CABOOLTURE

Hi Everyone

L

ast week I received a photo to go with an item in Cr McKay’s column (Councillor for Mooloolah) – I took one look at the photo and just said wow that’s a front pager. Actually I thought it would also make an excellent shot to run a ‘caption competition’ with, however I was happy to go with ‘Councillor out on a limb’. I reckon that there are plenty of other captions that would probably have been better – and while the photo is about a project that will possibly go into Montville – I figured that plenty of our adventurist locals would quite like to know about a fancy zip-line almost in our back yard.

Vicious graffiti attack

Local Beerwah couple Brendan and Sarah Ovens where shocked last Wednesday morning when they awoke and discovered that they had been the victims of a nasty and very personal graffiti attack on their property in Peachester Road.

Sarah cannot believe that after living quietly in the community for the past 18 months that they would be on the receiving end of such a vicious and personal attack.

Ph. Daryl 0417 740 058 5494 6943 (a/h)

She noticed the graffiti on their driveway at 5.30am in the morning and immediately reported it to the police, who attended the scene that morning and are now investigating the serious offence of wilful damage. While a friend, neighbour and family rallied around them and removed the graffiti as quickly as possible, the couple are devastated that anyone who walked past their property that morning would have been confronted with the offensive graffiti. Before moving to Beerwah, Brendan served in the Australian Army where he did three tours of duty overseas and is highly decorated. Since moving to Beerwah, Brendan has become involved in the local community and is a volunteer with the Rural Fire Service.

Brendan said there is no truth to any of the claims in the graffiti and he cannot think why he would be personally targeted in this way. He is upset at how the incident has caused distress for his family.

Sunshine Coast Council has again been recognised for its unique consultation and planning process for the PLACE+ Beerwah project, receiving the prestigious ‘Award of Excellence for Planning in Landscape Architecture’ at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architect (AILA) awards. The award follows council’s ‘Towards Best Practice Award’ from the Place Leaders Association. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the extensive community engagement provided residents an opportunity to reflect carefully on the future of the town and its role as a major activity centre. “Congratulations must go to all involved in PLACE+ Beerwah – this award highlights the extensive work from council and the community in laying broad community-led foundations to substantially improve the face of Beerwah,” Cr Baberowski said. Council has now completed the community engagement phase for the Draft Simpson and Mawhinney Street concept plans. Based on community feedback, council will finalise the plans and start detailed design, with construction scheduled to start in the 2013-2014 financial year. Council will continue to develop the overall Masterplan for Beerwah to capture the community's vision and set the standard for future private and public development. The Overall Public Domain Masterplan was scheduled for completion in June 2013.

However, it now appears that there is no set timeframe for its delivery as the coming 2013 / 14 Council budget is yet to be delivered and, according to Council staff, this may change the overall project resourcing. Key objectives for the upgrade of Simpson and Mawhinney Streets include: • Kerb realignment creating seating and outdoor dining areas, with provision for shade trees and garden bed planting • Raised pedestrian crossings creating traffic calming and a low speed environment • Active open space and civic areas supporting a vibrant town centre • Shared pedestrian / cycle pathway network with end of trip facilities • Landscape palette reflecting Beerwah’s mountain setting and past stories of traditional owners, farming and rail history Council has scheduled a capital funding allocation of $3 million for construction; with $1 million allocated in 2013 / 14 for stage one and a further $2 million in 2014 / 15 for stage 2. With the Council holding their budget adoption meeting on June 25, GCNews will bring you more details then as to what has been allocated for this project – as well as for other projects in the region.

Are Headaches Robbing You of the Life You Deserve? Are recurring headaches controlling your life? Day after day of missing out on things, or just being miserable, irritable and looking much older than you really are?

Recurring headaches are not normal! While headaches are terribly common, they are NOT normal. The normal condition of the human body is vibrant and healthy...not tired and painful! Pain is our body’s alarm system that something is wrong. So – if you often say “It feels like my head is in a vice”, or “I’ve had migraines since puberty” or “My neck and shoulders are always tight and tense” and you just want to go and lie down - then pay close attention now. Four major causes of headaches are dehydration, stress, food intolerance, and neck subluxations. And each of these causes has a path to relief. The most little known is neck subluxation. Can this help your headaches? Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. Upper neck subluxations very commonly cause ‘Cervicogenic Headaches’. This type of headache presents with neck stiffness and pain at the base of your skull, which can sometimes radiate through to your eyes. Drugs can reduce the symptoms (turn off the body’s alarm) for a while, but they do not correct the cause – and the symptoms return. Many studies have shown the benefits of treating the neck subluxations of headache sufferers, including the Boline and Duke Studies. If you are having headaches something is wrong. Chiropractic is a safe and effective form of healthcare that treats a major cause of headaches, the Subluxation. Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if your headaches are a good fit for our very successful Headache Relief Program. Locals help shape Queensland future In early May, the State Government gathered over 400 people together from every corner of Queensland and from all walks of life, to talk about the future and our shared visions for the next 30 years. Locally, state members Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell each took three delegates to Mackay. Two of those – Trish Cashin and Ursula Starkovski – have shared with us their experiences of the process, their thoughts on the outcomes and their optimism for the future. Trish is the manager of Beerwah Community Recycling Inc and is well known locally for her fantastic support of community groups, projects and events. She welcomed the opportunity of being asked by Mark McArdle to be a part of the Mackay summit stage of developing the Queensland Plan. “I am very grateful to have had the chance to take part and to contribute towards the 30 year plan for our State,” she said. “The whole process was remarkable and the discussions hinged around six global ‘megatrends’ which the CSIRO presented to the summit. “These are the major issues which will impact upon our future and will change the way in which we live. “With this knowledge, we can then start to build a stronger footing for our future,” said Trish. Ursula – who was invited by Andrew Powell to attend the summit – ran her own real estate business in Beerwah for many years (About Real Estate) and now is a key member of the team at First National Real Estate, Beerwah.

