Hi Everyone
A
s I sit here wondering what to write for this week’s column I have one eye on the ‘Winter Olympics’. Not that I know anything about it or have experienced snowboarding, but I find it compulsive viewing. Particularly after the girl (I think from Finland) did a dramatically spectacular fall smashing her head so hard onto the snow that her helmet cracked. Then it would appear she must have blacked out and tumbled, her body bouncing down the slope like a rag doll. I find myself thinking wow, where are the medical crew? Where is the snow mobile to whisk her away for medical treatment - because surely she can’t be ok – something must be broken?

A Mooloolah player is put through his paces by the Brisbane Roar Coaching Staff
Then with the most minor amount of assistance she seems to come to, is back on her feet (well her snowboard) where she continues down the slope, and is hugged by her fellow competitors – while she is showing them the helmet which has been broken apart. I look on in awe - I still have 10 more days of wearing my moonboot on my broken ankle – which I achieved by falling off the edge of a paved footpath. So hopefully with the time I have on my hands I can immerse myself in viewing these extreme sports and be inspired to achieve my own extreme physical challenges – like maybe one day wearing high heels?

Mooloolah Soccer roars By Greg Brown
Mooloolah Soccer Club Junior players were put through their paces by the Brisbane Roar Coaching Staff, the clinic was a first for the club and was a massive success and one they will be looking at doing again next year. Club President Simon Smith said it was absolutely fabulous, and a great experience for the young players – they were also really excited to be able to play on the big main field under lights, just like the senior teams which gave them a real buzz. The clinic was part of the Brisbane Roar Active Program with approximately 40 players ranging in age from six - 12 years. The players were put through exercises, drills, skills and mini-matches played in an inflatable training field which the Roar Coaches brought with them, the field mostly kept the players and ball in, but couldn’t quite contain the excitement of the young players. Local mum, Kylie Gillespie said the kids had fantastic fun. It was a wonderful learning experience and we are very grateful to Mooloolah Soccer Club organisers and the Brisbane Roar, she said.

“The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce has been working with Mal Brough Member for Fisher to secure funding for the installation of a CCTV public space surveillance system in the Glasshouse Country townships,” said Chamber President Bob McLean. “The plan is to protect the community with a ‘Not welcome if you don’t respect us’ message, complementing the existing private surveillance systems already in place,” he said. Mal said he’s is keen to work with local businesses and groups – such as the Chamber of Commerce – to get the best outcome for the protection of the community using the commercial districts, as well as the business operations themselves. “This is why, during the election, I pledged to provide $150,000 funding for CCTV technology to help fight anti-social behaviour in Beerwah and Landsborough,” he said. “We will be pushing the $150,000 through the upcoming budget process and will hope to have funding online in the 2014-15 financial year.” And we’re lucky to have the expertise of a local security professional in Adrian Korst from Beerwah Locksmiths to advise the Chamber on the different technology available.

Adrian Korst (right) shows Bob McLean and Mal Brough some CCTV technologies at his new Dyer Street, Landsborough workshop Adrian’s business is a local family owned and operated enterprise which has grown over the last three years. As a result, they have recently moved from their Beerwah location into a larger new purpose-built building in Dyer Street in Landsborough. “CCTV is a proven crime preventative tool and there are some simple and cost effective systems on the market which would improve the safety of our local business districts,” said Adrian. “All local businesses should consider the technology available to monitor their premises. “I’m looking forward to having the chance to work with the Chamber of Commerce, Council and our local Federal Member when the funding is allocated for the project,” he said. With the cooperation of governments, groups and local businesses, the future for our local townships is looking bright, secure and welcoming.

Simpson Street facelift on track for completion The face of Beerwah is changing forever, with the Simpson Street renovations coming together and the Beerwah Marketplace redevelopment making headway. The almost $5 million council project to transform Simpson Street is pretty much bang on schedule, according to Sunshine Coast Project Officer Adam Stewart. “We’re making great progress and the project is on track to having all the main elements of the streetscaping completed by early March,” he said. “For the general public, they’ll be able to walk the length of Simpson Street along the brand new footpath adjacent to the shops while the landscaping near the road is finished off. “It’s been a huge effort by all the construction and landscaping teams, with the patient cooperation of the Simpson Street traders and the Beerwah community in general.” Although the power cabling has been undergrounded and businesses will be switching over very soon, Adam says that the public will still see the poles for a while longer. “As the power network is linked with the Beerwah marketplace development, we’ll be leaving the poles along the street until they’ve completed the undergrounding of the power at their site. After which time, all the poles will be removed, giving the street a clean finish,” Adam said. Once the project is completed, all the infrastructure will be maintained by council with Beerwah recently being classified as a ‘precinct’ for maintenance, which has a precinct inspector
“The construction of the new complex – which will feature an expanded Supa IGA, a brand new target store and a host of food and specialty shops – is on time and on target for a Christmas opening,” she said. Divisional Councillor, Rick Baberowski is excited with the progress. “The community can start to glimpse the standard of the pathway network and elements of landscaping that the Place + streetscape project will reveal in the coming months,” he said. “I’m pleased with the accelerated pace of the project, and thanks to favourable weather conditions we’re actually slightly ahead of schedule. “Local businesses are still feeling the main impact of the on-ground works and I’m looking forward to the time when the project is not impacting on our traders.
Simpson Street is taking shape to coordinate and oversee that the area is kept up to scratch. “The landscaping elements will be maintained by the contractor for a 12 month period before being handed back to council. “So locals should feel confident that the area will be looked after, once the construction teams pack up and give the main street back to the Beerwah community,” he said. Meanwhile, the Beerwah Village development (the old Wimberley’s/Supa IGA site) is moving ahead, according to Judy Dewar, Property Manager for Village Shopping Centre group.
“Locals are starting to recognise the significant improvements and I’ve heard a number of comments about the improved footpaths, particularly given the poor condition they had previously been in. Once the project is complete, Cr Baberowski is looking forward to celebrating with the Beerwah community. “There will be an official opening when the project is completed but so much of the timing depends on the weather - I’m happy to receive ideas from people about how they’d like to celebrate the new look, feel and function of Beerwah,” he said.

