Friday 30 April – Thursday 6 May Director Götz Spielmann / Cast Johannes Krisch, Irina Potapenko, Andreas Lust, Ursula Strauss Germany, 2008, 2h1m, subtitles
One-to-watch Götz Spielmann’s multi award-winning film is a suspense-filled thriller, full of jarring angularities, perfectly composed scenes and dollops of steamy sex. Alex (Krisch) is a tightly wound ex-con working in a Viennese brothel. His only respite is his love for Ukrainian prostitute Tamara (Potapenko) who reluctantly plies her trade in the same brothel. Out in the sun-dappled countryside, lovers Susanne (Strauss) and inexperienced cop Robert (Lust) have just moved into their new home. Two couples in seemingly diametrical opposition are brought into one another’s spheres after a botched robbery sets Spielmann’s taut tale in motion… The pleasures here are threefold: an intelligently constructed screenplay; the gorgeous compositions and rural locations filmed by cinematographer Martin Gschlacht; and, above all, the performances of Krisch et al, who make their characters human and believable, and then demonstrate that insurmountable differences are not necessarily so. This much anticipated feature documentary from Academy Award® nominated director Leslie Iwerks is the heart-wrenching story of industry and government putting money before the health and security of its people and the environment.

Friday 30 April – Thursday 6 May Director Roman Polanski Cast Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan France/Germany/UK 2010, 2h8m
Winner of the Silver Bear at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, The Ghost is a sophisticated political thriller from master auteur Roman Polanski based on the novel by Robert Harris. Ewan McGregor is The Ghost, a ghostwriter who agrees to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang (a superb againsttype Pierce Brosnan) after his predecessor died in an unfortunate accident. But when The Ghost uncovers some dark secrets about Lang he finds his own life in jeopardy. Featuring an all star cast that also includes Kim Cattrall, Olivia Williams and Tom Wilkinson, The Ghost is an intelligent, topical and suspenseful film, proving Polanski has lost none of his touch.
GIVE ME YOUR HAND Donne-moi la main 15 Tuesday 4 - Thursday 6 May Director Pascal Alex-Vincent Cast Victor Carril, Alexandre Carril, Samir Harrag France 2008, 1h20m, subtitles
Two twin brothers, Antoine and Quentin, hitchhike across France to attend their estranged mother’s funeral. As they travel towards Barcelona, old grudges between the pair resurface. Antoine resents the friendships that his brother makes on their journey, while sensitive Quentin is frustrated by his brother’s possessive behaviour. Inspired by various road movies of the 70s, this is a lyrical and inspired debut by one of France’s most promising directors. Preceded by Pascal Alex-Vincent’s hilarious short film Hollywood by Accident (12 mins).
NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT PERSIAN CATS Kasi az gorbehaye irani khabar nadareh 12A Friday 7 – Monday 10 May Director Bahman Ghobadi Cast Negar Shaghaghi, Ashkan Koshanejad, Hamed Behdad Iran 2009, 1h47m, subtitles
Previewed at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival, this quirky and original exploration into the underground music scene of Iran’s capital, Tehran, won the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2009. The plot follows a teenage boy and girl, just released from prison, with dreams of starting a band and leaving Iran. Travelling to Tehran they find themselves in the thick of a subculture of rappers, indie rockers and metal heads. The focus on the hope and rebellion that music can inspire is given a political underpinning by director Ghobadi, and this brilliant film is utterly entertaining and thoroughly moving. The screening on Friday 7 May (5.45) will be introduced by Dr Christopher Gow whose book ‘From Iran to Hollywood and Some Places In-between’ is published by I.B. Tauris. 12A Contains moderate injury detail

