WELCOME Welcome to the sixth Glasgow Film Festival. There is a famous story about Cary Grant that remains irresistible. In the era before Google and Wikipedia, a penny-pinching journalist wanted to know the great star’s age. Determined to use as few words as possible, he dispatched a telegram to Grant’s agent, brazenly demanding: “How old Cary Grant?” Grant just happened to see the telegram and sent a breezy reply stating: “Old Cary Grant fine. How you?”

The 2010 Glasgow Film Festival is our sixth edition and we too are just fine as we pay tribute to Cary Grant in this year’s retrospective. The Festival continues to attract ever increasing audience numbers, welcoming more than 28,000 people from near and far in 2009. This year human and financial resources have been stretched to the limit in preparing a Festival bursting at the seams with premieres, special screenings, unique events and amazing guests. The Glasgow Youth Film Festival has films to inspire and delight. Departures celebrates the rising talents in Japanese cinema and pays tribute to Akira Kurosawa. We celebrate the links between fashion and film, music and movies, Scotland and the wider world. The FrightFest team return to make your flesh crawl and the Short Film Festival provides unparalleled chances to gather and gaze, network and nourish. VENUES

The diversity of the programme and our venues mirrors the uniqueness of Glasgow’s cultural scene. From the family friendly Cineworld, the beautiful Art Deco surroundings of Glasgow Film Theatre and iconic music venues throughout the city, the festival now stretches across 17 city venues, so there really is something for everyone. SELECTING A FILM

The film selection has been divided into 15 strands to make it easier for you to identify the films which most interest you. Within these strands are our ‘festivals within the festival:’ The Youth Film Festival (see p19), the Short Film Festival (see p17) and the Music and Film Festival, co-curated with our friends at the Arches (see p16). Each film listing is colour coded and signposted with its appropriate strand throughout this brochure. For full strand descriptions please see p6.

ACCOMMODATION AND RESTAURANT OFFERS

We always strive to keep our ticket prices as low as possible and want to make sure the festival is accessible to everyone in terms of cost – we don’t bump up the prices just because it’s festival time! So alongside being able to purchase tickets from only £4 you can also take advantage of some great accommodation and restaurant deals. Tickets for free events will only be issued on the day, from the venue where the event is being held. Please note that all films and events will start at the stated times – no adverts will be screened.

Certification

Films not certified by the BBFC are marked N/C and accompanied by an age recommendation i.e. N/C 15 + (suitable for ages 15 and older, no-one under 15 will be admitted).

How to buy tickets IN ADVANCE

ONLINE From 11am on 21 January tickets for all events can be purchased from the website: www.glasgowfilmfestival.org.uk. Tickets can be purchased online until 9pm the day before the performance for all participating venues, excluding GFT. Tickets for GFT events can be purchased online up until 1 hr before the performance. IN PERSON & OVER THE PHONE From 21 January you can purchase tickets for most events from the central GFF Box Office at GFT during opening hours (see below for full box office details). COLLECTION You can collect your advance tickets from the GFF central box office at GFT up until 9pm the day before the performance. On the day of the event, tickets must be picked up at the venue where the film is being shown or the event is being held.

ON THE DAY

ONLINE Only tickets for GFT events can be purchased online through www.glasgowfilmfestival.org.uk on the day of the event - up until 1 hour before the performance. Jean-Pierre Jeunet has been dazzling and delighting audiences for thirty years. Delicatessen, the beloved Amelie and A Very Long Engagement are all perfect examples of his ability to harness an amazing visual imagination to the most romantic, magical storytelling. His latest charmer is a beguiling salute to all the dreamers and rebels ready to take a stand against outrageous injustices and fight for lost causes. It is a film that lifts the spirits and brings a great big smile to your face. Dany Boon was anointed France’s hottest comedy star after the runaway success of Welcome To The Sticks (Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis). He stars as Bazil, a man who was orphaned as a youngster after his soldier father was killed by a roadside bomb. Now, Bazil has been hit by a stray bullet and begun to think the arms industry holds a personal grudge against him. Ex-con Placard (Jean-Pierre Marielle) offers him a helping hand and a fresh start among a group of kindred spirits living outside mainstream society. It is a chance to build his own sense of family, fight for what he believes is right and take an ingeniously executed, hilarious revenge against the arms manufacturers.

