Story of Landsborough retold with new exhibition

If you aren’t familiar with the rich origins of Landsborough, it might be time you visited the Landsborough Museum, where a new exhibition has just been launched to celebrate the former shire’s 100th anniversary.

Last month, around 60 people gathered at Landsborough Museum to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Landsborough Shire, where the new exhibition, a storyboard featuring the late William Landsborough, was also unveiled, along with the launch of a booklet detailing the shire’s history. William Landsborough’s fame lay in becoming the first explorer to successfully traverse the Australian continent, after being sent out to find the missing explorers, Burke and Wills. It was some time later that the Landsborough Township, originally named Mellum Creek, was renamed in his honour. Today, the rich and vibrant history of the area, including the Landsborough Shire, has been well documented and preserved, and is recounted through collections and permanent exhibitions at the Landsborough Museum, the original home of the Landsborough Shire office, opened in 1924. Present at the recent celebrations to mark the anniversary were special guests from one of William Landsborough’s granddaughters, Judy Valentine, to a number of former councillors, including Selwyn Carbery, who served as a councillor on Landsborough Shire Council from 1967 until 1991, by which time it had been renamed Caloundra City Council.

Selwyn, who is now in his 90’s, recalls his time serving on council as a period of rapid growth for the region, including the development of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, a new suburb called Kawana being established, and the opening of the Caloundra Visitor Information Centre. It was also during his years of service that many of the local roads were sealed. The William Landsborough storyboard, which is now on permanent display in the Museum’s foyer, was sponsored by another of one of his granddaughters, Jennifer Stephenson, and her daughter Sara Ducher, along with Rick Baberowski and his partner Karen Tyler, who provided part of the funding for the project prior to his election to Division 1 in the current council. The Landsborough Museum, located at 4 Maleny Street, Landsborough is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, 9.00am 3.00pm. Bridge named after Elizabeth Grigor The bridge over the Stanley River has been renamed to honour the legacy of Peachester identity, Elizabeth Grigor. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the bridge was a fitting tribute and lasting public memorial to an important part of the community’s history. “I took up the cause to name the bridge in honour of Elizabeth after her granddaughter came to me with the idea,” Mr Powell said. “It is easy to forget our history and naming the bridge after Elizabeth reminds us of the important role these pioneering families played in developing our community. “Her husband, William Grigor, was an early settler in Peachester and ran a sawmill where the bridge is now located which quickly became a focal point for the budding Peachester township.

Double lanes reopen on Peachester Range Road

“He was also one of the first elected councillors for the Landsborough Shire in 1912. “Together the Grigors played a vital role in establishing Peachester, building the Crohamhurst State School and many houses in the neighbourhood.” Regional Director Dennis Tennant said Mrs Grigor would never be forgotten thanks to the community-driven initiative to honour her contribution to the region. “Elizabeth officially opened the Stanley River Bridge in 1923 and this naming honours her place as a respected member of the community,” Mr Tennant said. The bridge which crosses Stanley River on Kilcoy-Beerwah Road was renamed in late March.

After nearly 18 months of disruption, the Peachester Range Road has now reopened to two lanes of traffic. Transport and Main Roads Regional Director Dennis Tennant said he was sure motorists would be very pleased to see the road reopened after almost 18 months of it operating as a single lane under temporary traffic signals. Kilcoy-Beerwah Road at Peachester Range was damaged during the flooding events of January 2011 by a significant landslip on the downhill side of the road. Mr Tennant said the landslip took part of the outside laneway with it, and following emergency repairs, the road was opened as a single lane operating under traffic signals. He said the terrain and the topography of the area added to the complexity of designing a long-term solution to the damage. “We have now excavated the uphill side and have moved the road an additional three metres away

from the downhill slope to improve both safety and drainage at this location," he said. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the re-opening of Peachester Range Road is music to the ears of the local community. "I again thank the residents of Peachester for their patience and understanding over ongoing delays. This road certainly wasn't without its challenges and I'm just pleased to see we got there in the end." The works were part of Operation Queenslander and funded under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA). Under these arrangements, the Australian Government provides 75 per cent of the funding, with 25 per cent from the Queensland Government. Councillor reflects on first 30 days as part of new team It may have only been a month since Jenny McKay was returned to office as the elected representative for Division 5, but it’s been long enough for her to note a renewed sense of community and team spirit amongst her fellow councillors.

