IN PERSON & OVER THE PHONE You can purchase tickets for film screenings from Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) Box Office during opening hours (daily from 12.00 – 20.00). Please note there is a £1.50 transaction fee for telephone bookings. ONLINE Most tickets can be purchased from the website www.glasgowfilm.org/gyff. Tickets for events at GFT can be purchased online up until one hour before the performance. No booking fee. Glasgow Youth Film Festival 2014 Named by The Skinny as ‘Scotland’s most innovative film festival,’ GYFF is back with another amazing line-up of films, workshops, events, and opportunities to dress up in silly outfits, all programmed by our talented Youth Team. Highlights this year include a special screening of the latest DreamWorks animation, Mr Peabody and Sherman 3D, Lukas Moodysson’s new teen-punk comedy, We Are the Best!, and Tim Burton’s classic Beetlejuice in our late night slot. We have an extra special anime day this year with a great selection of UK premieres: The Wind Rises, rumoured to be legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s last film; the first movie version of hit manga, Blue Exorcist; and an exciting mystery film alongside the return of our popular Red Carpet Cosplay Parade. We are super excited about our Closing Band Night, featuring up-and-coming musical and visual talent. Glasgow-based ambient-electronic maestros, Inuit, are collaborating with filmmaker and artist, Ania Urbanowska, to create an unmissable performance. See page 11 for full details. Opening Gala: We Are the Best! Monday 3 February (18.15), GFT Thirteen-year-old anarchists Bobo and Klara decide to form their own punk band and do battle with the more straightlaced teenagers at their school. A tribute to non-conformists everywhere and the power of music to change lives. Directed by versatile Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson (Show Me Love, Lilya 4-Ever). Closing Gala: I Feel Like Disco Wednesday 12 February (18.00), GFT Florian is an average German teenager with an obsession with famous crooner Christian Steiffen and a bedroom full of disco balls. He develops a crush on his father’s diving student, Radu, who isn’t best pleased about being labelled gay. The UK premiere of rising star Axel Ranisch’s first feature film.

Family Gala: Mr Peabody and Sherman 3D Sunday 2 February (15.30), GFT Mr Peabody is a talking dog and the smartest being in the world. Using an ingenious invention, he travels back in time with his ‘pet’ boy, Sherman, experiencing world-changing historical events first hand. However, disaster strikes and the intrepid pair must act quickly to avoid destroying the space-time continuum. Teenage Tuesday 4 February (18.30), GFT Matt Wolf’s absorbing film documents the historical creation of the teenager over the course of the twentieth century. Archive footage, diary entries, and an electronic score by Bradford Cox (Deerhunter) merge to recreate adolescence in an immersive and provocative experience. Stand Clear of the Closing Doors Wednesday 5 February (17.50), GFT A unique insight into the life of a young person living with autism: thirteen-year-old Ricky disappears and rides New York’s subway system for days on end whilst his parents and sister struggle to bring him home. Talea Thursday 6 February (18.30), GFT Jasmin is desperate to hang out with her mother, Eva, who has recently been released from prison. The pair bond until Eva’s romantic interest in a man disrupts their growing closeness. It Felt Like Love Thursday 6 February (20.45), GFT Lila is jealous of her friend Chiara’s string of boyfriends and develops an obsession with older teen, Sammy, whose dope-smoking friends mistreat her. A wholly fresh interpretation of teenage passions, named by Indiewire one of the ten greatest films about female sexuality by a female director, It Felt Like Love charts adolescent awakening in a gritty Brooklyn setting. Fame High Friday 7 February (20.30) GFT A clear-eyed combination of coming-of-age story and documentarymusical, Fame High follows the lives of four students from the prestigious Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Beetlejuice Friday 7 February (23.00) GFT Recently deceased Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) haunt their old home in an attempt to scare away its new tenants. Getting desperate, the dead couple employ miscreant Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a freelance ‘bio-exorcist’, to help them out. We will be giving out a prize for the best Beetlejuice-themed costume! Project Ability: Young Talent on Screen Saturday 8 February (12.00), GFT Project Ability presents the opening event of its 2014 Young Talent on Screen Film Festival. A Story of Children and Film Saturday 8 February (13.15), GFT A rich and personal cine-essay which explores the role of children in film and highlights favourite images of childhood in movies from around the world. You might not have seen a lot of these films but smart editing and Cousins’ passion for cinema will leave you spellbound and desperate to watch more. cfijp GYFF Shorts: Growing Pains Saturday 8 February (14.00) GFT A teenager’s life as seen entirely through his computer screen, traumatic lunchtime scenes at an eating disorder clinic, and a serious case of quiff envy. GYFF presents original short films depicting teen lives in a programme inspired by Matt Wolf’s documentary Teenage (see page 5). Filmmaker Ruth Paxton, director of successful shorts Paris/Sexy and Nevada, will take part in a post-screening discussion on telling coming-of-age stories in film. Playground Chronicles Saturday 8 February (16.00), GFT It’s 1980 in a Parisian suburb. Ten-year-old Brahim passes the summer with his passion for photography, an innocent crush, and a troubled best friend whose family are political refugees from Chile. Leave to Remain Saturday 8 February (18.00) GFT An emotional journey based on real-life accounts by teenage asylum seekers who come to