Hi Everyone With the focus recently on the closing of the Beerwah RSL we have taken quite a few phone calls about ANZAC Day and what will be happening in Beerwah. There has been some rumours that ANZAC Day activities will not go ahead, however this is definitely not the case, the Beerwah – Peachester RSL Sub-Branch have planning for all of their regular activities in full swing. And the Beerwah RSL building will still be the centre of their ANZAC Day commemorations. The Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-Branch will have their Dawn Service and the Gunfire Breakfast as well as the March and Service at Landsborough. At Glass House Mountains there will once again be the March in Coonowrin Road followed by a service at the Glass House Mountains Hall. This year the march

has been extended so that the forming up will start at Page Street extending the march to 300m. There has been speculation this year with ANZAC Day coinciding with Easter that attendances could be down – however I am sure those of us that won’t be flying off to exotic holiday destinations will be there to show our support. Full details of all of these activities are included in the ad on 19. Regards,

Making a Splash Local Beerwah residents Paul Lancaster and Margaret Vita will be one of the feature exhibitors at the upcoming Brisbane Gardening Australia Expo. Despite their nursery having recently been flooded, they will still be showcasing their extensive range of water plants, including a range of exotic and rare water plants. Being a wholesale nursery, the Expo offers water plant enthusiasts the opportunity to get up close and personal and talk to the experts about any problems they are currently experiencing due to the wet weather. “Even water plants don’t enjoy this ongoing wet weather. Mainly, it is a constant battle against water born bugs and diseases, and we are regularly hand picking bugs at the moment to ensure we keep on top of the problem. The flood made an absolute mess of the nursery but luckily we are now in recovery mode,” explains Margaret. Always passionate about gardening, six years ago the couple decided to escape ‘the rat race’, turned their backs on Melbourne city living and literally packed up and moved to Beerwah ‘sight unseen’. Leaving behind reliable careers in automotive IT and administration, they embarked on a new life and are now one of the largest suppliers of water plants in Queensland. Their ‘living’ exhibit will be a stunning display with a small variety of water plants including water lilies and aquatic plants, heliconias and gingers and other sub tropical plants. They will also be on hand to share their expertise, provide tips and tricks as well as answer questions.

Creative Visual Images Margaret Vita and Paul Lancaster Water ponds are an environmentally friendly option to growing traditional plants. You don’t need to constantly water them and once they are set up, water pond gardens need very little maintenance yet look absolutely stunning. Another upside to water ponds is they don’t require much room - you can grow water plants in just a small water bowl, so they’re ideal for people with units or small terraces. Kookaburra Sits in the Beerwah Gum Tree It’s April and young Beerwah Kookaburras are out of the nest and taking on an important role in the Kookaburra family. If you see one Kookaburra around, it’s likely that a whole family is living nearby – and there are plenty of things you can do to be a Backyard Buddy to Kookaburras. Backyard Buddies is a free program run by Australia’s Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife. Each month, you get a Backyard Buddies email (B-mail) with tips to make your backyard inviting and safe for native animals. Download a free Kookaburra factsheet and get Bmail at www.backyardbuddies.net.au. “Around this time of year, Kookaburras that were only chicks a little while ago are now old enough to begin helping out their parents,” said Ms Leonie Gale, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife. “These young birds stay with their family group for up to four years, raising siblings and helping their family to defend their home turf.”

Laughing Kookaburra, photographer Garry Chapman

Laughing Kookaburra, photographer Rae Allen “The Kookaburra’s distinctive ‘koo-hoo-hoo-hoohaa-haa-haa-haa’ isn’t just a belly laugh – it’s a territorial display.” “Kookaburras make different sounds to communicate,” said Ms Gale. “At any time of year they chuckle to locate family members. During the breeding season from September to January they make a ‘chuck’ to find their family, and ‘squawk’ to beg for food from other Kookaburras in their group.” “Their famous laugh tells other Kookaburras that ‘This is our home, and we will fight for it.’ If you listen out for these calls, usually made in chorus by a family of Kookaburras, you should be able to discover the boundaries of their territory.” “One Kookaburra family’s territory can extend up to a hundred house blocks and include some parkland as well. Kookaburras are quite at home in urban areas, so they’re not an uncommon Beerwah sight.” “There are a lot of simple things we can do to protect this national icon, our laughing buddy. And Kookaburras are great to have around – not only do they provide lots of entertainment, and they eat mice,” said Ms Gale.

Back flip on water reform The State Government announced last week that water distribution will be returned to local councils in a sudden turn-around of government policy. Premier Anna Bligh said that the government has decided to repeal the sections of the South-East Queensland Water (Distribution and Retail Restructuring) Act 2009 which require the distribution and retail entities. “This means that Councils who wish to return to their previous structure will be able to do that and those that wish to retain the current entities can also do so.” Citing an “end to the blame game” and “to force local governments to accept their responsibility for water pricing”, the Premier’s move to possibly windup Unity Water comes hot on the heels of Campbell Newman’s pledge to do the same. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said that Premier Anna Bligh has been forced to reform the water system that she bungled. “When Campbell Newman entered the State Government scene he announced his four point plan to fix the water system. “Initially these changes were rejected by Labor but Campbell Newman held them to account and has forced a change,” he said. The Premier said the State Government would continue to produce and treat the bulk water that is delivered to the water utilities. “We will also continue to operate the water grid that shares water across the SEQ region and gives water security to all its citizens,” she said. “What this announcement means is that SEQ Councils will be responsible for how water is distributed and retailed and how much they charge. These decisions will rest solely with councils. “As I have listened to ratepayers across the South East they have said enough is enough and I agree. The blame game on water must end today.” However, Mr Powell warns that the LNP will need to see all of the details of the plan before they can be sure the changes will help Queenslanders or whether the Government is simply playing politics again. Mr Powell said this is the first big win for Campbell Newman and the people of South East Queensland. “Under the Can Do LNP Team, Queenslanders will power Queensland again, not politics.” A statement from Unitywater says that it’s “business as usual” for the water retailing entity. Unitywater CEO Jon Black said the matter was an issue for its owner councils to consider and Unitywater remained committed to providing high quality water supply and sewerage services to its customers in the Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast regions. “Despite the announcement by the Premier, which is a political issue, our staff will maintain their focus on delivering exceptional service to our customers,” Mr Black said.

Providing high quality bikeway and pathway networks is a key commitment for Sunshine Coast Council. Construction of a new 2.5 metre wide concrete pathway has started on the southern side of Connection Road at Mooloolah, between the dam entrance and Stevens Road. Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the $230,000 project had been joint-funded by council and the State Government’s South East Queensland Cycle Network Program. “This project will be a major benefit to the local community at Mooloolah and is part of council’s Active Transport Plan that sets out strategic planning for walking and cycling on the Sunshine Coast,” she said. “Constructing bikeway and walkway infrastructure like this across the region creates sustainable local transport systems and promotes active and healthy lifestyles.” Cr Grosskreutz said the Mooloolah bikeway works would be constructed on the road reserve and council would endeavour to avoid disturbances of large established trees. “Council will consult with adjoining property owners if any trees do require removal while works are in progress,” she said. Work is underway on the project that is expected to be finished within four weeks (weather permitting). Some property access may be affected during construction for short durations. Council officers will contact residents, where relevant, to discuss timing for access or parking if works are likely to block property entrances. Traffic management measures will also be in place during construction to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists. www.gcnews.com.au

Rail Update - commuters asked to meet government half way

After much anticipation Coast commuters can claim some victories following the release of the new Sunshine Coast timetable. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, who has campaigned on behalf of Coast commuters since November, acknowledges some improvements on the draft timetable but remains concerned the Coast commute has just become longer.

