Paul Stankard is known for his paperweights, celebrating nature as a magical realism for over 35 years. His work is represented in over 50 major museums around the world. He is a Fellow of the American Craft Council, a recipient of the UrbanGlass Award Innovation in a Glassworking Technique, and a recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Rowan University and Muskingum College. Stankard also authored an autobiography titled, No Green Berries or Leaves: The Creative Journey of an Artist in Glass.

Peter Layton has worked for nearly 40 years to develop and promote glass art in the UK and Europe. He was a founding member of British Artists in Glass and the Contemporary Glass Society. Prague-born, this England-raised artist received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Bradford, has been granted the Freedom of the City of London and is an Honorary Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers, helping them establish the valuable Glass Sellers Prize. He is the author of several books including Glass Art. In 1976, Layton established the London Glassblowing Workshop. Its gallery hosts individual and group shows of both established and emerging artists.

In his long career, Elio Quarisa worked at the finest glass factories in Murano, beginning at Barovier Toso, where he started at the age of nine to help support his family after his father died. He rose quickly at Barovier Toso, reaching the level of Primo Maestro (Italian for “First Master”). After 27 years, he moved to Seguso Vetri d’Arte, the first of several leading firms where he was a sought-after consultant and technician by some of the top designers. His love for glass work and his desire to guarantee the Murano glass tradition led him, in his retirement, to teach future generations.

Flame Lover 2014 Low-Relief Technique: flameworking and kiln casting 40 x 35 x 15 cm $3,600 USD Lucio Bubacco has been working with glass since his childhood in Murano. Today he is considered one of the best figure makers in flameworking and his works are inside the most important glass museum collections. He is always open to trying new ideas and to combine different glass techniques. M. Fatih Duruerk is the co-owner of Karma Design Studio whose aim is to develop the studio glass movement in Turkey. With the notion of “urban fragility” he and Ömür Duruerk design urban glass objects. As a social responsibility they try to create awareness about recycling glass under the name of Recycle Design Project.

Born in Ithaca, New York, Ethan Stern currently lives in Seattle, WA where he owns a glass studio. Stern’s work is widely exhibited and is currently featured in the collections of Eboltoft Glass Museum in Denmark, the Museum of American Glass in New Jersey and Palm Springs Art Museum in California. Jay Macdonell is a classically trained glassblower who has worked for many Pacific Northwest studios and artists as a gaffer, design consultant and project manager. He has taught at various schools including Espace VERRE, Bay Area Glass Institute and Pilchuck. He has been a gaffer for Pilchuck for artists such as Xu Bing, Jiří Harcuba, Barbara Cooper, Heather Oakson and Angelo Filmeno. Jay was an artist in residence at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, The Bay Area Glass Institute and ACAD. His work is in many private collections such as Elton John, the Bronfman family’s Clairage collection and also the Museum of Glass and Montreal Museum’s permanent collection.

As his father’s farm dried up in thirst, the boy’s imagination was high above the fields, flying planes of freedom 2014 Cast glass, mixed media 18” x 35” (11” glass) x 3” $4,000 USD Cassandra Straubing’s sculptural work addresses issues of domestic, agricultural and industrial labor using multiple mediums and processes including glass and metal fabrication. She employs a wide range of glass-forming techniques including casting, blowing, hot forming and non-traditional glass processes. Currently the Glass Faculty Head and Studio Coordinator at San Jose State University, she received an MFA in glass from Rochester Institute of Technology and a BFA in studio art from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Haulenbeek graduated first in his class in Design Objects at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago in 2006. Since then he has worked as a designer for Formation Design Group and Holly Hunt. His work exhibits a mastery of materials and aesthetic simplicity through a very hands-on experimental prototyping style.

Recent exhibitions include The Keeper’s Lament at The Rochester Contemporary, Glass Curiosities at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, Recollections at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, International Glass at the National Museum in L’viv, Ukraine and Vessels-Collection at Koganezaki Glass Museum, Ugusu Nishiizu-cho, Japan. In 2007 Michael was awarded the Lillian Fairchild Award from The University of Rochester.

Large-scale public and private art glass installations are Katz’s and art partner Chris Klein’s forte – art glass integrated into architecture. Meltdown Glass studio also fabricates for other artists. Katz’s “Winged Victory” torso series explores the literal and interpretive aspects of the human figure in painted cast-glass. She communicates her ideas making reference to the figure’s superficial skin as a conceptual membrane, the projective barrier between the person’s interior and exterior world.