Trish Cashin and Ursula Starkovsky Ursula was taken by the sheer diversity of the delegates. “There were students, mayors, people from small islands and remote communities – as well as real estate agents. The atmosphere of cooperative effort was wonderful,” she said. “It was a truly democratic event, where everybody’s voice – no matter where you came from or what your background was – could have an impact in shaping our State’s future. “The challenge for the participants was to establish a set of questions about our future which would then become the basis for communities across Queensland to have open discussions about where they see our future needs to head,” explained Ursula. From the Mackay summit, six questions were fashioned designed to stimulate conversations that focus on important challenges and opportunities, the result of which will be a 30 year vision for Queensland. This vision will then inform how we plan for the future.

Independent Grocers of Australia

By Greg Brown

The questions are: 1. In the context of living in the community, how do we move our focus from me to we? 2. How do we create and foster an education culture that teaches skills and values to meet global challenges and optimise regional strengths? 3. How do we empower and educate individuals, communities and institutions to embrace responsibility for an active and healthy lifestyle? 4. How do we structure our economy to ensure our children inherit a resilient future? 5. How do we strengthen our economic future and achieve sustainable landscapes? 6. How do we attract and retain the brightest minds and ideas where they are most needed and capitalise on global opportunities? From now until August, the government want us all to have our say and provide our thoughts and ideas to help make sure the Queensland Plan is reflective of how we see our future. “This is your opportunity to have an input into the future planning to ensure Queensland’s future is bright, strong and united,” said Trish. “Let’s take charge and make this great State a good place to live now and in 30 years’ time,” said Ursula. Both Trish and Ursula are more than happy to speak to local groups on the summit and the six questions posed. Just contact them – Trish 5494 6798 or communityrecycling@bigpond. com, or Ursula on ursulas@gcfn.com.au To find out more or to make a submission online, go to the Queensland Plan website www. queenslandplan.qld.gov.au

Extending from Caloundra to the southern tip of Bribie Island; a protected natural environment, international site for at risk migratory birdlife, and an important part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park, the Passage is unique in Australia, and globally significant. However, over the last 10 years, the condition of the Pumicestone Passage (as measured through the Healthy Waterways Report card process) has dropped from an admirable A-minus to be rated at a low C-minus. This isn’t good enough, says Ken Mewburn from Take Action for Pumicestone Passage (TAPP), a community group set up to help protect the area. “Many who live and visit here love the Passage and are aware of the importance of responsible custodianship. “Increased demand is putting the waterway under severe pressure. We see an opportunity to get things right now before that demand increases further,” he said. TAPP believes expanded demand, due to population increase and projected growth in the region, including an additional 50,000 residents proposed for Caloundra South, will damage the ecology and the landscape beyond repair.

CORRECTION

BP Landsborough would like to advise all our customers that the advertisement in last week’s GCNews contained an incorrect item.

Last Wednesday – which was World Environment Day – TAPP launched a petition they hope will help secure the Passage for the future. Ken says this increased use, especially by jet skis and other motorised craft is having a severe effect, which is unable to be managed effectively by resources currently provided by government. “Jet skis disturb migratory birds using the waterway to rest and restore strength for the return flight 10,000 km north,” Ken said. “The Water Police and Rangers have insufficient resources to properly address adequate infringement action.” TAPP’s petition asks the Queensland Government to take immediate action to develop, fund and implement a Management Plan to protect the ecology and address safety on the waterway. The public can sign the petitions on-line (see their website for details) or at MP Mark McArdle’s Bulcock Street, Caloundra office, and you can find updates of petition locations by visiting the TAPP website www.protectpumicestonepassage.com

Bankfoot House Booklet

The Friends of Bankfoot House have recently completed a booklet describing the historical origins of the heritage-listed residence as well as information on the three generations of the families who lived at Bankfoot House for a period of over 130 years. The booklet, currently in production, also contains many family photos some of which date back to the 1890s when William and Mary Grigor ran the Cobb & Co Coach lunch stop on Old Gympie Road and the Glasshouse Mountains’ only accommodation house. Many anecdotes, previously unpublished, have been collected from descendants and other district residents in order to provide a flavor of what life was like in the Glasshouse Mountains in days gone by. For example Bill Ferris recalls that after the Second World War (1939-45) you could buy silk parachutes very cheaply from the army disposal stores. Silk was unavailable for a long period of time, due to the rationing of materials and goods, and the ladies were buying up parachutes to make underwear and ball gowns etc. Bill said his mother, Mary Ferris, was a very good seamstress. The back fence to the Bankfoot House property was constructed by Bill’s father Jack Ferris in the mid-1960s.

The Friends of Bankfoot House will be available at Bankfoot House toward the end of the month Timber for the fence posts came from a tree growing alongside Old Gympie Road. Jack felled the tree and split all the fence posts himself. Can you imagine the repercussions this would cause today! Following an official launch on Sunday, June 16, the booklet is expected to be on sale at Bankfoot House towards the end of the month. For further information contact Friends of Bankfoot House, phone 5493 0197, Email friends@bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder – President – 0407 760 989, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council.

