Hi Everyone Well until first thing on Monday morning I had the feeling that there isn’t anyone in Glasshouse Country with an opinion they wanted to express, well none that they wanted to write about, for the second time lately we got to deadline and NO LETTERS!! I am not sure if all the regular letter writers went into overdrive before the election and now they are sitting back giving the new State and Local Governments time to get everything right, before they start pointing out what isn’t working in our community. I know in the past we have been accused of not printing letters and I have assured readers that as long as the contributions fall within our guidelines then they get a run, so before any rumours start; there is no hold on letters. I just want to set the record straight – we received just the one late letter
this week – which sadly is about vandalism at Skippy Park, which we have printed. And to try to get people letting the rest of us know what they think, we have called on Facebook to get the ball rolling on the topic of the Carbon Tax. If anything should get people talking I figure that will - so why not put pen to paper or in our electronic world fingers on your keyboard and share your views on what you think about the Carbon Tax and how you think it will impact on your family! Send your letters to letters@gcnews.com.au Regards,

While last week’s news of new funding for local Chaplaincy services was welcome news for members of the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy committee, they are keeping their eye on the ball. Namely a golf ball, as they prepare for their biggest annual fundraiser, the IGA Chaplaincy Golf Classic at Beerwah Golf Club this Sunday, July 15. Long serving committee Members of the local Chaplaincy Committee pictured with Beerwah State High member Chris Bell said 2012 'chappy' Mike Turner, third from left had so far been a very exciting year for the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy Committee. One member of the committee, Pam Innes, has been hard at work fundraising for all that time, while many others have made contributions by organising fundraising concerts, Deb balls, golf days, motorbike rides and other events. Chairman of the Chaplaincy Committee Glenda McSwain said the committee was thrilled by the recent news of some funding from the government, but their work was far from over. “Mammoth fundraising efforts will still be required to continue to maintain Chaplaincy services at our local schools,” she said. A tale of two ballerinas She has the style and grace of a ballerina, so it’s not surprising to learn that Peachester’s Lyn Dickson is a top level dressage competitor of international standing. It’s also not surprising to note that dressage, considered the highest expression of horse training, is also commonly referred to as horse ballet. The mobile dressage coach, who has been training, coaching and competing with horses all her life, is about to head off to the Brisbane CDI later this month with her mare, Apptrak Toska, where they will compete with international level dressage riders from across the country. At 61-years-of-age, and one of the older competitors who will be participating in the event, Lyn is well aware of the need to be in peak condition for the sport, which requires intense athleticism of both rider and horse. She and Apptrak Toska, who have forged a unique partnership over the past nine years, train together for 40 minutes every day. Lyn also trains on her own, concentrating on her core strength, which is imperative for the highly skilled and technical movements she will lead Apptrak Toska through. But the seasoned competitor remains philosophical about the outcome of the event. “We don’t compete to win, it’s more for the enjoyment of the competition,” Lyn said.
For the uninitiated, the age old sport, which this year celebrates its 100th year as an Olympic sport, puts on an impressive show. The brief performance of the horse and rider, which lasts between seven and eight minutes, belies the countless hours of training and preparation that produce a top level combination of style, grace, timing and technique that Lyn and Apptrak Toska have been perfecting over the years. “I see competing in dressage as like having dessert,” Lyn said. Lyn with her mare Apptrak Toska, in full competition attire “At my age, I’ve got no aspirations to be a world record beater, it’s more about enjoying this stage “As a coach and trainer, I get just as much joy of my life, and indulging in my passion with my seeing my students perform well as I get from best friend,” Lyn said. competing. And when she’s not on the FEI (Federation "It’s all about living a happy and balanced life, Equestre Internationale) dressage competition and I am pleased to say that is exactly what I circuit, Lyn is a Level 2 dressage specialist am doing,” she said. coach, coach educator. For more information, visit Lyn’s website at “I fell in love with horses at the age of four, and www.lyndickson.com.au have been involved with equestrian sport all my life,” she said.

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has praised Sunshine Coast Council for reviewing and agreeing to address safety issues surrounding a lack of kerb and channelling at 44 Caloundra Street, Landsborough. In a letter to residents last month, Council has indicated it will install 30 metres of kerb and channelling and one car park at the front of the Caloundra Street housing complex in coming weeks. Moira Dowden, who has lived at the housing complex for the past two years, said it was good news for the residents. She said residents had been complaining about the steep gutter and lack of parking for visitors for the past 18 months.

