Hi Everyone
L
ast Saturday morning I was reminded just how much many of
our ‘more mature’ local residents have really embraced technology and what an integral part of their lives it has become. I went along to the ‘Technology Day’ held at the Beerwah Hall, organised by members of the University of the Third Age – Beerwah Grafx group. Some in our community still think that technology is the world for the young, but seeing all of the information stalls being run by ‘not so young’ Beerwah Grafx group was really inspiring. Kids of today grow up playing games on their parent’s Iphones or in some cases their own Ipads (an essential

item these days for the two-year-olds) but plenty of their grandmas and grandpas are just as connected in. While grabbing a drink, I heard two older ladies discussing the merits of ‘dropbox’ for storing their photos, one granddad talking about how Skype has changed his life allowing him to have regular contact with his grandkids overseas, and another talking about how they loved being able to keep up with their family through Facebook. It made me smile, as I’m not someone who is always the first to embrace new technology. Now I know I have some great mentors and role models in the Beerwah Grafx group that are so generous with their time and knowledge.

Local News
A sad day Last Wednesday was a sad day in our local community when two elderly Beerwah locals lost their lives in a car accident at the corner of Bowen Road and Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains. QLD Police Traffic Branch, (as reported in other local media), suggested that the intersection could not be blamed for the accident, reminding us that roads don't cause accidents, rather driver error does. However the incident has certainly reignited the discussion about the need for Steve Irwin Way to be upgraded. One Bowen Road resident contacted us and said … “I think it’s fair to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I am a Bowen Road resident and can talk from experience. I’ve been T-boned there, along with a
lot of others. This is becoming too regular – two this week including this fatality is terrible. “The intersection is dangerous. “Cars turning into Bowen Road from Steve Irwin Way can bank back a fair way, making it very hard to see cars travelling down Steve Irwin Way. “If you are coming from Bowen Road turning right into Steve Irwin Way, and there is a line of cars turning left into Bowen Road, you can’t always see the cars coming down Steve Irwin way, and so it is very easy just to pull out thinking the way is clear, and suddenly there’s a car,” the resident said. What do you think? Is that intersection safe? Are there any other intersections you think need to be improved for safety reasons? Let us know at editorial@gcnews.com.au or PO Box 99, Beerwah, QLD, 4518.
Beerwah hit again by vandals Last Friday night, vandals burnt down the picnic shelter in Turner Park, Beerwah. It appears rubbish bins had been set alight, resulting in the furniture and frame of the shelter catching alight and the whole structure collapsing. Local Councillor, Rick Baberowski said the damage was such a mindless waste. “On Saturday, staff organised for the site to be
made safe for the public, and we have asked for a police report to be made into the incident.”

An update on local works in progress
Better mobile service a step closer Glass House Mountains locals may have noticed some recent activity at the Jeffreys Road site of the planned new Telstra mobile phone tower. The barrier fencing has been installed and a porta-loo is in place - signals that something is in the pipeline. GCNews confirmed with Telstra that the tower construction is about to get under way. “Ground works, including casting the foundations

is to start after Easter,” confirmed the Telstra spokesperson. “The new concrete monopole is to be delivered to the site in early June. Construction of the new pole had been delayed by the flooding in Rockhampton, where manufacturer Rocla is based. “The construction is expected to be complete approximately by the end of June 2013,” the spokesperson said.
Landsborough intersection work to begin mid-year Upgrade work is set to begin mid-year at a notoriously deadly intersection at Landsborough following a fierce campaign by locals and Caloundra MP Mark McArdle. The Department of Transport and Main Roads last year confirmed it would fast-track the delivery of the Safer Roads Sooner (SRS) Program, which included future installation of traffic signals at Steve Irwin Way, Hardwood Road and Railway Street Landsborough, ahead of the scheduled timeframe of 2014-15. Caloundra MP Mark McArdle has recently received notification from the Regional Director
for TMR confirming there had been a delay in completing the design for the project. “I have been told the design is now complete and it is still expected that construction can begin as early as midway through the year,’’ Mr McArdle said. “This is a wonderful result not only for the people of the Hinterland, but also for the thousands of people who travel past this intersection on Steve Irwin Way each year. “I have requested a copy of the design and will be keeping an eye on the construction process of the installation of traffic lights at this intersection to ensure it stays on target.’’

The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause.
or visit our showroom at Shutters
It is estimated that approximately 85 per cent of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis.

Beerwah Marketplace set for redevelopment The face of Beerwah is set to change forever. At the Sunshine Coast Council Ordinary Meeting held Thursday, March 28, a decision was finally made to approve the redevelopment plans for the Beerwah Marketplace. Village Fair Investments – which owns the site – have plans for a retail floor space area of over 11,000m2, including Target, Supa IGA and specialty stores. Cr Rick Baberowski is excited that the project will
provide a much-needed boost to Beerwah. “This development will deliver a major upgrade to the look and functioning of the town. “It’s the stimulus the town needs and will overlap well with the start of council’s ‘Place +’ streetscape upgrade. “The two projects together provide the opportunity to take back and hold some of the expenditure that was leaking from the local economy.

Scrap metal recycling assists Twinnies Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue will share in more than $75,000 along with 25 other groups from across south east Queensland as part of the latest Energex Community and Sustainability Fund (ECSF) sponsorships. The service will receive $5,000.00 which they will put towards running training workshops. Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said the Energex Community and Sustainability Fund turns the phrase ‘one person’s trash is another person’s treasure’ into reality, with scrap materials being recycled to raise money for important community and sustainability projects in south east Queensland. The ECSF sponsorships support Energex corporate objective of delivering sustainable outcomes for south east Queensland. In the 2011- 2012 financial year this recycling included 1,529 tonnes of timber, 3,863 tonnes of scrap

The 80.7 million dollars that the Federal Government has allocted to construct an interchange for the Roys Road and Bells Creek Road intersections with the Bruce Highway looks set to begin mid-year. At the time, details of the actual project were few and far between. However, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have now called for tenders for the construction, which closes April 16. According to a TMR spokesperson, the new interchange aims to improve safety for local and highway traffic, accommodate future traffic growth and improve connectivity between our local communities. “We anticipate work could begin as early as mid-year and may take about 18 months to complete, weather permitting,” said the spokesperson. “A layout of the new interchange and more information on the key features of the project will be available after the contract for construction has been awarded and announced.”

“The improved mix of tenancies and upgraded streetscape will help retain and attract more shopping in the local economy. “The imminent developments will also put us in a stronger position to further establish and then maintain Beerwah's attraction as a district centre. This is particularly important given the raft of strong offers which will be coming to 'shop here' from new competition such as Caloundra South, Kawana Town Centre, Palmview and Sippy Downs,” he said.

