The Olympic lesson

D

espite the epidemic threat and the very unfavorable climatic conditions, the world finally succeeded in holding its Olympic Games this year. Beijing has succeeded in its bet by organizing this event on the scheduled date, to the delight of lovers and other winter sports enthusiasts. The Chinese gave a great lesson in determination to be there and organized a most successful party. The athletes also rose to the occasion. They showed a desire and rage to resist everything in order ro offer the public a great Olympic competition. Indeed, neither the Covid-19 nor the difficulties of preparation got the better of these heroic sportsmen who, on occasion, gave us great shows and sports performances and achieved many records. However , there is another lesson to be learned from this global event given to us this time by Norway, this Nordic country of 5 million inhabitants which won these Olympic Games loud and clear for the 2nd time. This great performance is due not only to the talent of its athletes, but also to the Norwegian school system which values sport so much. The small Scandinavian country has

clearly succeeded in conveying its cultural values and ancestral traditions in a discipline that has made it a great Olympic nation today. This is to say to what extent man is capable of resisting all misfortunes and achieving all exploits, if he puts forward his human qualities and his humanist values. He can thus conquer everything as long as he shows of course determination, a desire to win, union and mutual aid... During these Beijing Olympics, we saw everything in addition, images and slogans embodying sharing, fair play, gender parity, living together, etc. Values that remain just as important as they guarantee a peaceful and better life for all people of this planet. Our magazine Glamour Fashion and Beauty can therefore only rejoice and applaud all the good initiatives tending to promote this kind of values which are the credo, such as that of Unesco currently rebuilding the famous Al-Nouri mosque, as well as other places of worship in the city of Mosul in Iraq. This commendable gesture in more than one way is to be welcomed, because it will strengthen the culture of tolerance and promote dialogue and living together between all

religions around the world. When one is imbued with such values, one could only show oneself, moreover grateful to all those who have bequeathed to humanity beautiful science, literary or artistic works. The great homage paid these days to the famous couturier Yves Saint Laurent in Paris is an edifying example. In addition to this duty of recognition, humanist values also recommend that we show sensitivity to human tragedies and show solidarity with people who suffer from the horrors of war. In this edition , we must warmly welcome the position of Ukrainian and Russian artists who reacted quickly to denounce this war between their two countries.Their messages of sympathy towards all victims and their cries to put an end to this conflict show once again, that art and culture are much more noble than all policies, especially those that lead to war and tragedy in the world. The Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty

QUEEN ELIZABETH II

S

The postponed festivities

cheduled for February 6, the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, was finally postponed to June of the current year. This event, eagerly awaited by millions of Britons, was supposed to celebrate the accession to the throne of her sovereign who, this year passes the milestone of 70 years of reign in the United Kingdom. No king or sultan before has reigned as long as this queen so loved by her people. We do not know until now, the reasons for the postponement. Is it because of the pandemic prevailing in the United Kingdom, or is it the controversial choice of this date which reminds the sovereign moments of sadness and mourning following the premature death of her father, must-she remember the day on February 6, 1952.

the Queen, on June 2nd 1953, at the ‘Westminster Abbey. An event which was moreover broadcasted for the first time on television and followed by 277 million viewers worldwide.

What does the Platinum Jubilee mean? In the United Kingdom, the Platinum Jubilee is celebrated when a sovereign reaches 70 years of reign. This event must according to royal tradition, be celebrated with pomp throughout the country, especially since this time it is a first since Queen Elizabeth II is the only British sovereign to have had this longevity on the throne.

