Scouts recycling benefits local area

You may have seen the new red Containers for Change bins located around the region recently. These are provided by the Scout Recycling Centre, with funds raised through the recycling of bottles supporting Scouts Queensland and our local community.
Along with Beerwah Marketplace and Beerwah Village, Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Australia Zoo, Big Kart Track and Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club are among local businesses and community groups working with Scouts Recycling.
Scout Recycling business development manager Gavin Kelly says Scout Recycling pays a fee for the containers directly to the organisation that hosts the collection bin, which in many cases goes back into the local community
For example the funds received by the Beerwah Village and Beerwah Marketplace are given to the Glasshouse Country War on Waste group to share in the local community.
Gavin said the bins were well received and while they were filling up slowing, the important thing was that people were becoming more aware of why they were there.
“It’s a great way to fundraise for local clubs and organisations, with money raised being reinvested into the local community,” Gavin said.
“Since the introduction of the Queensland Government initiative in November last year, Queenslanders have really adopted the process and the return rate has been in the high 40% - which is great.”
From November 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019, Queenslanders returned a whopping 650 million bottles at centres across the state - a far cry from the state having one of the country’s highest incidents of litter a few years ago.
Not only is it increasing awareness about the benefits of recycling for the environment, it is a great way for the public to support local community projects.
Currently collection spots are serviced from Scout Recycling Centre’s Eagle Farm depot but as the need grows they hope to open a local Sunshine Coast depot.
Schools, clubs, sporting groups and grounds, restaurants, cafes, factories, retail and other business and industry are all eligible to be serviced.