Last year we caught up with Landsborough local Judi Tompkins, one of only a handful of individuals across the state who has been actively involved in the craft of traditional rug hooking for many years. In days gone by, rug hooking (which is sometimes mistaken with a much more recent and popular craft known as latch hooking) served not only to beautify the home, but was also a way to recycle scraps of other fabrics and materials, supporting the philosophy of thrift. Judi is now spreading the word, on behalf of the Australian Rug Hooking Guild, to find anyone who might have done this craft (not latch hooking) or may have old tools or even have old rugs. Judi said she’d like to be able to photograph any existing rugs and record the stories behind them to build the Queensland history of this craft for the Australian guild. “The response I received from the story last year was really pleasing and has meant that we have now established two groups who I meet with on a monthly basis at the Beerwah Library and share the skills and techniques required for them to produce their own work,” Judi said. As a result of the growing interest in the craft here and around the country there is now a demand from rug hookers for well priced, quality equipment that they can purchase with in Australia. “I believe there is a real opportunity for a cottage industry to be developed to supply these craftspeople, both with timber frames and metal hooks. “More recently, I have been
liaising with the local Menshed about the idea and they have expressed an interest in being part of the solution, however with the growing demand it would be great if I could find additional talented woodworkers and metalworkers that would like to create work for themselves,” Judi said. The photo below shows one of the basic timber frame styles that rug hookers use, however there are a number of different styles required. If you are interested in finding out more about making the frames, or have any old equipment or rugs that you would like to share with Judi she would love to hear from you. Give her a call on 5494 8179 or send her an email judi.tompkins@bigpond.com Or for more information on this age old craft, visit Australia’s Traditional Rug Makers and the Australian Rugmakers Guild website at www.rughookingaustralia.com.au

Early retirement for well known Kindy teacher
It is with great sadness to announce that our much loved kindy teacher, Val Simpson, is taking an early retirement towards the end of April. Val has been with Landsborough Kindy for 19 years and has had a major influence on shaping the futures of our children during this time. Val is undoubtedly the cornerstone of our kindergarten community and will be sorely missed by many locals. Any past families who wish to say goodbye to Val are welcome to come and visit the kindy. We are open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, during school terms. She would love to have you visit. We wish Val and her family all the best for the future and look forward to receiving some postcards from her travels! Thank you for being the best Kindy teacher ever!

Beerwah State School's 125th Anniversary In 1888, Beerwah’s community proudly opened the Beerwah State School. One hundred and twenty five years later, the school would be unrecognisable to those early pioneers who stood proudly outside the one-room school building on the side of the hill facing Peachester Road. The original building is long gone and other buildings have been built, remodelled and replaced over the years with state of the art facilities being added in recent years. The casual observer driving past the school can still see the iconic tree lined landscape which has remained constant over the decades. For many past students, staff and parents, the mango trees planted by the students in 1921 at the top of the central driveway, would provide an instant reminder of their days spent at the school. For an opportunity to revisit the school and to catch up with old friends and reminisce, past students, staff, parents and community members are invited to join in the 125th Anniversary celebrations on Saturday, June 8. The anniversary has been combined with the Beerwah State School’s Big Night Out school fete to ensure that this will be a very special occasion. Visitors to the school will be able to sign on from 11.00am with the official celebrations ceremony at 12.00noon. All the fun of the Beerwah’s Big Night Out will get underway at 1.00pm with displays, stalls and special events throughout the afternoon culminating with the fireworks at 7.00pm.
Middle School Captain Karli Goad with Prep students Abbey Wells and Darcy Cross walk through history with Beerwah State School celebrating its 125th year As part of the development of visual and digital displays, the school is seeking photographs and memorabilia from people who have been involved with the school over the years. Please register your interest in the 125th Anniversary celebrations by contacting the school through the dedicated email: 125anniversary@ beerwahss.eq.edu.au. The program and more information about the day will be available on the school’s Website http:// beerwahss.eq.edu.au.

Doug and Heather bought the farm on the corner of Old Gympie and Lindeman Road Beerwah – where his grandson Cameron still farms today. Doug was a man with a strong community spirit. With many of his mates he instigated much of the infrastructure that became so important to the local community, including the Beerwah Golf Club. He was also part of the establishment of the Ambulance Sub Branch and was on the RSL committee. In 1961 Doug levelled the Beerwah State School parking area for the visitor’s car park for the 75th Jubilee celebrations of school. Doug was very active in Lions. Doug Stephens and after a courtship of three years they married in November, 1948. Doug and Heather had many happy years helping to grow a community, pineapples, tomatoes, and most importantly to them both, their family – Lynette, Ross, Barry and Jeffrey. Unfortunately Heather passed in 1986 and Doug had lost his fishing buddy. But life goes on and he met Joan Morris. In 1992 Doug and Joan moved to Toorbul, where they lived happily for the last 20 odd years fishing, boating and with Doug making his famous home brew. There is a spot in the passage that is affectionately known by family and friends as ‘Doug’s Corner’ – his favourite anchor spot. Doug was proud of his achievements, proud of his children, his grandchildren and his great children. He was happy with his life.