CLOSING GALA LEGACY

Glasgow-based production company Black Camel Pictures has emerged as an ambitious new force in Scottish filmmaking. Their zesty chiller Outpost was the very definition of a guilty pleasure and a sequel is already on the way. Taut psychological thriller Legacy is an even more enterprising production that sees them joining forces with British/Nigerian director Thomas Ikimi who caught the eye with his debut feature Limbo (2004). The Wire star Idris Elba is the executive producer and lead actor in a tale that provides him with the kind of demanding role that actors dream about. Elba stars as Black Ops soldier Malcolm Gray. Having barely survived a botched mission in Eastern Europe, he takes sanctuary in a Brooklyn motel room. Brooding on the guilty legacy of his past actions, he replays events in his mind as he focuses on the seemingly inexorable rise of his smooth-talking brother Darnell (Eamonn Walker), a ruthlessly ambitious, fear-mongering senator with his sights firmly set on the White House. Paranoia, vengeance and the possibility of salvation prove a lethal cocktail in a film infused with potent echoes of cinema classics The Manchurian Candidate and Taxi Driver. 19 - 21 February 2010 Scotland’s leading independent short film programmers The Magic Lantern returns for a third year with a core competition programme celebrating emerging international filmmakers whose innovative, experimental and rulebreaking work introduces them as the strong new voices of cinema. This year GSFF introduces a Best International Short Film Award, judged by a jury of international and local guests, with all 33 invited filmmakers competing for the cash prize. We are delighted to present for the first time in the UK a retrospective of the unstoppable American low-budget collective COURT 13, and two extraordinary screenings of films, made in 1988 and 1972, revisited and remade in 2009 by artist Cynthia Beatt and GFF favourite Murray Grigor. We bring you guest-curated programmes by the likes of Radio Magnetic and New Media Scotland, and we have teamed up with LUX, Central Station, RSAMD and Skillset Screen Academy to stage workshops for both filmmakers and visual artists; parties from LuckyMe, Radio Magnetic, Huntleys & Palmers and Optimo; and even a mobile cinema in a caravan. Art at Tramway Tramway is delighted to present Duncan Campbell’s first major exhibition in Scotland, Make it new John (22 January - 14 March 2010) a new film co-commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella, Chisenhale, Tramway and The Model, Sligo. Based on the life of American car engineer John Delorean, and the story of the failed car plant he set up in Northern Ireland in the 1980s, this ambitious work witnesses Campbell’s increasing maturity and confidence as a filmmaker, with particular interest in the problematic relationship of truth and fiction in the documentary realm. Who doesn’t envy his suave manner, his impeccable sartorial style, his easy wit, his perfect timing and the effortless grace under pressure displayed evading a sinister crop duster on a lonely highway or a frisky leopard on a wild goose chase? Who doesn’t respond to his playful banter, the unerring chivalry in his every action and the romantic twinkle in the merry depth of his eyes? He remains the perfect movie star and was one of the finest actors from Hollywood’s Golden Age with a talent that flourished in screwball comedies and ripping adventure yarns, sophisticated thrillers and the most tender of romances. DEPARTURES: NEW JAPANESE CINEMA The 2009 Oscars were a triumph for Japanese cinema with Departures (Okuribito) winning Best Foreign Film and The House Of Small Cubes (Tsumiki no le) chosen as Best Animated Short. Japan has a vibrant film culture that stretches from Ozu and Mizoguchi to Kitano and Koreeda yet surprisingly few Japanese films ever secure British distribution. The heartwarming Departures is just the tip of the iceberg and this year’s Glasgow Film Festival has curated a focus on new Japanese cinema importing a selection of titles that can only be seen in Glasgow. Our selections vary across genre, style and subject from the polished period thriller Zero Focus based on the classic murder mystery by Seicho Matsumoto and Island Of Dreams, an astonishing cinemascope debut feature from Tsuta Tetsuichiro, to the wild and wonderful Yatterman, the latest offering from cult director Takashi Miike. March 2010 marks the centenary of the birth of Akira Kurosawa, an anniversary we celebrate with a rare screening of his epic Ran. Kurosawa is the director who introduced many international audiences to Japanese cinema. A TO Z 1234 Giles Borg’s impressive debut feature casts a wry eye over the dramas and disappointments of anyone who has ever dreamed of forming their own band. Wannabe musician Stevie works in a call centre with his drummer pal Neil. Guitarist Billy and bass player Emily are the eager recruits they attract to their latest venture. We follow the band’s progress in segments bearing the name of a track title (‘Track Two. Anyone Can Play Guitar’ etc). The result is a slight but endearing British charmer with sharply observed performances from a fine young cast, a sprinkling of easygoing humour and a light touch.

BEETLE QUEEN CONQUERS TOKYO It may sound like a cult B-movie from the glory days of Godzilla but Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo is actually a lyrical, spellbinding documentary on Japan’s fascination with insects. All children have a ghoulish attraction to creepy crawlies but in Japan it seems like a national pasttime. Director Jessica Oreck is an entomologist at the Museum Of Natural History in New York and her first feature has all the curiosity and wonder of a true enthusiast. She encourages experts and authors to trace the cultural history of Japan’s love affair with insects and captures enthralling footage of the children, collectors and sellers who have taken the bugs to their hearts.