Cr McKay said she was very impressed by the new team at the helm of Sunshine Coast Council, which represents a diverse mix of individuals, all with a very strong business focus, but balanced by a sense of community. “Because at the end of the day, we’re in the business of people, and it’s great to have a mayor with such a strong business background and team spirit. “It is in the best interest of the ratepayers to have a team that can effectively debate topics, come to an agreement and move forward, and that is exactly what I have seen in this first month. “It’s exciting to be part of a team that realises that although we have very much a local focus, we need to also consider the big picture, and what is happening globally. “The decisions we make can’t just be made for today, but for our future, and we also have a responsibility to present the facts without being alarmist,” she said.

Cr McKay said the first big task ahead of Council was to deliver the budget before the end of the month. “This budget will be very much focussed on the tough times.” “While we’ll be aiming for a minimal rate rise, as one of the coast’s biggest employers, we need to continue to deliver infrastructure projects that provide employment opportunities. Cr Mckay said it was too early to attempt to guess what services might be trimmed back in the budget, but there will have to be some cost cutting measures. “The big four projects that we need to deliver for the Sunshine Coast are the Sunshine Coast airport expansion, the Kawana hospital, the Maroochydore CBD, and Caloundra South.” “The challenge before us is to find the funding to progress these projects to ensure the viability of the future of the coast and its economy.” She said one of her priorities, however, was to ensure that the hinterland was recognised for the value of the drive-by tourism market. “We’re the custodians of a very valuable eco-tourism asset here in the hinterland, and we need to preserve and enhance it, and ensure we get the balance right.”

Over the past couple of weeks there has been plenty of fundraising and fun had by many locals at the Queensland Cancer Councils Biggest Morning Teas, with some impressive funds being raised for the Cancer Council Queensland. On Wednesday, May 23, Embracia held a morning tea with its residents, and during the morning they passed the hat around for donations and ran a hundred club draw to raise money, as well as selling cakes, biscuits and slices in the weeks leading up to the morning tea. They managed to raise a grand total of $607.00. A big thank you to their generous residents and wonderful volunteers and staff for all their support. A great job all round, with a fantastic result for the Cancer Council. At a ladies morning tea at Glenview Gardens Country Resort, around 30 guests were treated to some lovely tasty treats and fluffy cappuccinos, and raised $250.00. Thanks to the following businesses who donated raffle prizes for the day, including Bombay Bliss, Beerwah Woolworths, Beerwah IGA, Loot Caloundra, Aussie World, Beerwah Chemist, Red Threads, Aussie World Flowers and Angus Robertson Bookshop. One of the highlights of the morning were biscuits in the shape of teapots, with one guest travelling from Blackbutt for the event. There’s no doubt a great day was had by all.

Down the road, the Mooloolah Slimmers also hosted a Cuppa for Cancer, raising $1,600.00 during the morning and from donations. A special thanks to the local businesses who donated towards the raffle prizes, which were worth an average of $160.00 each, as well as a number of lucky door prizes drawn throughout the morning. Then at the Beerwah RSL it was pretty in pink for many of those that attended, with over $800.00 being raised, and a fantastic fashion parade which kept the audience entertained. At the Landsborough School of Arts, there was plenty of goodwill and cups of tea going round, and the result was a whopping $2,671.00 raised for the worthy cause. Congratulations to the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Management Committee for a great job, and to all those who supported the event. At the Church on the Rise, there were plenty of yummy treats to tempt the tastebuds, and a successful fundraising effort saw $200.00 raised. Once again, the communities and businesses of Glasshouse have raised their cups in support of another worthy cause, proving there’s always time for a cup of tea and some warm hospitality in the hinterland.

Carebus is coming to the Mooloolah Community Centre

Operated by Suncare Community Services, the Carebus is a free mobile information service that attends a variety of locations across the region. Staff and volunteers of the Carebus are trained to provide relevant information about the availability of beneficial programs and care services within local areas. The Carebus provides people with easy access to a broad range of information including: respite care, health and well-being, medical conditions, home assistance and support, seniors and veterans information, disability services, and federal, state and local government services. The Mooloolah Community Centre will be hosting the Carebus onsite Tuesday, June 26 from 9.00am - 1.00pm. The Mooloolah Community Centre is located at 43 Bray Road Mooloolah. Help build a shed for Max’s horses Following last month’s story of Glass House local Max Chapman and his passion for horses, a call is being put out to anyone interested in contributing to his cause. Local resident Jaylene Musgrave, who was touched by Max’s story, is coordinating a working bee to help construct a shed on the property on Coonorwrin Road where Max keeps his horses. Jaylene said she is looking for donations of materials, and tradespeople who might be able to spare some time to help out with the project. “So many people in the community have come up to Max since the story was published in GCNews and showed interest in helping him help his gorgeous horses,” Jaylene said. Max is well known to many locals, often seen riding the horses around Glass House, and came under the spotlight after Max was awarded the inaugural ‘Peace Out’ award by Jaylene on behalf of Vegan Warriors. An astronomical event!