If you are interested in joining the Friends of Bankfoot House, phone 5493 0197 on Wednesday, or contact the President Ron Gillinder on 0407 760 989. Email friends@bankfoothouse.org to find out more check out the website www.bankfoothouse.org

Kev’s french horn is a perfect match for Strauss Last Wednesday night, Glass House Mountains local Kev Radford and his french horn attended the first orchestral rehearsal for The Maleny Singers, who open with their 10th anniversary production of ‘Die Fledermaus’ by Strauss on June 21. Kev and his wife have been stepping up to the challenges presented by The Maleny Singers Artistic Director, Margaret Taylor for the last five years, since the formation of the Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra in 2008. The Maleny Singers have regularly brought to the stage classical operettas by such renowned composers as Gilbert and Sullivan, Franz Lehár and Offenbach. Johann Strauss — affectionately known as 'The Waltz King' - brings this farce to life with wonderful wit and melodies such as ‘The laughing song’, that are so well known by young and old. The performances of Die Fledermaus will take place at the newly renovated Maleny Community Centre, commencing June 21, 6.30pm (Gala Night). Matinees will be held on June 23 2.00pm, June 29 - 4.00pm, and June 30 – 2.00pm. A second evening performance will be

Local tradie swaps the tools for a keyboard

Beerwah NHWQ Meeting

For local tradesman David Benson, dropping the tools and returning to the classroom was not a decision that was taken lightly. After spending several years installing industrial air conditioning into hospitals and shopping centres, David decided the time was right to apply to university. “I had only planned on doing construction for a little while to save up money to do other things like travel, but week to week I saw myself becoming further imbedded into a job I didn't want to take further. “I enjoyed the money and the short term benefits, so the decision to leave to study was one I put a lot of thought in to,” he said Like many students that return to the classroom as adult learners, David spent a long time pondering his future and was anxious about what might lay ahead at uni. “The costs, the fact that I hadn't been to school in over 10 years and the idea that only smart people go to uni were all things that concerned me. “But after having a chat with the staff at QUT, I found the answers I was looking for and realised that I could apply and in fact succeed

At the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ held on June 3, our speaker was Lea Parkes, the Editor and Proprietor of Glasshouse Country News. Lea gave us a lively and informative account of how she came to own the paper and some of the facets of running it. The photo shows Lea in front of the ‘Good Neighbour Award’ shield, which was given to us by Glasshouse Country News. Unfortunately, the June recipients of the ‘Good Neighbour Award’, John and Pam Innes, were unable to be present; they will receive their award at our August meeting. One of the items we discussed was the important one of the future of Neighbourhood Watch. Too many branches are in the same predicament as ours---the committee members ageing with no new volunteers appearing. A recent discussion paper put out by Head Office suggests that one way of overcoming this would be to move to a more on-line presence. This will be discussed further at our August meeting. Anyone looking for interesting volunteer work is urged to contact us. Sheila Williams (secretary, 5439 0520, e-mail swilli17@dodo.com.au.)

at university,” he said. He eventually decided to enrol in the Bachelor of Creative Industries at QUT Caboolture and aims to start a career in web design and web development at the end of his degree. With six months of study under his belt, David hopes his story can inspire others and believes the best piece of advice he can pass on is a simple one. “It's not too late to give yourself a better future,” he said. If you are interested in returning to study, QUT is hosting Return to Study Seminars at the North Lakes Golf Club on June 17 and QUT Caboolture on June 20. For more information or to register your attendance, visit www.qut.edu.au/study/events or email cabevents@qut.edu.au

Winner of Mini bike donates it to Charity Sports Matilda Service Station recently ran a really popular prize draw with the lucky winner receiving a battery operated Mini Bike that can be charged for 40 hours of use. Unfortunately the winner Janine Hinds lives in Perth, so won’t be able to pick it up, but fortunately for the Beerwah Charity Sports Day she is happy for Matilda to give it to them for re-raffling. Janine was on holiday here when

she entered the competition and is a motorbike rider so was happy for a young local to end up being able to enjoy the bike.

Sm When we decided to place a special full page promo with Glasshouse Country News, we hoped it would spark some increased sales. But we were really amazed at the response once the paper hit the streets. We promoted our new service as a second hand gold and silver dealer and immediately we had phone calls, walk-ins and new faces contacting us, which has been fantastic. We had tried mail-outs and catalogues, but by far our full page promo ad in GC News worked the best. Tania and Glenn Smileys Jewellers

As a new business owner, I’ve been blown away by the friendliness and big welcome of the locals. From the moment the Glasshouse Country News came out, the response we got 5496 9255 from our full page promo ad was fantastic. Everyone who came through the door commented on seeing it. They loved the photos and also finding out about us; they really enjoyed the lovely story. It has definitely bought in new customers who haven’t been in for years – we seem to have rekindled the village butcher spirit, and the GCNews promo certainly was a helping hand in that. Gear up for all those first home loan costs!

of the value of a property then you will more than likely be required to purchase Lenders Mortgage Insurance.

If you are gearing up for a first home loan then front of mind will be the need to save a deposit and be financially prepared to take on this significant commitment.

More likely, you’ll find a place with potential and that you start working on in your head from the moment you first lay eyes on it.

This is a one-off payment which provides cover to your lender in the event that you are unable to cover your loan repayment obligations.

Remember that the floor won’t sand itself and the deck certainly won’t paint itself - you’ll need some funds on hand to make those improvements once you’re the keyholder!

It is also a good idea to consider life insurance!

Here are some other things to think about!

Stamp duty Don’t forget this fella! Stamp duty is paid by the buyer on any property For many, this translates to months of purchase. This varies from state to state, tunnel vision and saving for that big old so make sure you find out how much deposit. you’ll need to pay where you intend on And nothing could be better! The bigger buying. the deposit you save, the less you’ll The good news is that many states offer need to borrow and the more you will stamp duty discounts to first home save on interest over the term of your buyers - don’t miss out on these if you loan. are eligible! Yet that is not the only mortgage expense to think about when you’re about to dip your toe in the property market for the first time. www.gcnews.com.au

Insurance Lenders will require you to take out home and contents insurance as part of the eligibility requirements for your first home loan.

