elbourne Cup is one of my favourite days of the year – which considering I don’t even place a bet – or sometimes even know the names of the horses in the race until the day, I
still just love it. Well, I love the glamour, the dresses, the hats and fascinators, the fashion parades, the fun, the excuse to go out for lunch with the girls, and the good mood everyone is in at the local functions. Our lovely receptionist Sarah and I give ourselves about an hour and a half to race between Club Glasshouse, Beerwah RSL, Beerwah Hotel and the Glasshouse Sportsclub to take photos of as many groups as possible.

Hi Everyone
This year our newest team member Sonia Clarke also took her camera along to the Ettamogah Hotel, so between us, we captured a few hundred glamorous locals – including a few very stylish fellas! We have a page and a half of gorgeous photos, and if your photo was taken on the day and you haven’t made the ‘social pages’ you will want to check out our Facebook pages! If you recognise people in the photos that haven’t been tagged, make sure you tag them and tell them how great they look. And for those of you (like me) who enjoy a bit of glamour you won’t want to miss next week as we will be including the high school graduations that are happening this week.

Demolition assist need a feed
HINTERLAND ACCOUNTING SERVICES

Gumdale Demolition has come to town to take on the contract of removing the old buildings on Simpson Street, in preparation for the expansion of the Beerwah Marketplace.
12/60 Simpson Street, BEERWAH
For anyone who has driven past the site you will be very aware of who the contractors are and what quick work they seem to be making of the project. Gumdale Demolition have three weeks to complete the task and judging by all the discussion and photos of the demolition process on Facebook it has been keeping plenty of locals enthralled. What you may not know is how important it is for the company’s owner Trevor Lyons, to make sure they contribute back into our community as well. Trevor recently caught up with Beerburrum local Adrienne Heppel who runs the ‘Need a Feed’ Queensland branch and between the two of them they struck a great deal for our community. The Need a Feed program are planning to provide 200 food hampers for local families for Christmas which will be made possible by the $8,000.00 donation that Gumdale Demolition has generously provided. Adrienne said at this time of year there are many families who need that little bit extra to get them through the Christmas period. “At Need a Feed we like to think of it as giving them a hand up and not a hand out,” she said. “Need a Feed will be working with staff from the Hinterland Community Development Association

Adrienne Heppel from ‘Need a Feed’ thanks Trevor Lyons from Gumdale Demolition for his generous donation with a traditional Hongi Maori greeting through the local neighbourhood centres to organise the distribution of the hampers,” Adrienne said. Trevor and Adrienne both hail from New Zealand and have known each other for many years. When GCNews caught up with the two of them for a photo, they decided to go for the Hongi Maori greeting instead of the traditional handshake used by Australians. “We are so grateful for Trevor’s generosity and I just cannot thank him enough for helping out those in need of a feed in our community,” Adrienne said. Trevor was also very keen to make sure that while the company are working in Beerwah, they are purchasing what they can locally and are contributing back to the local economy, including accommodation and food etc.

National Champions on the Hinterland
Two students from the San Taekwondo Club at Beerwah and Maleny successfully competed in the National Taekwondo Championships during October. Nine-year-old Siena Cameron from Maleny won gold to become the national champion in her first year at national level competition. Instructor at Beerwah, Cameron Taylor, won the silver medal in the prestigious 74 kg open black belt division for the third year running after a tough day of competition. Coach Norm Taylor said “both players fought exceptionally well and I could not have asked any more from either of them.” Siena came through to the final against Western Australia and at the end of the last round, the scores were level. She went on to win in a thrilling golden point sudden death victory with a perfectly placed left foot kick. Cameron won his first fight against South Australia on penalty count back. He won his second fight against a NSW player with a knockout and after racing to a 10-2 lead in the first round of the final against Western Australia lost in the final seconds to the player currently ranked number 1 in the country. The national championships drew about 1500 competitors from across the country for the four days of competition in Brisbane. The teams from Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia were very strong as always. San Taekwondo is one of only two clubs on the Sunshine Coast that offers students the opportunity to compete at the top level for national and international competition. We are able to develop students though the clubs key values of Respect, Modesty, Self-Control, Perseverance and building an indomitable spirit. Classes are held at Maleny and Beerwah with a fun, no obligation free trial for new students and family discounts. For more information visit www.santkd.com or phone Cameron on 0437 571 540.

Is Josh a future Socceroo? Local Beerwah football player, Josh Wall, is off to play with the ‘Hammers’ next March. West Ham United – the ‘Hammers’ – is one of the top Premier League football teams in the UK. Promoting themselves as being ‘The Academy of Football’, they have had an established youth development system since the 1950’s. In recent years, the club has established a global network of International Elite Player Academies, where only the best of the best are chosen to participate in an annual two week training camp at the Hammers home grounds in Upton Park, East London. Josh, 14, has played soccer for over five years and has established himself as an accomplished goalkeeper. Josh was a regular Bee Gees player and in this last season played in the Under 14’s Buderim Wanderers team, where he was voted ‘Players Player of the Year’. As well as training three nights a week at the John Gorza Australian Goalkeeping Academy, Josh has also recently started training at the Queensland Institute of Sport and has been selected in the Sunshine Coast Fire representative team. His big chance came during the September school holidays when he attended the week-long West Ham United Oceania Academy National Camp at the Gold Coast. It was there that Josh caught the eye of the West ham talent scouts; he was identified out of hundreds of players aged 10 to 17 years from all over Australia and New Zealand. Josh’s mum, Kelly Wall said that they were over the moon when he received confirmation of the call-up. “As you can imagine, we’re happy that all the training and hard work Josh has done, is paying off. His love of soccer is showing through now with this being a fantastic opportunity for him,” she said.
Josh in action “Only two players at the under 14’s level were chosen – and Josh was one of them. “We’re all just so proud of him,” said Kelly. West Ham United Football Club has one of the most respected youth academies in world football. Under the direction of academy director Tony Carr, the West Ham United Academy has produced many players who have gone on to play at the very top level of professional football. According to Tony Carr there is lots of raw talent and some very good players that attend the training camp. “We are looking for a passion and enthusiasm for the game. You have got to love the game,” he said. “You have got to want the ball at your feet every minute of the day to learn and hone those techniques. “In the early years, it is just about developing skill, technique and individuality. Those are things we can encourage and the rest can come later,” said Tony. We all wish Josh the very best when he takes to the field with West Ham United next March.