Amazing Melody at technology day One of the talented techies who participated in the University of the Third Age (U3A) – Technology Day was Melody Davis, a highly motivated 15-yearold student in her final year at Kings Christian College on the Gold Coast. When she was just 14, Melody started turning her passion for photography into a small business using help from family, mentors and Facebook. Melody’s grandparents, who live in Glass House Mountains, are part of the group that helped organise ‘Technology Day’ at Beerwah Community Hall last Saturday. Melody was available to speak to young people (and older) about how she set up her business while still at school; she also demonstrated some of her techniques on a photo shoot in Turner Park. Inside the Hall there were demonstrations of studio photography as well as advanced slide scanning and creative videography with green screen as well as the absolutely newest technology of 3D Printing and Raspberry Pi a $40.00 toy computer. All day, members of U3A Beerwah Grafx Group were happy to share their knowledge on editing photos in Adobe Photoshop, Elements, Lightroom or the Free Picasa quick fix program. This is a great opportunity to get one-on-one help from an enthusiastic group who love to share their knowledge with others. Another popular part of the day was finding out how to make holiday pictures into movies in Pinnacle Studio or Windows Movie Maker with ongoing demonstrations throughout the day. Happy th Birthday 29 to us
A comment recently from a chamber member was the community perception is that the chamber does not represent the community and doesn’t do anything. I would like to take a minute to advise residents of the Chamber of Commerce’s role. The Glasshouse Country Chamber is the grassroots level of the Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland (CCIQ). We are the rubber on the road. Chamber members are business owners who pay an annual membership, which gives them access to a wide range of services provided by CCIQ. The chamber is also represented on the Sunshine Coast Chamber of Commerce Alliance, representing 16 chambers on the Sunshine Coast, for which the chamber pays an affiliation. The chamber is not a Residents or Progress association although the chamber may lobby council and government for similar outcomes. The local work is done on a voluntary basis, with members giving their time to improve business outcomes and services for the Glasshouse Country Communities. It is often said that CCIQ is the trade union for small business. Small business contributes significantly to the operation of all levels of government. Business provides local jobs, levied with fees and charges just to be able to provide a service to your community. These fees and charges contribute to generating a level of control by bureaucrats dreaming up new ways to use more Red or Green tape while leaving the common sense locked away. For this you also have to pay more! It is difficult to demonstrate to the public what the chamber network does, except by making sure shops stay open and businesses continue to provide the services the community expects. The most significant recent comment from the mayor was in relation to the Sunshine Coast Plaza expansion. He said, “if it stops people spending their money in Brisbane, that’s a good outcome.” Glasshouse Country Communities have many businesses providing you with the services you require. May I leave you ponder this thought. “Check out your local suppliers before going outside your local community.” Sale volume speaks volumes when you require the best service. Contributed by Roz Kuss On Thursday, April 18, guest speaker at Caloundra Family History’s meeting will be our member, Mr Ian Edwardson. Like all Ian’s presentations, his talk at the meeting, with a military subject, will once again be thoroughly researched and contain many facts which will ensure a keen interest by the members. Visitors are welcome at the general meetings which commence at 1.30pm sharp, at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra. Just a couple of days later, all things Scottish will be displayed at the Guide Hut, when we welcome Malcolm J Ferguson Esq. and Capt. Grahame L Jardine-Vidgen (Ret’d) to the podium at the Scotland Seminar. These gentlemen, each with numerous impressive credentials will be speaking on the Clan System, Scottish history and their ancestry with the Clans Fergusson and Jardine. They will be joined by Ann Swain, a researcher for 38 years and founding member of the Queensland Family History Society. Ann’s talk will concentrate on researching Scottish roots, so a variety of subjects will be covered during the afternoon. Malcolm and Grahame will be wearing their kilts, and as part of their presentations, both will be displaying the ceremonial costumes of their positions of office. The presentations will include time for questions and answers on all the topics. The seminar will commence at 1.00pm; entry fee is $15.00 for members and $20.00 for nonmembers and includes a Scottish afternoon tea. Ethel Burgess was Dayton's Elder and is pictured on the right with Craig, Joanne and sisters Kameli and Nailani as Dayton cuts his Baptism cake. Dayton will be joining the church playgroup next term.
Beerwah Golf Club News
Contributed by Jenny Kelly As you may all remember, Beerwah Golf Club lost one of its landmark trees as a result of the nasty weather brought on by ex cyclone Oswald. The original Willett tree had been planted by Life Member Eric Willett and took pride of place beside the 9th green. During the week, a replacement tree, kindly provided by Eric's long time friend Col Penney, was planted in the same spot. This new tree should have lots of time to settle in before having to resist the extreme weather conditions which affected the original.
Extra hands required at the Museum Landsborough Museum has butter making down pat. Jan advises that if you want success make sure your cream isn’t too fresh and is warmish rather than cold. Never use low fat or whipping cream. Add salt if storing and for a really awesome delicacy, add a touch of fresh garlic and herbs. Jan has been the ‘Queen of butter making’ for some time and would love to share the position with some new folk. If you would like to know what this involves, leave your name at the front counter or phone 5494 1755 Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sundays. You can also email landsboroughmuseum@aapt.net.au. Tom and Kay do a fine job keeping the museum clean but would really appreciate some help with vacuuming the building between 8.00am and 9.00am one day per week. If you can help, contact us.

Glasshouse Mountains Musician’s Club Contributed by Michael Whitticker A good time was had by all at the Musos Club last Thursday, although being the beginning of the Easter break, we didn’t have a big audience in attendance. Special guests for the evening included Noel Gardner and Alex Bridge. Amongst their set were songs of Peter Allen, Rodriguez and James Taylor plus the standout item for me - the very beautiful ‘Ready for the Storm’ by Dougie MacLean. Noel and Alex’s set featured their superb harmonies and Noel’s strong finger picking guitar style. Another guest who is also a particularly fine guitarist and is always welcome at the Musos is Ian Williams. He played, as did the aforementioned act, from memory and it was a varied and heartfelt set in which for me the Eric Clapton numbers stood out. A big thank you to Adrian Powell for joining Ian on drum kit for the Big Bill Broonzy classic ‘Hey Hey’. It was also satisfying to hear Ian’s performance on his ‘bodiless’ Yamaha guitar of the Ralph Towner instrumental ‘Anthem’. Later in the evening we
Landsborough Playgroup Re-energised for 2013
The Landsborough playgroup that has run in the past years at the CWA house on Old Landsborough Road will start up again after the Easter school holidays. This group will be supported by the Caloundra and Hinterland Family support worker, the Landsborough Child Care Centre and Morris House Neighbourhood Centre. The group will kick off on Tuesday, April 16 from 9.30am - 11.30am and meet weekly to provide a nurturing and caring shared environment where both you and your children can have fun and meet new people. Please phone Wendy for details and to register your interest in joining this new playgroup on 5429 6766 or 0423 716 705.
had the pleasure of Ian and Paul Fagan leading a scratch band – the Glasshouse Bushrangers, with Doug on bass and a sit-in drummer – Jeff, on the kit along with Noel and Alex hopping up to add some harmonies. The full, throaty vocal performance and Paul’s searing guitar solos were enjoyed by all. Such impromptu sets are a feature of the Musos, and although not always of this quality, it is a highlight of a gathering such as ours. Other acts for the evening included our regulars Tina and Gavin – with Tina (as always in fine voice), assuring us it was their fifth performance, Frank, Pam, Andrew Bilby, The Glasshouse Breakers, Adrian and Doug. Doug Pullen’s set as always includes some surprises. Who else would dare to play ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ followed by the Racing Cars number ‘They shoot horses don’t they’? The Musos meet next on Thursday, April 11 at the Sport Club, followed by Sunday, April 14 at the Coffee and Tea Merchants. Hope to see some of you at one of our upcoming sessions.

This year, many Year 10’s from Glasshouse Country Christian College got a chance to gain some experience for a week, working in the field they’re thinking about as a future career. For work experience I had the joy of working at Glasshouse Country News. It has been an amazing experience, just as it has been for the others that did work experience this week. It has been full on, and I’m pleased that I had the opportunity to do it. The people at GCNews are lovely and friendly, and have shown me the details of what happens with the paper. I’d encourage and recommend others to choose GCNews for their work experience. I was even luckily enough to interview some of the other local kids that were also on work experience. Student Vanita Mens worked at Auscare Glass House Mountains Pharmacy and thoroughly enjoyed her week. “I’ve had a great experience working here, it has been a lot of fun,” Vanita said. She was also very busy experiencing what
goes on in the Pharmacy, everything from serving customers and working the cash register to packing the shelves and vacuuming floors. “The ladies here are wonderful and my career in the future may be in Andrea Little medicine,” she said. Student Andrea Little spent her week at Beerwah Veterinary Surgery. Andrea was all smiles. “It’s really fun being up close and around animals, I have had a great experience at the vets and I’ve got to see a lot of what is done around here,” she Vanita Mens said. It looked like the vets were a top place for someone to gain work experience in the real world and get up close if they’re an animal lover. “I love animals, so being a vet nurse is definitely something I would want to do as a future career. We even had an alpaca come in one day which was cool,” Andrea said.