“Coast commuters have fought tooth and nail to be heard since the proposed timetable was released last year and the government appears to have listened, albeit selectively, to their many concerns. “The Minister has made a number of concessions including reinstating a 5.20pm outbound service and modifying some arrival times. But at the end of the day the reduction in express services will see most commuters spending more time on their commute,” Mr Powell said.

for healthy living

The newly released timetable, due for implementation from June 6, makes the following adverse changes: • A commuter commencing work at 8.00am will now need to depart Nambour at 5.50am (previously 6.00am); and • A commuter commencing work at 8.30am will now need to depart Nambour at 6.14am (previously 6.27am). “Previously peak hour Sunshine Coast services ran express from Bowen Hills to Caboolture, that’s now Northgate to Petrie, adding more than 10 minutes in each direction to most commutes. “Yes, it’s a victory of sorts. But at the end of the day, commuters were given guarantees that infrastructure upgrades would deliver shorter commutes. What we see in today’s timetable release puts pay to that promise once and for all,” Mr Powell said.

Christmas comes in April?

Free public transport buses at Christmas will continue for people on the Sunshine Coast after an overwhelming positive response by the public. Integrated Transport Portfolio Councillor Vivien Griffin said the initiative was part of a suite of measures to support public transport which was approved by council last week at a special budget meeting. “Working together to deliver more for the whole region has seen public transport improve across the Sunshine Coast,” Cr Griffin said. “The Public Transport Levy was introduced two years ago to provide a better service to get more people using buses, trains and Council cabs— and it’s working. “In 2008/09 there were 3,890,000 boarding; a year later there were more than 4,000,000 boardings and that figure is expected to increase again this year. “In the Free Holiday Bus period last Christmas, 200,000 people used Translink services across the coast—a 30 per cent increase on the previous year.” The decision means council will continue to promote and refine existing initiatives and introduce new ones: • Free holiday public transport (buses, Flexilinks and Council Cabs) • A permanent Sunshine Coast Airport bus service • Improvements to existing bus routes • Bus stop improvements • Development and introduction of a trial bus service between Coolum and Nambour • Confirmation of the Hinterland Connect service • Continuation of the successful Beerwah to Landsborough to Maleny bus trial • Continuation of the existing Flexilink services • Continuation of Council Cabs Council established a principle of ‘use it or lose it’ when it introduced new services through the transport levy, and on that basis four Flexilink services will cease from June 30 unless there’s a dramatic turnaround in patronage. Those routes are Buderim to Mountain Creek, Kunda Park/Buderim/Mons, Cooroy to Pomona and Mooloolah Valley to Glenview. However residents in these areas will be given every chance to show their support for these services before June 30. Sunshine Coast Council voted to keep the Public Transport Levy at $20.00.

Local Student on New TV Game Show Isabelle Westaway is a Year 7 student at Glasshouse Country Christian College who will very soon be seen on national TV. Isabelle saw an advertisement on ABC3 for 11 to 12-year-olds to enter a new game show called Go Lingo and went for it. “I went on the website they mentioned and played some on line games and then later on found out that I was accepted as a contestant entrant on the show,” Isabelle said. GoLingo is a high energy vocabulary game show using a combination of technology and physical games. Isabelle enjoyed the whole experience from the TV make up to jumping into a pit full of cubes where she had to spell out her name. The show also includes games focusing on indigenous Australia and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and language. “I had to learn a paragraph about the Gubbi Gubbi tribe and then was tested on it,” Isabelle said. Prizes included a Go Lingo T-shirt, a medal and a DVD but the biggest prize was the experience of being on TV – something Isabelle would like to do more of in the future. “I would love to one day host a TV show or become an actor,” she said. The episode featuring Isabelle will screen late April or early May.

Tiger treats at Australia Zoo April 1 brought birthday treats for Australia Zoo’s tigers. While most seven year olds get excited by the idea of eating ice-cream, Sumatran Tigers are no exception! Celebrating their seventh birthday, siblings Juma, Ranu and Singha were each treated to an ice-cream cake. Despite never before having had ice-cream, they did not shy away from a milky treat and as adult tigers, devoured their special celebratory cakes within seconds. Males Juma and Ranu, and female Singha, were raised at Australia Zoo, arriving in Queensland at just three weeks of age. Now considered to be in the prime of their lives, they are helping to save their species in the wild.

Beerwah Electronics damaged by runaway car

Beerwah Electronics owners Garth and Julie Stone are thanking their lucky stars that the car that went through their shop front didn’t do more damage than it did. Last Thursday, an out of control car jumped from the carpark of the Turner Village Shopping Centre on Peachester Road, Beerwah and crashed into the building between Beerwah Electronics and Simply Seafoods. Café Beerwah owner Rosalie Sullivan said she heard a loud crash as the car snapped a timber support post and ended up sideways under the awning. “I thought at first it was a crash on the road out the front, but then looked over the see the car had driven into the Beerwah Electronics Garth and Julie Stone front,” she said. outside their shop Garth and Julie are both fine and unhurt, and would like all their valued customers to know that they are trading as per usual and that there has been no damage to any of their stock or the inside of their store. “The worst we’d had happen before was a skateboard going through the glass. I’m just glad that the driver seemed to be OK and that we could have the repairs done quickly to the front so that we didn’t have to close at all,” said Garth. Garth and Julie weren’t sure whether a drive-through service is one that they would be looking at introducing anytime soon.

Volunteer Awards Ceremony

Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, is pleased to announce nominations have opened for the second annual Glass House Volunteer Award ceremony. The ceremony will be held to coincide with National Volunteer Week, this year being celebrated from May 9 - 15 with a theme of ‘Inspiring the Volunteer in You’. “The purpose of National Volunteer Week is to say ‘thanks’ to the many tireless volunteers that we have within our community. “The work performed by volunteers can sometimes be taken for granted or overlooked which is why this week of celebration and appreciation of their hard work is so important,” Mr Powell said. Mr Powell structures the Glass House Volunteer Awards to acknowledge the efforts of many volunteers rather than one, throughout the community. “This year I am pleased to say we have written to over 200 community groups and associations. Nominations close on Friday, April 29 and I encourage anyone wishing to make a nomination to contact my office. “Judging by the amount of community groups we have invited to submit a nomination, I am confident that we will have in excess of 150 people attending this event,” Mr Powell said. Following the ceremony fellow volunteers will have the chance to enjoy a cuppa and chat. This event is invitation only and will be held from 10.00am Friday, May 13, at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Steve Irwin Way Glass House Mountains. www.gcnews.com.au

Kerbside offenders urged to adhere Bring in your bin or get stuck with the consequences. That’s the warning from Sunshine Coast Council to businesses and residences that repeatedly leave their ‘wheelies’ where they shouldn’t be. Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said stickers would be placed on bins that were consistently left on the kerbside well after collection. “Council has received a flood of complaints from the community about bins being left in the street long after collection day or even permanently,” she said. “Residences and businesses that repeatedly forget will now be slapped with a sticker on their bin to remind them to do the right thing, or else.” Repeat offenders who fail to heed council’s warnings can face fines of up to $4,000 under State Government legislation.