Initial work It is rare that the first house you buy That’s not the only insurance you will will be an exact match with the property need to think about, however, as if you of your dreams. are borrowing more than 80 per cent

Tech Time IT News with Gus

Web Review with Ben

Installing updates

Be responsive, not broke!

Users of PC’s, Mac’s, iPhone / iPad’s, and Android’s etc are constantly being reminded or prompted to install updates. These could be for printers, PC Security, Operating System (Windows / Mac / ios / Android) Adobe Reader / Flash / Air, Java, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and on it goes. The old adage ‘If it ain’t broke don’t fix it' does not always apply with regards to your tech device!

The latest figures are out and it’s official almost half of all internet usage is coming through mobile devices. In some categories, such as Maps and Navigation, this figure is as high as 84 per cent. Our mobile phone is no longer just our landline substitute; it is now our source of multimedia, entertainment, games, social media, phone directory info, maps and navigation and the list goes on! And of course tablet devices are quickly becoming the preferred alternative to the good old PC. So where does this leave us as business owners? Do we all need to go out and spend big money on having custom apps built for iPhone, Android and Windows mobile devices? Luckily, the answer is no! First of all, much of our online presence and marketing can be undertaken these days via third party sites such as Google and Facebook, and you can be rest assured that these internet giants will be keeping up with the latest technologies, so that you don’t have to. Your accounts with these providers will continue to serve your business despite the constant technological advances going on around us. Similarly, there is no need to go scrapping your business website - your site can be adjusted to become 'responsive', meaning that it will automatically resize to suit whatever mobile device comes its way. Too much info and functionality on your site to suit a mobile device? Not to worry, a 'mobile friendly' landing page can easily be added, so that a mobile device user will be redirected to a simpler, cut down version just perfect for the phone. Statistics sourced from www.comscore.com

Operating System Updates often come from the need to block security holes, but can also improve the way your system performs. Although occasionally these updates can cause systems to fail, we do recommend keeping your Operating System up-to-date. For Windows XP owners, this will come to a grinding halt on the 8th of April 2014; also Office 2003 is in for the same abandonment. This doesn’t mean you have to stop using them, it just means there will be no more support from Microsoft. If you’re running XP and office 2003, you will still be using great software. It’s lucky car companies don’t take the same attitude with their vehicles once they are over 10 years old! Windows 8 remains very unpopular with many of our clients whose new Laptop / PC’s came with this latest Microsoft offering. So in the case of people considering upgrades to Windows 8, our best advice is 'If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it'! Stick with what you have unless it needs replacing. Windows XP is a great operating system, far more user-friendly than Windows 8, and far more reliable than Windows Vista. Office 2003 still produces documents and spread sheets, so don’t feel pressured into upgrading. Final Tip: For other downloads, it is very wise to keep security up to date, as well as Adobe and Java installations. And last but not least, if your printer is working fine, then you don’t usually need to download printer updates.

Tough times for Small Business and it could get tougher The past six months has seen considerable changes being planned for the Glasshouse Country Communities. Council has two documents shaping the future of the Sunshine Coast. The most significant document which has been prepared and is now available for a short period of community consultation, it is the Draft Economic Development Strategy (EDS). The EDS will have a considerable impact on the final Draft Planning Scheme which was published and presented for public consultation in 2012, attracting around 2,500 submissions from the whole of the Sunshine Coast. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce prepared a comprehensive submission, highlighting the concerns and identifying those which would affect local small business and the services provided to local residents. The communities west of the Bruce Highway have seen a steady growth during the period of the present Caloundra City Plan. This will stop under the new scheme, it will also reduce the services you are entitled to and have come to expect. Small Business requires growth to survive! The EDS document is designed to set the future direction for the economic strength to grow the Sunshine Coast, building to 2033. Submissions to this draft are to be supplied to council by mid June. The chamber will be facilitating an information evening on Wednesday, June 19. The presenters will be from business and council, who were members of the taskforce that worked on the EDS from late 2012. This strategy is intended by the mayor to drive the new Planning Scheme. The Glasshouse Country Business community has been fortunate to secure these members of the taskforce to outline the background in developing the EDS and to answer your questions on the lack of vision for the Hinterland communities. The future of your community and your business is dependent on these two documents. Visit Sunshine Coast Council website http://www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to review and have your say. If you are operating a business on the Sunshine Coast this is the most important two hours you can invest in your business.

Critical Business Event Make sure you have your say on the Draft Sunshine Coast Economic Development Strategy When: Wednesday, June 19 from 5.30pm – 7.30pm Where: Beerwah Hotel Cost: Free entry, light snacks provided, drinks must be purchased RSVP: by 4.00 PM 17th June to reception@gcnews.com.au or phone 5438 7445 See page 23 for more information media partner of Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce

School News Beerwah State School’s Chess Team

Contributed by Dianne Moss The Suncoast Chess Tournament was held recently at Lake Kawana Community Centre. Several schools from all over the coast were represented, as well as individual entries. It was a well organised event and all students were very enthusiastic. We had two teams participate in the Novice Category. Our chess students modelled excellent ‘Kandoo’ Beerwah team spirit and behaviours. It was our first time entering a chess tournament and our club is still in formative stages, but all followed protocols of the game, shaking the hands of opponents, congratulating on a great game regardless of win or loss and showing respect and manners to each other and to students from other schools.