On Friday, March 15 Beerwah State High held its annual Shave for a Cure. Hundreds of students gathered in the Performing Arts court yard to watch as four students and Mr Brace, our leadership coordinator - shaved their heads. The main event, however, occurred when three very brave senior boys volunteered to have their legs waxed. This proved to be an even greater test of endurance as one of the boys was heard to remark, “I don’t know how the girls can stand this pain!” The event raised over $500.00 for the Leukaemia Foundation, which will help support people with blood cancer and their families. Beerwah State High School would like to extend their sincerest thanks to Ms Kuspiel from Administration and Kelly Wall of Jess Bow Beauty Studio in Beerwah for volunteering their services on the day.
GCCC students Andrea Curtis, Jayme-lee Groer and Emma Johnson show they can laugh over their lost locks Each girl achieved and surpassed their target goal. Jayme-lee Groer (pictured in last week’s GCNews) had a target of $5,000; Emma Johnson’s target was $3,500 and Andrea Curtis decided on a target of $2,000. Emma and Andrea are in Year 9 and Jayme-lee is in Year 11, so it is a time in their lives where having a ‘good hair day’ is very important to a girl. To encourage and support the girls, Glasshouse Country Christian College held a crazy hair and hat day on the last Monday of term. All students from Prep to Year 12 came in their craziest hair or hats and brought a gold coin donation for the Shave for a Cure cause. The total raised from this day was $725.00 which was added to by an icecream fund raiser on the Tuesday. School Principal Mike Curtis said, “I would be proud of such an effort for a school three times our size. This money will do very good things for those who are suffering with blood cancer.”

Creative talent on show
Landsborough State School recently held a whole school Visual Arts Show to showcase the artistic abilities of its students. Artwork created by all classes from Prep to Year 7 was on display. Parents, carers and community members were invited along to view some of the pieces made by the children so far this year. The artworks were created in a broad range of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, design and collage. The quality and diversity of the artwork was very impressive. The school wishes to thank teachers Miss Gibbs, Mrs Faulkner and Mrs Percival who dedicated many hours of their time to make the Art Show a success. Student Madison Pryde shows off the artwork created by her Year 3 class
Easter Bonnets on parade
Landsborough State School celebrated the end of term with their annual Easter Bonnet Parade and concert put on by the younger school children. A colourful display of hand-crafted Easter bonnets filled the hall as students from Prep to Year 3 showed off their creations. Each class performed an Easter song to an audience of fellow students and proud parents. Even the Easter Bunny made a surprise visit to hand out Easter eggs to all the children. It was an exciting day for the children, which set the The Easter Bunny mood for the handed out eggs to Easter holidays. all of the children Prep students, Marissa Ryan and Ella Bierton enjoying the fun of the celebrations
Barnyard bush dance boogie
Contributed by Kylie Gillespie Mooloolah State School's second annual Bush Dance for Chappy was a really fun night. A great crowd of families and friends of the school enjoyed spinning and step-toeing to the lively ‘Bushland Boogie’ bush band. There were plenty of delicious burgers, snags, corn cobs and kebabs to satisfy all the hungry dancers; and lots of wonderful raffle and fancy dress prizes. Consequently, there were many very satisfied tummies and prize winners at the end of the night! Chappy Mark and his hard-working team did a fantastic job of organising and running the dance. The proceeds of the night help support the Mooloolah State School Chaplaincy Program, which provides support and inclusion for as many students as possible throughout the school term, and can provide special support for students who are experiencing problems at home, at school or in the community. The program relies in part on funds raised by the dedicated Chaplaincy Committee and generous sponsorship and donations by local businesses. The Chaplaincy Committee would again like to thank all the businesses who so generously supported our bush dance: Mooloolah Shearing Shed, Mooloolah Computers, Activant Earthworx, Vicious Vintage, Mooloolah Post Office, Mooloolah Hair Studio, Mooloolah BP, Mooloolah Produce, Glenview BP, Our Shoes, Mooloolah IGA, Mooloolah Veterinary Surgery, Mooloolah News, Mooloolah Dental Surgery, Red Building, Coastwide Computers, Linea Design & Drafting, Mooloolah Tiling, Matilda Fruit Barn, Mooloolah Pharmacy, Earth Bling Jewellery, North Qld Cowboys Rugby League Club and Beerwah Hotel.

The Newman Government has announced its plans to reduce green tape and put money back into the pockets of thousands of Queensland small businesses. We are deleting 20 environmentally relevant activity (ERA) thresholds, as part of our drive to reduce regulation and green tape by 20 per cent. I am pleased to announce that from March 31, more than 9,400 small business operators will no longer need to apply for a licence or pay an application fee, and no longer need to submit an annual return. This will be great news for many of our Glass House businesses. These changes represent the most significant reform to licensing processes in more than a decade and bring Queensland in line with other states. More information on the removal of ERA regulations is available at www. eph.qld.gov.au

CASH CONVERTERS
Seven Caloundra electorate sporting and recreation clubs have received more than $47,500 thanks to the first round of the Get Going component in the Newman Government’s $18 million grassroots funding program. The Glasshouse Hinterland Australian Football Club and the SuncoastHinterland Softball Association are part of the group who will share in $47,568 aimed at maintaining and boosting membership numbers through the purchase of new equipment and training activities. These clubs are the backbone of our local community and with this funding we’ll be getting more children and young people playing sport and involved in sport.
Red Tape Removed
Under new laws introduced to Parliament recently, schools and community groups will no longer require a Community Liquor Permit (CLP) for fundraising events. Schools and community groups host these events simply to raise money for their students or members and they shouldn’t be bogged down with unnecessary regulation. This also enables these groups to include alcohol as a prize in raffles under $100 without the need to apply for a permit.
Fix Our Schools Fund
Ten schools across the electorate will share in more than $1.5 million dollars as part of the State Government’s ‘Fixing Our Schools’ fund. $1,527,982 will be distributed to schools including Beerwah State High School, Beerwah State School, Glenview State School, Golden Beach State School, Landsborough State School and Mooloolah State School in a bid to ease maintenance backlogs over the next year. Thanks to that funding, schools will be able to revitalise structures and repair footpaths, replace carpet and repaint. www.gcnews.com.au