Are you new to the area?

Cr Jones said the new warning stickers aimed to clean up the problem of abandoned bins before harsher penalties were called for. “This is about council wanting a cleaner, more visually appealing Sunshine Coast,” she said. “Bins on streets are unsightly and can create unhealthy situations when they’re knocked over in the street. “If you receive a sticker on your bin, do the right thing and bring it in once its emptied and there’ll be no more stickers and no possibility that you’ll be fined.” For information on what day your bins are collected, visit council’s website and click on ‘Waste collection,’ or call customer service on 5475 7272. * Copies of the new warning stickers are available on request

Following on from a really successful Welcome to Glasshouse Country Dinner organised by the Beerwah Lions Club to welcome new residents to the area, they are now busy planning for this year’s event. It will be held on Thursday, May 19 and invitations to attend the evening are now available at Real Estate Offices throughout Glasshouse Country. The dinner is held at the Beerwah Community Hall, at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start. There will be a superb menu catered by Pasta d' Vine’s Oskar and Suzanne with tickets $40.00 per person. Once again an interesting program planned by community guests and special guest entertainer Bush Poet John Major. Come along and meet other people new to this area as well as special guests and members of the Beerwah Lions Family.

John Fraser, killed in action in France In the lead-up to ANZAC Day it’s timely to remember two members of the extended Bankfoot family who were killed in action in France in World War 1 – brothers William (Willie) and John Fraser. Willie and John were the sons of Janet Fraser (nee Grigor) and John Fraser of Yandina. John, a teamster, enlisted in the Army in June 1917, aged 26. After training and then a long voyage in a troop ship, he arrived in Calais in April 1918. The letters he wrote to his cousin Mary make fascinating reading. “I got a smell of gas,” John wrote on May 20, 1918. “Although we carry small box respirators which are proof against gas, we either took our helmets off too soon or not soon enough . . . I have escaped scalds on the skin, but caught it in the eyes and chest . . . it was not bad enough to send me to blighty (England) . . . it was gas compressed into shells and fired through the air from a mile or so behind the line and when the shell hits the ground it bursts and the gas escapes and, being heavy, searches its way into the trenches. We give jerry (the Germans) gas at times and think our gas is worse on him than his on us.”John Fraser was in the 49th Battalion when he was killed on August 12, 1918, just four months after arriving in France and three months before the end of the War. He is buried in the French Military Cemetery near Albert in northern France. Next month – Willie Fraser. Please mark Sunday, June 5 in your diary when Bankfoot House will hold an Open Day as part of a Kero Lamp Heritage Trail, all within the wider Glasshouse Country Festival. From the Schools

Glasshouse Country Christian College Students gain valuable experience

Trying to decide what career to pursue in the future is never easy, but thanks to numerous helpful local businesses offering work experience to students, the choice can now be a lot clearer. Enthusiastic Glasshouse Country Christian College Year 10 students have spent a week with a variety of businesses, and we spoke to some of them. Courtney Sutton spent her work experience time with Beerwah Magic Trees Early Learning Centre. “I like children and when I leave school I want to become a childcare teacher - so this shows me what I’m getting into. It’s been a good experience so far. I’ve been in the nursery and now I’m in the toddler room. I really enjoyed the nursery though it gets boring at some points (when they fall asleep), and loud. I’ve been doing outside play. And I’ve bottle fed a few of the babies and played with them. I’ve enjoyed the experience; the best part is the babies.” Riley Williamson has been learning the ropes at King Tobin Lawyers. “In the future I hope to become a lawyer and I thought that doing work

experience here would give me a good perspective on how a law firm works. It’s been great so far. I’ve been researching, and just getting to know how everything works as a whole. I’ve enjoyed being here and getting the opportunity to work in a law firm.” Royce Hodgson knew Beerwah Computer Services was the business for him. “I’ve always been into computers and fixing computers, I’m always messing around with them, so I thought I’d like to learn from the experts. So far I’ve been doing web design and sorting out viruses; learning what virus protection to use on different systems. I’ve probably enjoyed the web design the most so far, that was fun. I can see myself doing this in the future.” Rebekah White, Beerwah Vets “I really enjoyed my time at Beerwah Vets. The staff were great at explaining the equipment, and helping me to understand more about my future. When I leave school I’m hoping to reach a high enough level of OP1, and pursue my lifelong dream. My week was filled with helping the nurses and surgeries, cleaning up before and after surgeries, and helping the animals, and I enjoyed every minute.”

My name is Hannah Boyer and I’m a student at Glasshouse Country Christian College. I am studying Year 10 and am interested in journalism and writing. I went to Glasshouse Country News for my work experience and was astounded by the possibilities before me. On my first day, I was greeted by a group of welcoming staff. My supervisor, Sarah, was friendly and taught me about greeting customers, aspects of accounts and billing, and also about setting up interviews, and writing stories. This experience also gave insight to many aspects of what goes on behind the scenes in newspaper work. Inserting catalogues and flyers, was a relatively fun job; that also consisted of sending out the papers to local businesses. As phones rang around me it made me wonder,

just how much work is actually put into making our weekly paper? The articles, the classifieds, the whole concept, and procedure is process driven, very orderly and considerate of all staff and the public. Organising the paperwork, filling client cards, and stamping envelopes was an experience. My most enjoyable day was Wednesday when I was able to attend interviews with Rosemary the news interviewer. I visited four businesses, Beerwah Magic Tree’s Early Learning Centre, King Tobin Lawyers, Beerwah Computing Services, and Beerwah Vets. Here we interviewed Glasshouse Country Christian College Year 10 students about their work experience. My time at Glasshouse Country News was a great experience and one I would like to repeat.

Peachester State School’s Environmental Club are hard at work with the first of their planned projects for the year. This is all thanks to the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network (RBCN) which has donated a trellis to grow the food plant (Pararistolochia praevenosa) for the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly larva, as part of the RBCN Education and Awareness program throughout schools in SEQ. Planting of these vines at the Peachester School is helping to build a corridor between existing colonies in the area. A special thanks is extended to Mr Ray Seddon for his expertise in building the structure and for helping the students to plant the Birdwing Butterfly Vine. Mr Seddon spoke at a recent school assembly about the importance of helping to increase the numbers of the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, with the majority of students volunteering to take a vine home in the near future. Also involved have been the Year 6 / 7 class who are at present cultivating more of the Birdwing Butterfly Vine while the Prep / Year 1 class is responsible for the watering of the vines on the trellis. It has proven to be a great project for the whole school to be proud of participating in.

Unity College Year 8 students participate in the Orientation Days activities

A new day, a new school, and new friends! For Year 8 students at Unity College, the Orientation Days last week were great fun as well as being a learning experience. Activities were held at the College and at Kings’ Beach and over the two days students participated in ‘Getting to Know You’ activities, ‘Organisational and Team Building’ activities and ‘Anti-Bullying’ tasks. They heard the story of Unity College, which is an ecumenical college supported by the local Catholic and Uniting Churches, and this year’s senior leaders gave them an insight into what it has to offer them academically, physically, spiritually, culturally and socially. “The students’ involvement, commitment and behaviour was of a very high standard,” said Year 8 Co-ordinator, Mark Harris. “Unity College is again blessed to have another wonderful group of young men and women in Year 8 and we look forward to watching them become the school‘s leaders for the future.”

