WELCOME

CONTENTS

Welcome to the fifth Glasgow Film Festival.

Welcome / Contents

2

The festival has come a long way in a short time. In 2008, we welcomed more than 20,000 people to what has become the fastest growing film event in the United Kingdom. Glasgow is a centre for film production, the base for the nation’s broadcasters, a home for Scottish Screen and BAFTA Scotland and a city with some of the most enthusiastic and adventurous cinemagoers in the land. It has long deserved a truly worldclass film festival and together we are making that dream a reality.

How to enjoy your festival

3

The 2009 festival has something for all tastes from the latest must-see Hollywood triumph to the finest new films from all around the globe. Our retrospective is devoted to the effortless elegance of the late, great Audrey Hepburn. Our special focus on an individual country reveals the wealth of talent in Mexico. The Glasgow Schools Film Festival comes of age with a new title of the Glasgow Youth Film Festival and ambitious plans for workshops and interactive events aimed at capturing the imagination of young film fans and future filmmakers. There is buckets more gore from the FrightFest team, an inspiring celebration of all that is good and exciting about short filmmaking and the sweet sounds of some outstanding music movies. Every aspect of the festival has been modified and expanded for your viewing pleasure.

Viva Mexico!

In times of trouble the cinema is always the first place we turn to for escape. It is a place of daredevil adventure, breathless romance, impossible dreams and happy endings. It can also hold up a mirror to the world, reflecting a piercing reality about everyday lives and telling us extraordinary tales about the joys and woes of being human. This year at Glasgow we hope the films will entertain, astonish, make you think and maybe make you cry but, above all, they will convince you that it is (still) a wonderful life.

Every Little Step

HOW TO ENJOY YOUR FESTIVAL Need help picking which films to watch and at which venue? Or maybe you’re looking for a dinner reservation on Opening Night? Whatever it is you’re looking for, this section is all you need to get the most out of GFF09.

VENUES

The diversity of the programme and our venues mirrors the uniqueness of Glasgow’s cultural scene. From the family friendly Cineworld, the beautiful Art Deco surroundings of Glasgow Film Theatre and the underground creative hub of The Arches, the festival now stretches across 11 city centre venues, so there really is something for everyone. For full venue listings and maps please see p67-68.

SELECTING A FILM

This year’s film selection has been divided into 15 strands to make it easier for you to identify the films which most interest you. Within these strands are our ‘festivals within the festival’: The Youth Film Festival (see p29-30), The Shorts Film Festival (see p23-25) and (new for this year) the Music and Film Festival at The Arches (see p27-28). Each film listing is colour coded and signposted with its appropriate strand throughout this brochure. For full strand descriptions please see p5-6.

OPENING GALA IN THE LOOP

Glasgow born Armando Iannucci is, quite simply, a comic genius. Nobody has done more to elevate the ambition of British comedy. The Thick Of It was his television masterpiece; a bile-ridden satire on the back corridors of British politics that cut so close to the bone that it hurt. In The Loop is not The Thick Of It: The Movie but it is a very close family relative. Tom Hollander’s Simon Foster is the kind of fresh-faced idealist who entered politics because he felt he could make a difference. Now he is secretary of state for the Department of International Development and about to become embroiled in a brewing war in the Middle East. He seems to be against the war but winds up appearing the ideal hawk in the eyes of the American and British governments. Soon he is the toast of Washington, hob-nobbing with Army Major Miller (James Gandolfini) and set to become a helpless innocent thrust into the snake pit of international diplomacy. Naturally, foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi) is never far from the action. Fresh from its world premiere at Sundance in January, we are thrilled to open the 2009 Glasgow Film Festival with the UK premiere of In The Loop - a combination of biting satire and acid wit so close to reality that you will laugh until you cry. Thanks to Optimum

CLOSING GALA LAST CHANCE HARVEY

You are never too old to fall in love. That’s the message of this expert romantic comedy featuring the dream team of multi Oscar-winners Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman. Both stars have received Golden Globe nominations for their performances and it is their magical chemistry that makes Last Chance Harvey that little bit special. Hoffman brings all his rumpled charm to bear on the role of Harvey Shine, an aspiring jazz pianist who barely endures his job as a jingle writer. He arrives in London for his daughter’s wedding. At Heathrow Airport, he brushes against Kate Walker (Thompson), a survey taker who is dealing with her own disappointments which mostly take the form of an exceptionally demanding mother (Eileen Atkins) who fails to accept that Kate needs a life of her own. Excluded from the wedding party and stunned by the news that his daughter has asked her stepfather to march her down the aisle, Harvey is more despondent than ever but maybe when you least expect it life can have a pleasant surprise in store. Warmly witty and surprisingly touching, Last Chance Harvey has a humanity that is often missing from modern comedies. Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson make you believe in the characters and root for cupid’s arrow to find its mark. Last Chance Harvey is a treat for incurable romantics and the UK premiere is our fairytale ending for the 2009 Glasgow Film Festival. Thanks to Momentum

The Desert Within

VIVA MEXICO!