Windows 8
Your Digital Marketing Strategy
We covered this briefly when Windows 8 launched, but promised more when we had more experience….. Bought a new Desktop PC or Laptop lately and got it home to find you have Windows 8? If you like the new interface, great. Windows 8 does have benefits: it’s lighter on your computer, has loads of new features and looks quite cool. However, for those who don’t have a touch screen, and have been using Windows XP, Vista or Window 7 it can prove very frustrating! We know customers who bought Windows 7 to downgrade, just so they can “drive” their computer! There seems to be a few backward steps as far as useability is concerned. Setting up email can be a real nightmare - a simple solution is to install Windows Live Mail from the essentials download. There is a new backup system with Windows 8 which actually works quite well, however, for those who liked Windows 7 version; you can still find it nestled in the options. Probably most confusing for newcomers is the Microsoft Account: you don’t need this to use the computer; but if you want to download apps, including Skype, you need to create this account. Here are a few shortcuts which may help you navigate your way around Windows 8. The most useful tool when lost is the Windows Key at bottom left: pressing this will get you back to the home screen! For settings and shut down options, pressing the Windows Key plus the ‘i’key will get these options up. If you are stuck in an app, press Windows plus ‘D’, this will get you home. BEST TIP: For those with Windows 8 who would really like it to look like W7, there are third party downloads that can assist and we find that they work very well! Incidentally, to see why Australians pay world highest rates and about 50% more for our software than US, check out our Facebook blog (www.facebook.com/Mooloolah.Computers)
Lately I’ve been helping many business owners come to terms with the fact that websites, social media, e-marketing etc. are not just concepts floating randomly in cyberspace - they are legitimate and very worthwhile aspects of Digital Marketing – a phenomenon that should be at the forefront of the mind of every modern business owner! The term 'Digital Marketing' has come onto the scene in the last year or two and is an umbrella term for the vast array of electronic marketing and communications services that exist today. My focus when I work with business owners is to put in very simple terms the meaning, the benefits and (more importantly) the lead generation, conversion and sales potential of each facet of Digital Marketing. Put simply - I show people how and why they should be using software and the internet to increase profits. If I had to pick the four main points that really stand out in a discussion with a typical small to medium business when forming their Digital Marketing Strategy (DMS), they would be the following: 1. Clearly define your message, your logo and branding, and your business image in general. This will affect all other branches of your DMS. 2. Keyword research, inbound links and competitor analysis will get you where you want to go with Google. 3. On your website, blogs, social media and otherwise, strive to be an honest, accessible, knowledgeable authority on your area of expertise. 4. Your online presence should breed familiarity and comfort in your clients and make it easy for them to act.

Professional driver training the easy way
Landsborough Driver Training is about to celebrate their second successful year of professionally teaching local drivers how to drive safely and responsibly. Owners and operators, Ken and Susanne Steyn would like to thank all their customers over this time for their support. “Our aim is not only to prepare you to be a confident and knowledgeable driver, but to equip you with the skills, experience and good driving habits to last you a lifetime.” Servicing all areas in Glasshouse Country region, they have lessons to suit all learners looking to get their first licence, and are also happy to cater for those who already have their licence but would like their driving skills improved or their licence conditions changed. “Not only do we teach our students to use correct driving techniques, but we also encourage the ‘Supervisor’ (mother, father or friend) to come with them on the first lesson. It is helpful to see how the instructor deals with situations on the road and reminds them of some good driving habits they may have forgotten about.” By booking with Landsborough Driver Training, not only are you gaining professional tuition and the benefit of their years of experience, but you also get the benefit of earning three logbook hours for every one hour of accredited driving instruction. Ken’s Tip of the Week To Give-Way means to slow down or stop if necessary to avoid a collision and to wait your turn. There are many situations other than Give Way signs where you have to Give Way. These include: • At a Stop sign • Turning across the path of an oncoming car at an intersection • Turning from a terminating road onto the ongoing road at a T-intersection Remember – Stop and Give Way road markings have the same meaning as a Stop and Give Way sign (in case the sign is missing), and always Give-Way to pedestrians. The second person with the correct answer to the question below to email Landsborough Driver Training will receive a free one hour lesson as their birthday giveaway. Question - Who has right of way and why in this picture? To find out more about what they offer, take a look at their website www.ldt.net. au, where you can also book a driving lesson on-line. Or else email them at drive@ldt.net.au or call 0427 997 233. APRIL 10 2013 |

Council’s refusal to provide a school bus area for the intersection of Macdonalds Road and Bald Knob Road
Recently we requested a school bus stop area / shelter be established for the end of Macdonalds Road, which council’s traffic officer Rod declined due to no funding. The school bus has stopped here for many years and missed out when several years back some shelters were provided along the bus route. Currently there are no provisions at all for this bus stop. The children are forced into the high wet grass or to stand on the main road. This is not safe enough. When council approved the large family friendly estate on Macdonalds Road, would it not have been common sense to include a safe, suitable area in the infrastructure for all the new families? And where have all the road contributions and rates from the estate gotten to? Our children’s safety should be one of council’s priorities! Certainly more important than the construction of roads and gates occurring on the recently purchased 160 acres by council. This property receives better maintenance than Macdonalds Road. Back to the point – where there is a school bus stop, there must be a safe waiting area. Markus Peachester

Where I live in Beerwah we lost power for 60 hours. So no hot water for showering or washing dishes, I had no phone services for that time once the battery ran out. I had to buy take away food for that time and being a diabetic on insulin that was hard. I also had to throw my insulin and Byetta out as I didn’t know if it was still safe to use them, as well as all the food I had in my fridge / freezer. I also have sleep apnea and sleep with a CPAP which I couldn’t use without power. I got the $180.00 on offer, but it is very disappointing that the Sunshine Coast is not on the AGDRP even though it’s on the DIRS, I don’t understand that? I have made a Facebook page and sent a link to Peter Slipper and two other politicians. Join the group and write your story. http://www.facebook.com/?sk=welcome#!/ groups/549439901744969/ or look for Sunshine Coast AGDRP. Lisa Beerwah
Huge thanks
We would like to send a large thank you to the Beerwah Peachester Ladies Auxiliary who put in so much of their own time to sell and make beautiful items to raise monies. We can’t ever repay what you have done for Lachlan, and to all who purchased raffle tickets and made donations towards Lachlan’s equipment needs we thank you. We are now able to give Lachlan the chance for a more normal life with the aides we are purchasing. We could not have done this without everyone’s generosity so from all Lachlan’s family Thank You. Also a huge thank you to all who donated prizes you are all very special. Lachlan and the Thomas family 18

