his weekend we decided to stretch our wings and head for the range, with perfect weather on Sunday we headed up to the Real Food Festival at Maleny. The event while being held in Maleny was very much a regional event and it was great to see some of our Glasshouse Country locals as part of this excellent event. The crew from ‘Get Joosed’ were kept busy with their refreshing smoothies, Barrys Family Butchers generated plenty of attention from their small goods, Strawberry Fields were also there selling their delectable fruit and promoting their farm as a great location for a day out.

The students from Beerburrum State School had contributed a food art display with the theme ‘you are what you eat’ and Landsborough author Rhonda Hetzel was a guest speaker on both days of the festival. The event was really well organised and certainly had plenty to put to the taste test or for you to learn a little bit more about what goes into what we eat. While I definitely enjoyed the taste testing opportunities, Brownie is keen to start keeping bees and is also currently designing a ‘Chicken Taj Mahal’ for our back garden; the festival gave him some renewed motivation to get those projects underway.

The power of prayer Paul Kelly captured it perfectly in song ‘from little things, big things grow’, but for real inspiration, you need look no further than a small group of Beerwah residents who are making a big difference to the lives of those less fortunate. Zambian Outreach, a group of eight local residents, who met through prayer and bible studies, have in the past five years, managed to raise more than $US 330,000 to help educate, feed and empower the slum dwellers of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. This humble, hard working group came into being after a member of their group, Peachester’s David Christmas, came back from a trip to Zambia in 2006, having met and been inspired by Pastor Jacob Phiri.
Pastor Jacob and his family University educated Jacob gave up everything – his home, his car, his lifestyle, his security and his future – to establish Action for Empowerment Zambia (AFE), to help change the lives of the vulnerable in the slums of Lusaka. Since 2007, Zambian Outreach have been working with him and AFE to transform the lives of hundreds of people. David together with his wife Jo, Dennis and Sandra Felton, Heather Rutherford, Jo Allan, Val Scott and Anna Noordhof, meet weekly to discuss the progress of the major projects they are funding in Lusaka, and to come up with

The group hopes more children can be sponsored so they can attend school ways to raise money to continue the work that has already been done. This work includes establishing a community farm, building a clinic, and educating and feeding some of the hundreds of orphan children. According to Heather, the project is one of God’s miracles. “We are very thankful to God for allowing us to do what we are doing,” she said. “What we have been able to achieve so far simply wouldn’t have been possible without his help.” So far, the group estimate they have helped out at least 400 families directly, and many more indirectly, by improving living standards, awareness and education in the slum, where it is estimated that at 80 per cent of the 34,000 residents are HIV positive. Under Jacob’s careful guidance, love, care and support, he has also helped the inhabitants of the slum turn 100 hectares of land into productive farmland, producing a range of cash crops and maize to feed themselves, along with a herd of goats and chickens. It’s an ongoing program of empowerment, says David, but one which relies solely on their fundraising efforts. “Every cent we raise is being put to good use. We get regular monthly reports from Jacob, describing in detail just how the money is being spent, and it’s the wonderful results he is achieving that keeps us going, determined to keep raising funds to continue his work,” David said. If you would like more information, or to support the efforts of Zambian Outreach, visit their website at www.zambianoutreach.com, or phone David on 5494 9109.

On the eve of Lindsay’s paralympic performance last week, we caught up with his mum Sue, who was keeping the home fires burning in the absence of her son and husband Wes, who will be cheering him on. Sue, who has been in regular contact with Lindsay, said he was enjoying his experience in London as part of Australia’s paralympic team. “He said the opening ceremony was awesome, and he’s just loving every moment,” Sue said. “Lindsay said on his first morning, going down to the cafeteria for breakfast, he couldn’t believe how many people were there, and he’s been enjoying going along to watch other sports as a spectator, and just can’t get over the crowds – every seat in the house is full,” she said. Sue said it was fortunate that husband Wes was able to be there to see Lindsay compete. “By the time we found out Lindsay had made it on the Australian team, all the tickets had sold out. “Fortunately though, Athletics Australia had purchased some tickets for athletes families, so we were incredibly lucky that Wes was able to
get one of these and go along to watch Lindsay compete.” She said one of the highlights so far had been seeing his training mate, Russell Short, win bronze in the shot put in his seventh Paralympic Games. And when it came to his own performance, Our local paralympian, Lindsay Sutton it was just as inspiring. Lindsay placed 6th in the final, behind fellow Australian Todd Hoggetts who took out the gold and set a World Record for the event. While his performance in the final wasn't a personal best, he was pleased to achieve his goal of being in the top eight. Unfortunately Linday's performance was not televised however I am sure that the whole community will be proud of his achievement. Lindsay touches down in Sydney later this week and will be officially welcomed home with his teammates in a ticket tape parade at the Sydney Opera House on Friday morning, before heading home to Mt Mellum. Keep an eye out for our interview with Lindsay in two weeks time, once Lindsay has had a chance to catch his breath.

