the right size. • old or second hand clothing that is 20 or more years old • and there are brand new clothing from twentieth century — vintage clothing, never worn, spent all those years in warehouses • and there is vintage inspired clothing — which is designed accordingly to the retro style, but produced only now, though that’s another story

ÂŹFashion Repeats Itself By AYA

ashion has positively come elongated way from the top hats and petticoats era of the past. Clothes today have become a great and modern combination of styles and attitude. One may assume that because of the advancement and development that we have made in technology and in the part of clothing, we will no longer look back at our past. Veracity, as always, has a way of denying what we all think. In today’s generation, we all see a recovery and reappearance of popular fashion styles from our ancestors. It seems that old school fashion is returning to its track. What does old school fashion really mean? It constitutes of

fashion impending from 1970s-1980s. Previous school fashion is being brought back by fashion cognisant young adults and teenagers today. Old school fashion is not only resolute and considered by the clothes. Old school fashion is marked in accessories, hairstyles and even in the manner of the youth today. There are many reasons why youth today are bringing back old school fashion: 1.This attraction with the past has started with television. Youth have been exposed so much to old school fashion in

other kind of media. Well, the media certainly brought about the old school fashion revival. It was the spark that created the fire. 2. People like old school fashion. It looks firstclass and elegant, it helps reconnect with our past which was not as difficult and complex as the world today. Old school fashion is all the time acquiring recognition is that once it was reintroduced or reconstructed into the society; people institute that they really liked it. 3.It is so sexy. Old school fashion was intended to flaunt the beauty our body. Fitted

THE WAY IT WAS, THE WAY IT IS by Mischa Cordero

no cell phone and internet at hand. Things may have been better with the new techies, but it made life more complicated. She was fond of taking naps in mid afternoon, going to sleep at 9pm and waking up at 6am. That was one hell of a life. Therefore, I go on with this experiment. I challenged myself to do the same routine my grandma does during her genre. I was ready to go to bed at 8:30 pm, not even trying to open my laptop or look at my cell phone. Forty minutes had passed and I am still awake, so I started humming a song, I was not contented and so I sang my lungs out. I suddenly stopped singing and realized that this is not going to work out. I give up; this is not my thing at all.

rowsing the internet is one hobby I actually hate doing the most, though I do it like 15 hours a day. However, I have no choice, what else can I do than peep into others’ facebook profiles or watch amateur videos in YouTube. Then I thought, have I wasted hours of my life in doing such? Therefore, me being the thrillseeker and adventurous one, I did a little experiment on myself.

The evolution of our technology and the fast phased life that we are all getting used to will now forever be like this. This may sound ironic since I have not experienced the simplest life that people have years ago, but, I actually miss it. It will always keep me wondering life with what ifs. I have been tired of always being in a hurry and trying to meet the deadliest deadlines and the pressure of life that well of course, I can never change. I would have actually loved a glimpse of how uncomplicated life was, and how peaceful things were.

As my grandma narrates her life story, there is always a mention of how simple life was with

everal people think that wearing vintage clothes requires courage. Why should we rummage in our Granny’s wardrobe to find pieces to create new outfits? Indeed embracing the vintage style is a real challenge especially if you want to do it properly. Luckily we have stylists who’ll assist you in looking remarkably wearing these classic fashion pieces. Those who embrace this style should be prepared for amazed eyes. This look must fit your personality; it’s an issue of attitude. Still if you succeed in including vintage items into your daily looks, you’ll get original and in the same time extremely stylish outfits. For a pleasant and successful start, try to make small changes into your wardrobe. Professionals recommend you to avoid wearing vintage clothes from top to bottom. You don’t want to look like stepping out from a time machine. However you can associate your personal style with some real chic accessories, like bags, belts or even