Once upon a time Mexican cinema barely registered on the world’s radar even in the 1950s when the country was making around 150 features each year. Spanish exile Luis Buñuel made waves with his Mexican work, especially Los Olvidados (The Young And The Damned) (1950). Down the years, occasional films did break out and gain attention like Jaime Humberto Hermosillo’s gay charmer Dona Herlinda y su Hijo (Dona Herlinda and Her Son) (1986). Then in 2000 along came Amores Perros (Love’s A Bitch) and Mexican cinema became impossible to ignore. This year the Glasgow Film Festival will focus on the brightest and the best of the Mexican filmmakers set to follow in the footsteps of Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro. Supported by the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografia/Mexican Film Institute (a big thanks to Pablo Briseno Galvan and Alejandro Diaz San Vicente) we will screen a range of features and documentaries that reveal a wealth of talent, ambition and names to mark for the future. AUDREY HEPBURN We chose Audrey as the subject of our 2009 retrospective because in an age of shallow celebrity, global uncertainty and economic gloom she remains a shining beacon of elegance and sophistication. An Oscar-winning star and enduring fashion icon, Audrey had the ability to make it all look so effortless. Of all the great female stars of the 1950s, including Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly, Audrey is the one who remains the most beguiling. The romantic roles in Roman Holiday (1953) and Sabrina (1954) have a tenderness and sincerity that make contemporary romantic comedies look crass and inadequate. Her musicals are simply sublime. The combination of Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Gershwin tunes and Paris locations makes Funny Face (1957) simply irresistible and the perfect choice for a romantic matinee on St. Valentine’s Day. This is a retrospective that celebrates Audrey in all her glory because we will never see her like again and because we love her funny face, her sunny, funny face... Breakfast At Tiffany's

ART AT TRAMWAY

GFF09 is thrilled to announce a new venue partnership with Tramway. Offering a unique space for contemporary visual and performing arts, Tramway is teaming up with GFF09 to showcase artists working in moving image media and animation. Tramway are delighted to present the first exhibition of work in Scotland by Sebastian Beurkner, the London based artist considered to be one of the most innovative working with animation at present. For GFF Sebastian will present an artists’ animation programme. The second event will celebrate the pioneering Black Audio Film Collective who formed in Hackney in 1982 and who were a mix of art, sociology and psychology graduates. Tramway will be showing two of the collectives most seminal film works Handsworth Songs (1986) and Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993), courtesy of Smoking Dogs Films.

SEBASTIAN BUERKNER EXHIBITION

Tramway

For his first solo exhibition in a major UK museum, Buerkner will create a dramatic, large scale installation as a stage for his flash based animations. The artist creates dream like visual narratives which challenge perceptions of space and time and often suggest a duality between the conscious and the subconscious. This process is usually augmented by the use of split screen or multiple, sequential projections which, combined with his use of repetition and stroboscopic editing create an almost hallucinogenic visual experience.

Friday 6 February – Sunday 22 March

ARTISTS’ ANIMATION PROGRAMME INTRODUCED BY SEBASTIAN BEURKNER

Tramway

Free admission

Thursday 19 February 19.30

Sebastian Buerkner will introduce a screening of his recent works alongside animations by leading figures from the avantgarde film movement. The programme will include films by Mary Ellen Bute, Tony & Beverley Conrad and Robert Breer, known for their pioneering animation techniques. Bute made several modernist animations from 1930s onwards which were often broadcast at Radio Music Hall. Tony Conrad is an experimental American artist whose film works are considered to be some of the most influential of the structural film movement and include The Flicker (1966).