BERGFEST (WITHOUT YOU I’M NOTHING) Made for just €50,000 in ten days, Bergfest is an exemplary piece of low-budget, independent filmmaking from writer/ director Florian Eichinger. The eerie silence and snow-covered vastness of the Bavarian Alps provides an atmospheric setting for an intense family drama with echoes of Thomas Vinterberg’s Festen. 25 year-old Hannes is on a mountaineering trip with his girlfriend when they stop at a little family hut that is supposed to be deserted. Instead, he discovers his father and his girlfriend. Conditions make it impossible to leave yet bad feelings make it undesirable to stay as father and son have not met in eight years.

BEYOND THE POLE As urgent as An Inconvenient Truth but with a few more belly laughs, Beyond The Pole is a comical mockumentary with an eco-agenda. Determined to make their contribution to the fight against global warming, amateur explorers Stephen Mangan and Rhys Thomas decide to embark on the first carbon neutral, vegetarian and organic expedition to the North Pole. The fact that they have no experience or common sense is not going to stop them. Robert D. Siegel wrote the tangy script for Mickey Rourke’s heartrending comeback in The Wrestler. He brings a similar sympathy for the lone, misfit outsider to his impressive directorial debut. Patton Oswald stars as Paul, a thirtysomething garage attendant living at home with his mother. His life revolves around an obsessive devotion to the New York Giants and his frequent calls to the local sports radio show. He is their number one fan, so it seems entirely appropriate that he follow his favourite Giants player into New York for a night on the town that has all kinds of unpleasant consequences. A quirky, expertly realised character drama.

BLUEBEARD (BARBE BLEUE) Catherine Breillat creates her own darkly distinctive version of the Charles Perrault fairytale in this compelling account of sisterly love and a shocking serial killer. In 1950s France, a young girl torments her older sister by reading the story of the notorious Bluebeard. We are then transported back in time where two teenage sisters are left penniless orphans by the death of their father. Marriage to the local squire is an attractive option although the sudden disappearance of his previous wives is a worry and there is a sinister room that nobody must enter. Thus an elegant slice of grand guignol unfolds.

BOMBER Paul Cotter’s wonderfully droll little gem of a road movie marks his first feature after a number of eye-catching shorts. It is notable for its polished visuals, dry wit and expert central performances. Alastair is in his eighties and has decided to personally apologise to the residents of a small German village that he accidentally bombed during World War 2. A road trip is planned with his wife Valerie but when Alastair proves a less than reliable driver their son Ross is bullied into the role. BURNING: MOGWAI & LIVE DJ SET Glasgow-based musicians Mogwai present a black and white concert film, capturing their unique layered rock sound. Burning is directed by two people responsible for some of the best music video in the industry. Shot over three nights in Brooklyn, the imagery of the film is artistic and beautiful. Band members are almost motionless as soft melody inevitably gives in to the cacophony of distortion and raw emotion the band are famed for. CHOPIN: DESIRE FOR LOVE (CHOPIN. PRAGNIENIE MILOSCI) Widely recognised as one of the most historically accurate films on the life of Frederic Chopin, Chopin: Desire For Love offers a remarkable combination of gorgeous images and an impeccable soundtrack of great performances from the finest classical artists including Polish virtuoso Janusz Olejniczak, Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax and Yukio Yokoyama. The heart of the film is the relationship between Chopin (Piotr Adamczyk) and the feminist author Aurore Dupin (Danuta Stenka) better known as George Sand. COMRADE COUTURE with SWG3 & NOIR! Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, fashionable East Berliners created a fantasy world that was not available on state stocked wardrobes and clothing retailers. This fascinating documentary examines the perils of an industry taken for granted in the west, and has the insight of both director Wilms – labelled an ‘enemy of the state’ as a teenager - and stylist Frank Schafer. This personal account is at times very touching, and also very thrilling – a constant fear of arrest hangs over the scene. The screening is followed by a grand fashion show staged by Noir! and a warehouse party reflecting the theme of the film.