The school has adopted the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly as an emblem which appears on the right sleeve of the school’s uniform. The students of the Environmental Club have actively participated in all Peachester students in aspects of this project within the School. action tending the vines One member, Jade comments, “it is so high that the vines will grow and the butterflies will come again, I think it is great.” Asher says, “the butterfly is a great thing for our community. I’m glad that the school has looked after the Birdwing Butterfly as we are planting vines in our school.” On behalf of Peachester State School we would like to thank the School’s Environmental Club students, Mrs Dorothy Robb and Mr Troy Pearce for all their hard work, and for their involvement in caring for the environment they live in. We certainly look forward to seeing butterflies gracing the grounds of the school, more frequently next year. The Club has also had to raise funds towards the project.

One for the business owners!

I am always amazed by the amount of businesses that aren't using a branded domain name for their business email address. What do I mean by this? Well, ideally, you should have an email address with a domain name that matches your business name – rather than the free email account you got when you signed up with an internet service provider (ISP). Think about how much more professional it appears to have an email address like info@joeblogsplumbing.com.au as opposed to joeblogsplumbing@bigpond.com. Why have a branded domain name? • It provides reassurance to your customer that you are a business that wants to be taken seriously. A business that has purchased a domain name and set up emails obviously plans to stick around for a while. • It removes the need for changing email addresses if you change your ISP. You can jump between different ISP’s all the time and keep the same email address. • It ensures continuity across all of your business communication which is important from a branding perspective. It’s very easy to set this up. You simply need to purchase a domain name and email hosting. Domain names can be purchased from any reputable registrar – make sure you stick with an Australian company as there are some dodgy ones out there. We recommend either Net Registry or Crazy Domains. Often when you purchase a domain name you will be provided with options for email hosting as an add-on service. If you already have a website for your business, having email accounts should be included in the price for your website hosting. If you need any help – feel free to call the techs at Total Microsystems and they can do it all for you!

Computer Sales, Service & Support Quality, no-nonsense IT Support for your business - ITS THAT SIMPLE!

We suffered through 7... we struggled with 8... and now here it is: Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9. This little gem wreaks havoc on webpages that until now looked quite nice! I’ve spoken before about the benefits of the many free online services that are accessible through your web browser. Unfortunately these aren’t much good to you if they don’t work. If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, then the latest Internet Explorer version should have hit your PC in the last few days, as an optional update that you can click to install. As with all major new Microsoft products, I would generally recommend waiting a few months until the first Service Pack comes out, featuring all the bug fixes and improvements that should have been part of the original product, but weren’t. If you’re like me, however, and are desperate to have the latest and “greatest” then there is at least some good news - Internet Explorer 9 features a little icon at the top of the screen that looks like a broken page. Click this and you will enter “Compatibility Mode”, meaning that websites will, for the most part, still look and act as they did before you upgraded. So why would anyone, anywhere, actually want to upgrade to Internet Explorer 9? Apparently it’s the power and performance. The software supposedly makes use of your graphics hardware to improve animation and rendering speed. You can also do a couple of little extras like dragging websites straight out of your browser to place on your desktop or toolbar as links. Overall, I’m sure this browser will become the norm over the next few years, but don’t rush to get your hands on it just yet.

How exciting the lead up to the Glasshouse Country Festival has become since my last update. The registration of exhibitors for the Sustainability & Garden Expo has been steady and we would like to have all exhibitor registration finalised by April 16. This will enable the program to be printed accurately and on time. As with everything, the paper work takes a little time to be completed so if you wish to have an exhibit make contact now. The program for the expo will provide an interesting and exciting experience for the complete family, from the grands to the young fry. The 30 specialty workshops to be presented throughout the day will provide a opportunity for you to learn about all manner of topics on the environment, how you can recycle in your garden and in the home, how to manage weeds, how to manage energy with gas and solar systems and most importantly how to look after your own health. We will have lots of fun things for the young people to do and a regular visit to our festival website will keep you informed. The Sustainable Schools Awards, was an initiative we implemented in conjunction with the 2010 expo. All schools were recognised for the effort they contributed to the awards. We have refined the awards this year in conjunction with Education Queensland’s sustainability coordinator. The awards are available to all education facilities between Elimbah and Glenview and Peachester. If your school has not entered in the 2011 awards we encourage parents, students and teachers to become involved and be in the running to have your school recognised on one of the perpetual award trophies. The awards coordinator has been in contact with all of the schools in Glasshouse Country so help your children’s school be recognised by registering your Sustainable School program. The list of events being registered from all Glasshouse Country communities as festival events is increasing by the day. The weekend of June 4 and 5 will be a great follow up to the expo. The Heritage Steam Train will be coming from Brisbane and running local trips so watch GCNews and the festival website for details. Bankfoot House will be holding an open day on Sunday, June 5, displaying all the history of the Glass House area. The Beerwah Lions club will be conducting an Art Show at the new Glass House Mountains School hall. It is not too late to involve your community so visit the website register your event. To celebrate this great Glasshouse Country visit www.glasshousecountyfestival.com.au to register or phone the coordinator on 0427 606 240. www.gcnews.com.au

APRIL 13 2011

Last Sunday, members from the Glasshouse Toastmasters Club took a trip to Kilcoy to participate in the competition of New Speakers, Interpretive Reading and Tall Tales Contests. There are six clubs in our area and after the ‘in club competitions’ the winners went on to compete in Kilcoy. Congratulations to Chris Magee, Roy Phillips and Robert Thompson who did us proud and were place getters in the New Speakers and Tall Tale Contest. Going to competition days, makes you realise that you belong to a big Toastmaster’s family, and it is really nice to catch up with your friends on those days. There is a lot of talking and a lot of laughter, we are not lost for words. But let me tell you my story. Imagine stepping into a small elevator in a quiet hotel, late at night. You push the ‘Up’ button and discover someone else has stepped inside too. It’s ….the original ABBA band member you’d just applauded – an hour earlier, with 18,000 other fans. What do you say? Should you say anything? In some parts of the world, celebrity sightings are more common, but no matter how often you see them, there’s always that one famous person who will take your breath away. Even the smoothest toastmaster can suffer a tongue-tied moment when caught off-guard by a close encounter with a star. I was not a Toastmaster at the time, so I said nothing. Sadly enough I did not meet anyone famous over the past years, but whenever Benny Andersson steps into my lift again, I will tell him that I met him more than 25 years ago and apologise for pretending to not recognise him. Maybe one day your idol will step into your lift, if so, let your confidence gained during Toastmaster meetings give you something to talk about for months. Of course you have to join a club first and I think that the Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Club is just the right one for you. Give it a go. We meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month in the hall of Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah, at 9.00am for a 9.30am start. Like to know more? Give me a call on 5496 9855.

The marvellous view from the garden of Theo and Rita Beenders made a wonderful venue for the March meeting. The dahlias, african violets, ferns, orchids and other assorted plants in the shade houses were pretty good too. John Gyzemyter introduced guest speaker Dr Tom Baster, accompanied by his wife Ann, who is assistant secretary of the Queensland Council of Garden Clubs, and his sister Chris Brooks, visiting from Michigan, USA. Dr Tom Baster was a GP for many years and his topic was edible weeds. Many of our common garden weeds are edible, supplying good nutrition and are believed to have medicinal qualities. One of the best common weeds to eat is Portulaca Oleracea, also known as Purslane, munyeroo , or pigweed. The internet or books is a good place to find identification of which weeds are safe to eat. A lively question and answer session followed. Results of the competition bench for February, 1st Coral Beutel, 2nd Cath Howitt. The next meeting will be on Thursday, April 21 at the Peachester Hall, at 9.00am. Flower of the month is a perennial. We will have morning tea, competition bench and a short meeting until 11.00am, followed by a visit to Mountain View nursery on Steve Irwin Way where Rosemary Hambleton will be guest speaker. Visitors and new members welcome. For more information phone 5496 9169.

