Now in its 28th year, Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival is back to throw open the doors of the city in celebration of Glasgow’s architecture, culture and heritage. Join us 11-17th September to get behind the scenes in some of Glasgow’s iconic historic buildings as well as working factories, breweries, theatres and more. With a whole new history, heritage and archaeology themed programme, featuring hundreds of open buildings, walks, talks, tours, exhibitions, special events and children’s activities, the city is yours to explore! Part of Scotland's Festival of Architecture 2017. • All of our events are FREE to attend, however some need to be booked in advance.* • Booking opens at 10am on 23rd August • Advance booking is required for some building tours, walks, talks and special events – see individual entries for booking instructions. We’ve highlighted key family activities on page 42. A dedicated children’s programme will be distributed to Glasgow primary schools in late August and will also be available online. 6. Garnethill Synagogue 129 Hill Street, G3 6UB 1877-79, John McLeod in consultation with N.S. Joseph (Cat A) Scotland’s first purpose-built Synagogue. As well as continuing to be an active place of workship, the building is the home of the Scottish Jewish Archive Centre and Museum. Glasgow Cathedral Castle Street, G4 0QZ 1197;13th-15th Centuries 19th century Unknown (Cat A) Described as ‘the finest building of the 1200s now surviving in mainland Scotland’ Glasgow Cathedral is built over the burial place of the City’s founder and Patron Saint and is where the City’s Heritage begins. 9. Glasgow Central Mosque 1 Mosque Avenue, G5 9TA 1983-4 Glasgow Central Mosque is the first purpose-built mosque in Scotland. Scotland’s original independent cinema, GFT is housed within the former Cosmo Cinema. Opened in May 1939, this was the last cinema to be built in Glasgow before the outbreak of the Second World War. The Lighthouse 18. Glasgow Sheriff Court 1 Carlton Place, G5 9DA (Sat-Nav G5 9TW) 1986, Keppie Henderson (Cat B) Imposing purpose built courthouse for The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service (SCTS), covers civil and criminal business and is the largest Court in the Estate. 23. Provand’s Lordship 3 Castle Street, G4 0RB 1471 (Cat A) Dating from 1471, Provand’s Lordship is Glasgow’s oldest remaining house which formed part of the Cathedral precinct. Having passed into secular and commercial use, it was saved from demolition by the Provands Lordship Society in the early 20th century. Tues–Sun 10am–5pm. Tours on request; 30 mins.