Thanks for your support

Landsborough Community Kindergarten would like to thank everyone for supporting our 21st Annual Cent Auction. A great night was had by all who attended. As we are only partly government funded, we rely greatly on support from the community. Thank you to all the local businesses who donated prizes - without your generosity this event would not be possible. Also, thank you to everyone who came along, many who do so every year. We hope you had fun and went home with some great prizes! All proceeds from the night will be used towards purchasing educational resources and equipment for the Kindergarten. The children of Landsborough Kindy say thanks for supporting their recent Cent Auction

Pyjamas the order of the day The children at Landsborough Child Care Centre celebrated the recent cold snap by enjoying Pyjama Day! Yep we stayed in our pj's all day! The children enjoyed lots of fun activities such as musical mattresses, pin the pillow on the bed, hide ‘n go sleep and lots of art and craft! After all of the fun activities they settled in and enjoyed popcorn and a movie to really make the most of their day! Jordan, Aaron, Harley, Brodie, Paige, Sophie and Bayley (front)

Fabulous Fifties at GCCC

Special guests were treated to a fabulous lunch in the style of a fifties diner at Glasshouse Country Christian College this week. The fifties feast was the culmination of a two term assessment piece by Year 10 Hospitality students. In term one, students had to design a café style of their choice, build a website for it, design the menu, and create a logo. Term 2 became more hands-on as students learned barista skills, made non-alcoholic beverages and honed their food preparation and serving expertise. On the last day of assessment, Year 10 wait staff dressed up in fifties clothes complete with pony tails and poodle skirts and served frothy milkshakes, cupcakes, butterfly sponges and mini canapés. GCCC’s Head of Hospitality, Miss Colleen Devitt, was very pleased with the final result. “The students worked hard and learnt about running a café as a whole business rather than just the food preparation,” she said. “These skills are invaluable for students choosing the Hospitality industry for their career.” Year 10 GCCC Hospitality students Monique Newell and Callista Theron serve milkshakes and ginger beer at their instant fifties kitchen.

All this and more in Year 7...

Australian Native Bees Most people associate bees with the stinging introduced bee, that produces delicious honey found in our kitchens. However Australia has 1,500 species of native bees, including 10 that produce small amounts of honey, which was a food much sought after by both Aboriginal people and early settlers. I remember eating the honey as a child and it has a delicious, rather strong flavour compared to honey from the introduced bee. Honey producing native bees are social bees which live in colonies with a queen, drones and workers, usually in a hollow tree limb. These bees are very small and efficient pollinators of our flowering plants and food crops. You may have seen the small insects in your vegetable garden especially on flowering herbs, or native flowers like grevilleas, banksias and in particular grass tree spikes. Like many of our fauna, native bees have suffered loss of their ‘homes’ due to clearing of dead trees or those with hollows. However they will utilise fauna boxes with a small entry and create a hive within, sealing up most of

the entry hole in the process. Most of the other native bees are solitary insects and do not produce honey. Look for the Blue Banded bee seeking pollen in the garden; or the evidence of leaf cutter bees which leave neat circular holes in the leaves of some plants! These are usually larger than the tiny honey producing bee but are still fascinating members of our natural environment.

Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? For more information on GMAN activities and nursery sales please call Cliff (5438 7118) or Gwen (5493 0029). www.gman-inc.com.au

The ‘Mooloolah Cup’ horse races were held every year on the flood plains on Old Gympie Road and in 1889 Edmund Lander’s son John won the race – the cup is still with the family today. Vicious attack

A fortnight ago last Sunday, our beloved Welsh Mountain Pony, Sparky, was viciously attacked by two Bull Terriers one adult male and one young female. He had been grazing in our back paddock late afternoon when the dogs must have come across him and attacked him by ripping his throat out. The commotion that followed was one of sheer panic and our daughter could not get near Sparky as the adult male was trying to go her as well. When the boys got down to them the dogs backed off and sat calmly like nothing had happened. We have found the owner since and he says they were definitely only domestic dogs and pets, not used for hunting and he himself could not believe what they had done to Sparky. Sparky has been my daughters pet for the whole of his 13 years, and should have been around for another 20. These dogs were intent to kill and only went for his throat; there was no other injury to him. My daughter could only hear a faint neigh from him in the back paddock when she was calling to him to feed him. How he stayed coherent and could even possibly get a neigh out just beats me. When the Vet arrived he said as Sparky had lost all his neck down to the bone and so much blood and had gone into shock there was simply nothing to do for him but put him down. It was the most dreadful thing to see and owners of these dogs should know that they cannot be trusted around domestic animals and Never around young children. We often have two littlies running around here and thank God they were not here on that Sunday afternoon. Sparky was known as my daughter’s beloved Soul mate by friends far and near and will be missed for a long time to come. I need to get the message out that these dogs were just Bull Terrier pets and would never been considered to be a dangerous breed as are other breeds in the news recently. They should be banned from being in and around populated communities as it is in their breed to hunt to kill. There have been so many unprovoked attacks on people all over the country so we need to put in writing to our Local councils to get these dangerous breeds banned before it is a little child that dies from these senseless attacks. We would like to thank our neighbours for their help and also to Graham Lean for arriving so quickly and being compassionate. The Keast Family Glass House Mountains

Another exercise of unnecessary expense

I refer to the resurfacing of a short stretch of old Gympie road, not even one km long at Beerwah, at a cost of almost $400,000. I would have thought the money would have been more wisely spent straitening a very dangerous S bend, corner only 100 metres away or put towards a roundabout or traffic control at the intersection of old Gympie road and Peachester road – no wonder our council is always in the red. Colin Batch Beerwah

