Dear Friends, At Gladwyne Montessori, we believe that once cultivated, a love of learning remains for life. As I look back on 2018, I’m filled with such gratitude for all who so generously supported our mission. More than just a school where children flourish, Gladwyne Montessori is a community that develops global citizens who are equal parts hard-working and capable. As a member of our community, you play a vital role in our work, enhancing our programs and opening doors to opportunities and experiences that instill a sense of wonder. Our 2018 Impact Report is a celebration of the Gladwyne Montessori community and your tremendous impact on our special school. I am so grateful for your partnership and generosity. With warmth and gratitude, Carrie Kries HEAD OF SCHOOL

We are so grateful for all who supported our school’s mission during the 2018 academic year. Your generosity enabled us to say “yes” to new ideas and innovative opportunities that enriched our learning environment throughout the year.

Campus Enhancements Gifts made through the Fund for Gladwyne Montessori are put to use all throughout our beautiful campus. During the 2018 academic year, we made critical updates to our school wide phone system, added a toddler bathroom and half-walls in La Casa, replaced portions of the sprinkler system in the Rachel Eve Savett Elementary Building, and painted the exterior stucco and trim on our historic Merion Square building.
5
New Materials Maria Montessori stressed the need for teachers to continually perfect the learning environment, knowing that the child’s interest depends on it. In 2018, the Fund for Gladwyne Montessori made it possible for us to say “yes!” to Montessori classroom materials, new gym equipment, a rocking boat and new scooters for our toddlers, two outdoor mud kitchens, and more!
6
Field Trips & Enrichment Programs Students enjoyed trips to the Franklin Institute, Sandy Hill Farm, Rolling Hill Park, Washington D.C., Camp Onas, the Barnes Foundation and the Gladwyne Fire Company. Our students engaged in visits from award-winning authors, naturalists, scientists and reporters. Thanks to you, the list of field trips and experiential learning opportunities made possible through the Fund for Gladwyne Montessori is extensive and meaningful.
DID YOU KNOW Some of our elementary students participate in organizing smaller, interest-driven field trips called “going outs.
7
Montessori Math Training and Materials Thanks to the generosity of those who participated in the Fund-a-Need during our PTA Auction, Let’s Dance, ‘80’s, our teachers have had an opportunity to update bead cabinets, hundreds boards, and other fundamental Montessori materials, as well as purchase extension items and receive multiple onsite Montessori math trainings from Erika Ohlhaver, ETC Consulting Director and Montessori trainer.
8
Tuition Assistance We believe that all children deserve the gift of time spent in our Montessori environment; your gifts ensure that it remains within reach for our talented students. One in five Gladwyne Montessori students received needbased tuition assistance last year, thanks to the generosity of our donors, many participating through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Programs.
9
Professional Development Our faculty and staff are deeply committed to lifelong learning. Thanks to gifts made to the Fund for Gladwyne Montessori, as well as a lead contribution from the Catherwood Family, Gladwyne Montessori hosted a week-long Montessori philosophy course, launched a monthly series for teachers to share areas of expertise, became an Act 48 provider through the PA Department of Education, and sent seven Gladwyne Montessori faculty and staff to Denver, Colorado to join close to 4,000 Montessorians from across the globe for three days of thought-provoking conversations and best practices in Montessori education. Our very own Carrie Kries and Audra Walsh presented at this conference, hosted by the American Montessori Society.

school had already received 62 gifts, and Swoop, the Philadelphia Eagles mascot, even flew in to cheer us on! Our students used various materials to track progress, including a giant 100s board! In the afternoon, the Upper Elementary students collaborated to calculate the average number of gifts received per hour. At 2:45 PM, we hit 99 donors, leaving us to wonder who the 100th donor would be. In seconds, our 100th donor became none other than Head of School, Carrie Kries! At 4 PM, we were thrilled to see highlights from our day featured on NBC10. Adding to the excitement, ambassadors generated 706 webpage visits and 93 gifts! 13

Honoring Maggie Brown Dougherty & Diane Vreugdenhil More than 100 members of the Gladwyne Montessori community gathered on Sunday, April 22 for a Retirement Luncheon, honoring two of our very special teachers: Maggie Brown Dougherty and Diane Vreugdenhil. Collectively, these women have dedicated an incredible 67 years of service to our children and their families: Maggie concluded her 38th year as a teacher in the Primary program, and Diane concluded her 29th serving in various roles, including 17 years as an assistant teacher for our toddler program. Guests enjoyed a
“I enjoyed every day I spent in Maggie’s class… [a] special memory is when Maggie taught me how to ride a bike. Although it was scary, she instilled courage in me. Maggie had a wonderful impact on my childhood and my education, as she has on so many others.” Drew Rodack, Gladwyne Montessori Alumnus
beautiful luncheon with a program including video tributes and live toasts for both Maggie and Diane. During the event, Carrie Kries announced the establishment of the Maggie Brown Dougherty Endowed Scholarship, which will impact our students and school for years to come. Let’s Dance 80’s! On March 5, 2018, the Gladwyne Montessori community gathered at the Hilton for an extraordinary evening of dancing, bidding and fun – while grossing over $186,000 in support of our special school! A special highlight from the evening was the incredible fund-a-need; it raised over $43,000 and allowed us to update math work in all 11 classrooms and provide our faculty with extraordinary professional development opportunities in Montessori math instruction. Special thanks to our Auction Co-Chairs, Lara Qubain, Nisha Goel, and Katherine Karamatsoukas, as well as our PTA President, Debbie Piasecki and Vice President, Leahann Iannotta, for all of their hard work in planning this remarkable event. We sincerely appreciate our auction volunteers’ dedication, energy, and time in collecting items for the auction, coordinating class projects and organizing this spectacular night.

A Literary Celebration! On Wednesday, April 11, library donors joined staff, trustees, and friends and family of Carol Barclay for a Library Ribbon Cutting and Retirement Celebration. Guests heard from Carrie Kries, Head of School, and Matthew Heil, Chair of the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees, as we unveiled our beautifully renovated library. This project was made possible through the generosity of those who contributed to the $41,200, raised through the fund-a-need at Gatsby, Gladwyne Montessori’s 2017 PTA auction. This project enabled us to enclose our library, enhance our reading collection, provide an online research tool, update our HVAC system and wireless network, and add new furniture.

A celebration feature was our recognition of Carol Barclay for her 32 years of service to Gladwyne Montessori and its library program. Carol spoke to attendees about her experience growing our program and developing lasting relationships within our community. Following an official ribbon-cutting by Carol and Carrie, guests toured the new library and had an opportunity to talk with Librarian Indre Page about our exceptional literacy programming. Thank you to all who contributed to our beautiful new library!
Grandparents & Special Friends’ Day We were delighted to host grandparents and special friends on Friday, May 11 for a special day at Gladwyne Montessori! The morning began with a formal welcome from Trustee and Gladwyne Montessori grandparent, Anthony Grillo, who thanked our grandparent benefactors and discussed opportunities for grandparent involvement within our community. Guests then observed Montessori education in action during classroom visits, followed by pictures with children and a visit to our book fair.