Same name, new faces
By Sonia Clark
Laurie Evans is a well-known name in local real estate and while the ownership of the business has recently changed hands, rest assured the new owners are committed to continuing the service and reputation that has successfully serviced the local community. Given the importance of local real estate to Laurie Evans, Glasshouse Country News caught up with the man himself to get some reflection on his time in the region and his nearly 40 years in real estate. Laurie Evans office in the early 1980's Falling into real estate sales after an injury left him unable to continue working at the factory job he held, Laurie started with Bill Mathers at an office in Strathpine, North Brisbane. “It was commission only – so you only got paid if you sold and we worked seven days a week often until 10.00pm,” Laurie explained. “In those days you had to sell at least 30 km from the office so we sold from Gympie to Toogoolawah and I started selling up this way.” In the late 1970’s, blocks were selling for around $11,000 and Laurie and his brother set up an office at Landsborough. “Back then Landsborough was basically shut down - we could see the potential and that the town could only go one way - which was up.” The brothers were known as the cowboys on the highway because of the cowboy hats they would wear when selling their rural properties.

From this original office, Laurie went on to open offices in Beerwah, Pacific Paradise, Glass House, Eudlo and Mooloolah. With over 24 staff members at the peak of ownership, he credits his success to old fashioned service and a personal touch. Whilst Laurie Evans Real Estate has sold thousands of properties over the last 35 years, Laurie can still remember some houses that he sold three times over. Although he credits change in the area to the railway and road upgrades and growth in Beerwah, Laurie believes that rural atmosphere remains and with the advantage of being close to Brisbane and the coast, people are drawn to the lifestyle. Deciding to wind down a few years ago, and after nearly 40 years in the industry, Laurie and his wife Nicole decided to sell in order to spend time with family and to travel. They are currently renovating the original bakery in Landsborough, having just completed the Old Bank building. Laurie would like to thank all the lessors and clients for their continued support over the years.

The new directors of Laurie Evans Real Estate, Rod Bowden, Roy Philpott and a silent third party saw an opportunity to progress in real estate with a well operated business that had a long standing name in the industry. “The name will stay and we will Laurie Evans today continue to build on the reputation that Laurie has established. We want to take what he’s done and move it into the future,” says Rod. “Laurie Evans has a philosophy of exceptional service. He was a bit of a doer and he brought colour and life into the industry at the time. He ran a successful business with good bones and a good reputation,” Rod added. “We believe this beautiful area is going through a shift, with the whole region developing and growing.” The new owners will bring a diversity of different experiences to the business. Rod brings 33 years of government, regulatory and management background in both Queensland regional and city councils. His area of expertise is in compliance and community standards focussing on customer contact and legislative standards. These skills are highly desirable when dealing with the regulatory standards of property sales and rentals. He has an interest in implementing strategic systems and quality improvement and is big on sustainability.
Roy has been in real estate for over 18 years and his passion for the industry is very apparent. “I absolutely love real estate!” His background includes previously building up a successful real estate agency from scratch and he believes trust and honesty along with great service is the key to sales success. Staff are the key to the business and along with retaining long term staff members, the new office currently employs14 staff members. With their feet under the desk for just over three weeks, the new owners have a vision to retain the essential feel of the agency whilst moving forward to enhance some areas in order to deliver an even better service. Plans include upgrading the computer systems and modernising the shop front. Already the largest independent real estate office in the region, they are keen to put on more team members as the business grows. “It’s all about the people, our staff and our clients,” adds Rod.