Our heartfelt thanks

As President of the Maleny Show Society, it gives me great pleasure to announce that our 76th Maleny Show was a success. Of course this would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts of our hardworking volunteers and staff, as well as the exhibitors who continue to support our events year after year. As one of Maleny’s biggest events, our society enjoys the benefits of a huge membership base, and from these our many volunteers give of their time, some for just one day and others all year round. It humbles me to think so many people still enjoy and patronise our show. On behalf of our executive committee, I thank you all for your efforts, and hope that all of our community groups and sponsors who support our show, also reap the benefits of being involved. I’m sure you will all agree our showgrounds are a vital asset to our town, and without the show, we could not continue to provide such a high quality facility for all to enjoy. So thanks to everyone who was involved this year, and see you all again in 2014. Mr Ivan Hankinson President, Maleny Show Society

What is going on with some tradies? We own a lawn mowing business and respond to all enquiries immediately. Our car has a small dent in the door which needs repair. I have tried several websites for home dent repairs but have had no response back at all. Each time I have sent a follow up e-mail, but still no response. Is there a local dent repair person out there who would like to carry out this work for us? We live in Landsborough. Not sure if our phone number can be published but if not please contact the editor for our details. Hopefully I will be able to write a positive letter about a local tradie as a result. Tony Squire Landsborough

People power

The good news was that grid connected solar power was embraced by Queenslanders, the bad news is that now they are being demonised for taking that step. The solar panels that are on about five per cent of houses in Queensland neither threatens the integrity of the wider power system nor means that these house owners are ‘freeloading’. Thousands responded to the incentives offered by the government and took out a stake in generating electricity for Queensland. It was power by the people for the people. Technology, policy and people came together to provide a desirable outcome – clean energy. John citizens excess power is used by the Jacks and Jill’s – his close neighbours. This clean energy is produced in the community, by the community for the community. Thank you Queenslanders. This being said, the need to maintain an effective power grid is essential and the cost of doing this should be shared equitably. Other countries have resolved this issue without any need to ‘scapegoat’ solar panel owners or to create an ‘us versus them’ situation. Solar panels have nothing to do with the recent price hike of 17 per cent for electricity; other than to perhaps divert attention away from such an exorbitant increase. Queenslanders know better than this and they deserve better. G Winter Mooloolah

What is all the fuss about?

Coming back from Brisbane the other day I spotted Mal Brough's sign and the first thing that I noticed is that it is just about exactly the same as the one over his office in Kawana. I really fail to see what all the fuss is about as clearly it is not an election campaigning sign. I don't think anyone in Kawana has suggested his sign over his office is trying to get votes, so why should the one out here be any different? Linda Johnson Beerwah

Is your precious pet a loved member of your family – one you would never want to see come to any harm? Keeping our cherished animals safe and secure is something that any responsible pet owner wants to ensure. No-one wants to see their faithful companion stressed, injured or worse, resulting from them escaping your yard. Expensive vet bills … stress, anxiety and worry … council pound fees and fines … neighbourhood disputes. These are problems we can all do without. Hidden Fence brand is the only professional grade invisible dog fence containment system in Australia and is engineered to stop any and all breeds from escaping their boundaries and wandering into trouble. Hidden Fence brand's invisible dog fence and electronic dog fence containment systems are an excellent and affordable fencing solution for your dog and cat containment issues. Originally created in America in 1973, Hidden Fence is recommended by animal behaviour vet specialists and is the most trusted company for animal containment fences in Australia. Only Hidden Fence uses a Patented ‘Safelink FM/DM digital signal’ that’s transmitted through a tough polyethylene coated copper boundary wire installed around your property, below ground level or on a fence line. A lightweight, waterproof dog fence receiver collar worn by your pet picks up this harmless signal. And there are no limits to the number of animals you have using the system. When your pet gets close to the desired boundary, an audible warning tone reminds your pet not to cross the boundary. If the warning is ignored, which is rare after training, the collar emits a customised stimulation and prevents your pet from crossing. After the Hidden Fence is installed by their technicians, your pet is then introduced to the fencing system through a training program given by their professional behavioural trainers. The combination of the Hidden Fence and the behavioural training guarantees your pet stays safe at home. The system can also be used to keep your pets away from areas within your backyard. It can keep them from swimming in the pool, getting into your gardens, or away from the washing line.

Poisonous to pets

We all want to make sure that our pets are safe and healthy. We make sure they are healthily fed and well watered. We make sure they are wormed and are protected against fleas and ticks. We make sure they are kept safe and secure at home. We make sure any dangerous chemicals or items are stored well away from their prying paws. But how many of us know there’s a whole range of common garden plants that are considered dangerously poisonous to pets, animals and livestock? Although poisonings and deaths from garden plants is not a common occurrence (thankfully), if a pet is poisoned, it can be unpleasant, painful and potentially fatal for your loved animals. Not to mention, it can cost you a significant amount at the vet for life-saving treatment. Like the old saying goes – prevention is better than cure – so knowing and avoiding some of the main problem plants is something all of us owe to our little furry friends. Duranta (or Sheena’s Gold, Geisha Girl) – the bright orange berries of this shrub are seriously poisonous and have killed dogs and cats. Ribbon Plant (or Spider Ivy) – causes severe vomiting and salivation and will require immediate vet treatment, as was the case not long ago in Toowoomba. Cycad (or Sago Palm) – an Atherton Police dog and a Staffie in Darwin have recently died after chewing on the leaves of this popular landscaping plant. Daffodil (and other bulbs) – dogs in particular will chew or play with them, but chemicals in the bulbs can cause severe seizures, vomiting and diarrhoea. Deaths have been recorded. Begonia – it can cause real problems if eaten – including throat swelling making breathing difficult, burning of the mouth, vomiting and hallucinations. Brunsfelsia (or Yesterday Today Tomorrow) – all parts of the plant are poisonous, but the berries are more so – remove them if they develop. Symptoms are vomiting, muscle tremors, loss of coordination, increased urination and hypothermia. Mint – this common herb can cause organ failure and death in dogs and cats. Pennyroyal is the most toxic type of mint. Grapes – if you grow grapes, be very aware that they are deadly for dogs – this includes dried grapes such as raisins and sultanas. Sacred Bamboo (or Nandina) – the young leaves and red berries can lead to seizures and the animal falling into a coma. Hydrangea – eating hydrangea leaves or flowers will result in the animal getting diarrhoea, vomiting, severe stomach pains and seizures. These are just a few to watch out for. There are many, many more common garden plants which are poisonous to pets. A great guide and resource book is called ‘Poisonous 2 Pets’ by Nicole O’Kane – she has a website www. poisonous2pets.com.au, where you can order the book. www.gcnews.com.au