CON ARTIST “Modern art is a con,” Mark Kostabi once said, “and I am the world’s greatest con artist.” Michael Sladek’s documentary certainly provides the proof of the pudding as it offers a witty profile of the disgraced enfant terrible of the New York art scene. Kostabi had a hunger for fame and attention in the 1980s that makes Jordan looking like a shy, retiring violet. He made no secret of the fact that he employed people to supply bright ideas, passed those on to skilled painters and then made his sole contribution of adding a signature to the finished canvas. A CONGREGATION OF GHOSTS Edward Woodward’s film career included outstanding performances in The Wicker Man and Breaker Morant. Inspired by true events, plaintive British feature A Congregation Of Ghosts gave him a final great role as the Reverend Densham. In 1932, Densham returned from missionary work in India to begin his pastoral duties in the remote Cornish village of Warleggan on Bodmin Moor. His fierce piety soon alienated the local congregation and he became an isolated, increasingly eccentric figure. In 1967, new owners arrive at the Rectory to discover that Densham continues to haunt the area.

Filmmaker Gustave Reininger befriended the poet Gregory Corso during the last years of his life. When Corso’s good friend and contemporary Allen Ginsberg died in 1997, Corso became the last of the Beat generation poets. Reininger’s award-winning documentary follows him to Europe as he revisits some of his favourite haunts of the 1950s and we learn the story of his life. Corso was born in 1930 and always believed that his mother had abandoned him. The true story of her actions is incredibly moving and is a key part of an enthralling documentary on the man that Ginsberg called “ the poet’s poet”.

We are delighted to welcome Kevin and the University of Aberdeen to Glasgow for this special event to explore his career and current projects, including The Eagle of the Ninth (2010), starring Jamie Bell and Donald Sutherland, filmed on locations across Scotland.

DO IT AGAIN Geoff Edgers is a newspaper reporter fearing the onset of his 40th birthday when he decides to find the surviving members of the Kinks – and convince them to reunite. The words ‘Tall’ and ‘Order’ come to mind, but also the words ‘Sunny’ and ‘Afternoon’ – just one of the many beautiful tracks from an impressive back catalogue. Despite the difficulty of the task, Geoff secures meetings with other Kinks fans including Sting, REM guitarist Peter Buck and Zooey Deschanel. The film is made by the capable hands of Robert Patton-Spruill, who also made the Public Enemy documentary, Welcome to the Terrordrome.

DOGTOOTH (KYNODONTAS) Winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard at Cannes, Dogtooth offers a merciless, deadpan satire of middle-class respectability. Kept under the thumb of ruthlessly controlling parents, three teenagers are confined to an isolated country estate lest they be contaminated by contact with the wider world. There is an imaginary brother whose sorry fate is meant to be a lesson to them all. The only outsider to enter their estate is a woman hired to satisfy the son’s natural urges. Her presence fans the flame of resistance as sex becomes the utimate act of rebellion.

DOUBLE TAKE In life Alfred Hitchcock couldn’t resist sly cameo appearances in his best thrillers. DOWN TERRACE Imagine if Mike Leigh had made The Sopranos and shot it in eight days at his parents house with a cast that mixed cutting-edge comedy stars with members of his own family and you begin to have the measure of Down Terrace. Ben Wheatley’s award-winning debut feature focuses on a father and son who are both just out of prison and desperate to discover who sold them out. The paranoia grows and the body count rises in a darkly unsettling kitchen sink comedy laced with the blackest of humour. “It’s just a film about work really,” claims Wheatley, “work which happens to be criminal.”

ECCENTRICITIES OF A BLONDE-HAIRED GIRL (SINGULARIDADES DE UMA RAPARIGA LOURA) The remarkable Manoel de Oliveira is 101 years old and has been making films for over seventy years. His latest is based on a short story by Eca de Queiros and is a typically slim, elegant reflection on that old devil called love. De Oliveira’s grandson Ricardo Trepa stars as Macario, a Lisbon accountant who becomes infatuated with the beautiful blonde girl he spies in the widow across the street. Infatuation leads to obsession but Macario is an old-fashioned romantic, bound by social codes that seem more appropriate to a Jane Austen novel than a 21st century suitor and he discovers that the path of true love is strewn with obstacles. EVERYBODY’S FINE Robert De Niro gives his best performance in years in this warmhearted Kirk (Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee) Jones remake of Giuseppe Tornatore’s Stanno Tutti Bene. Following in the footstseps of Marcello Mastroianni, De Niro plays a retired widower who embarks on an impromptu road trip to reconnect with each of his grown children only to discover that their lives are far from picture perfect. An extraordinary ensemble cast includes Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell, but it is the heartfelt sincerity of De Niro’s weary, understated performance that dominates.

EXPANSIVE GROUNDS This documentary takes an appropriately sombre look from a German filmmaker’s perspective on the collective guilt at the horror of the holocaust. Berlin’s memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe has seen thousands of visitors since its opening in 2004, and Gerburg speaks with many of them on their experiences after contemplating the memorial.