THE BLACK AUDIO FILM COLLECTIVE: HANDSWORTH SONGS & SEVEN SONGS FOR MALCOLM X

Tramway

Made in the wake of the 1985 riots in Birmingham and London, Handsworth Songs is considered to be the BAFC’s most widely recognized film. This work contains strong themes of race, class and ideology through its depiction of Caribbean/Asian settlement in 80s Britain. The film has a diverse combination of montage, interview footage, archival material and an experimental soundtrack. Seven Songs for Malcolm X is one of the most stylized works by the BAFC and was revolutionary in bringing elements of feature film production and values into a documentary format. The film looks at the ‘significant silences’ in Malcolm X’s autobiography, such as his Caribbean mother, his ambiguous relationship to America and some of his more controversial activities, such as practice of telepathy whilst in prison. A TO Z 24 City (Er shi si cheng ji)

It’s A Wonderful World

Delicately poised between drama and documentary, Zhang Ke Jia’s latest work examines the fate of a vast munitions plant in Chengdu that is being dismantled to make way for the construction of luxury apartments and the creation of the 24 City of the title. Interviews with genuine former employees are mixed with dramatised testimony to illuminate a situation that is symbolic of the new China: one more incident in a fast changing world as a Communist state moves towards all the uncertainties and unpredictability of a more typical market economy. The Grosvenor Sunday 15 February (18.15) Director Zhang Ke Jia Featuring Jianbin Chen Joan Chen Liping Lu China 2008, 1h47m, 12A Mandarin with subtitles

Marian Quinn’s charming and tender 32A is a semiautobiographical coming-of-age story set in Dublin during 1979. After casting many envious glances at other women’s busts (even the nuns’), 13-year-old Maeve finally gets her first bra, size 32A. To her surprise, she also attracts the attentions of local heartthrob Brian, a wild 16-year-old. Maeve’s so smitten that she abandons her girlfriends at a crucial moment. Snubbed by her friends and in hot water at home, Maeve learns some hard lessons about what’s really important in life. Thanks to Janey Pictures

The Adventures Of Robin Hood

Happy Birthday

Director Marian Quinn Featuring Ailish McCarthy Sophie Jo Wasson Orla Long Riona Smith Ireland 2008, 1h28m, 12A

Cast to perfection, Errol Flynn gives the performance of his career in this definitive, Oscar-winning version of the Robin Hood story. Flynn has just the right combination of wit, devil-may-care charm and righteous anger to portray the bold knight. Olivia De Havilland is a radiant Maid Marian and the breathless, heartstopping climactic duel between Flynn and Basil Rathbone’s Sir Guy Of Gisbourne is rightly considered the finest ever committed to celluloid. This is a classic that deserves to be seen on the big screen. Thanks to BFI

The Age of Stupid

Stranger Than Fiction

This is a drama-meets-documentary that casts Pete Postlethwaite in the role of “the archivist”, alone in the year 2055, one of the last surviving human beings on the climatically devastated planet. The archivist - using his cache of all the world’s broadcast material from past decades - is constructing a digital broadcast for other, future civilisations about why humanity failed to save itself from global warming. The film is anything but a good guys-versus-bad guys polemic; it is angry but nuanced, despairing but also motivating. Thanks to Dogwoof

Am I Black Enough For You?

This fascinating documentary tells the story about 70s Philly soul music artist Billy Paul, the city of Philadelphia and the lifelong companionship between Billy and his wife Blanche. Billy Paul, now in his early seventies was best known is the silky-smooth ballad of infidelity Me & Mrs Jones. Yet Am I Black Enough for You? is so much more than a music documentary as it looks into what makes Paul tick. What’s most fascinating about Billy Paul is his constant appeal to new generations of soul fans. Thanks to Verve Pictures

American Teen

Gala

CCA Friday 20 February (15.00) Director Göran Olsson Sweden 2008, 1h30m, PG

The media loves to demonise the young as knifewielding feral creatures who only come out at night. The reality is very different. American Teen follows four high school seniors in Warsaw Indiana as they face the future and endure the eternal pressures of beckoning adulthood. The characters include arty misfit Hannah, super bitch Megan, nice guy basketball star Colin and super geek Jake. This glossy documentary has all the intensity of your favourite soap opera as it captures the dramatic highs and lows of one of the most vulnerable times in their lives. Thanks to Optimum

Cineworld Renfrew St. Wednesday 18 February (18.45) Thursday 19 February (16.30) Director Nanette Burstein Featuring Hannah Bailey Colin Clemens Geoff Haase UK 2008, 1h35m, 12A