Privatisation of Sunshine Coast University hospital
One of Mr Sprigborg's main reasons for handing this new hospital into private hands is the ‘wastage’ of funds. He quotes a 43 per cent increase in funding only delivered a 17 per cent increase in services. What did he expect? 43 per cent increase in services? His economic understanding is somewhat warped if he reasons in such a simplistic way. Just consider the increased costs, huge increase in demand and do the sums again. There is absolutely no way that increasing funding by a certain percentage is going to result in corresponding percentage increase in services. Furthermore, his figures are somewhat inflated on the funding side and significantly deflated on the delivery side. His argument is designed to deceive the public. Once the hospital is privatised, the costs, whatever they may be, will be met by the patients and one of the major components of those costs will be a dividend (profit) for the company and its shareholders. Do not be blind-sided by his irrelevant argument. Jerry Valenta Landsborough
Are you getting what you pay for?
We signed with Telstra in 2012 as they offered 200Gig of download at ADSL2 speeds. At the time we were told only a limited number of ports were available for ADSL2. So we signed up and initially had reasonable speeds of between 5-6MBPS, and sometimes even faster. I regularly monitor my net speed with speedtest.net and noticed that towards the end of 2012 the speed of the service was dramatically reduced, sometimes to less than 0.7MBPS. I regularly recorded my speed over a two month period, which showed that the service that I was paying for was not being provided, namely ADSL2. I lodged a complaint with Telstra, and the poor speeds were verified by them. They notified me that I would be due for some compensation when the problem was fixed, which would be sometime in the future. After numerous conversations with Telstra I was not happy with their vague response, they would not give me any timeframe for fixing the problem. I then complained to the Telecommunications ombudsman via the internet complaint service, providing him with the proof of the poor service by enclosing copies of my speedtest.net results over two months. The ombudsman’s office took the complaint seriously and contacted Telstra and gave them a time period to resolve my complaint. After escalating the complaint and assigning a case manager etc, the cause was found to be congestion at the exchange, which would not be fixed until approximately June 2015 when an upgrade was due. However that is still dependant on the National Broadband Network. I had two choices presented to me for resolution: Discontinuation of the 24 month contract or compensation as they cannot provide the service they signed me up for. As options for internet service providers are very limited at Glass House, I chose the compensation
route and have been told that a decent amount will be credited to my account. I would suggest that if you are receiving poor service from Telstra through the Glass House exchange with ADSL2 that you follow the above procedure. Telstra is certainly not delivering the ADSL2 service locally, if you are paying for it, and not receiving it you are due compensation. I wonder how quickly the Glasshouse exchange would be upgraded if everyone having the same problems locally with Telstra had to be compensated? A tip for your negotiations - don’t settle with Telstra immediately after the Ombudsman has contacted them, they have a limited time frame to settle the problem and will offer you more compensation closer to the end of the time period of settlement. Keep in mind you need to be able to prove the service is not up to the claimed ADSL2 speeds, and you need to have lodged your complaint with Telstra and have a complaint referral number. Gambling good for sport
A Senate review into the facts behind the Waterhouse/NRL/Channel 9 betting link is to take place soon....thank god! How on earth can these NRL/Channel 9 moguls say that this affiliation with gambling is good for the sport. Ok, so we know it is all about money and the fact is that Waterhouse reaps a huge profit as well as the TV channels and the NRL executive. Sadly, the poor punter who enjoys watching his sport is the one who is targetted and as we all know the only winner in gambling is the bookmaker. So in effect, the punter is the one funding this ‘reputed’ $50 million deal. Tobacco companies were removed from sports sponsorship and public advertising. Yet we still have alcohol and gambling front and centre. Smokers largely only affect themselves, but gambling affects the entire family and alcohol can lead to drink driving and road accidents. Where is the logic? We hear of drug involvement in sport and betting irregularities all the time. Isn't it time we sport lovers took back the games we love from the greedy and corrupt. I had thought that this letter would have been well served in a State or National press but I am sure that ‘vested interests’ would ensure nonpublication. Isn't it great that we have still got freedom of expression here in our little corner of the world. James Aitken Mooloolah Valley

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Pastor Rodney Jobe Church on the Rise I read a quote from Dale Winbrow: ‘When you get what you want in the struggle for self, and the world makes you king for a day; just go to the mirror and look at yourself, and see what that man has to say. For it isn't your father or mother or wife, who’s judgement upon you must pass; the fellow whose verdict counts most in your life, is the one staring back from the glass. He's the fellow to please never mind all the rest, for he's with you clear to the end. And you've past your most dangerous difficult test, if the man in the glass is your friend. and get pats on the back as you pass. But your final reward will be heartache and tears, if you've cheated the man in the glass.’ As I reflect on this quote I'd say after reading it again… There’s two in the glass looking back at me...Jesus and me... He is really the one I need to please... then I can smile at the mirror and the one who is looking back at me.

After a health scare last year, Beth Cheney from Aranisari decided to start stocking a range of organic teas, coconut oil, ear candles and other well-known health products. One of her biggest sellers is Percy’s Powder®, Percy's is a blood tonic and helps maintain normal blood. Why take it? Because modern diets, while containing the following minerals, do not have enough of them to balance the abundant acid minerals coming from the soils conditioned by chemical fertilisers and processed additives. Percy’s mineral salts are sulphates (unlike most others), which disinfect the blood, resist bacteria, and detoxifiy. Find out more about them at www.innerglow.com.au Each sachet contains: magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc and manganese. A daily dose costs 78 cents. Please feel free to drop in and ask for a sample. Beth is also more than happy to source any other product requests. Aranisari is located at 3 Beerburrum Road, Beerburrum (next to the Post Office) and is open 9.00am to 4.00pm Tuesday to Friday and 9.00am to 1.00pm Saturdays. Phone 5496 0001.

Living Music Today
with Dr Micheal Whiticker
Micheal lives at Glass House Mountains and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner
The mentors in our life Most of us can look back at our lives and pick out those moments when important people came into it. As a 13-year-old I had an English and drama teacher who espied in me some semblance of talent and encouraged me into the thespian pursuits. I am not sure that he felt his efforts bore fruit however, as some years later, (I was by then at a different school) he came to see me in a production of West Side Story, and afterwards, when I told him that I was considering theatre as a career, suggested instead that I look to football as more sensible. I am sure it might have been that he was disillusioned with the life artist’s lead in this country, but I didn’t heed his advice and although I possibly had the talent, didn’t have the drive to pursue a career in football. Interestingly it had been another inspired individual - our ‘first fifteen’ coach, who had told us all we had to miss football practice one day to audition for West Side Story. It may have been he was confident hulking young 16 and 17 year olds were perfect for the Jets and Sharks, or it might just have been that he knew he was one of the few people who could entice us tough young blokes into trying the arts - not the done thing for ‘footie’ types in those days. So it was that I got the part of Riff - leader of the Jets, and discovered I had a passable singing voice. I have had many fine mentors over the years, especially during my formative years at university, but it was that drama teacher who was the first of many impressive people who have graced me with their time. The passing on of knowledge, using the wisdom that we have gleaned from our own life experience, is a role we are all assigned. It may be that many of our efforts fall on deaf ears, but then we’ll never know what we might be seeding. Spare a thought for the important people you’ve had in your life, and determine that when the occasion arises you too will pass on something that might just be the right thing at the right time for the right person. Have a wonderful, creative month!