Director Yorgos Lanthimos Cast Christos Stergioglou, Michelle Valley, Aggeliki Papoulia
Director Alejandro Amenábar Cast Rachel Weisz, Max Minghella, Oscar Isaac
Greece 2009, 1h36m, subtitles
In Roman Egypt, a slave falls in love with his master, the female astronomer, philosopher and atheist Hypatia.
A father creates a bizarre self-styled utopia within the confines of his walled home in a desperate bid to preserve the innocence of his son and two 20-something daughters. Forbidden to leave and completely isolated from any interaction with the outside world, in their alternative reality cats are man-eating predators and planes are flying toys. When their father invites a woman into their home to service his son’s sexual urges the domestic balance is irrevocably disturbed as she provokes a violent chain of events that destroys their superficially constructed world. An audacious, merciless satire of misguided ethics with a dark, twisted humour that some viewers may find disturbing, this is provocative, powerful filmmaking. Monday 10 – Wednesday 12 May Director Nicolas Winding Refn Cast Mads Mikkelsen, Gary Lewis, Jamie Sives Denmark/UK 2009, 1h32m
Shot in Scotland this is the story of One-Eye (Mikkelsen), a mute warrior of formidable strength, who has been held prisoner by the chieftain Barde for years. A spectacularly brutal and efficient killer, One-Eye is dispatched by Barde to fight for money and land in increasingly ferocious hand-to-hand conflicts. On one level, One-Eye’s mission to find his destiny is rendered with explicit and violent physicality, but director Winding Refn also employs the beauty and strangeness of the natural world to create an impression of the quietness and stillness of his inner self. ...a true original. AMERICAN: THE BILL HICKS STORY
15
Friday 14 – Thursday 27 May Directors Matt Harlock, Paul Thomas UK 2009, 1h50m
American is the tale of great American comedian Bill Hicks - his life, his comedy and his untimely passing. Directed by Matt Harlock and Paul Thomas, the film mixes animation and archived footage to bring Bill Hicks’ story to the big screen. Much more than a comedian, Bill Hicks was and still is an inspiration to millions. His timeless comedy tackled the contradictions of America and modern life head on, as he skewered organised religion, railed against the hypocrisies of his government and exposed the collusion of the mainstream media, earning him censorship in the USA, but continues to resonate with subsequent generations. www.americanthemovie.com

Friday 14 – Thursday 27 May Director Samuel Maoz / Cast Yoav Donat, Itay Tiran, Oshri Cohen Israel/France/Germany 2009, 1h33m, subtitles
Reminiscent of Wolfgang Petersen’s classic U-boat war film Das Boot, Lebanon confines the action almost entirely to a tank. Based on the director’s own experiences, Lebanon once again finds an Israeli director – after Ari Folman and Waltz With Bashir – analysing his country’s illfated 1982 invasion of Lebanon. Where Folman’s animated documentary tested the boundaries of memory and reality with dazzlingly surreal imagery, Maoz ratchets up the tension by remaining largely within the suffocating metal confines of his platoon’s armoured tank. Largely leaving the wider politics to one side, the director instead etches a human portrayal of soldiers and civilians alike. The horrors of modern urban warfare are made all the more visceral through the lens of a gun sight, as Maoz creates a haunting examination of young men caught out of their depth in a situation they do not understand. BAD LIEUTENANT - PORT OF CALL: NEW ORLEANS
18
Friday 21 May – Thursday 3 June Director Werner Herzog / Cast Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer USA 2009, 2h2m
Fearless legend Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Grizzly Man), who once played down being shot during an interview with Mark Kermode remarking ‘It is not a significant bullet’, teams up with a wonderfully unhinged Nicolas Cage for this excellent tale of a corrupt cop in a New Orleans rebuilding itself after Hurricane Katrina. Cage plays Terrence McDonagh, a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs – while playing fast and loose with the law and taking full advantage of a city deserted by its citizens. Director Herzog and Cage make a great partnership, both throwing caution to the wind and the result is a wild, daring and manically funny masterpiece. Before Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans blew us all away, Nicholas Cage gave an electrifying performance as a convict with a heart of gold and penchant for Elvis in Wild at Heart (see p21 for details). Friday 21 – Thursday 27 May Director Marco Bellocchio / Cast Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Filippo Timi, Corrado Invernizzi Italy/France 2009, 2h5m, subtitles
The idea of explaining Mussolini’s Italy as a wronged woman is nothing new in cinema (see La Strada), but the fascinating thing about Vincere is the way it moves freely among genres, evoking everything from a traditional biopic to a propaganda film to a Sirkian “women’s picture.” The subject is Ida Dalser (a superb Mezzogiorno), Mussolini’s unacknowledged first wife. Bellocchio (Fists in the Pocket) deliberately limits the politics to flashes of fervour (one of the most evocative scenes involves an impromptu rally in a movie theatre), but we know that this man will go on to become Il Duce, long after Ida has wed him and borne his son. But he remarries and goes so far as to have Ida committed to prevent the truth from being revealed. Full of bold colours and operatic musical interludes, the movie is powerful, robust filmmaking from one of Italian cinema’s reigning lions. On Wednesday 26 May (5.45) Dr. David Archibald, lecturer at Glasgow University, will introduce this screening as part of the Contemporary Cinema course. See p22 for details.

