The Show must go on ... line Hi everyone It seems kind of strange that it could be May and we haven’t already done 27 stories about the Maleny Show.

Yes, I do know that some readers might feel we get a bit carried away, but in our office it is kind of like the lead up to Christmas … with some many great parts to it, the exhibitors, the competitors, the rides, the poultry, the entertainment, the ring events, and did I say the food?

And while we all know the show can’t happen this year - as we need to keep everyone safe in our community - we

have been working with the Maleny Show Society to work out how to celebrate all the great things about the show that we love.

So in the next few weeks we are going to be putting the call out for you to share photos of what you could be entering, if there was a show.

So if you have been spending a lot of time in the kitchen in the past few weeks we would love to see your cakes and bread making efforts, or if you have become a Lego master, or have you been getting busy with your camera …

Local News Virtual Cattle Show

By Sonia Clark Normally at this time of year, Maleny High student Emily Shepherdson would be preparing to show cattle at the Maleny Show at the end of this month, however, with this years’ restrictions on large outdoor events, Emily decided to set up her own online Virtual Cattle Show instead.

Having enjoyed working with cattle for the last five years through the Maleny High Agricultural program, judging at the Maleny Show for the previous four years, as well as working with around 90 head of cattle on her family properties, Emily had also planned to show her own cattle for the very first time this year’s show.

Instead of being daunted by the current restrictions, and inspired by other ‘virtual shows’ online, the enterprising year 11 student established the Facebook group Cattle Kids Australia.

“I got the idea for an online-cattle show originally from overseas sites, and decided to set one up here as I hadn’t seen much for Australian cattle,” said Emily.

“I put the idea out for interest, sharing it on cattle pages and through my networks, and got great positive feedback and interest from sponsors.”

Emily set up the Facebook page at the end of last month as a bit of fun, and the online competition is open to all people in Australia to show any steer or stud classes with all breeds welcomed.

To enter, people will need to submit a side on photo and a video of the animal walking for Emily to judge their movement, as well as details of weight (steer classes), breed details, registrations and weight (stud classes).

For fairness reasons, Emily will not be entering any of her own cattle, and will be using her knowledge from being placed in cattle judging in previous years to assess the winners.

Entries close midnight May 17, with some great prizes from local sponsors and Maleny State High.

Thumbs up for almost $500,000 dollars in funding After a disappointing year for the Maleny Show Society committee which saw them cancel the show for only the second time since World War 2, they were pleased with the Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace’s announcement that they would be receiving a grant of $486,111 last week.

The grant will go toward the construction of new facilities which will help renew and reinvigorate the show grounds.

Mr Wallace said that the grant, delivered under the Regional Agricultural Show Development Grants program, would help make the next Maleny Show bigger and better than ever.

“Every year this event is absolutely the biggest show in town and it has been very disappointing for all of us in Maleny to miss out in 2020,” Mr Wallace said.

“However, thanks to this grant I’m pleased to say that next year’s Maleny Show will be our best yet!”

“The grant will be used by the Maleny Show Society to build a new workshop and shed, to extend their offices to provide more capacity for putting together a terrific show, and to construct new accessible amenities to make it easier for people with disabilities to come along and take part in the fun.

“That is going to benefit not only our show, but our whole community in

providing work for local builders in the short term and drawing more visitors to our community in the years to come.”

Maleny Show Society President and Cr for Division 5 Winston Johnston said that the Society is privileged to receive this grant.

“This grant will benefit not only the Show Society but TS Centaur, the cricket club, the soccer club and many more,” Mr Johnston said.

“At the present moment we are starved for these kinds of facilities and our grounds staff desperately need more area for working and storage.

“I’d also like to thank my team, because the Maleny Show Committee is a team and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved.

“Maleny Show is undoubtedly one of the best country shows in Queensland and this grant means that the Show can move on the next stage and grow even bigger.”

Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud said the Australian Government wants to see our agricultural shows continue to thrive, so that they can be enjoyed by Australians for generations to come.

By Sonia Clark With media coverage earlier this week suggesting almost 5.5 million downloads of the COVIDSafe app, while the pick up rate is good, it would appear that Australians are still weighing up their concerns, and in some cases caution towards the early adoption of the new government contact tracing tool.

While many have applauded Australia’s success to date in addressing the COVID-19 crisis, this notable achievement in ‘flattening the curve’, and the comparatively low death rates of the virus that has seen devastating consequences across the globe, some have also suggested it may be contributing to the slower uptake of the COVIDSafe app.

Concerns about ironing out some of the technology flaws with issues around older phones, battery usage and iPhone specific issues have also supplemented community conversation around privacy, trust and ongoing access to information.

tracing as a fast and effective modern approach to help manage the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns continue to be raised around implementing stronger safeguards to ensure civil and data protection.

Last week the Government released an exposure draft of legislation to support the COVIDSafe app and ensure users’ privacy is protected. Dubbed the COVIDSafe Bill, The Privacy Amendment (Public Health Contact Information) Bill 2020 is set to be debated this week in Parliament and will, amongst other measures, provide much stronger privacy protection for collected data with jail terms and fines for privacy breaches.