Old rockers never give up on their dreams in this hilarious real-life Spinal Tap charting the bumpy career path of Canadian heavy metal band Anvil. In the 1980s Anvil were so close to megastardom they could taste it. Quarter of a century later, they are still hoping for a big break, recording on the cheap, touring and working at day jobs in Toronto to pay the bills. Sacha Gervasi’s warts-and-all documentary takes an affectionate look at their eternal optimism, dogged determination and frequent personality clashes. Very funny but also a strangely endearing celebration of heavy metal underdogs. Thanks to The Works

Awaydays

Gala

One of the most keenly anticipated British films of 2009, Awaydays is a visceral adaptation of the cult Kevin Sampson novel set in the grim heartland of Thatcher’s England. Paul Carty escapes the drudgery of life through football, fighting and music. Then he meets Elvis and is drawn into the world of The Pack, a gang of football hooligans under the leadership of John Godden (the brilliant Stephen Graham). A new world beckons in a brutal, truthful evocation of an era and the violence and music that defined it. A superb soundtrack features Ultravox, Joy Division and The Cure. Thanks to Optimum 35

Ballast

The State of Independents

One of the most powerful, haunting independent features of the past year, the award-winning Ballast offers a wrenching insight into the heart of a broken America. Charting a shattered family’s response to the suicide and violence that threatens to destroy their last vestiges of hope. Following the death of his twin brother, Lawrence attempts to take his own life. During his convalescence, we learn of his connection to single mother Marlee and her son James. Stunning performances from a largely non-professional cast and the confidence of Hammer’s vision make a deeply affecting humanist tale. Thanks to Celluloid Dreams

Bart Got A Room

The State of Independents

Director Lance Hammer Featuring Michael J.Smith Sr. JimMyron Ross Tarra Riggs USA 2008, 1h36m, 15

Just when you thought teen comedies had lost their charm, Brian Hecker delivers a fresh, funny coming of age gem. Steven Kaplan is Danny, a high school student in sunny Florida desperately seeking a date for his prom. His quest and life are complicated by the fact that his recently divorced parents (William H Macy and Cheryl Hines) have started dating again and everyone is having more success than him - even king of the losers Bart has a date and a hotel room. This is a hilarious, sweet-natured comedy for anyone who has ever been an anxious adolescent. Thanks to Bleiberg Entertainment

Bigger, Stronger, Faster

Stranger than Fiction

Director Brian Hecker Featuring William H Macy Steven Kaplan Cheryl Hines USA 2008, 1h20m, 15

America is the land of Super Size ambition. It wants its athletes to run faster, jump further and achieve more but then reacts in horror when they use performanceenhancing substances. Chris Bell’s hugely entertaining documentary emulates the wit and insight of Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock as he investigates the use of steroids by American athletes. He starts with his own family and gradually expands the focus to implicate everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to George W Bush. Playful and poignant with an excellent use of tongue-in-cheek music tracks. Thanks to Verve Pictures

Blue Eyelids (Parpados Azules)

Viva Mexico!

Director Christopher Weekes Featuring Noni Hazlehurst Steve Rodgers Matthew Newton Australia 2008, 1h30m, 15

Winner of a Special Jury prize at Sundance, Blue Eyelids is a moving Mexican romance with a hint of the Italian favourite Bread And Tulips. Marina is a mousey factory worker in Mexico City who wins the company raffle of a holiday for two to the idyllic resort of Playa Salamandra. Her boss describes it as an opportunity for happiness but it only serves to remind Marina of how isolated she has become. A chance meeting with former schoolmate Victor inspires her to invite him on her dream holiday. They seem made for each other but will these two lonely souls take a chance on love? Beautifully acted by the two stars this is a delicately handled, life-affirming tale of loneliness and longing. Thanks to Axiom Films

Breakfast At Tiffany’s

Audrey Hepburn

Director Ernesto Contreras Featuring Cecilia Suárez Enrique Arreola Ana Ofelia Murguia Mexico 2008, 1h38m, 12A Spanish with subtitles

An Oscar-nominated Audrey Hepburn gives one of her most enchanting performances in this irresistible adaptation of the Truman Capote novella. Her Holly Golightly is a wonderful free spirit who lights up the room in her little black dress and stylish cigarette holder. She is also a lost, lonely soul, crooning the dreamy Moon River from her apartment window and reaching out to neighbour George Peppard who is torn between the urgings of his heart and the financial comfort of his relationship with the wealthy Patricia Neal. A timeless heartbreaker that is always worth revisiting. Thanks to BFI/Paramount

GFT Monday 16 February (13.45) Tuesday 17 February (18.00)