Local communities rally behind Dementia Awareness Day It’s an alarming statistic, and one that may take many by surprise. Dementia, in all its forms, is today more common that cancer, but it remains a largely misdiagnosed, and rarely spoken about condition. One person intent on changing that is Linda Morse, proprietor of Beerwah Books n Bits. Linda knows all too well just how little understanding, information and support there is for dementia, after her father was diagnosed with lewy body disease last year. “When I tried to find out more about lewy body disease, I had to go overseas for more information and support, and then earlier this year, I started my own support group,” Linda said. “Now being involved as a caregiver for someone who has dementia, I have a far greater understanding, and want to share that with others.” In an effort to raise awareness Linda has organised the inaugural Dementia Awareness Day at Landsborough this Saturday, September 15. Featuring guest speakers, information, static displays, entertainment and food, the event at the Landsborough School of Arts, with support from the local Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House communities, is being held as part of the weekly Saturday markets, and aims to help unravel some of the myths surrounding the condition.
Charity Golf Day raises funds for kids
It’s also about de-stigmatising dementia, said Linda. “I’ve heard it referred to as a crazy person’s disease, or an old person’s disease, but it is neither of these. Organiser Linda Morse “Dementia is not a disease in itself, it’s an umbrella term for a whole host of different symptoms and conditions for which there has been very little research, and even less information and awareness,” she said. “It is going to become one of the biggest health issues facing the nation, an enormous drain on our financial and emotional resources, so it’s critical that we learn more about it.” She said with an estimated $614 billion spent on dementia related illness worldwide this year, the condition needs the same level of awareness as other diseases. The Dementia Awareness Day will be held from 8.00am - 2.00pm as part of the Saturday markets at the Landsborough School of Arts. For more information call Linda on 0413 009 840 or check out the Facebook page, Lewy Body Support Group Sunshine Coast, or the website, www.lewybodysupport.org.

Getting on with the job Newly elected Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce president Bob McLean never had any intention of putting his hand up for the top job, but following a long and hotly contested election campaign for Division 1 in the local government elections earlier this year, he saw there was just too much unfinished business. So began the latest chapter of Bob’s career, a career that has been dominated by years of service to the local community. And just one month into his role, Bob has already identified a clear path forward. “My main objective is to identify the number of businesses operating in the Chamber footprint, and then work with them to find out their needs,” Bob said. “We’ve already established two subcommittees to look at marketing and the new Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, and I would also like to establish a tourism subcommittee, to look further into the marketable opportunity that is the whole catchment of Glasshouse Country.” Despite his countless years of service to the community in various roles, Bob said he still felt he had the drive and energy to give more. “I am fairly passionate about the role the Chamber plays in our local area, and I believe I have a lot of knowledge to provide the necessary support to both businesses and the communities they serve and represent, right across our region,” Bob said.
“My hope is that our members value the time they spend at our meetings, that they consider it time well spent as we work towards our goals, and while I can only gauge their response by the level of interest and participation, to date it has all been really positive.” “I am really looking forward to being able to work with our local elected representatives at both the local and state level in representing Glasshouse Country and ensuring the best outcomes for the communities it encompasses.” “My hope is to be a leader, and to empower as many others within the chamber as I can as we set about our task of supporting business growth in the region by empowering our local communities.” The Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce meets the third Wednesday of the month, for more information email info@glasshousemountains. com.

A petition urging authorities to install traffic signals at a notorious Beerwah intersection has this week been launched. It comes after Caloundra MP Mark McArdle met with concerned residents last month in front of Beerwah State School (intersection of Old Gympie Rd/Peachester Rd) and called on the local community to rally together and start a petition. “I’m extremely pleased to see Beerwah motherof-three Lisa McConnell has helped launch this petition,” Mr McArdle, who has backed the petition, said. “This is a very busy and dangerous stretch of road and something needs to be done before someone is seriously hurt.” Ms McConnell has three children who attend the school and walk home daily.
“Traffic that goes through there in the afternoon rarely stops for the children… they have to play chicken with the cars,” Ms McConnell said. “A set of lights should be mandatory for this intersection.” Mr McArdle is urging as many people possible to sign the e-petition online at http://www. parliament.qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/ e-petitions or a hard copy available at his office, 1/118 Bulcock St, Caloundra. Any local businesses or groups wishing to distribute copies of the hard copy petition are asked to contact Mr McArdle’s office. The petition closes on the 29th October, where it will then be lodged in Parliament and Transport Minister Scott Emerson asked to respond.