Many people would feel assured that privacy safeguards for the contact tracing app have been significantly strengthened, meaning laws against misuse of citizens' data will cover all federal, state and territory agencies, police, courts and anticorruption bodies, and the COVIDSafe app cannot be used to enforce quarantine or isolation restrictions, or other laws.

South Australia issued a joint statement that supported the introduction of effective digital contact tracing as long as it had robust privacy and transparency legislation underpinning it.

While the councils jointly acknowledged a number of the community’s privacy and data security concerns have been addressed, they identified a number of issues that should be considered before the bill is passed. These included recommendations that more needs to be done to ensure that the app does not compromise data protection and thereby increase the risk of illegal and inappropriate use of data or surveillance of Australians; and concerns as well as highlighting that the Government has opted for centralized data storage in a new National COVIDSafe Data Store, rather than adopting the widely supported and more privacyfriendly decentralised option, potentially allowing the likelihood of cyber-attacks and accidental and illegal data breaches.

A host of government officials, including the Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Health Minister Greg Hunt and Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy, as well as numerous respected peak industry body representatives including The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and other health professionals, strongly recommended the voluntary uptake of the new app to their Android or Apple (iOS) smartphone as a viable way of protecting family, friends and loved ones, while also saving the lives of others.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg MP has also suggested that the economic benefits from lifting the restrictions will only be realised if Australians continue to follow the health advice and download the COVIDSafe app.

Overpass Reference Group to be established Last Friday, the Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle advised GC&M News that in June, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) were planning to establish a reference group to assist and be the community contact for the Landsborough overpass.

Following a teleconference with the new Regional Director of TMR late last week, Mr McArdle was keen to make local residents aware that expressions of interest from locals would be sought for the reference group.

Mr McArdle said Landsborough residents have significant concerns about the overpass and to reflect these concerns there must be a separate group to look at the issues.

“This is an important issue for Landsborough, and it confirms the Government’s intent to deliver an overpass,” he said.

Mr McArdle has advised the Landsborough Overpass Reference Committee (LORC) of the need for them to apply to be part of the reference group being established by TMR. “Tim Fitzpatrick from LORC and his team have worked hard for a long time to find a solution that is going to be, as best as possible, a win-win for all concerned.

“Importantly, a local reference group will consult with the local community on an ongoing basis.

“The Landsborough overpass has been an issue for years, with the community strongly against the current landing site of the overpass on the western side of the rail line which will have

“Importantly the community must have a say in this process. The community must make their voices heard and obtain the best outcome.

“The Department also confirmed that funding for construction is not yet available. Given our current financial position it may be some time away but don’t bank on that. The fact the group is being established is proof it will happen,” Mr McArdle concluded.

COVID-19 virtual health summit

By Sonia Clark Plus Fitness 24/7 Beerwah may have been forced to temporarily close their doors, but they are still keen to continue their commitment to the health and well-being of their community members, especially during this challenging time of social restrictions and changed circumstances.

With this in mind, they have thrown their support behind an online charity event to raise awareness for mental health.

Group operations manager Josie Robertson (pictured) said the online Zoom event will run over two days, Sunday May 17 and Monday May 18, and will offer a variety of different live online classes featuring fitness industry professionals conducting great sessions on mindset, movement, nutrition and recovery.

“At such a critical time, we are aligning with Mental Health Australia Ltd. to raise awareness and funds during this pandemic,” shared Josie.

Josie said that

people can do as many of the classes over the two days as they like and any donation no matter how big or small will be greatly appreciated.

The event kicks off at 10am on Sunday May 17, with a mental health talk with Dr Roy Sugarman, followed by an ‘interactive play’ class at 11am. There will be a cooking and nutrition class from ‘The Chief Life’ at mid-day, followed by ‘pilates with a twist’ at 1pm.

On Monday afternoon, there will be a ‘body weight HIIT’ class at 4pm (just grab a chair and a tennis ball or foam roller) followed by ‘booty blast’ at 5pm and ‘core hot sensation’ at 6pm.

The charity awareness event will conclude with a 7pm ‘kettlebell total body workout’ (if you don’t have a kettlebell you can use a dumbbell).

New coffee house helping local business During a tough time for many, local hospital foundation Wishlist is ‘spreading love’ to our local healthcare workers while supporting the local business community.

The Nambour Hospital kiosk, which has been operated by the Nambour Hospital Auxiliary for 34 years, was recently gifted to Wishlist and reopened as Wishlist Coffee House.

Wishlist have chosen to give local restaurants and cafes, many of whom are past supporters of Wishlist’s work, an opportunity to provide delights to Nambour Hospital staff.

Different coast restaurants or caterers each day provide dishes to the coffee house as a daily special to hospital staff.

Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said top local restaurants on board to date included The Spirit House, and the Mercure Sunshine Coast Lake Kawana “It might not be the most profitable move to make as a charity-run cafe, but for the next three months we are focusing on helping local hospitality businesses,” said Ms Rowe.