“Our main concern was not being able to safely put out our bins, because of the steep gutter and the risk of getting struck by passing traffic. The other issue was a lack of parking facilities for visitors, so we are hoping that the new kerb and channelling will address both of these issues,” she said. “This is good news, but we will believe it when it happens,” she said. Cr Rick Baberowski said, "it was a classic example of an issue falling between two levels of government. Each can argue a reasonable case that the other should cover the cost,” he said. “But it doesn't make sense to half fix the problem, so I have asked that the drainage works and kerb and guttering cover the full road frontage of 44 Caloundra Road. This will provide greater capacity for roadside car parking and safer waste collection. “I will ask the state to contribute to the cost, but the residents have waited long enough,” he said. The State Government housing complex was first built in 2008 and the Department of Transport and Main Roads have confirmed Caloundra Street, Landsborough, is a Sunshine Coast Council road, and therefore any upgrades are council’s responsibility.
Welcome donation for embattled brigade Lou also put out another plea for more volunteers. Following a second burglary last month, finally the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade has something to “We’re about to head into a recruitment drive, smile about, with the donation of $5,000 worth and would love to see some new volunteers come of equipment from Energex last week. on board,” he said. The presentation at Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade last week was attended by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Commissioner Lee Johnson, and Energex CEO Terry Effeney. The Beerwah Brigade’s first officer Lou Spann said it was a real honour to receive the new equipment, which couldn’t have come at a better time. “We are expecting a robust bushfire season, and coupled Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Commissioner Neil Gallant, Energex with our recent losses, we are Asset Manager for the north coast region Steve Lynch, Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade first extremely grateful for the new officer Lou Spann, Energex CEO Terry Effeney, and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service equipment,” Lou said. A very special group of Indigenous women recently graduated from the first Backyard Bites program held at the Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business. Sunshine Coast TAFE Indigenous Support Tutor Ms Kryvoviaza said the Institute delivered this program in conjunction with renowned Indigenous chef Dale Chapman to teach bush tucker horticulture, art and cooking to Indigenous students with a strong cultural theme woven into all learning. “We chose to hold Backyard Bites at Nungeena, located at the base of Mt Beerwah, because it is considered by Indigenous people as a very sacred place,” Ms Kryvoviaza said. “Our students were also very fortunate to have Aunty Val, a respected Indigenous community member and member of the Nungeena Board, as part of this course.” Aunty Val Didsman said it was important for Nungeena to be overseen by Aboriginal women who would safeguard the heritage of the area. “Nungeena, the name of the mountain, means Mother which comes from Nungeena Tya meaning Mother Earth,” Ms Didsman said. “She is the mother of all the mountains and Tibrogargan is the father with all the smaller mountains the babies. “This is a sacred birthing place which was nearly lost but some of the Nungeena Corporation’s original members went to Canberra to fight for the money to buy the property and it was purchased in the early nineties. “This mountain is very sacred, it’s such a calming place that Aboriginal people didn’t ever climb because she is pregnant – this is one of the dreaming stories. “I’ve seen this mountain really happy, she loves to hear the laughter of women and children and Backyard Bites brought a lot of laughter to the mountain.” Nungeena Backyard Bites 2012 graduate Kelly Zeunert said she valued the knowledge and wisdom shared throughout the program. “Being at Nungeena with the women and Mother Mountain in that setting helped enormously with the work itself and the flow of being creative,” Ms Zeunert said.

Sunshine Coast TAFE Backyard Bites graduates Kelly Zeunert (L) and Beau McKnight (R) with Aunty Val at Nungeena “The co-ordinators of this course have put together a program that’s really at a grass roots level that was very creative-based with not too much academic pressure.” Both Kelly and fellow Backyard Bites graduate Beau McKnight are planning on enrolling in the new Caring for Our Mob Certificate III in Community Services to be offered by the TAFE in second semester. “Caring for our Mob will be pretty exciting,” Ms McKnight said. “I’m pretty intrigued and really looking forward to the work placement that will be part of the program. “Backyard Bites provided the perfect opportunity to reconnect with that part of me with other fair Indigenous people and was a reminder about what’s really important to me, who I am, not just being a mother of five.” Kelly agreed saying that her core belief to be of service to the community and help empower people is why she wants to enrol in Caring for our Mob. “I’ve had experience with youth and the elderly and I would ultimately like to work in remote communities.” For further information on programs available through Sunshine Coast TAFE, please call our Customer Contact Centre on 5457 1000 or visit sunshinecoast.tafe.qld.gov.au

From the Schools A closer look at Unity College Contributed by Rudy Goosem, principal
Unity College is an Ecumenical school embracing the Catholic and Uniting Churches' traditions. Classes are offered from Prep – Year 6 in the junior phase, 7 - 9 in the middle phase and Year 10 - 12 in the senior phase. Construction of stages one, two and three are now complete and have provided us with an excellent College which is well resourced and designed in such a way as to maximise the educational opportunities for the young people in our care. A large assembly hall has been constructed via BER funding from the National Government. Stage four was completed for the start of 2012. Staff at Unity are selected from a very large number of applicants and have proven to be excellent. Unity is a welcoming College which provides a comprehensive educational experience, allowing students to strive for excellence in all facets of the curriculum, academic, cultural, sporting and spiritual, in a well resourced and modern setting. Our behaviour management is based on the concept of respect. That is respect of oneself, respect for others and respect for the environment. The school is built on 11 hectares of land at Bellvista Estate and is a master planned College. Unity College has the backing and resource base of Brisbane Catholic Education and the productive working partnership with the Uniting Church has proven to be a very positive experience. I invite you to visit the College and talk to us about enrolling your child.
The preschool adventure to Embracia Recently some of the young and eager pre-schoolers from Goodstart Early Learning centre at Glass House Mountains took a creative excursion to the Embracia Nursing Home in Beerwah. The preschoolers were excited at the prospect of going out on the bus – and happily made the most of their singing voices on the way. There were a number of highlights during their visit including meeting the residents, as well as taking a look at the chickens and birds that live in the outdoor area. Everyone had the chance to express their artistic talents on the day with both the residents and the children engaging in some painting.
The preschoolers took turns in creating two beautiful string paintings which they happily presented to their hosts before they returned to the centre.

What is Network Attached Storage (NAS)? You might already know that you can connect a USB flash drive or external hard drive to your computer and use it for extra data storage space. You might use it as a backup copy of your data – or just an ‘overflow’ area for all the extra stuff that wont fit on your computer. However, depending on your needs, a NAS device might be a better option. External hard drives or USB flash drives/sticks are easy and convenient ways of creating additional storage via the USB port on your computer. However, these devices are restricted to being used only on the computer they are plugged in to. What happens if you need to share files? The answer lies within a NAS device! Instead of connecting directly to a computer, a NAS device connects to your modem/router. This allows multiple users from different computers to access the data stored on it. If you have a NAS device setup in your home or office, you can quickly and simply store and share your music, movies, images, documents and more from the one location. If you have other compatible devices, you can also stream digital media to things like your TV – either wired or wirelessly. Need to access your files remotely? Some NAS devices will let you access your data from anywhere in the world – as long as there is a decent internet connection on both sides. Backing up multiple computers? This is the gadget for you! Forget using multiple external hard drives. Back all your machines up to the one place. Used in conjunction with software like Acronis True Image – it is a VERY effective backup solution. Because your data is shared across the multiple hard drives within the NAS it is very safe. For more information checkout the blog on our website!