School News ‘Funtastic’ Day of Athletics
Landsborough kids teaching kids
Tug-of-war was one of the favourite competitions, but no one took it too seriously. Corey Bullard falls down laughing at the fun of it all
Master Chefs from Landsborough participating in an aromatherapy elimination game
The final day of winter put on perfect weather for Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Prep to Year 3 Athletics Carnival. Students, staff and parents began the day decorating the house tents which looked glorious. Gone are the days of a couple of streamers and a sad little balloon. This year there were inflatable sharks, tiger tails, crocodile hats, footprints, stuffed crocodiles and colours of all kinds on faces, in hair and everywhere the eye could see. The students began the morning running two sprint races and then rotated through long jump, high jump and the infamous tug-of-war which really drew a crowd when it was the parents turn! After a sausage sizzle lunch run by the GCCC P and F, children joined multi-aged house teams for fun tabloid games. Children were flinging chickens, digging for treasure, crawling through tunnels, avoiding giant gym balls while carrying cups of water, building towers and racing in obstacle courses and relays. Excellent examples of cooperation and team work could be seen all over the oval. At the end of the morning, students still had just enough energy for one more rousing war cry challenge and then the winning house was announced. This was a fantastic day of fun and competition.
A group of students recently represented the school at the Australia Post Kids Teaching Kids two day workshop, held at Lake Kawana Community Centre and Cahill Scrub Bushland Reserve, Peachester at the end of August. At the workshops, Landsborough students delivered a 40 minute presentation in front of their peers and mentors from other local schools. Their presentation included a dazzling introduction through song and dance based around the ‘reduce, re-use and recycle’ theme, followed by a power point display of their learning journey into sustainability. The township of Landsborough was a major focus, with children studying their local surrounds, looking at changes and development and the value of the ‘green corridor’. Students also participated in workshops on topics such as how to set up a worm farm, the values of school composting, Sarah does some cooking with produce from the garden and 'hands-on’ learning about a fabulous Master Chef elimination game in the environment aromatherapy. The school wishes to thank teacher, Mrs Chris Jorgensen, for her dedication to this program as well as other ‘green’ initiatives within the school.

Bankfoot House Charity Evening A selection of Queensland wines and cheeses on the Bankfoot verandah at sundown was an ideal setting for a Cancer Council Queensland fundraising event. Guests enjoyed both red and white wines from the Clovely Estate (South
Burnett) and an extensive range of cheeses, generously supplied by Maleny Cheeses. Apart from studiously critiquing the wines, a Baby Photo Competition was an added challenge during the night’s festivities. Entrants were required to correctly apply names to the photos of babies on the entry form. Many thanks to those local identities brave enough to provide their baby photos! Ethel Burgess was declared the winner after correctly identifying eight of the 19 photos. Ethel’s early nursing training in the Maternity Ward was obviously a big advantage. Joint runners-up were Jocelyn Morgan and Jan Gresham.

Brisbane Friendship Force
Visitors from many parts of Arizona in the USA joined the Brisbane Friendship Force house tour at Bankfoot House recently. The international tourists showed a keen interest in the Cobb & Co Coach lunch stop and were impressed with the range of historical family photographs in the collection. After hearing of the work undertaken by a ‘Bullocky’, a term they were unfamiliar with, they wished to hear examples of the language spoken by a Bullocky! Not an easy question to answer in mixed company.
If you are interested in joining the Friends of Bankfoot House, phone 5493 0197 on Wednesday, or contact the President Ron Gillinder on 0407 760 989. Email friends@bankfoothouse.org to find out more check out the website www.bankfoothouse.org