“This is just one way we are helping to support the local business sector that has supported us for so very long, and this

Ms Rowe welcomes other local business to take part in the enterprise if they can.

“We’re asking for their best price on a set meal or two, on a day each week that suits them. We buy the agreed amount of meals, promote these meals to staff - telling them which business is featuring, then we sell this on to the Nambour Hospital team,” she said.

“If the business can deliver to the hospital it’s a bonus for us, but it’s not essential."

All the funds raised will go to supporting the work of Wishlist whose current focus during COVID-19 is distributing Wishlist Care Packs to vulnerable patients upon discharge from local hospitals.

Heather Gall

By Sonia Clark Heather Gall is an accomplished landscape painter, who after a recent hiatus of a few years, has returned to her love of capturing the natural world with renewed vitality. Working from her light-filled Bald Knob studio, Heather said she is fortunate to overlook the Glass House Mountains, which is inspiring much of her current work. Holding her first exhibition at the age of 21, Heather continued her creative journey throughout her life into all types of themes, mediums and topics, including children’s book illustrating, curating, gallery management (Heather owned and operated Tree Frog Gallery for a number of years) and art teaching. Heather said she has always loved depicting natural landscapes, and even as a child on her family sheep and cattle property in Dirranbandi, South-West Queensland, she recalled that she held a creative interest from the time that she could first hold a pen.

“I’ve always loved trying to capture the momentary essence of landscapes, and I am inherently drawn to the ‘dis-ordered order’ of the natural world,” said Heather.

When working on a landscape, Heather said that with so much detail contained in the natural world, it can be very easy to get distracted and to overwork a piece, and so her challenge is to decide which detail to paint and what to leave out. She also credits the importance of the right

composition to produce a solid piece of good work she can be proud of.

A self-professed ‘all or nothing girl’, Heather said that once she is fully immersed in creating a piece, she won’t stop until she has completed it, and will happily work for hours uninterrupted in her studio, and can often complete a work between a few days to a week. She is actually loving the current social restrictions, as she feels she has the permission to follow her passion without distraction, and is currently painting for around six hours a day which she absolutely loves! For the last four years, family and work commitments had somewhat subdued Heather’s creative instinct and she is delighting in her recent return to her brushes.

“When you have been creative all your life, if you are unable to create you can feel like part of your personality and how you express it, is missing. Now that I’ve returned to painting again, I feel that I can look and see the natural world around me with fresh eyes,” shared Heather.

“Everywhere I go my powers of observation have been enhanced and I once again see the shapes of leaves, the density of light

and shadow, the hues of natural lighting all around me.”

With an inherent appreciation of the beauty and subtlety of light and reflections, painting rainforests, waterways and landscapes, Heather’s current creative challenge is to draw inspiration from the majestic vista of the Glass House Mountains which had previously daunted her artistically. Business News Dining out a possibility for some?

Government restrictions on public dining are being eased from Friday May 15 which means our local restaurants, pubs, RSL’s, clubs and cafés will be permitted to have a maximum of ten dine in patrons at a time (bars and gaming will remain closed).This is part of a gradual reopening strategy over the coming months.

For some local venues, particularly cafes, this news should see a low-key approach to slowly getting back on track, but for others, the current easing of restrictions aren’t sufficient to have an impact.

Checking in with Beerwah Hotel and Landsborough Pub, both venues have decided to continuing focusing on their takeaway menu options, with the team at Beerwah Hotel advising customers that “unfortunately with a limit of only ten people at any one time in their Bistro, it would not be viable to open, and so on premise dining will remain closed until further notice.”

Jo Logan from Landsborough Pub said they will be focussed on offering their takeaway menu for the immediate future, but will wait and see if there are any changes.

“At this stage we are still planning to wait until July when we can viably increase our dine in capacity,” said Jo. Hotel Maleny has indicated that the business will be looking to accept bookings for ten dine in patrons at a time from this Saturday May 16.

Their plans are still being finalised in relation to opening hours going forward, but for those missing the ‘dine in’ experience, bookings are being taken now for 45-minute sittings.

The next level ‘Stage 2’ of easing of dining restrictions is currently proposed for June 12 and will see an increase to diners of a maximum of 20 diners. The significant change will be for ‘Stage 3’ which is currently proposed for July 10, and will see the limit of maximum people increase to 100 at any one time for dining, as well as the planned reopening of bars and gaming.

By Sonia Clark While many of us have enjoyed aspects of being able to reset and re-evaluate our daily lives after weeks of tough lock down measures, there will be many who will welcome the upcoming reopening of some beauty and nail services as a long overdue chance to glow up, groom and glamourize again. Last Friday, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk indicated that COVID-19 restrictions for Queensland beauty therapists and nail salons will be lifted from midnight Friday May 15 as ‘Stage 1’ of an easing of restrictions. For those of us bearing the burden of weeks of hirsute growth, dull skin and sad looking nails and eyelashes, this is indeed good news!