The game has changed (continued) We last spoke about Google’s recent decision to ignore the 'keywords' metadata tag that sits behind the scenes on your web pages and provides search engines with a list of words which indicate the likely content of each page. Unfortunately Google saw that people were misusing this functionality and have since made the decision not to pay attention to it. Even if you have spent countless hours trying to get just the right keywords behind each page, please don’t despair... just grab those keyword lists and start making sure that you use each of them in the content of your web pages themselves. For example, if my local balloon business was called 'Sunshine Coast Purple Balloons' then there’s a good chance that my keywords would be: sunshine coast, purple, balloons, helium, beerwah, glass house mountains, parties If this was the case then I should ensure that these same keywords are now used in wellwritten sentences in the publically visible text of my site. For example: Welcome to Sunshine Coast Purple Balloons - the Coast’s premier balloon hire business, catering for parties from Beerwah to Glass House Mountains. Of course, I imagine your area of business would be larger than that, but this gives you an idea of what to do with your keyword lists now that they’ve been made Google-redundant. Whatever you do, please don’t go and remove your keyword lists from your website! Sure, they aren’t important to Google any more but there are many other search engines and online directories which would almost certainly still be using your behind-the-scenes data as they always were.

Welcome to the new financial year – I know our members are keen for it to be a year that sees an improved local economy with growth across the board. While the Chamber of Commerce cannot guarantee that this will happen, I believe it is important for us to work together to continue to grow a strong collective voice. We need to be able to use our strength in numbers to help bring about positive change locally. So if you have been sitting on the sidelines thinking that maybe you should get involved, now is the time – with membership payments due this month – get your money’s worth and join in July! Also as part of your membership fees, you will be entitled to receive two free 5cm employment ads to run in Glasshouse Country News in 2012/2013, which should come in handy as the economy picks up. This year we are also looking at expanding the range of ways we promote the Chamber and our members – as well as moving forward on a number of projects we have been working on throughout the year. At last month’s networking meeting we formally acknowledged the great contribution made by many local community groups in bringing us the Sustainability Garden Expo and I would like to thank Community Recycling, SES, Scouts, Menshed, and the musical talent Rhialle Seric a Super

Anyone who has driven down Simpson Street in Beerwah in the last few weeks will have noticed that there is one business that is looking a whole lot ‘Betta’. Yes Retravision have recently had a name change and along with that, a dramatic colour change to the outside of their premises. They are now a Betta Electrical Home Living store and regular customers who have been in to check out the changes have been relieved to see the same friendly and attentive staff. However one change that customers are going to love in the next few months is the expanded product range. Beerwah Meats, located in the Beerwah Market Place next door to SMS Surf & Skate, are now stocking a wide range of free-range beef, lamb and pork and also certified organic chicken and beef. Jeremi is very proud to supply you with only Australian pork, which can be a rarity these days. Call in to see their excellent range of meat, including duck, duck breast, whole rabbits and kangaroo. He also has a great range of ready prepared schnitzels, rissoles, and stir fries which make getting dinner ready just that little bit easier. Make sure you also pick up some of their award winning sausages. Jenny the new Deli Manager from Mooloolah IGA has been listening to her customers and making sure the stock that they carry reflects the diverse needs of locals. The increased focus and conscious choices people are making about what they eat has seen a dramatic change in what people like to purchase in their shopping each week. This has meant the Deli has dramatically increased the range of Gluten Free and organic products that they carry – and by locating them in the one area it has made it so much easier for their shoppers. Check out the display at Mooloolah IGA – 4 Jones Street, Mooloolah. Hinterland Body & Soul are offering a delicious 90 minute Hot Stone Massage, for the special price in July of just $95.00. In our Health Check last week we wrote about the great range of products from Beerwah Health Foods that can be purchased in store or on line from their website www.beerwahhealthfoods.com.au, and yes this is the correct website address – somehow a gremlin got into our system and an unrelated email address appeared in our write up. The website is really comprehensive and has a ‘news’ section for regular updates, so check out the website for specials and information on all their products. Or if you'd rather the personal approach, drop in at Shop 2, 68 Simpson Street, Beerwah to see how Keith can help you.

Travelling Tales with Brian Aitken Without a doubt, Beerwah resident Brian Aitken would have to be one of our most seasoned travellers. Since 2003, this intrepid traveller has been all around the world, most recently stopping in at The Balkans, Scandinavia and Russia. According to Brian, his next ports of call will be Japan, Taiwan and Korea, but in the meantime, we were lucky enough to share some of the highlights of his recent trip, during which he managed to find time to send a postcard or two to the GCNews office. Where did you go? The Balkans (travelling from Vienna, Dubrovnik, Zagreb and Budapest), Scandinavia and Russia. When I travel, I always book all my travel through a travel agent; I never leave anything to chance. How long did you travel for? I left Australia on Mother’s Day and went for six weeks. What were some of the highlights? Croatia and Scandinavia were absolutely beautiful. While in Moscow, I went to the Red Square, and I was quite surprised by how small it actually is. On television, it looks much bigger, it’s actually only the size of about three football fields. I was also surprised by the Kremlin; there wasn’t as much security as I thought there would be. If you stepped over the line, they blew a whistle. Another highlight was the Moscow trip, where I was fortunate enough to have a one-on-one tour. The only problem was the tour guide couldn’t speak English, so our driver had to translate everything. While I was in Scandinavia, it was their annual summer festival, and there were maypoles everywhere. It was daylight until 10.30pm at night, and then the sun was up again at 5.00am in the morning!