Joyce and Fred celebrate Golden Wedding Recently local couple Joyce and Fred Car celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on a trip away to Norfolk Island, which they thought was a great place to visit. The couple were made to feel really special, receiving best wishes and cards from many people as well as flowers and gifts from the great staff and residents at Embracia in Glasshouse Country where they are volunteers. Fred and Joyce find volunteering at Embracia a very self satisfying and rewarding experience, they said they feel as though they’re treated like family. They would like to thank everyone who has helped them celebrate their 50 years together. www.gcnews.com.au
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network The membership of the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) includes people with a variety of talents. One of these is Ivon Northage, a long standing member of GMAN who has a number of interests, many of which compliment the environmental ideals which GMAN stands for. We hope the readers enjoy the following contribution by Ivon.
The origins of the Glass House Mountains names
On May 17, 1770, Lieutenant (later Captain) James Cook named this region the ‘Glass Houses’ because of their similarity (to him) of the glass kilns or furnaces in his native Yorkshire in England. The ‘Mountains’ part of our name was later added by a draftsman, presumably when compiling maps; hence the combining of the two names became the Glass House Mountains. While this is a story widely known by most of us, the origin of names of the individual mountains may not be so familiar. In researching the names, a number of contradictions were evident, especially in the aboriginal tribes mentioned or their dialect. To overcome this, the most common references were included. There may also be some argument on the mountains included. The mountains are listed in order of height as specified on the Topographic Map 9444-22 Edition 2. 1. Mount Beerwah – 556 metres. From Turrbal dialect, named Birra-Wandum or Birrawaman. Birra meaning Sky and Wandum meaning Climbing Up. Often also called Bira-Wa meaning up in the Sky. 2. Mount Coonowrin – 377 metres. Undambi dialect. Called Kunna Waruin – Kunna meaning Nape of Neck and Waruin meaning Crooked. 3. Mount Tibrogargan – 364 metres. Undambi dialect. Called Chibur – Kakun. Chibur meaning Flying Squirrel and Kakun meaning Biting. 4. Mount Tunbubudla (East) – 338 metres. Undambi dialect. From Tunba – Bulla Bulla. Tunba meaning Mountains and Bulla Bulla meaning Two; sometimes pronounced Toomboona-boolah. 5. Mount Tunbubudla (West) – 294 metres. Meaning as 4 above. 6. Mount Beerburrum – 278 metres. Undambi dialect. Called Bir-barram meaning Sound of the Wings of the King Parrot or the Bair (parrot). 7. Mount Ngungun – 253 metres. Undambi dialect. Called Nguin-Nguin meaning Dark or Black. 8. Mount Coochin (West) – 235 metres and (East) 230 metres. Undambi dialect. Derived from aboriginal word Kutchen meaning Red Ochre or Red Soil. Even thought there are two peaks the mountains have a common base. 9. Mount Tibberoowuccum – 220 metres. Turrbal dialect. Called Chibur Waiaragum, Bhibur meaning Flying Squirrel and Waiaragum meaning Hungry. 10. Mount Miketebumulgrai – 202 metres. Macquarie River District dialect derived from aboriginal word Micketeebuomumlgrial meaning ‘a place where lightning has struck’: Mikatee – lightning and Buomul – to strike. 11. Mount Cooee (Barrs Hill) – 177 metres. Coo-ee was a call that aborigines used to summon other people, meaning ‘come to me’. The call was adopted by white settlers to call for help when lost in the bush. No reference was found as to why the name Cooee was given to this mountain. 12. Wild Horse Mountain – 123 metres. No aboriginal origin found. Named after wild brumbies that used to roam in the area. 13. Mount Elimbah (Saddleback) – 109 metres. Undambi dialect. Derived from Elimbah Creek which was called ‘Yilam’ meaning Grey Snake. 14. Round Mountain – 97 metres. No reference found to date. Note: Undambi is recorded as the Maroochy dialect of the Kabi people. References: 1. Aboriginal Pathways in S/E Qld and the Richmond River. J. G. Steele 2. Place Names of Australia. A. W. Reed 3. Bringing back the Birdwing Butterflies
GMAN members recently took advantage of the pleasant autumn weather to plant mature Birdwing butterfly (Pararistolochia praevenosa) vines, in some of our lovely natural bushland areas. Twenty vines were added to those already planted in the Coonowrin Creek camping ground. Birdwing larvae have previously been found on these vines making this an ideal location. On another lovely damp morning one of the ‘best kept secret’ areas of Glass House, was the venue for planting another 20 vines. Glass House Park estate has a large Photo supplied by Virginia Moffatt creek line picnic ground ideal for growing hundreds of vines. Watch for a public working bee to follow up these plantings! A check was also made on vines planted four years ago in Smerdon Way. To our delight, we found glossy green foliage disappearing into the tree tops and lots of lovely yellow fruit. While some fruit can be sourced for seed the remainder will be left for natural dispersal by possums and brush turkeys. For further information or to purchase vines, please contact Gwen on 5493 0029.

Five favourite fruits!
Recently I was asked if I only could have one fruit tree, what would it be? The thought of being limited to just one was a challenge to me! I couldn’t do it…simply because I could think of no justifiable reason why I would only want just one tree. So, after all of this I decided to come up with my personal top five fruits and berries for our local area and some tips to growing them organically.
Bananas
They are easy to grow and with little maintenance you get an abundance of fruit. There is also the added benefit that you get new plants as the suckers emerge. Plant time: The best time to plant banana suckers is between September and December. Location: Sunny position in well-drained soil. Prep: Dig in compost, manure and crusher dust. Maintenance: A large cup of poultry based manure around the base each month and keep well watered.
Strawberries
They crop over a long period, are tasty organic delights and can be done on a small or large scale. Once again, there is the benefit of getting a continuous supply of new plants from the runners. Plant time: Autumn … ie, now! Location: Sunny position in rich moist soil. Prep: Dig in lots of mushroom compost and blood and bone. Maintenance: Sprinkle some dynamic lifter around at flowering and water around the plant without wetting the leaves and fruit. Mulch well.
Passionfruit
Passionfruit vines are attractive lush vines that grow quickly and produce masses of fruit. Plant time: Anytime. Location: Sunny location protected from wind and frosts. Prep: A sturdy trellis is required and plenty of organic matter added before planting. Maintenance: Heavy nitrogen feeders, so regular blood and bone feeds. Also frequent watering to keep shallow roots moist.
Mandarin
Great prolific fruiters with vitamin rich fruit for kids to eat straight from the tree. Plant time: Ideally just prior to Spring, but anytime with care. Location: Sunny location with good air circulation and drainage. Prep: Well dug area, loads of organic matter. Maintenance: Regular water, feeding and mulching. Fertilise three times a year.

The good old Choko vine is as Australian as the meat pie, and I think should be a standard fence-covering vine in every backyard! Great taste, easy to grow, never fails. Plant time: Anytime! Location: Any sunny fence line, chook pen or other structure. Prep: You can just stick one in the ground and it will grow, but a little compost and manure is beneficial. Maintenance: If you remember to water it, I’m sure it will appreciate it, but even that seems unnecessary! So that is my five favourite fruits. This time last year I wrote, “There are so many more wonderful fruits out there to grow and ultimately I would love the challenge of growing them all, but space does become an issue at some point….I need more land!” Well I now have more land…so the challenge begins! Until next time in Get Up and Grow!

