Young Voices of Indianapolis Mission Statement
Young Voices of Indianapolis is a non-profit community choral organization involving children and young adults in grades kindergarten through twelve from the greater Indianapolis area. Our mission is focused on providing a superior choral music education with an emphasis on outreach and service work. Our founding principles encourage members to use their gifts and talents to support the Indianapolis community and beyond through mission and community service projects.
What defines the Young Voices of Indianapolis?
Helping young people become more selfless and giving individuals, we continually strive to teach the importance of being good citizens. This focus on community service is one of the ways in which Young Voices of Indianapolis sets itself apart. While performance excellence is an important component of our organization, we always look for opportunities to reach out to others through the beauty of the music we make. The choirs participate in at least two community service outreach projects each year. In the fall of 2008, members of Young Voices began teaching music classes to children at the Julian Center, a shelter for battered women and their children. Young Voices of Indianapolis is also dedicated to offering the youth of central Indiana an excellent musical education, while keeping the number of rehearsal hours each week to a minimum. We understand the importance of family time and the need to create balanced schedules in young people’s lives. The Young Voices of Indianapolis members find that they are not only building lasting friendships and growing as musicians, but most importantly, they are experiencing the fulfilling rewards of helping others!
One Organization, Four Choirs Cherub Choir (Kindergarten-1st Grade) The Cherub Choir, a non-auditioned group, is the first step in the Young Voices program. This choir incorporates music and movement to teach basic music skills, pitch-matching and performance etiquette. The Cherubs sing at both the holiday and spring concerts. Directed by Cheryl Eiszner and Ed Hennes, Cherub Choir is offered at St. Richard’s Episcopal School from 3:30-4:15 & 4:30-5:15 p.m. and at Park Tudor, 4:30-5:15 p.m. on Wednesdays. Preparatory Choir (2nd-4th grade) The Preparatory Choir is a non-auditioned group open to children in grades 2-4 that focuses on helping children master the basics of music. This choir incorporates music and movement, rhythm and music reading, and performance etiquette to prepare them for Concert Choir and beyond. The Preparatory Choir sings at both the holiday and spring concerts and has the opportunity to particpate in at least one service project during the year. Directed by Jennifer Nie, this choir meets on Wednesday from 4:15-5:15 p.m. at Park Tudor.

YVI Concert Choir (5th-12th grade) Directed by Young Voices of Indianapolis’ founder and artistic director Marian Bender, the Concert Choir involves children in grades 5-12. Fundamental elements of this group include community service work, partnerships with charities, and performance opportunities throughout the area. The choir sings a variety of music including sacred and secular, gospel and spirituals, broadway and jazz, and multicultural repertoire. Past tours included California, Louisiana, Texas, Wisconsin, Hawaii, Illinois, Florida, Denver, New York, England, Italy & Sydney, Australia. In April 2018, the Concert Choir participated in the Worldstrides Heritage Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee, where they received a Gold Award and first place in their division at the Worldstrides Heritage Music Festival. The Concert Choir has won numerous awards, including the coveted Gold Award at all Heritage competitions. In March, 2019, the Concert Choir will travel to Orlando, Florida, where they have been invited to sing on the Walt Disney World stage! Young Voices Choirs often collaborate with local and national celebrities and have performed with such artists as Sandi Patti, Sylvia McNair, Jim Papoulis, Doreen Rao, Sandra Snow, Andrea Ramsey, Cathy Morris and Steven Stolen. The Concert Choir meets Thursdays at Cathedral High School from 5:30-7:15 p.m.
YVI Encore Singers (7th-12th grade) The Young Voices of Indianapolis Encore Singers is a small, select group of talented middle and high school girls. This unique ensemble sings throughout Indianapolis and focuses on community service work and performance. These young women enjoy singing many types of music including a capella, jazz and classical. The Encore Singers, directed by Lamonte Kuskye, is open by audition to young women in grades 7-12. Rehearsals are held at Cathedral High School from 4:15-5:30 p.m.
The Julian Center Program The Young Voices focus on community service and outreach is just one of the elements that set this organization apart. Our singers have the unique opportunity to participate in helping to lead a music class once a month at the Julian Center, a shelter for battered women and children. This interaction between the singers and the children from the shelter has been a life-altering experience for not only the children in the center but to the YVI singers as well. Our singers feel thankful for the opportunity to bring a bit of happiness and hope to children at the Julian Center. For more information on becoming part of Young Voices of Indianapolis, please email mbender@gocathedral.com. Check out our website at www.youngvoicesindy.org.

Angels We Have Heard On High: Please stand and join us in singing.
Silent Night: Please remain seated.
Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains. And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strains. Gloria, in excelsis Deo. Gloria, in excelsis Deo.
Solo: Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright. Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.
Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heavenly song? Gloria, in excelsis Deo. Gloria, in excelsis Deo. Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing, Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria, in excelsis Deo. Gloria, in excelsis Deo.
All Sing: Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia, Christ the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born Silent night, holy night!
