Wednesday 1 – Thursday 16 July Director Michael Mann Cast Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard USA 2009, 2h23m

Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider) is back on top form, directing Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger – the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI, and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger (Depp) and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone – from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One, and sent in Melvin Purvis (Bale), the dashing ‘Clark Gable of the FBI’. As stylish and thrilling a film as you would expect from Mann – the bank robbery scenes in particular are superbly done – with great performances from its leads and supporting cast. Filmhouse Edinburgh www.publicenemies.net The screening on Wednesday 15 July (5.10) will be introduced by Dr David Archibald, journalist and lecturer at The University of Glasgow.

s. Darko is the captivating tale based in the surreal world first seen through the eyes of Donnie Darko. Set seven years after the cult classic, we follow Donnie’s sister Samantha as she struggles with the trials and tribulations of teenage life. s. Darko enters a surreal world of time travel set against the imminent end of the universe, whilst our protagonists deal with the equally complicated realities of life, love, friendships and family relationships.

Bill Douglas’ little-seen, visionary “poor man’s epic”. In the 1830s a group of six Dorset farm workers formed a union in an attempt to win a fair wage for a fair day’s work. They called a strike and were arrested and sentenced to be transported to Australia for seven years. They became known as the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The film is one of Peter Bradshaw’s (The Guardian) top 10 picks for EIFF 2009. This screening will be introduced by Professor Grahame Smith. Please join Grahame for discussion in the upstairs bar after the screening. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Friday 10 – Thursday 16 July Director Fernando Eimbcke Cast Diego Catano, Hector Herrera, Daniela Valentina Mexico 2008, 1h21m, subtitles

The second feature from Duck Season director Fernando Eimbcke is an expert exercise in quirky, minimalist wit that suggests a strong affinity with Aki Kaurismaki. Juan crashes the family car. His search for a replacement distributor harness is the start of a long, hot afternoon punctuated by quirky encounters with aging mechanic Don Heber and his dog, martial-arts fanatic David and young mother Lucia. Dry wit and a sharp eye mark this sleepy, well-observed insight into a life that is just as stalled as the car. GFF09 12A: Contains infrequent strong language and moderate nudity

But the risks are high: smuggling immigrants on the frozen Saint Lawrence. At first the ice is still thick, but as the deals go on and the river gets thinner, they discover that easy money comes at a cost. One of the most exciting thrillers I’ve seen this year... It took my breath away and then somewhere around the last hour, it put my heart in a vice and proceeded to twist that vice until the last frame Quentin Tarantino BUY TICKETS ONLINE WWW.GFT.ORG.UK

One Small Step To coincide with the 40th anniversary of the first Moon landing on 20 July 1969, GFT presents a short season of Moon related films. It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn’t feel like a giant. I felt very, very small Neil Armstrong

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY Sunday 12 (4.00) & Tuesday 14 July (8.00) Director Stanley Kubrick Cast Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood

USA 2009, 1h37m

USA 1968, 2h21m

A thoughtful character study wrapped in a hi-tech sci-fi flic, Moon stars Sam Rockwell as the sole operator of a lunar mining base, living with only a computer robot (voiced by Kevin Spacey) to keep him company. Three years living on the surface of the Moon, far from the touch of his wife and young daughter, has taken its toll—he’s starting to hallucinate, touching off a thrilling chain of events that will shake his sense of identity to the core.

Frequently named by many polls as one of the great films of all time, 2001: A Space Odyssey remains an unforgettable physical and intellectual experience.

Shirin is the heroine of a 12th-century Persian poem, a princess courted by two men. And Shirin is a film-withinthis-film which we hear but do not see; as dramatic dialogue, epic music and echoing sound-effects chart the princess’s fate, we see in a cinema, separately in a flowing montage of close-ups, around 100 women responding to the fiction we’re listening to. bfi

Kisses is the captivating story of two children on the run from their drab lives outside of Dublin. Dylan has had enough of his father’s abuse. After an altercation, he runs away to the city with his neighbour Kylie, a tough-but-sweet girl who clearly has a bit of a crush on Dylan. As the pair get closer to the city the blackand-white of their lives turn into beautiful colour. Writer and director Lance Daly’s fairytale is a story about youth, poverty, fear and Bob Dylan.