But recently local Beerwah real estate agent Ursula Starkovsky has been struggling with Telstra over internet access at her Yeates Road residence. “Telstra constantly seems to be in the limelight for all the wrong reasons,” said Ursula. “Recently we moved from Glass House to Yeates Road in Beerwah. No big deal you might think; but ... it is a big deal – NO ADSL connection available! “We were informed by very well trained and friendly Telstra staff that they are happy to put us on a waiting list and as soon as a slot becomes available we would be notified. After further investigations we found out that the infrastructure is simply not available in our area; that is no cables – so no connection is possible anyway. “We would be waiting for a very long time to have access to ADSL.” Ursula tried using the mobile broadband network by using a Telstra supplied USB modem device. “That was next to useless, as the mobile phone coverage is so patchy where we live that the signal would never stay strong enough to do anything,” Ursula said. In exasperation, she contacted Mal Brough’s office, knowing that he was interested in local problems with the mobile phone coverage. “One of his staff told me that he had the same problem in Twin Waters! “He mentioned that he solved it with a small radio / microwave dish on his roof from a company
called ‘Redde.net’ that beams directly to his property,” she said. Ursula didn’t realise that there are different options available other than cable and mobile coverage internet. “Needless to say that I immediately contacted John from ‘Redde.net’ (based at Buderim) and I am now the proud owner of a working very fast broadband installation getting the signal from Bald Knob to and from the dish on our roof. “We now have upload and download speeds that rival Sydney and Melbourne! “For me working from home, this is such a better outcome than anything Telstra could offer,” a (now) happy Ursula said. The Director of Redde.net, John Platt will be speaking at an upcoming Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce meeting. GCNews will print the meeting details once confirmed. Member for Fisher, Mal Brough would also like to remind GCNews readers that it is not too late to register for the community meeting with Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s Parliamentary Secretary for Communications regarding the state of our mobile phone coverage. “Already we have had 115 locals registering for the meeting, for which we hope a date will be finalised with Minister Turnbull’s office very soon,” said Mal. “If people have issues with their mobile phone coverage locally and would like to attend this community meeting, please contact my Fisher electorate office on 5444 4888 or email Cameron.Outridge@aph.gov.au

The Sunshine Hospice Ltd is currently looking for volunteers who would like to donate their time and enthusiasm to the Charity’s fundraising and events team. We are a vibrant enthusiastic group who are extremely dedicated with a professional stance and a commitment to a community project which benefits those in need of quality end of life care. We meet once a month to organise and create fundraising events to support the running of Katie Rose Hospice in Doonan. The Hospice is a ‘home away from home’ adapted and equipped to provide quality end of life care for the terminally ill. Among many services we offer our guests is specialised and personalised palliative nursing care and counselling with an all-encompassing approach, tailored for people diagnosed with a lifelimiting illness. We are a not-for-profit charity that is self funded and reliant on community involvement and donations. Our Charity has attracted incredible support from the Sunshine Coast community at large, who to date have contributed greatly to this project and taken us to where we stand today, but the need to continue and grow is very clear. We require new members from the community to assist our fundraising team in taking this charity to the next level, so if you have some time on your hands (however large or small) and wish to help out the Sunshine Coast’s very own Community Hospice fundraising efforts, we would love to have you join us. Should you wish to be involved with us in this journey, please phone 5479 0881 during business hours or contact us at admin@ sunshinehospice.org.au

Pocket computers Isn’t it amazing how small computers are today? Most of us carry one with us every day. It fits in our pocket, helps us navigate with GPS, takes photos and even doubles as a torch! I’m obviously referring to smart phones. Here are a few hints and tips to help you get more from your device, and maybe save some dollars! We’ll start with saving money. If your data usage is running away from you, check which apps are running. It may be that you have an app running in the background using up precious data allowance. Switch these datamunchers off when you’re done; it’s only a tap away if you need it back. This also helps free up phone resources (if things are slowing up this will be the main cause). On the subject of saving money, if you haven’t a protective screen on your phone then you really should. They can be very cheap; even non-scratch top of the range protectors are under $10.00 on eBay. I’d also recommend you use a protective case or wallet around your phone - I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dropped mine, thankfully in a wallet. If you do crack your screen, they can be replaced. Battery usage is a big thing nowadays. Most of us have to charge our phones daily. Most power is used up making and receiving calls, but also, every time your screen is on. If you’re done for the day, and you don’t want to be disturbed, turn your Phone to ‘Aeroplane Mode’. This stops all transmission from your phone and saves power; just remember to turn Aeroplane Mode off in the morning. Backup - Probably the best advice I can give is to backup your phone! iPhone users: sync your phone with iTunes, Samsung users: sinc with Kies. In the terrible event that your phone dies, you can restore all of your data and settings to a new one and away you go. This could save you a lot of time and grief!

Full Steam Ahead for 2014
The year is getting off to a flying start for the chamber. To read of the ‘Shopping local success’ of a GCNews reader was a demonstration of the effect of the ‘Shop Local 1ST campaign being promoted by the chamber. This campaign will continue to present this message for 2014. You can be a part of this campaign by collecting your bumper stickers from Total Microsystems in Beerwah (next to Subway) or from any of the chamber members, you can find them on the chamber’s website. www.glasshousemountains. com.au The chamber has been working with council on many aspects of the Beerwah streetscaping project to achieve the best outcome. The chamber will continue to work with council and the business community to take advantage of the new streetscape. This revitalised space will be something for locals and visitors to be celebrated and enjoyed. Attending the Sunshine Coast Futures Conference last year at the Innovation Centre, I met Dr Nick Stevens. We then met twice more with several key property owners in Beerwah. The outcome was for the 14 final year Regional and Urban Planning students from the University of the Sunshine Coast to conduct the Beerwah Project. The students will look at the benefits of
the Place + action plans, opportunities presented by the streetscaping, the consequences of the closure of the rail crossing and opportunities to be created. These are only some of the elements of this very broad project scope which will form part of their degree assessment. The final report will provide the chamber members with a set of goals to assist business and the community to plan, in order to provide the services required to support the residents of Glasshouse Country. This project requires input from the whole community; the students will interview as many community groups as possible, Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland State Government. As Beerwah is the major centre for Glasshouse Country it is important to be involved. The exciting part of this opportunity is these students are the planners of the future and these young eyes with new ideas, will build on the work that has been done to date. This is not about reinventing the wheel but making it perform better. The project will run for 13 weeks. To be a part of this exciting journey please join us this Thursday, February 13 at the Beerwah RSL at 5.30pm to meet Dr Nick Stevens, listen to him outline the project and find out how you can become engaged.