Shannon Greenwood from Hinterland Body and Soul said that while some of the information around easing of restrictions had initially been a little confusing, between differences applicable to each State, she and business partner Jen were looking forward to being able to offer just about all of their previous treatments, such as therapeutic massage, facials, waxing and peels, as well as a nail technician service.

“After only being able to offer massage therapy for a few days last week, we are now very excited to be able to fully open again from this Saturday morning,” said Shannon.

“Initially we will open from 9am until 3pm, until we are busy once again.”

Like most beauty salons, they will also be following a strict COVID-19 safety plan going forward, with thorough cleaning and sanitising before and after each client to ensure community safety and hygiene.

Brighten up an older person’s day

By Sonia Clark RangeCare is keen to bring a smile to their clients face and let them know someone is thinking of them and wishing them well through their new pen pal project.

The project is aimed at helping their older clients develop new connections with others in the community.

As more elderly people are spending time isolated at home, this new initiative is a great way for children and adults to socially support others in the community by exchanging a letter, colourful drawing or artwork.

Volunteer coordinator Cara Doherty said that many of their elderly clients are not taking part in their usual activities that help them to maintain social and community connections.

“Our clients are reporting that they are feeling lonely and want more social interaction,” explained Cara.

“Meanwhile, we were also aware that many community members, particularly children, were spending more time at home and were looking for ways to be able to do something meaningful to help their community.”

Through the project, there is an open invitation to anyone in the community who would like to write a letter (or send a drawing or some artwork) to their clients and brighten their day.

Cara said that community members keen to be involved just needed to write a letter introducing themselves or provide a drawing or artwork, and send it into RangeCare, to be forwarded on to clients taking part in the project.

“We encourage mutual and continuing exchanges as people get to know each other and share stories and interests.”

While generally not a preferred mode of communication these days, letter writing is also something that many of our older clients are familiar with and enjoy.

There has been an increase in bicycle riding on the Sunshine Coast due to the vast amount of the community choosing this as a form of exercise during COVID-19 restrictions.

Therefore Sunshine Coast police would like to remind everyone that it is a condition of riding your bicycle that you must wear an Australian Standard approved bicycle helmet. You must securely fit and fasten it before use.

A bicycle helmet cannot prevent the seriousness of injury to your head if it is mounted on the handle bars! A bicycle helmet is designed to help protect your head, not your handle bars.

You may only carry passengers on your bicycle, if the bicycle is designed to carry passengers.

If you have a doctor’s certificate, you must carry it with you when you ride without a helmet.

You also do not need to wear a helmet if you are a member of a religious group and are wearing a headdress customarily worn by your group that makes it impractical to wear a helmet.

When you are riding a bicycle, you must have one leg on each side of the seat, be facing forwards and have one hand on the handle bars always.

A bicycle rider who fails to wear a helmet may receive a fine of $133.

Click and collect your Library Books?

You’ve heard of online click and collect shopping, well now Sunshine Coast Libraries card holders can request their own click and collect book service!

A wide selection of items suitable for adults, teens and children can now be selected for pickup so while the libraries may be closed, library members can still get their reading fix.

The click and collect service is available for all library members with up to ten titles available for collection per card.

Simply complete an online form with your preferences of genre or indication of recently enjoyed authors or titles, and library staff will then hand pick a selection to be ready and waiting for collection at your local library.

Each member of the family can have a click and collect form completed with additional options including a preference for DVD or audiobook inclusion, large type text, graphic novels or beginner reader titles.

There is a wide range of genres to pick your favourites from and if you are feeling adventurous you can even get the Library staff to pop in a few ‘surprise’ picks.

Staff will notify you by email or phone when you are able to pick up your items, and if you currently have reservations available, they can also be included in your loans.

Croquet in days gone by

Contributed by Ken Barker Croquet has an interesting characteristic as a sport because it is one of the few where men and women play on equal terms. In its heyday in the United Kingdom, from the mid 1800’s to the beginning of the 20th century, it was the sport of choice in the privileged classes on both sides of the Atlantic.

As such, it generated many imaginative ideas about what constituted cheating as part of the normal argy-bargy that occurs when men play women; remembering that in those Victorian days, a woman’s place was in the home and her demeanour was required to be modest.

Stories abounded of using hooped skirts to move balls out of position on the lawn, questioning the lightness of touch as an illegal stroke – usually after a talented lady beat a dandified gent.

Rules were tightened to become more clearly defined by the beginning of the 19th century creating a situation where an undisputed world champion could be declared.

Surprisingly, it came as no surprise at the time that a woman, Lily Gower, rose through the ranks, became world champion, and dominated the sport for several years. That much wasn’t made of

Another example is death. Sounds kind of morbid, but everyone knows that one day they are going to die. There is literally nothing we can do to change those two facts – gravity and dying.

Some similar scenarios: If we spend more money than we earn, eventually we will end up with financial hardship.

to these strict rules; some people have quietly done their best to follow the rules and accepted the restrictions, and some have sought to find ‘loop holes’ so they can do what they want to do, rather than be restricted.