MacKinley has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) – a life-limiting neuromuscular condition - and is enjoying the ride of his life each time he gets behind the steering wheel of the converted learner driver vehicle. The 17-year-old is thought to be the only person with DMD in Australia to gain a learner’s permit. “Thanks to MacKinley’s hard work and determination he is still walking which is amazing in itself,” Mrs Brisbane said. “So the fact he can actually drive a car is a surprise after the surprise, and you get a kick out of it as that’s not what you expected to happen. “It’s one of those priceless moments in life, seeing MacKinley getting out of the car after his first driving lesson with a huge grin on his face. The Glasshouse Country Christian College student will soon graduate from Year 12 and has already completed two semesters at Sunshine Coast University in the Headstart Program and has applied to study there in 2014. “If you asked him why he is so determined, he would say it’s because he wants to stay on his feet. To do that, he gets on the treadmill and exercises and stretches every day, and watches his diet very closely. Mrs Brisbane said MacKinley wouldn’t be as healthy, without the support of MontroseAccess. “He was diagnosed at two and we were referred to MontroseAccess immediately as it is important that you have early intervention, or you are on the back foot. Mrs Brisbane said MacKinley had taught her a lot of things about herself. “You don’t take anything for granted. You get pleasure in the smallest things, as you should.” MacKinley after his first driving lesson
Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help. It is estimated that approximately 85% of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis. The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today, or visit www.adjusttolife. com.au Beerwah 5494 0499 or Maroochydore 5443 4545

Introducing Bev Dooley The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre is an icon of our region. The facility managers, Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd, describe it as the ‘Jewel in their Crown’, a sentiment which we all would definitely agree with. The centre – staffed by a dedicated band of volunteers (or as they are now called ‘Ambassadors’) – has a new face at the helm. Last week Bev Dooley started her employment as the Ambassador Coordinator and has been kept busy from day one. Simon Ambrose, CEO of SCDL, said they are delighted to welcome Bev. “Bev will be the main point of contact and support for the volunteers at the centre and will also be responsible for rolling out a training program,” said Simon. Bev welcomed two new Ambassadors who have signed up as volunteers – Doug Loveday and Ro Promnitz. Doug is a Glass House Mountains born and bred local, who has volunteered before at Meals on Wheels. “I had some time to spare and thought that it would be good to use my local knowledge to help tourists,” he said. Ro is a newcomer to the area, having moved to Glass House Mountains in February from Brisbane. “I’m a retired teacher, so volunteering at the centre is a nice way for me to use my professional skills as well as learn more about my new home,” she said. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer (especially on a weekend) drop by the centre and leave your details. Next week we’ll bring you more on Bev and her background. NOVEMBER 13 2013
10% DISCOUNT FOR SENIORS & PENSION CARD HOLDERS EVERY WEDNESDAY www.gcnews.com.au
Does your bank offer 26% return on investment?
Business feature
Example 1 Power bill = $300 per quarter (approximately) Two retired people at home for most of the day, on most days. If they spend $3,700 (approximately) on a very good quality Impact Solar System, we’ve calculated what they would save and earn: Solar power produced = 9kwh. Power needed to run their house during the day = 9kwh. This power bill would drop by $243 (approximately), which is a 26% return on investment, or about 21% better than bank interest.
Example 2 This is Harold. Harold is retired, and he is fed up with constantly rising charges for insurances, water, electricity and car registration. So Harold decided to invest in a very strong hedge against inflation. This is Vanessa, realising that her hedge against inflation is a much stronger hedge than she imagined. Vanessa invested in a solar system from Pat and Nerina at Bi-Rite Maleny and received a wonderful hedge against inflation. Study these examples (right) and see how you can build your hedge against rising costs.
Power bill = $700 per quarter (approximately) Two people who work from home, or have a swimming pool etc. If they spend $7,200 (approximately) on a very good quality Impact Solar System, we’ve calculated what they would save and earn the following: Solar power produced = 18kwh. Power used to run their home, business and pool during the day = 16kwh. The power used and not purchased from the grid is 16kwh at 28 cents per kwh = $4.48 per day, or $403 per quarter. Plus the surplus 2kwh not used earns 14 cents per kwh = 28 cents per day, or $25 per quarter. These people will reduce their bill by $403 per quarter, plus they have received a credit for power exported of $25 per quarter. So their investment of $7,200 will actually return $1,712 per year for them. This represents a return on their investment of 23.7%, or 18.7% more than they would receive in the bank. So ask yourself – which hedge are you going to build against inflation? PS. Harold’s hedge did not stop him paying less for his electricity, but Vanessa’s certainly did! Please talk to 1300 4 SOLAR about how you can hedge your options to dramatically cut your electricity bill.
Bi-Rite Maleny – locals supporting locals Peachester locals Pat and Nerina have lived in the area for 24 years and for the last six years have proudly owned and operated the Bi-Rite Electrical store at Maleny. They have been selling solar systems for the past four years. 80th birthday celebrations
Community News The Rotary Calendar in stores now Recently the Rotary Calendar for 2014 was launched at the Beerwah Hotel. This year marked a significant achievement as it’s the 10th calendar the club has produced. A number of the businesses were acknowledged for being involved in the project since its
Raffle reaps rewards
Stacey Lythgo and her sons Harry and Toby are happy winners of a brand new bike thanks to a recent raffle hosted by Luke’s IGA and the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. The raffle and sausage sizzle was a great success. Jodie from Luke’s IGA with Neighbourhood Centre volunteers Colleen and Jo brought a sizzle to the street with sausages for passersby and lots of laughs. The raffle and sausage sizzle raised $390.00 for the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. The Neighbourhood Centre offers a range of services including information, referrals, emergency relief and hall hire for various local groups. President of the Glass House Neighbourhood Centre, Colleen Clarke, said the fundraising with support from Luke’s IGA was greatly appreciated. “The raffle and sausage sizzle was a hit. Thanks very much to Luke’s IGA for donating the bike and running the raffle and sausage sizzle with our
beginnings, including Australia Zoo, Basset Bark, Glasshouse Design and Manufacturing and the Beerwah Hotel. Many of the local businesses that advertise each year in the calendar attended on the night to show their support for the initiative. The theme for the next photographic competition where the images will be chosen for the 2015 calendar has been decided on to give local photographers’ additional time to get their entries prepared. ‘Four Seasons of the Glass House Mountains’ is the theme – so for all those budding photographers out there - you still have a few days of spring left before summer hits with full force so get your cameras out and start snapping. Don’t forget that the calendar makes an excellent Christmas gift and can easily be posted interstate or overseas.
Neighbourhood Centre. We are looking forward to having this again in the future,” she said. If you are interested in volunteering, starting or joining a group, hiring the hall or are seeking more information, please visit the Neighbourhood Centre at 4 Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains or call 5496 9734.