Last Wednesday, June 6, approximately 900 students from Beerwah State High School witnessed the rarest of predictable astronomical events, the transit of Venus. Predicted by Johannes Kepler in 1631, only six of these events have been witnessed. The importance of these events was realised by Edmond Halley, of Halley’s Comet fame, who presented in 1716 a mathematical way to determine the distance from the Earth to the Sun. This distance had eluded astronomers. In order to gather the data required for this calculation, numerous expeditions were planned for the 1761 and 1769 transits of Venus. One of these was the journey James Cook took to Tahiti to record this data after which proceeded to the Southern oceans, where the rest is history. With the historical importance of the event under their belts, the entire school population enjoyed viewing the Sun through specifically designed solar glasses as well as three telescopes fitted with filters that offered magnified views of the planet passing the Sun.

These photos will be swapped over the internet and students at both schools will use the data to determine the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Physics teachers Mr Budd and Mr Bateman said it was a fantastic day weatherwise but also listening to the positive comments from the students. If you missed this one, start planning for the next one which will occur in 2117.

Landsborough Kindergarten’s 20th annual Cent Auction was held on Saturday, May 26. It was a great success and lots of fun was had on the night. The children, families and staff would like to thank all the local people and businesses for their wonderful support and generous donations. All money raised on the night goes towards the purchase of new equipment and resources as well as general running costs. The fabulous wheelbarrow raffle was drawn on the night, with local resident Mrs Hawtin being the lucky winner!

They begin with an email that has a subject line similar to the following: • Package Delivery Status Failure • Australia Post Delivery Information The body of the email goes on to say something along the lines of

Your package has been returned to the Australia Post office. Reason: Error in delivery address. Information about your package is attached to the letter. Or alternatively:

A courier did not deliver the package to your address. Reason: The delivery address is wrong. Please find the attached document containing detailed information about delivery failure. Read all information carefully and come to the Australia Post office to receive your package. Whatever you do - DO NOT open the attachment! If you have a good quality virus scanner on your machine, it should a) mark the email as junk and b) possibly notify you that the attachment has a virus which it will automatically destroy. If you have opened the attachment, the chances of you having a virus are very high if you don’t already have a good internet security program installed. Best to get one ASAP! SSD – Solid State Hard Drives… What’s All The Fuss About? An SSD or Solid State Hard Drive is different from a normal HDD (Hard Disk Drive) because it has no moving parts. A reminder that July is Friendship Day and to encourage all members to bring along a plant or garden related object for raffle prizes. Members are able to enter two items per section for the competition bench. For those people going on the bus to the Nambour Garden Expo on Friday, July 6, please pay at the June meeting. Results of the competition bench for April, first Pam Innes, second Coral Beutel. After the meeting, members visited the interesting garden of John and Pam Innes. The next meeting will be on Thursday, June 21 at the Peachester Hall, 9.30am. We will be visiting a garden after the meeting. Details at the meeting. Visitors are always welcome. On Wednesday, June 6 our ladies visited the Kate Rose Boutique at Mapleton and enjoyed rummaging through their second hand quality clothes. This was followed by morning tea and a visit to Mapleton Falls. On Wednesday, June 20 from 11.00am we will be holding our 9th birthday celebrations at the Glasshouse Sports Club. The theme will be ‘Feline, feminine fur and fun’ and everyone is encouraged to dress appropriately. Amongst the entertainment will be Katherine Fox, winner of the Sunshine Coast Seniors Superstar competition. This should be a great day, full of fun, prizes, raffles and a bumper trading table. Our club is a non-profit friendship club that supports the Smith Family chiefly through the Foundation’s Learning for Life program for disadvantaged students. The Smith Family is a national, independent children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. On May 29 we held our International Day. The country of study this year is Chile. What a wonderful day! It made all the hard work worthwhile. We thank Lidia Marcus and Alexanda for wonderful displays of musical instruments, clothes, jewellery, tablecloths and quilts etc, all made in Chile. Also the school children for their entries, 95 of which were displayed around the hall. The results are Prep: 1st Rachel, 2nd Erie, Year 1: 1st Dylan, 2nd Kristianne, H.C Bill, Year 2: 1st Edan, 2nd Mia, Year 3: 1st Mitchell, 2nd Ella, H.C Emily and Dylan, Year 4: 1st Bec, 2nd Ellena, Year 5: 1st Shiloh, 2nd Tahli, Year 6/7:1st Erin 2nd, Jayden, H.C Nicholas and Zoe. Thank you to Helen, Jan and Val who had the difficult task of judging the entries. Special thanks to Cath, Gordon, Marg, Joan, Bev, Margaret, Lidia and Pam, guest speakers Lidia, Marcus and Alexanda who entertained us with interesting information, while the National song was played on numerous instruments. Alexanda’s three year old son accompanied him on a huge drum as he demonstrated how to play the numerous instruments. Guests enjoyed a delicious hot lunch with the Peachester members making Empanadas Fritas, Cazuela de ave Con Chochoca, Pastel de Papas, and Cazuela de Cordeo, and the Beerwah ladies serving dessert of Leche Asada, red wine delight and Kuchen de quesillo. A big welcome to the ladies and their well behaved children from the play group. Lucky door winner was Joy from Cooroy. The raffle of Chile Wine, a large brom and a pretty soap set was won by Pam of Peachester, Bob of Cooroy and Robyn of Nambour. Let’s share the roads