We, as humans, have a tendency to want to be independent, to do things our way. But we are learning in this current worldwide situation that we aren’t as in control as we like to think.

In the Bible, Proverbs 3:5-6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

You Said It Protection for landlords and tenants

In the last sitting of Parliament we debated and passed emergency legislation to ensure financial and regulatory assistance for many Queenslanders during this COVID crisis. I focused my contribution on trying to find a balance between tenants who have lost their livelihoods and their ability to pay rent and the landlords who often rely on that rent for their own livelihood.

Some key changes made are as follows: • Until the end of the defined period (whichever is earlier - 29 September 2020 or the end of the COVID emergency period), a landlord or agent cannot evict a tenant for failure to pay agreed rent IF the failure related to the tenant suffering financial hardship because of COVID-19.

• A landlord can still issue a notice to leave if they are selling the property, or if they or their immediate family need to occupy the property, but in both cases there needs to be two months’ notice given.

If the tenant is suffering excessive hardship because of COVID-19 the landlord must offer the tenant an extension of the lease to 30 September 2020 or an earlier date requested by the tenant.

Showground projects

In October 2019 Maleny Show Society lodged a Federal Government Show Grounds Improvement Grant application.

The application was for works on two projects.

The first project was to double the size of the show secretary’s office, demolish the toilet block behind, and to construct a new shower/amenities block.

The second project was to construct a 40m by 12m workshop/storage building to replace the existing building near TS Centaur facility, to demolish the old structure and construct associated road works.

Last week the Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace, announced that Maleny Show Society would receive a grant of $486,111 to help fund these works.

These much needed show ground improvements will hopefully be completed before the 2021 Maleny Show and will be greatly appreciated by the show committee, show patrons, Maleny Cricket Club, Maleny Soccer Club and TS Centaur Cadets.

The show committee wishes to thank the Federal Government, Andrew Wallace, MHR, and Greg Williams, the grants officer of Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club, who assisted in lodging a high quality grant application.

I recently commenced this ten week interactive online program with a group of friends called The Lift Project Sunshine Coast, which Council has partnered with Lift Lifestyle Medicine to offer at no cost to all Sunshine Coast residents.

Just over four years ago our wonderful community banded together to help raise funds (a day to remember) for my nephew Chayse, after the devastating death of my sister, Gemma Rane and her unborn son Deegan.

This is a letter of appreciation, to all the small businesses and individuals that made this truly a memorable day. I thank you.

In total, close to $16,000 was raised thanks to our community spirit. Half of funds raised paid for the funeral and cremation of Gemma and Deegan, the other half is sitting in a trust account for Chayse untouched.

I am going out of my comfort zone and speaking up now because we are all struggling in some way.

Local Eats Fill your belly with tasty takeaway options Feeling hungry and don’t feel like cooking?

Well, the good news is that the new Beerwah Hotel takeaway menu has just launched with some belly filling goodness, packed with a mouth-watering selection of customer favourites, winter warmers and well-priced family meal deals including family parmy, fish and pizza deals from $44.

Hinterland Families Virtual Open Day simplified Glasshouse Christian College’s (GCC) Open Day is going ahead – almost as planned.

The GCC annual Open Day is the biggest event on its calendar with approximately 2,000 people participating.

So, when the COVID-19 crisis hit, the last thing the school wanted was to cancel Open Day. Instead of giving up, GCC decided to hold the whole event online on Saturday May 16 from 10am and 2pm.

GCC’s Principal Mike Curtis said, “We will miss the food trucks and train rides but the components that make a great Open Day will still be an important part of our virtual event.”

Virtual Open Day will include student-led tours, science demonstrations, dance,

music and drama performances, behind the scenes looks at prep, a tour of the working farm, cooking demonstrations, and even a bloopers reel!

Virtual visitors will also be able to chat with the Principal and Heads of School online during the event and ask any questions that are prompted by what they are seeing.

Although the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery building may be closed, the gallery is still ‘virtually’ open for business, with a broad variety of creative art programs and activities suitable for both children and adults online.

Gallery director Jo Duke said to help keep the community connected while at home, the gallery will continue to deliver a range of online programs to educate, inspire and entertain.

“Art creates spaces where ideas can flourish and flow; where we can share thoughts and feelings; connecting us and starting conversations,” said Jo. “Although the Caloundra Regional Gallery as a building is closed, as a cultural space and a cultural conduit, we are open.”

Some of the available activities include a number of ‘Kid’s Art Attack at Home’ tutorials, which provide step by step instruction on how to create some seriously cool art and crafts projects such as spud painting, exploding volcanoes and the eternal childhood favourite – how to make your own easy goop!

There are also a number of creative activity sheets for various projects such as making snowflakes, bubble prints and even newspaper people.

Health & Wellbeing Free breast cancer screening resumes on Sunshine Coast Following the temporary suspension of routine breast screening by BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast Service (BSQSC) last month, services will now resume in May. Clinical Director of BSQSC Dr Alison Roper said BreastScreen Queensland was an important early detection service for women, which reduced illness and death from breast cancer.