The Frizzo family recently celebrated the 80th birthday of patriarch Italo, at Domenico’s on Kings. Italo grew up on a farm at Palmview and over the years has worked hard - from Gordonvale in north Queensland then back around the Glasshouse area. During those years he also played hard, at bowls, tennis, cricket and darts, excelling in them all. In retirement he developed an interest in his wife Noela’s orchids, which rapidly became a passion. Together they now enjoy involvement in growing and showing their prizewinning plants. Noela and Italo with their children. From left: Sandra, Adrian, Italo and Carol, with Noela in front
Coochin Creek Bushland Group
Mooloolah Waterwatch and Landcare have shown what can be done with a dedicated band of volunteers – Mooloolah River Valley is the only watercourse in the Pummicestone catchment that has improved in water quality. Coochin Creek is among those that have declined and tests by SEQ Waterways have shown it is the main source of excess phosphate and mud in the Pummicestone Passage. Looking after our waterways is of great importance to the community. Beerwah is fortunate to have two excellent areas of bushland nearby on the Coochin Creek – one in the State High School grounds and the other in Council’s environmental reserve, which stretches from the school to the Roberts Road Waste Transfer site along the edge of Woodgrove estate. The high school bushland contains large trees with hollows which provide nesting places for cockatoos, parrots, gliders and other animals. Preserving these areas of bushland and enhancing their quality is essential for the wellbeing of Coochin Creek and to prevent erosion and help flood mitigation. Besides that, these areas contain a great variety of wildlife and diverse habitats, including some endangered ecosystems. The Coochin Creek Reserve contains the popular and attractive rockholes area and has a boundary with the Emma Park open space off the end of Hickory Drive and Caralan Way. Coochin Creek Bushland Group is a band of volunteers who have been helping to improve the experience around the rockholes by removing weeds, especially lantana, and planting natives. An agreement has been reached with council, thanks to Cr Rick Baberowski, to further upgrade the area by extending the bushland along the southern edge of Emma Park with planting and regrowth. A path will wind through this to connect Hickory Drive to the rockholes. Wetland areas along the creek adjacent to Emma Park and the rockholes will be rehabilitated, and the many weeds removed. It is hoped the wetlands project will be made possible by assistance from SEQ Catchments, thanks to Susie Chapman. Enhanced entry points and signage by council will ensure people are aware of the importance and attributes of these parks. The Bushland Group also monitors water quality. To accomplish all of this this, Coochin Creek Bushland Group will work with council and SEQ Catchment’s enthusiastic staff. However, our group is in need of more members, so here is an opportunity for those who enjoy the area to take part! You can join us in this worthwhile community project by calling Roger on 0435 347 662 or council’s community liaison officer Rhonda on 0439 702 160. www.gcnews.com.au
Feed and fodder
Business feature
By careful research and listening to friends and family, new business owners Mick and Fleur realised there may have been a gap in the local market. They are thrilled to have now opened Feed and Fodder Beerwah and are pleased to be able to offer something a little bit different. Starting from a love of animals, with horses, dogs, birds, and chickens all being part of the family, they understood the need of having to regularly drive out of the area to find certain things. With a family history link to Beerwah going back many years, wanting to keep business here was a high priority for them both. “We feel we have found our niche,” Fleur says. “There is no need to drive to the coast – and in complementing the other animal outlets in town, we feel the area can now offer a complete service to locals for anything ‘animal’.”
And as well as providing for our pampered hooved, furry, feathered and fluffy friends, they are offering plenty for all the garden lovers too. From organic sugar cane mulch and potting mix, to cow and poultry manure – please call in to see how they can help your garden grow. “With the promise of rain coming soon it’s the best time to get organised in the garden,” says Fleur, “and we can also make it easy by offering local deliveries too.” They have a variety of human-grade garlic, epson salts, chia, psyllium husks and bicarb to buy in bulk too. And if you are looking for anything in particular, please ask. They are happy to source items wherever possible, at the best price. If you have any feedback or items you would like to be available regularly, they would like to know too. Please make sure you visit during November to go into the draw for your chance to win $10,000.

Locals entering the Beerwah Library this week will have been reminded about the importance of being Bushfire prepared with the Glasshouse Rural Fire Service static display in the library foyer.
Peachester Garden Club
Contributed by Patricia Bradford At our last meeting, Pam and John Innes spoke about highlights of their recent Festival of Spring tour. Their travels took them through New South Wales, Canberra, The Snowy Mountains and some of the southern part of Queensland. The Floriade and a trip to a tulip farm, Parliament House and the War Memorial in Canberra were part of the tour. Other places visited included chocolate, cheese and biscuit factories, as well as some wineries and farms. Sounded like a great tour. Results of the competition bench for September are 1st Margaret Ferris 16 points, 2nd Pam Innes 14 points. The November meeting is our final one for the year. It will be held at my place (244 Pikes Road Glass House Mountains) on Thursday, November 21, at 9.30am. Please bring along your choice of meat for a barbecue lunch and a chair, salads will be provided. Visitors are always welcome. Beerwah Lions Club
Contributed by Bob Banner Beerwah Lions recently gathered at the Landsborough Hotel for a social Sunday luncheon. It was an opportunity for Club president Rita Sanderson to present Peter Pollock, representing the Landsborough Hall Committee, with a cheque for $700.00 toward the refurbishment of the hall. The Lions had received the $700.00 a few weeks previously from the hotel, for their involvement in the pig race events. The Lions had a busy weekend to begin November. Not only did they play a role with car parking at the Glasshouse Mountains Music Festival, the monthly can collection saw 295 kilograms of empty aluminum cans purchased and sent off for recycling.

with Gus Bankfoot House Stone Memorial
On October 16, last a small but significant ceremony took place at Bankfoot House, Glass House Mountains. Assisted by Helen Page, Bankfoot descendant Ethel Burgess planted an iceberg rose on the northern side of the memorial cairn to Mary and William Grigor. An iceberg rose also grows on the southern side of the memorial. The tradition of growing iceberg roses each side of the memorial began in 2002 following the death of Jack Ferris. At Jack’s funeral, Annabella Fraser gave Bill Ferris an iceberg rose to plant on the southern side, so the Ferris family planted a matching rose on the northern side. Unfortunately the northern rose did not survive, hence the recent planting of a replacement. (Annabella Fraser’s husband, John, is a great grandson of William and Mary Grigor) Fittingly, October 16 this year was exactly 145 years since Mary and William Grigor established the House in 1868. Bill Ferris built the stone memorial in 1968, on the 100th anniversary of the selection. Ethel Burgess and Helen Page plant the replacement iceberg rose
Durundur Monument, Cruice Park Woodford
A monument commemorating the first Durundur homestead, built by the Archer brothers in 1841, was officially unveiled by Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AC, Governor of Queensland, on October 26 The original 1841 homestead was a rough slab building cut from local timbers and in 1841 was believed to be the most northerly inland settlement of the colony of New South Wales, not accessed by ship. (Queensland separated from NSW in 1859). Sadly, the homestead no longer exists. The monument was designed and created by local Woodford sculptor, Guy Robinson, and commissioned by the Woodford Historical Society. Adjacent to the monument, a plaque was also unveiled by Professor Michael Schuetz, Honorary Consul to the Federal Republic of Germany, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt and his association with Durundur Station in 1842. Members from the Friends of Bankfoot House were on hand to witness the celebrations with the knowledge that Mary Grigor, nee Fenwick, was a former employee at Durundur Station prior to her marriage to William Grigor in 1863.

