Foundation Degree in Music Industry Entrepreneurship

ABOUT THE COURSE This course is the only one of its kind in the UK. It is designed to provide recognised accreditation for prior learning for skills you have already developed in the music industry, while teaching new skills in the classroom and workplace. The Foundation Degree in Music Industry Entrepreneurship is aimed at anyone working in the music industry who has prior experience in the sector. This includes, but is not limited to: • • • • • • •

self-employed musicians instrumental teachers music retailers small record labels technicians promoters and managers.

Foundation Degree in Music Industry Entrepreneurship

COURSE MODULES Students will be able to gain accreditation for skills they have already developed in the industry by matching their previous experience to the learning outcomes of a range of modules. To access the Foundation Degree you must be able to claim for at least 30 credits for your professional experience in the first year. The list of modules below indicates the types of activity you can match your previous experience against to claim academic credit. Visit our website for more information. Music Industry Practice This module provides an overview of how the industry functions, realistic concepts of financial rewards, and a guide to the minefield of contract and intellectual property laws. Music Industry Studies This module aims to help students develop critical knowledge and understanding of the protocols, establishments, and professional bodies within the music industry. The History of Popular Music in the Recording Industry This module is designed to introduce students to the major developments in popular music history. Ensemble Studies 1 and 2 These modules provide students with an opportunity to practically and academically develop their rehearsal, organisational, and performance skills. Instrumental Studies 1 and 2 These modules are designed to help students to develop their instrumental performance ability. Music Theory This module is designed to provide students with the necessary analytical skills and musicological vocabulary to engage in music from an academic, creative, or practical perspective. Aural Investigation This module centres on the development of aural perception methodologies such as effective listening, notation protocols, rhythmic/melodic/harmonic analysis, and transcription techniques. Advanced Theory and Aural Investigation This module helps students to develop more advanced theoretical concepts alongside practical/aural applications. Music Technology This module deals with the creative use of music sequencing software, in addition to hardware, storage, health and safety, and network systems.

Studio Operating and Production This module introduces students into a professional recording environment where they will gain a comprehensive understanding of how a studio operates. Arranging Techniques This module introduces students to the areas of notation, arranging and compositional pastiche. Compositional Processes In this module students will examine compositional/ song/lyric writing structures and processes and develop their control of them, in addition to understanding the application of harmony, melody, texture, form and style. Music in Production 1 and 2 This module deals with the concepts of music theory at a level that enhances and/or develops the student’s existing skills. Emphasis will be placed on recognising, utilising and translating basic rhythms, forms, harmonic structures and melodic approaches. Live Sound Engineering 1 and 2 This module provides an understanding of the nature of sound and its associated technological systems. It will explore hearing physiology, sound, microphones, mixing desks, and Public Address (PA) systems. Audio Engineering 1 and 2 This module explores sound as a waveform, the basic physiology of hearing and psychology of sound perception, the basic mechanisms of converting sound to electrical signals, and their storage in analogue and digital recording. Community Music This module aims to provide an understanding of how to set up and run a variety of community-based music projects with regard to programme planning, venues and financial constraints. Working as a Freelance Musician This module examines the creative and theoretical factors of a range of potential freelance employments from within the music industry.

After claiming credit for your previous experience, you will then study the following modules: The Global Music Industry 1 This module is designed to provide students with a context for their work and focuses on building a holistic and comprehensive understanding of the music industry as it exists today.

Entrepreneurship In The Music Industry 1 This module is designed to provide students with the necessary entrepreneurial and creative skills to formulate and exploit their creative talent, intellectual property and musical ideas.

The Global Music Industry 2 This unit follows on from Global Music Industry 1 and focuses on arguably the two most important aspects of the music industry over the last 15 years – The rise of the digital domain and the live music industry.

Entrepreneurship In The Music Industry 2 Building on Entrepreneurship In The Music Industry 1, this module focuses on developing the necessary financial, managerial, and leadership skills to exploit entrepreneurial concepts/artefacts.

Study Skills The module is geared towards enhancing student performance on the award overall, so assessment and content depends on the individual needs of students. Typically, the module will focus on the processes and conventions of writing essays and personal reflective diaries and giving presentations.

Creative Industries Work Placement This extended 60 Credit module takes place in the work place. Students will be expected to critically investigate practices in their workplace and investigate ways in which they can be contextualised and improved.

Creative Industries Practical Project This module takes place in the workplace, and helps students to apply what they have learned on the course so far to their working practices.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS This Foundation Degree course has been made possible by the EU’s Convergence European Social Fund (ESF) through the Welsh Government. Successful applicants who meet the following entry criteria may be entitled to a fully or partly-funded place on the course: 1.

You must live and/or work in one of the Convergence Areas of Wales, and

2.

you must have enough experience within any area of the music industry that would enable you to gain at least 60 credits via accreditation for prior learning over the year and a half of the Foundation Degree.

3.

You must be employed or self-employed (full or part time). You will need to provide HMRC evidence of your employment status. If you live outside a Convergence Area, your HMRC address must be based within a Convergence Area.

4.

Your employer must be a Small Medium Sized Enterprise (SME), and not in the public sector.

CAREER POTENTIAL After completing the course, you can go on to use your new skills in the workplace or choose to study on the final year of a relevant undergraduate degree.

HOW YOU WILL STUDY The course is taught as a series of modules which are delivered over a year and a half through eight one-day workshops and supported via distance learning.

WHERE YOU WILL STUDY This course is run at the University of Glamorgan’s ATRiuM campus in Cardiff. Students studying the Foundation Degree in Music Industry Entrepreneurship at Glamorgan will have access to purpose built, fully kitted out recording studio suites and dedicated practice rooms. All spaces are sound isolated and acoustically treated. The programme will also be delivered in North Wales from September 2012, and in West Wales from September 2013. Venue information will be available from our website nearer those dates.

MODE OF STUDY The course is part-time, allowing stu dents to remain in employment, and takes between 15 and 18 months to complete depend ing on the candidate’s level of experience.