“The wellbeing of women and our staff is always our top priority,” she said.

“BreastScreen Queensland is implementing a range of strategies to minimise and address risk from COVID-19 for women who attend for breast screening and also our staff.

“Following infection control and public health advice, social distancing will be maintained in waiting areas, and additional cleaning of facilities and equipment has been implemented.”

Women who had an appointment cancelled will be contacted to make a new appointment.

“We understand that some women may have concerns about attending screening at this time. If this is you, please talk to your own doctor about whether breast screening at this time is right for you,

based on your individual circumstances,” said Dr Roper.

BreastScreen Queensland has clinics locally in Nambour, Maroochydore, Caloundra and Caboolture. The mobile breast screening service will return to Maleny in June.

“While our service was suspended, some of our staff were redeployed to other areas of the health service. They are now keen to get back to providing a world-class breast cancer screening service for women on the Sunshine Coast,” Dr Roper said.

Women aged 50 – 74 can book a free breast screen by phoning 13 20 50 The facts: • 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50. Younger women do get breast cancer, but the risk of breast cancer increases dramatically after the age of 50.

• 9 out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. While women with a family history of breast cancer are more at risk, most women diagnosed have no family history of the disease at all.

• A breast screen every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early,

well before you or your doctor can feel anything.

• Women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a BreastScreen Queensland Service. Women aged 50-74 years are particularly encouraged to attend.

• Appointments are available now and no referral is needed. Phone 13 20 50 for an appointment or for more information.

How to stop being a people pleaser with Dr Sue Eaglesham People pleasing can be a real barrier to living an effective and happy life. Relying on approval from others to feel that you are okay is a quick pathway to feeling miserable, anxious, overburdened and resentful. If saying no is challenging for you, these are some ideas that might be helpful.

1) Learn to tell the difference between helping because it makes you feel good and helping because it makes you feel less guilty or bad.

If helping makes you feel good about doing it, that’s fine. If you are saying “yes” to avoid feeling guilty or bad, then it is probably being done to keep the other person happy. If you find yourself feeling resentful and wishing you were not in the situation, there is a good chance you are people pleasing and you need to learn to say “no”. By all means be kind, considerate and helpful - but not at your own expense.

2) Make sure that helping lines up with your values and interests.

Make sure that your choices about helping are guided by what you are interested in and whether they fit with your values. This is a good way to avoid doing things that are not a good fit and are about keeping others happy.

3) Practice being assertive.

Don’t confuse being assertive with being aggressive. It is quite possible to be polite, respectful and assertive. You don’t have to stop being nice, but you do need to realise that you can’t compel others to be happy by doing whatever they ask. If being assertive is a foreign concept, then try introducing it in small chunks. Try expressing an opinion about something small like your favourite food, movie or drink. Next, try politely disagreeing with someone’s opinion but be prepared to listen respectfully and ask questions about their point of view. Soon you will be ready to say “no” to requests for help that are unreasonable. If you practice often enough this will become your new normal.

4) Set boundaries.

Being able to set good boundaries and be clear about these does not make you a bad person. This comes back to saying “no” making you feel guilty or bad. The problem with this is that your self-worth becomes dependent on getting the approval of someone else. This is likely to lead you to feel anxious and out of control. Healthy boundaries let the good stuff in and keep the toxins out.

5) Stop saying sorry all the time.

People pleasers over-apologise to smooth things over and keep everyone happy. It is not helpful to take responsibility for things you did not do, and it can make it look like others’ ridiculous requests or impulsive actions were reasonable and justified. Save your apologies for when you actually do something wrong.

Don’t stop being kind, considerate, helpful or respectful as these all contribute to our community. Just learn to respect yourself as much as you do others.

What an abnormal year 2020 has been so far. Our region, like the entire country, is facing challenging times ahead as we better understand and recover from COVID-19. The most important thing right now is for council to help our community get back on its feet.

Now that the 2020 local government elections have been declared, I would like to again thank you, the Division 1 communities, for placing your trust in me as your council representative for another term. Personally, I would also like to again acknowledge and thank my supporters, family and friends.

Division 1, like the Sunshine Coast as a whole, is a diverse community of communities.

I’m excited about the projects that will be delivered this term, from the fantastic Landsborough streetscape project that is already underway, to continuing to upgrade public infrastructure and spaces in our wonderful Glasshouse Country townships.

I’m impressed by the diversity of strengths, skills and experience amongst our new council and look forward to working together to build a connected region that continues to thrive.

I was grateful to accept the nomination by my fellow councillors to be the Deputy Mayor. This is an important symbol of recognition for the hinterland and I am honoured to be the first hinterland-based Deputy Mayor in the history of the Sunshine Coast Council.

As always, I welcome feedback from my community and I look forward to representing you during this council term.

And finally, thank you to this, now digital, local newspaper for the continued opportunity for a regular column.