Surprisingly, Glasshouse pioneers William and Mary Grigor of Bankfoot House are buried in historic Nundah Cemetery in Brisbane, even though they had lived for more than 30 years in Glasshouse. William and Mary established Bankfoot House in 1868 as a Cobb and Co lunch stop on the road between Brisbane and Gympie. There they lived the rest of their lives until they died in 1907 and 1900 respectively. Great grandson 85-year-old Bill Ferris, who himself lives in Nundah, is uncertain of the reason why both his great grandparents were buried in Nundah, although one possibility is that Mary’s mother, Janet Fenwick, had already been buried there. Recently Bill showed Friends of Bankfoot House members, Ron and Robyn Gillinder and his cousin Ethel Burgess, the precise location of his ancestors’ graves. William and Mary Grigor share the same headstone as Mary’s mother, Janet Fenwick. Ron said it was interesting to see on the headstone Janet described as ‘Relict of the late John Fenwick of Eagle Farm’. Ron checked his old Webster’s Dictionary which defined ‘relict’ as a widow. After exploring Nundah cemetery, the group moved on to Lutwyche Cemetery to locate the graves of Bill and Ethel’s grandparents, William Smith Burgess and his wife Clementina. The Bankfoot House collection of documents includes handwritten correspondence between Mary Ferris, Bill’s mother, and Joe Egan of the Nundah Historic Cemetery Preservation Association written in 1983 and 1984. It is believed the correspondence was initiated by Mr Egan, who was keen to gather family history about the people ‘behind’ the headstones in the cemetery. Nundah Cemetery received official recognition as a burial ground in 1866. Mr Egan wrote that it dated back to the forming of the first free settlement in Queensland by Lutheran missionaries who had settled on the opposite side of the road. At the recent AGM, the following office bearers were elected for 2012 /13 – president Ron Gillinder, vice-president Helen Page, secretary Keith Pennell, treasurer Elaine Reeves and committee member Jo Barrett.

Community Group Updates The Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club is growing! About 50 people attended the opening night of the Musos Club at Beerwah RSL on Thursday, June 28. Eleven acts performed including Greg Bryant, Peter Gawith with Andy on harmonica, Tommy Leonard, Richard Bojack, Paul Fagan, Glenn Major, Frank and Pam Moroney, Mick Od, The Merkin Brothers (Gerkin, Derkin, Ferkin and special guest Uncle Zerkin) and yours truly. The theme of the evening was Australian songwriters and, not surprisingly, they dominated the evening. Original songs were a feature with Greg Bryant introducing us to his lyricist Nel Tronnolone, who wrote the words for the three songs he performed. As Nel commented to me, it is not hard writing words for a performer who is as compelling and emotional in his delivery as Greg. Two of the Club regulars – Doug and Paul, created a new award for the Musos at Beerwah RSL - The ‘Most’ award. It is a most imposing looking thing with a guitar head sitting atop
a finely carved block of wood. The winner of the ‘Most’ for this month is Peter Gawith, who impressed all with a song he wrote for his father entitled ‘He was right’. As Peter said it was only written the evening previous to the event, so we were pleased to have heard his performance ‘hot off the press’. Musos Club evenings will continue on the second Thursday of the month – July 12, at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, and back at the Beerwah RSL on the fourth Thursday of the month. Club enquiries may be directed to Michael Whiticker on 5493 0046. Go onto Facebook and search for Glasshouse Mountains Muso Club and check us out on the Sunshine Coast Council Community Hub: http:// community.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/directory/ glasshouse-mountains-musicians-club?s=1391
Caloundra Family History Contributed by Roz Kuss
We welcomed guest speaker Mr Bill Kitson to the general meeting held on Thursday, June 21. An outstanding museum curator and historian, Bill’s most entertaining and informative subject was ‘Surveying History and Genealogy’. His great stories were intermingled with the science of surveying. He explained the difference between cadastral maps which relate to boundaries, borders and blocks of land; and topographic maps which deal with heights and contours of the land. Sir Augustus Charles Gregory, who was Queensland’s first Surveyor General, formed the Institute of Surveyors in 1876. Sir Augustus Charles Gregory was also an explorer, and famous as a navigator. His sextant is now housed at the museum, along with that of Charles Sturt. Because of Bill’s wider interest in history, the museum’s collection grew from simply holding artefacts to including diaries, artwork, photographs and biographies which captured the personal and social history of those involved in
surveying and mapping. Many historical maps of Queensland were acquired, as well as the inclusion of the history of land development in the state. The surveying and cartography collection covers the period of 1840 to 1950; the collection boasts 4,000 artefacts and 9,000 photos dating from 1868. The group’s rooms and library at the Guide Hut at Caloundra are open for research every Saturday from 9.30am to 12.30pm. On the third Thursday of the month research is available from 9.30am to 12.00noon, followed by the general meeting which is held from 1.30pm to 4.00pm. Visitors are welcome to attend, as well as our members, and the guest speaker commences at 1.30pm. Information on the group’s calendar, resources, journal and activities is now available on our new website at www.caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au. Our Secretary June can be contacted on 5493 2679 or by email at caloundrafamilyres@ y7mail.com. Further details can be obtained from Valerie on 5437 3879 or Roz on 5493 1197.
Peachester District Horticulture Society Contributed by Patricia Bradford, Publicity Officer A warm welcome was extended to all on a rather chilly day for the June meeting. A big thank you from the P and C and students for our donation to the Peachester S.S. for their kitchen garden project. June Ockwell was bestowed with best wishes for celebrating her 90th birthday and presented with a cake. Results of the competition bench for May: 1st Kath Howitt, 2nd Coral Beutel. After lunch, members were very fortunate to be able to visit the splendid garden of Colin and Valmai Phillips. We spent an enjoyable time admiring the wonderful layout and large variety of flora. Thank you very much for showing us your impressive garden. The next meeting is on Thursday, July 19, 9.00am at the Peachester Hall. This is our Friendship Day so members are reminded to bring along a plant or garden related gift for the raffle. For this meeting only two entries are allowed for each section in the competition bench and two extra sections, potted plant up to 20cms and orchid. If you have any potted plants suitable for display, bring along to the hall from 3.00pm on the Wednesday. There will be a working bee to set up in preparation for Friendship Day. Please, bring along some home baked cakes, slices or biscuits to share with our visitors for lunch. Visitors welcome. For more information phone Patricia on 5496 9169.