Doing Business
Business Buzz with Vanessa Rumble
Five minutes with Jay Globits, General Manager of Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club
For the most popular and trusted brands in electrical and bedding homewares, you can’t go past Beerwah Betta Home Living in Simpson Street. Locals can now purchase some of the most trusted brands, including LG, right here in Beerwah. Never before has LG been available locally, so this is a great opportunity to shop locally. They may have had a name change, but it’s still the same friendly team that have been servicing the local community for over 10 years. Now however, Beerwah Betta Home Living offers an even larger range of popular, well known brands, such as Beko, Daewoo, and Hisense, as well as a larger range of bedding and furniture. Same owners, same friendly staff, plus the convenience of a mini Heritage Bank branch in store. Can’t afford to pay today? Ask staff about Irent, as well as HSBC Finance, it’s shopping made easy.
Where were you working before taking on this role? I was the General Manager of Mooloolaba Bowls Club, a massive club which has recently undergone $3 million dollars of redevelopment over the past two years. It is one of the best bowling facilities in Australia with a roofing structure that covers two greens. So we heard that you are a pretty impressive bowler, so was it a case of wanting to work within the sport you were so enthusiastic about? No, in actual fact when I started working in bowls clubs I didn’t play at all. I was a keen rugby league player and after suffering a career ending knee injury I was looking for something to assist with my rehabilitation. I started bowling and found that I had a natural talent for it, so continued with it. With a job at a high profile coast club and a successful bowls career happening – what made you decide to take on the role at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club? While I loved my previous job and left it on good terms, I was ready for a personal change and am really looking forward to taking on new challenges. Between being the club’s general manager and representing the club as a bowler meant I was never away from the club, which can be difficult in the long term. What are you most looking forward to in your new position? I really enjoy the hands-on part of the job, being able to serve behind the bar, mingle with the club members and guests to find out what they want from the club and tweaking the in-house operations to have everything running smoothly. I am keen to get a good understanding of the local community and am looking forward to working closely with the committee who are committed to ensuring that the club stays relevant and continues to provide the best possible facility for the local community. My preference has always been for working in clubs, which is quite different to working in hotels where the focus is on profits. In clubs the focus is all about developing and improving the facilities for members and guests.
The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce has been hosting an annual dinner for the past few years. At last year’s event, the former Mayor Bob Abbott was our guest speaker which made for some pretty heated exchanges between the special guest and the Chamber members. This year’s event may be a little calmer, however it will be a great opportunity for local business people to come together for some networking and discussion as well as having the opportunity to hear from our Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski about what Council has been doing to benefit our community. The other guest on the night will be Stephen Dittman, Chair of the Sunshine Coast Chambers of Commerce Alliance. All business people are invited to attend on Wednesday, September 19 at the Beerwah RSL, tickets are $28.50 (includes two course meal). RSVP by calling Sarah at Glasshouse Country News on 5438 7745 by 4.00pm on Monday, September 17.

Tina is a Holistic Counsellor and has many techniques tailored to deal with your needs. One of them is Family and Systemic Constellations developed by Bert Hellinger 25 years ago to reveal hidden dynamics within families, which he called ‘The Orders of Love’. We have all grown up in different family systems, where we developed our patterns of relating. Often these patterns can create dysfunctional relationships or influence how we relate. We want to change yet don’t know how to start, where to look, what to do. Entanglements in family dynamics can result in relationship difficulties between partners, parents and children and between siblings. They can also contribute to other issues such as addictions, illnesses, work and social difficulties or negative repetitive patterns in our lives.
The work with family constellations gives us the opportunity, in a powerful, respecting and safe setting, to look deeply into the entanglements which may have distorted the natural order in a family system and supports the changes in how we are relating. Ring for an appointment on 0435 364 028. Day and evening appointments available in Landsborough, Maleny, Buderim and Mooloolaba. Concessions available. Phone 0435 364 028 or email tinabloemer@gmx.com

A letter to myself...
‘They’ve grown up now – living a life of their own. They have their own friends, their own hobbies and desires outside of the family unit. They still love me, sure, but they don’t need me like they used to. And I missed it, missed it all because I was so focussed on getting that housework done, resenting not being able to do MY things, tried to accelerate their growth and make them someone else. I didn’t stop to appreciate those cuddles, the giggles, the unconditional love and innocence they once had. So wake up and experience it all now! Because before you know it, you will be me and they will have left the nest. Embrace it and make the most of it. This is my message to you so you can change. Love from your future self.’ I reflected on this message one night after checking on my sleeping kids. Their innocence and sweetness touched me and made me realise how much I loved them and how quickly they are growing up. I also realised how much time I’d spent that day thinking about those trivial little things, which, in the scheme of things, really aren’t that important. I needed a wake-up call, because before I know it, they will be grown up, and the current moment will just be a memory. Right now, I can enjoy them, have fun with them and embrace the joy of parenting. Right now, I have been given the gift of two precious little lives teaching me true joy and unconditional love. As John Lennon once said, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Stop making other plans and start living this current moment to the fullest. Love and family are what really matter, make this moment count.

You Said It The future of Mooloolah Recreation Reserve The Mooloolah Recreation Reserve was officially opened in 1912, but 100 years later, many Mooloolah Valley residents may not know that the Reserve off Way Street Mooloolah even exists, or they may think of it as ‘the Pony Club grounds’. In fact, the Mooloolah Pony Club moved its headquarters to adjoining land several years ago and the Sunshine Coast Council is now revising the Master Plan for the Recreation Reserve. Since 2009, the Mooloolah Valley Community Association and Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare have been working with council officers and Cr Jenny McKay to ensure that the Reserve is enhanced and available for the use of the entire community.
Previous community surveys have indicated that the Reserve could be used for community events such as concerts, a Christmas party, markets and sports matches. The other common theme evident in surveys was the desire for recreational facilities for picnics, children’s play, walking, running, and other forms of exercise. A number of people have suggested the installation of exercise equipment similar to equipment they have seen at other parks on the Coast such as the one next to the Kawana Surf Life-Saving Club. This equipment could be placed in a group or spread alongside a path to form exercise stations. Time is running out to ensure that the Master Plan meets both our current needs and those of our children. Information on the Draft Master Plan may be found on Council’s website www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. The Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc may be contacted through the Community Centre on 5494 7822. Heather Flanders Member of Mooloolah Valley Community Association
Total thoughtlessness