State Member for Glass House Last Monday, kindy kids, preppies, years 1, 11 and 12 students headed back to school after a prolonged period of learning from home due to COVID-19. From feedback I’ve heard, this is fantastic news for parents who have been feeling the pressure of still working (albeit from home) and being expected to teach their kids a full curriculum.

May 25 is the proposed return to school for students in the remaining years, but this is dependent on the Government conducting further assessments of the risks and benefits.

My stance is that it should be up to the parents – if they want or need to send their kids back to school they should be able to; or, if they’re not quite comfortable sending them back just now they should be able to continue learning from home. I hope you have the support you and your kids need. If not, please get in contact with me and I’ll see what I can do.

I’m seeing and hearing reports that residents of Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Maleny and Montville are practicing extraordinary social distancing and personal hygiene. Many of our cafés have had to completely alter their business models to keep afloat with only takeaways and everyone is being very respectful.

It’s disappointing to hear reports that visitors to our part of the world haven’t been observing the same protocols as locals since the COVID-19 restrictions have eased.

I hope that if we keep up our best practice, visitors will follow suit to keep themselves and everyone around them healthy.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in May • If you have had spring flowering seedlings that you’ve neglected or they’ve seen better days, it’s not too late to replant with Iceland poppies, pansies or snapdragons to fill in the gaps.

• Grass growth will be starting to slow down now but weeds won’t.

Keep on top of weeds, especially bindi-eye, clover and tropical chickweed. You can hand remove or use a selective weed spray – just check with the hardware or rural supplies centre in your town.

• Bare rooted roses will be in stores now but don’t rush in and buy, as the optimum time is the end of May. • Gingers and heliconias that have finished flowering – such as parrot’s beak heliconia – can be cut back now, leaving the new growth for next seasons flowering display.

• Apply a light dusting of lime to bare veggie beds. Don’t apply fertliser at the same time as the lime reacts with the nitrogen creating ammonia gas.

Coriander Plant leafy coriander plants now. The cooler temperatures will stop them bolting to seed.

• Your strawberry plants should be coming on well now. Apply a little pelletised manure and use fish and seaweed solutions regularly over the plants to keep them in good health. It’s not too late to put some in if you haven’t yet.

• It’s an ideal time to work in the garden because the temperature has dropped and so has the humidity. If you’ve got a major building or landscaping project, start it this month.

• Dahlias that are dying back should be trimmed off and those that have not yet started to die back can be trimmed to half their height. They’ll need to be lifted out of the ground next month.

• Cannas and chrysanthemums can be cut back as soon as they’ve finished flowering.

• Unfortunately, there are still a number of pests in the vegie garden. Spraying with insecticides may be difficult when your vegetables are nearly ready to pick. Dusting with Derris Dust or spraying with Dipel or Success will help keep most of the vegetable pests at bay, and they only have very short withholding periods so are safe to use the next day or so.

• Keep the water up to rudbeckia and Michaelmas daisy, so that suckers will form for division in August.

• If you’ve planted broad beans, pinch out their tips to encourage more flowers to form.

• Plant new citrus trees this month and next. Always remove any fruit before planting, or better still select trees without fruit for more vigour. Do not fertilise young trees until 3-4 months after planting.

• If you have not applied boron to your pawpaw trees, do it this month. Use 1 teaspoon per tree.

Botany 101 – Fruits

This lesson follows on from the previous two, where I described the male and female parts of a flower, and how the birds and the bees operate.

A fruit is just a fertilized and developed ovary, which often then bear the seeds.

It is the development of fruits which gave rise to the dominance of flowering plants across the land masses of the earth.

Fruits protect the seeds, aid in their dispersal and can assist in providing nutrients to a germinating seedling.

In the kitchen, ‘fruits’ are normally thought of as being the juicy and edible parts, like an apple, orange, grape, tomato or cherry.

But fruits are so much more than just these stereotypes.

Many other things commonly called ‘vegetables’ or ‘grains’ are actually – in the botanical sense – fruits including capsicums, cucumbers, pumpkins … even corn, oats and wheat are actually fruits.

Most fruits develop only when there is pollination and fertilization of the ovule.

But some plants, like bananas, pineapples and weirdly, navel oranges, develop fruits without fertilization. In botany, this is called parthenocarpy.

Now, some ‘seedless’ fruits – like grapes and watermelon – actually do have seeds, but they have been selectively bred so that the seeds stop developing when they are small. This is trait called stenospermocarpy and is a sought-after mutation in many commercial crops.

Fruits can be classified into a range of sub-groups, depending on the structure of the flower, the number of ovaries, the nature of the mature fruiting body (called the pericarp) – is it fleshy or dry, and does it split open when mature.

Fruits are also: simple – derived from one ovary; aggregate – formed from numerous ovaries of one flower multiple; or multiple – which is a cluster of individual ovaries of several flowers.

Pericarp dry and dehiscent (split open) • Legume or pod – all the members of the legume family have these fruits. Some are edible, some aren’t.

• Follicle – similar to a pod, but different as it splits along one side only.

Magnolia’s have this type of fruit.

• Capsule – these are dry structures which split open in a range of ways to release their seeds. Capsules are very common in the plant world, and include lilies, orchids, cotton, eucalypts and poppies.