Quick have your say

Do you want to live in a unique country town, or a copy cat town, like Beerwah is slowly becoming, thus losing its uniqueness. Do you like fresh air, trees, hills, views, gardens, and wildlife, and are happy with transport, essential business, and school etc here? Are you proud of our 'special' playground, and welcome sign at the entrance to Landsborough, our historic town, where kids can have fun, picnics, etc amongst tall trees, and wildlife in a real natural setting...Yes? Then pick up a pen, phone, email, and insist. If MacDonald’s have to come here, and most business people want it, please not at the entrance to our peaceful, unspoilt town. The letter (GCNews April 6) titled 'Members need more answers' shows a clear lack of knowledge about the organsition of the Beewwah RSL and Citizens Memorial Club Inc. The Glasshouse Country Bowls Club has been wholly owned by the Beerwah RSL Citizens Club since the two were amalgamated about 10 years ago. The questions raised in that letter could be put to a Special General Meeting which can be called by the number of members required by the club constitution. If the author of the letter is a financial member of the citizens club he / she can canvas other like minded members to collect the numbers to call the meeting. Of course the author could always just ask members of the committee face to face to answer the questions posed in the letter. Name supplied Beerwah

As a member of the Beerwah RSL Club, I wish to make the following observations; I am not a member of any committee. The management of the Beerwah RSL Club is being conducted by a Management Committee constituted in a manner not in accord with the Club's Rules. Rule 11 requires that the Club committee include certain office bearers elected and nominated by the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch. For over 12 months Club committees have consistently refused to allow those members to

take their place. This has given rise to a situation where an unconstitutional committee is managing the Club and such a body can have no authority to act and arguably should have placed itself in Administration. The Sub Branch committee has made several attempts to have its nominated members take their place on the Club committee and has made many attempts to negotiate. On two significant occasions, the most recent on March 22, solutions were proposed, accepted by the Sub Branch representatives but on each occasion the Club committee declined to proceed. Proponents of the Club committee's position use a provision in the Associations Incorporation Act to justify their position but ignore that provision in the Act that allows a body to operate under 'own rules'. The Sub Branch members have been advised by their committee of a legal opinion that the Club rules are not inconsistent with the Act. Statements emanating from the Club committee, including an advertisement in this paper, have suggested certain 'facts'. Some are: 1. The Sub Branch has evicted the Club without reason. Those members of the Club committee who are members of the Sub Branch must have known since November 28, 2010, when the Sub Branch members voted to terminate the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Inc lease, why that action had been taken. 2. RSL Qld refused to intervene, etc. The meeting of March 22 was sponsored by the CEO of RSL Queensland and the CEO of Clubs Qld. 3. The assets of the club belong to the members. It is worth noting that the club refurbishment of 2001 (costing in excess of $1.2 million) was paid for by the Sub Branch, as was the infrastructure, kitchen and bars. 4. The club is to close its doors, which a letter to Club members dated March 1, 2011 implies. This is not so. The Sub Branch intends to have the enterprise continue and where possible, staff be retained. It has prepared a detailed business plan and secured approval to raise capital. All current memberships will be recognised. 5. A ‘few faceless individuals’ want to control the club. The Sub Branch meetings are open to all of its members, the proceedings of meetings are recorded and the identity of Committee members is known to Sub branch members. No one is faceless. 6. That the Club committee was ‘duly elected’ by its members. It is still contravenes Rule 11. Three important factors need to be considered. First, the unwillingness of the Club committee to act in accord with Rule 11 placed the Sub Branch in a difficult position: Either to condone an unconstitutional situation or endeavour to rectify. Having been unsuccessful with attempts to achieve a constitutional solution, the Sub Branch members voted to terminate the lease. The Sub Branch committee is required to carry out the members' intentions. Second, Returned Services League clubs were not set up for the benefit of the community, rather, as a means to raise funds for the welfare of Returned Service men and women. This is an important and ongoing requirement, especially with current ADF commitments. Third, the Club committee has failed it members. It did not inform Club members of the gravity of the situation until too late. Members could question how much of Club funds have been and will be expended on legal fees pursuing this matter. Further, unconstitutional members of the Club committee have had the power to prevent www.gcnews.com.au

this action by recognising that the interests of the Club are greater than the importance of their position and resigning, thus allowing a lawful committee to form, enabling a constitutional rewrite of the Rules to prevent such a situation from arising in future. Alas, it is now too late. P. Harrington, Peachester

Re: Cagey AGM

I wish to respond to the comments made by the writer of 'Cagey AGM' which appeared in the Glasshouse Country News on April 6. I thoroughly refute the accusation that the election of office bearers at the annual general meeting of the Beerwah R.S.L. and Citizens' memorial Club held November, 30, 2010, was by proxy and not in accordance with the correct procedure. I personally presided over the election of office bearers and all positions were declared vacant. There were 11 nominations received for 10 positions. However, one nomination was withdrawn prior to the meeting. I then said that we had one nomination for president, secretary, etc., and I personally introduced the successful candidates who were each elected unopposed. I applaud the stance taken by the management committee in that they are protecting the rights of all club members and the assets of the Beerwah R.S.L. and Citizens' Memorial Club. The present management committee is exercising proper governance by complying with the Association' Incorporation Act which requires that to be elected to the management committee of the Citizens' Club, a person must be elected at a general meeting of the Citizens' Club and not by the 150-odd members of the Sub-Branch imposing their representatives on the 3,500 plus members of the Citizens' Club. 'Name Withheld' has the audacity to talk about conflict of interest. What does he / she call the R.S.L. Sub branch being the landlord, trying to control their tenant which is the Citizens' Club? How many tenants would rent a house from a landlord and then be silly enough to allow the landlord to take control of their bank account! Terry Little Chairman Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

Re: Members need more answers

I would like the opportunity to correct statements concerning the Beerwah R.S.L. Citizens Club and the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club which appeared in GCNews on April 6 titled 'Members Need More Answers'. The first point is: The Glasshouse Country Bowls Club was not purchased by the Beerwah R.S.L. Citizens Club - it was gifted to them when the two organisations merged some 10 years ago. The management committee of the Bowls Club promotes and runs the game of bowls at the said premises and the Beerwah R.S.L. and Citizens Club manages all other activities. The second point is: There are not two separate organisations. The bowls club is a section of the Beerwah R.S.L. and Citizens Club. The bowls section is in a sound financial position. We are increasing our bowls membership and we have increased the number of persons on the green. The third point is: The Citizens Memorial Club is moving its business to the Glasshouse bowls premises and will be bringing professional staff with them as well as their already established business. The Citizens Club will benefit by not www.gcnews.com.au

having to pay approximately $300,000 to the Sub branch annually. The fourth point is: At the AGM held in November, 2010, the current committee was elected unopposed. Personal employment details are subject to privacy but total salaries are available from the annual financial report. As previously stated, the Beerwah Citizens Club will be managing the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club. The fifth point is: All accounts, including that of the bowls club, are under the control of the Beerwah R.S.L. and Citizens Club. The sixth point is: With regard to storage of poker machines and other fitments / furniture, all costs will be revealed in the annual financial statement. The seventh point is: The Bowls Club believes that this venture can only benefit all its members and the community at large by providing a more up-to-date premises, facilities to go with that and more patrons into the club environment. The eighth point is: The bowls club committee has been shown concept plans and these are currently undergoing the usual approval process. The ninth point is: If members took the time to attend all meetings and to listen carefully to what was said, rather than listening to hearsay and gossip, they would be more informed of the current situation Terry Little Chairman Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