As one of a growing number of cycling enthusiasts who love to ride the Hinterland roads, we occasionally encounter motorists who honk their horns and shout at us. They seem to think that cyclists do not have the same rights and responsibilities as other road users. But under Queensland Road Rules bicycles are considered vehicles. Motorists can make it easier and safer for cyclists if they follow some of these rules: 1. Make room. Allow at least one metre clearance to cyclists. When overtaking, give cyclists lots of room in case they need to swerve to avoid other hazards. Just as you would not pass a slow truck uphill where there are double lines, why try to pass a cyclist when it is unsafe? 2. Watch for cyclists at intersections and roundabouts; give way to cyclists when turning left and exiting or entering properties. 3. Check behind you for cyclists before opening your car door, turning or reversing. 4. Be patient. Wait until it is safe before overtaking a cyclist. Look left, look right, look for a bike! Beerwah NHWQ June Good Neighbour Award At the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ held on June 4, the ‘Good Neighbour Award’ was presented to Glenda McSwain, who had been nominated by Pam and John Innes. Their citation read: ‘Glenda is very involved with HAAC Coochin Hills Centre; has recently been elected as Chairperson of the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy Council; is a member of The Singing Belles choir and involves them in concerts that she organises for Embracia and Coochin Hills. Glenda co-organises the Annual Beerwah High School Chaplaincy Golf Tournament with Warwick Moody. Keith Inglis organised Rotary concerts and after his death she organised a Keith Inglis Memorial Concert the following year. There have been a lot of community based events on in the Glass House electorate lately which has certainly kept me busy! It is show season and the Glass House electorate overlaps with four different shows across the region including Maleny, Caboolture, Nambour and Woodford. I have had information stalls set up at each show so far and must say how great it has been to catch up with locals. The show tradition is certainly alive and well in Glass House with record numbers attending the Show Balls and the shows themselves. Glasshouse Mountains even had its own show, the Glasshouse Sustainability Expo in amongst the mix and was also a great hit with those who attended. Bankfoot House recently held its 2012 Open Day with a massive 900 people joining in the celebrations. Along with Governor Penelope Wensley and other lifelong community members I joined in celebrating this great day and even got to watch the Governor ride in a 109-year-old horseless carriage! The celebrations continued last weekend with the official naming of Elizabeth Grigor Bridge in Peachester. These locals are so very proud of their heritage and it was a touching experience to see the joy on their faces as we unveiled the new bridge name.

I recently met with the Glass House Chamber of Commerce to discuss a range of issues, including a lack of signage in the Beerwah Town Centre. I’m happy to report I’ve arranged for a representative from the Department of Transport and Main Roads to meet with us this month Ursula Starkovsky, Kel McNamara, Mark McArdle and to discuss this issue and Patty Shaw meeting to discuss signage concerns possible solutions.

Strengthening local groups

I’m pleased to see the State Government has recently approved funding for a number of community group projects. The Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club received significant funding to repair a damaged track and support BMX at Mooloolah. St Vincent de Paul at Landsborough will receive funding to purchase a solar system, Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue at Landsborough will be able to purchase a rescue vessel and Beerwah Golf Club has also received funding. Well done everyone.