It is necessary to specify only that other royal jubilees exist but of different values and symbolic systems. Celebrating this 2022 jubilee this way will undoubtedly be a moment of gratitude for the British and an opportunity to pay a vibrant tribute to a queen whose life has been entirely devoted to the crown and the defense of her people. However, we will have to be patient and wait for the month of June to launch these festivities which will see if the initial program is maintained, many activities, such as concerts, collective lunches in the four corners of the kingdom, but also a contest of cakes, a parade in which 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians would take part. For more information, we will come back to it in our next editions. F. M

This small country in the south-west of Great Britain thus offers tourists the possibility of immersing themselves, during a trip in a magical atmosphere

created by a multitude of majestic landscapes. They will marvel at the rocky beaches of Gower, the misty peaks of Snowdonia or the marvelous Brecon Beacons Park. These ancient and fabulous sites are sculpted in mountains, continually assaulted by the waves. In addition to the natural sites, the traveler will also have to discover the Welsh culture and language through its Celtic characteristics and especially its emblematic castles built for centuries, which today are the pride of an entire population

. The country is therefore a magnificent destination for all adventurers as beautiful getaways, in particular that safety is ensured by a warm and welcoming people. Cardiff, the capital of the country, is one of the most visited tourist attractions. Located on the south coast, it offers a wide range of historical monuments to discover such as its castles and museum and also plenty of recreational opportunities through venues hosting many popular festivals and a variety of sports facilities,

particularly renowned golf courses. The visitor who walks there will not be disappointed. On the contrary,he will be enchanted by its well-preserved Victorian arcades, streets, in addition to excellent shops and restaurants. But you cannot make a stay in Wales without going to escape a little to Snowdonia, a magnificent park located in the northwest of the country. This place or rather this large territory is a real paradise for lovers of outdoor adventures, hiking and climbing. We could also

take the direction of Portmeirion, a village located on the west coast of the country. The tourist will be delighted to discover magnificent gardens, colorful buildings, fountains and churches that resemble those often found in Mediterranean villages. For lovers of architecture and history, preserved in Europe, is an impressive building with its ramparts punctuated by polygonal towers. Around the castle, there is a picturesque old town which is also worth a trip since it is home to many cafes, qua-

lity restaurants and high-end hotels. But all these places are, in fact, only a small sample of the touristic hand cultural heritage available to the country, because just for architectural works and historical monuments, there are more than 640 castles. This shows how much you will never regret going to discover this small country with its various tourist attractions. F. M

T

he legendary and one of the best American football player Tom Brady had decided to retire at the age of 44. Brady had posted on his Twitter account: I enjoyed my career in the NFL. I have always believed that the sport of football is an ‘all-in’ proposition - if there is not 100% competitive commitment you will not be successful and success is what I love so much about our game. There is a physical, mental and emotional challenge every day that allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I’ve done my best for the past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to

I’ve loved my NFL career, and now it’s time to focus my time and energy on other things that need my attention. After several days of short retirement, Brady reconsiders his decision, he is back with Tampa Buccaneers to the delight of his fans. P. B

THE FONDATION PIERRE BERGÉ YVES SAINT LAURENT Taking after the haute couture house, the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent was established in 2002 and is led today by Madison Cox. Its primary mission is to preserve and promote the work of Yves Saint Laurent.

The Work of Yves Saint Laurent In 2017, with the opening of the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris, the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent started a new chapter by doubling the space visited by the public and focusing its program of exhibitions solely on Saint Laurent’s body of work. “I have always said that memories should be transformed into projects, and that is what we have done with this Foundation. 2017 marks a new chapter with the opening of two Yves Saint Laurent museums in Paris and Marrakech. so long ago, when we didn’t know what fate had in store for us.” — Pierre Bergé From Haute Couture House to Foundation In 1974, the Yves Saint Laurent haute couture house, based at 30 bis rue Spontini since it was established in 1961, relocated to a Second Empire-built hôtel particulier at 5 avenue Marceau. Yves Saint Laurent worked within its walls for nearly thirty years. At a press conference on January 7, 2002, Saint Laurent announced his decision to retire and close his haute couture house. Two years later, following extensive renovation of the building, the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent opened its doors. The non-profit organization has three main goals : – The preservation of haute couture and ready-to-wear clothing and accessories, sketches for the collections, relevant documents, and various drawings and objects related to Saint Laurent’s body of work; – The organization of exhibitions devoted to fashion, painting, photography, the decorative arts, contemporary art, and Saint Laurent’s work, both in its own exhibition spaces and at other institutions in France and abroad; - The support of cultural institutions and projects.