EYES WIDE OPEN (Einaym Pkuhot) Haim Tabakman’s intense, mature first feature explores the notion that religion can never quite legislate for the workings of the human heart. Aaron is a respectable kosher butcher in an ultraorthodox area of Jerusalem. He is married with four sons. One rainy day he offers sanctuary to Ezri, a strikingly handsome twenty-two year old student. He takes a shine to the younger man, offering him the hand of friendship and taking him under his wing. Aaron soon understands that what he feels is love. Torn apart by guilt and the unbearable pressure to conform, he must choose between faith and desire.

THE FIRST MOVIE Northern Irish cineaste Mark Cousins is a passionate advocate of the power of film to transform our understanding of the world. In The First Movie he visits a small village in the Kurdish North of Iraq armed with a projector, a selection of great movies and three small cameras to allow the children there to express their inner imaginations. The result is a film about war and its human casualties but also an uplifting account of how innocence survives and beauty endures. FROZEN We’ve UK-launched Hatchet, Spiral and Grace for our good friend director/producer Adam Green. He’s returned the favour with those wonderful ‘Road to FrightFest’ shorts we highlight every August. Last year he filmed an intro for Grace’s Glasgow debut from the Frozen set. So we are delighted to host the European premiere of Green’s latest chiller so soon after its Sundance debut. A typical day on the ski slopes turns into a nightmare for three snowboarders stranded on the chairlift before their last run. Dangling high off the ground with no way down, how will they survive frostbite, hypothermia and other unexpected dangers?

GREGORY’S GIRL: 30th ANNIVERSARY SCHOOL REUNION BAFTA-winning Gregory’s Girl is probably the most beloved Scottish film ever made. Writer-director Bill Forsyth beautifully portrays the awkwardness and cock-eyed optimism of adolescence in a film that captures school life like no other. John Gordon Sinclair is the gangly teenager besotted with the new star player in the school football team (the gorgeous Dorothy) but fate has other plans in store for his romantic longings. A pregnant Audrey returns home to France and a less than warm welcome from her mother Martine. When Audrey discovers the diary of her grandmother Louise it provides a valuable insight into her unbearable existence as a 1950s housewife, why she abandoned her husband and children and the haunting effect on Martine. Beautifully acted by a powerhouse of French performers this is a sensitive and touching tale of a family at war with itself.

HILDE Hildegard Knef (1925–2002) was many things – Broadway star, songstress, screen diva, international icon and bestselling author. In this compelling biography Heike Makatsch gives a knockout performance as Knef, who walked out of the rubble of post-war Berlin and embarked on a career so amazing it could only be true. Infamous for appearing in the first nude scene in German cinema (in Die Sünderin, 1951) and called ‘the best singer without a voice’ by Ella Fitzgerald, Knef’s adventures in Hollywood, on Broadway and back home in her beloved Germany is the stuff of showbiz legend. A classy support cast includes Monica Bleibtreu and Michael Gwisdek.

HIPSTERS (STILYAGI) ‘Stilyagi’ was a term conceived by Soviet citizens to negatively label their ‘comrades’ who had an interest and passion in western culture immediately following the end of WWII. The war opened up the previously isolated country to an idea of what living on the other side of the iron curtain was like. However, the insight gained from Jazz LPs, movies of the era, and clothing was not the most accurate and realistic. An accomplished director and cast managed to turn the subject into a funny and ultimately romantic film that may be one if the best Russian films of the last ten years. IN CONVERSATION WITH JAMES EARL JONES James Earl Jones is one of the legendary names from the American arts with a career in film, theatre and television that spans more than four decades. He is currently playing Big Daddy in the acclaimed London production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof but has kindly agreed to come to the Glasgow Film Festival to discuss a film career that began with Stanley Kubrick’s classic Dr Strangelove (1964). THE INVISIBLE FRAME + CYCLING THE FRAME In 1988 director Cynthia Beatt invited Tilda Swinton and sound artist Simon Fisher Turner to join her on a filmic adventure, cycling along the Berlin Wall. They wanted to document the places the Wall had cut through, but also tried to capture West Berlin’s introspection as well as glimpses of East Berlin on the other side of the Wall. In the summer of 2009 they returned to re-trace the now ‘invisible frame’ in a second film - this time meandering between its two sides, looking for what has changed.

ISLAND OF DREAMS (YUME NO SHIMA) Tsuta Tetsuichiro was just 23 when he made this eyecatching debut feature, a loving throwback to the Nikkatsu film noir action movies of the early 1960s. Shot in black and white cinemascope, it focuses on Alan, a young man of Indian descent who works on the notorious artificial island/rubbish dump in Tokyo Bay known as Dream Island. Appalled by Japan’s casual disregard for the environment, he turns eco-terrorist targetting factories in Tokyo with his home made bombs. Detective Terayama races against the clock to prevent a major incident in a suspenseful retro thriller with a strong social conscience.