Storm season is upon us!
Social media for the time poor
With summer and the ‘storm season’ approaching, it is timely to talk once again about protecting computers from power surges and black outs. Loss of hardware or data can be a hard and expensive lesson! The best form of PC protection at all times is to be plugged into a quality UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). This is a surge protector and voltage regulator with a back up battery. The better ones actually talk to your PC via USB, so when power drops out, the UPS instructs the PC to close all programs safely and then shut down, all under battery power. For Laptop users, this is not such a great concern, however, plugging into a surge protector may just save your power adapter and in some severe cases your laptop. With no UPS, if you're lucky enough to be home before a storm hits, you should power down your PC and unplug it from the wall. BUT, that isn’t all; the most vulnerable route for a voltage spike is through your telephone line. We have seen some pretty severe cases where a Lightning strike has merely passed a telephone pole, with enough EMF (Electro-Magnetic Force) to completely render useless every device connected to the router by wire (Ethernet). EMF will surge down a phone line and through your equipment like an electrical Tsunami… taking out everything in its path. The safest way to protect your equipment during an electrical storm is first to disconnect your telephone line from the wall (this is your source of ADSL as well as telephone), and then shut down your computers and disconnect from the power. Unfortunately, even a moderate UPS is no protection against a huge EMF spike. For further information and tips, checkout www. mooloolahpc.com.au If you do suffer computer failure after a storm, contact us at Mooloolah Computers on 0405 125 662 and we’ll do our best to get you back on line.
You’ve heard that Social Media is the way to go, but you’ve decided that it’s just not for you. It doesn’t suit your business model, you don’t have time to worry about it and frankly you prefer the old ways. 2013 seems to have been the most stressful year on record for almost all business owners I speak with. In my opinion it’s because there’s just so much we can and should be doing for our businesses, especially when it comes to free and effective online avenues, that we feel we will never get any downtime. Unfortunately though, another pattern I’ve noticed is that local business owners who have never had to advertise before, relying on wordof-mouth referrals for 20 years or more, have suddenly found that the pool of providence seems to have dried up. The fact is that more than 50% of Australians regularly use Social Media now, particularly Facebook, and this avenue has become the new word-of-mouth. So even the time poor should really consider at least having a Facebook presence, which is free and quick to set up. Just picture Mrs Jones waking up this morning to find her kitchen sink is leaking everywhere. Grabbing her mobile phone, which is permanently connected to Facebook, she quickly types 'plumber' in the Facebook search box and a list of five plumbers appear. Out of those five, she can see that 15 of her friends 'like' one of those plumbers in particular. Who do you think Mrs Jones is going to call today? Even if you’re time poor, just having a free account on Facebook allows your customers to “like” and recommend you. All you need to do is take a quick glance at your account each day to ensure you respond to anyone who has taken the time to comment or ask you a question.
TIME POOR? A good Social Media strategy can take 15 minutes per week.
And better still, there’s $$ no ongoing costs! $$ 3 hour intensive social media setup and strategy session at your own premises.

Leading the Way
The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce is continuing to lead the way, encouraging all residents to support local small business in Glasshouse Country. I referred to the ‘Shop Local 1st’ campaign in my last column, since then the new chamber management team has developed the promotional material. You will see this displayed in many local business premises that may or may not be members of the Chamber. You will also see the bumper stickers on cars and other responsible places. The design of the banners highlight ‘Glasshouse Country’ the smaller stickers not only promote Glasshouse Country but each of the communities. We invite you to visit or contact any of the chamber members and ask them for your community sticker. This project is about focusing on the Glasshouse Country First. You may ask, who are the chamber members? Easy! just go to the revitalised website www.glasshousemountains.com.au and go to the ‘Our Members’ tab to access the information. And best of all, you will find out about the services provided by local small business. The challenge for you NOW is to, Know your local Small Businesses! Know what they can supply! and ASK what your Local Business operator can do for you! Please take these steps before you go to all points of the compass or into ‘E-space’ before visiting the chamber’s website. Remember, Local small business will be there tomorrow if you support it today. ‘Shop Local 1st’ is now in Glasshouse Country, together let’s make it work.

Aged Care - Get ready now for a worry-free future
with Ross Wolstencroft It’s a happy thought that we’re all living longer, but this means Australia is facing an ageing population. Over the past 10 years there’s been a staggering 26% rise in people aged over 64. This trend is continuing. It’s one of life’s inevitabilities that one day you, your partner or your parents will need to move into aged care. Naturally, you’ll want the best possible outcome for all concerned. However, this can be a very emotional and testing time, and there’s a lot to consider. In fact, you’re required to make sometimes difficult and complex decisions which can affect the level of aged care fees to be paid, the pension payments you or your loved one may receive, the timing of any sale of the family home, and more. The Four Steps to Aged Care Security It’s worthwhile learning a little about the process. Take the following steps one at a time and you can minimise worries and reduce the stress of what can be an emotional journey. Step 1: Aged Care Assessment Firstly, arrange an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment. This will allow you to access most government-funded community care services and care homes. Step 2: The right aged care facility Your ACAT appointment will guide you on the appropriate level of care – from low-level hostel to high-level nursing home. Also consider cultural, spiritual, dietary and linguistic needs of the person going into care, as well as recreational and social activities.
Step 3: Understand the financial implications Going into aged care represents a big change in the way an individual’s finances are organised. There will be a one-off bond or ongoing accommodation charge to pay based on assessable assets when first entering care. Daily fees also apply, to cover living expenses and general care. Be aware that extra service fees relating to luxuries, facilities and activities offered may also apply. Step 4: Make the big decisions Finally, you’ll need to make some important financial decisions; how to afford the chosen facility, what assets to use and whether to sell the family home. Mistakes can be costly at this stage and it is vital that you are aware of all costs and understand what they mean. So, before making any commitments, seek professional advice. We can talk you though everything you need to know to make the right choices, so why not give us a call. The above information is not to be taken as personal advice as it does not take into account any individual’s objectives, financial situation or needs. Tips to help you get home loan free faster Taking out a home loan is often a long-term commitment, and can be with you for years. After all, purchasing property is one of the biggest investments most people will make in their lives - more so than buying a car or new television. And sometimes, when looking at your remaining balance, you may feel overwhelmingly hopeless. But don’t let it get you down; there are a number of things you can do to help tackle your mortgage mountain and become debt-free faster. Retain repayment amounts Following the cash rate reduction 18

to the historically low 2.5 per cent back in August, many lenders passed these savings on in full to their customers. If you can afford to keep it up, continue making your original repayment amount. This extra $50 - $100 per repayment may not seem like much, but over the lifetime of your loan, you can take out a decent sized chunk of debt without making any major changes. Make extra repayments If you happen to come into a large sum of money - perhaps an endof-year work bonus - your natural
inclination could be to splurge. Perhaps taking a holiday, or refurbishing your home? The best course of action, however, could be to make a large lump sum payment into your home loan debts. Reducing your mortgage as fast as possible will help you to come out better off financially in the future, by removing your main source of expense. Make fortnightly rather than monthly repayments Increasing the number of repayments you make can help you to rapidly reduce your home
loan balance. Furthermore, this will also help to reduce the amount of time spent making home loan repayments, which is great news for you in the long run. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

School News
You Said It
Fashions in the school ground While punters tried their luck at backing a winner on the Melbourne Cup, students at Landsborough State School contested their own highly anticipated Fashions on the Field event. Students and teachers took to the catwalk, parading outfits of various styles and colours. There were fascinators and frocks galore amongst the girls, whilst the boys looked very stylish in their trousers and dressy shorts. Some students went to a lot of effort, which made the judges' decision very difficult. Prizes were awarded for the male and female winners in lower, middle and upper school classes.