Free 28-day challenge to help mums lower stress with Landsborough Self Help for Mums guru Essential Kids, Australia’s most informative site for parents with children, and the Self Help for Mums organisation have joined forces to launch a free 28-day challenge to inspire Australian mums to stop yelling at their children. Landsborough’s Jackie Hall, author of ‘The Happy Mum Handbook’, founder of Self Help for Mums and GCNews columnist, created the idea from her own desire to learn a new habit of not yelling at her children. The challenge is based on the idea that it takes 21 days to break an old habit and an extra seven days to reinforce the new one – that is, being a calmer parent. Participants sign up for the challenge and receive 28 daily emails from Self Help for Mums, an organisation that specialises in teaching mums how to parent stress-free. Each email progressively teaches parents how to understand the thinking behind their anger and frustrations, and learn how to adopt a different mindset when approaching the challenges of raising children. Mums participating in the challenge can use a dedicated section on the Essential Kids forum to discuss their progress, recognise their wins, admit when they’ve dropped the ball, share their learning and generally get support from a community of women all working towards the same goal – to be scream-free.

Jackie said loads of information can be found on how to raise kids and manage behaviour, but very little information is available on how mums can manage their own mental and emotional states. “This challenge is about teaching mums how to adopt a different mindset when dealing with the ups and downs of being a parent, whilst getting non-judgemental support from other mums who are also trying to change,” Jackie said. Sharing the challenge with her Facebook fans initially, Jackie found that many mums reported to notice a remarkable difference in how they felt, their child’s behaviour and, in many cases, their partner’s behaviour. Essential Kids editor Amber Robinson said: “as a mum, I know that kids can sometimes be a handful and resorting to screaming can be easy, which is why Essential Kids is so excited about launching this challenge with Self Help for Mums. Out and About Landsborough Shireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centenary Around 60 guests helped celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Landsborough Shire at the Landsborough Museum, the original home of the Landsborough chambers, with the unveiling of a new exhibition and the launch of a new booklet detailing the history of the shire. Whats Happening at Mooloolah Public Hall

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, 4.00pm in the Hall. The Hall has been in our community for over 100 years (always run by volunteers) so please think about becoming a member and helping maintain this local venue. We desperately need new members. The Hall is used throughout the week by various groups - yoga, creative dance, craft group, slimmers, martial arts, churches and tia chi commencing soon. Contacts for these groups are available on the information boards at the hall. With so few members, fundraising is difficult but we have succeeded to some degree with help from the local craft group and our input at the monthly markets. Whether the markets will continue is uncertain, as it is a lot of work for so few members. The winner of the beautiful handmade quilt (donated by the local craft group) was C. Ryan of Mooloolah. Well done and thanks to all who helped our fundraising by buying tickets. Come along to a meeting and become involved in Your Own Public Hall.

Call me old-fashioned, but I love our beautiful Queen Elizabeth. I have enjoyed seeing the wonderful images of the celebrations marking her Diamond Jubilee. In what must feel like a lifetime ago for her, through the brilliant experience of technology, we have been able to watch and hear her as a 21-year-old young woman, making her speech to the people of the Commonwealth from Cape Town. She famously said “I declare before you that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be dedicated to your service….God help me to make good my vow, and God bless all of you who are willing to share in it.” Who can doubt that, with God’s help, she has made good her vow! Her Majesty has lived 60 years of her life (and counting!) devoted to the service of others. What an extraordinary achievement! Serving others is one of the most beautiful expressions of love that I can think of. In the book of Luke, Jesus says a true leader is one who humbly serves. The Bible tells us that Jesus came to serve Because of His greatness, not in spite of it (John 13:15) and He was the perfect example of a servant when He lived on the earth. The 'volunteer spirit' or as the Bible calls it a ‘servant’s heart’, is about doing whatever you need to do to help