Home loan hints and tricks When it comes to home loans it can seem like everybody has advice that you absolutely must follow. It’s hard to know who to believe sometimes! That’s because everyone has a different experience with home finance. Each home buyer has their own needs and circumstances, so there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution. However, there are some pieces of advice that have stood the test of time and can be quite helpful for those seeking to arrange and manage their home finance. Clever deposit saving trick If you aren’t sure whether you have www.gcnews.com.au
the financial discipline to manage monthly home loan repayments, a great way to test yourself out is by treating your deposit like a mortgage. Instead of searching for savings in piecemeal fashion here and there, commit to a methodical once a month savings deposit into a high interest account and act as if this were a home loan repayment – i.e. non-negotiable. Making it imperative to put this money aside as a great way of enforcing discipline upon yourself and training for your future mortgage. Be prepared to act quickly When you find the house, apartment
or unit of your dreams, the last thing you want is a delay in getting your finance arranged preventing you from getting it. Getting your home loan pre-approved is an excellent way to make sure that this doesn’t happen. Rather than losing out to better-prepared fellow home buyers, you’ll be the one ready to act when the time is right. Pre-approval is also helpful because it lets you know exactly how much money you have to work with when shopping for a property. Regularly review your loan One thing that all home owners

would benefit from is a regular review of their mortgage finance. Times change and so do your own circumstances, so it is good to have a fresh look at your loan once a year to make sure it is still working for you. If it isn’t, home loan refinancing may be a good option to get back on the right track. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Does your agent know what they are doing? Thorough and accurate property inspections are key to managing property properly and professionally whether it is Residential or Commercial Property. What to report on and when to report it? Does your Property Manager thoroughly assess inside and outside the property? Do they check for areas for leakages or dampness on walls adjoining wet areas, inside cupboards (especially under kitchen sinks and inside cupboards adjoining showers or bathrooms). Are they looking at all outside areas, cracks to driveways/hardstand areas, guttering, downpipes and walls?

The girls managed to avoid the rain on Thursday to play our Monthly Medal for trophies donated by our Pro, John Mellish. John wasn't able to be in the clubhouse for presentation, so Captain Lea did the honours. The Monthly Medal is a Stroke event, played in three divisions and the winner of Division 1, with a Nett score of 75 was Andrea Campbell. Runner up was Jen Kelly with a 77 Nett. The Best Gross in Div 1 went to Sonia Kenway who came in with 90 off the stick. Division 2 was won by Barb Drury with a 75 Nett followed by Ruth Bowie on 77 Nett. Barb also won the putting today with 27 putts. Best Gross in Div 2 went to Gail Gundry with 100 off the stick. Division 3 winner was Rosemary Collins with a 75 Nett, followed by Joan Swyny on 80 Nett. Best Gross in Div 3 went to Margaret Williams with 112 off the stick. NTP's went to Cindy Godfrey on 2 and 16, Cathy Stone on 5 and Ruth Bowie on the 18th. Sue Williamson won the lucky card draw. The ball rundown went to 82. As you can see by the scores, the course is still a bit damp and playing pretty long with very little run. Having said that, the course is looking great and set up beautifully for the coming months. Hope to see out there, until then, stay safe and good golfing.

Landsborough Loggers come out on top Contributed by Stephen Hocking, Club President
After finishing as the Minor Premiers, and overcoming situations such as being 7/12, making 56 and having Noosa 5/47 in reply during their semi final, the Landsborough C Grade side ventured to Caloundra for their Grand Final against Stanley Rivers. Losing the toss and batting, they slumped to 5/41 before Matthew Norton (40) and Brett Pratt (32 off 9 balls) hoisted them to 150. Kris Minns (3/14 off 8) and Brett Pratt (4/34 off 9) proved to be the destroyers with the ball as they kept Stanley Rivers to 90. In the second innings, the Loggers wobbled to 7/64 before captain Nathan Schulze (34) and Alex Jeffrey (28) put on 52 for the 8th wicket and steered them to 139. Defending 200, Matthew Norton produced two devastating spells of bowling to take 5/14 off 8 overs, and decimate Stanley Rivers, leaving them to limp to 143, and giving the Loggers the premiership! All of this was made possible by the support the club received from their sponsors, Holcim, Ecospill, Big Kart Track, Wamuran Timbers, Landsborough Barber and J&T Livestock.

such yummy tea, my mum came home. My dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was just the cutest thing! My mum waited and, sure enough, I came down the hall with a cup of tea for daddy. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This will be one of your best weeks, as the new Moon turns on the spotlight, revving up your magnetic charisma. So be confident, positive and make good use of the week for increased personal influence. It may be the best time to set your intentions for the year. Take the initiative. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This is going to be one of your better weeks as the new Moon, just prior to the weekend, in Aries sign, inspires you to start the day believing that all things will go your way. Your indulgence may centre around wanting more, and spending more. Treat someone you like out to lunch. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 The Aries new Moon calls attention to your friends and social groups in the coming weeks. This is a wonderful time to get some exciting fresh developments and new introductions. A good chance to get ahead and further your personal agenda, albeit your natural charm at this time. CANCER June 22 – July 22 The new Moon makes you assertive and adventurous in pioneering new professional or career matters. The pace speeds up as Venus and Mars heat up the action in your professional sector. You will act with impulse and enthusiasm showing your leadership and confidence now.
LEO July 23 – August 22 New Moons begin a new cycle, and as this one is by the weekend in the sign of Aries, restlessness provides motivation to find new meanings and goals for your life. The Aries sector of this new Moon means self reliance is essential in taking care of all your business responsibilities. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The Aries new Moon tests out whether to reveal your emotions, or hold them back. You may feel vulnerable if you reveal private feelings. This is because the communication planet, Mercury, your ruler, is squelched by the lead weight of Saturn. So answers are hard to come by. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 What a week this will turn out to be, with the new Moon in your opposite sign of Aries, turning the spotlight on your relationships. This is the time to cooperate with your partner or tell them you will be leaving and not coming back. The reason is you need a temporary change. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 There is to be a zestful playfulness with you this week, as the new Moon in Aries is escorted by the cosmic lovers of the heavens. This adds ardent charm to your workfront contacts. Perhaps work harder for your desires. Head towards an unusual health and wellbeing regime.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This may be one of your best weeks ever, with the Aries new Moon coinciding with a bout of spring fever. This can breathe new life into a relationship. Your own inner child will set off the weekend in a flurry of a rose coloured outlook. New chances to show off your talents now. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The challenge this weekend is perhaps the break in your professional spell you are usually under, and bring more attention to your living conditions and family matters. As the musical says ‘you need a spoonful of honey’ this weekend to combine spontaneity with relationships. AQUARIUS January 20 – February19 The enterprising Aries new Moon, talks up your whole weekend with cosmic lovers in sparkling, seductive embrace. Why not dash into a fun-filled local project, art galleries adventure or friendly encounters. Also it’s highlighting your calendar with involvement with close relatives. PISCES February 20 – March 20 This new Moon weekend says to manage your resources with assertive visions to generate more income. Give your body the walking exercise it needs and fit that in by the beach or lakeside. Venus and lively Mars are the celestial signatures for comfort and pleasure. Take a risk now.