Wonderful boost for Beerwah SHS Contributed by Tanya Hayden Staff, students and parents / caregivers from Beerwah State High School would like to express their sincere thanks to the Pastoral group and congregation of the Suncoast Church for all the fantastic work they did at the school on Saturday, October 19, as part of their ‘Safe City Project’ initiative. It was absolutely amazing to see the number of people who spent the day at Beerwah SHS working together to complete such varied projects as:- laying concrete paths, externally painting several classroom blocks, bobcats on site to remove plants and provide new garden beds for replanting, tree lopping to improve an area that now will be utilised more effectively by students at lunch breaks and generally cleaning and picking up rubbish throughout the grounds.
It was great to see so many people all happily working together to perform such a great community service and we are really appreciative of the work they have done to keep Beerwah SHS looking it’s best. Special thanks must also go to Angela Miller (BSM), Mark Reed (Facilities Officer) and Geoff Nilsson (Groundsman) who were instrumental in liaising with Suncoast Church and spent a lot of time in preparation for the day. It was also great to see Mrs Toovey (P&C) and her daughter Cordelia (President of Beerwah SHS Student Council) also pitching in to help with the work. It was great way to spend a Saturday and I am sure that as students and community walk through the school they will appreciate all of the hard work.
Biggest awards’ night in GCCC history Glasshouse Country Christian College has a big problem, but it's one that the College is happy to embrace. The Middle and Senior School student population is now about 430 students – far too many to fit into the adjacent Glasshouse Country Baptist Church for special events. This year the Secondary Awards Night was moved to the Caloundra Events Centre and the 900 seat auditorium was almost full of students, staff and proud parents. The presentation of awards was made by special guests including Mr Andrew Powell, Mr Mark McArdle, Mr Rick Baberowski, Mr Tony Debrincat from Rotary, LCDR Tyrone Douglas and Mrs Pam Newell. Along with the academic, diligence, and character awards there were individual awards such as Dux, Year 9 All Rounder, Long Tan, Rotary All Rounder and Principal’s Award. The award that best embodies the character, values and history of the College is called the Emily Lord Award, named in honour of the godly woman who birthed the vision for the College. This year the presentation was especially significant as Jacqueline Newell, current captain and descendant of Emily Lord received the award which was presented by her grandmother, Mrs Pam Newell. The night was punctuated with beautiful musical 20 |

and dance performances plus a touch of humour with various photos and movies showing fun times throughout the year. Part of the evening that everyone holds their breath for is the announcement of the new Middle and Senior School Captains for 2014. Congratulations to Alisha Mens and Rory Tait as the Middle School Captains and Ben Giles and Courtney Sinclair as College Captains in 2014. The handing over ceremony was particularly touching with the current captains lighting a candle and using it to pass the flame to the new captains. After such an exceptional event Glasshouse Country Christian College is looking forward to seeing what its talented students achieve in 2014. In response to the article ‘Traffic Lights for the intersection on Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way Glass House’. As a Beerwah resident, many of us have been waiting a long, long time for our local and state members to either install traffic lights or a roundabout on the intersection of Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road. One member always blames the other, or makes a statement like there are insufficient funds and we consider it is not warranted at this time. I might add not long after those statements, they give themselves a healthy pay rise! To the residents of Glass House: don’t hold your breath waiting for your traffic light – because we at Beerwah have given up as it’s only a pipe dream. Colin Batch Beerwah
Chook sheds
I strongly agree with ‘Quiet Neighbour’ about the appalling stench that emanates from the chook sheds on Barrs Road. I live in Parkview Road which is about a kilometre from these sheds, as the crow flies, across the old pineapple fields. We had no idea of their close proximity to this housing estate when we first purchased our block here in 2001, and for the last 12 years we have had to put up with the terrible cloying smell that wafts out of them on a very regular basis. It is nothing short of disgusting. I am sure some locals would say ‘well the sheds were there first’ and they are probably right. Nevertheless, when this area was re-classified from agricultural land to allow the development of a large housing estate some years ago, surely the regulations regarding proximity of malodorous commercial activity near residential land should have been properly reviewed? Glass House Mountains is an area of outstanding natural beauty but it is spoilt by the smell of these chook sheds. There is currently a development approval in place to build over 70 new dwellings in the old pineapple fields between Poole Road and Barrs Road, which would be more or less right next door to these sheds. God help the poor souls who might end up living there in years to come because they will have trouble breathing in their own homes. No-one should have to endure that. In other countries, all commercial chicken farms are required to install ventilation systems on their sheds to filter and control odour emissions in their local environment. Is this a third world country? Why don’t we have similar industry standards in place? I for one will definitely be lodging a complaint with DAFF and requesting they do something about it as a matter of urgency. Jenny Waldock Glass House Mountains
Telstra tower
I have been wondering when Telstra are going to switch on the new tower in Coulon Road, Glass House Mountains. I was led to believe that the new tower had been switched on, but I have not noticed any improvement in the quality of service at all. During weekends, here is a noticeable drop in what service we receive now. I am sure I am not the only Telstra customer who has to put up with this unsatisfactory service. I live at the top end of Coonowrin Road. Richard Glass House Mountains www.gcnews.com.au
Editor’s note
There have been some changes with the operations of the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information Centre, with Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SDCL) reorganising their staffing and volunteer arrangements. Unfortunately, this has caused some angst amongst the community, including some volunteers to reconsider their involvement with the centre. Following on is a letter we received from one volunteer. GCNews has met with Simon Ambrose, CEO of SCDL and we will be working with them in any capacity we can to encourage our readers to become a volunteer at this great resource for the whole community (see page 8). Dear Sir/Madam, I have enjoyed working at the centre. Due to the fact that there will be no permanent staff to man the Information Centre I have decided to relinquish my volunteer position at the Centre. For the past seven and a half years it was my pleasure to serve my community and visitors and it has been so very rewarding. I am very sad and disappointed to have to say ‘goodbye’. With best wishes to you. Regards, Lydia
Well done
With the traffic lights at last turned on, it is a huge relief for those Landsborough residents and tourists who have risked their lives trying to access Steve Irwin Way and Hardwood Road for many years. Caravaners and residents who live in Hardwood Road can now safely enter / exit with safety. Tourists, at the weekend, will no longer have a prolonged wait to join Steve Irwin Way when returning from Maleny and the Blackall Range tourist drive. As a 10 year resident of Hardwood Road, I have used that crossing several times a day and anyone who is familiar with the intersection will know just how dangerous it was. Sadly lives have been lost in the past. I would like to pay tribute to the Main Roads people who carried out this upgrade. Everything was done with the minimum of interruption to what is a busy intersection. The finished job is a credit to the planners and the workers who would have been working under stressful conditions. ‘Well done’ to all concerned. Thank you. Joanna Aitken Landsborough
Kindness happens
Rather than discuss the nasty side of human nature, let's comment on the common kindness that happens every day. I am a not so young lady, who made a purchase at our local Aldi store of a 23 kilogram garden table that would obviously not fit into my little hatchback car. Not only did a father and two sons notice my predicament, but they took control, loaded the table into their Ute, then followed me all the way back to my Villa at Beerburrum, unload the
table and refused to take any remuneration for their kindness. We are only too ready to condemn human actions when so many simple courtesies go without comment. Thank you to this family and to the young man driving, good luck with your driver’s license. Margaret Chapman Beerburrum
Congratulations to the Sports Club
On behalf of Community Recycling Inc I would like to congratulate Glasshouse Sports Club on the festival on Saturday, November 2. The entertainment of music, food, flair action motor cycles, jumping castle and bar, everything was fantastic, the whole thing was very well run and the security and police made sure nothing untoward occurred. In the sponsors area, everyone was well looked after. Well done Glasshouse Sports Club. John Nisbett President of Community Recycling Inc
Sad fact for dogs
I endorse the complaint by Alex Low of Clearview Drive about irresponsible dog owners. Recently I rang the Sunshine Coast Council to complain about unattended and unregistered dogs in the same area. The council employee was sympathetic, but explained that only two staff members investigated complaints and the current list of complaints awaiting visits was just short of 800. She said that it would be several months before council officers could respond. Further, that the council officers, when they did come, would offer the dog owner some advice. A first warning would be issued if the dog was unregistered. The dog population has gone way beyond reasonable limits. In my experience, some dogs are far more intelligent and better mannered than their owners: a fact that is sad for the dog. Rod Lever Glass House Mountains
Open Garden success
We would like to thank everyone who supported our open garden on October 19 and 20 including the sponsors Coochin Creek Co-op, Nespresso and RACQ Careflight, the volunteers and all the visitors. With everyone’s combined efforts we raised approximately $5,500.00 which is just fantastic. Tic and Angela Davis Glass House Mountains