Beerwah Hair and Beauty is excited to announce that the long awaited and much talked about ASAP microplus+ is now in store. This state of the art equipment brings together the universally recognised benefits of microdermabrasion with sonophoresis (soundwave treatment) for healthy, radiant skin. For those yet to experience the benefits of microdermabrasion, it is a non-surgical, safe and gentle procedure that deeply exfoliates and polishes the skin to stimulate new cell growth. Performing sonophoresis following the procedure is an excellent way to ensure the maximum absorption of active ingredients into the skin. While microdermabrasion removes dead skin cells and opens up the pores, sonophoresis uses ultrasonic technology to significantly increase the depth and rate at which active ingredients can be absorbed into the skin.

Living Well The Happy Mum With Jackie Hall - Author of The Happy Mum Handbook www.thehappymumhandbook.com I said to my work colleague the other day, most times I can feel so peaceful and serene, but for some reason my kids can undo all that in seconds. While I continue to practice what I preach, I also realise, this IS my practice - this is where my personal growth is at right now. This is what I presently have to learn. Some people are working on relationships, friendships, weight issues, money issues or career issues and that is where their development is focused right now. Mine is focused on patience, letting go of control and unconditional love despite another's behavior. Learning through experience is the purpose of life. If you are struggling with aspects of being a parent, cut yourself some slack. Perhaps this is exactly what you need to give you a better understanding of yourself, of your child, or
of life in general. Everyone struggles with something in life and these times are our biggest teachers. The quicker we can begin finding the lessons in our adversities, the quicker we often move past them. Being a parent can sometimes bring out issues from the past that once lay dormant or bring new issues to the surface that can be painful. But like any adversities in life, these issues force us to get new information and understanding on how to 'do' life and propel us to another level of development. What I've learnt from my own experiences of motherhood stress and postnatal depression is that I need to be able to separate my child's behaviour from how I'm thinking about the behaviour. When I can do this I can then deal with my issues independent of my child's behaviour and change that, instead of having to wait for them to behave in order for me to be happy. As I said before though, this is a practice and doesn't just happen overnight.
The Happy Mum Handbook is also available in hard copy, audio or digital at www.selfhelpformums.com and in all major bookstores.
When I grow up I’m going to be? A flight attendant who became a school teacher, a receptionist who became a nurse, a postman destined to be an IT manager and even a lawyer who yearned to be a creative writer... These are just some of the people who have changed careers - and their lives - after studying as mature-age students. If you don't love your current job, QUT careers counsellor Julie Hodgson says it's never too late to explore your options and follow your dreams. In a joint QUT and Caboolture Library initiative, a career kiosk will be open at Caboolture library on selected dates in July to provide free advice to help people find a job that they love and suit, rather than one that just pays the bills. TAFE or university study, trades, and other career avenues will be among the options discussed. The kiosk will be open at the new library on July 4 (11.00am to 4.00pm), July 5 (2.00pm to 6.00pm), July 18 (11.00am to 4.00pm), and July 19 (2.00pm to 6.00pm). Individual onehour counselling sessions will also be offered during selected July dates.
"Many people come to TAFE or university study through non-traditional pathways - they may have been working for a number of years, spent time raising a family, or taken a break from their studies," Ms Hodgson said. "They may be a first-time student using their old school results or work and life experience to gain entry to university, or they may be pursuing further study to build on previous university or TAFE qualifications." The career counsellors at the Caboolture Library kiosk will focus on three areas: - self understanding (looking at your past experiences, influences and interests to identify future career options) - career exploration (researching your career interests to help you make informed choices about your future) - career planning and decision-making (to help you make sense of your interests and goals and put plans in place to make change) For more information, email yourfuture@qut.edu. au or call 5316 7400. The career kiosk is being run by the QUT Widening Participation Careers Team.

World Forecast for July to December 2012 By Renee Badger We have just entered a universal number five year cycle. This can mean a lot of changes including travel, romance, and changes within the environment. It’s time to look within especially for our life purpose which will open new opportunities. The main thing this year is to have some fun, lighten up and enjoy yourself. The earth will be going through major physical changes with earthquakes, cyclones and unusual weather patterns. The planet Pluto is still affecting us in many ways, not just weather changes, but also the global money market. Pluto indicates a great deal of upheavals with big companies, the government, mass violence and a lot of corruption being brought to the surface, as we are seeing in Egypt, Libya and other northern countries of Africa. Pluto even brought about big changes in the banking industry in America, Spain, Greece and Italy. It’s also making our own banks more accountable about their own fees and charges. Uranus in adverse aspect to Pluto in August to October will cause more financial upheaval on the world money market. Uranus (which is now in Aries) will cause more violence, accidents and murders. There will also be new inventions with cars, planes, space flights and earthquakes. Revolutions will be more prominent, as in Egypt and Syria. The last time Uranus entered Aries was 84 years ago, in 1927. With Uranus in a very adverse position to Pluto, this will stir up many different weather patterns around the world as well as for us in Australia and New Zealand. Neptune in Pisces, which is a positive, (being in its own sign) shows great emphasis on entertainment such as the Olympic Games, music, theatre, dance, movies - all will be an outlet and a great way to relax. There will be some upheavals / fire around the Olympic Games in July / August, but security will be strong avoiding too many problems. For the last six months we have had restrictions in many areas of our lives affected by the planet Saturn which demands restructuring parts of our lives that need change, especially relationships. From July until the end of the year it should be much easier and clearer to focus on what we really want out of life and how to find a new direction. In October, Saturn moves into Scorpio which can put more pressure on the euro; this could be when Greece and Spain exit from the European money system.

