OUR MISSION

Gladwyne Montessori cultivates self-reliance in our students through a learning experience guided by the philosophy of Maria Montessori and informed by contemporary educational research. We provide a vibrant and academically stimulating program that develops curious and confident students, well-prepared to serve as responsible citizens of the greater community.

A LETTER FROM CARRIE KRIES, HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends, When students, such as sixth grade graduate, Kiran Mistry, complete their experience at Gladwyne Montessori, they move on to the next part of their educational journey equipped with much more than a uniquely stellar education. Our students possess a passion for learning and a true desire to make a positive difference that stays with them for life. As I reflect on my first year as Head of School, I am filled with gratitude for all who invested in the Impact of “Yes!” with a gift to the Fund for Gladwyne Montessori. Your generosity has a significant impact on our students, teachers, and our programs every day. Looking back, I see the Impact of “Yes!” most clearly in the moments that caused me to stop short, amazed by the depth of learning that takes place all throughout our beautiful school every single day. One-year-olds, courageously embarking on their Montessori journey with their parents close by their side. The two-year-olds, singing the phases of a caterpillar’s life cycle. A three-year-old, marching around her classroom holding a sandpaper letter, tracing it with her finger while repeating its sound. Five-year-olds, in the hallway, adding bead chains and counting by tens. Eight-year-olds, engrossed in an engaging lesson on decimal fractions. Upper Elementary students, joining friends from Philadelphia Montessori Charter School for an overnight nature service trip on the Chesapeake. Adult learners, gathered for an in-depth course on Montessori Philosophy. The list goes on and on. Together, these moments tell a beautiful and powerful story about the value that Gladwyne Montessori brings to our students, our families and our community. This is truly the Impact of “Yes!” As you read through this report, you, too, will see the important role that philanthropy plays, every day, at Gladwyne Montessori. To all who so generously gave of their time, talent and treasure, I sincerely thank you for investing in our students, our teachers and our extraordinary school. With warmth and gratitude, Carrie Kries Head of School

BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2016–2017

A LETTER FROM STEFANIE LANGER, BOARD CHAIR

Chair Stefanie Langer

The Pythagoreans believed that the Tetrad - the number four – was the perfect number, underpinning their guiding philosophy, that the soul has four parts – mind, opinion, science and sense. Four is also the number of stability, order and completion of justice, the number of earth and mankind, the very essence of a strong foundation.

Vice Chair Suzanne Schoch Rehl Treasurer Ashley Govberg Secretary Lori Israeli Trustees Jason Brown Alexander Feldman P. Scott Gregorchuk Anthony Grillo Matthew Heil Anup Kharode Dan Lammot Alixandra Morgan Bashar Qubain Alexander Schoenfeld Suga Smith Jon Tullis William Wermuth Violet Mendoza Willing Christopher Yanney Ex-Officio Carrie Kries Head of Schools

Four years – that’s the age of many of our current students and the point when a child transitions intellectually in a marked way, developing structure around skills, experiences and observations she has gained and readying for great things to come in her “all-dayer” year. Four years is also the amount of time I have served as Chair of Gladwyne Montessori’s Board of Trustees. From my vantage point, changes that have occurred during this period, like a few others in the school’s 50+ year history, have been transformative. Solidifying Gladwyne Montessori’s position as a leader in 21st century education and re-establishing best practice relative to program delivery and administrative operations has not come without significant investment, hard work and sacrifice, however. Past and present faculty, staff, students, parents and trustees serve as the foundation of this school and without the support of this special community, Gladwyne Montessori would not have the soul to move forward into a period of stability and great opportunity. The Fund for Gladwyne Montessori supports, among other things, learning materials and activities for our students and is essential to building our community of giving. Led by Alumni Parents, Susan and Michael Giampetroni, Institutional Advancement Committee Chair, Suga Smith and staff, the $157,000 raised during the 2016-17 school year was a great accomplishment and serves as an excellent launching pad for our new Director of Institutional Advancement, Molly Robbins going forward. The Board is thrilled to welcome Molly to our family and have her join Ahsiya Scovern in executing on several exciting initiatives that will result in significant upgrades to our classrooms and campus over the coming years. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank Carrie Kries and her entire staff for their energy and tenacity - we are so very proud of you. I would also like to thank all of our students, parents and benefactors - everything you do matters. If numbers rule all things as the Pythagoreans believed, then I feel good fortune to come to Gladwyne Montessori in this fourth year of my service to it.

With gratitude, Stefanie Langer Chair, Board of Trustees Mother of Jake Dittus (alumnus) and Jasper Dittus (3rd grade)

While Renaissance teachers such as Isabel Leininger can never be replaced, we are fortunate that they also never truly leave Gladwyne Montessori, remaining a part of the fabric of all that makes our school so very special.