Senior Moments Flair looking after local seniors
All of our customers are extremely valuable to us, but this week we would like to highlight the services we have available in our store for those extra special people in our community, our seniors. Many people have difficulty getting their rings to fit comfortably because of swollen knuckles. Once the rings are big enough to fit over the knuckles they are too loose and spin around on the finger. Our jewellers are very willing and able to help with this annoying problem. It is also sometimes difficult to fasten chains and pendants – we have a very reasonably priced range of magnetic clasps which can be fitted to almost any chain to make fastening really easy. Some watch clasps can be extremely difficult, come in store to see our great range of stretch band watches – and yes many of them have large clear numbers as well. Why not come in and have your precious jewellery cleaned and polished so it will look brand new again. These days you don’t get much for ABSOLUTELY FREE – so hurry in to take advantage of this great offer.

Pets for life
Back in our August 14 edition, we introduced you to a service for senior citizens called ‘Pets for Life’. Many seniors dearly love their pets but as we age, it can become more difficult to take care of our pet’s physical needs, taking them for walks, grooming and vet visits. To make sure that pet owners can continue having their pets live with them, the completely free ‘Pets for Life’ service has been set up by Caloundra Community Centre Inc. through a consortia with University of the Sunshine Coast Faculty of Science, Health and Education, Bluecare Caloundra, Sunshine Coast Council, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS), Volunteering Sunshine Coast and Oz Care. This wonderful program works by matching up pet owners with screened and accredited volunteers who can assist them as needed. Pet care activities include (but are not limited to) dog walking, access to veterinary services through the provision of transport and assistance in the general wellbeing and care of the pet which includes administering medication. The volunteers not only support the pets, but they also spend time with the client offering companionship and creating connections to activities and services. The project is aimed at promoting healthy aging amongst seniors, which addresses issues of social isolation, fosters neighbourhood connections, has the capacity to support carers, and promotes the health and wellbeing benefits of animal companionship. Pets for Life has a number of volunteers in the Glasshouse Country region who are ready, willing and waiting to assist our local seniors who need that little extra support in caring for their pets. If you, or someone you know, would like to find out more about how the free of charge Pets for Life program could be of assistance, give Vicky a call on 5491 4000.

The Mattress Gallery, on Beerburrum Road, Caboolture (look for the pink building), is more than just a bargain priced mattress clearance outlet. Store managers Steve and Mary have been looking after locals for over three years now and have the knowledge and experience to help you with any bedroom fit-out. They specialise in electric adjustable beds including their new rotation bed and have a fantastic range of great value furniture package deals which need to be seen to be believed. Call in to see their great range in store. They are open Friday, 9.00am – 5.00pm, Saturday, 9.00am – 4.00pm and Sunday, 10.00am – 4.00pm. Or you can check out the website www.mattressgallery.com.au
Is Probus for you?
Why not come along and see what we are all about? Probus is open to membership of active retirees or people no longer working full time, to provide opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests, build new relationships and enjoy the fellowship of new friends. We participate in monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club where we invite a speaker along who always provides an interesting and informative talk on their chosen subject. Probus provides a free morning tea and our members bring along a small plate of food to share for lunch. We have a vegetable and fruit box donated to us by Matilda's Fruit Barn which we offer as a door prize. Our monthly outings to various and interesting places are always popular with our group. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Call Val, our membership officer for more information on 5494 1406.
We have been established in Beerwah for approximately 28 years and offer services tailored for seniors including entry and exit into Retirement Villages, conveyancing, mortgages (including reverse mortgages) and family law. More particularly, we practice in the following areas:
Wills and Enduring Power of Attorney Having a current Will means that you decide what happens to your estate when you die. Reviewing your Will regularly is important to ensure that it accurately reflects your wishes and that it deals with all of your property. Having a current Enduring Power of Attorney allows someone you know and trust to make decisions for you in relation to your health and financial affairs if you lose capacity and are unable to do so yourself. Failure to have either of these important documents can cause your family great distress, be time consuming and expensive.
Estates If a loved one passes away we can assist you to administer their estate. This can involve collecting in assets and ensuring liabilities are paid. Grants of Probate are sometimes required by asset holders and we provide valuable advice to you in this regard. Executors of an estate have many obligations upon them. It is vital you are aware of these obligations if you are appointed as an Executor.
Advanced Health Directive Allows you to decide in advance the level and degree of intensity of medical care you wish to receive and gives guidance to medical professionals in relation to very specific circumstances if you are not able to participate in the decision making at the time.