YVES SAINT LAURENT AUX MUSÉES celebrates the 60th anniversary of the first Yves Saint Laurent runway show. On January 29, 1962, the 26-year-old designer presented his inaugural collection under his own name. From that day on, Saint Laurent seized upon a vision and a style that became his staple throughout his career and until 2002, forty years in which he broke down barriers and introduced bold new forms. The garments designed by Yves Saint Laurent speak to an entire culture; they embody a far-reaching artistic universe. His endless fascination with the visual arts, both contemporary and historical, deeply informed and energized his work. This new expansive exhibition seeks to retrace the myriad of cultures and artistic movements Saint Laurent drew inspiration from. Conceived and made possible by the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent, YVES SAINT LAURENT AUX MUSÉES will foster a dialogue between a selection of garments, including some of the couturier’s most iconic designs, and the permanent collections of six prominent Parisian museums. The exhibition celebrates both Saint Laurent’s

mastery and art in general. The tentacular scale of the project makes it possible to link the world of Yves Saint Laurent with other artistic realms. At the Centre Pompidou – France’s National Museum of Modern Art, we will see Yves Saint Laurent as an artist rooted in his time and deeply in tune with the most noteworthy artistic movements of the 20th century. Picasso, the unequivocal leading figure of the century, holds a special place in the couturier’s work, as it is also apparent in the vis à vis on view at the Musée National Picasso-Paris. Drawing uncanny correlations in between artistic disciplines and schools of thought, Yves Saint Laurent savvily alternated rhythms and colours, lights and textures, as seen in the associations featured at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris.

D

espite the Covid-19 pandemic, China has finally won its bet by organizing the 2022 Winter Olympics. The controversy created as to the possibility of this country to hold this event in this period of health crisis, has been defeated. courtesy of the Chinese Olympic Committee. Indeed, the Olympic Games did take place as planned in Beijing, despite all the avatars linked both to the pandemic and the climatic conditions which were not very good this year in the Chinese capital. Falling snowflakes were rare and minimal and thus risked compromising the organization of this global event. To counter this unfortunate situation, the Chinese have decided that the events and competitions will take place on 100% artificial snow, first in the 60

history of the Olympic Games. This ingenious solution, which nevertheless requires the mobilization of large resources, indicates the determination of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) to want to hold their Olympic Games on the scheduled date. The Chinese intransigence seems to follow criticism from certain major countries which blamed the Beijing government for its violations of human rights, and which even brandished a few days before the start of competitions, the threats of a diplomatic boycott, or even non-participation in these Olympics. But things eventually calmed down and returned to normal, no country followed through on its threats. Beijing has probably succee-

ded in convincing by giving all the necessary guarantees (strict health protocol, daily screening of athletes, reduced and controlled access to Olympic sites, etc.) to successfully organize this event.

Seven new events appear Thus they Asian giant has succeeded in meeting the challenge, it has also seen its games enriched with seven new sporting events. We can mention, among others, the «big air» free-style skiing which will now include both sexes, the women’s single-seater bobsleign or the mixed team ski jumping event where two men and two women will be aligned.

These innovations tend in fact to respond to this leitmotif that we want to imprint on these games: «More diversity and better parity». Female athletes represented 45.44% of participants in this 24th edition, unlike the 2018 Pyeongchang Games where they were only 41.2%. These figures show the interest given today to women’s sport. In Beijing, there will be 1,292 women to compete in this world competition, a figure never reached before at the Winter Games.

Unbeatable Norway

W

hile the slogan «Together for a Shared Future» was chosen for these Beijing 2022 games to visibly embody the sharing and union of all countries, it is clear that Norway has some ignored, because it went, from the start of the competitions, on it’s own to win the maximum number of medals during these Olympic Games. The Scandinavian Ogar seems impassive when it comes to sporting competitions and winning titles. He managed to repeat his performances from Pyeongchang 2018 by raking wide, to appear unsurprisingly at the top of the medals table. The athletes of this country of 5 million inhabitants have challenged the world. They alone won 37 medals, 16 of which were gold . The adage that says: «Norwegians are born with skis on their feet», was confirmed since they dominated once again these Olympic Games, especially in certain events such as cross-country skiing.