Holding a glass of water

A young lady confidently walked around the room while leading and explaining stress management to an audience with a raised glass of water. Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, 'half empty or half full?'. She fooled them all. "How heavy is this glass of water?" she inquired with a smile. People called out answers from 200 to 400 grams. She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold

it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She continued, "and that's the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on." The bible tells us in 1 Peter 5:7 ‘Turn all your anxiety over to God because he cares for you.’ If you’re finding life difficult right now why don’t you turn your troubles and cares over to God and ask him to help you through. He really does care about you. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Good news

Skippy Park Make sure you hop down to Skippy Park at Landsborough to check out the new playground equipment and beautiful landscape design. Early reports confirm that the double flying fox and ropes are ‘awesome’ additions to the playground. And if you’re wondering about the large mound of earth that’s still surrounded by wire fencing – that’s going to be part of the next stage of making this the best playground on the Sunshine Coast.

Award for Beerwah Place+ And to top it all off, Council has again been recognised for its consultation and planning on the Place+ Beerwah project, receiving the prestigious ‘Award of Excellence for Planning in Landscape Architecture’ at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architect (AILA) awards. The award follows council’s ‘Towards Best Practice’ Award from the Place Leaders Association. It’s great recognition of the commitment from council and the community to create a better place to live and build a strong community, as Beerwah transforms into a modern country town.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Now that we’ve had the announcement of a Referendum on Constitutional Recognition of Local Government it’s important to fully understand what you will be voting for in September. To find out more information visit the Local Government Association of Queensland website and click on the picture of Parliament House. The Eudlo-Mooloolah Community Disaster Management Group met recently to review the draft Community Disaster Management Plan and talk about pertinent issues such as inconsistent road naming, opportunities for community education (particularly regarding flood awareness) and what to keep in an emergency kit. I will be hosting a forum with Andrew Powell MP to give community members an opportunity to learn about the proposed Obi Obi Zipline. Sunshine Coast Council is a proud supporter of this project led by the Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games. We have a Sunshine Coast Hinterland Nature Based Tourism Plan that was developed with the community and identified the Obi Obi Zipline as a potential project. Now we welcome you to join us to hear how the preliminary planning for this project is progressing. On Tuesday, June 25 from 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start at Montville Village Hall, Memorial Close (off Main Street). Call council on 5441 8137 to RSVP. A number of Queensland council’s have joined forces to tag wild dogs in urban-adjacent areas in order to gain a better understanding of their habits and movements. Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Logan, Brisbane and Gold Coast councils are all contributing to the project which involves fitting wild dogs with GPS trackers with the aim of developing better control strategies for communities. www.gcnews.com.au

There’s so much happening in Glasshouse Country at the moment and from meeting with locals at my Out and About sessions it’s clear that people want to hear more about the great things going on in our community. Bright lights are shining from two new light towers on the Beerwah Sports Complex – and they look fantastic. Council installed the new lights to increase the sporting options available at the grounds. Increased lighting means there can be more night training to both fields and that an even wider range of activities can be offered. There’s now the capacity to host night competitions and to host sporting grades at higher levels. It’s really exciting for all the users of the complex and I hope it makes a wonderful difference to the range of activities on offer in Beerwah. Work will soon get underway at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre on tiling the 25m pool and I’ll let you know more about what to expect once the dates for the work program are confirmed.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery Plant of the Week Hinchinbrook Banksia Banksia plagiocarpa

If you are looking for a stunning flowering native that will attract the local wildlife, it is hard to go past the beautiful Hinchinbrook Banksia. As its common name suggests it is endemic to Hinchinbrook Island and the surrounding mainland in North Queensland. This amazing plant produces metallic grey buds and lemon flowers that explode into life throughout most of the year. These flowers are dripping with nectar and that’s what attracts the wildlife. It also produces highly ornamental flushes of rusty red new growth that looks fantastic. It grows between 2 to 4m high by 2m wide and is best maintained as a bushier shrub by regular tip pruning. This is a hardy plant in full sun as long as it is given a well drained position in your garden. This is just one of many rare or hard to obtain Aussie natives that GO GREEN will be showcasing at this year’s award winning QLD Garden Expo on July 5, 6 and 7 at the Nambour Showgrounds.