Bronson

Gala

Not since Robert De Niro’s Oscar-winning performance in Raging Bull has an actor shown such a physical and emotional commitment to his character as Tom Hardy does in Bronson. He commands the screen with ferocious daring in a grotesquely stylised biography of Charles Bronson, the man the press has dubbed the most violent prisoner in Britain. Unfolding as a flamboyant theatrical spectacle, this plays like a Ken Russell version of A Sense Of Freedom and is absolutely, positively not for the faint-hearted. Thanks to Vertigo Films 37

It’s A Wonderful World

An impressive and moving debut feature from Christopher Weekes, Bitter & Twisted has a raw emotional power and a rivetting central performance from Australian veteran Noni Hazlehurst (Monkey Grip, Little Fish, Candy). The setting is sun-kissed suburban Sydney and the focus is on a family frozen in grief over the premature death of a young son. Unable to express their feelings, family members drift through loneliness and heartbreak in search of something or someone to give meaning back to their lives. This a well-observed film infused with the sting of truth. Thanks to Odin’s Eye Entertainment

Burn The Bridges (Quemar las naves)

Viva Mexico!

Theatre director Francisco Franco makes an awardwinning feature debut notable for his sure-footed approach and a story that grips from start to finish. Nineteen year-old Helena is devoted to her dying mother Eugenia, a former pop singer. Helena’s younger brother Sebastian is strongly attracted to Juan, the new boy at his Catholic-run school. The heady swirl of death, desire and the yearning for a brighter future are handled with a confidence and style that Almodovar might admire. Thanks to the Mexican Film Institute

The Burning Plain

Viva Mexico!

Director Francisco Franco Featuring Irene Azuela Ramon Valdes Ángel Onésimo Nevares Mexico 2008, 1h42m, 15 Spanish with subtitles

The award-winning screenwriter of Amores Perros and Babel, Guillermo Arriaga moves into the director’s chair with a poignant, elegantly handled melodrama revealing the bonds that unite a group of disparate characters. Charlize Theron gives an award-calibre performance as Sylvia, the self-destructive manager of an upmarket restaurant in Portland, Oregon. In New Mexico, Kim Basinger’s Gina has been embroiled in a passionate affair that leaves her daughter Marina puzzling over the breakdown of her parents marriage. If Mamma Mia and High School Musical had you dancing in the aisles then prepare to be swept along by the crowd-pleasing charm and toe-tapping energy of Cape No.7, the most successful Taiwanese film ever made. Having failed in his big dream to become a pop idol Aga (Van) returns to the coastal town of Hangchun and takes a job as a postman. Captain Blood

Happy Birthday

A star is born as the young Errol Flynn swashbuckles his way through a rip-roaring adventure yarn. A late replacement for Robert Donat, newcomer Flynn displays all the mischievous charm and daredevil athleticism that would make him one of the great names of Hollywood’s golden age. Flynn is a respectable English surgeon pushed into a life of piracy by cruel fate and rank injustice. Olivia De Havilland is the fair lady who captures his eye in the first of eight films they would make together. Muscular direction from Michael (Casablanca) Curtiz, rousing music by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and a splendid duel between Flynn and Basil Rathbone make this an enduring screen classic. Charade

Is this the greatest thriller that Hitchcock never made? The dream team of Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant exude effortless elegance in a wonderfully witty, edge of the seat suspense story that unfolds in impossibly glamorous locations from the French Alps to the rooftops of Paris. Hepburn is the wide-eyed innocent at the centre of a diabolical plot. Her husband has been murdered and a rogue’s gallery of unsavoury characters are chasing after her to get their grubby paws on the valuables he left behind. Who can she trust? Even the suave Grant isn’t above suspicion in this Oscarnominated classic. Thanks to Universal

Inspired by Ozu’s masterpiece Tokyo Story, Doris Dorrie’s profoundly touching tale is so perfectly told and delicately understated that it appears effortless. When Trudi (Hannelore Elsner) learns that her civil servant husband Rudi (Elmar Wepper) has a fatal illness, she persuades him to visit their son in Japan and undertake a pilgrimage to her beloved Mount Fuji. The journey contains unexpected developments and tragedy along the way in a film that revels in the small pleasures of life and all the important details that we too often take for granted. The State of Independents