Alex Gabriel Bernstein received an MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and went on to teach at RIT, the Cleveland Institute of Art, Penland School of Crafts, The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass. and Worcester Center for Crafts in Massachusetts, but returned to Asheville in 2007 to set up a studio and focus on creating his own work full-time. Bernstein has recently mounted solo shows at Chappell Gallery in NYC; Hooks Epstein Gallery in Houston; Habatat Gallery in Royal Oak, Michigan; and Traver Gallery, Seattle. His work is included in numerous collections, including the Corning Museum of Glass, the Glasmuseum Frauenau in Germany, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others. James Riviello, Director of Glassworks at West Supply, received his BFA in glass from Tyler School of Art, and his MFA from Southern Illinois University. Over the past 20 years, he has dedicated much of his career to teaching glassmaking, and helping create several educational glass centers and art school studios. Since 2009, he has been focused on creating a new niche in the design industry for glass artisans. “21st century technology combined with the creativity of glass artists, has huge potential for art, design, and architecture of the future,” he says.

Richard Royal, a native of the Northwest and resident of Seattle, is recognized internationally as one of the most skilled and talented glassblowers in the American Studio Glass Movement. Royal began working as a hot glass sculptor in 1978 at the Pilchuck Glass School. He worked his way through the ranks to find himself as one of Dale Chihuly’s main assistants, which consequently led to Royal’s emergence in the fine art glass world in the early 1980s. Royal has since been exhibiting his work internationally in solo and group exhibitions for over 30 years. His work is included in renowned public and private collections worldwide. He continues to teach as both a guest artist and teacher at various universities and at Pilchuck Glass School.

By researching historical forms of ornament and the social function of beads and jewelry, these forms are reinterpreted in a contemporary context, each piece serving as a meditation through which historical cycles and political landscapes can be explored. Lemaire received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. She is currently the Director of the Bead Project at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, NY and Adjunct Professor in the Glass Art program at Salem Community College in New Jersey. Pearl Dick is an artist who works primarily with glass. Her sculptures depict and celebrate the deep human connection she feels that we share. Pearl studied glass and painting at Alfred University and has taught at Penland School of Crafts. In 2006 she helped to establish the Glassworks program through the Chicago non-profit, Co-op Image, which provides art education programming to teens in under-resourced communities. Pearl is currently the Artistic Director of Ignite Glass Studios in Chicago, where she continues her artistic practice along with the development of educational and community outreach programs.

Holly Hunt leads HOLLY HUNT, the company, as CEO and is intimately involved in design and creative work. In 1983, she began in the interior design business by buying a small showroom in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, which she filled with the best-of- class luxury designer collections. The HOLLY HUNT brand has become the premier design and distribution entity for high-end interior furnishings in the country. Recently HH has expanded internationally with showrooms in Brazil and London. The Spectacles Table was designed by HH Design Director Alberto Velez and was one of the first collaborations in cast bronze and cast glass between HH and West Supply.

An associate professor of art at Southern Illinois University, Lee has headed the glass program since 2005. Lee was born and raised in South Korea. As an instructor, he has also taught at the Pilchuck Glass School, the Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass, Pittsburgh Glass Center, the Domaine de Boisbuchet in France, Canberra Glassworks in Australia, Fire Station Artists’ Studios in Dublin, Ireland, and various other art institutions and universities nationally and internationally. His work has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally.

His works are well-conceived juxtapositions of material and concept that lock the two together into unique sculptural form. Miles received his Bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College while studying the Indonesian language, mask-making and woodcarving with Javanese and Balinese masters. He has since worked with many professional artists while converting an abandoned marble quarry along the Delaware River into a modern bronze foundry and glass studio, where he now lives and works.

Designer and maker, Cariati’s work has received international attention and is currently available at fine retail establishments worldwide. Joe owns and operates 141 Penn Studios and Joe Cariati Glass in Los Angeles; a studio and team committed to creating blown glass with an effortless, “less is more” approach.

Vittorio Costantini was born in 1944, on the island of Burano, which is near Murano. He began an apprenticeship in a glass factory at the early age of 11. Vittorio always had an innate fascination for nature, discovered when he went fishing (with the big nets) together with his grandfather, his father and uncles: Birds in the sky, fish in the sea, flowers in the lagoon of Venice, insects in the ground... From these experiences and the techniques learned in the factories Vittorio creates his flameworked pieces.

All purchases are final and must be paid for and removed from the premises at the end of the auction at 7pm. To pay, simply see the cashiers located just outside of the Adams Ballroom. Items that are not removed will be shipped at the purchaser’s expense. No exchanges or refunds are allowed. GAS assumes no responsibility for the shipping of purchases or for those items not picked up immediately after the auction.