Award winning system
Fruit Growers Co-Op store in Elimbah has been awarded this month’s Agsafe Achievers award in recognition of the new health and safety improvements made to the business. They were awarded the national prize after installing a new pallet racking system and ensuring customers and staff are informed of important WHS procedures. Store Manager Lionel Sach arranges all Agsafe training for himself and two staff members and works closely with an Agsafe facilitator during store assessments. He said he recently worked with Agsafe’s Queensland Facilitator Alan Porter on a new pallet racking system. Alan retired from his role at Agsafe last December. “We used to have some of the fertiliser stacked on top when there was a shortage of room. Now we’ve got more efficient use of space and
Lionel Sach, Brad Dilling and Brendan-Hughes from Elimbah Coop it’s given a better look to the store. Staff now prefers working in the area,” he said. Mr Sach said there’s more to Agsafe than just passing a course or store assessment. “At the training courses you get a sense of different ideas and different ways of doing things from other people in the industry,” he said. “You can be compliant but it doesn’t mean there isn’t a better way of being compliant.”
Bindi boosts family business with TAFE course Local celebrity Bindi Irwin is setting her sights on furthering her career as she begins the second year of her Certificate III in Business at Sunshine Coast TAFE this month. The enthusiastic conservationist says taking her skills to the next level in a TAFE course is a natural step towards building the family business, iconic tourism attraction, Australia Zoo. 12

“I wanted to take a course in business just so I had that extra little bit of knowledge, because as I’m getting older I’m becoming more involved in the business side of things at the Zoo,” Bindi said. “I’m trying to get a good grasp on the business, because in a couple of years I’ll be 18 and it’ll be a bigger responsibility, so I decided to enrol in TAFE so I’m well prepared for the career that I’ve chosen,” she said. The flexibility of her local TAFE initially drew Bindi to a course; an avid ambassador for distance education, she applies this experience and online study regime to her TAFE studies. www.gcnews.com.au

Returning to the classroom Contributed by Psyche Clark Students at Caboolture Montessori School are enjoying their return to class. Ruth, five, commented; “It’s fun at school because we don’t always have to sit at desks and it’s fun to make friends at school.” Rebecca, seven, said, “I like writing stories because you can use different words you’ve never heard of before.” Older students often help younger students in multiage classes. Zahra, six said, “I like helping other people because it’s fun.” The Sea Lions class has been exploring the human body. “It took me two days to make a skull. I like making things that take a while – it’s better because you take your time,” said Leon, aged seven. “If you run too fast you need more oxygen,” said eight-year-old Connor. Children throughout the school have been continuing to focus on the Montessori virtues of grace and courtesy and have immersed themselves in learning through exploring hands-on classroom materials.
The Sea Lions class students We have chosen to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The children were delighted that Sifu Brett Fenton and his team from the Red Dragon Dance Troupe of Red Dragon Martial Arts performed a Lion Dance for us in the first week of term. The Dragon Dance itself originated during the Han Dynasty and was started by the Chinese who had shown great belief and respect towards the dragon. It symbolises the bringing of good luck and prosperity in the year to come for all human beings on earth.
Extra trailer parking at the dam Paddle craft enthusiasts at Ewen Maddock Dam will be happy to know there is new trailer parking. Seqwater has changed the main car park so that it now has designated car and trailer parking spots. The bus parking area has also been improved, the car park area now has dedicated places for four to five cars with trailers (depending on the size) in addition to the existing parking available to cars and horse floats.

Say you’re the captain of an ocean liner crossing the Atlantic on its maiden voyage. There are radio reports of icebergs. You choose not to believe these reports and take the risk of sailing at full steam instead of slowing down and keeping watch. We all know the rest of the story. Reducing waste of energy and reducing costs will benefit society whether the climate changes a little bit or a lot. Let me quote K Pullen (GCNews December 17). ‘And then, much, much better of course, there are the ‘alternative’ energy sources that have seemingly been buried by vested interests for decades technology which would provide more than sufficient clean and cheap energy for the entire world!’ The alternative energy sources create way more jobs than the old fashioned reliance on coal and oil. Adapting to the probability of climate change in order to prevent it will have many benefits. You’ll see in the pages of this newspaper many contributions which support solar panels, recycling, and tree planting. What is needed is a lot more, because the actions being taken now are not sufficient to prevent the increase in CO2. Returning to Mr Pullen’s recent letter (January 22), how do you get parts per million (ppm) of CO2 to be different to percentage of CO2? Each of these measures is usually a weight of CO2 compared to the weight of the other components. They are the same thing; the only difference being ppm gives a number 10,000 times greater than percentage. Let me quote Wikipedia: ‘At the scientific recording station in Mauna Loa, the concentration reached 0.04% or 400 ppm for the first time in May 2013’. Good discussion, thank you Mr Pullen and Glass House Country News. Des Buchhorn Mooloolah Valley
Trust, what does it mean now?
A couple of years ago the Sunshine Coast Council decided without any research or consultation to do some work along my back fence. I explained to them that what they were doing would not work because of the way the water ran and that all of the road base that they had laid down would end up in my garden. The natural waterway passes through my place down to the lagoons and I had planted my garden around the path of that water. They took no notice and the next lot of rain it happened just as I said that it would, it also started to push down my fence. They sent people out to see the damage and to clear my fence, and this has happened twice more. The water way was completely changed and my garden suffered from being smothered with all the gravel and with the change of water, I lost many of my plants. I had many of the council staff and also one of the councillors come out to see the damage, the last person to come out was the manager of engineering that had given the job the go ahead. She informed 16