scarves. Later, you can restyle your clothes into contemporary styles. It will still keep its vintage quality. Choosing the best pieces is the real art. You don’t have to adopt complete outfits, there are so many clothes and accessories you can select from. A contemporary and vintage combo can look very stylish. Jeans or other pants paired with bow tie blouse, or a vintage dress with a modern leather belt can be a good option. Pair these pieces correctly; a bright colored dress can be successfully worn with a pair of gladiator sandals. Focus on the overall image; adopt a definite style for a certain event. You’ll get tired if you wear it all the time. Know the typical characteristics of the style, you can visit several blogs and read articles to clarify them. Get inspiration from fashion icons and those who are already ‘pros’ in vintage fashion. If you don’t want to wear used clothes, you can find new ones with vintage influences. There are several fab-

rics, patterns and cuts that define certain retro styles, like denim, checkers, floral, polka dots, lace, ribbons and bows, flare armed tops, high-waist, and ruffles. Look at old photos and see what you would like to have in your outfits. Lastly take the final step and start purchasing or collecting clothes and accessories. Perhaps this is the most exciting process. Whether you have them from older generations or from online vintage shops, the point is to wear them with the proper attitude. These clothes all have a story, take these into account and wear them as pieces of history.

“TEENAGERS in a c

T

oday’s teenager is a whole new breed. With role models like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, it’s no wonder young women are so far removed from the memories I have of myself at that age. When I was in high school, I remember constantly being told: “These are the best years of your life.” But, a lot of today’s youth seem to take that old sentiment and bring it to a new extreme. Obviously, not all teenagers are bad. But, never have I seen so many young men and women show so little regard for their future. They do what they want, when they want, and they do it all in the name of “freedom”. And, unlike the flower children of the 60’s, these kids aren’t fighting for a cause. They’re not concerned with politics. They believe they’re unbreakable, so responsible behavior is a bore. Consequences aren’t given a second thought, or, for that matter, even a first. How else can one explain the countless 18 and 19 year olds already buried in credit card debt, or the fact that there are more and more 15 year old mothers? Current morals (or, the increasing lack thereof), make the first verse of an old Pete Seeger song come to mind:

14

Where have all the flowers gone? Long time passing Where have all the flowers gone? Long time ago Where have all the flowers gone? Girls have picked them every one When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn? So, in case you were wondering whatever happened to Baby Jane, it would seem that, in an effort to find excitement in the moment, she

a fast changing society” lost her soul. Now, I’m not suggesting that we should go back to the days of chastity belts and public floggings. But, it does seem like, as each generation becomes more “advanced”, they also become less patient. In this technological world, where information is so readily available, must everything, and everyone, try to keep pace? Things move faster and faster every day, and this explains, at least in part, why 15 seems to be the new 30. I can accept green hair, tattoos and body piercing. I’m all for self-expression. What I do take offense to, however, is the parade of flesh that is more and more prevalent at theaters and malls. I’m not just talking about low necklines and bare midriffs. I’m talking about a more recent trend a thong, paired with low riders, which exposes enough back side to make me want to cover Jordan ‘s eyes, and my own. If I were a teenager today, I’d like to think that I would have enough self-respect not to take part in this foolish fashion fad. If so little is left to the imagination, do

these girls really have any room to complain if suitors don’t exactly treat them like untouched gems? I just have to ask myself, “How many kids, verging on adulthood, can honestly look in the

mirror, and say they like who they’re becoming?” I’m not talking about ego, which most of today’s youth seem to have in abundance. I’m talking about a basic sense that what they’re doing is genuine. If the teen years are truly supposed to be the best years of life, I would think that young adults would want to take a little more time to smell the roses before they crush them underfoot, then look back to find that, in what seems like an instant, they’ve all wilted. I fear that more and more young people are reaching a point of no return before they reach 20. When will they ever learn?

from p.10 shirts and pants, cool patterns and designs, these are the trademarks of the ancient times which young people have not practised. 4.With the combination of today’s technology of relaxing and cosy fabrics, old school designs can be appealing flashy and yet relaxed at the same time. So why is old school fashion coming back? Some people would see it as a figure of speech for us demanding to get back history that certainly not and in fact doesn’t belonged to us. It can also be an image for trying to extort the greatest and finest clothes out of the past. When old school fashion was brought into this generation, we never actually brought all of the terrible and awful reminiscences with it. Old school fashion could either be an enormous example of recapturing the stunning past or it could be a ghastly allegory for discriminatory loss of memory.