• Silique – this is a fruit characterized by members of the mustard family – so the brassicas (broccoli, pak choy, mustard, etc). At maturity, the fruit splits into three, with the seeds attached to a central persistent portion.

Pericarp dry and indehiscent (don’t split open) • Achene – a sunflower is a good example.

The fruits are commonly called seeds, but the seed is actually inside the dry pericarp (remember that’s the word for the actual fruit ‘flesh’). In an achene, the pericarp may be separated easily from the seed coat.

• Grain (or caryopsis) – yes, grains are actually fruits. They are similar to an achene except the pericarp and the seed are firmly united all the way around. These include corn, wheat and rice.

• Samara – a typical feature of a samara fruit is having an outgrowth which forms a wing like structure. Maples and elms are good examples.

• Schizocarp – this is a dry fruit of two carpels that, when mature, split along the midline into two one-seeded halves. They include carrots, celery and parsley.

• Nut – colloquially, the term nut is given to a whole range of hard-shelled fruits and seeds.

But a true nut is – botanically speaking – a one-seeded non-splitting dry fruit with a hard or stony pericarp.

So true nuts are walnuts, acorns and macadamias.

Fleshy pericarp • Drupe – this is a single carpel (usually just with one seed). The seed is surrounded by a hard endocarp, surrounded by the fleshy mesocarp.

The skin is called the expocarp. It’s all Greek … endo – inside; meso – middle; exo – outside; and carp – fruit. Examples include cherries, olives, almonds and apricots.

• Berry – derived from a compound ovary, a berry has many seeds embedded in the flesh.

Most of what we call ‘berries’ aren’t, botanically, a berry. True berries include tomato, lemon, orange, lime, watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber and zucchini.

• Pome – a pome fruit is characteristic of the apple and pear family, but are also found with cotoneaster, loquat and hawthorns.

Aggregate fruits This is a compound fruit formed from numerous carpels of one individual flower.

The strawberry is a good example, as it is one flower with multiple carpels. Weirdly, the strawberry has its seed on the outside rather than the inside. Others include blackberry and raspberry. Aggregate fruits can be made up on multiples of the types of fruits described earlier – for example, it might be an aggregate of drupes such as raspberry, or achenes (strawberry).

Multiple fruits These are formed when a cluster of flowers develops into a single fruiting body. Examples include jackfruit, mulberry, figs and pineapples.

Figs are an interesting fruit, as the flowers are pollinated by very small wasps that crawl through the end of the flower (which is a multiple flower) in search of a safe place to lay their eggs. This evolutionary symbiotic relationship means that without the wasps, figs won’t set fruit.

Just for Laughs The officer and the juggler

A highway patrol car pulled over a vehicle on the Bruce Highway just near the Roys Road exit.

When the police officer asked the driver why he was speeding, the driver said he was a juggler and was on his way to do a show at the hospital for sick children. He didn't want to be late.

The officer told the driver he was fascinated by juggling and said if the driver would do a little juggling for him then he wouldn't give him a ticket.

He told the officer he had sent his equipment ahead and didn't have anything to juggle. The officer said he had some flares in the boot and asked if he could juggle them. The juggler said he could, so the officer got five flares out, lit them and handed them to him. While the man was juggling, a car pulled in behind the patrol car.

A drunken fella from Gympie got out, watched the performance, then went over to the patrol car, opened the rear door and got in.

The officer observed him and went over to the patrol car, opened the door asking the drunk what he thought he was doing.

The drunk replied, “You might as well take my ass to jail, ’cause there ain't no way in hell I can pass that test.”

Too smart to get caught?

A man goes out with his friends for the night. Before he leaves, he tells his wife, "I promise I will be home by midnight."

Midnight comes and goes. He finally arrives home at about 3am. As he walks in, he realizes the cuckoo clock is about to go off.

As it begins to go off, he has a flash of genius and decides to “coo” another nine times. He sneaks into bed satisfied with himself.

The next morning he wakes up and his wife has breakfast made. She doesn't seem to be mad. Satisfied with himself he asks her, "You sleep okay last night?"

She replies, "Yeah, but we need a new cuckoo clock."

He asks her why and she tells him, "last night it cooed three times. Then it yelled, ‘Crap!’ It cooed another six times and giggled a little bit. Finally, it cooed three more times, farted, and tripped on the carpet."

Sacred texts

A new monk starts living at the main monk headquarters. He is in charge of the copying of holy texts. He notices that all of the monks are copying copies of their sacred texts.

He goes to the head monk, "If there is an error in one of the copies, all of the subsequent copies will have the same error."

The head monk replies, "We have been doing it this way for centuries, but I understand your concern." So he heads to the cellar to check all of the main copies against the original texts.

Hours later no one has seen him and they begin to get worried. They send a monk to the cellar to check on him.

He finds him sitting and weeping next to their main text. He asks the head monk, "What's wrong? What did you find?"

The head monk looks at him, "It says celebrate!"