Indeed, and since the first medal won in skiathlon by Therese Johaug who opened the ball of the competition, the Norwegian athletes have chained performance after performance, thanks in particular to the phenomenal Marte Olsbu Roeiseland who won on her own, three Olympics titles , her teammates were not left out since they too managed to get on the podium like Johannes Thinges Bo who won gold in the 15 km mass start or Marius Lindvik who flew over his opponents in ski jumping. In short, nothing resisted these Norwegian Vikings who were on all fronts, in biathlon, crosscountry skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, speed skating and freestyle skiing. Athletes like the young Birk Ruud, winner in Big Air skiing or Therese Johaug and Johannes Klaebo, gold medalists in cross-country skiing, did not give up. Neither Germany nor Sweden and Russia could escape Norwegian hegemony. Even if the first city has shown itself, it must be admitted, a little valiant in resisting until achieving some performances in certain Olympic disciplines. The Germans were certainly eye-catching, but without managing to turn the tide in the medal table. They finished in 2nd position thanks to the exploits of some of their athletes like Francesco Friedrich in bobsleigh, Wendl and Arlt in luge in doubles or Christopher Grotheer and Hannah Neise who dominated the skeleton.

The United States holds firm

U

nlike Canada, which sank by only achieving a disappointing 11th place, the USA held their own in the face of European domination – Norway and Germany in particular – in these Beijing 2022 Olympics. Indeed, there is reason to be disappointed in the Canadian camp. The poor performance of its athletes constitutes a failure, even a shipwreck, especially since the North American country once dominated the Winter Olympics. It even won those of 2010 organized in Vancouver. As for the Americans, they were still able to do well by clinging to the head of the peloton. They managed to preserve their 4ᵉ place in the final table with a total of 25 medals including 8 gold. The performances of skater Nathan Chen, jumper Christopher Lillis and speed skater Erin Jackson were very exceptional and allowed them to fly the colors of their country, the United States of America. It is also worth mentioning the snowboarder Chloe Kim who kept her halfpipe gold medal acquired four years ago in South Korea. This 21-year-old aerialist, outstripped her immediate competitors, the Spaniard Queralt Castellet and the Japanese Sena Tomita. But if there is finally a lesson to be learned from these Olympic Games Beijing 2022, it is that the great exploits and the best performances are not measured by the size of a state or a country. Rather, it is a matter of individual talents, tradition, culture, but also of an effective school system that values sport. Norway is a model in this respect. GF&B MAGAZINE | Issue 10

uring the sixteen days of Olympic competitions, Beijing, the Chinese capital, vibrated to the rhythm of records and other performances achieved by athletes from different countries and nations. From biathlon, to mogul skiing, figure skating, curling or ice hockey, the competition was high level and amazed both the public present and the millions of viewers who followed the Olympic Games through their screens.

However, the Beijing Olympics will retain the performances of the phenomenal Norwegian Roeiseland, the small but nevertheless talented Russian Valieva or the figure skaters who have won over the public with the quality of their shows, such as the American Chen and the charming duo , the French Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron. Finally, not forgetting the biathlete Quentin Fillon Maillet who flew over these Games by winning five precious medals.

It should be remembered that China’s participation in the last Olympic Games in 2018 (16ᵉ place in the final ranking) was disappointing, if not catastrophic, to say the least. The consecrations of the young Chinese therefore allowed her country to bounce back and even overtake the great rival the USA, by winning the precious 3ᵉ place with a total of 15 medals. This Chinese athlete, raised in the United States, has become the heroine of an entire people, especially since she is considered today as the first freestyle skier of any gender to have won so many medals in this Olympic discipline.

event which enabled her to win a precious gold medal today.

lthough 31 years old, the Norwegian Marte Olsbu Roeiseland achieved the feat by winning three titles at the Beijing Olympics. She became the second female athlete in the history of the Winter Games to win three Olympic medals during the same edition.

