During 2017 and 2018 EDN is engaging with the documentary community across Europe on Media and Society – European Documentary in a Changing Media Landscape, a study assessing the state of the documentary industry leading to the formulation of policies to ensure the ongoing health of the sector. At GFF EDN, Creative Europe and GFF will gather documentary professionals from across the industry to discuss the issues facing the sector and to contribute to EDN’s research. The session will be attended by representatives from Creative Scotland, SDI, BBC Scotland, exhibitors, distributors and producers and we have places available for GFF Industry Focus attendees. 10.45 - 12.00 Alternative Careers in Film CCA Theatre Are you interested in a career in film beyond traditional avenues such as direction or production? Ever wondered how to get started in a career in festival programming, distribution, or VFX? Primarily aimed at students and those at the early stages of their careers, this panel will look at the ways in which young professionals can gain entry into areas of the film industry not always discussed. Including EIFF Shorts Programmer Lydia Beilby, Curzon Home Cinemaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Heather McIntosh, VFX producer Will Adams of Once Were Farmers, and GFF Marketing Manager and freelance film journalist Paul Gallagher, our guests will offer their expertise and advice on how to make your mark in these alternative areas of the film industry that are often overlooked. The event will be hosted by Dr. Inge Sorensen from the University of Glasgow.

13.30 - 14.45 WFTV: Time's Up - Putting an end to bullying and harassment in film and television CCA Theatre In the light of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the ever-widening pool of revelations about bullying and sexual harassment in the industry, Kate Kinninmont, CEO of Women in Film and Television (UK) chairs a panel to explore the problem and discuss the remedies, in particular the new guidelines drawn up by major players across the industry, including BFI, BAFTA, Equity, Directors UK and WFTV. Panellists include Lisa Campbell, Director of the Edinburgh International TV Festival, Cinematographer Nicola Daley and Casting Director Simone Pereira Hind. Discussion will be open to the audience, but questions - or experiences - may be submitted anonymously in advance by email to metoo@wftv.org.uk. 15.15 - 16.30 New Finance CCA Theatre The landscape for film financing has changed rapidly in recent years. Branded content, crowd funding (and more recently, crew funding) as well as the emergence of powerful digital platforms have all provided storytellers with tantalising new funding possibilities. However, unlocking these opportunities is not always straightforward and questions persist about their effectiveness for independent features and if they are a replacement for more traditional mechanisms, including public funding. Join our expert panellists, Ben Roberts, Director of BFI Film Fund, Maria Tanjala, Founder of Big Couch, and Digital Director and Consultant Jen Topping as we journey to the cutting edge of new finance, providing practical advice for storytellers as we consider what these developments augur for the future of the industry. The event is hosted by Alex Stolz.

17.00 - 18.00 Case Studies: Kissing Candice - From Script to Screen CCA Theatre We welcome Writer/Director Aoife McArdle as she talks about making her first feature Kissing Candice, which screens in the GFF programme as part of the Ireland: The Near Shore strand. Aoife will discuss the process of writing and developing the film, securing funding, and finally going through the production of Kissing Candice, as well as festival strategies and marketing. Join us for a candid look at the ins and outs of the filmmaking process in Ireland. The event is hosted by producer Lila Rawlings. The Festival screenings of Kissing Candice take place on 1 & 2 March.

10.30 - 11.45 Original Visions: Finding Your Voice in Film CCA Theatre This session will explore how emerging filmmakers can develop an original voice for cinema. Hosted by award-winning filmmaker, academic and director of the UWS Creative Media Academy, Professor Nick Higgins, a panel of filmmakers and academic practitioners will discuss and present approaches to nurturing original stories in original ways to create the filmmakers of tomorrow. Each panellist will show examples from either their own work or productions they have been involved in that demonstrate the development of distinctive voices in the fields of fiction, documentary and experimental cinema. Speakers include Paul Welsh (producer and development executive of the Scottish Film Talent Network), Noe Mendelle/Flore Cosquer (Scottish Documentary Institute) and Sam Firth (filmmaker and MA Filmmaking lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland).

12.00 - 13.00 Working with the Baltics CCA Cinema As we celebrate the Baltic centenaries in the GFF programme with the Pure Baltic strand, the Industry Focus are joined by funders and producers from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to discuss the co-production and funding opportunities available in the region. As filmmaking is on the rise in the Baltics, join us to hear about how their systems operate- could your film be the next UK - Baltic co-production?

13.00 - 14.15 Case Studies: Journey of a First Genre Feature CCA Theatre Join Olivier Kaempfer, Production Executive at Film London, as he discusses the development journeys of two genre films by first time feature filmmakers. What are the biggest pitfalls and barriers on the road to getting your first film made? What are the best tips to getting your film financed? Olivier is joined by the team behind the thriller Zero, which has recently been made through Film London’s Microwave feature filmmaking scheme, as well as the team developing their Scottish horror, Out There, through the European Genre Forum.

14.00 - 16.00 GFF Industry Workshop: Paul Fraser - Screenwriting CCA Cinema Do you know your story? How do you clearly express your idea? How do you identify problems in your story? How do you resolve issues? This workshop explores project ideas, voices, and structures. It's an inclusive / practical session that gives a practitioner’s perspective on developing stories - from how we first express an idea to how we begin to shape the idea into a screenplay, as well as exploring key components to giving voice and drama to characters. Paul is a screenwriter and director represented by Casarotto. In collaboration with Shane Meadows he wrote 24/7, A Room for Romeo Brass, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands, Somers Town and Dead Man’s Shoes. The two continue to develop a number of projects together.