KAKERA Director Momoko Ando has been earning comparisons with Sofia Coppola for her haunting debut feature. Loosely based on the manga title Love Vibes, Kakera follows dreamy college student Haru. Coasting along in a dull relationship with her loutish boyfriend, she meets Riko, a woman who works as a prothetist. There is an immediate spark between the two women that Riko is keen to explore further. LEBANON (LEVANONE) Samuel Maoz’s extraordinary autobiographical debut feature Lebanon won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. THE LIST SURPRISE FILM To paraphrase Forrest Gump, “The Surprise Film is like a box of chocolates-you never know what you’re gonna get.” Last year we even surprised ourselves by showing O’Horten which proved to be one of the year’s loveliest foreign-language films. Previous surprises include Inland Empire and Son Of Rambow. Maybe it really is time for a great big Hollywood blockbuster? On the other hand there are so many fine films from the Soviet silent era that deserve to be much better known. Hazelnut heaven or caramel caress? You will only find out on the night.

THE LITTLE ONE (LA PIVELLINA) Documentary duo Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel make an auspicious move into narrative filmmaking with this low-budget charmer set among an extended family of Rome-based circus folk. Patti is wandering the streets of suburban Rome in search of her runaway dog Hercules when she spots a two-year old girl sitting on a swing. The child appears to have been abandoned and so Patti decides to take her home. The little girl is adorable and is soon befriended by teenager Tairo and the whole circus. They all know they should contact the police but cannot contemplate letting her go in a tale performed with amazing grace by a non-professional cast.

A LIZARD IN A WOMAN’S SKIN Where do dark dreams end and repulsive reality begin? Find out in the re-mastered, restored and never-before-seen fully uncut version of Italian gore-meister Lucio Fulci’s hippy, trippy 1971 giallo classic. Did rich socialite Carol Hammond (gialli goddess Florinda Bolkan) kill her nymphomaniac neighbour during a depraved orgy of LSD-induced sadistic sex? Or is her philandering husband framing her? Swinging London decadence, scandalous blackmail, neurotic visions and gory throat slashing all wrapped up in one of Ennio Morricone’s finest scores. Quirky touches of Fulci fantasy horror make this stylish psycho thriller a quintessential masterpiece of the giallo genre.

LOURDES Lourdes is a magnet for Christian pilgrims in search of a miracle. It has the second largest number of hotels in France after Paris. Jessica Hausner’s feature follows the longings and yearnings of one particular pilgrim. Christine is confined to a wheelchair and desperate for company and comfort. She adopts an attitude of piety so that she is made welcome on church trips. Befriending believers and sceptics alike, Christine is revealed as an incredibly poignant figure whose pilgrimage unfolds in sardonic encounters, awkward conversations and a touching central performance from Sylvie Testud.

LOVE AND RAGE (VANVITTIG FORELSKET) Cyron Bjorn Melville’s intense, utterly believable central performance won him the Best Actor prize at Montreal and is the lynchpin of this tautly handled psychological thriller. Melville’s Daniel is a gifted, highly strung pianist in Copenhagen, ambitious to win a place at Julliard. Suffering from stage fright and struggling to come to terms with his father’s suicide, his life gets back on track when he finds a professional mentor and a loving girlfriend in Sofie. Comic books have taken on a resurgence over the past few years, perhaps in no small part due to the talent of the Coatbridge born phenomenon, Mark Millar. The writer of the American industry’s biggest selling books in a decade, his career started by dropping out of university for stints at 2000AD, Warner Brothers and most recently Marvel Entertainment where he has been in charge of X-Men, Spider-Man and all their best known characters. His own creations too have been successful movie spin-offs including Wanted (with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie) and the forthcoming Nicolas Cage feature Kick-Ass. Next up is Wanted 2, American Jesus and War Heroes for Sony Pictures. Mark will take questions from both fans and aspiring writers alike, and talk about writing, producing and his forthcoming directorial debut. Despite many offers to relocate, he will be travelling to this event from his home in Glasgow.

ROOM AND A HALF A labour of love for director Andrey Khrzhanovsky, Room And A Half combines drama, documentary footage, archive material and animation to create a richly imaginative, semi-fictionalised biography of Nobel prize-winning Russian poet Josef Brodsky. Considered one of the greatest poets of the past century, Brodsky was exiled to America in 1972 and never returned. The film imagines a fictional homeward journey in which Brodsky reflects on his life from a happy childhood to a troubled exile. Inspired by Brodsky’s autobiographical essays this Festival favourite is witty, charming and brimming with pathos.