This scam has been around for at least five years and they are trying to tap into your computer for bank and/or identity theft, they were silly enough to give me a phone number to call them back which I passed on to the fraud squad. 145 year old bed
Glass House Mountains resident, Ethel Burgess, has in her possession a very significant and tangible reminder of her great grandparents, William and Mary Grigor. For the past 27 years, Ethel has slept in her great grandfather’s heavy wooden four-poster bed. Mary Grigor died in 1900 and William died in 1907. The beautiful Queensland red cedar frame is well preserved and dates back to 1868 when William and Mary Grigor moved into their new house (Bankfoot House) on Old Gympie Road. It is believed the bed was made from timber sourced locally. After the death in 1963 of William and Mary’s youngest daughter, Clementina (Burgess), the bed was passed down to her son Bill Burgess (Ethel’s father). The bed lay unused under their house until 1987. The only renovation required before being brought back into use was a polish. Ethel was able to recreate the canopy and lace drop to return the bed to its original splendour.
University Private Hospital
Recently, I was lucky to have a minor surgery done at this new, hotel like facility. When I arrived for my pre-op consultation, I was able to park right by the front entrance. There is a large car park and the front row was dedicated to people with disability stickers. Being one of those and with only metres to walk, it was great. Then, on the date of my surgery, my son dropped me off and everything proceeded well. The surgery was successful. During the entire time, all staff members were helpful and pleasant. Subsequently, on the following two visits, I was dismayed to find that car park blocked off and empty! When I questioned this on my second visit with the office staff, I was told that it was a management decision. When I asked why, I was told that management wanted everyone to park vehicles in the multi story car park building quite some distance away. Certainly, too far away for any disabled person to walk. Meanwhile, the large number of disabled spaces stand empty and continue to be blocked off. A more patient oriented approach is called for here, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. Please, open that space, even if only for disabled sticker holders. The distance from the car park is much too far for many, if not most disabled people. It is, after all, meant to be a hospital. Tibrogargan target
Did you know that in 1908 the Australian Army proposed the establishment of an artillery firing range in the Glasshouse Mountains? The Railway Department did not object to the firing range as long as a clear space was left between the firing line and the railway line. The Army’s idea was to place large guns on the north western slope of Mt Beerburrum and fire at targets placed on Mt Tibrogargan. Apparently no one thought that firing large shells at Tibrogargan would affect it or the surrounding countryside in any way! Settlers, however, north of the intended range were becoming anxious that their holdings would be in a direct path of the shells. By 1910 the proposal was dropped and considered unviable due to the need for extensive clearing of timber stands on dangerous mountain slopes.

The girls at Beerwah Hair and Beauty are pleased to advise that they will be offering a new Hot Rock massage service starting at the end of February. Available at the salon everyday and delivered by trained therapists, the massage involves an ancient technique that uses specially warmed stones that are carefully positioned on key energy (or Chakra) points of the body to enable deep muscular relief. Each rock used in the therapy has been specially selected and are naturally energised to provide a blissful, healing energy that translates into a heavenly relaxing massage. This one hour treatment will be sure to sooth and heal as the warmed muscles are then expertly integrated into a full body massage using essential oils. Some benefits attributed to this type of massage can include stress reduction, neck and back pain relief and deep relaxation.