RE: Ann Ross support for off road recreational vehicles

Thank you, William, for your feedback on my article of April 6. My comment in the Glasshouse Country News on March 23 was…identifying stand alone economic opportunities such as becoming a recreational vehicle friendly area… My statement was not describing off road recreational vehicles. It was referring to the caravan and motor home sector or, as it is often described, the RV sector. The rationale behind this statement was based on the fact there are estimated to be 333,000 RVs registered in this country, with only 70,000 - 80,000 on our roads at any given time. Their average spending is now $572.00 per week, the total spending by domestic and international RV tourists being an estimated $8 billion per annum. Currently the RV sector is the fastest-growing and most stable tourist sector in Australia. The myth that they are ‘free-loading penny pinchers’ has been disproved. Today they represent a very lucrative income stream, prompting councils Australia-wide to encourage them to visit suitable areas within their boundaries. Regarding the Pumicestone Passage and Caloundra South, I, like most attendees at the recent Caloundra South Forum, was disappointed with the Urban Land Development Authority representatives’ presentation. I believe that master planning of future communities is innovation at its best; in this instance though, we all need to take a ‘long sighted’ look at the future generational and environmental impacts of this project. Ann Ross Division 1 Candidate Sunshine Coast Council

Entrance to Glass House Mountains Has anyone noticed or might I say, seen the entrance to Glasshouse Mountains lately? We

have a brand new Visitor Information Centre that cost a small fortune, you have to look sideways at to see or read the wording. It stands in the centre of the median strip on the entrance off The Glasshouse Tourist Drive (now called some other name), which reminds me, it was changed extremely fast, faster than the holes are repaired in our roads. Enough of the frivolities, have you seen the median strips leading into our village of the Glasshouse Mountains lately? Then you are very lucky indeed, the stop signs leading out of our village will very quickly be unreadable, the grass is so high and dangerous, an absolute disgrace. We require someone in Council to push our area for the good of the area, they need to fight for us, look at our local problems, address these in an efficient and effective manner and make sure they are done, not just today, but tomorrow and the tomorrows to come. The manner in which these pot holes are fixed is a strong talking point, the method used currently is just an absolute waste of our rate payers money. Roys Road east of the cemetery has two extremely dangerous pot holes, a car wheel would vanish and cause a major accident. The Steve Irwin Way at the Zoo and north toward Landsborough is also extremely dangerous. Last week after that short sharp shower, water was lying in the wells of the roadway and even at 80 km's an hour, a car will aquaplane - it's extremely dangerous and requires attention. I notice that there is apparently provision for a light for that waste of rate payers money at the Glasshouse Village entrance, just how long will that take? Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

Re: Members need more answers

In ‘You Said It’ GCNews April 6 ‘Members need more answers’ the writer said, "The club (Glasshouse Country Bowls Club) is owned by the members of the Beerwah RSL (Citizens Club I presume), as it was purchased with funds produced by its members." Since they know this as fact, could they or someone please inform me and other readers of the following questions? 1. How much money was paid for the Bowls Club? 2. Who or which organisation received the said money? 3. What happened to the money that the Bowls Club had in its accounts at that time? 4. And last, where is all the paperwork that shows the actual signing of the contracts, by whom and to who or what organisation the Bowls Club was signed over to? Every time in the past, as far as I am aware, when someone within the club has tried to find out these answers, they have come up against a brick wall. If someone could please supply these answers I am sure we would all be much happier. Kevin Beasley Glass House Mountains

Seniors Forum

Parliamentary News

The annual Sunshine Coast Seniors Forum will be held again this year in late July. This is the 11th annual Seniors Forum, and will include various expert speakers and displays from around 30 organisations that assist seniors in the community. To RSVP for the event or for further details please contact my office on 5444 4888.

Fraud Initiatives

New initiatives have been introduced to help stamp out fraud against Australian Government agencies like Centrelink. The new initiatives include simpler Commonwealth Fraud Control Guidelines that outline the obligations of the agencies and also a new central online portal, called Commonwealth Fraud Control Information Online, where agencies and the public can locate information about fraud control. Figures from the Australian Institute of Criminology’s 2008-09 Fraud Against the Commonwealth report shows that in 2008-09 there were some 800,000 incidents of fraud against the Commonwealth. The Fraud Against the Commonwealth report is available online at www.aic.gov.au and information about the new Fraud Control Guidelines and Fraud Control Information is available at https://fraud.govspace.gov.au

Pyjamas wanted

My office is still collecting pyjamas for the Pyjama Foundation’s annual collection drive. A new pair of clean and comfortable pyjamas is comforting for children who find themselves in foster care in a strange environment. The foundation is seeking brand new pyjamas in all sizes from baby to adult. Pyjamas can be dropped off at my office at the Cartwright Centre, corner of Point Cartwright Drive and Nicklin Way, Buddina, between 9.00am and 4.00pm, Monday to Friday.

The last Parliamentary sitting week for March 2011 will remain imbedded in the mind of all Queenslanders for some time. The news that Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman would run for a seat in state politics with a view to eventually becoming the leader of the LNP was welcomed by my Parliamentary colleagues and feedback from the public since has also shown great support for this change. I acknowledge and respect the hard work of our former leadership team in John-Paul Langbroek and Lawrence Springborg but I am excited about the future for the LNP and the Queensland people. As the party embarks upon a new journey I remain committed to doing the best that I can for the people of Glass House, irrespective of their political beliefs. If you are interested in seeing some of my speeches from this sitting week, and many others, please visit my website www.andrewpowell.com.au and go to the ‘Speeches’ section.

Glass House Volunteer Awards

I am pleased to announce nominations have opened for the second annual Glass House Volunteer Award ceremony. The ceremony will be held to coincide with National Volunteer Week, this year being celebrated from May 9 to 15 with a theme of ‘Inspiring the Volunteer in You’. The purpose of National Volunteer Week is to say ‘thanks’ to the many tireless volunteers that we have within our community. Rather than one overall winner these awards are designed to recognise the efforts of many volunteers throughout our community. Nominations close on Friday, April 29 so there is plenty of time to get your nomination in. Please contact my office on 5435 2013 or email me at glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au for a nomination form. I will be having a morning tea in celebration on Friday, May 13 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club.

Have you written your Will?

This is one of those jobs that most of us just put on the backburner for another day and I can’t stress enough how important it is for us to have one. This year Queensland will be celebrating its first Wills Week from May 3 - 7. Public Trustee offices across Queensland will be having sausage sizzles and other events throughout this week to promote the reasons why we should have a Will. Check website www.willsweek.pt.qld.gov.au for more information.