Katherine is a typical teenager and today is her funeral. The four adults in her life have a lot on their mind - and it’s not all about Katherine either. With a frankness that’s strikingly disarming as well as frequently self-serving, the grown-ups struggle with being grown-up. Written and directed by Charlie Levi, this feature captures the raw and often selfish emotions of the disparate group of mourners, played beautifully by an outstanding cast. Audrey Hepburn

Reunited with her Roman Holiday director William Wyler, Audrey Hepburn tackles one of her most challenging dramatic roles in this ground-breaking adaptation of the Lillian Hellman play dramatically illustrating the way that careless talk can ruin lives. Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine are both respected teachers at a girl’s school. A spiteful child’s malicious suggestion that there is more to their relationship than just friendship provokes soul-searching and heartache for all the injured parties in a frank, pioneering exploration of human sexuality, prejudice and the longings of a lonely heart. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival Palme D’Or, The Class is an utterly captivating portrait of a year in the life of a multi-ethnic Parisian school. Inspired by real events and featuring real pupils and teachers, it is a compelling drama honed from acute observations of everyday life. François Bégaudeau wrote a book about his teaching experiences. Now, he plays François in a film that captures all the volatility of a caring, imperfect professional committed to teaching a classroom of 14 and 15 year-olds who can be cheeky, challenging, confrontational and even soul-destroying in their negativity. “The purpose of architecture is to create timeless, free, joyous spaces for all activities in life.” John Lautner

The first large-scale exhibition devoted to this innovative American architect opens at The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture and Design this March. Tracing Lautner’s work over a 50-year journey, the exhibition features over 70 original drawings and newly commissioned models, alongside short films by award winning filmmaker, Murray Grigor.

Zakes and Beth are driving along the motorway when they accidentally cut across a white van. Suddenly the chase is on, the van’s boot bursts open and they catch a glimpse of a bound and gagged woman. An Iolaire In association with BAFTA Scotland

Great Scots The Mitchell Theatre Thursday 19 February (19.00)

The sinking of the HMY Iolaire remains the worst peacetime maritime disaster in British waters, and yet is widely unknown outside the Western Isles. Over two hundred troops from Lewis and Harris were lost as they returned home on leave from WW1. This compelling documentary includes interviews with survivors and members of the communities for whom this tragedy drew a dark blanket for generations, alongside first time underwater footage of the wreck itself.

An Iolaire was produced for BBC ALBA by the BBC UK 2008, 1h, PG Gaelic with subtitles

Michael Caine has long been one of the wonders of the British film industry. He never gives a bad performance but here he is on exceptional form giving a subtle, endearing depiction of Clarence, an elderly magician and widower reluctantly taking up residence in an old folks home run by Anne-Marie Duff and husband David Morrissey. The establishment’s saving grace is the couple’s 11 year-old son Edward (Bill Milner from Son Of Rambow), a lonely lad obsessed with the possibility of life after death. The unexpected bond between the morbid young boy and the grumpy old man is the basis of a poignant drama from Boy A director John Crowley. Thanks To Optimum

Director John Crowley Featuring Michael Caine Bill Milner Anne-Marie Duff UK 2008, 1h32m, PG

A brutal, gripping insight into the world of the ‘child soldier’, Johnny Mad Dog is a gut-wrenching scream from the heart. Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Emmanuel Dongala, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s unforgettable film centres on Johnny Mad Dog (Christophe Minie), a fifteen year-old boy in an unnamed African country who is already a veteran of war. He operates in a land where children are transformed into killing machines with little hope of escaping a cycle of violence. The focus is also on Laokole (Daisy Victoria Vandy) whose struggle to reach the safety of the city prompts an uncharacteristic act of compassion from Johnny Mad Dog. Thanks to Momentum Pictures

A wry comedy about the chaos of life in an occupied territory sounds an impossible challenge but writerdirector Rashid Masharawi has achieved it with great charm and gentle wit. Abua Laila is a judge who has been invited to practise in Palestine. Bureaucracy has yet to provide him with the correct papers so he supports his family by driving a taxi. Today, he has promised to return home with a cake for his daughter’s birthday but it is a day of complication, danger and humiliation that seems designed to frustrate all his good intentions. Lake Tahoe (¿Te acuerdas de Lake Tahoe?)