Real Estate & Financial Guide Borrowers get back to basics in May Variable interest rate home loans were the product of choice for almost four of every five new borrowers in May, a month when the Reserve Bank sweetened the appeal with a 50 basis point cash rate cut. Borrowers’ preference for variable rate loans rose marginally, by one percentage point to 79 per cent of all new home loans last month, according to national loan approval data from Australia’s largest independently-operated mortgage broker, Mortgage Choice. The biggest increase in variable rate loan demand

was recorded in SA (up 12 per cent, to 85 per cent), followed by NSW (up four per cent, to 77 per cent), WA (up one per cent, to 79 per cent) and QLD (up one per cent, to 74 per cent). Local Mortgage Choice franchise owner, Robert Harney said The Reserve Bank’s decision last month to cut the cash rate by 50 basis points, combined with speculation around further rate cuts, is likely to have fuelled borrowers’ appetites for variable rate home loans. “Price-sensitive borrowers more than likely found comfort in lenders’ decision to pass on majority of

the rate cut savings to variable rate borrowers.” “Out of all the variable rate home loan types, basic variable rates, which tend to be more affordable but less flexible with fewer features, were the only loan product to gain in popularity, with demand rising to 17 per cent in May from 14 per cent in April.” He said the increased interest in basic variable rate loans, now at a nine-month high, could signal a return to the market by first homebuyers, as these loans tend to be more popular with lower income and less experienced borrowers.

Contributed by Ken Fullerton Jnr The Chris Carter Memorial game between BG’s and NYU will be played at Yandina on June 23, second division 5.00pm, followed by first division at 7.00pm. Chris Kocho ‘Choc’ Carter was born September 12, 1970. He grew up in Yandina and attended school there. Chris loved his sport and started playing soccer with NYU when he was eight. He worked his way up through the years to become a 1st Div player as well as a Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay representative. Chris came to play for BG’s in his early 20’s and was a great asset to the club. We enjoyed playing many games together and had a few fantastic end of season trips to Double Island Point. Chris was tragically killed in an accident on June 14, 1997. He was a great player and a good mate to everyone at BG’s. RIP our mate Choc. We will never forget you.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Jenny Kelly We had great day weather wise on Thursday for the opening round of the Women's Championships. This event will be played as a Stroke competition over four days. We hold individual competitions on a daily basis in conjunction with the Championships and Thursday's was sponsored by Cath Cherry and Oriel Lyon. The winner of Division 1 was Hollie Sinclair with a 73 Nett, closely followed by Noelene Annakin with 74 Nett. Jan Corfield took out Division 2 with 74 Nett, with Barb McIntosh runner up on 75 Nett. Number 2 proved a bit tricky in the wind so no one got the NTP on that hole. Sue Williamson got closest on 5, Andrea Campbell took out 16, and Carol Fraser got the 18th. Sue Williamson scored a birdie on 17 to win the random birdie hole this week. The ball run down went to 80 Nett. I will bring you the results of the Championships next week, if the weather is kind to us and we get to play. Till then, stay safe and good golfing. JUNE 13 2012 |

With the cooler weather, we all like to get stuck into the larger landscaping jobs which we tend to put off through summer. Building new garden beds, renewing garden edging, creating a deck, fencing and building kids play structures are just some of these. And we all love the look and feel of timber. Copper chrome arsenate (CCA) is a timber treatment used to protect timbers – especially pine – from rot and termites. Australia, New Zealand and the USA are the three largest users of CCA treated timber in the world. A couple of years ago legislation kicked-in banning the sale of CCA treated timbers for use in structures which are likely to come into contact with people, particularly children. This includes garden furniture, picnic tables, exterior seating, play equipment, patio and domestic decking timbers and hand railings. But CCA treated timbers can still be used for garden edging, deck framing, fencing, screens, structural timbers, cladding, fascias, battening, retaining wall timbers, pergola timbers and posts. The authorities found that there was insufficient information for them to be satisfied that CCA treated timber was safe when used in situations where the community are likely to come into frequent and intimate contact. They also note that there is a risk – although not large – of the arsenic leaching into garden soil from CCA treated edging. Plants growing near the edging may take the arsenic up through their roots. While CCA treated timbers may be safe to generally use around the backyard, it is important that we try to protect the safety of ourselves and our families as much as possible. To reduce your risks, you should: • Cover any existing skin wounds before working with CCA timber • Wear a quality dust mask when cutting CCA timber • Keep food and drinks away from areas where you are cutting CCA timber • Wash your hands and face after working with CCA timber • Never burn CCA timber in a fireplace or barbecue • Don’t use the saw dust or wood shavings as mulch or in compost • Don’t use CCA timber where small children or animals might chew on the wood • Consider alternative timbers or treatments where possible One alternative is to use cypress pine. It is naturally termite, borer and rot resistant without having to use chemicals. Cypress pine is cheaper than using hardwood, and can last just as long in landscaping as treated timbers. The biggest thing is that you end up with a product which is safe for children, but can last longer than other types of timber.