USA 2008, 1h32m

France 2008, 1h39m, subtitles

While editing the 1996 Rumble in the Jungle documentary, When We Were Kings, director Jeffrey Levy-Hinte became fascinated with the three-day concert that preceded the 1974 Ali-Foreman bout in Zaire. From a wealth of footage, he’s assembled one of the most energetic music docs in years, featuring not only great performances from the likes of James Brown and Miriam Makeba, but also Celia Cruz and the Fania All-Stars entertaining passengers on the long flight to Kinshasa; Spinners lead singer Philippé Wynne duking it out with the Greatest; and Sister Sledge, barely out of their teens, grooving backstage.

Known for her sensual and contemplative body of work, which includes Beau Travail and Vendredi Soir, Claire Denis here crafts a tender, subtle family drama about the close connection between a Parisian widower, his university student daughter, and the friends, neighbours and romantic interests that circle them. With a wordless interdependence and easy rhythm within the small family unit, the film explores a kind of rite of passage as father and daughter must face up to the fact it’s time for her to live her own life. Eloquent performances from a fine ensemble cast, including Denis regulars Alex Descas and Grégoire Colin, anchor this delicate celebration of love.

The film is a rollicking documentary... The sound quality is remarkable, the energy infectious and the music outstanding The Observer www.soulpowerfilm.co.uk The screening on Wednesday 29 July (6.15) will be introduced by Dr David Archibald, journalist and lecturer at The University of Glasgow.

COCO BEFORE CHANEL Coco avant Chanel

12A

Friday 31 July – Thursday 20 August Director Anne Fontaine Cast Audrey Tautou, Benoit Poelvoorde, Alessandro Nivola France 2009, 1h50m, subtitles

Born poor in 1883 in rural France, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel overcame her lack of breeding via a keen eye, forthright manner and revolutionary approach to women’s tailoring that, incredibly, transformed a gruff peasant girl into the embodiment of chic. The iconic innovator lived to be 87 but this film wisely concentrates on the stretch of time specified in the title, as Chanel struggles to get by, absorbs visual inspiration from her surroundings (the nuns’ habits, military buttons, a fisherman’s knit shirt, etc.) and unabashedly uses men to get closer to Paris. Bearing a striking resemblance to the real woman, Audrey Tautou communicates Chanel’s emancipated, fearless approach to life and her steely resolve while letting subtle layers of hurt, humiliation and grief show through her pride. The film is a lavishly beautiful and convincing portrait of the designer’s journey from her humble beginnings as a provincial seamstress to the halls of Parisian haute couture. Tautou’s performance is one of her finest to date, revealing her character’s headstrong personality through smart delivery and a permanent but attractive pout Variety The screening on Wednesday 12 August (6.00) will be introduced by Dr David Archibald, journalist and lecturer at The University of Glasgow. 12A: Contains moderate sex references

Mesrine (Vincent Cassel) returns home from the army and embarks upon a life of violent crime. Expertly handled by director Jean-François Richet, this is the first half of a double bill of epic proportions, executed with an explosive flair and a brutal realism that Hollywood can only dream of. Gérard Depardieu excels as grotesque mob boss Guido, but it’s the dangerous, unpredictable charisma that Cassel brings to the central role that mesmerises. EIFF 2009

Part two of the César-winning modern gangster classic. As Mesrine continues to evade and frustrate the law, he becomes increasingly burdened by his own bloated celebrity, and begins to question his thrilling but lonely existence. From Friday 28 August Director Pedro Almodovar Cast Cast Penélope Cruz, Jose Luis Gomez, Lluis Homar Spain 2009, 2h8m, subtitles