The second feature from Duck Season director Fernando Eimbcke is an expert exercise in quirky, minimalist wit that suggests a strong affinity with Aki Kaurismaki. Juan crashes the family car. His search for a replacement distributor harness is the start of a long, hot afternoon punctuated by quirky encounters with aging mechanic Don Heber and his dog, martial-arts fanatic David and young mother Lucia. Dry wit and a sharp eye mark this sleepy, well-observed insight into a life that is just as stalled as the car. Thanks to Yume Pictures

Let The Right One In (Lat den Ratte Komma In)

If the astonishing success of Twilight has left you in the mood for a truly eerie, atmospheric vampire story then the award-winning Let The Right One In is only too happy to oblige. Based on a bestselling novel, this macabre, beautifully filmed production is reminiscent of The Orphanage in the way it invests a familiar story with striking originality. 12 year-old Oskar is a constant victim of school bullies who longs for a friend to ease his pain. His dreams are answered by the arrival of new neighbours with a pale, interesting young girl, Eli, who only seems to come out at night. Thanks to Momentum

The List Surprise Film

Last year, Glasgow audiences were the first in the country to savour the crowd-pleasing Son Of Rambow. In 2007, we left you bewitched, bothered and bewildered by David Lynch’s mesmerising Inland Empire. A high standard has been set that we feel duty bound to maintain in 2009. All we can promise is that the surprise film will be brand new and will arrive from a far corner of the globe that could be Aberdeen or might be Kazakhstan. There are no clues on this page but there again maybe there are. Just have a little faith and you will not be disappointed.

Los Ladrones Viejos

In Mexico Efrain Alcaraz, alias El Carrizos, was notorious as the King Of The Zorreros. A petty thief with an impeccable sense of honour, he could burgle a house without leaving a trace of his presence. In the 1970s he even burgled the home of Mexico’s President. His greatest enemy was a secret service agent known as Dracula. They worked hand in hand for a time before betraying each other. Everardo González’s riveting documentary combines archive footage, testimony of the two adversaries and some wonderful anecdotes from El Carrizos that leave you pondering whether the crook or the cop was the biggest thief. Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn may not be everyone’s idea of a Cockney guttersnipe but she is every inch the image of an exquisite lady once the ugly duckling has been transformed into a gorgeous swan. Nosferatu With live musical accompaniment

Film and Music GFT Friday 13 February (21.00)

Murnau’s horror film based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula is set in Transylvania and Germany, but there’s a good reason for a Scottish voice to lead us through the narrative. Back in 1888 Emily Gerard, a travel writer from Airdrie, was the first person to bring the word ‘nosferatu’ or ‘undead’ into European awareness when she wrote about Transylvanian superstitions in her essay ‘The Land Beyond The Forest’. Using live music, samples, sound effects and ‘the voice’ of Emily Gerard as narrator played by Anne Marie Watson, David Allison’s version of Nosferatu is an entertaining, eerie and original take on one of cinema’s true classics. Our view of Australian cinema has been shaped by films like Picnic At Hanging Rock and Newsfront but there was another, less respectable side to the country’s film production in the 1970s that has never received its due respect - until now. Not Quite Hollywood is an irreverent, rip-roaring journey through Ozploitation B-movies that usually served up lashings of sex, gore, full frontal nudity, bad taste, Hollywood has-beens and the odd future star like Mel Gibson. When a theatre director is abandoned by his wife he throws himself into the creation of a careerdefining masterpiece that consumes decades of his life, includes a virtual recreation of Manhattan and captures parallels and alternative versions of his own story. A bravura performance from Hoffman graces this funny and moving tale about being human. Thanks to Revolver Entertainment BUY TICKETS ONLINE AT WWW.GLASGOWFILMFESTIVAL.ORG.UK

It’s A Wonderful World

Three Australian naval officers. Twenty-four hours shore leave before being shipped to Iraq. The bright lights and many temptations of Sydney. Those are the key ingredients that acclaimed new writer/director Matthew Newton weaves into a smart, bittersweet drama that has been winning prizes around the world. Dean plans to see his fiancee and have a good time. Sam just wants to stay out of trouble. The best laid plans unfold and unravel in a tightly structured tale where the bright wit conceals some dark truths. Thanks to Odin’s Eye Entertainment

Stranger Than Fiction

Cineworld Renfrew St Tuesday 17 February (16.30) Director Matthew Newton Featuring Ewen Leslie Toby Schmitz Matthew Newton Australia 2008, 1h34m, 15

Every year thousands of new-age therapy fans head three miles north of Molkom to the two week No Mind Festival in Angsbacka, northern Sweden. They can participate in a roster of activities including fire-walking, sweat lodges, tantric sex sessions and tree-hugging. This hilarious, warm-spirited documentary follows one group of devotees that includes an ageing lothario, fragile Finnish grandmother Mervi, happy hippy Lijus and deeply cynical Australian rugby coach Nick. Told with a light touch, this captures the lazy, hazy days of summer and every aspect of their experience from the sublime to the frankly ridiculous. Thanks to Metrodome

Tokyo!