Living Health Matters with Braxton Turnage
Health: Three parts of the pie The crust, the filling, and the topping. If only that were the case! Unfortunately, better health has little to do with actual pie. But if we want our bodies to look and feel great, we should look after our physical, nutritional and emotional health. I know what you're thinking. ‘Whew! I have to address three areas in order to be healthy....that's too much effort!’ But when you think about it, you're already eating and you're already thinking – let's just do it better! Since we're already eating, we may as well eat clean, nutritious foods. It has been said that humans are now overfed, but undernourished. Have you ever wondered why some of us are always hungry, even though we're eating all the time? Because our brain knows we need nutrients and will continue to send the hunger message until the nutrients are supplied. So next time you get the feeling of hunger, recognise that your body is asking for nutrients. Veggies, fruits, nuts, and small amounts of meat / fish will give you the nutrients your body is asking for. And since we're already thinking, why not think positively? We all have things in our lives that are not going well, but we also all have things to be grateful for. When we focus on the negative, it leaves us feeling depressed, anxious, unmotivated, and unhappy. While it can be very hard to get out of a ‘rut’, choosing an ‘attitude of gratitude’ can help us through it. Exercise is the only ‘extra’ thing we need to do, and there's no way around it other than taking the first step. Find some form of exercise that is enjoyable, and get moving. Our bodies require it! So treat yourself to actual pie from time to time, but make sure to look after your physical, nutritional, and emotional health on a regular basis. You'll thank yourself for it! The adventures of Milo By Anne Snell They say adventure starts where your comfort zone ends. Most of us never venture more than a step outside of that zone which is just common sense. Lorraine Wise was dragged out of hers by a diagnosis of breast cancer. Her comfortable life was gone, but a new one was about to begin. Smacked in the face with her own mortality, Lorraine and her husband Mike decided it was time to get on and do the things they had always wanted to do. They left their jobs, sold their home in Brisbane, bought a caravan and a four wheel drive vehicle, and hit the road. They became Milo - Mi for Mike and lo for Lorraine. After a settling in period to see if they could actually manage life together in a small space, they set off on their journey. Lorraine’s treatment was fitted into their schedule and so began a new chapter in their lives. To date they have been travelling for eight years and covered vast areas of our country. Between them they have four children and seven grandchildren who all live between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast so it was inevitable that after a couple of years of travelling they bought a beautiful property in Beerburrum as a base camp. This hasn’t slowed down the travels, and neither of them is keen to stop any time soon. Lorraine has written a book about their travels, called ‘Fingers Crossed Across Australia.’ Like many cancer survivors, she wants to give something back, so she is donating the proceeds from this book to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Australia’s leading community based organisation dedicated to supporting high quality research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer. Chatting with them at their Beerburrum home the stories tumbled out – of wonderful places and fabulous people met along the way. Each had their special memories and favourite places, from the Simpson Desert to the Buccaneer Archipelago, the fishing in the far north to the wildflowers of WA. One that tickled my fancy was a visit to a station called Spring Creek, south of Kununurra. They popped in for a quick visit and stayed for two months. The station manager needed some help, so Mike found himself mustering on horseback. He was not a novice horseman but he was nursing an artificial hip so that made things interesting to say the least. Goodbye comfort zone.
Lorraine became the cook for the team, and the memory of that had them both grinning. They continue to make new memories and enjoy life……. So if the idea of outback travel appeals to you, or even if you are more of an armchair adventurer, this book will be a good read, and you will be helping raise much-needed funds for a great cause. Please visit their website at www.milowise. com where you can purchase the book online.

Community Grants – let’s get our share
Council has three diverse grant funding programs open for application and your organisation, event, activity or program may be eligible for funding. A heartfelt reminder to local residents to apply for a Community Grant, Regional Arts Development Fund or Landholder Environment Grant and attract our share of funding to this part of the region. It’s a good opportunity for projects that align to outcomes in the areas of community development, cultural development, cultural heritage, economic development, environment, festive season or healthy living. Council grants officers are incredibly helpful with helping to make your idea a project that’s competitive - for more information or to find out if your project is eligible, contact 5475 7272.

The Landsborough community will have noticed that Council has started construction on the final stage of work at the Skippy Park playground. A custom made slide will be a feature play element to encourage physical play and a spirit of adventure through the thrill of a four metre slide down the embankment. The scale and type of play elements at Skippy Park are designed to encourage inventive play and physical recreation, creating a distinctively different play experience to our other excellent parks. Skippy Park is being developed as a signature playground with both traditional and modern play elements that will ensure our division and Landsborough is an exciting destination for families and friends to gather, socialise and play. The play area is due for completion closer to Easter, depending on weather conditions between now and then.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Pavement repairs
Council will be undertaking important works this month along Ratcliffe Road in Diamond Valley following the extreme wet weather in recent years causing minor landslips and an exceptionally rough pavement surface. Works are scheduled to be completed by the end of February (weather permitting) and will result in a smoother pavement surface and a gentler gradient which will assist with vehicle access and improve sight distances.
Improvements to our local lakes
Residents may be interested to check out the new Recreation Guides for Lake Baroon and Ewen Maddock Dam which the state government has just released. Seqwater has also released the Recreation Management Plan for these lakes. Council, along with recreation users and the broader community, were involved in the community consultation about what recreational opportunities we would like to see on and around these lakes. To download a copy of the Recreation Management Plan and Recreation Guides for these two lakes, including outcomes of the review and implementation timeframes, please visit the Seqwater website.

As part of the Open Gardens Australia scheme, a new garden in Caboolture has been thrown open to the general public – Dreamweaver Garden. Owners Julie and Alan Milner have created a beautiful creek-side oasis on their large block not far from the centre of Caboolture. “The front area of our garden we call the ‘Secret Garden', said Julie. “Just a few years ago it was very overgrown and obscured from view. After much pruning and mulching we began to create the garden using Brazilian Cherry tree hedges and an arbour of Petrea (Queen’s Wreath). “The ‘Secret Garden’ leads onto the original part of the garden which we began working on more than 10 years ago. “The large palms and Camellias and other mature trees were here when we arrived but there was no structure to the garden. “We have added garden beds and filled them with Gardenias, Bromeliads and lots of other plant varieties. “This garden is very much a mixed bag with lots of trial and error to discover what grows well next to established palm trees. This space is also home to our chickens that provide us with wonderful fresh eggs and fertiliser for our variety of fruit trees,” she said. From this area you move to the backyard where they have constructed walkways down to the creek with a viewing deck and entertaining area. This garden is filled with more tropical style plantings of cordylines, gingers and Monstera deliciosa. Hungry bush turkeys, bandicoots and possums also enjoy this garden and as a result only the hardy survive. “To the left of the deck is our most recent project, ‘The Fire Garden’,” said Julie. “Sandstone blocks and rocks provide another wonderful entertainment area with an up cycled fire pit rescued from a factory. “I spend most of my spare hours in the garden. It is my favourite pastime. “Many of our garden ornaments, statues and furniture have been purchased from the council refuse centre or from garage sales and second-hand stores. “We decided to open the garden, so you can enjoy it as much as we have loved creating it. “We would like to think our garden will inspire you to create an oasis of your own, or if you already have one, to carry on your labour of love and keep on gardening.” The garden is situated at 4 Wararba Crescent, Caboolture and is open over the weekend of February 22 and 23 from 10.00am until dusk. Entry is $7.00 with refreshments available and plants for sale.