Jackson achieves a historic achievement and joined her compatriot, the skater Shani Davis gold medalist at the 2006 Olympics as the only black Olympic champions in the history of winter sports.

A

After winning the gold medals in the sprint and mixed relay, the Scandinavian did it again by outclassing her main opponents, Sweden’s Elvira Öberg (2nd) and her compatriot Tirill Eckhoff (3rd) in the pursuit, giving her country a 3rd Olympic title. Roeiseland, who was eleven times world champion, once again confirmed her great athletic abilities by showing herself to be as competitive as she is unbeatable despite the weight of her age. Her competitors must obviously work even harder and double their efforts to one day be able to dethrone her since she remains, until then, the queen in this kind of competition.

The historic feat of American Erin Jackson

S

peed skater Erin Jackson made Winter Olympics history when she became the first black woman to win an individual gold medal in this kind of competition. This performance was achieved in women’s speed skating over 500 meters during the Beijing 2022 Olympics.

It should be noted that this athlete was before 2016 a specialist in roller derby and inline skating before converting to speed skating. It seems that she bet well on this

hese two French skaters succeeded, from the start of the competition, in making a successful comeback in this figure skating event. They were at the top of their game in their first rhythm dance show, managing to break their own record. Their demonstration has, to say the least, amazed more than one. The couple performed an urban dance there without the slightest misstep to music by John Legend, demonstrating the most perfect speed and synchronization. This probably encouraged them to repeat their feat in the free dance two days later. They managed to glean a total of 226.98 points and won the gold medal in this longawaited event. The second and third places on the podium went respectively to the Russian world champions Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov and to the American duo Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue. The French duo left with a well-deserved medal. They will no doubt savor this feat before preparing quickly for the world championship which will take place from March 21 to 27 in their country in Montpellier. A confirmation in front of their public is necessary to perpetuate the joy.

The Grand Slam of French biathlete Quentin Fillon Maillet

U

nheard of in the history of biathlon, French athlete Quentin Fillon Maillet single-handedly won five medals, including two gold, in this edition of the 2022 Beijing Olympics. This feat is incredible for this champion, unknown until then, who writes his name in gold letters in the history of the Winter Olympics. Indeed, no Frenchman, since the fencer Roger Ducret of the 1924 Olympics, has managed to win so many medals in so many races. «Incredible!», will say the specialists of this event. But what is even more fabulous in this story is that the French biathlete arrived in Beijing with a completely blank track record and leaves with as many consecrations and medals. An extraordinary result which also makes him one of the top 10 most rewarded athletes in his country at the Olympic Games. It must be said that this 29-year-old athlete showed great tenacity during these Olympics. He was breathtaking in the pursuit (12.5 km) as well as in the sprint and the mixed relay. Maillet today becomes the pride, not only of the Jura, his native region, but of an entire country, because he has contributed a lot to propelling France to the rank of the great Olympic nations. The Beijing 2022 Olympics ended on Sunday February 20. See you in Italy, which will be the future host country of the 2026 Winter Olympics. F. M

Reconstruction of the

Al-Nuri Mosque in Mosul

M

osul, this second Iraqi city located in the north of the country, suffered for a long time from the war waged by DAECH in the Middle East during the period 2014 - 2019. In addition to thousands of victims, this historic city experienced, during this conflict, a fate of more appalling since it has been completely devastated by this ultra-radical terrorist organization which has sown chaos by transforming it into a veritable ghost town. Indeed, the images transmitted by the

various television channels showed a devastated city where only rubble could be seen. No public or private building has been spared the fury of extremists. Not even the prestigious Al-Nouri Mosque was left out; it was completely destroyed. By attacking this sacred place, the terrorist hordes of Daesh have shown their folly in ransacking, burning and demolishing everything. The organization has crossed the Rubican, arousing a wave of indignation both among Muslims and around the world. Because the Al-Nouri mosque, beyond its

religious symbolism, was a jewel of the 12th century belonging to the universal heritage of humanity. The act was so despicable and the discontent so great that it was decided, as soon as the city was taken back from the hands of Daesh, to quickly

rebuild this emblematic mosque. This is how Unesco took the decision since 2018, for its reconstruction and rehabilitation, by launching an international competition prepared jointly with the Iraqi authorities and the Iraqi Sunni fund with the support of the United Arab Emirates, the main project donors.