Conditions
I cannot believe that on August 31, I received an invoice from Sunshine Coast Council for pet registration, issue date September 1. The thoughtlessness of this invoice and the devastation you have caused to both myself and my husband is beyond belief. Council buried our dog Willow themselves on August 23 this year and obviously we have still not come to terms with this crisis in our lives. We recently paid in excess of $1,300.00, just a month ago, to save his eye. Everyone is upset about the Life Savers of our community getting a raw deal, although they work tirelessly to help those that need help, and those around any accident scene.
Maybe the animal control department needs a lesson on how much they can hurt someone that is grieving so badly over a 10 year old dog that was part of a wonderful family. Yvonne Taylor Glass House Mountains
Daffodil thanks I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the shops, businesses, and schools that sold the display box merchandise. These businesses are from across the areas of Beerburrum, Glass House, Beerwah, Peachester and Landsborough. A very big thank you to all the willing volunteers that helped sell the fresh daffodils and merchandise on the stalls over the Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This year we raised over $10,000, which is a great achievement, I sincerely appreciate everyone’s help and support for another successful Queensland Cancer ‘Daffodil Day’. Glenda Halpin Beerwah

Mayor supports small business
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has gone into bat for small retailers by backing opposition to a proposal which could devastate mum and dad businesses across the region. The National Retail Association, which represents some of Australia’s biggest companies, wants longer trading hours in south east Queensland for their members on Saturdays. Mr Jamieson said if the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission approves the proposal it could be disastrous for small traders – many of whom have been doing it tough in recent years. “Small businesses are the backbone of the Sunshine Coast economy – so we need to make sure they are given a fair go,” Mr Jamieson said. He said recent Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show more than 93 per cent of retailers on the Sunshine Coast are small businesses which employ less than 20 people each. “If the proposal to extend Saturday evening trading to big retailers is approved – it could see the end of some mum and dad businesses and the jobs they generate. “The ripple effect of small businesses closing would have serious consequences for other local businesses which either source products from them, or sell to them. The National Retail Association has applied to the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission to allow big retailers to be able to open from 7.00am to 7.00pm on Saturdays in south east Queensland. At the moment, their trading hours are from 8.00am to 5.30pm. www.gcnews.com.au

Yes – a local store that is competitive on prices! Over the last few months, we have overhauled all of our prices… and as a result – we are now VERY competitive with our pricing. In many cases, we are on par with or even cheaper than the big guys like Joyce Mayne and JB Hi Fi. We do find it frustrating when locals assume that just because we are a smaller shop – we must automatically be more expensive. So please – give us a go! Even if you just let us quote you as a comparison… we are sure that you will be surprised. We have a new website now that lists a huge range of products with their prices – so you can get online and compare prices at any time. You can either buy online or just come in store and have a chat with us about what you might need. Many products are in stock now and if they aren’t – they are usually ready the next day.
Warning – Nasty Facebook Virus There is currently a Trojan virus circulating that is infecting Windows PCs in large volumes and stealing email login credentials. The Trojan is contained in an email that pretends to be a Facebook Notification and is located in a zip file attached to that email. Once the email account login details have been obtained, the affected email account is then being used to send large volumes of spam. Please be extra vigilant when checking emails supposedly from Facebook. It is important to note that Facebook notification emails do not normally contain attachments! If you think you have been affected by this virus – just bring your computer in to us and we can sort it out for you!

What do I do with it? OK so you’ve set a Facebook page... now what the heck do you do with it? These days business owners are fast realising the fact that they 'should' be using Facebook, amongst other online tools, but when setting up a page they will often still be wondering what the point of it all is, and what they’re actually going to do with the page once it’s live. Well the good news is that once you’ve created a Facebook page, it has the potential to grow and evolve on its own, by providing a place for clients or associates to 'Like' your business and add their comments, which can in turn lead to plenty of discussion... all on your page... all without you doing anything at all. If you’re sitting there wondering why your own Facebook page isn’t a lively hub of active discussion then chances are that you may need to give it a poke and a prod to get it started. Here’s a few things you can try to kick your Facebook page into gear: 1. Select an eye-catching graphic for your profile pic, and the same goes for your page banner (the large image up the top). 2. Invite your friends - don’t hesitate to let your friends know about your new page - you might just start off a string of 'Like's. The functionality for inviting your friends is there on your main page, within Facebook. 3. Create a Fanpage - entice users to 'Like' you by giving them access to something great if they do. 4. Post a comment or two - I mentioned above that you don’t HAVE TO do much commenting yourself on your Facebook page, but the reality is that it helps a great deal if you can comment or post an image at least once per week.