14.45 - 16.00 Film Disruptors Podcast: Distribution 2.0 CCA Theatre With audiences increasingly overwhelmed by a vast proliferation of content, from short form to box sets, the challenge to capture attention and engagement for anything but the biggest blockbusters is ever increasing. Yet with these changes also come the opportunity to target consumers with much higher accuracy and to reach them directly, potentially at much lower cost. What do these trends mean for independent film and how should storytellers approach distribution in 2018? Find answers here with the audience behaviour and digital technology experts who have developed the tools, strategies and techniques to help cut through the noise and help independent film find its audience. The event guests will be Ben Johnson, CEO of Gruvi, Ian Cartwright, Director of Ourscreen, and Anna Higgs, former Film4 and Ink Factory Executive. This session is brought to you in partnership with Film Disruptors, the podcast on the new entrepreneurs, trailblazers and troublemakers rewriting the rules of storytelling. Available on iTunes and www.alexstolz.com This event will be recorded live, latecomers will not be admitted. 16.30 - 18.00 Market Place Live - Glasgow CCA Theatre Market Place Live (MPL) is Film London's innovative 'live' panel experience developed in partnership with Film Export UK and Glasgow Film Office. MPL is designed to showcase the Film Value Chain through the use of a hypothetical film project which is developed, produced, sold and distributed all within 90 minutes. Market Place Live goes above and beyond the regular panel format: Panellists are confronted with a hypothetical film project and have to react 'live’; Each member of the panel takes on a 'role' akin to their real life professional position. A moderator controls the flow of the event by guiding the panel as well as revealing (and withholding) information in order to illustrate the issues involved in getting a film to market and finding an audience. As the story unfolds the panel will have no prior warning of the scenarios which will be presented to them. Women in Film & TV (UK) is the leading membership organisation for women working in creative media in the UK and part of an international network of over 13,000 women. Members of our organisation come from a broad range of professions spanning the entire creative-media industry. WFTV host a variety of events throughout the year, present a prestigious awards ceremony every December and run a mid-career mentoring programme for women. WFTV also host networking evenings, collaborate with industry bodies on research projects and lobby for women’s interests. The Scottish Creative Media Network is a new collaboration between Scotland’s Universities and Colleges that deliver courses and degree qualifications in film, broadcast and digital media. The network offers a learning and skills infrastructure that aims to ensure there is a continuing talent pipeline into Scotland’s screen, broadcast and digital industry. Working closely with the new Screen Unit and supported by the Scottish Funding Council the network includes: Edinburgh Napier University, University of the West of Scotland, University of Stirling, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of Edinburgh, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Fife College, Glasgow Clyde College, Perth College UHI, West College and City of Glasgow College. Come along and meet representatives from the network and hear more about the network’s plans for working with the creative industries in Scotland and beyond.

Hosted at Hospitalfield, it offers writer-directors a series of residential workshops comprising one-to-one script sessions, masterclasses and group discussions. For the second year, six projects by Scottish-based emerging screenwriting talent will be presented to Industry Professionals with the aim to take the production to the next level of development. Redressing the gender imbalance in Film & TV CCA Theatre We are at a seminal moment in Film and Television history; the industry has taken a more vocal stance against sexual harassment, inequality and intolerance than ever before. Join BAFTA Scotland’s panellists, who through their work, their voice or their activism have furthered the conversation on gender equality. They will debate the wider issues along with your questions and examine practical solutions that could help improve access, career development and equal on screen representation in the Film and TV industries. The discussion will be led by Director Karen Kelly, who will be joined by guests Sarah Asante, Comedy Commissioner at the BBC, Writer/Director Rachel Tunnard, and Actor Deirdre Mullins. Audience members will be asked to submit a question on arrival. If you cannot make it to the session you can also take part in the debate by using the hashtag #whynow 15.45 - 17.00 Industry Spotlight: Kerry Barden CCA Theatre Casting Director Kerry Barden has cast over 200 films, including, most notably Spotlight, Still Alice, Dallas Buyers Club, The Help, Boys Don’t Cry, American Psycho, the Pitch Perfect franchise, House of Mirth and four films for director John Waters. Kerry joins GFF Industry Focus to talk about his immense career and experiences casting for Oscar-winning Hollywood films as well as American Indies, including Winter’s Bone which gave Jennifer Lawrence her big break in the industry. The event is hosted by Wendy Mitchell, contributing editor of Screen International. 17.45 - 19.00 Industry Spotlight: Andrew Macdonald Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Stevenson Hall National Film and Television School (NFTS) Director, Jon Wardle hosts a session with BAFTA-winning Producer, CEO of DNA Films and NFTS board member, Andrew Macdonald (Trainspotting, Ex Machina, 28 Days Later). Jon will discuss a number of key topics with Andrew including DNA’s contribution to British and particularly Scottish cinema as well as the state of the industry and the future of independent film. Andrew and Jon will also discuss the opportunities that NFTS Scotland will provide for local talent and its role in supplying a pipeline of career ready graduates for the expected growth in Scottish productions. SATURDAY 3 MARCH GFF Industry Workshop: The Director Actor Relationship with Kenny Glenaan Presented by Directors UK and GFF 10.00 – 17.00, Film City Glasgow This workshop is designed for directors from any discipline interested in working with actors for the camera. It will break down into three sections: Auditions, Rehearsals and Performance, and will be part theory and part practical work with actors in each area. Supported in kind by City of Glasgow College and Film City. Directors UK is the professional association for screen directors in the UK, working to ensure that directors, and their work, are recognised at every level. With almost 6,500 members and growing, we represent directors’ creative, economic and contractual interests. Providing services and benefits from collecting and distributing rights payments, to campaigning for inclusivity, equality and directors’ rights within the workplace, to legal advice and support, and commercial negotiations.