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network
Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc. We care our environment Avid gardener andabout owner of Professional Weeds Solution
Preserving our Eco-System Many of us are lucky enough to live on acreage where our properties have common boundaries with natural bushland. What we may not realise how easy it is to contaminate or damage the environment. No matter how small the area, it is our responsibility to protect and conserve what little remains of our bushland, flora and fauna for generations to come. A common attitude is that those few garden weeds you dump over the fence or in the forest next door are of no consequence. Take a look at the ‘environmental weeds’ often found along streams or even along the fringes of our National Parks. Even growing certain exotics in your home garden can be disastrous for our natural bush. Cocus Palms, Murraya or Mock orange, and Brazilian Cherry to name a few, are spread by birds or bats throughout our natural areas. Many exotics are spread by wildlife who do not discriminate when sourcing food. Others with the ability to ‘take over’ the bush are spread by multiplication e.g. Sword fern, Bromeliads, or Crucifix orchids. These are attractive plants in their own right but should be confined to the home garden or a large tub or pot. With so much of our environment lost to development or farmland, even small areas are precious. Avoid the need to clean up or rake every leaf, leave some small patches for the lizards, frogs and other insects as well as the larger flora and fauna. Plant local natives in your garden where possible or seek advice on ‘environmental weeds’ from your local council.
Interchange threatens Endangered Frogs
Wallum Sedge Frog (Litoria olongburensis) – listed as Vulnerable Wallum Froglet (Crinia tinnula) – listed as Vulnerable Giant Barred Frog (Mixophyes literatus) – listed as Endangered These are some of the unique frogs that the Main Roads preferred design for the Caloundra Road / Steve Irwin Way interchange, will wipe out. Unless we (the people of the Sunshine Coast) stand up and fight for their patch of ground, these frogs will lose – our elected government will make sure of that! There is however an opportunity for the protection of these frogs. There are other designs for this interchange that will protect these frogs and their habitat and at a much reduced cost to the government. Why won’t they look at it? These frogs across the whole of south-east Queensland are rapidly losing their habitat due to land clearing, polluted waterways, disease, exotic fish, pesticides, weeds, changes in wetland hydrology, development and the disturbance of acid sulphate soils. This is just a brief summary of what our frogs are facing for the future. We have a responsibility to create environmentally sensitive designed roads and infrastructure that protects our wildlife. If you would like to know more, take a look at the Iconic Forest website http://iconicforest.wix.com/sunshinecoast and sign our petition online. If anyone is interested in helping to protect these frogs you can ring the Mooloolah Native Nursery on 5494 5074 or Jan Kesby on 0407 641 327. Want to learn more about frogs? Come along to our frog workshop on Sunday, November 17 starting at 2.00pm at Mooloolah Public Hall, Bray Road, Mooloolah and finishing at 8.30pm. Cost is $20.00 for nonmembers and $18.00 for members. Dinner is included. Please ring 5494 5074 Monday to Thursday for further information and to RSVP as numbers are limited.

The recently formed Beerburrum Innovation Group has cleverly developed the acronym BIG as an umbrella descriptor of their BIG aspirations when it comes to tackling some serious issues, while making Beerburrum an even better place to live. Now the BIG challenge is to get the ‘Magnificent Seven’ priority community projects underway and to support each of the working groups. Contact my office if you’re interested in being part of the BIG projects happening in the Beerburrum community.
Beerwah transformation Other big news is the demolition of the IGA precinct in Beerwah – it’s both visually shocking and a stark indicator that a major transformation of Beerwah is underway. Coinciding with Council’s infrastructure work along Simpson Street it means that we’re at a really tough time for existing business and it’s particularly important that locals continue to support local business by shopping locally first.

I mentioned in an earlier column that revised speed limit signs were close to being installed along Endeavour Road in Beerburrum. I can assure you that the signs are on the way and should be installed in the coming weeks and that the Sunshine Coast Road Policing Task Force has been informed and it’s expected that the Beerwah Police will be following up with patrols in the area.
Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information Centre A number of locals have understandably raised concerns to me regarding the future of the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information Centre and as a result I met with the CEO of Sunshine Coast Destinations Ltd, Simon Ambrose. At that meeting I outlined their concerns, (which I share) regarding potential over reliance on volunteers and the ongoing operation of the centre. I am satisfied that he understands we expect better in the future and have his assurance that SCDL is committed to maintaining the Glasshouse centre. To that end I understand that a volunteer recruitment and management program will be urgently developed and implemented.

NOVEMBER 13 2013
I’d like to thank the Council staff and local community members who worked exceptionally hard behind the scenes over the past year to ensure the Mooloolah Pool was kept open and operating for everyone to enjoy. Your Council has never wavered in our commitment to keep the pool open and I wish the new operators every success as they look after our community pool. At the Mooloolah community breakfast meeting this month we talked about RV’s and the potential for RV overnight parking in Mooloolah and in Eudlo. There are a number of issues to consider when it comes to having a formal RV park and it’s good to know that Council is researching the options and possibilities for our towns and that full community involvement and consultation regarding the installation of a park would be undertaken if plans for a park were to progress. The health of Mooloolah River has improved in 2013 with support from the ongoing efforts of Council and the community, so much so, that the health rating for the catchment went from a C in 2012 to a B+ this year. Congratulations must also go to the team and volunteers at Mooloolah River Waterwatch for their amazing efforts on helping to restore the ecological health of the Mooloolah catchment. The sculpture garden at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens has a new interactive capability that provides visitors with a unique guided tour of the sculptures. The 22 sculptures and three artisan crafted bench seats are now talking loud and clear to visitors via a mobile website about the history and detail of each artwork. You can access the entertaining tour via smartphone on council’s mobile website, m.scc.qld.gov.au or by scanning the QR codes that are at the entrance to the gardens – it’s well worth a visit. www.gcnews.com.au

Something’s eating my lawn
Sometimes common names for pests can cause more problems than the pest themselves. The pest commonly called ‘lawn grub’ is one of them. The actual lawn grub is the general name given to the caterpillar stage of such pests as sod webworm, army worm and cutworm. Not to be confused with the white curl grub. This is the larva of the African black beetle (also called lawn beetle, scarab beetle or cockchafer) – which is also mistakenly called ‘lawn grub’. From about now, lawns can be decimated by either of these pest species, and so it’s a good idea to keep an eye out and deal with them early. If you see your lawn losing condition in patches, take a close look. Can you see webs in the grass or caterpillars down near the soil. Green or brown ball-like droppings in the grass is another indicator of one of the lawn grub caterpillars. African black beetle larva are root feeders, and so weaken the grass, making it easy to pull out. In bad cases, the grass will roll back like a carpet. There are lots of different treatments to control the blighters. At this time of the year, take care with insecticide based ones if you have birds like magpies feeding at your place. As now they are feeding babies, and the treated grubs may upset the chicks, even causing death if they eat enough. One option in these cases is to use something like EcoGrub (produced by Multicrop). It has a eucalypt and tea tree oil based insecticide component, coupled with a fish and chicken waste fertiliser to feed the lawn, and has a wetting agent to help water penetrate into the soil. For white curl grub, you can douse the area with soapy water, which will bring them to the surface where the birds will feed upon them. If you’ve got more serious problems – then talk with one of our local rural supply or hardware stores and they should be able to suggest the best chemical option for your situation.
Go Green Rainforest Nursery Plant of the Week Noah’s Basswood If you are looking for a fast growing tropical small tree with stunning palm like foliage look no further than Noah’s Basswood. This beautiful small tree grows to around five metres in SE QLD and is often seen as a multi trunked tree. Its large palm like foliage complements a tropical rainforest garden and its fragrant cream flowers are followed by reddish black bird attracting fruit. It prefers a moist well-drained site and grows best in full sun to semi shade. In the wild, it is found in rainforest from Iron Range in Far North Queensland down to the Conway Range south of Proserpine. You only have to go as far as our nursery grounds though if you want to see some lovely four-year-old specimens that are currently in full flower. If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Driving in Glasshouse Country
I was recently driving out of Glass House Mountains when I was blasted by a car horn behind me. It seemed the driver who had blasted me was eager to join one of the informal dual lanes that begin as you near the intersection on Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way but they mustn’t have had any room to do so yet. I had no more room to move on my side and because I was in front of the other car I felt comfortable driving as I was. As she drove past I noticed a strategically placed finger gesture aimed at me. The whole thing was a bit unpleasant – especially at 8.30am but it got me thinking… I have always thought I was a pretty good driver and therefore justified that I hadn’t done anything wrong, but then it dawned on me that this is always the case in human conflict – both sides think they are right. History is full of examples of this. I started to think about the lady who had blasted me and gave me the unfriendly gesture. Whether she was driving appropriately or not, doesn’t change the fact that she is a person who I had obviously frustrated to the point that she wished to vent that anger with her horn and a hand gesture. The lady who I annoyed is a valuable member of our community of Glasshouse Country.

GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY ANGLICAN CHURCH WEDNESDAYS *Mooloolah (Paget Road) 9.00am SUNDAY *Mary MacKillop Centre 9.00am Rev. Ken Goodger - 5491 1866
That lady is a daughter of someone and maybe a sister or a mother. What I am trying to say is that this experience highlighted to me that we live in Glasshouse Country and not in some big city because we want to live in a community where people care about each other. My family and I have lived here for seven years and love being a part of the community. To the lady in the car... I am really sorry for annoying you. To all of us who drive... the next time we’re behind the wheel - let’s be mindful of those in cars around us. They are all loved ones to someone. The bible says in Luke 6 verse 31 ‘Do to others as you would have them do to you’. I think that is a good thing to think about when we are driving too. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

By Jenny Morris Just before the September school holidays the Junior Winter competition finished and I am pleased to report that four of our teams made the finals, with the Muppets winning the grand final. Congratulations to all of our junior players and we wish them well in the summer season which has just started. We were able to field six teams this time so we wish them well and hope our junior players have fun playing their matches. The Monday night, spring season is drawing to a close with only one team, the Mungrals able to make the finals. Good luck to Pete and his players. Our AGM is coming up on Sunday, November 24 at 3.00pm at the clubhouse. Besides the election of officers, there will be much discussion about applying for grants to upgrade our lights. This project is way overdue so we keep our fingers crossed with our grant applications. Following our AGM at 4.00pm will be the juniors Christmas party with a barbecue to follow. All members are invited to come along for an afternoon of fun. If you are coming to our break-up please bring along a plate to help with the catering. On behalf of the Committee I wish everyone a Merry Xmas and thank all members for their support during 2013. Please consider helping us in any way so the Club can grow and become more successful in 2014.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club
Contributed by Jenny Kelly The ladies held their last of their Men's Invitation Days for the year with 108 players coming out to play a Tiger Ball for trophies kindly donated by two of our lady members, Pam Marsden and Jan Corfield. What is a Tiger Ball I hear you ask? Well, it's one of those diabolical fun games where you play a Stableford with a partner, and multiply the number of points scored by each player. Sooo, if one gets a par for 3 points and your partner washes out then 3 x 0 = 0. Ouch! This didn't seem to trouble our winners, husband and wife team Geoff and Teresa Keast who scored a massive 93 points. No wash outs for them! Our runners up were Rona Elmer and her husband Peter on 81 points, with Helen and Wayne Lewis 2nd runners up on 77 points. NTP's went to Monica Dangerfield and Barb Whitfield on the 2nd, Chris Mellish and Andrea Campbell on 5, Dawn Webster and Margaret Goodger on 16 and Val and Wane Turner took out the 18th. The Ball rundown went to 63 points. Back to more serious matters next week with the girls holding their AGM on Thursday. See you all there, until then, stay safe and good golfing. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Be open to ideas coming to you now as Mercury goes direct. Positive thoughts can be self fulfilling prophecies if you have opened your mind to the new, rather than being stuck in the old grooves. Do your best to keep pace with shifting priorities. People are exciting but unpredictable now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 You are back to feeling inspired again, perhaps enough to do something artistic or understand what family members are saying. Stability on the home front is calming and a couple of good night’s conversations will overcome previous thoughts of depression as Mercury enters its direct momentum. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Communication with friends takes a big step forward thanks to Mercury, the planet of communication, in its go-ahead position. Anything you have been waiting for can finally arrive. Visiting and chatting with neighbours or relatives can brighten your day as well as providing inspiration. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Mercury having been retrograde in Scorpio releases stuck information, or stalled mailing communications, as it now progresses forward. By the end of the week details will become clearer. You are back in tune again with your sixth sense and thinking about your business world and best work ethic.

CANCER June 22 – July 22 You start the week with the compatible sign of the Moon in Pisces. So with Mercury going direct you get a better handle on children, lovers, creative pursuits and your own deepest needs. Give yourself permission to express yourself at the weekend. The Taurus Moon says ‘sing your heart out’! LEO July 23 – August 22 Maybe this week you might examine more repressed emotional issues in your family history. Mercury going direct will bring you changes and possibly some mysteries revealed. Early in the week and then again at the weekend you will want to have enjoyment, so choose breakfast chats. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Mercury is your ruling planet and turning direct eases blocked communication and frees up a backlog of contracts. Say what you feel and all those stalled projects should once again spring to life. With the Moon in Pisces, psychic sensitivity is on a high cycle now. The weekend sees cash benefits. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 As Mercury goes direct early in the week you should follow all the right paths with your instincts now. By Thursday and Friday as the Moon is in the positive sign of Aries, your desires express themselves explosively! One minute you are stuck and the next you are off on another exciting journey.

PISCES February 20 – March 20 Tuesday and Wednesday, with the Moon in your sign, brings you what you need in the way of peace and quiet. Then action will start again on Thursday and Friday with the Moon in Aries, especially concerning travel plans. The weekend meets your basic needs and higher mind quest for the distant future. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The Moon in your sign this week brings some impatience throughout the day but Neptune now moving direct should give you sweet dreams. Those professional associations forming with Mercury direct may bring you an unexpected good deal. This may include surprising career challenges. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Early in the week things should go smoothly, thanks in part to your ability for tuning into your friends and associates. Listening to conversations about financial matters may help you a lot. Don’t overlook the luck that can come your way as a result of you having many contacts with helpful people. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Early in the week the Pisces Moon bubbles up emotions and leaves your usual rational mind-set in a corner. Confidence and feelings of optimism come after Wednesday when the Aries Moon circulates a stream of surprises in your social circle. After that Mercury direct helps you to think clearly.

Then to finish off during the celebrations and (hic) during the evening me and my mate downed two bottles of Johnny Walker's black label.” Getting impatient the officer warns him; “do you understand I'm a policeman and have stopped you for an alcohol test?” The Brit, with a grin on his face, replies; “do you understand that I'm British, like my car, which is right-hand-drive and that my wife is actually sitting in the other seat, which is the one behind the steering wheel?” Hugh Jones, Beerwah

The British guy lives near Le Bugue in the Dordogne (France) and at the time he was stopped he was as extremely drunk. The officer signals to him to wind down the window then asks him if he has been drinking, and with a slurring speech the British guy replies; “yes, this morning I was at my (hic) daughter's wedding and as I don't like church much I went to the cafe opposite and had several beers. Then during the wedding banquet I seem to remember downing three great bottles of wine (hic) a corbieres, a Minervois and (hic) a Faugeres.