Gala

Paris Je T’Aime (GFF07) and Chacun Son Cinema (GFF08) revealed the fantastic cinema that results when a group of worldclass filmmakers are let loose on a set subject. Tokyo! invites directors Michel Gondry, Leos Carax and Bong Joon-ho to reveal their take on the city. Gondry’s Interior Design is a hilarious coming-of-age tale as two naive artists move to the big city. Carax’s Merde is a surreal slapstick re-working of Godzilla with Denis Lavant emerging from the sewers to terrorise the populace. Bong Joon-ho evokes the spirit of Murakami with a love story in which a recluse finds his ten years of solitude interrupted by a pretty delivery girl and an earthquake. Only in Tokyo. It’s A Wonderful World

Director Andrzej Jakimowski Featuring Damian Ul Ewelina Walendziak Rafal Guzniczak Poland 2007, 1h36m, PG Polish with subtitles

The first feature from documentary filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy was one of the prize-winning discoveries at Cannes in 2008 and is an utter delight. Asa has returned from military service to the remote steppes of southern Kazakhstan. His dream is to become a shepherd. His first priority is to find a wife and Tulpan is the only candidate. She thinks his ears are too big despite photographic evidence that they are smaller than those of Prince Charles. As Asa proves himself a worthy suitor and an able shepherd, the film’s depiction of landscape, livestock and the unpredictable elements all add to this exuberant, life-affirming comedy. Stranger Than Fiction

Everyone has an opinion about Mike Tyson. Is he the greatest boxer the world has ever seen or The Baddest Man On The Planet? Director James Toback has known Tyson for twenty years and his sympathetic documentary puts his friend in the psychiatrist’s chair for a ninety-minute session. Tyson recalls the poverty and hardships of his childhood, the influence of his first trainer and the way boxing gave structure and pride to his life. The film also addresses the notoriety of a man with an addictive personality and a conviction for rape. Candid, funny and compelling this is a film that doesn’t pull any punches. The Unborn

Sometimes the soul of a dead person has been so tainted with evil that it is denied entrance to heaven. It must endlessly wander the borderlands between worlds, desperately searching for a new body to inhabit. And sometimes it succeeds. Writer/director David S.Goyer (Blade:Trinity, Batman Begins) gives a terrifying glimpse into the life of the undead in this supernatural thriller that follows a young woman played by Odette Yustman (Cloverfield) pulled into a world of nightmares when a demonic spirit haunts her and threatens everyone she loves. Screen legend Gary Oldman (True Romance) top lines as Rabbi Sendak in this latest Hollywood horror. Thanks to Universal

Rescued from a massacre, Kiowa Indian Hepburn is raised as white by her benefactors. When her true identity is revealed, the news tears at the heart of her adopted family and makes her an object of widespread bigotry that spills over into armed conflict. Jackie Kennedy married Onassis in a Valentino gown whilst Audrey Heburn, Sophia Loren, Gwyneth Paltrow and Elizabeth Taylor are among the screen giants who have all glowed in Valentino. This fascinating documentary follows Valentino in the period between his 70th birthday and his final couture show. The late Guillaume Depardieu gives one of his best performances in this plaintive drama focusing on the people who struggle for survival on the margins of mainstream society. What would you sacrifice for the one you love? The question becomes a heartbreaking dilemma for teenager Sara in this provocative drama that is Denmark’s candidate for the Oscar. Sara is a Jehovah’s Witness with a passionate commitment to her faith and her family. When she meets Teis it is love at first sight but Ties is a non-believer and her church elders consider their relationship unacceptable. Based on true events, this takes a fair-minded and thought-provoking approach to explosive issues and features potent performances from the central duo. Thanks to the Danish Film Institute

You heard them playing on the Beach Boys hits, on the Mamas and the Papas’ recordings, on Frank Sinatra records, on Monkees’ singles and they were Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound. They have performed on more number one singles than the Beatles. Hal Blaine, Carole Kaye, Tommy Tedesco, Glen Campbell, Earl Palmer, these are a few members of the Wrecking Crew. Tedesco’s son, Denny Tedesco, knew it well enough to see that it had to be told to more than a small circle of friends.