Contributed by Jenny Kelly The first two rounds of the Ladies Championship have been played and so far it's a close run thing in all three Grades. The girls will play the final two rounds on Thursday and Friday next week. In conjunction with the Championships, we play a daily competition in two divisions for prizes kindly donated by Hinterland Body and Soul and on Thursday the lucky winner, Sue Williamson, took home the Division 1 prize. Sue scored a 72 Nett, with Karen Kemp runner up on 73 Nett. Marg Hunkin took out the Division 2 trophy with a nett score of 71 followed by Lydia Costello with a 76 Nett. NTPs were Ally Smerdon on 2, Fay Barry on 5, Gail Gundry had a great shot into the 16th and Andrea Campbell took out 18th. The ball rundown went to 78. On Friday, Barb Saunders hit the best shot of the Championship so far when she struck a beautiful 5 iron into the 16th which never looked like missing and went into the hole for a ‘Hole in One’. Well done Barb, congratulations on a great shot. Let’s hope there are many more great shots next week when we will be back to have another go at this great game of ours. Till then stay safe and good golfing.

Beegee’s Soccer News

Contributed by Frank Doonan This weekend we had 25 games played at home from under 6’s through to Senior Men’s on Friday it started with the 35’s having a 2 all draw and the 4th’s playing a hard fought game but going down in the end. On Saturday the games just kept flowing with some excellent playing by all the teams. Our 15 boys had their first win for the year the boys were very happy, Bribie beat them the last time they played but the boys got them back this time with a 4-0 score the boys are having a good time as well, Jarrod, Lachlan, Rafael and Joshua scored the goals good effort to the team they have a bye this week. The 17 boys had a hard fought win as well the boys have had a slow start to the season but will come home strong there is some good talent in this squad. The 13 boys had a win on Saturday which keeps them top of the ladder the boys are working hard at training and the results are showing on the pitch so keep up the hard work. Our senior’s played Saturday night and both teams played well with the seconds pulling off a draw. The boys were under strength due to some players having to go up to the first division team that had 5 players out with other commitments. As a result of this our seniors didn’t fair too well either, with so many new combinations. But fellows keep at it as the great saying goes you have to lose a few before you win lots. Next week we have our over 35’s and 4th Division teams playing at home on Friday starting at 6.30pm don’t forget meals night on Friday so make a night of it and support the boys. The Senior Men’s play at home on Saturday against Caboolture and we should have a full squad back to play them so it should be a good contest and our seconds might get there first win for the year they keep improving each week. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Relationships benefit from a stabilising influence, and if you have a partner, you should make plans with an eye towards creating long lasting results. The new Moon in your own sign puts you in the spotlight. Do make a list of wishes you would like to see come true. Impulsive flairs. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Passions again ignite controversy and conflict, bringing you anxiety and uncertainty, so send yourself off in search of a safe harbour. The Gemini new Moon helps to lighten the mood and opens your mind up to alternative perspectives. Maybe it’s time to be lured into escape? LEO July 23 – August 22 This new Moon Gemini week is likely to bring a new friend into your life, or even offer a chance to make a fresh start with an old one. Schedule at least a little down time for yourself and you will probably end up craving more. Don’t take something new on and then grumble. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This new Moon week gives a restless impetus to express your business ideas in search of recognition. A good week to show off what you’ve achieved. One of those rare weeks when you may be up early with the birds and find warm emotional receptivity with your close friends.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The new Moon in Gemini brings Aquarians creative opportunities and many chances to express themselves. New ideas that arrive through the courtesy of younger people are worth exploring. Generally speaking it’s more satisfying to stay on the home turn and to just enjoy peace now. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The new Moon emphasises home matters this week and opening up family communication channels. Perhaps you will redecorate or entertain yourself with odd jobs around the home. Pluto and Uranus are triggering odd desires which may include exhilarating impulsive spending. ARIES March 21 – April 20 After the new Moon weekend in Gemini, it brings with it a month of change and fast paced events, testing your ability to adapt and improvise. There will be plenty of new developments giving reason to change your mind every second day! New stimulating mental outlook. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 With this new Moon in Gemini, this week has you standing up to your shadow fears or unsettling declarations. Keeping your head and allowing patience a fix-it-up all revelation could appear in your sector of self worth. A radical decision brings a quick change to a situation.

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The compatible new Moon sign of Gemini is advantageous for starting a vacation, especially if travel will be part of your itinerary. Anyway it’s a good week to open up new vistas of thought and action. It is not a successful week for gambling or verbal sparring in power accusations. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Your words are perfumed with love and passion under a new Moon that opposes a poetic Neptune. Being authentic is important so don’t turn your poetry into cruel speech. You can count on reliable Saturn in your sign to help you know what to do. Exotic passion is active now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Indications and possibility of new approaches to yourself and partner. The two of you should clear your minds and open yourselves up to new ways of thinking. You can enjoy and take pride in providing security for your loved ones by making valuable purchases for the home. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 As the new Moon stretches itself from Gemini to Cancer, you are stimulated to switch around work and health schedules for more efficiency, but complications require patient management. With the arrival of the Cancer Moon don’t hide behind your usual defensiveness insecurity.

"Wow, that's incredible," the doctor says. A little later in the day, the doctor calls Royston's wife. "Barbara," he says, “Royston is doing fine but I had to call you because I'm in awe of his relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night and poof! The light goes on in the bathroom, and when he's done, poof! The light goes off?" "Oh Good Grief!" Barbara exclaims. He's peeing in the fridge again!" Submitted Hugh Jones, Beerwah

with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com 25

Royston, A 72-year-old man goes for a physical. All of his tests come back normal so the doctor says, "Royston, everything looks great. How are you doing mentally and emotionally? Are you at peace with God?" Royston replies, "God and I are tight. He knows I have poor eyesight, so he's fixed it when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, poof!, the light goes on. When I’m done, poof!, the light goes off."