Locals collecting local stories

We all have fascinating stories, but are not often asked to tell them. They could be family stories, shared memories, important events and local history. The Story Project Glass House Mountains based organisation is partnering with Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to collect and celebrate the everyday stories that shape our lives. Helen Wilkinson, Director of The Story Project, is excited by the idea of capturing local stories, as she believes the simple act of sharing stories helps bring people together. “We invite people to share a 40 minute conversation with someone they know and record a great story to create a dynamic audio portrait of Australian life, Helen said. “The Story Project is about ordinary people telling their stories. At its heart is the audio recording of a conversation between two people who are close. “A mother telling her daughter about her childhood on the farm, a husband and wife recounting how they fell in love, or neighbours sharing memories of the Queensland floods.

"Any story that is meaningful for the two to share together. We provide the opportunity to record the story professionally, free of charge. Helen said. The Story Project is currently looking for people over 12, regardless of background or life experience, to come and share their stories. The Story Project will be recording at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre in early May, Caloundra Events Centre late May / early June and Eumundi’s ‘Sunny Brae’ house (Eumundi showgrounds) in late June. More information on times, dates and how to book are available at www.thestoryproject.org.au An information session about The Story Project will be held at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday, April 13 from 5.30pm.

Be challenged NOT to lose weight

Fitness

The coronary health improvement project (CHIP) is a community health initiative aimed at helping people to lose weight. Follow CHIP guidelines for 30 days and eat all you want – and imagine the feeling of triumph and achievement if you discover that people can’t even force you to stop losing weight. Most people who attend a CHIP program and follow the guidelines, find they lose weight without feeling they’re on a diet. For many people, symptoms of lifestyle diseases like heart disease, diabetes and obesity start to subside and there are some very excited people. If you would like to be among that group, go to one of the free information sessions starting soon in Caloundra. The CHIP program is operated by a not for profit organisation. transport, resource management and the new category, greening the arts. This year’s awards will include a Hall of Fame Award for the first time to recognise outstanding ongoing contributions or innovations in sustainability as well as award categories including the Golden Glossy – Excellence in Sustainable Design Award, Resource Saver Award, Edible Landscape Award, Sustainable Transport Award, Living Smart Solutions Award, Enviro-Business Award and Greening the Arts Award. “With council’s commitment to becoming Australia’s most sustainable region these awards are one of the most important on our annual calendar as they recognise those in our community who are striving to build a more sustainable Sunshine Coast and provide inspiration for those looking to minimise their impact on our environment,” said Cr Jones. For more information and for businesses and residents wishing to submit entries for the awards online, go to www.livingsmartawards.net.au Entries close at 5.00pm on May 20.

Get your camera out and start snapping If you love capturing images of our beautiful local scenery, then you will want to make sure you have your camera with you all the time so you don’t miss an opportunity to get a wining shot for the Rotary Calendar photographic competition. The competition this year will again celebrate the unique natural environment of our region, with the photographic theme being ‘Fauna in and around the Glass House Mountains’. The successful images will grace the months of the 2012 Rotary Charity Calendar. Images (up to a maximum of three per entrant) must be delivered to the Beerwah Library along with the completed entry form, by Tuesday, May 3 at 5.00pm (no exceptions). If you do your best work on the other side of the lens, then you can have your say as part of the People’s Choice awards, with a display at the Rotary Glasshouse Country Sustainability

and Garden Expo, on Sunday, May 29, at the Beerwah Community Hall and Turner Park, from 9.00am – 4.00pm. So, get your camera out and capture the beauty of the animals in our region. There are great prizes up for grabs for the 12 images chosen by the judges as well as the image chosen by the people’s choice. All visitors to the photo display who vote for the people’s choice will go into the draw for a wonderful prize, so don’t forget to visit the Beerwah Library to view the display of images from Wednesday, May 4 – June 8 and cast your vote for the image which you would like to see on the front cover of the 2012 calendar. Entry forms will be available soon, keep an eye out in Glasshouse Country News for details in coming weeks. For enquiries, contact Heather, 0413 809 776 or Ilia on 5494 0888. what's the sense behind it at all? The number of sizeable farms in our local community require equally sizeable labour numbers. In most cases, a farm with more than 25 full time employees will pay payroll tax, adding rising pressure to the viability of our agricultural industries. While some exemptions apply for trainees, apprentices and community development employment, there's very little way of avoiding the tax. Sadly, the Queensland Government offer a greater number of rebates on company payroll tax to feature films, telemovies and television series (including reality drama and mini-series). The last time I checked, the television and film industries don't contribute to the social wellbeing and health of our nation. With increasing food prices already being felt by households nation-wide and Queensland elections imminent, abolishing or exempting farmers from this unnecessary tax would certainly be a good start towards sustaining profitable farms, job numbers and lower fruit and vegetable prices. Come to think of it, abolishing the tax all together sounds like an even better idea for the prosperity of businesses across the state.

The Dirt

Trina Erbacher • Intuitive Guidance & Insight (Dip. Prof. Couns)

The Living Smart Glossies have jagged a sensational speaker for the June 17 awards night. Nominations for the Living Smart Glossies Awards have just opened, along with the announcement that Dr Karl Kruszelnicki will be the keynote speaker at the ceremony. “We had some amazing entries last year and will be lucky enough to have two of the winners with us at the announcement for this year’s awards, as well as confirming Dr Karl as the keynote speaker,” said Ben McMullen, Sunshine Coast Council’s Manager of Environment Initiatives. Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said she was delighted that the high profile awards had attracted such a relevant speaker in Dr Karl who will share his views on the importance of sustainability practices, the interconnectedness of the climate to human achievements and cover a number of interesting scientific developments which will no doubt enthral his audience. The awards recognise and celebrate the sustainability achievements of Sunshine Coast residents, businesses and community groups in building design, construction, edible landscaping,

Ever since the arrival of Australia's first Governor in 1788, Australia has had ‘tax’. Governor Phillip's Royal instruction gave him the power to impose taxes if the colony needed it, and so the trend began. The nation’s original taxes were imposed on the importation of spirits, wine and beer. It wasn't until 1880 that Australian's were first charged a tax on income. While some taxes have come and gone, for example Death Duties which were abolished in Queensland in 1977, other taxes (right or wrong) have plagued our hard earned incomes. One current tax called payroll tax, leaves the average person scratching their head. The Queensland State Government penalise businesses that pay over $1 million dollars in wages each year an additional 4.75 per cent tax to those that have a payroll of less than $1 million. Granted that Queensland has the lowest payroll tax in Australia, you still have to ask

Rosemary’s plant of the month

We Care About Our Environment

Pseudocalymma alliaceum (Garlic Vine)

Welcome to the first of our monthly columns in Glasshouse Country News, where we’ll introduce you to some of our projects and activities, as well as some of the plants, animals and environmental issues of the local area. Jan Kesby, Coordinator/Manager

A climbing plant which is best suited to warm sunny conditions. Spectacular in bloom, it develops massed clusters of flowers that emerge mauve and turn to pink. The leaves smell of garlic when crushed – hence the common name. Great for covering a fence, shed or grown over an arbour. Plants available at Mountain View Garden Centre.

Mooloolah Waterwatch

If you would like more information on this plant or any others drop in and see Rosemary at Mountain View Garden Centre, 1094 Steve Irwin Way, Glasshouse Mtns. Phone 5438 7779.

Mooloolah Waterwatch is extending its water quality monitoring program to Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House. All the waterways from these towns end up in the Pumicestone Passage, which last year received poor results in the Ecosystem Health Monitoring Program report. As more people move to the Coast and particularly with South Caloundra on the horizon, there needs to be some serious changes to stop the pollution entering the streams and Pumicestone Passage. If anyone in these areas would like to be involved in monitoring a site along Coochin, Coonowrin Tibrogargan, or Mellum creeks please contact Mooloolah Waterwatch.