From concrete mixers to rotary hoes – they’ve got what you need to make the WE ARE HERE job a whole lot easier. They are more than happy to deliver direct to your door, or if you prefer they have a courtesy trailer so you can choose and collect exactly what you want at your leisure. And Glenn’s springtime tip is to top dress your lawn now using their super top soil mix and you’ll have lush even lawns in time for summer.
Spring Jobs for the backyard
• Soil temperatures need to be around 20°C to germinate seeds of warm season vegetables. To check if it’s warm enough, see if pumpkin seeds are germinating by themselves from your compost. • Grow any herbs now – except for coriander. • Take poinsettia cuttings to strike and give away as Christmas presents. • Custard apples should lose their leaves this month, so it’s time to prune them. • Mulch your gardens to keep in the soil moisture. • Passionfruit vines will start to grow vigorous new shoots. Fertilise them well and mulch to retain soil moisture. • Divide canna lilies. Water them in well with a seaweed solution. • Throw some gypsum over your lawn to open up the soil, allowing the rain to penetrate deeper. • Spray your flowering mangoes with Mancozeb or a copper-based fungicide to prevent the disease anthracnose. • Watch out for weeds – they will germinate and grow quicker now. Vegetables Plant carrot, choko, zucchini, sweet potato, cucumber, eggplant, beans, lettuce, radish, spring onion, squash, tomato, beetroot, capsicum, kohl rabi, okra, pumpkin, rockmelon, rosella, silver beet, sweet corn and watermelon. Flowers Plant alyssum, bedding begonia, cosmos, marigold, boronia, salvia, petunia, aster, amaranthus, celosia, phlox, portulaca, sunflower, torenia, zinnia, ageratum, gloxinia, impatiens, calendula, Californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, verbena, gazania, gerbera, kangaroo paw, nasturtium, rudbeckia and snapdragon.

Introducing: The Revolutionary New Gazebo Flat-Pack System Used By The World’s Smartest Landscapers ...
Spring Garden A Flat-Pack Gazebo
{ Sp Introdeucial cto O f f e r . ry
The genius of Flat-Pack Gazebo kits is that everything you need to build your Gazebo is in the kit — measured, precut and ready to assemble. Buying a gazebo in kit form saves you the hassle of making blueprints and buying the wood. There’s no lugging heavy lumber from your local building supply, no measuring fussy angle cuts, no agonizing over miscut corners due to poor measuring. Moroneys gazebos are easy to assemble yourself, or they can be delivered partially assembled. Our gazebos are made from natural products that can be stained or painted to suit a particular colour scheme. Alternatively, they can be left natural. Best of all, the flat pack gazebos are highly cost effective, but result in a professional finish. Gazebos provide a pleasant outdoor space to enjoy time with family and friends. Right now, Moroneys has a Special Introductory Offer of $200 off our standard flat pack gazebos, available until Friday 21st September. Come in to Moroney’s Landscape Supplies, 37 Moroney Place Beerwah, and talk to us about a gazebo to suit your yard.

We care our environment Avid gardener andabout owner of Professional Weeds Solution The Nambour Garden Club visited us recently on one of their outings, learning about our native frogs and the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly and how we can assist bringing this butterfly back from the brink of extinction. Other discussions held involved our bush tucker walk and also our raised, no dig, no watering vegetable patches. It was a most successful and by all accounts everyone enjoyed themselves. So if you are a member of a club that has any links to the environment, please consider us a place to visit on your day out, just call Dawn at the Mooloolah Native Nursery on 5494 5074 and we can arrange something for you. We have been very busy in the Nursery getting all the plants ready for spring. The time to start planting is fast approaching with not too much cool weather left for this year hopefully. We are a funny lot to keep happy: first it is too much rain, then it is too cold, next I expect to hear that it is too hot! The warmer the weather, the happier the plants are at least and that is the main concern. On that note we are now open Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 4.00pm so feel free to visit us. If you have any questions regarding our local native species please come and see us, if you require something to be identified bring in a sample, at least 30cm long if possible with a number of leaves, flowers and seed also assist in identifying plants.