Out and About Open day draws crowds BADYACC, Beerwah’s local youth and community centre, hosted an open day last week in a bid to encourage young people to drop in and check out all their facilities and services. The smell of the free sausage sizzle was too tempting for many, especially the regular crowd at the Beerwah skatepark. Visitors could also try their hand at spray painting, ping pong and basketball, to name a few of the many activities on offer. If you’ve yet to check out all the services on offer, get down to their new weekly open door sessions, every Thursday afternoon from 3.00pm - 5.00pm, where you can come and hang out and grab something to eat. BADYACC is located at the Beerwah Sportsground, adjacent to the 1 Beerwah skatepark.

You Said It Letters to the Editor Letters are printed at the discretion of the editor, Lea Parkes and her policy is to include letters which focus on issues and are not about personally attacking other people. For a letter to be considered for printing it must be accompanied by the name, address and phone number of the sender. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Preference is given to letters under 300 words. Letters may be edited to make them more readable, but the meaning will not be changed. Regular correspondents will be limited to alternate issues to give everyone a chance to have their say. Letters must meet the Friday 12.00noon deadline. Views expressed in the 'You said it' page are those of the writer - and not this publication. Please send your letters to letters@gcnews.com.au or fax to 5438 7446.
Let’s talk about the Carbon Tax The start of the new financial year has also signaled the introduction of the much debated Carbon Tax. Love it or hate it, we’ve all got an opinion, but what will it actually mean for you and your family? We’d like to hear from our readers what they think of the carbon tax. Do you agree with it? Will it be likely to affect your family’s carbon footprint? Send us your comments to letters@gcnews.com. au or fax to 5438 7446. Please be sure to keep your letters to no more than 300 words, and include your name, address and a contact phone number.
We asked our Facebook friends Now that the Carbon Tax has arrived as of July 1 - tell us what you think about it and how you think it might impact on your family? Sharon King I actually don't understand how the carbon tax will affect my family as I don't entirely understand how the carbon tax works. Heidi Lawrence I received a letter from my electricity supplier Origin and just for fun I decided to re-evaluate my last bill and work out how much more my electricity would cost me. Based on the same usage my bill would go up by $17.00 which I thought was not too bad, but then I noticed how much they had decided to put up the charge to access the grid. This amount was a 100 per cent increase and explained by the electricity company as the need to upgrade infrastructure, i.e. smart metres. It seems to be a bit of price gouging on a state level that will be blamed on a federal initiative. How many more will try this? Brumby's is another company that is
also under fire for a similar thing. Keep your eyes open and speak up. Aannsha Jones Considering Mother Nature pumps out more carbon than humans do in volcanic activity etc., perhaps we should tax her? In other words, I think it a ridiculous tax, just another revenue maker. Catherine Louise Stewart You'd be stupid to believe it wasn't going to make EVERYTHING.... more expensive.
Skippy Park To the individuals that vandalised Skippy Park. I am so sorry that your life is so uninteresting that you have to destroy things that are in place for everyone's enjoyment to find happiness. I hope that you find someone to love and someone to love you before you end up in jail. A park user Beerwah

News from Parliament
Solutions to problem intersection
Get Involved with Queensland's Parliamentary Committees
Check your electricity contract
During a recent session of Parliament, the Independent Commission of Audit was released, painting a very grim picture of our state’s finances. The report has given an indication that the State debt will hit $100 billion in 2018-19 unless urgent action is taken by the Newman Government. It also outlined that interest payments on the debt already accrued will run at $3.5 billion in 2011/2012. The Newman Government now has the task of considering all cost saving recommendations in the lead up to the September state budget. It is glaringly obvious that the financial situation Queensland is faced with is dire. There are no mincing words on this one - there are some tough decisions that will now need to be made. Key infrastructure may have to wait while we get the state back on track. Rest assured, we have the tools we need to turn this around and we are optimistic that the future will once again be bright for this great state. The introduction of a portfolio-based parliamentary committee system in 2011 was one of the most significant and important reforms to the Queensland Parliament since its establishment in 1860. There are now seven committees that are each aligned to specific government departments and have responsibilities to examine and scrutinise the activities, budgets and proposed legislative changes of these departments. The new portfolio committees have powers to examine Bills (proposed legislation) before they are debated in Parliament. With the commencement of the new parliament following our recent election, new Bills and other matters will be forwarded to the relevant portfolio committees with inquiry processes then to commence. Details of these enquiries will all be published on the Parliament’s web site, www.parliament.qld.gov.au, under the ‘Work of Committees’ section. Details of committee hearings that are to be broadcast live and how to access this footage will be published on the front page of the Parliament’s web site. I encourage you to get involved with these parliamentary committees and have your say. By making submissions and keeping informed about committee enquiries, you are contributing to Queensland’s democratic process and shaping its direction. 20