Pedro Almodóvar reunites with Penélope Cruz for a sensuous film-within-a-film that is a moviegoer’s delight. A lavish, noirish melodrama sparkling with Almodovar’s trademark humour, Broken Embraces is devilishly clever and shrewdly cast with a stable of Almodovar regulars. Penélope Cruz stars as an actress struggling to escape the suffocating constraints of the aging millionaire lover who has bankrolled her career. The film is awash with references to the noir genre, Italian neo-realism and even to Almodovar’s own quirky oeuvre. Stylistic nods to films including Nicholas Ray’s In a Lonely Place and Vincente Minnelli’s The Bad and the Beautiful form part of Almodovar’s valentine to cinema. Almodóvar has always managed to combine elegance and exuberance, and his latest movie is no exception: a richly enjoyable piece of work, slick and sleek, with a sensuous feel for the cinematic surfaces of things and, as ever, self-reflexively infatuated with the business of cinema itself.

Director’s Focus: Kubrick Stanley Kubrick is probably a unique case in the history of cinema. He is the heir to no one and, unlike his contemporaries Bergman, Antonioni or Godard, has no direct inheritor. Entirely selftaught, he was first, at the age of 17, a professional and brilliant photographer, working for Look for five years. He also earned his living by playing chess in Washington Square and played drums in a jazz band. These three activities are early demonstrations of his visual talent, rigorous mind and sense of rhythm.

DR STRANGELOVE PG

Always supported by the audience, he puzzled the critics by refusing to be pigeonholed and avoiding a recognisable signature. Always controversial, often attacked, he moved from genre to genre as if wanting to reach an unattainable perfection that no one could rival. The son of a doctor from the Bronx, he tried in his films to diagnose the human predicament without sentimentality, and to study civilisation and its discontents. In that sense he was, besides being a great showman, a philosophical director, weaving cautionary tales that were painstakingly documented before entering the world of imagination and fantasy. bfi Southbank

Dr Strangelove definitively established Kubrick as a key artist of his time. A nightmare comedy about nuclear holocaust, it exemplifies the director’s sense of contrasting sets (the Burpleston base, B-52 bomber and the War Room, wonderfully designed by Ken Adam). The bravura performance of Peter Sellers in three different roles matches Kubrick’s audacity and sombre expressionism.

A landmark in science fiction film, 2001 is still unique in capturing the feeling of being in outer space, due to its extraordinary realism. But equally impressive is the poetic fantasy, shrouded in mystery, from the Dawn of Man episode to the black monolith, from the Star Gate sequence to the 18th century room.

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

THE SHINING 18

Sunday 19 (3.45) & Tuesday 21 July (8.15) Director Stanley Kubrick Cast Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Michael Bates USA 1971, 2h16m

Quickly shot and set in a near future, this is probably the Kubrick film most in tune with the spirit of its time. The settings, costumes, art works and music suggest a nightmarish vision of a swinging London turned ultra-violent. Adapted from Anthony Burgess’ novel, it is a vindication of free will – an anarchistic and scathing attack on the state’s politics – and offers an extraordinary performance by Malcolm McDowell.

Sunday 26 (6.30) & Tuesday 28 July (6.00) Director Stanley Kubrick Cast Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd USA 1980, 2h23m

With gothic novelist Diane Johnson, Kubrick freely adapted Stephen King’s book into his personal vision. While keeping the horror film elements, he transformed it into a case study of claustrophobia, madness, Oedipal relationship and artistic block. The largerthan-life performance of Jack Nicholson and the huge studio-built Overlook Hotel as a luminous décor for a ghost story make it an unforgettable experience.

This supremely elegant version of Thackeray’s novel chronicles the progress of Barry Lyndon as he makes his way through the battlefields and boudoirs of 18th-century Europe. THE 400 BLOWS Les Quatre cents coups PG Wednesday 1 – Friday 3 July

La Nouvelle Vague The greatest criminal enterprise in cinema history… The New Wave was a crime: that was its beauty. It was an outrage against law, order and aesthetic decency. Nigel Andrews, Financial Times. The French New Wave or La nouvelle vague was a term coined by critics to refer to work by innovative filmmakers in France whose heyday was between 1958 and 1964. These new directors, who included François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, responded to their experiences of France’s upheaval following the devastation of WWII by creating works of art in deliberate reaction to the old-fashioned, ‘quality’ cinéma de papa (‘Dad’s cinema’). With some of the country’s greatest directors such as Jean Renoir (who represented the old guard of French auteur cinema) in a state of exile due to WWII, there emerged the possibility of a ‘new wave’ of directors to make their presence provocatively known on the French film scene. This season celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the Nouvelle Vague. The event is designed to provide an opportunity to see the key films of the movement alongside those that inspired, or were inspired by, them.