This evergreen understorey small tree to 12 metres is found in rainforests throughout New South Wales and Queensland. An attractive plant for a shady position, it tolerates wind and light frosts, making it an adaptable species. Word has it that the bushmen of years gone by used the leaves of this tree to start fires in wet and rainy conditions when everything was soaked; it was due to the waxy coating on the leaf itself. The upper surface of the leaf is glossy green and has a pale grey to whitish colour on the under surface, making it easy to identify. The leaf also hangs vertically and the new foliage can appear to be limp. The tiny perfumed pale yellow/cream flowers (autumn to winter) form in clusters. Red fruit then follows, maturing to black when ripe, which is seated in a disc-like cup. The fruit is eaten by Brown Cuckoo Dove, Green Catbird, Topknot Pigeon, Wompoo Fruit Dove, and White Headed Pigeon. Fruit bats also eat the fruit, making it an important food source for many animal species.

If you use the trial bus service between Beerwah and Peachester, known as Flexilink, or have a view about the service - now's the time to have your say. Let council know about your direct experience and how the service can be improved. The survey will have a big impact on council’s assessment of the sustainability of the transport route in our area. This is your Public Transport Levy in action so I urge you to help shape the future of the local Flexilink bus service by filling in a survey at council’s website.
Granted
It’s really good to see our community groups getting their share of council’s community partnerships funding program. Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee will receive $7,000 over two years to help with the operation and maintenance of the Beerwah Sportsground Complex. The pony club, bocce club and adjoining park and parking areas will receive regular mowing, general maintenance repairs, weed and pest control, turf repairs, aeration and fertilising, top dressing and levelling of surfaces. The Landsborough Tennis Club will receive $5,000 over the next two years to assist with the ongoing provision of courts and services. The club is looking to resurface or reconstruct their back courts and the grant will help the club to continue to provide their popular program of coaching and competitions while progress is made on the court improvement project.
Favourite Sunshine Coast place
Another special Sunshine Coast place to be kept secret just between us is the Ewen Maddock Park. Recently developed by SEQ Water this park will surprise and impress you. With school holidays almost here you will want to take a look at the article in next week's GCNews showcasing what an excellent local asset the park is. Contact me about Division 1 activities by calling the office on 5420 8987 or email rick.baberowski@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and don’t forget to mention your favourite secret spot on the Sunshine Coast.
Jenny McKay
Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Sport and Recreation Grounds
Community consultations for the Mooloolah sport and recreations grounds plan closed on September 7. We received some excellent input from residents, clubs and businesses. Amanda Tie, council’s Sports Development Officer, will attend my community breakfast meeting this month to share some of the feedback collected through the consultations.
Mooloolah Breakfast Meeting
The monthly meetings are continuing to draw a strong crowd and I have appreciated each opportunity to engage with Mooloolah residents. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 27 at the Thunderbird Café from 7.30am – 8.30am. If you are unable to attend the session please email me any discussion items at jenny.mckay@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
Council Community Grants
Another round of well-deserved council community grants has been released. I have heard many concerns over the last few months regarding the security of the council grants program given the current economy. There is no immediate reason for the removal of this program, and I trust that the wider council shares my opinion that the community grants are a vital council program.
Companion Dogs in Outdoor Dining Areas
Council laws currently state that official companion dogs are allowed to be present in outdoor dining areas, however this conflicts with current State legislation. Earlier this year council made a submission to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) to change this legislation to match the council law. FSANZ has now advised that the outcome of this submission will be available to the public in mid-October.
Getting Online
After a busy few months since the election, my online presence is back up and running. Please visit my website, jennymckay.com.au, or Facebook page, facebook.com/JennyMcKayCouncillor, to get in contact and for regular updates on Division 5. 26

How to buy a home like a seasoned pro Taking that first step onto the property ladder can be a little bit intimidating - after all, large financial commitments cannot be taken lightly. However, there are ways to enter the real estate market with the confidence of a big time investor. The secret to a smooth buying process comes down to three main factors - research, timing and advice. Research While finding the home of your dreams can sometimes take you by surprise, it is more often the case that you put a lot of time and energy www.gcnews.com.au
toward finding that special property. During this search period, you should be collecting as much knowledge as possible about your target market, as well as your home loan options. Ideally, you should know average asking prices, potential future value, building inspection results and even demographics of the local area before you sign on the dotted line. In terms of financial particulars, you should find out of any possible concessions offered by the government and state government and shop around for a suitable first home loan.
Timing Your research will let you know when it is a good time to buy. If the market is strong, interest rates are competitive and there is a good chance that your home will retain or gain value in the coming years, it may be the time to take the plunge. Alternatively, if all signs are pointing toward you losing a substantial amount of your investment in the long term, you may wish to walk away. Advice While it is important to refer to your own research, there are people out there who specialise in knowing the