SAVAGE Drawing comparisons to Shane Meadows’ masterful Dead Man’s Shoes, this is a classic revenge thriller, set in Dublin. Healy plays photographer Paul Graynor, the victim of a horrific assault that he struggles to overcome, until choosing a path of vengeance. Most of the film is shot at night, a dark but intriguing portrayal of a European city asleep but in a nightmare for the troubled lead. Savage is a very apt title for a very uncomfortable and chilling conclusion.

SHE, A CHINESE (ZHONGGUO GUNIANG) The latest feature from director Xiaolu Guo (How Is Your Fish Today?), follows a sullen, stubborn Chinese girl on a journey from her small village to London. Li Mei endures a miserable life in rural China. The first stage on her journey is a bus to Chongqing where she finds work in a succession of dead end jobs and meets a hitman. The calendar in his room has a picture of Big Ben which becomes her inspiration for the dream of a fresh start in a faraway land that doesn’t always live up to her expectations. A lowbudget drama delicately capturing the fragments of a broken life.

SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILM CASE STUDY: THE INNER SHAPE BY JOHANNA WAGNER The Inner Shape was Johanna Wagner’s graduation film from the MA Directing course at Edinburgh Skillset Screen and Media Screen Academy. The film went on to win the Best Short Film award at BAFTA Scotland New Talent Awards in 2008. In conversation with Head of Film & TV at Edinburgh College of Art, Emma Davie, Johanna describes the process of making the film from idea to distribution and the support that she received from the Screen Academy along the way.

SPACE & LIGHT REVISITED St Peter’s Seminary at Cardross is Scotland’s neglected modernist masterpiece, a triumphant creation of ‘sacred space’ in 1966, but closed and abandoned only 14 years later. In 1972 filmmaker Murray Grigor celebrated the building in a near-wordless 20-minute film, with music by Frank Spedding. In February 2009 he returned to the derelict, graffiti-ridden site to make an exact shot-for-shot remake. We present the new film projected alongside the restored original in a remarkable time-spanning cinema diptych, with a new recording of the score by students of RSAMD.

THE STORY ROOM: DISCOVERING CHARACTER Led by screenwriter, producer and commissioner Paul Welsh, The Story Room is a process-based workshop for story and script development in film. The Story Room has now worked with over 200 filmmakers with support from partners including EM Media, Film Four / Cinema Extreme, North West Vision, Screen South, DigiCult and LFF’s Think Shoot Distribute. For GSFF, Paul will present a half-day workshop on character, combining discussion, short screenings and practical exercises. TERRIBLY HAPPY (FRYGTELIG LYKKELIG) Filled with clever twists and caustic humour, Terribly Happy is a cracking thriller that has been earning comparisons with the best of the Coen brothers. Cop Jakob Cedergren is emerging from the other side of a mental breakdown when he is posted to the small border town of Skarrild. The locals hardly welcome him or any concepts of traditional justice. Monaghan’s Diane is a harddrinking, independent truck driver who lives life according to her own set of rules. When her ex-husband reveals that he is terminally ill, she must finally assume responsibility for the son she abandoned years earlier. You may guess the outcome but what makes it so fresh and moving is the strength of the performances with Jimmy Bennett capturing the resentment and wariness of the boy and Monaghan refusing to sugar-coat her portrait of a selfish woman forced to re-think her priorities.

UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US This is a biopic of black metal music from Norway, directed by two Americans who were outsiders to the scene before becoming involved in arson, suicide and murder. We did say it was black. As the genre begins to garner more attention from other musicians, this documentary attempts to shed light on an admittedly dark subject. One lead singer of a metal group, Per Yngve Ohlin blew his brains out, leaving a suicide note that said ‘Sorry for the mess.’ Thankfully, there are other musicians featured with craniums intact.

VACATION (KYUKA) Capital punishment remains a highly contentious issue in Japanese society. Without recourse to tear-jerking melodrama, Hajime Kadoi creates a compassionate, moving drama around the issues of law and order. Hirai is a middle-aged prison guard worn down by the daily grind of his job. Kaneda is a model inmate on death row. When a date is set for Kaneda’s execution, Hirai is asked to assist the prisoner in his final moments. The reward is a week’s vacation in time for his honeymoon. The cost is accompanying Kaneda through his final meal, his last hours and physically supporting him as the execution takes place.

WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE: A FILM ABOUT THE DOORS Whilst the term ‘iconic’ is overused, few would argue that it can appropriately attached to the 1960s rock group The Doors. The Oliver Stone biopic delivered a generation of new fans to the band, and this documentary will provide factual information on a ground breaking (and occasionally law breaking) group. The film not only features interviews with all four band members, but also footage filmed by Jim Morrison himself. The film is narrated by Johnny Depp, and attempts to uncover the truth behind a great deal of myth, not least that Morrison faked his own death.

WHIP IT Drew Barrymore makes a confident move into the director’s chair with this rollicking sports comedy set in the bruising world of competitive roller-skating. Ellen (Juno) Page is the tough Texas tomboy encouraged to enter beauty pageants by her doting mom Marcia Gay Harden. A clandestine trip to a roller derby night in Austin introduces her to a world of kneepads and fishnets and derby girls called Iron Maven and Bloody Holly. The girl has found her true home and never looks back as she starts leading a thrilling double-life. Great fun especially when you realise that all the famous names did their own stunts.

WHISKY AND VODKA (WHISKY MIT VODKA) Renowned actor Otto has two loves - drinking and film. Fitting for the title, there are elements of fun and melancholy in this comedy drama. Even when blind drunk he still has more vision in filmmaking than the amateur directing his latest movie. Otto makes a mess of things on the film, inevitably being replaced by an understudy who is a fan of the older actor. With witty dialogue, and a complicated interplay between the star, his director and love interest, Whisky and Vodka has a great spirit that shines on the screen.

WHITE STRIPES UNDER GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS A ‘brother and sister’s’ journey across the great white north, as we are invited to join the White Stripes on their 2007 Canadian tour. The tour, like this portrayal, is epic, featuring a stop in every province and territory and an intimate look at the relationships between Jack, Meg... and their many fans. Feedback-infused blues are shot in the band’s trademark colours of black, red and white. Fans are treated to many free shows, including playing a city bus in Winnipeg, and a flour mill – an uplifting or ‘self raising’ appearance. Sorry – see the film.

WILLIAM MCLAREN AN ARTIST OUT OF TIME William McLaren was a prolific Scottish painter, illustrator and decorative artist who died in 1987 and has never received the recognition he deserves. This fascinating pioneering documentary has traced hundreds of his works and gathered the testimony of those who knew him. A graduate of the Edinburgh College Of Art, McLaren was a regular illustrator for the Radio Times and created a series of paintings for the staircase of Hopetoun House and many commissions for public buildings where he developed his trompe l’oeil style. Screening with the award-winning documentary And So Goodbye which led the filmmakers to their interest in McLaren.

A musician himself, Xavier de Lauzanne took on the arduous task of uniting Israeli and Palestinian musicians. The political divides between the musicians are not instantly forgotten, but ultimately overcome in the desire to share music and experiences. This record of a musical tour with a difference also documents those involved as they unite as brothers and sisters.

WOMEN WITHOUT MEN (ZANAN-E BEDUN-E MARDAN) Internationally renowned for her photography and video installations, Shirin Neshat’s feature debut won the Silver Lion at Venice and is a powerful adaptation of the controversial Shahrnush Parsipur novella set in Tehran on the eve of the CIA-backed coup that restored the Shah to power in 1953. The film deftly interweaves the stories of several women striving to escape the clutches of their society and achieve independence. The poignant characters include Munis who is at the mercy of her brother, army wife Fakhri and prostitute Zarin. A gorgeous, involving, multi-layered drama.

YATTERMAN (YATTAMAN) Director Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi The Killer) underscores his cult reputation with this frantic big screen adaptation of the hit 1970s television anime. Marbled with explosive action sequences, raunchy innuendo and goofy humour, the film is a breathless spectacle with echoes of Indiana Jones and Barbarella. Aided by their giant canine robot, teenager Gan Takada and girlfriend Ai Fukuda are locked in eternal battle with the evil Lady Doronjo who seems to buy her clothes from the same fetish shop as Halle Berry’s Catwoman. Their goal is possession of an all-powerful Skull Stone that could obliterate the planet. A wild, fun-filled guilty pleasure.

ZERO FOCUS (ZERO NO shôten) Seicho Matsumoto is renowned as one of the finest post-War Japanese thriller writers. Zero Focus was originally published in serial form in the late 1950s and became one of his most popular titles. ZOMBIE ZOMBIE PERFORM THE MUSIC OF JOHN CARPENTER Glasgow Music and Film Festival have specially commissioned Zombie Zombie (Paris) to perform a tribute to the music of John Carpenter alongside some of their own compositions. Carpenter and Zombie Zombie alike, use sound and rhythm to explore the feeling of fear growing deep from within, like in a horror movie, when your car won’t start, and someone is trying to kill you. Zombie Zombie are led by Professor Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman (from Herman Dune). A full a/v show will accompany. £