JULY 11 2012
Some residents will remember I recently wrote to Transport Minister Scott Emerson regarding safety concerns at a dangerous intersection; Hardwood Road and Railway Street in Landsborough. I’ve received a response from the Minister in a letter dated June 25 and it states Main Roads have confirmed the intersection has been identified for the future installation of traffic signals as part of the Safer Roads Sooner program. TMR is investigating options for fast-tracking delivery of this project ahead of the scheduled timeframe of installation in 2014-15. I will continue to pursue this matter. While receiving feedback about this, one resident brought up a very valid point that could help alleviate part of the problem. That is, the length of overgrown grass at the intersection that impairs visibility for residents exiting Hardwood Road or Railway Street onto Steve Irwin Way. I have contacted Main Roads to review the intersection and mowing needs. Most electricity retailers are not increasing costs beyond that of the Carbon Tax, at around 10 per cent. Origin Energy, however, is increasing its charges well beyond that and its fixed service fee by up to 125 per cent. Whether your household is with Origin or another retailer, if you think your bill has gone up by more than around 10 per cent you will usually be able to switch to another retailer. In many cases, the termination fee shouldn't apply if they are charging more than set prices.
How to Switch Retailers
Step 1: Contact your new retailer and tell them that you would like to switch. They will ask a number of questions and will contact your old retailer to arrange it, usually from the date of the next meter read. Step 2: You should contact your old retailer and tell them you would like to terminate your contract. Some retailers require a 20 business day notice period, however, your new retailer will make sure the transfer happens. Step 3: Confirm with your new retailer the date the new contract starts. You need to know what type of contract you are on and whether there are any penalties or fees attached for breaking or exiting your contract. While many contracts allow you to exit early without paying a fee, you should check your contract to see if any fees apply. Ask your retailer for a copy of your contract. www.gcnews.com.au

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship
In this, my first contribution to Glasshouse Country News, I would like to thank everyone for the very warm welcome I have received. I commenced as Parish Priest of the Caloundra Catholic Parish in Easter week this year. Since then I have enjoyed several journeys through the more rural aspects of the parish including Maleny, Landsborough, Mooloolah, Beerwah and Glass House. What has struck me is the genuine and sincere warmth that exists in these communities and the sense of co-operation that exists, especially between the churches. There is obviously a long history among the different denominations of sharing as much as we can as we try to be a living sign of God’s love, compassion and forgiveness in the community. Indeed, I was very humbled when I was commissioned by our Archbishop Mark Coleridge in Caloundra a few weeks ago that ministers of the other churches could be present. Of all the challenges that are part of moving to a new place of ministry and a new home, making
meeting will also now incorporate the Sunday Orchid Growers Group. Visitors are always welcome to attend. For more information phone Di on 5496 2861.

sure Murphy handles the transition as smoothly as possible is certainly one such challenge. Murphy is a four-year-old Border Collie and seems to be accepting of his new appointment to Caloundra parish. Once again people have been quite marvelous in making sure he has a warm dry bed and a few friends to round up. Because the Collies are a very active breed of dog, a regular walk is a must. So after a few days of rain when Murphy is acting more like a caged lion and wants to round up the birds flying overhead, it is definitely time for a walk. Each morning while Murphy enjoys the walk I am constantly reminded of the beauty of God’s creation as we enjoy it in this part of the world. Whoever or whatever leads us to a simple prayer of thanks is a real grace - a gift, and that gift can come in many forms even on four legs.

Sickness/Accident Insurance
Have you thought about Sickness & Accident Insurance, its not just for those of us who are self-employed. Most employees are covered under Workcover for a work related accident, however you may have no protection against loss of income from sickness or an accident outside of work, this is 22

the scenario for self-employed 100%. If you are asking yourself “do I need this cover” give some thought to the following: How will you repay your mortgage/loans How will you pay the numerous other bills How will you take care of your family and day to day living expenses
How long would your savings last if you were receiving no income If you have a car you have vehicle insurance, a house you have house insurance, you have a body, why not insure that as well. It is probably one of the most important insurances you could have.

Having Sickness and Accident insurance would mean you would still receive a nominated amount each week which would allow your life to go on as normal as possible while you recover. If you have any questions regarding a Sickness and Accident policy we would be pleased to help.

Last month, I reminded you all that CCA treated timber was a no-no for structures where there would be primary contact with people’s skin. And – like magic – the following week we received some advice from the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) that some new restrictions on the use of copper chrome arsenate (CCA) have come into force. From July 1, CCA has been declared a restricted chemical, meaning that the chemical itself can only be supplied to and used by suitably authorised and trained operators. I’m guessing that before this, do-it-yourself type kits may have been available and I’m kind of thinking that the APVMA thought that this may not have been such a good idea. Restrictions on the sale and use of CCA treated timber remains the same. It must be identified as CCA treated with the words ‘Treated with copper chrome arsenate’ and it cannot be used for high-contact structures such as garden furniture, picnic tables, exterior seating, children’s play equipment, patio and domestic decking, and handrails. This time of year, it’s also important to remember that you should never ever burn CCA treated timber because this releases the dangerous chemicals into the air. That’s a big NEVER EVER. If you have any old CCA treated timber you want to get rid of, you can take it up to the Beerwah Recycling Centre on Roberts Road (or into the Caloundra facility on Piece Avenue). If it’s something that can be safely recycled (like coppers logs), they’ll take it for resale, otherwise it’s OK to go into the general waste skips at the site – in domestic quantities of course. If you’re using CCA timber, it’s a fairly good idea to use gloves – the same applies when handling any timber really. Wear a disposable dust mask if you’re cutting or sawing to prevent you breathing in the potentially cancercausing chemicals in the wood. Sanding the timber probably isn’t a good option, as you and everyone around you will be breathing in fine dust containing copper, chromium and arsenic. If you really have to sand some edges, do it in a well ventilated space and wear a mask, goggles, long sleeves and trousers and clean up well afterwards. Wash your hands after you’ve finished and never ever smoke or eat food at the same time as handling treated timber. Better still – just don’t smoke at all. You can get some alternative timber treatments, including ammoniacal copper quaternary (ACQ) and Tanalith E (copper azole). Timber treated with these will generally be more expensive and don’t yet have the proven long service track record of CCA.