Alain Resnais’ enigmatic first feature film was a watershed in contemporary cinema that was praised by his contemporaries as the first truly modern film: a film free of cinematic references. It centres round a nameless French actress the narrator who is having an affair with a Japanese man during her visit to Hiroshima to appear in a film about peace. Through the use of a loose narrative structure, “flashbacks”, and the woman’s candid confessions, the film reveals itself as a meditation on memory and oblivion, love and catastrophe. It remains one of the most influential films in the history of the medium particularly because of the way in which it deliberately eschewed the conventions of linear construction.

Rivette’s disquieting film, suffused with sexual and political tension, is as much about its setting - a long-vanished Paris full of fleabag hotels and corduroy-clad intellectuals - as about its gripping story. 12A: Contains frequent suicide references

Directors Jean Rouch, Edgar Morin

Director Jean-Luc Godard Cast Jean-Paul Belmondo, Anna Karina, Dirk Sanders, Samuel Fuller

France 1961, 1h25m, subtitles

Chronicle of a Summer is a documentary film made during the summer of 1960 by sociologist Edgar Morin and anthropologist and filmmaker Jean Rouch. The film begins with a discussion between Rouch and Morin on whether or not it is possible to act sincerely in front of a camera. A cast of real life individuals are then introduced and are led by the filmmakers to discuss topics on the themes of French society and happiness in the working class. Filmed in Paris and Saint-Tropez, the film is a structurally innovative example of cinéma vérité.

France/Italy 1965, 1h49m, subtitles

In this ostensible follow up to Breathless, Belmondo plays the bored husband who runs away from Paris to the South of France with an unpredictable but beguiling young babysitter (Anna Karina) after a corpse is found in her flat. Following an idyllic time at the seaside they hit the road once more and get by on theft, but no matter how far they flee, they cannot escape their fate.

Tribute to Joseph Losey To mark the centenary of the birth of the American theatre and film director Joseph Losey ( January 14, 1909 – June 22, 1984), we are screening his three collaborations with English dramatist and screenwriter Harold Pinter, plus Marek Losey ( Joseph Losey’s grandson’s) The Hide. Each of the films explores class and the British character: The Servant (1963), Accident (1967) and The Go-Between (1970). All three were highly acclaimed and were nominated for prestigious awards. The Go-Between won the Golden Palm Award at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival. Pinter also wrote an adaptation of Proust for Losey, but the finances were never found to make the film.

THE SERVANT

15

Sunday 26 (2.45) & Monday 27 July (8.30) Director Joseph Losey Cast Dirk Bogarde, James Fox, Wendy Craig, Sarah Miles UK 1963, 1h45m

John Dankworth wrote the score - and the song ‘All Gone’, performed by his wife Cleo Laine - for Losey’s astute study of class conflict. Taken on as manservant at the upmarket London home of foppish aristocrat Tony (Fox), Barrett (Bogarde) soon exercises a cunning that will undermine his master’s assumptions about who’s the boss. The precision of Harold Pinter’s adaptation of Robin Maugham’s novel is matched by Losey’s eloquent direction.

Saturday 15 (3.45) & Sunday 16 August (5.15) Director Marek Losey Cast Alex MacQueen, Phil Campbell UK 2008, 1h22m

On the Suffolk mudflats creaks an isolated bird-hide. Inside is Roy Tunt, a birder who, once he sights the elusive plover, will have twitched the entire British List. From this simple beginning develops a crisp thriller, as Roy’s solitude is shattered by the arrival of a bedraggled stranger. With superlative performances from Alex MacQueen and Phil Campbell, director Marek Losey (grandson of Joseph) ensures his minimal means have maximum impact.