This commendable initiative is in fact, part of a much more

ambitious project called «Reviving the Spirit of Mosul» and consisting in restoring all the historical monuments of the city. In this line, the UN organization and the Iraqi government have agreed to undertake the reconstruction of two churches in the old city of Mosul: the Syriac Catholic Church Al-Tahera and the conventual church al-Saaa known as «Our Lady of the clock». The aim of all these actions is to apparently revive the cultural and religious diversity of this historic city and spread hope to strengthen community cohesion throughout the country. Today, the reconstruction work of the mosque is going well and teams are busy to finalize it before the year 2023, date of the reception of the project. Admittedly,

the new design of the building has attracted some criticism from the inhabitants of Mosul, but this does not diminish the efforts of architects and other workers who want to make the mosque not only a religious building, but also a center of civilization. for Mosul and for all of Iraq. It will be equipped with an art school and will bring together all of Iraqi society in various cultural events. Glamour Fashion and Beauty can only welcome and applaud this kind of initiative which tends to strengthen the culture of tolerance and promote living together around the world. F. M

International Mother tongue Language Day

A

few days ago, the world celebrated Mother tongue Language Day. This year, the ceremony was placed under the theme “the use of technology for multilingual learning, challenges and opportunities», according to the wishes and recommendations of UNESCO’s officials. This theme chosen by this UN organization which, it should be remembered, is the one proclaimed for the first time in 1999 February 21 as International Mother tongue Language Day, tends in particular to exploit new technologies to improve multilingual education and supporting equitable and inclusive learning opportunities for all. The day was also used to recall once again, the need to preserve linguistic and cultural diversity, especially when we know that more than 43% of the languages spoken in the world - out of a total of 6700 languages, according to the figures of this organization - are threatened with extinction. It should also be noted that the languages most exposed to this risk are particularly the local or mother tongues which, for ideological or economic reasons, often find themselves in difficult situations due to a linguistic conflict opposing dominant languages to dominated languages. Situations that would soon precipitate their erasure from the global linguistic landscape. And yet it is these languages, the mother tongues that help transmit culture, values, traditional knowledge and ensure the promotion of sustainable futures. Humanity has finally understood that it has nothing to lose if it begins to preserve and perpetuate multiculturalism and multilingualism in the world. On the contrary, any natural language on earth that comes to disappear will constitute an immeasurable loss, because it is now considered to be part of the universal heritage. International Mother tongue Language Day is a time to highlight and reaffirm the importance of languages both spoken and written. It should also serve as an opportunity to draw attention to linguistic issues, but also to mobilize states and peoples to support the implementation of strategies and policies in favor of linguistic diversity and multilingualism in all regions of the world.

«Languages are among the most precious, but also the most fragile treasures of humanity», said Vigdis Finnbogadottir, the former President of Iceland (1980-1996). It is therefore necessary to preserve them and protect them against linguistic conflicts and other attempts to make them disappear. We have every interest to do so, because a language, beyond the fact that it is the main vector of culture and civilization, is also to paraphrase the linguist , André Martinet, «a means of communication, a repertoire of thought and a mode of expression». This is why pedagogues never fail to value it since it plays an important role in the field of education. It is necessary, they often recommend, to rely on the language, in student’s life to facilitate the transmission and acquisition of knowledge, particularly during the first years of education. So it is urgent to preserve and watch over these precious treasures whose destiny seems quite fragile, to use the words of this great Icelandic woman. By this gesture, we will spread the culture of tolerance and living together, we will protect ourselves above all against linguistic differences which sometimes turn into armed conflicts. What is currently happening in Ukraine, beyond geostrategic issues, is perhaps also a question of cultural and linguistic intolerance. F. M