Mooloolah Landcare

Our current Green Army team is working around Mooloolah cleaning up parks, waterways and planting trees. They have proven to be a dynamic, hard working team with a passion to improve the environment. Their 20 week work program runs until July 17 when we hope to get them all employed. Two of the team have already secured jobs which is a great outcome for these people who have been long-term unemployed. If you see us around the Catchment give us a toot for support.

Lillypilly (Acmena smithii; Syzygium smithii) This beautiful lillypilly can grow to 20m tall in a rainforest but generally to 3-6m in the average garden. It grows naturally along watercourses, has lovely green leaves with flushes of pink new growth. The edible berries can be pink, purple or white. This is a lovely tree for any garden and can be used as a hedge. Just remember that all lillypillys should never be grown next to plastic water or drainage pipes, they love getting their roots into wet areas. This tree is on special for the month of April at $1.50 per tube. Please mention this column to get the discount.

GUARANTORS AND FIRST HOME OWNERS

What are the rights and responsibilities of firsthomebuyers and guarantors? Guarantors are usually responsible for 20% of the total home loan. In other words, if the property cost $400,000 then the guarantor (generally mum and dad) would guarantee 20% of that amount (i.e. $80,000) against their own home. To do this the bank takes a mortgage over the guarantor’s house and generally the guarantee is limited to the 20% amount. The borrower (the first home owner) is still responsible for the actual loan (the whole amount of the mortgage and the repayments). However, in the event of defaults www.gcnews.com.au

(that may result in sale of the home) the bank will also go to the guarantor for any shortfall (up to the amount of their guarantee). In worst case scenarios this may mean that the guarantor might have to sell their house to pay this amount. How do both parties make sure the guarantors assets are best protected from seizure by the bank? The bank is required by law to advise the guarantor of any defaults on the guaranteed loan so they can address any issues with repayments and avoid possible further action by the

bank. Timely payments will always ensure that there is no recourse to either party and it’s also important for both parties to discuss what would happen if there were any difficulties making repayments. This may mean keeping some savings aside or having an agreement that if the first home buyer runs into any difficulty that the guarantor can assist them temporarily. How do you keep the lines of communication open so money and family don’t make a bad mix? Guarantors need to be aware of their liabilities. All guarantors

are required to seek independent legal and financial advice, to make sure they are aware of all aspects of the loan contract they are entering into - it is also a good idea to clarify this in writing.

The following issues should be covered when considering these types of loans: 1. What happens if the first home owner cannot make a payment? 2. When should Call Teresa Harrison today. the first home owner advise the 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 guarantor of any difficulties www.smartline.com.au/tharrison with repayments? 3. You Said It Continued from page 25 RSL done deal

Well it looks like the Beerwah RSL never had any intention of staying in Beerwah! It was all a done deal even before the public meeting, and we were taken for a ride! I will not be a member of the Beerwah RSL or the bowls club as there has been too much dishonesty. I certainly will not join the new club taking over, as it seems to me, they were just as cagey and just intend making it easier to gamble. R Batty Beerwah

Re: last week’s letters

The two letters in last week’s GCNews whose names were “supplied” (but not printed) have caused more hurt for the staff and members of the RSL Club, and the Beerwah community in general. Obviously these nameless people know how misinformed they are or they would have had the courage to put their name to their letters. 42 |

| APRIL 13 2011

I am the Operations Manger of the Club at the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club and have been a member of staff for more than 18 years. I was raised in Glass House Mountains and grew up with the men and women who built these community clubs. My family and a lot of other locals spent a great deal of time and money at the Glasshouse Bowls Club, so I think I am well qualified to give my opinion. The Glasshouse Country Bowls Club merged with the Citizens Club 10 years ago. It was not purchased; I know this as I was part of the Club Management Team at the time. It was not the choice of the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Club to close down its business in Beerwah, but that of the landlord, when they evicted the community club from the leased premises. By the time you read this the Citizens club will have moved out of the Beerwah premises and, as instructed removed all club assets. The Club is now operating from the Glasshouse Country Bowls club. This will be a growing process, but our community needs to be assured the club will grow and I will continue to be part of this process.

Whether it is as an employee or as a member or both - only time will tell, but no matter what happens in the future I will remain loyal to this community Club. In relation to the AGM there was no vote because only 10 people nominated for the 10 positions. Those nominees were declared elected unopposed, as happens in any organisation. If you had been there and paid attention to the proceedings you would have known this fact. If you want to know something then find out. Do not speculate or listen to other misinformed people. Such reckless comments only serve to upset the hard working staff that has remained here, trying to do their jobs while they still had them. This dispute has gone on long enough. Let’s move on and make the best of a bad situation. Because the Club owns its premises at the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club, we can be assured it will remain a community club and no-one will be able to take it away from us again. Yes, we’re still walking and would love you to join us. This group has now been walking for over five years and for some of us that’s well over 3,000 kilometres covered. We walk each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30am for about an hour. We meet at Martin Rungert Park, right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes about the local area. It’s a great way to start the day and to meet new friends. This is a Heart Foundation group activity with certificates being awarded for the number of walks completed. You

don’t have to walk every day, or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can. Please consider joining our friendly little group for a great start to the day. We do hope to see you soon.

We are now into the fourth month of this year and Easter is just around the corner. This year has had a tumultuous beginning. Floods all over Australia, earthquakes in Christchurch and Japan, floods in South America. The list goes on. One of the things we notice is the magnitude of some of the disasters. Greater than ever before. There are also issues around the world with the economy resulting in riots. Where will all this end and what is all this saying to us?

In the Bible we read that these things will happen (see Matthew 24). It says these are the beginnings of birth pains just like with a pregnant woman. Jesus is talking about his own return to earth and the destruction of Jerusalem. Is Jesus coming near? Well it is nearer then last year and from the magnitude and frequency of the disasters there is certainly some indication that something could happen. When we think of the people in Japan; thousands died in a matter of minutes which is shocking news to us. Only people who were there really understand what it was like to go through an experience like this. God is saying these things will happen. Trust in me, get to know me. Then and only then can we have peace within ourselves. This peace comes when we are forgiven and when we start to walk with Jesus who came to save us. Something worth considering.

Scrapheap Adventure Ride Tina Eccles of Peachester will start an adventure on April 18 when she participates in the Scrapheap Adventure Ride to raise funds for the Downs Syndrome Foundation. The rules of the ride are to get a motorcycle for less than $1,000 and ride to a predetermine location; each year a different location. “This year we will ride to Cameron Corner (corner post of NSW, QLD and SA) a ride of approximately 1400 kilometres each way from the Sunshine Coast,” Tina explains. Tina will be accompanied by fellow Sunshine Coaster, Narelle Rimmer, on her Suzuki adventure bike. “We are undertaking this ride without accompanying crew,” said Tina. “So far this year there are 35 riders registered to ride from many different locations. I have built a modified Sachs Madass 50cc scooter to complete this ride. The bike has attracted a lot of attention wherever I have taken it,” she said. You can link to the ride web site to make a donation to the Downs Syndrome Foundation www.thankq.net.au/tq_community_dsyna/ Challenge.aspx If you’d like to see the Madass video, go to this website www.scrapheapadventureride. com.au/2011/02