I did love watching the televised events of the London Olympic Games. Naturally, along with many other Australians, the swimming was essential viewing but it is usually those sports with which I am not so familiar that hold even more fascination. The unbelievable speed and quick reactions of the table tennis players (when not throwing a game), the grace of the gymnasts who make a hand held rubber ball almost appear as an extension of their body, or the balance and timing of the divers. These performances can literally take ones breath away. Watching the Games is for me both an exhilarating and disheartening experience. This emotional extreme has nothing to do with the Gold medals Australia should have won, nearly won or proudly did win. Observing the fitness and skill of the athletes and appreciating the dedication, self discipline and sacrifice involved in attaining that level of success, I do

SEPTEMBER 12 2012
Father Kevin Smith Caloundra Catholic Parish ask myself, why does the 30 minute walk and a few stretches each day seem as elusive as an Olympic Gold medal? Carl Lewis the great sprinter, after one incredible win where he came from behind to win his race, was asked what his secret was. All sorts of theories were put before him as to how he won this particular event. His response was to say “I just kept running.” Some times that is all we can do and that is all that is required. Just keep running. Just quietly persevere. Just gently keep loving. Just keep at it. More may come from that than we could ever imagine. So I will just keep trying to get that walk in - gold medal or not! God bless, Fr Kevin

Beerwah Karate Sensei Ann Hill is really proud of her students that recently completed in the John Halpin Memorial tournament in Brisbane. Every student won at least one medal so their
There comes a time in every golfing year when the greens need coring and top dressing, and now is the time. Putting becomes hit and hope for a couple of weeks, but at least we all have an excuse, at least for a little while. While the greens staff worked on the front nine, 57 girls played the back nine twice in an 18 hole stroke competition held in two Divisions. The trophies this week were kindly donated by Debs Rutherford and Sue Williamson. In Division 1, Pam Gormley was too good with a 71 Nett, closely followed by Mavis Brimelow with a 72 Nett. In 2nd Division, Rosemary Collins scored a 72 Nett with Ruth Parish runner up on 73 Nett. NTP's went to Julie McMahon, Marjorie Pavitt, Lorraine McCamley and Pat Chapman. The Ball Rundown went to 75 Nett. Until next week, stay safe and good golfing.
total medal count was 14. If you would like to know more about Beerwah Karate you can contact Ann on 5491 3535.

Beerwah Bulldogs Contributed by Dean Roberts Sunshine Coast Rugby League action came to a close on the weekend with Grand Finals being played at Beerwah for the Juniors and the Seniors being held at Stockland Stadium. Saturday saw a perfect day for footy at Beerwah and it started in the right fashion for the host’s with the Bulldogs Under 12A’s maintaining their unbeaten record in 2012 by defeating Maroochydore 38-0. After the disappointment of losing their Grand Final in 2011 the boys have knuckled down and worked very hard for their success this season and all the players and team officials are to be congratulated. The Under 17 girls also won 14-12 over Deception Bay by scoring a try in the last minute in what was a very exciting finish to their game. The Under 15
girls produced some good footy but could not match it with the Deception Bay / Nambour team going down 24-18. Beerwah in 2012 has been at the forefront of the women’s and girl’s comps on the Sunshine Coast and all involved should be congratulated as we look forward to 2013 for greater participation in this area from the other clubs. Finally, the Beerwah Bulldogs RLFC would like to thank all the volunteers who helped out on Saturday for making the Grand Final Day such a success. We would like to also thank the following groups for their support, Beerwah Sportsground Committee, Beerwah Lions, Beerwah State School, Beerburrum State School, Beerwah Kennel Club, Glasshouse Cricket Club, Glasshouse Little Athletics and Glasshouse Pony Club. A lawyer and a senior citizen are sitting next to each other on a long flight. The lawyer thought seniors were so silly that he could get one over on them easily. The lawyer asks to play a game, but the senior is tired and politely declines. The lawyer persists, saying it was a lot of fun. "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me only $5.00. Then you ask me one, but I will pay you $500.00 if I don’t know," he says. This catches the senior's attention and, to keep the lawyer quiet, he agrees to play the game. The lawyer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the Earth to the Moon?" The senior doesn't say a word, but reaches into his pocket, pulls out a five-dollar note,
and hands it to the lawyer. Now, it's the senior's turn. He asks the lawyer, "what goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?" The lawyer uses his laptop to search all references he can find on the net. He sends e-mails to all the smart friends he knows; all to no avail. After an hour of searching, he finally gives up. He wakes the senior and hands him $500.00. The senior pockets the $500.00 and goes right back to sleep. The lawyer is going nuts not knowing the answer. He wakes the senior up and asks, "well, so what goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four?" The senior reaches into his pocket, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep. Don't mess with old farts! Lee Mapstone, Glass House