the UK to escape horrific circumstances in their home countries. The Dirties Saturday 8 February (20.45), GFT Two film geeks are picked on by a group of school bullies they call ‘The Dirties’ and decide to make a Tarantino-esque movie about taking revenge on their tormentors. GMAC Film Academy: Reimagining Gregory’s Girl Sunday 9 February (13.00), GFT An exploration of mise-en-scène through diverse reimaginings of Bill Forsyth’s classic, Gregory’s Girl, by talented young filmmakers. Participants in GMAC’s BFI Film Academy will screen their reinterpretations of a scene from the cult Scottish film, and discuss the motivation behind their approaches. Blue Exorcist the Movie Sunday 9 February (13.15), GFT The UK premiere of the first standalone film based on hit manga, Blue Exorcist. True Cross Academy is preparing for a festival when mysterious demon Usamaro appears. Twin brothers Rin and Yukio are sent to the scene to help out. The White Balloon Sunday 9 February (14.45), GFT Featured in documentary A Story of Children and Film (see page 6), Jafar Panahi’s (The Circle, This Is Not a Film) poetic representation of childhood follows seven-year-old Razieh, who covets a goldfish whilst on a shopping trip with her mother. Eventually obtaining the money she needs to purchase the fish, Razieh loses it and must enlist the help of an assortment of passers-by to retrieve it again. The Wind Rises Sunday 9 February (15.45), GFT Director Hayao Miyazaki’s last film before retirement, The Wind Rises, based on his manga of the same name, is the fictionalised biography of Jiro Horikoshi, a designer of fighter aircraft used by the Empire of Japan in the Second World War. Mystery Anime Film & Cosplay Red Carpet Parade Sunday 9 February (19.00), GFT Thanks to Scotland Loves Anime, we have a great UK premiere lined up for you. My Mad Fat Diary: Cast & Crew Masterclass Friday 7 February (18.15), GFT My Mad Fat Diary follows Rae (BAFTA ‘Breakthrough Brit’ Sharon Rooney), a music-mad sixteen-year-old with body image problems. Debuting on E4 in 2013, the show has attracted over a million viewers, with a second series due to launch in 2014. Members of the cast and crew will join us to share the secrets of My Mad Fat Diary’s success. Tickets are free and will be available from box office on the day of the event. Game Jam Monday 10 February (18.00 – 21.00), Geek Retreat, Union Street Come along and play the best games from Caledonian University’s 2014 Scottish Game Jam. Closing Band Night Wednesday 12 February (20.00 – 23.00), Scottish Youth Theatre, Brunswick Street Celebrate the closing night of GYFF with a showcase of up-and-coming Scottish bands and artists. Headlining is Inuit, who use atmospherics and dynamics to create music verging from lush soundscapes to huge walls of noise. They will be joined by filmmaker Ania Urbanowska, who will add her minimalist, surreal visuals to produce a spectacular collaborative performance. With support from Fiesta Minor, Lylo, and more. Comedy Writing Masterclass with Robert Florence Wednesday 5 February (18.00-20.00), The Albany Centre Learn how to write great comedy scripts with comedian and writer Robert Florence. Robert writes for and stars in BBC Scotland’s comedy sketch show Burnistoun, produced by The Comedy Unit. He was a core writer for Chewin’ the Fat and wrote the sitcom series Legit and Empty. He has also performed on Frankie Boyle’s Tramadol Nights for Channel 4. Movie Poster Design Workshop Saturday 8 February (13.00-16.00), Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Hosted by Jen Davies, who looks after marketing and design for international film distributor Park Circus, this is both a practical and theoretical workshop looking at everything involved in designing movie posters. You’ll learn what makes a great poster, how posters fit into the film marketing mix, how to come up with ideas, selecting typography, and the nuts and bolts of putting posters together. Media Trust presents: Documentary Skills with David Street Sunday 9 February (12.00-16.00), Royal Conservatoire of Scotland David Street spent his early career working on shows such as Coronation Street and World in Action. Back then, equipment was so cumbersome and expensive that only a lucky few could use it. With the arrival of inexpensive HD cameras and easy-to-use editing software, filmmaking is more accessible than ever. Pop-Up! Festival Panel Sunday 9 February (16.30-19.00), GMAC Want to put on your own film events outside of a cinema space? Film and arts festivals all over the world are increasingly using more diverse venues, from shop fronts to pedal-powered screenings, community venues to film tents at music festivals, often transforming towns and cities into one big cinema screen. To hear more about how festivals stage film premieres, site-specific installations, and live events, come along to hear a panel of experts reveal how to go about setting up projectors in interesting spaces. dvcc tlohpelmp Zombie Make-up Workshop Tuesday 11 February (10.30 –12.00), Platform, Easterhouse Learn how to turn your friends and family into reanimated corpses with this hands-on zombie make-up workshop. Expert theatrical make-up artists will show you how to create your own ghoulish zombie characters. Use techniques to make rotting flesh, cuts, wounds, and dripping blood…the scarier the better! POP-UP! PROGRAMMERS We are Pop-Up! Programmers, a diverse group of 18 to 24-year-olds who create exciting film events and make cinema accessible in community spaces. This February we have four FREE unique film events ‘popping up’ across Glasgow and Ayr in places you would not expect to see films... COVER DESIGN BY AIDAN O’ROURKE, MARK LENNON AND JONATHAN LENNON This year, the cover design for the GYFF brochure was created by Aidan O’Rourke, Mark Lennon and Jonathan Lennon. All three designers are currently students of the Visual Arts Studio based in Tramway and are applying to the Communication Design course at Glasgow School of Art.