Eucalyptus microcorys This stringy bark has reddish brown to orange fibrous bark that is spongy and slightly furrowed which persists to the small branches on the tree. Tallowwood can be found from coastal to sub-tropical regions in south east Queensland which means that it grows in a wide variety of soils from moist sands, sandy loams to deep fertile soils. This beautiful forest tree grows to a height of 35-60m and 1-2 metres in diameter. Useful for shade, shelter and ornamental applications, it’s also an excellent wildlife habitat tree that provides an excellent food source for our endangered koalas, and produces good source of pollen for bees and birds. Timber is a hardwood which is extremely durable; it’s used in heavy construction, poles, flooring and decking.

Prepare your finances before applying for a home loan Applying for a home loan is a lot like selling yourself to the lender. You’ve got to convince them that you’re worthy of a mortgage - someone who is trustworthy, reliable and capable of making the necessary repayments on time. When you approach them, it’s important to ensure your financial health is up to scratch. While you may not necessarily understand all the jargon being thrown around the office, as long as you provide the necessary details, you should be in a good position to succeed. www.gcnews.com.au
However, there are a number of ways to help boost your financial standing in the eyes of lenders and other institutions. Evidence of savings Lenders are looking for the type of people who are able to show self-control and restraint with their money. If you’re able to prove to them that you have a long-term, consistent saving plan established, this can reassure them of your suitability for a loan. Not only does this help to prove you’re level-headed and reliable,
but in the event that you are unable to make a repayment for whatever reason, having these savings means you’re in a better position to fulfill your obligation to them. Have a healthy credit rating Taking the time to pay off any outstanding debts and loans, as well as closing any lines of credit that you don’t use, can go a long way towards helping improve your standing in the eyes of a lender. However, every lender has different criteria. So it could be
worth getting in contact with an expert and discussing your options before committing to any one option for the future of your home loan. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Glass House Mountains Community Hall AGM will be held on February 23, from 3.00pm – 4.00pm at the Hall, Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains.
Coochin Creek Bushland Group
Contributed by Roger Callen Field Meetings: 1st Monday and 3rd Friday of each month from 8.30am to 11.30am. The next meetings for this year will be on February 21. All welcome – wear sturdy boots, hat, etc for outside work. Equipment, sunburn cream and insect repellent supplied by council. Council generally supplies morning tea and some protective clothing. Meet at our green sign near the Coochin Creek rock holes at the southern end of Emma Park 2, off Hickory Drive. This year, thanks to a SEQ Catchments group grant, we will be starting an exciting wetland rehabilitation project along the rear and south end of Emma Park 2, with additional planting among the trees at the south end of the park, where a path will connect Hickory Drive to the Rock Holes. GMAN will assist us with some aspects of the project. Council is to supply the path. New members very welcome!

Beerburrum School of Arts Hall
The historic School of Arts Hall at Beerburrum was constructed in 1919 during the time of the Soldier Settlement Scheme. In those early days Anzac Avenue, where the hall is located, was a busy main street, with a blacksmith, state store, bakery, Post Office, boot maker and saddler and boarding house. Today Anzac is a leafy Avenue - thanks to the lovely Camphor laurel trees planted to commemorate the fallen soldiers of WW1, and some of those original buildings still remain including the hall, the bakery and the original Post Office, the latter two now being private homes. The beautifully maintained hall is available for hire for weddings, social functions, meetings, exercise / fitness classes, and is soon to become the home of Kids+Club. For more details contact beerburrumhall@hotmail.com.
Suncoast Women's Adventure Group Women of all ages are invited to get together and find out more about SWAG on Sunday, February 16 at Mooloolaba. The meeting finishes when you run out of things to share and chat about. Wives, partners, family and friends are most welcome

What’s happening at the Museum?
People from businesses around Landsborough are assisting the museum with preparations for the Queensland Heritage Week exhibition from April 14.
Here is Rebecca from Janti Hairdressing with one of the wigs she has restored for us. Which is the model you might ask?

GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY ANGLICAN CHURCH
Ken Goodger Glasshouse Country Anglican Community As a cricket fan, the last three months have been a great joy, with the Australian team winning all but one match against England (and that was a one day international, which isn't proper cricket anyway). As a committed cricket follower, I must admit that I get a bit annoyed by those people who only support our national team when they are winning. When they are losing they often say how bad they are and how they don't deserve support, but when they are winning all of a sudden everyone is suddenly a fan again. This is probably human nature to support success, but it can often be a problem when people or groups who deserve our support on an ongoing basis aren't as successful as we would want from them. Family members, friends or work colleagues who are not perhaps meeting our expectations can often lose our support until they decide to do as we feel they should. The problem for us is that people often don't measure up to our expectations of them. And it is often at times when people are disappointing us most that they are most in need of our love and

support. I'm sure all of us can think of someone in our lives who is causing us grief or disappointment at the moment. Should we be walking away from them at this time, or should we be giving them the support they need to get through their own difficult time? And if we do provide them with that support and love, we might just help them through that difficult time and in the process help us to overcome our negative feelings towards that person. Perhaps they won't respond, but we can only take the opportunity and chance to make a positive contribution to someone's life who is causing us some sadness at the moment. Perhaps like the Aussie cricket team, they might come through and give us a sense of real joy in their success. God Bless

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Maleny Swim Club
Contributed Jodie Diefenbach The overcast and cooler day in Kingaroy did not stop our swimmers from achieving, yet again, great results. It was Darcy and Sebastian’s first competitive carnival in a 50m pool. Although they only swam 25m, the warm up at 7.30am saw them both swim multiple laps in the 50m pool. Darcy carved up the pool and, at the tender age of six won all of his races, and managed to break a couple of carnival records. Sebastian was close on his heels coming 2nd in all of his events. Today we saw a total of 14 PBs with the best
Junior Tennis starting soon achievement going to Angelina with a massive 35.28s off her last PB for 100m breaststroke. Well done Angel! It was Lochie’s first competitive carnival in a 50m pool, but this did not stop him! He came home with five bronze medals. Terrific effort Lochie. Jacob, Danica and Macale also came home with medals, with Jacob earning two bronze, Macale a gold and a bronze and Danica two bronze and two silver. Danica was also the 12-year-old girl Age Champion due to competing in all 4 x 100m events and scoring points in each. Well done Danica.
Lochie, Jacob, Macale and Danica qualified for the Wide Bay Championships to be held in Bundaberg in March and we wish them all the best

On the first day of school, the children brought gifts for their teacher. The supermarket manager's daughter brought the teacher a basket of assorted fruit. The florist's son brought the teacher a bouquet of flowers. The lolly store owner's daughter gave the teacher a pretty box of chocolates. Then the liquor-store owner's son brought up a big, heavy box. The teacher lifted it up and
noticed that it was leaking a little bit. She touched a drop of the liquid with her finger and tasted it. "Is it wine?" she guessed. "No," the boy replied. She tasted another drop, and asked, "champagne?" "No," said the little boy............."It's a puppy!" K. Baker Glass House Mountains

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This full Moon in Leo, this weekend, could bring a decision to team up with a friend, group, or organisation. Support is assured, so you can put a goal into action and overcome a current limitation. With Mercury retrograde overhead, some animals or pets, even computers, may start to develop strange symptoms. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 For some Scorpios, the return of Mercury back into Aquarius, puts some stress on your Valentine’s weekend, around February 12 to 14. You may find colleagues under stress may box you in. At the end of the month, foundations which have been laid over the past few weeks for new projects will get the green light for go! SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The full Moon is in the fire sign of Leo. Various groups or associations you are fond of, may force you to adjust philosophies and points of view to meet new conditions. Some students and travellers will face challenges under Mercury retrograde since many plans fall under foggy illusions. An exciting experience. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Valentine’s Day weekend, mid-month, falls across your financial axis, creating emotional stress when attending to an urgent money matter, ahead of your personal romantic issues. Swift confident action shows a courageous way through problems. There is a new revelation re: shared funds and / or partner’s finances.

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This week sees more energy in air signs, such as yours. So you might find yourself battling crusades, heralding beliefs, or coping with delays and mix ups in travel or education plans. If you want a happy Valentine’s Day make sure your appointments and connections are crystal clear. The theme is ‘revisit and review’. CANCER June 22 – July 22 The full Moon lights up your money sector and that could mean splurging on a Valentine’s Day present. As this full Moon is on a weekend, double check your seating arrangements for theatre bookings as mistakes can be made under a Mercury retrograde. Try now to avoid drinking with contentious people. LEO July 23 – August 22 It’s a week when you may start to rehash old issues with partners in love and or business. Certain planets are giving Leo’s frustrating power struggles, many with resistance, jealousy or suspicion. The best policy is to retreat and rethink decisions, moving forward once again after February 28. Act confidently now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This full Moon in Leo on the weekend sees another indication that you will find balance between daily tasks and health renewal. Be inspired to shop with purchases of bright colours such as orange and golden shades. Be on the lookout for your lucky flowers, especially orchids or water lilies. Happy connections.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Mercury in its retrograde movement returns to Aquarius on February 12 and this planet may play havoc with Valentine’s Day weekend. It may be because you are physically or professionally drained and you don’t wish to have a riotous Valentine’s Day excursion. A close partner gives a special gift now. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The Valentine’s Day weekend on February 14 brings you fulfilment of the needs of the mind, body and soul. This may come from intimate connections from others. There is a positive channel opening up with deep psychic forces that expands your understanding of mysterious, impressive forces now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week Mercury in its reverse movement returns to the sign of Aquarius on February 12 and won’t move in its direct orbit until the end of this month. You may face old issues with a former friend that may leave you unsettled. Memories of old friendships that came before might haunt the present couple of weeks. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Mercury returns to Aquarius this week, shining its light on professional matters that may need another look. Double check appointments and travel plans. The full Moon at the weekend comes at Valentine’s Day and may coax a lot of support and affection. You see disruptive behaviour in professional conversations.