Agnès Varda – Film Season A true pioneer of the French New Wave, the feisty 82-year old Agnes Varda is still creating filmic sensation today. This short touring season from the bfi includes her compelling features Cleo from 5 to 7 (1963) and Vagabond (1985) – and documentaries The Gleaners and I (2000) and The Beaches of Agnes (2009) - films which place her firmly among the major post-war French filmmakers. Programme notes for this season are available for this season in the cinema and online at www.gft.org.uk/notes

CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 Cleo de 5 a 7 PG
Cast Jean-Claude Drouot, Marie-France Boyer
Sunday 23 May (5.30)
Cast Corinne Marchand, Antoine Bourseiller, Michel Legrand
France 1965, 1h25m, subtitles
Varda’s self-portrait is at once emotional, incisive and self-deprecating. Through a wonderful array of images and sounds, living tableaux, interviews and art installations, Varda takes the viewer from her childhood home in Brussels to her 80th birthday in Paris, via extracts from her films and views of her friends, her late husband Jacques Demy, her collaborators and her children.

Sunday 16 May (5.45)
The blissfully married François (French television star Drouot, acting with his own wife and children) starts an affair with Émilie (Boyer) with varied consequences. Under the guise of an apparently banal story of love and adultery, and idyllic surface prettiness, Varda’s third feature film trenchantly explores the myth of romance and the underside of the ‘perfect’ family in 1960s France, with its unthinking misogyny.

Varda’s second feature remains a highlight of the extraordinary outpouring of French movies in the early 60s. Following a pop singer around the streets and parks of Paris as she whiles away two hours awaiting the results of some medical tests, this subtle, innovative character study also succeeds brilliantly as a stylish, vivid documentarystyle portrait of a wondrously vibrant city.

THE GLEANERS AND I Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse U
Cast Sandrine Bonnaire, Macha Méril, Yolande Moreau
Sunday 6 June (1.30)
France 1985, 1h45m, subtitles
Varda’s ground-breaking and hugely successful documentary explores the idea of ‘gleaning’, from the ancient practice enshrined in paintings such as Jean-François Millet’s 1857 ‘Des Glaneuses’, to the victims of late capitalism who scavenge in supermarket bins both to survive and to denounce consumerist excess. Mixing documentary reportage and interviews with art and photography, Varda’s investigation ranges widely across France, offering a poignant yet heartlifting discourse on her relationship to others, her practice as a filmmaker and her own ageing.
France 2000, 1h22m, subtitles
Deservedly one of Varda’s best known films, Vagabond is amongst the most powerful portraits of a woman in modern cinema. Mosaic-like, the film reconstructs the last weeks of rebellious and nihilistic vagrant Mona (the young Bonnaire, in a careerdefining performance), inspired by a real case. Mona’s identity emerges from her impact on others, many played by non-professionals. Set in a bleak, wintry South of France, Vagabond embeds Mona’s fate in the region’s landscape and customs.

LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN U
Sunday 9 – Wednesday 12 May
Monday 17 – Wednesday 19 May
Director John Frankenheimer Cast Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Angela Lansbury
Director Max Ophüls Cast Joan Fontaine, Louis Jourdan, Mady Christians, Art Smith
USA 1962, 2h6m
USA 1948, 1h27m
Frank Sinatra excels as a Korean War veteran plagued by nightmares involving a fellow POW (an amazingly well cast Laurence Harvey) who - thanks partly to the ambitions of his wellconnected mother (Angela Lansbury) - has since become a national hero. Then he finds he’s not alone in having the recurring dream, and gradually unravels a web of murky intrigue and murderous extremism... A frighteningly relevant (and, indeed, prescient) account of psychological warfare, dynastic powermongering, media manipulation and political assassination, the film also - like Psycho - comprises a corrosive attack on the cult of mother-love, with Lansbury supremely effective as a ferociously Machiavellian Medusa. A highpoint of the strikingly adult, adventurous Hollywood cinema of the 60s.
This is one of cinema’s most achingly poignant romances. About to leave the city in order to avoid a duel, concert pianist Stefan Brand receives a letter from a woman he can no longer remember Ilse, who first nurtured a crush on him as a schoolgirl neighbour and whose later encounters with him were considerably more intimate. Joan Fontaine is magnificent throughout - within a cruel cycle of obsessive longing born of romantic fantasy (in which regard Louis Jourdan’s suave, slightly shallow beauty fits Brand perfectly).