The weather was beautiful and sunny allowing approximately 100 riders to take part in the sporting and jumping events. They were all dressed in their fantastic pink and purple gear as well as spraying their ponies with sparkly colours, love hearts and rainbows. All received either pink or purple ribbons and 1st to 4th place received a gorgeous sparkly purple trophy. Beerwah Ladies Golf
News in Brief
Contributed by Jenny Kelly
Fine weather on Thursday saw 72 ladies play in 3 Divisions for our Monthly Medal. Our Club Pro, John, always comes up with a great trophy for the girls to vie for every month and July was no exception. Not only did the winners pick up a Medal to wear, they also won dinner and a trip to the movies. Division 1 winner was Hope Hannah with a score of 72 Nett. Hope's radar was spot on, with only 25 putts helping her to that great score. Hope was followed by Lyn Lambert with a 75 Nett. Jen Kelly won Division 2 with a score of 74 Nett, with Barbara Lee being Runner Up on 76 Nett. Third Division player, Brid John is off to the movies with a score of 72 Nett, while Carol Fraser was Runner Up with a score of 74 Nett. There is an ‘Off the Stick’ competition held on Monthly Medal days and the winner in Division 1 was Sonia Kenway with a Gross score of 89.
Teens invited to read and win at their local library
Brid and Jen with Club Pro, John Mellish Division 2 was Jill Hughes with 99 Gross, and Division 3 was Fay Wareham with 106. The NTP's were Jenny Hosking on the second hole, Carol on the 5th, Lyn took out 16, and Shirley Cooper on 18. Heather Henn won a Ball Voucher for the Lucky Card. Weather permitting, we'll see you all next week, until then stay safe and good golfing.
Countdown to London The world game! Football fans will delight when the world game kicks off at this year’s Olympic Games. However die-hard Aussie supporters will be disappointed, with neither the men’s or women’s teams qualifying to compete in London 2012. Guess no one has heard about all the young talent alive and well here in Glasshouse! From its beginnings in 2002, Mooloolah Soccer Club has prided itself in being a family orientated club where everyone is welcome and fun and sport go hand in hand. The club boasts a floodlit senior field, one intermediate and two junior fields. Teams range from Under 6 through to over 35’s. Mooloolah Soccer Club is part of the Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association and is situated on Mooloolah Connection Road at Glenview. We have many families who have members playing in the junior and adult teams, including three sets of father and son players in our men’s team. Mooloolah Soccer Club has historically seen many players going on to play representative soccer. Brothers Paul and Dan Kerle currently play for the Men’s Mooloolah United team and both have an impressive history in their respective soccer careers. Paul has been
playing soccer for 21 years and made his debut rep appearance in the U 12 team, since then he has played every year. He has represented the Churches Queensland team for eight years and made the Churches Australian team twice. Dan has played for 19 years and his rep career started with the U 9’s. He made the state team in U 14’s and played ever since, including the role of captain of the U 17’s. He has played for the Churches Australian team three times. Training day is Wednesday for all ages, with seniors under lights. Please call the club President Simon Smith on 0448 509 139 for any further information. At Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club (BeeGees), teams range from Under 6 to Seniors. Training days are dependent on players and coaches availability. Games are played on Saturdays for Small Sided Football and Friday night for the senior teams. For more information, contact Jo Black at beegeepresident@bigpond.com.au or Andrea Poole, publicity and promotions, at Andreapoole@bigpond.com.au
Fast Olympic Facts – Football • Australia entered a men’s football team in Melbourne in 1956 but did not compete again until Seoul 1988. Australia placed fifth in Athens 2004 but did not qualify for Beijing 2008. • The ‘world game’ made its Olympic debut in Paris in 1900, along with water polo, rugby, cricket, polo and tug-of-war. Since its introduction, football has missed featuring on the Olympic program only once, at Los Angeles in 1932. www.gcnews.com.au

There are four pools of four teams in the men’s tournament with the top two teams in each pool progressing to the quarter-finals. • The women have two pools of six teams with the top two teams in each pool after the preliminary matches progressing to the semi-finals.
Council is inviting teens to be in the running for some fantastic prizes in the ‘Teen Read Month’ promotion at Sunshine Coast Libraries across the Coast this month. Teens aged (12-18 years) must become a member of Sunshine Coast Libraries and register library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ sitePage.cfm?code=teen-read-entry or in person at their local library. When teens read five items and complete a reading log, they can then choose from four great prize packs. Prizes include $50.00 vouchers to be redeemed in local stores to purchase books, sports gear, electronics or crafts. This year, there is also a prize for schools. Entrants simply nominate their school to be in the running to win a big box of books donated by Voices on the Coast for their school library. The competition closes 8.00pm on Tuesday, July 31. For further information visit Sunshine Coast Libraries library.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=teen-read or the Beerwah Library.
Doorknock to make a difference
You can make a real difference to the lives of leukaemia patients by answering a knock at your door between July 14 - 27 and giving generously to the Leukaemia Foundation’s friendly volunteer collectors. This year’s Doorknock Appeal also offers the opportunity to doorknock or donate online by visiting www.doorknock.net.au. The Foundation hopes to raise $1.2 million from the appeal to support blood cancer patients with the provision of services such as homeaway-from-home accommodation, counselling, education and transport to medical appointments. It is estimated that five people in Queensland will be diagnosed with either leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder. One person is diagnosed every hour across Australia.
Low fat cookbook queen offers free diabetes book
Best selling low-fat cookbook author and weightloss expert Annette Sym is offering people a free diabetes e-book to coincide with National Diabetes Awareness Week, which runs from July 8 - 14. The FREE e-book, Diabetes Essentials, is a must-have guide for anyone living with, or at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Annette said the e-book contained lots of facts and tips about the disease, as well as recipes suitable for diabetics and anyone who needed to lose weight. Annette said around seven per cent of the Australian population has diabetes and for every person diagnosed there is another walking around undiagnosed. Some of the symptoms include persistent thirst, excessive passing of urine, extreme tiredness, weight gain or weight loss, changes in appetite, blurred vision, itchiness, thrush and impotence.