Director Jerzy Skolimowski Cast Alan Bates, Susannah York, John Hurt
Director Mamoru Oshii Voices of Ryō Kase, Rinko Kikuchi, Shōsuke Tanihara
UK 1978, 1h26m
Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski’s film is a strange, disturbing, and elusive tale of a mental patient, Alan Bates, who, having once lived with a tribe of Aborigines, has learned the secret of “the shout,” which has the power to kill. Told in flashback during a cricket match that takes place on the grounds of a mental asylum, the film follows Bates’s relationship with experimental composer Hurt and his wife, York. Bates moves in with the couple, and gradually his disturbing presence takes its toll. Selected by Glasgow-based composer, Craig Armstrong. Craig originally studied composition and piano and is probably best known for award winning film scores and his arrangement work for Massive Attack. He is currently working in his own studio on a new album. He is a fan of both the film and Tony Banks’ soundtrack.
Japan 2008, 2h2m, subtitles
From the director of the acclaimed anime Ghost in the Shell, comes Mamoru Oshii’s latest masterpiece, set in an alternate universe where the world is at peace and realistic dogfights are staged to entertain an aggressive population. Piloted by teenagers known as ‘Kildren’ who seem to never age, a rookie commander discovers that they are products of a mysterious genetic experiment and sets out to discover the secrets behind their creation. RITHY PAHN – FILM SEASON 13-29 JUNE Rithy Panh migrated to France and in his early twenties studied filmmaking at the prestigious Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (Institute for Advanced Cinematographic Studies) in Paris. His textured fiction and documentary films explore the history and experiences of post-Khmer Rouge Cambodia and speak of a traumatic history. Panh himself experienced the mass evacuation of Phnom Penh in 1975, witnessing family members die from exhaustion and starvation in a Cambodian labour camp before fleeing to a refugee camp in Thailand. He returned to Cambodia in 1990 and established Bophana: Audio Visual Resource Centre in Phnom Penh, which aims to preserve and develop Cambodia’s film, photography and audio heritage. With the support of Culturesfrance and Alliance Francaise de Glasgow, GFT presents four of Pahn’s most incisive and poetic films. Full details of screenings can be found in the GFT June brochure.

Late Night Cult Classics GHOST WORLD
15
Friday 7 May (10.45pm) Director Terry Zwigoff Cast Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi, Brad Renfro USA 2001,1h41m
Adapted from Daniel Clowes’ cult graphic novel, this black comedy is a love letter to teenage sarcasm and heartache. Enid (Birch) and her sullen best mate (Johansson) sneer at all the conformity around them, only to discover their options after high school are severely limited. When Enid decides to pick upon a lonely record collector (Buscemi) she realises that he’s the exact opposite of everything she hates. Strikingly original, Ghost World ranks among the most insightful portrayals of modern adolescence.
20th Anniversary Screening:
WILD AT HEART Friday 21 May (10.45pm) Director David Lynch Cast Nicholas Cage, Laura Dern, Diane Ladd, Harry Dean Stanton USA 1990, 2h4m
Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, David Lynch’s bizarre paean to The Wizard of Oz (1939) has divided critics and audiences ever since. A petty criminal called Sailor (Cage) is on the run with his Southern belle Lula (Dern) from her deranged mother who wants the handsome outlaw dead. An exhilarating ride through the dark heart of America, brimming with Lynch’s trademark assortment of kitsch and unsettling characters while the onscreen romance stirs up enough passion to melt celluloid. Before Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (page 13) blew us all away, Nicholas Cage gives an electrifying performance as a convict with a heart of gold and penchant for Elvis.
